Previously on TAR, 8 teams dove into Dubai, UAE! Carson & Jack claimed an underwater FF while Nick & Mike had a familiar moment from behind. But it was a dramatic foot race that led Pops & Jeff to be eliminated against them. The season's first self-drive sends teams spinning and a double U-Turn will have a massive impact coming up.

Carson & Jack depart 1st at 12:34 P.M. Fly to Sofia, Bulgaria!

Han & Holden depart 2nd at 1:16 P.M. They want to keep the momentum going. Alyssa & Josiah leave 3rd 3 minutes behind H&H. The couple plan to pay down their debts. Josiah thought the name sounded familiar to him and realized it sounded like "Sofia Vergara".

Brett & Mark and Jon & Ana leave in 4th and 5th. Melinda & Erika leaving in 6th. Erika is shocked they are driving and are worried. Nick & Mike depart last in their taxi and are grateful to have survived the prior leg.

Everyone is at the airport now. All on the same flight. "Strategy is to make as little mistakes as possible. We're gunning for first." - Nick & Mike.

Drive to the square of Negushevo to pick up the next clue. All teams driving out and following each other out with Carson & Jack out of the structure first. Brett & Mark are struggling with stick and Han & Holden try passing to no wiggle room or avail. And... we have our first accident of the season! Jon & Ana showing Han & Holden how to get the stick in gear.

Jon & Ana arrive at the square. Alyssa & Josiah behind them.

ROUTE INFO: Kukeri! Teams need to gather apples as an offering and deliver them to the leader of the kukeri to receive their next clue.

In Haystack, one team member must find a magnitsa. In Woodstack, one team must use a wheelbarrow and backpack to transport 200 kg of firewood to a specific address.

Alyssa & Josiah are behind them immediately and choose the hay. Han & Holden are 4th at the apples and are slowly hauling. Carson & Jack are trying a different highway and Jack says this is a complete disaster.

Melinda & Erika are also shown finishing the kukeri apple offering in 5th behind H&H. Carson & Jack are in jeopardy.

Brett & Mark arrive at the library and choose the woodstacks. Nick & Mike arrive at the apples and see some goats on the way to deliver their apples.

Jon & Ana are trying to find the marked parking at the Detour and see a couple arrows. They get to the haystacks. Jon says those stacks are taller than him. They have to sift through to find the magnitsa in one of three haystacks in their designated area.

Brett & Mark don't know how to convert kilos to pounds as they arrive at the woodstack Detour. They remind everyone of the Lena & Kristy moment and say the hay is itchy. :funny:

Josiah feels like a bomb-sniffing dog as Jon & Ana switch to another stack.

Mom and daughter are there and place New York's face on the board as Nick & Mike come in to a sleight of hand from them. Nick & Mike don't understand why they did that, but Mel & Erika didn't know there were multiple clues in the box. Nick & Mike then U-Turn H&H to deflect and tell them on the way back.

Carson & Jack are lost still and making little progress as Mark milks the right amount of sheep's milk. He has to eat all of the yummy yogurt on the hill with this old woman. Like a Chobani commercial. Vegas is off to the Pit Stop.

Nick & Mike are feeling like they pulled down the magnitsa as they were tearing the mounds apart and now have to sift through all of it again. Holden finds the magnitsa in the moment and depart in 5th, beating New York's U-Turn.

"I don't know how much half a liter is." - Mel. Erika hopes Nick & Mike are doing well and hope they end up surviving the twist as they like them as people, regretting their decision. (No, don't regret that decision.)

Carson & Jack making slow and steady progress. Carson motivates Jack and wants to push it to their limit to win the million.

Couldn't ask for a better introduction to Bulgaria. The leg design was solid and the teams provided lots of dramatic moments. I'd also like to shout out the camera crew and editors: the cinematography in this episode was as good as ever.

It's been a long time since we've last seen a team not even get to the first ARI until over half the episode has already elapsed, and I can't imagine the chances of staying out of last place in that circumstance are very high. It was Carson & Jack's lateness that helped make the U-Turn work so well as a Race device here: teams felt forced into using it as a survival strategy. This engendered the classic two-way race for last place, which was turned on its head when the two teams actually in last place discovered each other on either edge of the Detour field. The fluid storylines, plus the tasks and car drama, provided no shortage of those classic cut-to-commercial moments diehard viewers have come to love.

Crazy how the last two eliminations have hung in the balance of one missed train car and one missed kilogram of wood. The race can often teeter on the head of a pin, which is, I suppose, one of the reasons we all keep watching this show season after season.

Post by: Xoruz on April 18, 2025, 03:29:46 PM: Give TAR a haystack, and they'll create an iconic episode. There's so much to love from a new country, to the self-drive, to the U-Turn drama. I don't think anyone could have predicted this U-Turn scenario. When the hay appeared, even some of the teams seemed to flash back to Lena & Kristy. What's ironic is that the hay search was easier than the wood for the most part. It's crazy how many little things had to go wrong for Nick & Mike like missing a kilo of wood and the vigorous search of the hay. Not even Carson & Jack getting lost for hours could help them. The editing and filming were also great like the sick drone shots of the field and the just out of it farmer. Quite a few people said that it felt like classic TAR, and it did in all the best ways.
