What famous person reminds you of yourself? Kerry Washington (Olivia Pope) gets down to business and commands a room with ease. Great sense of style, knows how to have fun, intuitive, graceful and self-confident.
What famous person reminds you of your teammate? Mayim Bialik, both on and off of “The Big Bang Theory.” Number one, Mayim (yes, we are on a first name basis) and Amy resemble each other and have many similar mannerisms and personality traits. Both are smart, goofy, curious, intelligent, driven and knowledgeable of random things.
What scares you most about traveling? Having to get one too many shots. I believe pain is weakness leaving the body but shots just don’t do it for me!
What excites you most about traveling? Being introduced to new cultures, people, experiences and opportunities beyond what I can imagine. I also enjoy learning, growing, building memories and trying new ice creams/frozen desserts!
Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on The Race together: The biggest challenge we will face on the Race will most likely be over-thinking situations and challenges. As scientists we have learned to be very analytical.
Pet peeve about your teammate: Amy talks a lot. So do I, but sometimes she talks at times when we need to focus on the task at hand and/or about something totally unrelated, getting us off task.
What country and place would you most like to visit and why? Pretty much any place I have not been! I love to travel and will visit anyplace if given the opportunity to do so!
What do you hope to accomplish by running The Race (other than winning one million bucks)? I hope to grow our bond outside of the lab. I also hope to show the world that scientists are more than just lab coats, beakers and goggles. Lastly, I hope to inspire others to pursue something they have always wanted to do… that is what the Race is for me!

What is the accomplishment you are most proud of? I had an “experiment gone wrong” incident during one of my internships that surprisingly turned into something really interesting that the company wanted to pursue further. It was one of those moments that made me realize why I love science.

Biggest challenge you and your teammate will face on The Race together: We will have to rely on each other in ways that we haven't before. Our most important responsibilities (research) are independent from each other; this will not be the case on the Race!
Pet peeve about your teammate: She can be SO picky. She yells at me when I drink coffee or open the refrigerator in our office. She says that the smells bother her which is ridiculous. It's like living with a crazy person.
What country and place would you most like to visit and why? The Galapagos Islands. There are so many unique landforms, animals and plants. Plus, it is a tropical place with gorgeous beaches and a rich scientific history.
What do you hope to accomplish by running The Race (other than winning one million bucks)? I want to prove to myself and the world that scientists are more than beakers and lab coats. I also hope to grow our relationship outside of lab, most of what we do centers around food science and our research.

Badger duo experiences an amazing summer on ‘The Amazing Race’
Amy DeJong and Maya Warren had a truly epic summer, but they can't tell you about it.
The UW-Madison food science grad students spent the month of June zipping around the globe as part of the cast of the 25th edition of "The Amazing Race," the Emmy Award-winning CBS television reality show. Along the way, they competed against 10 other two-person teams in various mental and physical challenges, with the goal of beating their rivals to the final destination — and claiming the $1 million prize.
Suspense is a critical element of the show, so DeJong and Warren — like all of their fellow cast members — have to be very tight-lipped, at least for now. But one thing they can say: Their scientific training proved to be an asset.
"A big part of being a scientist is being comfortable in situations with a lot of details and a lot of unknowns, where you have to persevere. If an experiment fails, you have to keep trying," says DeJong, who studies candy crystallization in the lab of food science Professor Rich Hartel. "Those things directly apply to the race. You have to keep going. You can't give up."
It was Warren's idea to try out for the race. She's an avid fan of the show, and when she learned there would be auditions in Chicago last October, she brought it up in conversation in Hartel's lab, where she studies the physical properties of ice cream. DeJong, who grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, was game.
"It sounded like such a unique, fun-sounding opportunity, so I said, 'Why not?'" says DeJong.
Right from the start, Warren felt they had a good shot of making it onto the show.
"We weren't the typical cookie-cutter couple," says Warren, a native of St. Louis. "We would bring something very different to the table."
Her hunch was right. They were selected, but had to keep the fact largely a secret, only sharing information on a need-to-know basis. When they both took off in late May, most people thought they were heading off for normal, separate summer vacations.
Word got out on May 31, when the 2014 race launched and CBS revealed the identities of the cast members.
Fast-forward four weeks. When DeJong and Warren returned to campus, re-entry was a little tough, particularly for Warren.
"I missed the thrill. I didn't necessarily want to get back into the hustle and bustle of research," she says. "But now it's cool, and it was fun to see everybody's excitement and to feel all of the support. People would stop us in the hallway to say congratulations, and ask a bunch of questions that we couldn't answer."
Fortunately, it's almost time to watch their adventure unfold. The season premier of "The Amazing Race" airs on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. central time, with the finale in early December. DeJong and Warren's team is named — and can be followed on Twitter using the hashtag — #SweetScientists.
DeJong plans to watch the premier with friends and family in Madison. Warren is hosting a "red carpet event" for around 60 family members at her parents' home in St. Louis.
The following week, the food science department plans to throw a celebratory pizza party, where faculty, staff and students can (re)watch the premier alongside the new celebrities.
"It was an experience of a lifetime, and I hope it helps inspire other people to do the things they've always wanted to do," says Warren. "The sky isn't even the limit."

