We begin with a preview of the race in the beginning. Angie & Danny get their first confessional with Kishori & Karishma. Rod & Chrissy Teigen/Leticia and Juan & Shane and Sunny & Bizzy also say something. Phil announces the premise of the race.

We get establishing shots of PUERTO VALLARTA! It's a highly regarded beach tourism town. All teams running onto Playa El Salado with someone nearly getting ran over. Michelle & Sean introduce themselves first as the Double Dutch masters. They would've killed the Detour in TAR27. Anthony & Bailey are self-proclaimed beach boys. Chris & Mary live in a 1-bedroom apartment. Amber & Vinny can put out their competition and wake up at the Finish Line.

Juan & Shane are best friends who live across the globe. Yvonne has a Mexican heritage and has an immediate advantage this leg. Rohan & Maya are aquatic instructors. Phil is excited for this cast. Just like last season, NO non-eliminations. Derek says they have to be on their A-game.

2 new countries later on. Teams have to pick up their clue on top of their cars. We got Chevys. Damn, they really don't want their Ford sponsorship back.

And the teams are off!!! Running through the plaza like bulls in a china shop! Chris already falls!

And we return to our regularly scheduled program of Angie & Danny trying to find the Voladores. Ooooh, TAR3 Fast Forward switchback!

Ricky & Cesar have been dating for 4 years and met in Mexico. A lot of connections to Mexico already. Anthony wishes he didn't fail Spanish twice. Kishori is half-Mexican. Karishma lived with Kishori and have become sisters. Karishma's father had Hodgkin's lymphoma and mother had cancer, unfortunately no longer with us. Amber & Vinny and Michelle & Sean chatter. Amber knows "Southern". Danny is honored and blessed while Angie wants to watch Danny live his dream.

Angie says the title quote while Danny reveals his asthma diagnosis. Maya & Rohan are unclear of what other teams are doing. They are superfans of the race and prepared by studying different languages in school. Rohan is Maya's ride or die. Maya hopes she can get her nerves out driving in a different country. Chris & Mary thrive under stress. Juan & Shane are honed in and reveal they met in pilot training.

2 new countries later on. Teams have to pick up their clue on top of their cars. We got Chevys. Damn, they really don't want their Ford sponsorship back.

Anyone else noticed how oddly edited this part was with the Phil V.O, I don't think the added ADR felt as natural as they hoped for.

Juan says Spanish is not very beneficial since it's very hectic driving. Derek & Shelisa have their first fight getting to Malecon.

We see the flying performers and Ricky & Cesar find the site first! They are hurrying while Rod & Leticia are behind.

DETOUR: Pick 'Em Up or Put 'Em Down
In Pick 'Em Up, teams must pick up 2 rocking horses and transport them down the cobblestone streets to the Malecon. In Put It Down, teams must watch a 40 second fight sequence and match luchador fights by their masks to receive the next clue.

Derek & Shelisa pick up the Detour clue. Shelisa spills her bag outfits. Fun fact: she's the first female lieutenant of her police department and have been married for a long time.

Rod is a former NFL wide receiver. Chrissy Teigen/Leticia is his ride-or-die. Rohan & Maya are driving in circles and don't know what to do. Well... they are not in the right area. Maya is distraught.

We come back to Rohan hoping there's another team lost because they don't have a map. They did not want to put effort into buying one. "Anything can still happen." - Maya. Anthony & Bailey catch Ricky & Cesar going to the luchadores. We start with a stampede of these fighters rushing the ring. It's pure chaos.

Ricky & Cesar start deducing by main colors. Rod & Leticia find the luchadores as well.

Yvonne & Melissa arrive at the Detour clue in 4th and do the rocking horses. Anthony & Bailey can't find the clue and run to the Voladores. They think they have to climb up. It's always a sibling rivalry between them, but now they gotta work together.

They finally get to the Detour clue and do the rocking horses. Chris & Mary and Amber & Vinny running to the clue box in 6th and 7th. Michelle & Sean and Angie & Danny vs. Kishori & Karishma (unable to lock their car). All do Pick 'Em Up except for the unlocked car girls.

Chris needs to walk and Mary encourages him to enjoy the scenery while they are in Puerto Vallarta. They reveal Chris is widowed and Mary is a source of happiness. Amber & Vinny dated for a little over 4 years and met in the cadaver lab.

Ricky & Cesar arrange their luchadores on the boards and calls for a check. Incorrect. "NO, NO, NO!" - el arbitro.

We get another round of the fighters with Rod & Leticia surprised by the amount of wrestlers. Rod was completely bamboozled. Some wrestlers are out of view before time runs out.

