Ty Murray Blogs:

‘I think the Pasodobles is one of the cooler dances’

All week we've been in a little studio. It's really small, but we'll be in a bigger place tomorrow. Today we got to go run our routine on the CBS stage and it showed us a lot of what we need to prepare for.

Tomorrow we'll have a studio with a floor that's more the size of the television stage. It's pretty important where you start your routine and where big things happen and where you are when you end the dance.

On that little floor, especially with a dance that goes around the room, it's hard to get a feel for exactly where things are going to take place and where it's going to end.

We started running it over and over with music. Chelsie and I would run it and she would critique it and then we'd do it again and again. That's when I'm able to put things together. We practice all the different elements, but it's not until I start stringing it all together that it really starts working for me.

I think the Pasodobles is one of the cooler dances. It's a traditional dance and when you see two pros do it, it's a pretty cool looking dance. Chelsie and I have a straight up traditional routine and now it's just a matter of pulling it off, which I'm feeling a lot better about today.

Every Wednesday and Thursday you feel like you're not going to get there and then usually by the end of Saturday you're feeling pretty good. Hopefully by the end of tomorrow I'll be feeling even better.

I'm looking forward to having that bigger floor tomorrow so we can go all the way through the whole routine without getting bottlenecked into the corner.

DWTS Backstage: Gilles Marini Sounds Off on "Stick-Skinny Girls"

As if his dashing good looks and smooth dance moves weren't enough, Dancing With the Stars' hunky frontrunner Gilles Marini just gave us one more reason to adore him.

E! News caught up with the star backstage after tonight's elimination show and asked for his two cents on how Cheryl Burke's weight had been a topic of discussion in the press and on the fan boards.

Read on to find out what Gilles' fantastic response is...

"If women look like her," Gilles tells us, "that would be the perfect world. She doesn't need to change anything. Who likes stick-skinny girls? Where's the flavor? Whoever likes those stick-skinny girls never had sex before in their life."

Bravo, Gilles. Bravo.

Here's more backstage scoop from tonight's show, which saw Holly Madison and Steve Wozniak go home.

Derek Hough on Steve Wozniak's Goodbye Goodies: "For a guy who pretty much invented the computer, he handwrote us all letters, which is amazing. A little over two pages for each person," Derek says. Lil' Kim adds, "He gave us all gifts."

Holly Madison on the Upside: "I think I've learned a lot about dancing, and I'm going to keep working out definitely. We would rehearse like six hours every day, so I definitely toned up. I was able to eat whatever I wanted."

Steve Wozniak on His Dancing Future: "I will dance wherever I am. I will take ballroom lessons. I'll make it a part of my life. I hope there are a lot of other people like me that never danced their entire lives. [People] sitting at a computer terminal all day long, who are afraid to [dance]. You can actually go out there and dance and have fun."

Ty Murray on Rigging Votes: "[Steve Wozniak] is such a nice gentleman with such a great spirit. I think if he knew how to rig the vote, I don't think he'd do it."

Derek Hough on Lil' Kim: "I call her 'Gigantic Kim' sometimes."

Carrie Ann Inaba on the Frontrunners: "There are definitely frontrunners. Right now I would say Gilles, Melissa Rycroft and Lil' Kim. Lil' Kim's a little wild horse. She's not afraid to push the boundaries and I think that's going to be her power."

Melissa Rycroft on Elimination Night: "I don't think you can ever feel safe on this show because as you remember, [season 5 contender] Sabrina Bryan ended up going home early, even though she didn't deserve to go."

Woz on Marriage: "When you get married and have children, those are good experiences, too, but this is definitely the most fun."

Julianne Hough Wins ACM Award, Rips Dress

Country music star and "Dancing with the Stars" performer Julianne Hough ripped her Zuhair Murad dress as she took the stage of the 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards -- but the excitement didn't stop there with Carrie Underwood taking home two awards!

"It's a good thing I ripped my dress because now I have something else to think about," an overwhelmed and tearful Julianne told the audience as she accepted her award for Top New Artist.

Ty Murray Blogs:

This dance is about power’

We just got done with practice where we polished a few things up this afternoon. I feel like it's going pretty well and tomorrow we'll get to do it one more time during dress rehearsal before we have to do it on live TV.

That last dress rehearsal is always a good time for Chelsie and me to treat our routine as if it were the performance, because they run through the whole show as if it was live. But we're at a point now where it's one thing to be able to pull it off in practice, and it's another thing to be able to do that on the stage during the show.

