ASK AUSIELLO

Question: Any scoop on tonight's Lost finale? You left us high and dry last week!  — Christine

Ausiello: My sincerest apologies. But rest assured, when I'm not dispending Lost dish, I'm chasing it down. At ABC's upfront bash last week, I cornered Carlton Cuse and politely demanded that he cough up "The Challah" at once. "It launches what we are going to be doing in Season 3," he said of the top-secret cliff-hanger, "and I think it will give the audience a good idea where the show will be going next season. This season was really about the hatch, and when you see 'The Challah,' it'll really give you a sense of what the next chapter of the show is all about." For more scoop de Cuse, keep reading

Question: What are the chances that Ana Lucia will appear in other castaways' flashbacks next season on Lost?  — Monica Nettle

Ausiello: Slim to none, according to Carlton. "Never say never, but we feel like we told her story," he reveals. "Her arc had a beginning, middle and an end." Sort of like Michelle Rodriguez's rap sheet, minus the end part.

Question: Will we ever find out the fate of Cindy the Disappearing Flight Attendant on Lost?  — Toni Miller

Ausiello: I asked Carlton that as well. "Yes," he says, "you will find out what happened to Cindy."

Question: I love Lost, though this minor thing has been bugging me for some time. In the episode "Homecoming," Claire returns with no recollection of anything on the island. In "Maternity Leave," she recalls her encounters with Ethan but nothing involving the time before that. Will more of her memory come back to her or will she forever forget the pre-Ethan stuff?  — Harold

Ausiello: Although this wasn't made crystal clear on the show, Claire has regained all of her memories. "It came back in bits and pieces," Carlton explains. "But, obviously, the most stressful stuff — the stuff related to when she was in the medical hatch — came back last."

the timer counts down and the electromagnet IS what brought down the plane on Sept 22, 2004. Mike gets Walt back and is told to take the boat and follow some heading to be rescued. Henry is HIM.

Desmond was in love with Widmore's daughter but he wasn't good enough and Widmore tried to buy him off. He later ends up in prison and once he's out he's determined to hurt or beat Widmore by winning the Sail around the world thing. He meets Elizabeth (libby) at a coffee shop type place and they get chatting he needs a boat and it so happens that her late husband left her a boat.

INSIDERSCOOP Spoiler why the plane crashed

There seems to be a bit of doubt by many of you as to why the plane crashed. Desmond crashed on the island after a big storm we will be shown this tonight. He is picked up by a man in a biohazard suit (Kelvin) and brought to the hatch. After three years together Kelvin says goodbye instead of see you in two hours which makes Desmond suspicious. Desmond then notices a gapping whole in the back leg of the biohazard suit.

Desmond follows Kelvin. Once outside Kelvin takes off the suit and starts to walk somewhere. Desmond of course follows once near some jagged rocks around a bend he sees his boat and Kelvin pops up behind him. He said I used to be a spook I know when someone is following me. Then some dialogue about the button. Kelvin has fixed Desmond’s boat and was planning to leave. They start to struggle and push each other around. Kelvin is knocked down and his head is smacked against some rocks. He dies a little too easily in my opinion.

Desmond realizes what he has done and rips off a key on a chain from Kelvin’s neck. He hurries back to the hatch. When he gets back alarms are blaring and the words SYSTEM FAILURE are being displayed and repeated on the computer screen and by the loud speaker.

Everything that is metallic is flying across the room everything is shaking. He uses the key to override the hieroglyphics and the timer resumes to 108.

When Locke is explaining the Pearl hatch to Desmond he shows him the computer printout. The printout displays the numbers and says accepted next to each entry it also has the date on it.

Desmond asked Locke when they crashed and next to the Date 09222004 Sept. 22 2004 it says System Failure. This is their explanation for how the plane crashed if it’s not what you want I’m sorry but I didn’t make it up. Hope this satisfies some of you.

Then Jack says "they allready have been warned tell them MIKE"

I am so upset at my TV station! There was some severe weather last night and the entire three hours the screen was moved over. 1/4 of the screen from the left was dedicated to weather updates. THE ENTIRE TIME. They had a radar and county warnings. I don't think I heard any rain at all! Not one bit. Sure the power went out for a second, but that was it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr I want a nice clean copy. They better rerun the show!

