"The Amazing Race" quickened its pace for last night's season finale, drawing stronger numbers than its past two finales to finish second behind football in its 8 p.m. timeslot.
"Race" averaged a 3.7 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights, up 19 percent over last fall's 3.1, and that despite the absence of football overrun, which often gives "Race" a ratings jolt.
The show was second in the slot behind NBC's "Sunday Night Football," which averaged a 5.8 rating.
"Race" has performed well all season, and in fact the show was up over last spring's finale as well, which also averaged a 3.1.
Also last night, ABC's scripted shows had their best performances in months. "Desperate Housewives" averaged a 4.8, up 10 percent over last week and matching a season high.
Lead-out "Brothers & Sisters" at 10 p.m. had its best rating in nine months, a 3.7, up 28 percent over the previous week.
As usual, NBC bulldozed the competition, finishing first for the night among 18-49s with a 5.6 average overnight rating and a 14 share. Fox was second at 3.9/10, ABC third at 3.4/8, CBS fourth at 2.4/6 and Univision fifth at 0.9/2.
As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-three percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.
Also, ratings for Fox’s football overrun and NBC’s “SNF” are approximate as fast nationals measure timeslot and not actual program data.
At 7 p.m. Fox led with a 6.1 for football overrun and “The OT” postgame show, with NBC second with a 2.8 for “Football Night in America.” CBS was third with a 2.1 for “60 Minutes,” ABC fourth with a 2.0 for a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and Univision fifth with a 0.7 for “Maria de Todos los Angeles.”
NBC took the lead at 8 p.m. with a 5.8 for NFL pregame and the start of “Sunday Night Football,” followed by CBS with a 3.7 for “Race.” ABC and Fox tied for third at 3.0, ABC for “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and Fox for “BCS Selection Show” (3.4) and a repeat of “The Simpsons,” with Univision fifth with a 0.9 for the first hour of the movie “Las Delicias del Poder.”
At 9 p.m. NBC was first again with a 7.3 for football, with ABC second with a 4.8 for “Housewives.” Fox was third with a 2.5 for repeats of “Family Guy” and “American Dad,” CBS fourth with a 2.2 for “Three Rivers” and Univision fifth with a 1.0 for more “Poder.”
At 10 p.m. NBC was first with a 6.4 for football, while ABC remained second with a 3.7 for “Sisters.” CBS was third with a 1.6 for “Cold Case” and Univision fourth with a 0.9 for the end of its movie and “Quien Tiene la Razon.”
NBC also led the night among households with a 9.1 average overnight rating and a 14 share. ABC was second at 6.7/10, CBS third at 6.4/10, Fox fourth at 5.7/9 and Univision fifth at 1.2/2.