Today Chelsie had me work on a few little things that have been bugging her, and I feel like we got those better. We videotaped the routine with my little flip camera, so tonight I'll watch it a bunch of times and just get all my different little cues tattooed into my mind.

When you get nervous, that's when you start filling your brain with other thoughts, or you can get off-balance, so the more sure you are thinking about your steps, and the movements you're going to make in your steps, the easier it is.

It's funny, because this dance is about power, and watching Chelsie she almost explodes she gets so intense with it. She wants me to feed off of that, but that's what makes for a standout dance, because when she brings it, she really brings it.

She always explains to me that no one knows your exact steps. They just know how good your performance is, so you can even miss a step as long as you can get right back on and never let it show in your performance, your expression or your posture.

That's what this dance is about, and that's what the judges are looking for: the drama, so I need to be focused. That way I can come out and not have it look mechanical. I feel pretty decent about it and so does Chelsie.

A Blog From Cheryl Burke:

To my dear family, fans and friends,

Last Monday evening was one of the most powerful moments for me as I watched Gilles acknowledge the extended standing ovation of the audience, basking in the glory of a perfect performance, with deep emotions in his eyes. It was a snapshot to remember.

Our Argentine Tango story was of a passionate couple, who quarrels, parts and makes up, creating a romantic, trance-like movement of two bodies in love becoming one heart, one mind, one soul. Gilles went into character and executed the drama in the dance floor flawlessly. He is such a talented and committed actor.

On Monday, April 6th, Gilles and I will dance the Paso Doble. The movements of the Paso Doble are designed around those made by the matador as he gracefully works his way around the bull and eventually slays it. The emotion of the dance is powerful, intoxicating and intense. It requires fierce drama and captive energy, as well as composure and stealth. Get ready to tune in and vote because the first few seconds of the dance is really something worth watching for.

Your show of love and affection is overwhelming. Gilles joins me in thanking you from the bottom of our hearts.

With love always,

Cheryl

P.S.

To vote for Gilles and me, call 800-868-3405 or log on to www.abc.com. Phone lines, text votes (AT&T customers only) and online polls will open at the top of each performance show. Phone and text lines will stay open for 30 minutes after the end of the show. Online voting will remain open until noon (Eastern Time)/9:00am (Pacific Time) on the day of the results show.

more on Carmen Electra:

Carmen Electra to appear on April 14 Dancing With the Stars

She already proved her dance floor daring as a guest star in the Pussycat Dolls burlesque troupe, and now Carmen Electra will strut her stuff on Dancing With the Stars. The brunette beauty is scheduled to perform with her group, Cherry Boom Boom, live on the April 14 episode of the hit ABC dance competition. “I’m very excited! I love to dance, and it’s so much fun,” Carmen told In Touch at the Vitaminwater10 launch in New York on April 2. Carmen has been slower to set another date — for her wedding to her fiancé, guitarist Rob Patterson. “It takes so much of your time," Carmen confided. "But we’re in a good place right now!”

Gilles Marini Says Wife Loves His Sexy Dancing

Dancing with the Stars heartthrob and front-runner Gilles Marini says his steamy moves on the show aren’t a problem for his wife, Carole—in fact, “she loves to see that sexiness.”

The French actor/model, who made a splash last year as Samantha’s outdoor-showering neighbor in the Sex and the City movie, says he wouldn’t be able to perform his high-energy dance routines without his wife’s support.

“Imagine if you do that job and you have a wife in the house or a husband in the house who is very kind of jealous and possessive, things would collapse,” he said in an interview with the website jenandbarbmomlife.com. “If I don’t have my wife at my side I have nothing. And so she is there pushing me and always kissing me and saying, ‘I am so proud of you.’”

Marini, 33, has been married to Carole for 11 years—they have a son, George, 10, and a daughter, Julianna, almost three. When Marini got the call to do DWTS early one morning, he was in bed watching Julianna bounce around in a pink tutu. “I’m on the phone with my manager, who’s asking, ‘Do you want to do this?’” he recalls. “And [Julianna] was dancing around, twirling around, and I said, ‘This is a sign, I have to do this.’”

But week in and week out, how is it that his wife can be so accepting of his smoldering routines with partner Cheryl Burke? “She’s French,” explains Marini. “The more sexy it is [on the show] the better it is for her. Tonight she told me, ‘I saw that shaking booty stuff, you’re going to have to show it to me [at home].”