I think for the most part, the spoilers were wrong. Supposed at the end Michael finds Walt in a building wtih some other children. Also, four large pillars rise out of the ground when the button is not pressed, enveloping a 'shield' around the island and trapping Michael and Walt on the outside. Also spoilers said that Sayid gets shot. What else Puddin? Also, supposed all of humanity is gone.

Hey I didnt write the spoilers , just passed on what I read . Of course there are going to be fake spoilers put out there to throw us off . It didn't matter to me , once the show started I didn't even pay attention to what was spoiled , only thing I noted really was that Sayid wasn't shot in the chest so thats a good thing in my eyes anyway ;) .
Now what happened in the hatch ? Charlie appeared as if nothing had happened when asked where Ecko & Locke were he replied something like " their not back yet ?" *shrug*  Whats up with that ? It's as if he lost memory of what was going on .
I was happy that Claire finally gave Charlie the time of day , a kiss as well as caring for him . almost made me think he will be the leader for awhile untill the big deals come back , whatever .
So Hurley was only wanted because " you can't tell the fat guy anything " or something like that , the others know he has a big mouth so they used him for their mouth .
Also I don't thik Michael & Walt make it far , would the compass on the boat work ? what about the magnet field ? and why give W/M a perfecty good boat to escape ?
Yeah I'm jumping all over the place ..
So Desmond died ? maybe not who knows but he turned the key and now the magnet is gone or at least the power of the magnet is not what it was ?
Did it break the shield of the island long enough for Penny's trackers to find the island ? Why does Penny want to find the island ? to find Desmond ? a little extreme don't ya think ? Was there a tracking device on the sailboat? We know shes a Widmore .......ok I'm just talking out loud , theres just so much more that I was thinking about .. more later if anyone cares .

and they know it would take him along time to walk back to camp giving them more time to do whatever it is they are going to do to Kate/Jack/Sawyer . If they wanted K/J/S so bad why go through all this extreme ? they had plenty of opportunities to take them ?
anyway we stilll have a small army of Jin & Sayid out there and don't forget Danielle is somewhere and Alexis whatever her name is might be of help to J/K/S too .
Walt has to come back , isn't he the one with the gift ? maybe the answers ? or did they take something from him or make another Walt when they took Micheals blood ?

Yeah too many questions  ..whats up with the big foot with 4 toes ? my bf says Atlantis .
I watched last nights EP twice and will probably watch it again later ..

Finally got to watch the episode this morning after work.
Alot of questions and some answers. The stone foot
was one of the things I was trying to figure out myself,
the first thing that came to my mind was Atlantis as well.

Maybe Widmore has something to do with the island and the
others are "good guys" after all. Penny was looking for Desmond
because she still loves him or she found his letters.

Did anyone catch what the whispers were saying? I'll have to
rewatch it an listen harder this time.

We learn that "Mr. Friendly's" name is Tom.

One other thing that bugs me is the hatch door, if the magnet
is somewhere on the island then why was the hatch door falling
from the sky? I can only come up with 2 reasons.

1. The magnet in the sky or...
2. There's a hatch in the sky over looking the island
and the magnet on the island ripped its door off. ???

I'll have to watch it again...

P.S. Libby's husband was Dave or so she says, Dave is hurley's
imaginary friend from the nut house where libby was staying as well.
The tribe has spoken....

Has anyone ever thoght that maybe Mr. Rork is running the island? Perhaps this is Locke's fantasy? After season three it'll all be over and time to go home.

Next Season's Lost Sneaked

Producers of ABC's hit series Lost, which aired its surprising second-season finale on May 24, told SCI FI Wire that it sets up the upcoming third season, which will focus more on romance—and on the mysterious Others. "The Others are an important part of season three, and there's a lot of mysteries and a lot of questions about the Others that the audience is going to be curious about going into season three," said executive producer Carlton Cuse in an interview. "And those are the things we're going to explore."

Cuse added: "There will definitely be some new characters on the show next year. ... Obviously, Michael Emerson, who plays Henry Gale, he's someone who's going to be very prominent in the show next year." Fans were also introduced to a new character who promises to figure in next season's storylines: Penelope Widmore, played by Sonya Walger.

In the finale, viewers find out where Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) was, what happens when the button doesn't get pushed, why the plane crashed and the fate of Michael (Harold Perrineau) and Walt (Malcolm David Kelley). At the end, Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) are prisoners of the Others. And Claire (Emilie de Ravin) gives Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) a kiss.

"I'm excited about love in season three," said executive producer Bryan Burk, adding: "Don't forget now the people have been on the island for 60-plus days. They're now obviously more familiar with each other. ... The concept of love [is there], and ... it weaves its way through all of our characters. It's going to be much more prevalent in season three."

Now that Lost has finished shooting, the season-three writers met recently for a "boot camp" in Hawaii, where they broke the main story arcs for next year. "It's fun, because we're still kind of following on a macro level the same trajectory that we talked about years ago," Burk said. "The details are changing on this, and new characters that we hadn't thought about are here, ... but what's fun is kind of the whole big journey is still kind of where we had originally talked about it. And it feels as I had always said from day one, when I was doing interviews in season one, I kept saying that the show doesn't really start kicking in for me until seasons two and three. ... Somebody smarter than me recently said in a TV Guide letter, ... 'If you think you're still watching a show about people who crashed on an island, you're watching another show.' There's a lot going on, and as we move forward, ... we're getting deeper into the center of the onion." —Patrick Lee, News Editor

Dickens, Challah and That Mysterious Island
By KATE AURTHUR
On last night's "Lost," which closed the island mystery's second season on ABC, a crucial plot development hinged on a copy of the Charles Dickens novel "Our Mutual Friend." (Readers who do not wish to know the particulars of the finale should stop here.)

In a flashback Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick), the character "Lost" viewers know as the man who lived down the hatch, tells a prison guard that he carries around "Our Mutual Friend" because he means for it to be the last book he reads before dying. Later, on the island, when Desmond thinks that death is near, he finds a letter inside the book from the love of his life, Penny. Her letter inspires him to go on an apparent suicide mission to save the island and, the episode implied, possibly the world.

During a visit to New York City last week, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, the executive producers who run "Lost," said they got the idea of the deathbed reading of "Our Mutual Friend" from an interview with the writer John Irving in which he said he was saving it for last. But besides paying tribute to Mr. Irving, they were eager to refer to Dickens for their own narrative purposes.

"He was writing chapter by chapter for newspapers," Mr. Cuse said. "We often think: 'How much did Dickens know when he was writing his stories? How much of it was planned out, and how much was flying by the seat of his pants because he had to get another chapter in?' " He paused, then said with a laugh, "We can respect what he went through."

More remarkable than the size of "Lost's" audience, which averages 15.3 million viewers, is its devotion. The show has inspired endless Internet chatter and solicits participation by viewers, who play its popular multiplatorm game, the Lost Experience. When Mr. Cuse and Mr. Lindelof began the writing process for this year's closing episode, they knew that a large number of fervent fans were bitterly disappointed in the Season 1 finale. The big twist in that episode was the kidnapping of 10-year-old Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) by the island's sinister inhabitants, known as the Others, who lived there before the plane crash that began the show. The writers had worked hard to keep Walt's abduction a secret from Internet spoiler sites, nicknaming the scene "the bagel" so as not to let its contents casually slip. (This year's shocker was dubbed "the challah.")

That genuinely surprising turn did not end the Season 1 finale however. Instead, in its final moments, the mystical Locke (Terry O'Quinn) and the practical Jack (Matthew Fox) stared down into a mysterious hatch Locke had found earlier in the season and had been trying to open. But fans were annoyed: what could possibly be down the hatch that would be worth a four-month wait?

When that finale was broadcast, Mr. Lindelof was in Hawaii about to be married. "We felt everybody was satisfied and psyched," he said. "It never occurred to us that the backlash was going to begin."

Mr. Cuse said: "There started to be Internet chatter. We take that feedback to heart. By the time August rolled around, the spin on it was everybody's frustrated that we didn't go into the hatch."

The Season 2 premiere tried to remedy that frustration immediately. In the hatch was Desmond, who had been stranded on the island three years earlier. There were also plentiful provisions, retro furniture and, most important, a button that needed to be pushed every 108 minutes to dispel a powerful electromagnetic charge that could lead to catastrophic consequences.