The sweet science of 'The Amazing Race'

Maya Warren wants the world to know something about scientists: “We’re not just nerds.”
Warren, 29, intends to prove that on “The Amazing Race.” The Rosati-Kain High School graduate, who is completing her doctorate in food science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, races around the world with friend and lab mate Amy DeJong in the 25th season of the Emmy-winning reality competition, now underway on CBS.
Warren and DeJong compete as “the Sweet Scientists” because of their specialties. Warren studies ice cream (“the microstructure, behavioral and sensorial properties of frozen-aerated treats”); DeJong, candy.
And yes, Warren’s early interest in frozen desserts was sparked in part by visits to Ted Drewes. Her on-screen tag reads Madison, Wis., but Warren is a St. Louisan through and through, explaining that she grew up in the Ferguson-Florissant area and attended grade school at the Cathedral Basilica.
“I always loved food, and I loved science, and I was so excited when I found out I could combine them as a career,” she says. “And ice cream — who doesn’t love ice cream?”
Warren had been a fan of “The Amazing Race” for years and had always thought she would try out some day. “I imagined I’d race with my future husband, but I’m not married yet, so that was a problem.”
When she learned about an open casting call in Chicago last fall, she brainstormed with DeJong, 24, with whom she shares a lab.
“I was going to be in Chicago then anyway, to run the Chicago
Marathon” (see? not just a nerd) “and I talked her into going along. We had nothing to lose, so why not?”
The two wrote a skit and got a tryout in which “we blabbed and blabbed.” They went away thinking, “cool, that was fun.”
Casting producers moved them along. “I think they liked our careers,” Warren says. “They’ve never had a team of women Ph.D. candidates before, and the fact that our specialties are ice cream and candy made us unique. We just had to make sure our personalities matched.”
In last Friday’s season premiere, viewers briefly got to know Warren as a little dynamo, always bouncing with enthusiasm, and DeJong as lankier, with a slightly goofy demeanor. They seemed to work well together, although by finishing in the middle of the pack on a difficult challenge in which three other teams gave up, they didn’t get much screen time.
As the race goes on, though, audiences may see that this duo showed up well prepared.
“We’re scientists, so we analyzed the show,” Warren says. They watched many previous seasons to see “how to get the most done the easiest way. We studied the challenges and tried to figure out what we’d do in similar situations.”
They worked out every morning in the lab, pushing themselves through the Shaun T “Insanity” routine. “I’ve always been athletic; I’ve run marathons and competed in triathlons,” Warren says. “Amy isn’t super athletic, but we knew we both needed to be stronger both mentally and physically.”
Warren taught DeJong how to drive a car with standard transmission, a skill that has tripped up competitors in the past. They brushed up on navigation and maps.
“But our approach was to have fun, to smile and laugh our way around the world. We wanted to show what scientists look like and what scientists can do. We hope along the way we can inspire young girls to branch out and think about science.”
Warren also took the opportunity to try new ice cream whenever she could, which wasn’t that often. “We were running, and we didn’t want to spend the money. But I did ask for a free sample whenever I could.”
Last weekend, Warren was home in St. Louis, watching the season premiere with close to 80 family members and friends. “I’m so excited to see it with them and let them see us,” she said before the episode aired. “It’s been over since June, and, of course, we haven’t been able to talk about it.”
“The Amazing Race,” she says, “was so much more than I expected it to be. It’s so much harder, so exhausting, but also so much fun. I loved it. I still miss it a lot.”