"Episode 805A" - After a night of Viennese Waltz and Paso Doble, the fifth couple to be eliminated from the competition is revealed on "Dancing with the Stars the Results Show," TUESDAY, APRIL 7 (9:00-10:02 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Grammy Award winner Etta James performs her Grammy Hall of Fame rendition of the popular song, "At Last," accompanied by professional dancers Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff.  James is the winner of four Grammy® Awards and seventeen Blues Music Awards.  She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy® Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008.

Hollywood Records artist and Disney Channel star Demi Lovato takes to the "Dancing with the Stars" stage with her hit, "La La Land," from her first studio album, "Don't Forget," recently released on Hollywood Records (a deluxe version was re-released on March 31, 2009 with bonus features).  Joining Lovato on the "Dancing" stage will be professional dancers Benji Schwimmer and Torri Smith.  Currently starring in the Disney Channel hit, "Sonny With a Chance," Lovato shot to stardom when she appeared alongside the Jonas Brothers in the Disney Channel Original Movie, "Camp Rock." This week the bottom two couples facing elimination, determined by the lowest combined viewer votes and judges' scores from Monday's performance, will "Dance Off" to determine who is dismissed. The couples will have a chance to perform Monday's dance for new scores from the judges. The judges' scores from the "Dance Off" performance will replace their Monday night scores. A combination of the new judges' scores from the "Dance Off" dance, along with viewers votes from Monday's show, will be calculated following the "Dance Off" to determine the eliminated couple.

TONIGHT'S DANCE

Tonight, Kym and I are performing what I think is our most complete dance so far. By that I mean, we tried to create a dark, moody, and sexy, story told all within the confines of the Viennese Waltz. I love the song we are dancing to "I Put A Spell On You" arranged by Nina Simone !!! Kym's choreography is BANGIN as always !!! We want to take you places! Can't wait...

Next week is the Rhumba, but we have to get there first.VOTE-VOTE-VOTE !!!!

Dancing with the Stars Episode Recap: Monday, April 6, 2009

After last week's double elimination, the Top 9 get down to business with the Viennese Waltz and paso doble. Did anyone put up a good fight? Find out below.

Granted, my exposure to ballroom dancing is limited to this show, but I think my favorite dance is the paso doble, so I'm actually excited for this week. The paso just looks so... awesome. Maybe I have underlying aspirations to be a matador, but who doesn't want to dance with a "bull"? Chelsie told me she might incorporate some cowboy-ness in her and Ty's costumes for the paso (in homage to his related, bull-riding sport), but it doesn't look like they did. Lies!

Chuck Wicks & Julianne Hough: Viennese Waltz
Julianne wants to push Chuck out of his comfort zone. More girly moves then! Oh, look, it's Barbie and Ken again. I have to say their standard dances kinda make me wanna vomit because of the cuteness. (I'm not jealous.) It's just... overwhelming. The dance is pretty and he's fluid with the sweeping arm extensions, but his footwork's not there. He still just looks good, but not great. This ain't gonna get you into the top 3, man. But if anything, Chuck's costume is perfectly tailored, aka tight as hell. He kinda looks like a gray Gumby. Len thinks he came out of hibernation, but he needs to work on the finesse. Bruno says he's emerging from Julianne's shadow and needs to keep up the confidence. Carrie Ann is gonna be the party pooper, calling out a "questionable lift," and his lack of focus.
Score: 23

Lawrence Taylor & Edyta Sliwinska: Paso Doble
LT equates the paso to watching TV with the sound off. Then turn on closed captioning, duh! I would think the slower pace of the paso would be more of bulky LT's speed, but apparently not so — at least, in rehearsals. On the floor, he's got the dramatic mood down (no surprise), but looks kind of wooden. His footwork's very mechanical, which I think has been his problem all along. Stop thinking about it and just do it! Bruno dubs him the Prince of Darkness (Dracula? Ozzy?), but was disappointed he wasn't into the dance from beginning to end. Carrie Ann thinks he has a limited range of motion, but thinks he used it well. Len was frightened — in a good way. He says it's his best dance yet, even if his skills aren't there.
Score: 20

Shawn Johnson & Mark Ballas: Viennese Waltz
Mark wants to mold Shawn into a mini-Kristi. There will only be one Guch, Ballas! The top of Shawn's dress reminds me of Michael Knight's coffee-filter frock from Project Runway. Anyhow, they look gorgeous. Shawn really rocks the standards. It's lyrical, expressive and just so darn sweet. Except for that (scandalous!) almost-kiss. Hey now! Carrie Ann thinks it was beautiful and lets a lift go because it was part of an "artistic finish." Playing favorites? Len doesn't think she stepped forward on her heels as dictated by the dance. Bruno tells her not to worry because she's pretty as a picture, but wants her to keep her shoulders down.
Score: 26

Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani: Paso Doble
Melissa can't get into the intensity of the paso. She's a nice and happy person, you know. Either she's really perky too or they're both really good actors because they come across a little, uh, fake with their practice frustrations. I'm not saying it is fake; it just can appear fake. I know all this is hard, goddammit! Are they seriously paso doble-ing to "Poker Face"? I'm sorry, I can't get over this. There's also centipede growing on Tony's back. Their routine is very fast and she looks like she's having trouble keeping up with the steps. Or maybe she's distracted by the fact that she and Tony look like brother and sister. Seriously — the outfits, the teeth, the spray tan. Overall, the dance is decent, if only because she survived it and has rhythm. Len says there was a blunder in the pivot (PIVOT! PIVOT! Sorry, Friends shout-out). Bruno thinks she went for it in a very difficult routine, but there were mistakes. Carrie Ann concurs. And there was a "questionable lift." Psst... go for the "artistic finish," guys.
Score: 25

David Alan Grier & Kym Johnson: Viennese Waltz
DAG is determined to bribe the judges. He's gonna do it with wine or something. Not whine. But maybe cheese. Did Kym get the PC version of Karina's outfit from last week? Or maybe Karina just slashed off, like, 90 percent of that thing. The routine is nice, but like Chuck's, there's nothing amazing about it. DAG looks serviceable for the most part, but his frame does not. His extensions aren't, uh, extended. Plus, there's like zero chemistry between these two for this dance of romance. Bruno is under DAG's spell, but wants less gimmicks. Carrie Ann tells DAG's nostrils that she doesn't think they're moving in unison. Len loves the routine and is very pleased.
Score: 22

Gilles Marini & Cheryl Burke: Paso Doble
Gilles is pumped about the paso because he's studied martial arts... and he's brought his son along to watch. Do you hear that? It's the sound of ovaries exploding. Especially now that Gilles is topless... and shaved? Waxed? Let's go with waxed. Cheryl didn't lie about the less clothing week-to-week! I appreciate that they're not clothed in the typical red for the paso. I take back what I said about Chuck's tight clothes because dayum. Their routine is theatrical, passionate and totally striking. Someone just needs to give him the trophy now. He also gets a mini solo toward the end too, which is nice. Carrie Ann is almost reduced to tears. Len thought it was hectic and was unsure about the shirtlessness (jealous, much?). Bruno says "Jill" is going for the kill.
Score: 29

Steve-O & Lacey Schwimmer: Viennese Waltz
Steve-O gets a visit from his Jackass jackasses for some moral support, and a dance with Wee-Man. Hot! They waste some time in the beginning with some mime set-up. Sneaky, sneaky. This is actually very adorable and precious. There's something inherently endearing about Steve-O and I think that comes across best in his standards. He's more calm this week and seems in step. Len thinks it's his best dance, but doesn't want him to get too excited. Thanks. Bruno thinks his timing was on. Carrie Ann thinks the acting worked in this case and would like him to work on his posture.
Score: 18

Ty Murray & Chelsie Hightower: Paso Doble
Ty's excited for the paso because it's a man's dance and he knows how to deal with bulls, like Chelsie. Like Melissa's, I think the music's too fast for the movement, but unlike Melissa, Ty's not trying to pick up the pace and hit the steps. He's very methodical and deliberate. I think if the tempo was slowed down, it would look a lot better. That and if he's less stiff. Poor Ty. I think everyone, including him, had high expectations for the paso, and he just didn't deliver. Maybe the pressure got to him. Bruno thought it was too robotic. Carrie Ann wants her little dancer back. Len doesn't think it's up to par with his past two dances, but it's still miles better than his first one. And in other news, the sky is blue.
Score: 21