Ricky & Cesar will wait five more minutes while Leticia deduces the boards carefully. Derek & Shelisa start carrying the horses and the wheels spin out on the cobblestones. Think a broken shopping cart. Yvonne & Melissa follow behind them and reveal they met in an activity group.

Ricky & Cesar get another check, still wrong. "I don't want to do this again." - Cesar.
Rod & Leti are also disapproved while Kishori & Karishma arrive at the luchadores.

Sunny & Bizzy do to wooden horses in 11th place.

"How do we get up there bro." - Juan & Shane. Rohan decides to drive while Maya is planning on leading directions.

Chris & Mary find Calle Juarez but need to find Calle Corona. They are lost.

Derek & Shelisa muster their strength with the horses while Anthony & Bailey and Amber & Vinny get to the horse pickup station. They work together to go down the steep cobblestone hill. "Hills are not your friend." - Bailey. Amber smashes her finger and asks Vinny to give her a bit of space between them and the horses.

"Deadpool. Lightning." - Karishma.

"Blue butterfly motif."

Ricky & Cesar get a third check while Rod & Leticia also ask. The boyfriends get it right and are off in 1st! ROUTE INFO: Lienzo Charro Miguel “Prieto” Ibarría.

Rod & Leticia are off while Kishoir & Karishma still need to redo it.

Juan & Shane get to the clue box at the Voladores in 12th. They do the rocking horses.

Derek & Shelisa still making their way down into town. Chris & Mary pass by Amber & Vinny and Anthony & Bailey to the horses. They see Angie & Danny and Angie reveals there are two more left. Michelle & Sean and Sunny & Bizzy get the final two horses.

Kishori & Karishma get a check and are off in 3rd! Chris & Mary cannot see any horses and are in big trouble. Chris is winded.

Returning to Chris & Mary's cobblestone-rocky situation, they figure the only option is to head to the luchadores. Chris says they have a motto re-quoted from previous racers. Juan & Shane ask for a phone in Spanish while Mary asks for directions in Spanish. They go separate directions. "Not my problem." - Chris.

Michelle "I control you, horse, you don't control me!"

Sunny & Bizzy reveal they are firefighters and mothers! Derek & Shelisa FINALLY get down, but they still have to look for the delivery location. Maya & Rohan still driving and meet a blocked roadway. Already a collision. Oh no. They are absolutely caught up in a tight alleway and sideways on the road.

Chris & Mary find out they ran the wrong way while Juan & Shane arrive at the luchadores. They don't know what the heck they are looking at. "Blue Batman." They need to rewatch.

Derek & Shelisa arrive at the plaza and must take off the wheels to receive their next clue. That's A LOT of work compared to the wrestling Detour. Yvonne & Mel and the beach boys arrive at the kids. Amber & Vinny also get there and Vinny compliments her. Derek & Shelisa get their clue in 4th.

Amber & Vinny and Beach Boys leave in 5th and 6th. Yvonne & Mel leave in 7th while Michelle & Sean and Angie & Danny arrive.

Rod & Leticia and Ricky & Cesar still driving. Kishori & Karishma are thrilled to see they are on the right track.

We come back to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery as Rohan & Maya need to do the impossible and make a three-point turn. "That was the most stressful moment of my life, Rohan." - Maya. They reveal they are competitive athletes and finally get to the clue box in last. They choose the luchadores aptly. Juan & Shane get a check with a majority incorrect.

Chris & Mary arrive at the wrestling ring while Sunny & Bizzy leave the Detour in 8th.

Chris & Mary vs. Juan & Shane at the wrestling match. Juan & Shane are correct and leave in 9th now. Rohan & Maya and Juan & Shane pass each other. Rohan has a Bachelor's in Neuroscience and Maya is studying biology. Good luck with neurosurgeon memory here.

Michelle & Sean and Angie & Danny finish the rocking horse Detour in 10th and 11th.

Rod & Leticia find the ROADBLOCK! "Who is feeling loopy?"
One team member must jump through a series of 7 spinning lassos without knocking off their wide-brimmed hat to receive their next clue.

Ricky & Cesar arrive at the RB in 2nd. Cesar does it.

Rod is the first sacrifice on the arena. They must time their jumps at the precise moment. Oh, Michelle & Sean... you better show your skills here. Rod is struggling hard. Cesar gets through a couple, but misses in the middle.

Chris & Mary and Rohan & Maya ask for checks. Father and daughter leave the Detour in 12th while Maya & Rohan also leave right behind in last. "We are still in it!" - Rohan.