They are definitely one of my favourites this season. Cool and calm, completing challenges in average positions but at least they are not struggling, but randomly doing really well at times as well.
Most importantly, I think giving the pair of shoes to Adam and Bethany will help them in a long run and forge a positive relationship between the two teams actually!

C&EN Talks With "The Amazing Race" Team Of Amy DeJong And Maya Warren
“It’s a lot harder than it looks,” says Amy DeJong about the reality TV program “The Amazing Race.”
DeJong and fellow University of Wisconsin, Madison, food science graduate student Maya Warren competed in the race earlier this year. The show, now in its 25th season, pits 11 two-member teams against each other as they follow clues and confront a series of challenges that take place across the globe. The winning team gets $1 million.
The show is airing episodes from DeJong and Warren’s race now. As of C&EN press time, the team had weathered the first three sets of challenges, which included finding a treasure chest in the U.S. Virgin Islands, stepping through the drills of British palace guards in England, and herding sheep in Scotland.
A longtime fan of the show, Warren instigated the food science duo’s participation in the race. She got her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Carleton College, then interned for a cereal company before starting graduate studies. Cereal grain was not her thing, she says, but she found her passion at Wisconsin. “I told myself that I was going to find what it is that I love, and I really love ice cream,” she says. “Now, I dissect ice cream.” Her graduate work with adviser Richard W. Hartel focuses on understanding the microstructure behavior, such as how fat globules coalesce, and sensorial properties of frozen desserts (J. Food Sci. 2014, DOI: 10.1111/1750-3841.12592).
A year ago, Warren discovered that the show was having an open audition in Chicago. She talked DeJong into trying out with her. They had one minute to convince the judges to let them advance.
“It’s so very surreal,” DeJong says. “I still can’t even believe that we did it.” Also a member of Hartel’s group, DeJong got her bachelor’s degree in food science at Wisconsin. “What drew me into food sciences is that there are a lot of different sciences that combine to understand something that people can relate to—everybody can relate to food,” she says. Now she’s working to understand different crystal polymorphs of sorbitol, a sugar alcohol used as a sweetener in products such as toothpaste, chewing gum, and fondants.
The attraction of “The Amazing Race” to both DeJong and Warren was the challenge. “It was a unique way to prove ourselves outside of the lab,” DeJong says.
To prepare for the race, the #SweetScientists—as they’re known on Twitter—worked out twice a day for about six months. Because “The Amazing Race” challenges are so varied, they tried to mix things up and do things that were outside of their comfort zone and learn new skills. Warren taught DeJong how to drive a manual transmission, for example. DeJong also learned to use a compass, which came in handy with the treasure-hunting challenge.
“We also spent quite a bit of time talking to each other to learn about each other outside of lab,” Warren says. “We tried to learn each other’s stress and pressure points.”
Going into the race, DeJong and Warren thought that their science backgrounds would help them figure out clues, analyze how best to do a challenge, and stay cool under pressure. At the same time, they have a tendency to overthink. How did that turn out? Watch the show, they say.
That’s what they’re doing. “It’s been strange to see us on TV and funny to relive the whole experience and see what everybody else was doing while you were focused on yourself,” DeJong says.
“I really enjoy watching it with people and have people getting excited for us,” Warren says. (Their adviser, however, is not among the viewers. Although DeJong and Warren call him incredibly supportive, he’s “not a reality TV fan,” he tells C&EN.)
Returning to the lab after the race was a bit tough, the team admits. “For me it was quite difficult to go back to the regular routine,” Warren says. “You have an adrenaline high for so long, then you get back home and say, ‘Now what do I do?’ ”
“In the race, you have a really intense focus for the hours it takes you to do a challenge,” DeJong adds. “It doesn’t quite work that way in research.”
Now that they are back in the groove, DeJong and Warren are glad they took the leap. Says Warren, “It was the opportunity of a lifetime and a priceless thrill.”

