Monday’s Dancing: What You Didn’t See

Baby-Geared Tush: The seamstresses on Dancing have grown accustomed to repairing a snapped strap on one of Julianne Hough’s dresses, but this time all eyes, er, needles, were pointed at her dancing partner and boyfriend Chuck Wicks. “My shirt wouldn’t stay tucked in during the rehearsals, so they sewed my shirt to my boxers,” he told PEOPLE. “It’s like wearing a onesie. No big deal.”

Dancing Freestyle: Before the show begins, it’s commonplace for audience members get out of their seat and shake their booty on the dancefloor. First up the gents, then the ladies. This time, the ladies received a lucky surprise when Gilles Marini and Tony Dovolani joined the delighted group for a quick jig.

Honey-Voiced Host: Yes, a spoonful (or two) of sugar was just what the Dancing doctor order for host Samantha Harris, whose voice was nearly gone last week while she fought a cold. She was spotted taking two spoonfuls of honey before the start of the show. Her voice made it all the way through the show in tact.

DWTS Alumni Reunion: Dancing alum Heather Mills — sporting a new shorter do — was in the ballroom audience along with a mystery guy for Monday night’s performance. As soon as the show ended, pro dancer Kym Johnson waltzed over and gave Mills a huge hug. “She’s a got a new look going on,” says Johnson, who called Mills makeover hot. “It’s always nice to have people come back, sitting in the audience. It really is a big family when you’re on DWTS.” Also on hand: Steve “The Woz” Wozniak, who stood and cheered for friend Steve-O after he danced the Viennese waltz.

Here, There, Everywhere: A lucky audience member received an advanced copy of Tom Bergeron’s new book, I’m Hosting as Fast as I Can: Zen and the Art of Staying Sane in Hollywood, which hits stores Tuesday. Perhaps the host, who started his career at age 17 as a radio host, should re-read his own book: Following Tuesday’s results show, the busy host is scheduled to hop a red-eye to Washington, D.C., where his former gig, America’s Funniest Home Videos, will be added to the Smithsonian collection.

Julianne Hough Won't Let Chuck Wicks Slide

There have been a handful of romances formed on Dancing With the Stars, but the start of this season brought the first actual couple to the stage together in the form of country singer Chuck Wicks and two-time DWTS pro champ (and rising country star in her own right) Julianne Hough.

And while the real-life lovebirds have managed to make it through this injury-plagued season without busting a knee or busting up their relationship, they admit to OK! it's not always easy.

“I get frustrated because I want to live up to her standards," Chuck confessed to OK! after Monday night's performance show, where they earned a respectable 23 for their Viennese waltz. "She’s obviously won the show twice and she’s had her partners in the past who have been probably better dancers than me. I want to make her I think I’m one of those dancers. She’s there to kick a boot in my butt and get me rocking.”

And Julianne even admitted that there was a bit of tension in the rehearsal studio this week. “I got upset," she told OK!. "I wasn’t letting him slide.”

Another source of the tension could have been the lead-up to Sunday night's Academy of Country Music Awards, where Julianne brought home the Best New Artist award.

Julianne Hough Leaving 'Dancing With the Stars'

Here is something that is going to disappoint the millions of males who watch "Dancing With the Stars" every week just to get a sneak peak at the stunning swinger/singer — she’s stepping away.

"I wasn't planning to come back this season because I wanted to focus on my music," Hough told us backstage after taking out the Top New Artist category. "But I went back and it’s been so much fun to dance with my good friend who happens to be my boyfriend." (She then motioned to her personal and professional partner, Chuck Wicks, who was patiently waiting to congratulate his leading lady.)

So are Hough's "Dancing" days done with for good now?

"I will be taking next season off," she confirmed, adding that she'll be busy touring and bringing out the "real" Julianne Hough.
Julianne Hough stole the Academy of Country Music Awards show in Sin City on Sunday night by showing off her flawless figure in a form-fitting gold gown by Zuhair Murad, but the super-svelte star insisted that she has no restrictions when it comes to diet.

"Apparently Us Weekly says I don't eat carbs except for orange juice," she told Tarts, referring to last week's cover of the weekly magazine. "But trust me, I eat what I want. (The story) was very random. So young girls - don’t let OJ be your only carbs!"

So what is the real recipe behind the ballroom babe’s itty bitty body?

"Eat until you’re just full and keep working out," Hough responded.

But the 20-year-old almost revealed a little too much of herself earlier in the evening when her zipper came undone during her acceptance speech. Hough let out a surprised squeal mid-sentence when Jack Ingram was laid his hands on her; well we think he was "trying" to fix the wardrobe malfunction.

Yeah, I don't see her coming back anytime soon. When she won the award on Sunday, I felt in her mind, that validated her as a country singer. Julianne will not come back next season, not the season after that and probably she won't be ever coming back.

