The race begins in Denver, Colorado when teams quickly jet off to their first location, Sao Paulo, Brazil where, upon landing, they must venture deep into the heart of the city to find their next clue at the Hotel Unique. Almost immediately, teams make their way by foot to Viaduto Santa Ifigenia, a pedestrian footbridge overlooking the highway and the Vale do Anhangabuau. One team struggles to locate the clue box, while other teams seem to find it with ease.
By foot?? Something seems wrong. As the crow flies it's 3.33 miles through a dense urban area.

   Phil's Comments in TV Guide
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a one page "Phil Keoghan's Amazing Race Diary" spread in this week's TV Guide. Not too much exciting info...confirms that we have a start from Red Rocks Ampitheater (as spoiled here and shown in commercials) and the first leg travels to Brazil. He notes that the flight that is supposed to arrive first is delayed, and many of the racers don't realize that Spanish is not the official language of Brazil.

He mentions Lake and Michelle ("light packers"), BJ and Tyler (stating they are immediately nicknamed "The Hippies" by other teams), and Dani and Danielle (Tyler dubs them "Double Ds"), as well as praising Yolanda, who has "the most amazing legs" of the racers.

The detour is "Motorhead or Rotorhead" and involves a choice between building a motorcycle or navigating for marked roofs from a helicopter. There is a candle lighting ceremony that the teams must take place in to receive a clue at some point as well.

This may be the destination:

Brotas is São Paulo's capital of radical sports. With a good travel agency support it is possible to rent almost everything in the city, as rubber ring-cross, kayak, rafting, horses, rappel, special clothes, etc.... it is the kind of place that even with rain you will have fun, although you will be wet all the time.

Am I missing something from "Phil's Diary"?    :-\

Where are the buses seen in the commercials?  If the diary is correct, they finish the cultural ceremony by 4PM and reach the pitstop (Pacaembu Stadium) by 5PM.  Or is Phil describing only the first hour, and we get 2 complete episodes back to back with 2 eliminations? No, can't be, it's never happened before. Doesn't seem like enough to fill 2 hours.   :knock:

Phil Keoghan's Amazing Race Diary
The globe-trotting host takes us along on the exotic new season's first leg.

thanks to puddin's scan   :jam:

Day One 6:30 am: There's always this great feeling before the race begins, the calm before the storm. As the teams arrive at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver, you can't imagine that in an hour and a half this wild animal will be let out of its cage. I like to walk along the line of the teams' bags to see who has planned ahead and who is unrealistic about what they're going to haul around for the next month. While some teams have decided they're on a luxury trip, husband-and-wife team Lake and Michelle Garner have packed light.

11 am: Teams start arriving at Denver International Airport and have to get on one of three flights to Brazil. I put on a hat and sit in the corner to hear what the teams say, since it's the first time they're allowed to talk to each other. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly they give each other nicknames. Instantly, the teams decide best friends B.J. Averell and Tyler MacNiven are "The Hippies," since they are very hairy guys. Then B.J. and Tyler spot another team, Danielle Torchio and Danielle Turner. It's fair to say the two Danielles are shapely, and Tyler decides they're "The Double-Ds".

Day Two 9:30 am: We've made it to the Sao Paulo Airport in Brazil and things are already going wrong. The flight that was meant to land first is delayed. And some teams haven't realized the language in Brazil is Portuguese, not Spanish.

1 pm: There are 2 popular ways of getting around in Sao Paulo - motorbikes or helicopters - so the race's first detour is a choice we've decided to call "Motorhead vs. Rotorhead." They have to either assemble a motorcycle from scratch or take a helicopter over the city and look for a specific roof to land on to claim their clue. There's quite a scene at the shop where they're putting the bikes together. One team has decided to assemble theirs in the street, and the locals are excited about one female team member, Yolanda Brown Moore, who has the most amazing legs on the race.

4 pm: Many of the teams have finished the challenge and have arrived at a warehouse to watch an indigenous cultural ceremony. The teams are required to take part by lighting a candle and handing it to one of the locals to receive their next clue. Some become visibly affected.

5 pm: Finally, everyone starts showing up at the first pit stop. Something I often hear from teams at the first mat chat is that the Race is nothing like they expected. Everyone thinks it looks so easy on TV, but are shocked at how dificult it really is. And this is just the beginning. There's more than 50,000 miles to the finish line, and cameras will be rolling every step of the way.

I don't think those are words from Phil's mouth.  So "pit stop"?  No!

It seems to that we should be able to find this location:

One possible view is from roof of Unique Hotel (lower left), across green area to apartment buildings(upper right) in distance.  It's a long shot.

Most likely it's the Cassorova waterfall. There're at least 3 waterfalls in Brotas.

I am glad I could help with the Alaya thing.

We then know that the teams arrive in Sao Paulo, and pretty much what they do there.  My guess is that this place Brotas is the second destination in Brasil.

Boingo, I was looking at that view with GE and the buildings on the other side of the park don't look tall enough like the TV Guide photo.

But then GE does not reveal building height very well!   :umn:
