Previously on TAR, 5 teams raced through beautiful Naples, Italy! Han & Holden got off to a shaky start and a series of mistakes kept Carson & Jack from climbing the ranks. Ana's pizza prowess helped her and Jon secure 1st. Meanwhile, Han & Holden were revealed a non-elimination. Coming up tonight, with elimination certain, the 5 teams now face off head to head.

Jon & Ana depart 1st at 11:51 A.M. Fly to Frankfurt, then take a train to Strasbourg, France!

Teams must travel to the Council of Europe to pick up the next clue, it will also reveal a Head-to-Head upcoming. Jon is taking it day by day. Ana is hoping to double-dip by buying plane tickets and train billets at the same time at the agency.

Brett & Mark and Alyssa & Josiah depart 2nd and 3rd. Alyssa wants to use the Express Pass as the last leg possible. Carson & Jack depart 4th excitedly. Han & Holden depart in last and are blessed. They call themselves "la cucarachas" and are fighting. Everyone is on the same accommodations. Mark and Han are each feeling hopeful.

We come back to teams squaring off at the infamous Frankfurt Airport to get onto the trains at the Hauptbahnhof. Everyone makes it on. Jack says the million dollars would change his life as he was recently laid off. Han's motto is imperfection and "good enough is good enough". Brett & Mark celebrate crossing to the French border. Josiah can smell the baguettes.

EVERYONE IS OFF RUNNING! They must find a marked car in the garage to drive to the Council.

Han & Holden and Brett & Mark navigate out into the city in the lead. Carson & Jack think it's a debate task. Jon & Ana want to not make any mistakes.

Han & Holden arrive at the Council and run to the other side only to find no markers at the box office/security. Jon & Ana see Han & Holden running away with Ana being confused. They find the hours of operation and find H&H back up the stairs at the HoH. Carson & Jack and Alyssa & Josiah reach the Council. Meanwhile, Vegas is completely lost...

Scramble for the clue between the first four teams! Domino effect of teams leading to Carson & Jack nudging into the lead. "Name the 4 countries you have raced in that are members of the Council of Europe". Jack answers correctly. Drive to Pont Couverts! Head-to-Head is next!

It's a boat jousting task! Head-to-head early in the leg and not at the end! Thank you! Han & Holden, Jon & Ana, and Alyssa & Josiah are now answering the question with Josiah completely stumped. He guesses Indonesia and UAE. Oh no.

Josiah finally answers Germany and Alyssa mentions not seeing Brett & Mark. Meanwhile, Brett thinks they can catch up from behind as they are actively misdirecting themselves.

Han & Holden ask a cafe patron where the bridge is. They are the first to arrive! ROADBLOCK: Who's ready to go head to head?
One team member must compete in water jousting. Knock your opponent into the canal to receive your next clue. Last team will have a 10-minute penalty before trying to catch up to the other teams.

Carson & Jack arrive with Carson doing the task. The DnD nerds are fanboying over jousting. They go on a tangent and then realize Han is a surfer girl. It's Han vs. Carson. "What do you like? Winning!" - Han.

Awesome, they didn't put it at the Pit Stop this time. Out of the several versions to do Head to Heads, US was the only one to do that.

It's more fun when there's another task after, to give the losing team a chance to survive.

We come back to our first Head-to-Head of the season! Jon & Ana arrive as 3rd place with Jon volunteering. Alyssa & Josiah follow in. "Express Pass cannot be used for this event." Then what's the point of the pass?

Brett & Mark ask a shopkeeper for directions to the Council.

The jousting demonstration commences with Han and Carson. We get a quick montage edit of their warrior poses from pre-casting. Jack knows Carson is strong so he hopes he can knock Han right off. Han understands the importance of stance.

Carson makes a giant splash! Han & Holden leave in 1st. "Merci beaucoup!" ROUTE INFO: La Cloche A Fromage Cheese Shop!

It's now Jon vs. Carson. Jon is having a hard time balancing and explains the waves in the water are making it difficult.

Battle 2 and Carson managed to knock Jon into the water! "I was very disappointed. I wanted to knock him into the water so bad." - Jon. Carson & Jack leave in 2nd.

Brett & Mark arrive at the Council finally and Mark is listing the countries. They get their clue in last in time for the head-to-head as good news for them.

ROUTE INFO: Identify 9 cheeses and recite them to a fromagier at a nearby restaurant... didn't we do this task a couple seasons ago? Accidental Switchback.

Holden is over-pronouncing the words. "That could kill a horse, man."- Holden over the strong cheese flavor. Han and Holden are finished and go for the attempt at utter confusion on first glance.

Brett & Mark arrive at the RB with Mark going for it. Meanwhile, Jon vs. Josiah! And... Jon knocks Josiah into the canal! Jon & Ana leave in 3rd. Josiah's loss is getting into his head.

Mark reaches the canal and Alyssa is worried sick with Brett right beside her. Brett is "up the river without a joust" since Vegas doesn't have an Express Pass to afford losing this.

We return from commercials to... Mark being defeated. Brett is in complete last now with Alyssa & Josiah heading out in 4th. Their 10 minute starts.

Carson & Jack arrive at the cheese shop. Jack's dream comes true with him "never meeting a cheese I didn't like". DnD is sampling as happy as can be while Han & Holden get the first two cheeses correctly, but fail the Brillant-Savarin. DnD answer incorrectly early as well.

Jon & Ana arrive at the cheese shop. Brett & Mark finish their 10 minutes are leave in last. Not exactly a detrimental in-task penalty.

Alyssa & Josiah arrive right behind with Carson & Jack narrating the situation. Alyssa is panicking and wants to use the Express Pass as they realize it is taking a long time.

Josiah is quickly misproving Alyssa's point with Holden arguing with Han about not being able to taste the cheeses differently anymore. Alyssa is not entertaining this while Brett & Mark arrive. Brett is thrilled to have caught up thanks to the nature of the cheese task itself.

Alyssa & Josiah try the cheeses and are not getting it right. Josiah wants another go before using the Express Pass. Han & Holden are going for their attempt and only answered up to the middle before getting it wrong. Everyone is struggling. Meanwhile, H&H eventually get it right!

ROUTE INFO: Strasbourg Cathedral! Teams must climb to the top of the cathedral to the panoramic outlook to pick up the next clue.

Everyone else is cheesing for the task while Alyssa & Josiah are now nervous. Carson & Jack and Jon & Ana eventually get it right and leave the cheese task in 2nd and 3rd. "I'm calm, this is just illogical." - Alyssa.

Brett & Mark say they have the cheeses right while Josiah is claiming they can get the cheeses right on the next try.

Han & Holden are running into the cathedral and now must climb 330 steps up a spiral staircase. Carson & Jack following right behind them.

DETOUR: Out to Dry or For the Birds
In Out to Dry, teams must clean a tub full of dirty garments in the canal. In For the Birds, teams must create a structure of a nest for storks.

H&H and DnD choose the laundry task.

Jon & Ana are climbing with Jon complaining that Ana is annoying and is going to get them eliminated. He is spent and Ana is now in charge of picking the Detour. She chooses the laundry.

Han stops someone on the street to ask for directions to the laundry with Carson & Jack realizing how far the task is from their current location. Holden is arguing with Han now and Jon & Ana get away from them with their own tension.

We return to the ghosts of John & Jessica's past as Alyssa is relinquishing the Express Pass right before Brett & Mark finishes the cheese identification.

Carson & Jack are driving into the countryside with Carson feeling he has control issues. Alyssa & Josiah are climbing the spiral while Brett & Mark arrive at its doorsteps.

Alyssa & Josiah are doing the stork nest while Vegas is exhausted. They are doing the nest as well.

Han & Holden are driving toward Paris and find out they need to drive south. They pull over and ask someone in a Fiat. They are even more confused. Meanwhile, DnD arrive at the laundry!

Carson & Jack pays attention to the method the grannies are doing. They are relatively enjoying this task. Brett & Mark are navigating and trying to play their comeback card with correct directions. Jon & Ana, in the meantime, are lost. Ana just saw a sign and is missing crucial entrances. She asks for Jon to help direct as she can't do both. Alyssa & Josiah are battling their internal struggles and are also lost as they miss an exit.

Brett & Mark arrive out of nowhere at the stork nest assembly! Mark has cheese in his pocket.

The setup is relatively not complicated and Vegas gets started with the branches. Their strategy is to make it pretty. They still can't believe no one else is at the task. "We're not going to count our chickens before they hatch, but we're going to let them hatch in this nest." - Mark.

Carson & Jack are scrubbing to their delight with the gossip surrounding them. Carson has the silly energy to get the stains off from this source of motivation. Alyssa & Josiah arrive at the stork nest with Brett & Mark in the background.

"We have to go faster. I know, I know." - Brett & Mark. Josiah reveals he used to work in landscaping with his grandfather. The nurses are taking this as a sign they are ready for a stork in their life. Brett & Mark are making art while Alyssa & Josiah are wrapping like they are in the ER. Courtney & Jasmin would be proud.

Carson & Jack call for a check as Han & Holden pull up to the laundry. Jon wants to take over as Ana is wondering for directions. They are having a shutdown with their dynamics.

We come back to Jon & Ana having a bit of stress and frustration culminating into a standoff. Carson & Jack end up passing the laundry with their next clue!

ROUTE INFO: Drive to Vineyard Table D'Orientation and climb to the peak of the hill to the Pit Stop. Last team to check in WILL be eliminated.

Brett & Mark call for a check of their nest and it's unapproved.

Alyssa & Josiah also go for their check. "Hoping for a one-check wonder."- Josiah. It's immediately rejected without much of a glance from the demonstrator. Brett & Mark are declined again. Both are studying the guy wondering what they were doing wrong. Brett finds the wood board underneath and Alyssa & Josiah do too. Unfortunately, Aly & Josiah have something else wrong.

Vegas and the nurses are making quick work of their nests with Brett & Mark also getting closer, but still not approved.

Jon & Ana arrive at the laundry with Jon nagging in the background. Ana reveals she moved to Mexico when she was little and has a similar method growing up with this scrubbing exercise. Han & Holden making progress steadily.

Carson & Jack park their car and run up to Phil at the vineyard. They are TEAM NUMBER ONE and win OneKey Cash from Expedia to Helsinki, Finland.

Jack feels confident now and Carson says this was the fire they needed to continue. They bag on Alyssa & Josiah's Express Pass for no reason.

Brett & Mark and Alyssa & Josiah are getting checks again with the nurses finally getting it right. They quickly read their clue and set off in 2nd. Brett & Mark are still confused while Alyssa is asking a local gardener for directions. Mark is realizing the knots are pulled to the bottom of the nest.

Josiah thanks the man in the garden with his kid for the directions Alyssa is scribbling down. Brett & Mark finally get the clue and quickly run out of there. "We're racing them." - Mark.  (If you don't just follow them...)

Okay, they have the though to just follow them now. Phew. Alyssa & Josiah race off with Brett & Mark just behind.

Han & Holden scrubbed to the dissatisfaction of the granny and needs to redo some articles of clothing. Jon & Ana call for a check and Ana comments on the thorough check. They are approved and leave in 4th.

Han & Holden call for a second check and even with that, it's not approved. "That's on me." - Holden.

We return to Han scrubbing like her life depends on it. They call for a check and are finally approved! They leave in last.

Holden is asking for directions from two bicyclists right next to Jon with one cyclist. "The margin of error is really small right now." - Holden.

Brett & Mark can't catch up to Alyssa & Josiah's car while Holden and Han meet Vegas passing them in the opposite direction. "You're not going up the river. You're going adjacent." - Holden. Han wants Holden to breathe. Catfight!

Jon is directing Ana in a downtrodden manner while Josiah sees someone sitting on a motorcycle in the middle of a field... what?

Josiah & Alyssa see the vineyard's main hill and starts climbing. They meet Phil with Alyssa crying that they couldn't get ahead. Phil reveals they are TEAM NUMBER TWO to absolute disbelief and joy.

"We used the Express Pass right today." - Josiah. Alyssa is the TAR champ to Josiah. "I thought we were out." This is probably the best last place reaction to a very safe position I've seen in so long.

Brett & Mark navigating onto a field while Han & Holden think they were going the right way. "Holden, we've been in this situation before." Brett & Mark miss a turning point. Jon & Ana are now also driving the wrong way with Jon's disapproval very apparent. Oh, this is exciting.

"Lord, help me with this woman. Lord, help me with patience." - Jon. Han & Holden are now in a foot race up the hill with Jon & Ana. Brett & Mark are driving in high hopes.

Jon & Ana arrive to Phil as TEAM NUMBER THREE. They also though they were last. Jon is ashamed he got knocked down by Carson.

Han & Holden arrive at the Pit Stop right behind as Jon reveals they are TEAM NUBER FOUR.

Brett & Mark show up at the Pit Stop and are the last team to arrive and have been eliminated from the race.

Mark says they had a hard day while Brett breaks down. They are very grateful for this chance to cherish their relationship. "We ran 10 legs, we put a lot of pressure on many teams." They know many teams will be sleeping well tonight.

And that was the end of our Strasbourg leg with an insanely close race till the end. A lot of true colors coming out and much to talk about between the Head-to-Head (and lack thereof of Express Pass usage here) and the tension and high emotions among most teams. For quite some time after TAR 30, people debated whether TAR US or TAR Canada did the Face Off/H2H better. The correct answer was neither. This episode has the correct placement, in the middle of the leg. Not as the last task, and not the second to last task. There was so much time for the team that lost to make up time that it is almost crazy that they were eliminated (I know Justin will go on a huge tangent about following other teams). On top of the H2H, there was a lot to enjoy like the city of Strasbourg, the cheese task, and the mad scramble after the Detour to the Pit Stop. Only one more week left of what I am considering a top tier season.

I have to agree. It's even better as the first task than second-to-last.

An episode with this many placement shifts is bound to be exciting! It was nice to see a race to the Pit Stop with more than just two teams.

I feel the Council of Europe task may have tripped up more teams if they had not told the teams the number of correct answers (4), though who knows if we would have got the hilarious guesses of UAE or Indonesia in that case.

It was interesting to see how Alyssa was the one trying to convince Josiah to use the EP, then after their first few attempts, it was vice versa! I thought it may have been a bad usage of the pass- these types of matching tasks should get easier as they go on; if you can remember the ones you got correct, the number of possible combinations of the remaining cheeses goes down. Their strong Detour performance saved them.

An Express Pass hadn't been used on an Active Route Info in TARUS until season 35, but now 2 of the last 4 uses have been on an ARI.

Mark & Brett were right that they at least gave other teams a lot of trouble. In fact, they hadn't finished as low as fifth since leg 4. They ran a strong race, and if you're going to get eliminated, at least it's in a location as pretty as a French vineyard.