ABC is the Most-Watched Net on Monday for the 5th Week in a Row and is No. 1 Among Women 18-49 for the 12th Straight Week, the Net's Best Monday Winning Streak in Women 18-49 Since at Least 1991

"DWTS" Is Monday's No. 1 Program in Viewers the 5th Week Running, Topping CBS' "NCAA Basketball Championships" for the 2nd Straight Year

ABC's "Surviving Suburbia" is TV's Most-Watched Comedy Launch in 1-1/2 Years

ABC's "Castle" Beats NBC's "Medium" by 2.0 Million Viewers and 9% in Adults 18-49

Monday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC's Monday lineup attracted 14.9 million viewers and a 3.6 rating 9 share in Adults 18-49, standing as the most-watched Network on the night for the 6th consecutive week.  In addition, ABC won the night among Women18-49 (5.1/12) and Women 25-54 (6.4/14), including a 12-week stretch among Women 18-49.

* Extending its winning run on the night, the Net is seeing its longest winning streak on the evening since at least 1991 with Women 18-49 - predating the start of Nielsen's electronic database.

"Dancing with the Stars" (8:00-9:30 p.m.)
ABC's broad appealing "Dancing with the Stars" registered 19.6 million viewers and a 4.5 rating, 10 share in Adults 18-49, leading its time period in viewers for the 5th straight week.  In addition, "DWTS" stood as Monday's No. 1 TV program, topping CBS' telecast of the "2009 NCAA Basketball Championships" for the second year in a row.

"Surviving Suburbia" (9:30-10:00 p.m.)
The series premiere of ABC's "Surviving Suburbia" drew 12.2 million, qualifying as television's most-watched comedy launch of the season.  In fact, it was the most-watched comedy series debut in 1 1/2 years - since the series premiere of ABC's "Samantha Who?" on 10/15/07.  "Surviving Suburbia" finished second in its half-hour in Total Viewers, Women 18-34 (3.4/8) and Women 18-49 (4.6/11), while ranking No. 1 among Women 25-54 (5.8/12).

* Airing against the "NCAA Championship Game" on CBS, "Surviving Suburbia" retained a respectable 71% of its "DWTS" lead-in in Adults 18-49, 73% in Adults 18-34 and 74% in Adults 25-54.

"Castle" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC's "Castle" finished second in the 10 o'clock hour, beating NBC's veteran drama, "Medium," by 2.0 million viewers (9.2 million vs. 7.2 million) and by 9% Adults 18-49 (2.4/6 vs. 2.2/5).

* Despite airing opposite the "NCAA Championship Game" on CBS, "Castle" saw week-to-week increases among Total Viewers, Women 18-49, Adults 25-54 and Women 25-54, while holding 100% retention among Adults 18-49.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 30% currently, from 23% at the same point in 2008.
More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight
next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Dancing with the Stars Episode Recap: Tuesday, April 7, 2009

The top nine gets trimmed to eight on Season 8 this week as the dance-off returns after a one-week break. Who battled until the end? And were the results complete, uh, bull?

So I guess the encore is back for good? This is historic, guys. An encore and a dance-off. In the same episode. I don't know if I'm ready for this. We're potentially seeing the best and worst of both worlds. Too bad Demi Lovato's on this week and not Miley Cyrus. This is a missed opportunity for some Hannah Montana promotion. What happened to synergy? (Yes, I know Demi's also a Disney puppet.) Anyhow, Derek and Kim get the honors this time. It would be rather unfair to have Gilles do it each week. I kid, I kid. Kim was awesome Monday. Not awesome? Whoever singing's "I'll Be." Jeez. Find a key.

Recap time! LT thinks he had aggression and was scary. Edyta was scared too. Maybe for real. She's never been relaxed with him, like she's afraid he may blow a gasket in front of her one day. I think I'd be too. I'm sure LT's a nice guy... just maybe too serious. Ty learns there's an actual robot dance. Cuteness! DAG feels like the judges treat him like an ignored stepchild. Hey, get them to marry Gisele. Melissa ripped her dress during the dance. At least she didn't use that as an excuse Monday night. Shawn's still seeking perfection. Gilles is still shirtless. Same ol', same ol'.

First two safe couples:
Shawn & Mark
Lil Kim & Derek

Etta James is here. "At Last." Could Beyonce not make it? Wink. And now we get to watch Maks and Karina rehearse their first dance... and flash the front row her sparkly crotch. Etta sounds hot as hell. Follow this up, Demi.

Sam throws a twist and corners two unsafe couples backstage: Ty and Chelsie, and Steve-O and Lacey. Ty wants to loosen up... which in Sam's mind means he's going to be a "tiny dancer." Duh! Steve-O's dad can do math. Sam is wearing one of my old Barbie doll's dresses, by the way. I don't think it could be any more florescent if it tried.