Lil Kim & Derek Hough: Viennese Waltz
Kim's worried because this is her busiest week ever and she has no time to practice. Which means it's gonna be good. Edwin McCain, notwithstanding. Kim's waltz is up there with Shawn's. It's lithe and completely bewitching. She looks more Disney princess than Shawn does, in fact. I always have a good laugh every other week or so that this graceful creature is the same person who asked, "How Many Licks." Carrie Ann feels like her mom. Do you want CA to be your mom? Len played podiatrist and found plenty (OK, some) wrong with her footwork. Bruno can't believe she made the Viennese Waltz "sassy" and loves the harmony between her and Derek.
Score: 26

So what did you think? Does Len have pec-envy? Is that why he robbed Gilles of a perfect 30? Did Melissa and Ty fall out of form? Will Chuck, LT and DAG ever make a breakthrough? Who's going to get the boot?

New Video: Gilles Marini on His Tough 'Dancing' Partner

Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke topped the "Dancing" scoreboard with their passionate paso doble on Monday night, but Gilles reveals to ET that during rehearsal Cheryl definitely means business.

"She made the choreography a nightmare, and she doesn't understand," Gilles tells ET's special "Dancing" correspondent Maksim Chmerkovskiy. "She always wants to raise the bar higher and higher and it's like, I'm not a dancer."

Cheryl's tough choreography paid off as the couple earned a high score of 29 and received praise from the judges -- and the other contestants tell ET that they are now feeling added pressure due to Gilles' impressive performances.

Check out the backstage video for more with your favorite "Dancing" stars.

Ty's latest blog post:

‘I got a little mechanical’

Tonight we got a 21 and we didn't get great comments from the judges, but at least we remembered the routine and we didn't fall down.

In that dance, I think, it's hard for an amateur to find the line between the strength and power of how you're supposed to present the Paso Doble and, at the same time, not being too stiff--evidentially I didn't find that line.

It's one of those things where if you're too fluid without being dramatic it could become a situation where the judges say you didn't portray what the dance is about.

I know I got a little mechanical, but that's because I was thinking too hard with each step--where are my hands, lunge but don't lunge too much, your front toe has to be turned out, your back toe has to be turned out and some of the steps come quick and some of them come slow.

It's same as with anything you learn – just like when I'm teaching guys how to ride – when it's mechanical that's when you see guys get stiff and they don't have any flow with the bull. When you watch the guys in the PBR who are good, at that level, and can flow that's because it's not mechanical.

Their bodies know the movement and it's just a matter of finding the groove with each individual bull.

If we survive this elimination the main thing we have to do is to go back and work on looking more fluid in the next dance because, I think, when the judges give you a critique it's your job to come back the next week having fixed the thing or things they told you to work on.

Chelsie and I both listened to what the judges had to stay and we'll try to make it better next time. All you can do is to keep on trying and neither Chelsie nor I are short on try.

DWTS Watch: Gilles Marini's Secret Injury

One week after scoring a perfect 30, French hottie Gilles Marini lost his shirt on Monday night's Dancing with the Stars — and that's a good thing! The hunky star, who shot to fame when he bared all in last year's Sex and the City film, showed off his chest and got the crowd on its feet with a dramatic paso doble that earned a 29 — the highest score of the night.

But what viewers didn’t know was that Gilles is yet another victim of DWTS’ most injury-plagued season. Backstage after the show, he revealed to OK! backstage that his shoulder is killing him—and will require surgery after the season is done!

“We never talked about it on the show tonight. I hurt so bad—my shoulder—that I need surgery,” Gilles said. “I have a separated shoulder. My best friend is Advil.”

And, with Gilles now this season’s clear leader, the show must go on. His devoted pro partner Cheryl Burke explained, “The doctor said he’ll be fine until the show’s over.”

Of his intense performance Monday night, Gilles could only say, “It was a big blur.” For her part, Cheryl remembered “the audience screaming so loud — louder than any of the seasons I’ve been on. They were crazy.”

Meanwhile, the show’s other frontrunner, former Bachelor babe Melissa Rycroft, faltered when a wardrobe malfunction caused her to lose her footing while performing the paso doble with partner Tony Dovolani.

Pointing to the bottom of her red skirt, she said, “There’s a hole that my heel got caught in during one of the parts. Thankfully, I didn’t fall.” However, they got an uncharacteristically low score of 25.

Tony said, “I know she’s angry with herself right now.”

And Melissa herself told OK!, “We got through it. It wasn’t with the flying colors I was hoping for.”