But I’m glad it happened early because we were able to bounce back from it and talk about it and run the race even better than we previously had.

'The Amazing Race' Q&A: How the Scientists became 'TAR' top dogs

When EW caught up with the 25th winners of The Amazing Race, they were hoarse from celebrating all weekend with their “race family,” but still flying high from the $1 million win. Amy and Maya—Candy Scientists, by trade—beat out three much more physically imposing teams, two-thirds of whom were professional athletes (one-third of whom were potentially teeth-cleaning super humans), to become only the third all-female first-place finishers in TAR history.
Amy and Maya ran an impressively academic Race, but more importantly to them, they played the game well while “staying true to themselves.” That often becomes a meaningless phrase, but The Amazing Race is a game where it’s easy to turn up sides of yourself you’d prefer stay buried under hypothetical behavioral questions of “How would I act in a zombie apocalypse?” and “What if I lived in Game of Thrones’ world?”
Say, if you had been traveling through 20 cities all over the globe with little sleep and more sweat than you knew your body could contain, all while harboring two stress fractures in your pelvis, and then you were asked to deliver a couple of 20-pound bunches of coconuts within a maze of Moroccan vendors while the other people doing the same thing could literally bench press you…y’know, then it might become a challenge to stay true to the version of yourself that doesn’t yell at your partner and start throwing coconuts at innocent Moroccan bystanders. And for Amy and Maya, it was tough, but overcoming that challenge, and running the race with smiles on their faces and a little hobble in their gait is exactly what won them the race. EW caught up with the Candy Girls to discuss their underdog status and how they hope they inspired viewers.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Your approach to The Amazing Race—the approach that helped you win—was very academic, very studied. Have you always been fans of the show?
Maya: I’ve been a fan of the show for years; I’ve always wanted to go on it. There’s a clip that just came out in this past episode where I’m saying I wanted to go on it with my future husband. But since that husband is nowhere to be found, I knew that I needed to change that a little bit.
You were always the first to refer to yourselves as “underdogs,” but you must have had some you could win…how did you rank your chances going in?
Amy: Physically, we were underdogs; toward the end, it was us against a lot of professional athletes. But throughout the whole race we believed that if we ran our race and really focused and worked hard that we could do it.
Maya: And from the get go, I had an innate feeling that we were going to win. I never thought that we were going to lose. I just knew it.
Well, you were certainly the most positive team! You played such a strong game as partners—we never even saw a cross word between the two of you! How did you work on your communication with one another?
Amy: I think a lot of it is just that we’re supportive and have a lot of faith in each other as teammates. We watched a lot of episodes going in and we saw people arguing, but there’s no reason to argue. You only have a certain amount of energy in the day, why waste it on arguing? We’re a team, and I think we didn’t want to let each other down. We knew that the other was going to do their best, and that’s really all you can expect out of anybody.
Maya: And we knew that we had somewhat more of an advantage just being friends and lab-mates than the people who are married or dating because there’s an emotional tie that they have that we don’t. We did definitely have in our moments, but we made sure to never let the other teams see that, because that could be seen as a weakness… which it definitely was for Brooke and Rob.
Nowhere was your support for each other and perseverance more evident than in watching Amy run the entire race with an injured leg. It wasn’t even revealed to the audience until a few weeks in!
Amy: I actually didn’t find out until I got home—I got an MRI pretty much immediately when I got back and found out that I had two stress fractures in my lower pelvis. So, yeah, it was a pretty bad injury [laughs] but at the same time, you just have to focus and work hard.
With as much as you had to push to keep up physically, what do you recall as the toughest leg for the Scientists team?
Amy: I think it was probably the second Morocco leg. Both Morocco legs were tough for us; it was very hot and we got very lost. We still had fun though, so there’s no single leg I can look back on and say we didn’t enjoy it.
Maya: I actually think the toughest leg for us a team was London/Oxford.
Amy: Oh, yeah…

I know you were really excited to be the third ever all-female team to win the Race and made some great comments after your win about inspiring people to do more than just what they think they can do. What did it mean to you to be an all-female team winning The Amazing Race?
Maya: For us, being and all female team—especially a young, academically driven all female team, and me being a person of color, as well—it’s hopefully inspiring to people along the way, especially young girls that you can sort of think outside of the box and be more than you think you can be. Because Amy and I are just like everyone else. There’s nothing—okay, I guess we’re pretty special people [laughs], but everyone is special in their own way. It’s just knowing how to use what you’ve been given to your advantage and I think we did that and hope we inspired other people to do that as well.

Edit played a huge part in determining the likeability of the winner again~
I really would have loved to see that meltdown, even if it was in secret scenes. They released Dennis/Isabelle's Leg 1 Airport fight+ their Pit Stop clue being dropped into the water and them arguing trying to read the completely destroyed clue, why couldn't they have shown Amy/Maya's meltdown? :cmaslol
Would certainly have made them more visible in early episodes.

To add some background about Amy's pelvis injury, Maya told us at the TAR finale party that when they were chosen to be on TAR, Amy realized that she needed to work on her conditioning. Maya runs marathons and Amy wanted to keep up. She started running. A lot. While wearing a backpack. She overdid it and hurt herself. Amy wanted to stay on TAR, so she used a couple of different pain medications during the entire race. Even still, she said she had sharp pains in her leg with every step she took.
I'd say that rates up there with the most courageous efforts ever on TAR.

My respect for Amy grew so much ever since the finale aired. How she won it for the team and then finding out about her injury! If I were to be her, I would probably not even last that long. Or quit like some team on TAR 22 :cmas11

Life is sweet for Amazing Race winners from Madison
MADISON -
Known on the CBS reality show "The Amazing Race" as the "sweet scientists," Amy DeJong and Maya Warren are focused on their research in a UW-Madison lab, but are still relishing their come-from-behind win. "We had so much fun, excited to bring the victory to Wisconsin," DeJong said.
The pair had known they claimed victory for months, but were sworn to secrecy until the Season 25 final aired last December. Since the big victory, how has life changed? Not much, according to Warren. "When I wake up in the morning, I don't think about the Amazing Race, I don't think about winning, I think about my research," she said.
Both DeJong and Warren are Ph.D. students in food science at UW-Madison, who specialize in researching candy and ice cream. That fact may have helped Amazing Race competitors underestimate them. "They called us 'the candy girls' instead of Ph.D. students," DeJong said.
Turns out it was a bad idea for Amazing Race opponents to overlook them. They say one of the best parts about winning was inspiring other women. "Other female scientists have emailed us to say thank you for finally showing the world that we are a force to be reckoned with. I mean we can have fun, we aren't the nerdy awkward people that are always in the media," DeJong said.
Warren says she still gets recognized in grocery stores, and still doesn't know just how to react. "I'm like, 'how do you know me?' but then I'm like, 'oh yeah, I was on the Amazing Race, you do know me!'" she said.
Both Warren and DeJong now use their celebrity to help recruit for the Badgers. As for the $1-million dollar winning prize, both put their share into savings, but both say the joy they felt from the experience was never about the money. "It was one of those things where we were underestimated but we new what we were capable of and we had fun," DeJong said.
"I hope we inspired you to go out and do something random, like we did,"Warren said.
DeJong has a few years left in her pursuit of a doctorate degree. Warren is scheduled to earn her Ph.D. later this year.