Next four safe couples:
Gilles & Cheryl
Steve-O & Lacey (Johnny Knoxville's thrilled!)
Chuck & Julianne
Melissa & Tony

If you haven't heard, the stars' lives have changed since they started Dancing. You don't say. Ty wears makeup now. Melissa's no longer worrying about PowerPoint presentations at work (again, I must ask: You know you're not Dancing forever, right?). Gilles trots out his toddler daughter this time, which means double the ovary explosion. Kim's worried her music's suffering. Show day, Shawn reports, starts very early. Because everyone averages, like, an hour in the spray tan booth, right?

This is the filler portion, so we get Macy's Stars of Dance featuring La Reve, followed by Demi Lovato. I can safely say I have never seen or heard Demi in anything... and I wished that were still the case. I also could've done without the gigantic pink bow over Torri Smith's ass.

Backstage, Sam tries to address Derek. Who ignores her. Amazing. Meanwhile, Chuck channels his best Carrie Ann. So he's afraid of girly moves, but he's not afraid of mocking a girl. Good to know.

Last safe couple:
Ty & Chelsie

This means it's a Battle of the Initials: DAG vs. LT. Who's gonna have the last laugh?

David Alan Grier & Kym Johnson: Viennese Waltz
I didn't think they were that bad last night, but I'm not surprised they are here. DAG definitely looks like he's putting his all into it — just look at his face. His extensions look better and they're both trying to get some chemistry going on. Mission: quasi-accomplished. Len enjoyed it on Monday and thinks this was better. Bruno likes the extra edge he's got going on. Carrie Ann felt the connection. They got a 22 on Monday.
Score: 24

Lawrence Taylor & Edyta Sliwinska: Paso Doble
Are his eyes closed? They look like they are. LT's still got the intensity and aggression down again, but there's still something lacking in his step. He still can't let himself go and just dance, which is a shame. Or maybe not? Maybe he does want out? It looks more or the less the same to me compared to Monday's. Bruno thinks he has potential, but needs to perform. Carrie Ann loves his power. Len likes that he improved with difficult music. Asked if he thinks he improved backstage, LT pauses for forever and a half before going with, "Actually... I'll say yes." I guess that says it all. They got a 20 on Monday.
Score: 20

So who's saying bye-bye? David and Kym. The crowd boos, kind of. Everyone has tears in their eyes. Shocker? Yes and no. I think DAG has overall been better than LT and at least he looks like he wants it. I'd prefer to stare up his nostrils than look at LT's sourpuss again. But I don't think anyone would deny LT has the bigger fan base. It's gotta suck knowing you improved, but you're victim to an apathetic nation. This is the second time the person with the higher and improved dance-off score left. DAG says he wanted to make Kym proud. Kym blames herself for not getting his sense of humor at first and says he did make her proud. Tears, for reals.

An interesting article:

DWTS' Julianne Hough: "Exhausted" & "Overworked"

Fresh from her Academy of Country Music Awards' win for Top New Artist, Dancing With the Stars' Julianne Hough tells E! News that it's been hard juggling her two careers.

We caught up with her backstage at Dancing's elimination show tonight (bye bye David Alan Grier) and this is what she spilled about her career plans…

"I wasn't supposed to come back this season, but then [boyfriend Chuck Wicks] got on the show," she explains. "I'm going to take the next one off. It's hard for us to keep going and going and going and then of course with two different things you're trying to do you get exhausted and overworked."

The hyphenated talent continues, "I had such a great weekend at the ACMs and taking home those awards was all because of the fans and I want to prove to them that I deserve those. So I want to make the best record I can possible and show everyone I'm committed and that's where my heart is. It's hard to do both and there's a step you have to take."

But, don't worry, fans. Julianne says it's only a "break" she needs and that "I'm sure next season I'll come do guest things on the show."

Ty's latest blog:

‘Everyone’s put a lot of effort into this’

Going into tonight Chelsie just told me to loosen up, but as it goes along and you're waiting to find out if you're in the bottom two or not you feel yourself tightening up again, especially when we were the last one's to be saved.

It's a challenge and everyone's put a lot of effort into this to rise up that challenge.

You hate to see anybody go. I really hated to see David Alan Grier go because I got to know him real well. We hit off and he's a real nice guy. I think he was enjoying the process and he was working hard at it. I thought he was getting better every week.

But the thing is when you sign up for this deal you know that every couple except one is going to experience that, so Chelsie and I are just going to keep working as hard as we can and try to enjoy the process for however long it may last.

We know that our fan support is coming in. I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but it makes it a lot easier when you're trying this hard for Chelsie and I know we have so many people behind us. We're vested in this and we're giving it everything we have.

Hopefully we'll have a better week. I certainly think we can.

It's just a matter of getting the work put in and, I think, the Jive is going to be another one of those real tiring dances. This week we have a song that Chelsie handpicked. It's a Travis Tritt song called "The Girl's Gone Wild."