Was expecting a choreography task, but this RB is pretty unique and requires nimbleness and timing, which isn't often tested. Still, seems like a quick task and I'm not sure how teams could jump placements easily.

Derek finishes extremely quick and are off! Kishori & Karishma arrive. Karishma thinks it's lasso throwing like the Chilean huasos in TAR16.  Karishma is discouraged after 17+ tries at the first cowboy. Angie & Danny arrive at the RB in 5th. Danny is scarred for life of horses. Yvonne & Melissa arrive in 6th.

Beach Boys run over a huge bump in the road while Amber & Vinny are continuing to drive themselves worried. Karishma finishes the jumps by a miracle, but forgets her handkerchief. She asks Kishori to throw her the RB clue. She realizes. "I knew this was gonna be an issue. She doesn't read directions carefully." - Kishori.

We come back to Karishma not counting without her handkerchief. We get a misplaced title card of "Kishori" on her 19th attempt. iAyiyi!

Ricky & Cesar are stuck in traffic while Rod & Leticia are going for a 1st. "I don't know what place we're in. But I know we're here!". Pit Stop nearby!

And... ROD & LETICIA are TEAM NUMBER ONE! They win absolutely nothing. They are still racing. It's TAR18 all over again. ROUTE INFO: find the next clue at the center of the Lacuna? Bridge. Ricky & Cesar arrive in SECOND, but receive the KOR clue.

Juan & Shane starts jumping through in lightning speed to avoid the Double Dutchers. "We lapped all those teams!" They are off to the Pit Stop. Kishori is worried now.

Derek & Shelisa are TEAM NUMBER THREE. Keep on racing.

Karishma wants to make her dad proud in spirit. Success! They leave in 5th.

Sean is hitting a slump. Danny hits a snag. Yvonne & Melissa leave the RB in 6th.

Rohan & Maya and Amber & Vinny are completely by themselves here.

We're back to Amber & Vinny asking where the rodeo is. They need to make a u-turn around the construction.

Juan & Shane are TEAM NUMBER FOUR, holy cow.

Amber & Vinny arrive at the RB. Amber gave him the stink eye and inferred to Vinny he was gonna do it.

Vinny finishes so quick and Mary is pumped to get through it.

Michelle & Sean, Yvonne & Melissa, Angie & Danny, Anthony & Bailey, and Sunny & Bizzy all check in without much airtime....

Meanwhile, Chris & Mary leave the RB while Rohan & Maya need to speed through the rodeo.

Amber & Vinny vs. Chris & Mary vs. Rohan & Maya!!! It's about to be a foot race I think. Chris & Mary ask for directions at a hotel. Amber & Vinny are driving in the opposite direction and need to hitch a u-turn. Rohan & Maya know exactly where they are going.

Rohan & Maya are the last team to arrive, and IT'S A KOR ELIMINATION LEG!

They've been watching the show forever and even getting to run one leg was a dream come true to them. Rohan is proud they never had heated exchanges with each other. Maya cannot imagine life without Rohan's sibling bond.

A fun start that helped us learn about the teams. It's apparent that this is a COVID season with the emphasis on driving and how it took out a team. Love rooting for superfans, but Maya & Rohan's age sadly showed with their navigation and Austin Powers moment.

Okay, I’m gonna say it. Most of these teams are…weird??

I have a feeling that *real* 36 was aired before this one as they needed a really strong season to bounce back after the COVID season to keep the show going. Last season felt like such a breath of fresh air with an incredible cast that I fell in love with immediately and interesting tasks and this already just feels like a major step down from that. Wrestling task was kind of cool but other than that, I think even the leg build was a letdown. I know it is just the start so still holding hope, let’s see how it is next week!

Okay, I’m gonna say it. Most of these teams are…weird??

Yeah, but it's often hard to judge after one episode.

Last season's cast was boring for the first 3 weeks. The claws came out once they got to India.

Only the second Race visit to Jalisco by any franchise, TARLA 5 being the first.

We've seen teams overpack unnecessary items (and have to jettison them mid-race) but I believe Shelisa's crossword/sudoku books are a first. 

Gotta love the wrestling refs being total hams while doing the challenge checks.

Pro tip for helping someone back up a car: Instead of just telling them to keep going or to stop, describe to them how much space they have to move ("You've still got 2 feet", etc.) or show them the distance using your hands.

I noticed Phil still had a clue envelope in his pocket when Maya & Rohan arrived to the mat. An extra just in case or did the decision to make Leg 1 an elimination leg come after clue prep was finished for Leg 2?