You may know Maya Warren for her $1 million victory, shared with fellow food science grad student Amy DeJong, in the latest edition of the CBS reality show “The Amazing Race.” You likely do not know that, after she receives her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in August, she intends to homogenize her TV experience with her knowledge of ice cream, outgoing nature, and self-confidence to develop a show showcasing frozen desserts around the world.
“Even before the race, I had this idea to do a television show on ice cream and frozen dessert,” she says. “I’ve always been a person who is interested in doing something for the love, not the money.”
Does ice cream seem lightweight? Perhaps, but the “Amazing Race” contestants who slighted her team as the “Candy Girls” got their comeuppance with the duo’s come-from-behind victory in December’s final episode.

Ice cream is the perfect communication vehicle, Warren says. “Talking to 5-year-olds, or 80-year-olds, it makes their eyes light up. The science is tangible. I can break it down so people can understand.”
Her comparative advantage, aside from that easy, enthusiastic manner, rests squarely on her education at UW-Madison: the science of food, the subtle interaction between flavor, texture, and (in the case of ice cream) temperature and melting properties.
For her dissertation, Warren is exploring fat agglomeration — how fat molecules cluster together. Her work could help ice-cream makers produce low-fat ice cream with better “mouth feel” and less gum and binder.
“Most people who do food shows are chefs, not scientists,” she says. “The love for food is growing, so for me it’s a cool opportunity.”
Warren also intends to stay active in the manufacturing side of frozen desserts, as she has been doing for Babcock Hall’s Frozen Dessert Center.

“My major professor, Rich Hartel, and I study microstructure. Scott Rankin (a professor of food science) has small-scale manufacturing equipment and in-depth knowledge of the sensory aspects of frozen desserts, and Bill Klein, who manages Babcock’s dairy plant, does larger scale manufacturing,” she says. The center provides services to manufacturers to troubleshoot or create new products.
Warren grew up near St. Louis, and played soccer and basketball and ran track in school. A good student, she majored in chemistry at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. A summer internship at a food company turned her toward food science, and she came to UW-Madison to work on ice cream with Hartel.
Warren says her father, a chef; her mother, a minister; and her godparents, who helped raise her, were “super supportive. They always told me the sky isn’t the limit. There is so much more I can do. But when I said I would not be a medical doctor …” she says, trailing off. “They are so proud of all I have been able to accomplish. I am a go-getter, I’ve got to have fun, make everything a learning moment, and really be me. Family has instilled that in me.”
Warren says she and her road partner DeJong “were just there to have fun. We learned that a smile or a hug can speak volumes in a country where we could not speak the language.”

In a format that encourages rivalry, “we never put another team down,” Warren says. “Amy even gave another contestant her extra shoes, and they beat us that day.”
“Maya is a very motivated person who really likes to think outside the box,” says DeJong. “She has a lot of passions and is willing to put in the work she needs to achieve what she wants to achieve. She likes to share her passions with other people.”
DeJong says the duo decided to apply for the show without much consideration. “She started to talk about it, and I said it sounds like fun, and before we knew it, we were auditioning.”
The “Candy Girls” did, however, bring a secret weapon to the race, Warren says. “After the grueling process of getting a Ph.D., we know what it is like to be under mental strain. We know how to stay calm and succeed.”
Navigation was a key challenge, Warren says. “We got lost a lot, in Copenhagen, Morocco … On the last leg, we were driving through L.A., and knew we needed to stop and get directions. We were diligent about that. We would leave a building, and instead of getting into the car, would stop for directions. We saw the other teams just drive away, but we learned from the mistakes we made.”
In the race, as in life itself, “smartness does play a role,” Warren says.