You don't have a lot of time to clear songs and we don't find out until Sunday night which dance you'll get if you survive, so she went to work and got the song she wanted and she seems really excited about it.

The Jive is her specialty.

All I know about it is that it's a lot of steps and really fast paced. It's also a Latin dance along with the Lindy Hop, which I didn't know. Out of the 10 dances, 5 of them are called standard and 5 of them are Latin dances. We've had two standards, which were the Foxtrot and the quickstep, and this will be our fourth Latin dance.

I'm going to YouTube it so I can see it beforehand, but what it really comes down to is, me learning our routine from Chelsie. When you watch professionals do these dances it can be very misleading about what you're in for.

Now it's back to my main job and that's getting some rest so that I can be ready to do the work when we get to practice.

But the fan support is half the deal and it's just as important. It's just like in bull riding: you can make the best ride in the world, but if you don't have a great bull it doesn't matter.

I've made a few decent rides and I've made a few questionable rides, but, I think, I've had a good bull every time.

Tuesday’s Dancing: What You Didn’t See

Steve-O’s Got Fans, Yo: The charming and sometimes bashful Steve-O knows his fans are saving him from elimination. Before the results show kicked off, he walked out to greet his guest and former Jackass co-star Johnny Knoxville. The minute he appeared from behind the curtain, a swell of applause and cheers for Steve-O took over the room. Surprised, he waved to fans and ran backstage.

Thank-You Note: Disney cutie Demi Lovato, who tweeted about her performance leading up to the show, sang her hit “La La Land,” who received a standing ovation. During a break, she grabbed the mic and told the audience: “Thank you so much for having me. I just wanted to say thank you.”

Musical Stairs: At the end of the show, it’s customary for the dancers and their partners to line up along the staircase while the elimination is announced. But the dancers and their partners did a sudden switcheroo. Melissa Rycroft stood next to Chuck Wicks, Derek Hough was by Shawn Johnson’s side, Mark Ballas and Lil’ Kim paired up, and Tony Dovolani and Julianne Hough stood side-by-side. “It was Derek’s idea,” Mark Ballas revealed. “All Derek’s idea and Tony’s.” Shawn, dressed in her sweet white ball gown, added innocently, “Not us. We’re angels.”

Ballroom Buss Stop: Everyone was sad to see David Alan Grier eliminated from the competition. The dancers took turns wishing him luck and telling him he did a good job. Grier’s fellow competitor and dance-off contestant Lawrence Taylor managed to wade through the crowd and give him a big man hug and kiss on the cheek before leaving the show.

Now That’s a Performance: Etta James’s velvety voice and soulful rendition of her hit “At Last” stopped everyone, including the dancers, in their tracks. The pros, who normally mill about during the pre-taped performances, all looked for a monitor to watch the replay. Even the audience members quietly watched the performance again. That was after they gave her not one or two, but three standing ovations.

David Alan Grier: 'We Laughed, We Cried, We Tried Our Best'

ET was backstage Tuesday night as David Alan Grier and Kym Johnson were eliminated from "Dancing with the Stars." David admits that he worked hard and has no regrets, and the remaining couples weigh in on the high standards for this season of the competition.

"I had fun while I was here," David says. "It was frustrating, exciting it was everything. I didn't think it would be this intense across the board. It sounds corny but we laughed, we cried, we did our best. There's not one minute of the day that I wasn't trying to do my best."

"This is a very tough season the standards are very high," David's partner Kym Johnson tells ET. "I'm upset that we've gone because I feel we had so much more to give but when your number is up it's up."

Watch the video to hear the other contestants bid farewell to David and reveal what they will miss about having him on the show.

David Alan Grier Waltzes Off Dancing

Actor and comedian David Alan Grier won’t be singing for the judges or dancing for the fans anymore.

The audience gasped in shock when they learned Grier and his partner Kym Johnson were eliminated on Tuesday’s DWTS results show.

The pair landed in the bottom two against Super Bowl legend Lawrence Taylor and his partner Edyta Sliwinska. In the dance-off, Grier and Johnson managed to improve their score from Monday night by four points, earning them a 24 out of 30 for their Viennese waltz. Taylor and Sliwinska, on the other hand, did no better or worse than Monday, earning a 20 out of 30 for their paso doble. But in the end, the dance-off score made no difference in the final tally.

“I think the show is about much more than who dances the best or who dances better than someone else. It’s a reality show. It’s entertainment,” Grier told PEOPLE following his elimination. “It’s been fun. It’s been crazy. And I’ve lost a lot of weight.”

For weeks, Grier said he sweated off the weight inside the studio. The result: He’s lost more than 20 lbs. and says, “I’m in great shape now and I want to keep it up.”

Another thing the Broadway actor managed to keep up were the spirits of his fellow dancers, whom he kept laughing backstage during his time on the show.