Shawn Johnson and partner Mark Ballas fared a little better, scoring a 26 on their Viennese waltz. The gymnast told OK! about her glamorous, grown-up ballroom look, “I love it. I look in the mirror and go, ‘that’s not me.’ But this is the new Shawn Johnson!”

Lil Kim and her partner Derek Hough, who have been slowly but surely inching up in the competition, also earned a 26 for their Viennese waltz. “I wasn’t expecting the scores I got," Lil admitted to OK!. "I felt very good!”

Comedian David Alan Grier, who earned a 22 for his Viennese waltz with partner Kym Johnson, told OK! he’s lost 28 pounds during DWTS. “I think I’m stalled at the 28 pounds but I have to get over 30. I’m panicking. I need to stay on the show a few more weeks. It’s like being in rehab, Celebrity Sober House. I’m not ready. We want to dance some more.”

Bringing up the rear once again, Steve-O received the lowest score of the night, an 18, for his Viennese waltz with partner Lacey Schwimmer. But on the positive side, he finally got some kind words from the judges for his mime-inspired dance.

“I relaxed a lot more," he admitted. "I wasn’t so nervous and intense.”

Meanwhile, Lacey, well known for her Goth-style black hair, has lightened it to more of a chestnut brown “I kind of felt like in a weird way since I lost weight, I had a new confidence in myself and [wanted it to be] a little more natural,” she told OK!

Cowboy Ty Murray and partner Chelsie Hightower only roped in a 21 for their paso doble. “We didn’t do as good as we could have,” Ty said. “But we didn’t fall down and forget the dance.” Judges bashed him as robotic and Ty admitted his “heart was beating really fast” during the performance. “Tonight, my fluidity got left out.”

Tune in Tuesday night to see who makes the cut!

Melissa Rycroft Drops Out of the Top Three on DWTS

Bachelor star Melissa Rycroft didn't win over the judges on Monday's Dancing With the Stars.

She and partner Tony Dovolani earned one of their lowest scores of the season, a 25 out of 30, for their Paso Doble, dropping them out of the top three.

Although judge Bruno Tonioli called her a "molting heartbreaker," Len Goodman said she had some "blunders" and Carrie Ann Inaba noted that she "needed more curve"

Sex and the City movie star Gilles Marini and partner Cheryl Burke maintained the top spot, with a score of 29 for their Paso Doble.

Marini said he wasn't bummed he didn't nab another perfect 30 score, adding that he got lost a bit during his dance.

"I had to follow Cheryl's movement completely because I couldn't hear a single note," he said.

Added Burke, "The girls screaming were so loud!"

Shawn Johnson and partner Mark Ballas got a 26 for their waltz, landing them in second place for the night.

"I felt very Marilyn Monroe-ish in this dress. A lot older," the Olympic gymnast, 17, told Us. "But I feel great. I had a great time doing the dance. I thought it was better than last week -- which was good."

Tying Johnson and Ballas: Lil' Kim and Derek Hough, who also nabbed a 26 for their waltz.

"We felt awesome tonight," Hough told Us. "It's hard to go last because you're sitting there waiting, but she was so good. This dance was not an easy one."

Although they improved slightly from last week, Steve-O and his partner Lacey Schwimmer still ended up at the bottom with only 18 points.

"I'm okay," he told Us after the show. "I am just calculating in my head how much we have to improve our dance and get votes to stay in the competition."

'Dancing With the Stars' Recap: That's Bull!

Greetings, DANCMSTRs! Inspired by Lil' Kim (as I am every day), I tried to write this recap on my Buddha Board, but it kept disappearing. What a bust! You'll have to settle for the non-relaxing, text-based version instead. While I attempt to wrap my head around just how Bob Saget and Cynthia Stevenson managed to travel from a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiive! studio audience to a cozy sofa in a matter of seconds, why not take a trippy trip (emphasis on trippy) down the sequin-encrusted Mammary Lane of last night's Dancing With the Stars week 5 performance show? Here's how the nine remaining couples ranked after performing either the paso doble or the Viennese waltz...