But, it's due tasks of TAR 24 were too easy like TAR 15 compared to TAR 11 and 18.

A Million Ways to Win

Maya Warren ’07 had planned for everything. A PhD student in food sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Warren was in peak condition mentally and physically when she arrived in Times Square in May 2014 to begin a three-week around-the-world odyssey for The Amazing Race. A triathlete and marathoner, she’d honed her strength and speed with two-a-day workouts for months. Warren and her lab partner, Amy DeJong, who was also her teammate on Race, analyzed all 24 seasons of the popular reality show to suss out the secrets of winning teams. And the fact that they won—besting 10 other teams while traveling 26,000 miles through nine countries—well, that was just step one on a much larger journey for Warren.
Maya Warren ’07Warren learned how to swim as part of the “Triathlon Training” class she took with Carleton physical education professor Andy Clark. The skill proved useful for the competition—during which she had to swim in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. But that wasn’t the only benefit of the course. “Training for triathlons at Carleton was one of my first physical challenges,” says Warren. “There was value in having to get up every morning. I learned to be disciplined and motivated.”
Before Warren and DeJong’s victory, female pairs represented just 2 of the 24 winning teams in the show’s 14-year history, due to the extreme physical demands placed on the racers. Season 25 was no exception: teams had grueling cycling, surfing, and even rice-paddy-dredging challenges in countries that included Singapore and the Philippines. To improve their odds, Warren and DeJong trained for months before the show began by completing brutally hard Insanity workouts every morning. They followed up with strength training, orienteering, and basketball in the afternoons.
The two doctoral students (Warren studies ice cream and DeJong studies candy) tried to keep their secret weapon—their formidable brainpower—under wraps during the competition. “We didn’t want our intellect to be a threat,” says Warren. “We were always sort of under the radar.”
Inference is everything. Warren and DeJong studied maps and cross-referenced them with the locations visited on previous seasons of the show to determine where they might be headed. But their real insight came when the pair cleverly surmised where they wouldn’t be going: “We had to get shots, but we didn’t get a yellow fever shot,” says Warren. “So we eliminated places that required that immunization.”
When they started the application process in fall 2013, Warren was focused on acing the auditions. But after she and DeJong were selected for the show, she aimed her sights higher. “I remember talking on the phone with my godmother the day before we left for New York, and I was like, ‘I think we’re going to win this thing,’ ” she says. “I always felt that this game was ours to win.”
Though she had to keep the results a secret for months, Warren said it made the watching parties with her friends in the fall of 2014 even sweeter. “I enjoyed being able to share this with people and experiencing with them all the emotional highs and lows of us getting lost or not reading our clue properly, all the way to us finally winning The Amazing Race,” she says. “I wanted people to go on that emotional roller-coaster with us.”
Warren, who studies the microstructural behavior properties of frozen desserts, says she saw The Amazing Race not just as the achievement of a longtime dream, but also as a launching pad for a career goal that combines her love of science, sweets, and television. “I’ve always been interested in doing a show on frozen desserts around the world,” she says.
The discipline that defined her preparation and performance has also extended to her post-victory financial plans. “I’ve already invested the money,” she says. “I will probably buy myself one gift—a car—when I graduate.”

If any of you watch or have been a fan of America's Next Top Model, Maya Warren recently collaborated and consulted with Tyra Banks on creating a new ice cream brand called SMiZE Cream. They had a grand opening event for their pop-up shop in Santa Monica Place near the Santa Monica Pier a few days ago. As of today, they have a five-star rating on Google!