Lil’ Kim said she wanted to cry when she heard Grier’s name announced. Her partner Derek Hough, who was seen giving Grier a heartfelt hug onstage as the show credits rolled, says performance night won’t be the same without Grier. “He brought a lot of joy and laughter backstage,” says Hough. “It’s going to be a lot quieter back there.”

But perhaps the one person who will miss him the most is his teacher and partner Kym Johnson. “I’m disappointed because I was already thinking of our next dance,” Johnson told PEOPLE. “I think David had so much more to give.”

While he gave it his all, Grier, it seems, never quite won over the judges. He says, “I just don’t think we ever got onboard with the judges.”

An interesting article:

DWTS: Eliminated Star Rips into Carrie Ann

In the early '90s, David Alan Grier and Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba worked together on Fox sketch comedy show In Living Color. But after the actor and comedian was eliminated from DWTS on Tuesday night, he had some tough words for his former Fly Girl.

“She better not come within ten feet of me because she’s getting a foot in her ass," David told OK! after getting the bad news. "I feel like we never got the respect of the judges. Never!”

But David added, “I don’t regret anything. It’s a crazy show, a wonderful show. I don’t want to talk too much.”

David's ouster came as a bit of a surprise because he had bested football star Lawrence Taylor in this week’s “dance-off” between the two lowest scoring competitors. While David earned a 24 for his redo of the Viennese waltz routine, improving on his score of 22 the night before, Lawrence got the same mark, a 20, for his second version of the paso doble.

Still, it was David and his partner Kym Johnson who said their goodbyes. He told OK! he felt “kind of disappointed. I really felt like we had more to give — but it’s a dance show. We’re not going to cure cancer and I don’t think we’ll heal any babies with this show. It is what it is but you put a lot into it.”

When asked what he’d do next, David gave OK! a display of his trademark wit: “Seek counseling, go back to my therapist, get back on the meds and stop harassing Kym. I used to show up at all hours, ‘Kym, can you rehearse?’ ‘David, go away!’ You never want to hear that — ‘You’re frightening me.’”

But seriously, David is writing a book about his life called Barack like Me, which will be published in the fall. “It’s mainly about this last year leading up to Barack Obama’s election and the changes America went through and my thoughts on all of that and it ends with Dancing with the Stars. I’ve been keeping a diary and so I’ll talk about this experience.”

His big-screen comedy, appropriately titled Dance Flick, will be released May 22. “It’s a spoof on Step it Up and those kinds of movies that the Wayans Brothers did. I play the evil 1,000-pound henchman but I do this huge dance number at the end. I had to wear 60 pounds of padding.”

But in real life, thanks to DWTS, David lost 28 pounds and has never felt better. “My biggest disappointment is I did not lose 30,” he said. “I was going to power through and chew some gum and smoke some cigarettes to get those pounds down.”

Pro Kym sighed about their elimination, “That’s the way it goes. I think we were in the middle of the pack and maybe the fans felt we were okay and voted for the ones on the bottom. Comedians have not really had a good track record on Dancing with the Stars.”

The other competitors, relieved to have made it through, move on to next week. Ty Murray, who was in the bottom three this week with partner Chelsie Hightower, admitted to OK! he has some work to do. The rodeo cowboy said he and wife Jewel watched the replay of his stiff performance of the paso doble from Monday night, and “she laughed at me. It was funny.”

Inaba's Blog:

'Dancing with the Stars': Carrie Ann Inaba blogs week 5

Hello again...

First of all, I wanted to thank you for the well wishes for my cat Shadow. I do want to share with you that this week he had an exceptionally good week with his health. I think the love and support you sent him really had a positive effect. His energy was better this week than it's been in a while and his appetite is great..I think he may have even gained a few ounces. So once again, I thank you.

Okay, now, on to what you are all here for! Week 5 was quite a week!!! Another OUTSTANDING performance by Gilles and Cheryl. I think that Gilles does his homework with the movement and the character. And Cheryl does her work with him in the studio. His movements are powerful yet graceful. He really is quite a sight out there on the dance floor. It is a joy to watch someone bring out the authenticity of the dance the way he does. He is not afraid to immerse himself completely into the dance and the essence of it. There is pure commitment and there is a real connection between his dance performance and his passion. Yes, unfortunately, some of you heard his injury is acting up again and you are correct. I have heard the same thing. So, I hope that you will all send him your healing thoughts so that he will also have a speedy recovery and will not do further damage to his body. (This is a grueling process for these performers, both the dancers and their celebrity partners.)

Shawn Johnson was also wonderful this week with her partner Mark Ballas. Her VW was so sweet and pure. She looked like a little princess out there. I was noticing that Shawn really listens with an open ear to hear what the judges are saying. It's so wonderful to see when the couples are really listening to our critiques. I'll tell you that you can tell when they are listening and you can tell when they just want to take off their shoe and throw it at us. Shawn is of the first type. She really listens to us and graciously tries to take our notes back into the studio with Mark. I think this may come from her gymnastics background. All gymnasts are used to performing in front of judges. So they understand that feeling. Shawn is no stranger to being judged and I think that will help her go far in this competition.

