Big Brother 8 is confirmed

Skeet Ulrich. Alyson Hannigan. And Plinko!

Now that, my friends, is a star-studded line-up. And it is exactly what's on tap at the Ritz-Carlton in Pasadena, California, where we TV reporter types are holed up in a ballroom, ready for CBS' press day to unfold. Up first, the executive session, followed by a panel with Jericho, a Bob Barker farewell party (with today's biggest star, Plinko—and, yes, we get to play it!) and a little get-together with CBS stars (including the cast of How I Met Your Mother—woo-woo!).

Truth told, it's one of the lighter-ish days here at Press Tour, which, let me tell you, I can use after last night's NBC party. I ended up hanging out late into the night with the likes of David Denman (Pam's ex, Roy); Zachary Quinto (yes, Sylar—I'm a brave soul!) and Leonard Roberts (D.L.), whom I both completely adore now; and my dear Masi (Hiro), who is always a treat. He was completely engulfed by reporters all night long, but made time to reminisce about our good ol' roulette days. (Leonard also told me about a crazy bike accident that nearly killed him—remind me to tell you about that in our next chat.)

Okay, executive time. Right now, CBS president Nina Tassler is boasting about how CBS is the most watched network, blah, blah, blah (yeah, CBS, we know you're solid!) and saying they're still deciding on the summer schedule. Big Brother is the only sure pickup, and she doesn't yet know if Rock Star will be back. Boooo...

As for The Class, the show is getting slightly retooled to focus more on three romantic relationships. (Like Friends? Makes sense, since it's from a Friends producer.) Tassler says the show will run out its season somewhat early, and beyond that, its future is not yet known.

Ruh-roh. Bad news (possibly) for Lost. Criminal  Minds is airing after the Super Bowl this year, and Tassler says she's excited about what it could do for Criminal's viewership, given what happened with Grey's Anatomy.

10:00 Update: Phew! Tassler says William Petersen is contracted to CSI next year.  Liev Schreiber is not a replacement for him. Still, they are very excited Liev is joining the show.

Tassler says there are no plans to air Showtime's Dexter on CBS (both networks are owned by the same parent company), because it's "too gnarly." Hmph. I guess she's right.

12:15 Update: The Jericho session just ended, and I'm not feeling so well. It could be last night's sushi, but more likely it's this little alarming fact we all just stomached: Jericho is following "the Lost model." I know, I know. You might be feeling a little nauseous now, too, so chug a little Pepto before you continue...

According to the show producer Carol Barbee, Jericho's main questions will  be addressed by the end of the season (yay!). We'll know more about the identity of Lenny James' character (Rod), where Skeet's character was all that time (before the show started) and even who was behind the bomb. But (and here's where the bubble bursts) according to Barbee, none of the big mysteries will be resolved, and there will be "many more questions." Ay! How many unanswered Q's can one girl take when it comes to her favorite shows?! That's it. I'm gonna start watching Jeopardy.

CBS still says yes to 'Big Brother'
Net approves eighth season of reality show
By JOSEF ADALIAN

"Big Brother" will be back for another round of real-people melodrama.
CBS has greenlit production on an eighth season of the hit summer sudser, which has become a fixture on the net's warm-weather sked. After pausing last year for an "all-star" edition featuring past contestants, skein will return to its normal "real" people format this year.

Julie Chen is on board to once again host "Big Brother," which first debuted in 2000, weeks after "Survivor" launched. Allison Grodner Prods. will produce, in association with Endemol USA.

There's one behind-the-scenes twist on "Big Brother" this summer: After seven seasons, exec producer Arnold Shapiro has decided to step down from that role and will instead serve as an exec consultant.

Grodner, who's been exec producer alongside Shapiro since both joined the skein in 2001, will now produce the skein via her self-titled banner. Also returning as exec producer: Rich Meehan.

Shapiro said he was "gratified that Allison and I were able to successfully 're-invent' BB2 and turn the series into an annual summer hit."

Grodner indicated that last year's "all-star" edition has prompted producers to think of the upcoming season of the skein as a new starting point. "We consider 'All-Stars' sort of the end of an era, and now we're getting a chance to start once again with a fresh cast and new twists," she told Daily Variety.

Allison Grodner Prods. is also producing the Eye's upcoming untitled kiddie quizzer (Daily Variety, Dec. 7) .

When they say "real", I hope they mean by no wannabe actors, models, etc.  I want a cast like BB2 and BB3, those were the casts I enjoyed the most.

more from CBS:

02.01.2007 CBS PICKS UP THE HIT SUMMER SERIES "BIG BROTHER" FOR ITS EIGHTH EDITION
LOS ANGELES, February 1, 2007 -- CBS has picked up the reality series BIG BROTHER, hosted by Julie Chen, for an eighth installment to be broadcast this summer.

Last season's BIG BROTHER: ALL-STARS started with 20 All-Star Houseguests and after 71 days and 1,704 hours, Mike "Boogie" Malin, a 35-year-old restaurateur originally from Concord, N.H., was crowned the winner of BIG BROTHER: ALL-STARS and claimed the $500,000 prize.

BIG BROTHER 8 will follow the relationships and conflicts of players who live together in a house outfitted with dozens of cameras and microphones recording their every move 24 hours a day.  One by one, the Houseguests will vote each other out of the house.  At the end of three months, the last remaining Houseguest will receive the grand prize of $500,000.

BIG BROTHER premiered in July 2000 and has been a key component of CBS' summer programming ever since.

BIG BROTHER 8 will be executive produced by Emmy Award winner Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan, in association with Endemol U.S.A.  Academy Award and Emmy Award winner Arnold Shapiro will serve as an executive consultant on the series.

Sorry for Lost fans if it ends up being bad news.  Criminal Minds is really a great show too, and hope it gets a boost from being aired after the Super Bowl.

Cool that Peterson is staying for another year!  The show just wouldn't be the same without him.  He's a great actor and fits the CSI role quite well.

I watched Jericho and can hardly wait for it to start up again.  I'm happy to know the main questons will be addressed before season's end.  They really left us dangling for sure.  With this type of show...if it's done right...there will always be "many more questions".  I just wish they'd leave most of the "soap opera" stuff out though!

Yep, PPG.  I'll miss those three, but looking forward to new faces.

Wish they'd replace Julie Chen.  How about Janie Or Will replacing her?!
Eh.  Afraid Chen is stuck there forever, esp since her hubby is THE big wig of CBS...

How much longer to I have to wait for the domestic version of Big Brother?  4, maybe 5 more months?!  Thank God Big brother UK starts in May.  That's only 3 months   ;D

Replace the Chenbot with whom?  I vote Bunky as the new host.  He'd cry every time a HG is evicted, and he'd put so much emotion to the vote read.  LOL!

:waves: RFF's Beefcake!  Hope to see you again when we're live feeding!

Summer of Love?  Sounds like the twist would be an all-couple season, like BB6's partner twist.  Putting a bunch of single people with temptations sounds too much like "Temptation Island".  Nah, I'd have have it be Big Brother: All these people are strangers.

BB2 cast real? I'm in the middle of watching it right now, there's plenty of wannabes in there - I thought it was hilarious when Kent got evicted and he blew it by saying "You can hardly call them real people when 9 out of the 12 houseguests already have agents!"

I bet CBS loved him for that one!