Gilles Marini and Cheryl: 29 out of possible 30 He's shirtless! He does martial arts! He has an adorable son who calls him ''pah-PAH''! The man can do no wrong. Well, according to DANCMSTR, Gilles' and Cheryl's paso doble was ''a bit hectic,'' but Tom and Bruno just chalked that up to pec-envy and I think it's probably just that two 30s in a row for Gilles would seem pretty ridiculous. And this show is never ridiculous. The three-item combo platter of Gilles' ripply upper half, its burnt sienna hue, and the illusion of heavily applied eyeliner caused me to zone out in one of my typical DWTS-induced hazes wherein all I can see is the vomiting-kaleidoscope graphic again and again and again — so I was actually glad when Cheryl swooped in to barely cloak Gilles in a snug, bedazzled bolero. He eventually got her back for this possibly misguided decision by ''nailing her'' in a dramatic final floor-based flourish. ''Gilles for the kill!'' He and his multi-faceted triceps are amazing.

Shawn Johnson and Mark: 26/30 We all know what was responsible for ''Shmark's'' lovely Viennese waltz...Mark's facial scruff! The magical powers of Mark Ballas' facial scruff (a new season 8 development) range from ''choreographing beautiful yet simplistic routines,'' to ''getting away with illegal lifts,'' to a feat near and dear to DWTS' heart: ''looking hot.'' DANCMSTR complimented the pair for the romantic feel of their dance, and I think that had a lot to do with the changing pace of the routine, especially near the end with that slow, drawn-out finish. Mark's solution to that one-foot-on-the-ground ''It's not a lift!'' move that most couples end up bungling was brilliant: He sort of placed Shawn on the ground so her feet were in a half split, then spun her. Those high heels look insane on such a little person. I loved how, during rehearsal, Shawn spun out of control and fell over on the same double-pirouette move she can easily pull off on a four-inch-wide balance beam, just because she was wearing those heels.

Lil' Kim and Derek: 26/30 Swathed in a long, peach-hued gown almost too reminiscent of Brooke and Derek's Viennese waltz in season 7 (right down to the rosette hairpiece), Lil' Kim floated through her dance in what Bruno called ''total harmony with your partner.'' The judges all raved about the pair's chemistry, but DANCMSTR couldn't quite get on board with some of Kim's footwork. (Anyone know the word for ''podiatrist'' in British?) Derek's choreography and smart decisions to cut out some of the moves Kim had trouble with during rehearsal really paid off this week. If Kim had been unsure of her steps (like Melissa was, at times), it's unlikely she would have been able to make a Viennese waltz look ''sassy'' — something Bruno claims to have never seen in his life. But back to that rehearsal segment for a sec: Did I just see a beige scrunchie holding back Lil' Kim's mane? Anyone remember Kate's inexplicable red scrunchie on last Wednesday's Lost? ABC, stop trying to make scrunchies happen again! They're not going to happen again. Much to my mom's eternal dismay....

Melissa Rycroft and Tony: 25/30 Melissa's outfit — the face jewels, the poufy red hair clip, the hot red skirt, the possibly-tacky-in-any-other-setting gold-based belt — could be one of my favorite DWTS ensembles to date. Sadly, Melissa couldn't execute the dance or the necessary character to match her killer look. But even to a know-nothing like me, that choreography Tony gave her was hard, and at least she kept her puh-puh-puh-''Poker Face'' on for most of the paso doble. Some of the angles in that dance were intriguingly strange, and to be honest I didn't notice Melissa messed up that badly until my second watch, on a much better HD screen. The crowd went nuts over this dance, and that speaks for itself. Speaking of the crowd, is anyone else getting increasingly annoyed at how the live audience has become as immature as the largely teen-based ones for So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol? Come on, people, this isn't Fox! There are rules! Tom was spot-on with his serious-for-once admonition to the jeering masses: ''You know, sometimes, criticism is a good thing.'' He's absolutely right. Enough with the booing already. Grow up and let the crotchety foreign man speak.

Chuck Wicks and Julianne: 23/30 Speaking of immaturity (how convenient), Chuck's ballroom-mocking attitude during rehearsal segments is wearing thin. The more times Julianne compliments him for his last-resort, exaggerated, I'll-do-this-so-she-shuts-up dance moves (''When you're making fun of it, that's what it should be!''), the sadder it becomes. I did like the clever segment editor's inclusion of a tiny clip of Chuck counting out the beat — he actually sang it out, arbitrarily choosing ''2'' as the song's high note. During the Viennese waltz, Chuck's big, sweeping arm moves came off almost as exaggerated and jerky as his signature full-body ''slap that ass good'' gesture, which Chuck executed after DANCMSTR complimented his ''higher performance level.'' Later on, it was admittedly weird that Samantha brought up the engagement question backstage, but isn't it weirder that Julianne choreographed the bent-on-one-knee move in the first place when she could have used basically anything else? I mean, Sam asks only the really obvious questions, and that was a really obvious move. What do you expect?