Melissa and Tony did a really nice and dynamic routine this week also, but she lost her footing and stepped into her dress and ripped it. It was unfortunate to see because this could have been a stellar performance if she had found her footing and not lost her balance in the routine. However, it was quite good and she should be very proud of herself for what she did bring to the dance floor and how she handled the misstep.

What an special routine created by Derek for himself and Lil' Kim. They were very good this week. Lil' Kim was referring to something during the comments that was confusing everyone. Before the season starts, I try to find a gift to give everyone of the contestants as a well wish because I know how hard it is to do this (but of course, the rewards of doing DWTS are also great both emotionally and physically). I don't actually give it to them in person, because we aren't allowed much interaction with them and our schedules are so different from theirs, but i write them each a little "Good Luck card"
and my assistant puts it in their trailers at the start of the season. This year, I gave everyone Buddha Boards, which are these little rice paper-like canvases that you can do calligraphy on, or paint pictures on with water. But they dry up and the board goes back to neutral and blank every time. It's a stress reliever and a wonderful creative tool. So I thought with all the time they have in their trailers it could be a nice notepad and or stress reliever. Anyway, that is what she was referring to when I commented to her. I couldn't hear her in the studio because it's so loud in there with the audience cheering and booing the way they do. I had to ask Tom during commercial break what she said. I think she was saying that she was using it in reference to her developing grace. I think Samantha thought she said, "Voodoo" and was talking about dolls. That just goes to show you that it's very exciting in the studio and it's also
difficult to hear things because of all that energy swirling around! Anyway, Kim's performance was quite ethereal...it wasn't quite perfection, but she's on her way, it seems. We'll have to see how she does next week with the dance she gets.

Okay, I finally wanted to comment on Steve-O. He has this wonderful ability to touch the audience. Tonight when he was announced as safe, the audience went crazy -- in a good way. It seems he has become quite the fan favorite. He is so endearing with his performances. There is an innocence that comes across in his performance that resonates much more than does the fake, "shiny on the outside, nothing on the inside" performances.

Chuck and Julianne had a mixed review and then tonight he said he wanted to make me get up and shout...it was a strange impression of me but okay -- let's hope they can do it!

Lawrence Taylor and Edyta had a very difficult week with their Paso Doble. There is improvement according to Len and Bruno's scores, but I would like to see a bit more from him as far as content goes. Since he's back next week -- which was a shocker (with no disrespect intended) -- I hope he puts a bit more content into his performance. With the two-dance weeks coming up, it should be easy for them to do exactly that and add a bit more flair.

Ty fell back this week -- but as he said tonight, let's hope he brings back my little dancer!!! But let's move on to the biggest shocker of this week. David Alan Grier was eliminated.

What???!!! Oh and by the way, I know some of you were very happy to have the "dance off" removed but as you can see, it was not forever. Last week we had a double elimination so we didn't have the dance-off. This week we had a judges' encore and a dance-off. So, I think the producers are listening to the feedback and are really trying to find the right balance for our loyal viewers. Trust me, our producers work very hard at trying to keep the show fresh while keeping it familiar to our loyal audience. It is quite difficult to please everyone all the time. But they are trying to make good choices that will keep our show fun and enjoyable to watch while remaining compelling with the competitive elements. I do go back and share with them your thoughts as well, but the picture is big picture and they are the ones in charge. ; ) And they are doing a great job.

So, back to DAG. Well once again, we prove that DWTS is also a democracy. You all have a say and you spoke last night. But I wanted to remind people, especially David, that our audience -- all of you who vote -- don't vote people off, they just vote different people to stay on. It's not an "I want this person off" choice. It is rather that people sometimes can't vote for everyone they want to vote for, or maybe they just didn't think the person needed the votes. This is when you start to realize that no one is safe...this is when it starts to get even more exciting. It was sad to see my old, In Living Color alumni go so quickly. I think he was just finding his stride with the show...unfortunately, the stride came maybe too late. Anyway, DAG is a brilliant comedian. I've watched him in action and he is fabulous. He is also an incredible thespian. And now we know he's got great extension. And has a beautiful arabesque. : )

Now, onto the question that has been raised many times. By the way, thank you for your questions. I love them. The pairings of the celebrities with their partners. The answer is quite simple. The pairing is left up to the producers' discretion. It seems to me that the producers pair them up based on what they think will be the most compelling partnership -- with two people who will complement and challenge each other and will have the right balance. I think they do a great job. Of course, they are also partnered up by height as well for the reasons of the hold. I'm going to ask around though and see if I can get more answers for you.

Demi Lovato did a nice performance with Benji Schwimmer dancing with a new partner...and doing his own choreography for his performance. He's such a great talent out there with such fun energy -- and for those of you who didn't know, he is Lacey's brother.

Le Reve was so poetic. My friend and old friend from my Madonna's Girlie Show Tour days, Christopher Childers, is the director of artistic coordination for the production -- and was there supporting the wonderful performance. The shaved heads of the performers added something ominous to the performance that was so intriguing!

But -- what about Etta James. STANDING OVATION one more time!! WOW. That was a special moment. I call that an "I can't believe this is my job" moment. I am so grateful for having a job that allows me these moments to see these incredible performers live and up close the way we do. This performance by Etta James was an honor to witness. What an incredible voice she has.

Okay, a quick wrap up -- I was at the USA Dance Nationals this weekend giving out the Carrie Ann Inaba "Star Quality" Award -- for those who have that special something extra when they dance. Sometimes, it was a grace that seemed to be unmatched by any other -- or that they had incredible charisma and charm, and sometimes, they just took my breath away. Judging by the way the audience reacted, we were often on the same page with our choices. The category was created to give encouragement to those who many not take home the medals based on the normal standards of judging, but who had something that deserved some sort of accolade. And it was my honor to give out that award. My category was outside the normal standards of judging and was quite difficult to choose at times since I could only choose one winner in each of the categories I judged. I saw some familiar faces -- some of the kids who competed in the junior dance competitions we had in seasons past and Valentin Chmerkovskiy -- Maksim's brother who you might remember from the "Billie Jean" performance a few seasons ago where they danced in red, and when the Chmerkovskiy brothers danced together in that incredible "dance-off" performance. He won the adult Latin competition with a new partner and will be competing for the U.S. in the international competition. The competition was wonderful and exciting and for all of you who haven't seen a competition in person, you should try to get to one.

And on one final note, my mom was in the audience on Monday and Tuesday this week. It was special for me to have her there.

Well, that's all for now and I hope you all have a wonderful week -- have a safe and happy Easter as well...Thank you for writing your thoughts...

See you next Monday ---- LIVE!!!!!

Take Care,
Carrie Ann

Just when we were wondering how to go about promoting Steve-O’s appearance on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars tonight, Steve-O himself sends us this photo of Lacey Schwimmer representing the skull and crutches. That said, tune in this evening to see which ill-fated celebrity couple fails to boogie beyond the reach of the grim reaper of the dance floor…

'Dancing With the Stars' recap: Leave, On the Doble
Etta James sang, Demi Lovato screeched, Tom slightly winced, ''Le Reve'' lunged, and finally, David Alan Grier waltzed out of the competition

Despite a much-improved dance-off performance, higher judges' scores, and the glaring fact that he's a much better dancer than most of the remaining men, David Alan Grier left the Dancing With the Stars ballroom last night in what we can only hope was a slow shuffle peppered with his signature ''peeing dog''-style high kicks and arabesques. I never quite warmed up to the guy in the past few weeks — I've enjoyed his comedic acting whenever I've seen it, but his stern, non-effusive manner in real life was simply not a good fit for this bright and shiny show. Talent-wise, Chuck, Steve-O, or DAG's dance-off opponent Lawrence Taylor should have gone home first, but to be honest I'm not surprised it was DAG instead. I think he (unintentionally) made people uncomfortable. I'm sad for the self-proclaimed ''old, wet food stamp'' of the season, because he was clearly one of the hardest-working contestants. Looking forward, we can only hope that DAG's elimination will go down in history as The Night The Powers That Be Finally Realized The Dreaded Dance-Off Was So...Incredibly...Abysmally...POINTLESS!

Aggghhh! So much tension last night! Backstage with Samantha right after their paso doble, Lawrence took huge, ambiguous pauses before straining to answer two questions in the upbeat, positive way he's supposed to on live TV. I'm guessing he acted so weird right then because he thought (as I did) that his Tuesday night performance was no better (not even any different, really) than Monday's, and that the judges only raved about it for dramatic effect. Put simply, he felt played. At this point, I think LT is supremely fed up with the contrast between a grueling week of dance practice and the meager payoff of a set of judges' comments that basically amount to ''meh'' each week. Of course, that's the name of the game on DWTS, especially if you're not that talented and stick around anyway due to the popular vote. He kept himself in check this week, but LT might snap pretty soon — that is, if the normally serene Lady Legwarmer doesn't snap first. LT seems like he's dying to fly back to Florida to play golf...and engage in possible lap dances with his buddies. Golf never demands that he don a bolero (though his lap-dance customers might splurge for that, as an ''upgrade''). The Giant just misses his golf! This probably explains his watery eyes (!!!) during the final group hug.