David Alan Grier and Kym: 22/30 This poor guy. I can't quite figure out why no one (including yours truly) can bring themselves to care about his plight in the competition. He tries valiantly in practice. He does ''impressive'' lower-body work such as high kicks and arabesques. This week, with that red tie/bib, he was even dressed like a real-life matador! Oh wait — DAG and Kym performed the Viennese waltz? Weird...his hyper-intense facial expressions and the couple's red-and-black theme screamed paso doble to me, but luckily I've been watching DWTS for eight seasons and know the difference. (If the announcer guy says ''Dancing the Viennese Waltz!'' then the couple in question is totally about to attempt a Viennese Waltz.) The smooth, sultry nature of ''I Put A Spell On You'' almost had me spellbound until DAG pulled off another of his pissing-dog leg lifts. He must feel pretty helpless after all the critiques about he and Kym's disconnectedness...were I to be greeted with such indifference from the judges and audience each week, I'd want out of there! One last thing: It was a nice touch that DAG's segment focused on him being ''in the middle'' of the pack, and there he was performing fifth out of nine contestants.

Ty Murray and Chelsie: 21/30 Oh no! A bullfighter and a bull rider are two different things! Ty and Chelsie's paso doble, set to a horrifying rendition of Heart's ''Barracuda,'' had a disappointing ''dance-by-numbers'' quality to it. (What am I, a judge?) Instead of embodying the character of the dance, Ty concentrated on following Chelsie's every move to the point at which he didn't extend most of his own moves as a result. I wouldn't go so far as to call Ty a ''Transformer'' like Bruno did, but I will take a sip of DANCMSTR's strange brew and call Ty's dance ''not my cup of tea.'' He's ill-suited to anything Latin, i.e. any dance in which stiffness is not a virtue. Luckily, the hypnotizing effects of Chelsie's animal-print, red-lined skirt could have distracted voters long enough to miss anything Ty did. His charisma and endless supply of understated yet hilarious one-liners should keep him around. When asked by Samantha if his bull riding experience gave him any advantage, Ty quickly replied, ''No, that'd be like saying 'We got a bull named Dancer. I think all the dancers will have a good go at this.''' Does he have any clue how funny he is? I can't tell!

Lawrence Taylor and Edyta: 20/30 I immediately identified with Lawrence when he complained that ''the paso doble is like watching TV with the sound off,'' because you have no idea how many times I've re-watched paso dobles on this very show on mute because the music was that atrocious. His and Edyta's paso last night wasn't exactly one of those times, because I did sort of appreciate the completely random, stop-and-go orchestral number for what it was, but come on, song selectors, this is bordering on sabotage for someone who only feels comfortable dancing ''when I know the words to the song.'' LT and Edyta's bizarre music would have fit better as accompaniment to a scary forest scene in a Disney movie, or some incredibly challenging pro demonstration performed by two intimidating Spaniards during a Tuesday night results show. It did not work for the rhythm-challenged football player who's already dissatisfied that he has yet to achieve the typical DWTS football-player favoritism he may have expected. The judges admired LT's intensity last night, but their overall response was tepid. Anyone else recognize that full-twisting floor fling from Edyta's season 5 paso with Superman Cameron Mathison?

Steve-O and Lacey: 18/30 Steve-O's Jackass gang — Johnny Knoxville, Wee Man, and Jeff Tremaine — showed up at his and Lacey's rehearsal to morally support and/or make fun of him. Either way, ''It's a win-win for them,'' Steve-O explained to Samantha. He was pretty much beggin' for it in that striped top, neckerchief, and beret, but Steve-O's enthusiastic commitment to the Viennese waltz earned him his highest score yet: straight 6s from the judges. Former mime Tom Bergeron (yes, really), earnestly awarded Steve-O his own perfect score: ''a definite 10 on the mime front.'' DANCMSTR immediately followed up with an ever-encouraging opener: ''I've always been negative about you so don't get excited.'' That's what they wanna hear! Carrie Ann admired Steve-O's acting abilities, even though shtick doesn't usually work on her. I was thoroughly convinced by Steve-O myself, but could not shake a distinct Lenny in Of Mice and Men vibe from the part of the dance where he swiveled Lacey's neck with his bare hands. (Sorry.)