The legendary Etta James showed up to sing a very different version of ''At Last'' than the one we're used to hearing in restaurants (or, in my case, on a playlist entitled ''Calm The **** Down''). You may recall how not happy Etta was that Beyoncé had performed her signature song for President and First Lady Obama at ABC's Neighborhood Ball in January. (Ever the bedazzled patriot, I went ahead and critiqued the First Couple's inaugural waltz as if they were DWTS contestants in this ridiculous PopWatch item. Looking back, the feathers on Michelle's gown significantly upped her performance value.) Accompanying the seated Etta were Maks and Karina, the recently inaugurated First Couple of Dancing With the Stars. Sorry, Alec/Edyta and Jonathan/Anna, but work on becoming a bit more Flashy/Polarizing and you'll all have a decent shot at the next term! Some of Maks and Karina's lifts were incredible, especially the ''Allow me to introduce my fianceé's crotch to your face'' one they did early in the dance for one lucky corner of the crowd. I also loved how excited Samantha was to announce that Etta was performing ''live!'' At first I had love/hate issues with Sam's screechingly pink Ballroom Barbie gown, but after a few lingering shots of her, I realized the color perfectly matched the rest of the crazy set, not to mention she looked amazing in that thing. Could anyone else not stop staring at her lightly beaded ''belt''?

Speaking of things that are screeching, Disney darling Demi Lovato, a.k.a. the teenager my colleague Michael Slezak once referred to as ''something called a Demi Lovato'' as if she were a gross side dish he refused to let the rest of his higher-quality food touch, murdered our ears with a half-growling, half-caterwauling performance of something called ''La La Land.'' Luckily, Benji Schwimmer and Tori Smith were in da ballroom to distract from the audio element of this segment with an outpour of horrifying tongue wags from Benji and the giant pink bow on Tori's butt. Perhaps that costume was a ''subtle'' nod to this tragic Ugly Betty outfit from early March. At least none of ''our pros'' had to dance to this monstrosity — in fact, I'll put a positive spin on this and say the frantic nature of both song and dance complemented each other quite nicely. Don't put nicely in quotes. Don't put nicely in quotes. Did I say nicely? I meant ''nicely.'' If you get the chance, go back and watch the way poor Tom slightly winced right after delivering the awesome news that ''Tickets for Demi's summer tour go on sale April 25th.''

Next week's dances:

Rumba

    * Shawn & Mark
    * Melissa & Tony
    * Chuck & Julianne
    * Steve-O & Lacey

Jive

    * Lil' Kim & Derek
    * Gilles & Cheryl
    * Ty & Chelsie
    * Lawrence & Edyta

--------------------------------------------
JIVE

    * Its's a type of swing
    * You will see lots of kicks and flicks and twirling of the woman.
    * The feet/legs should actually be under the body and the knees should always be close together.
    * Jive doesn't move around the dance floor like other dances.
    * Watch movements where they will stand on one foot and kick down at the same time.
    * Look for kicking where toes are always pointed

Rumba

    * A story of love
    * It's about the lady trying to get the man by using her womanly charms. Should see use of teasing and withdrawal
    * It is the most sensual of the Latin dances.
    * You should see romance
    * The emphasis is on the body. Hip actions are produced by controlled transfer of weight from foot to foot.
    * Look out for figure-eight hip rolls - this is a hip roll where the hips alternate in a forward movement.
    * There are lots of slow stylish body shapes in the Rumba.
    * When it comes to the footwork, look for a straightening of legs, and swiveling action in the feet.
    * The walks should be strong and direct.
    * The body never stops changing its shape.
    * No heel leads - the dancers must not walk on the heels of their feet; they are on the balls of feet only.
    * Look out for the Cucaracha step - rock to the right or the left, then replace and close.
    * Look out for the Fan position - the woman goes on the man's left side at arms length and at 90 degrees to the man

Jewel ‘So Thought’ Husband Ty Murray Was Leaving Dancing

Tuesday’s Dancing with the Stars results show was a nail-biter for one studio audience member in particular: Jewel.

“When they said Steve-O was safe, I so thought you were going home,” Jewel says to her husband, rodeo star Ty Murray, in a new video the couple posted Wednesday on MySpace.

Asked if he was scared, Murray responds, “I wouldn’t say I was scared, but I thought there was a good chance we might have a dance-off last night.”

And the prospect of repeating his paso doble wasn’t a welcome one, says Murray, who notes, “The main thing I needed to do was loosen up, and as it’s getting towards the end there, you start tightening up.”

It was that uptightness that led the judges to label Murray’s paso doble “stiff” following Monday’s performance. Jewel, however, liked what she saw — especially what she calls Murray’s “paso face”: furrowed brows and an exaggerated frown that Murray recreates for the camera.

But it turned out Murray and partner Chelsie Hightower had nothing to worry about — at least not for another week since David Alan Grier was sent home after a dance-off against Lawrence Taylor.

As for Grier’s ouster, Murray says it came as a surprise. “He was really enjoying the show and getting into it,” says Murray of the funnyman. “I thought he was doing better every week.