When talking about the construction of "Lost," Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse often refer to the Harry Potter books. They want each season, like each book in J. K. Rowling's series, to pose questions and answer them while at the same time maintaining a larger mystery that holds the audience. "This season's story was about the hatch," Mr. Cuse said. "We were very conscious of trying to make the end of the season more satisfying than last year. We wanted to answer a lot of questions."

Last night's episode solved two significant "Lost" puzzles, which turned out to be related. What would happen when the button wasn't pushed? (There was a huge explosion, and if Desmond had not activated a backup system, Mr. Cuse said, "It might have led to, ultimately, sucking everything on earth into itself.") And what crashed the castaways' plane? (It was a casualty of the only other instance when the button was not pushed on time.)

Because they don't know how long the show will run, Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse have to pace its revelations. "If you answer too many questions, the audience doesn't have anything to care about on the show anymore," Mr. Cuse said. "We had to end the show with a powerful mystery that suggested what the show was going to be about next year and would leave the audience curious about where we're going."

Ratings suffered as the season progressed. In response to complaints from both viewers and the show's creators, next season ABC will run the show in two uninterrupted segments, without reruns that stop its flow. But its biggest problem was the return of Fox's "American Idol" in January at the same time on Wednesday nights. Before then, original episodes of "Lost" delivered 21.5 million viewers; after, they brought in 16.5 million (and repeats fared poorly all season).

As for next season, the scene that Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse called "the challah" offered a preview. In the final minutes of last night's episode, the action on the island has ended, but in a coda that took place in unfamiliar settings, Penny, Desmond's wealthy, long-lost girlfriend, was told, "I think we found it." The implication viewers were left with was that the explosion on the island finally made it visible, at least temporarily, to someone desperately looking for it.

Will a rescue effort be a part of Season 3? Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse would not say but allowed that if this season was about the hatch, next season will be about the Others, as led by the oblique Henry Gale (played by Michael Emerson, who will join the regular cast). Mr. Cuse listed what viewers will learn about the Others by this time next year: "Who are these people? How many of them are there? What is their history? What are they trying to accomplish?"

Beyond serving as a teaser, the finale's last minutes were incredibly important to the larger story, Mr. Lindelof said, particularly since this was the first time in 49 hours of the show that "Lost" went off the island in the present, rather than in a flashback. "It's time to actually blow up several theories of the show," he said. "People who believe that they're in purgatory or that they're subjects of an experiment are going to start reassessing those theories based on the fact that we are literally showing you the outside world."

MCFARLANE TOYS GETS 'LOST'
Six Exclusive Action Figures Coming to Stores This Fall
May 23, 2006

McFarlane Toys will soon give Lost's legions of fans something new to obsess over. A series of Lost action figures is scheduled to be released late fall, 2006, and is destined to populate office cubicles around the country.

McFarlane Toys' Lost Series 1 captures six fan-favorite characters from the series' first season: Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley, Charlie and Shannon. Each 6-inch Lost figure will have a detailed base and photographic backdrop, capturing an episode-specific moment in the character's story. In addition, each package will include a detailed prop reproduction central to the character's story, enabling fans to "own" a piece of the show's mythology. For example, Kate's figure will be packaged with a reproduction of the toy airplane that plays so prominently into her backstory. More than just action figures, McFarlane's Lost figures will once again raise the bar for fans and for the industry.

We will also be releasing Lost deluxe boxed sets -- re-creating key moments between multiple characters, and small-scale dioramas -- replicating central locations such as the mysterious island and the infamous hatch.

To say that we are VERY excited about this is an understatement.

Click here for our first big reveal -- coinciding with the Lost season cliffhanger: a peek at one of the figures in the first series.

okay i was rewatching the Lost finale and noticed information that may or may not give a peak into next season:

Kate said the comment about the make-up and beard that they might be faking - could 'the others' be like the people from the movie the Village (rich but choosing to live a basic lifestyle to avoid the evils of this world) ?

Sayid - He opened the door being gaurded by the two men with guns...and it appeared to be a closet - I found that odd, anyone else?

Jack - right before the put the hood on him he nodded his head to Kate giving the impression that him and her had planned for that to happed.

thoughts?

I just took the fake hatch as just that. I missed the meaning in the nod between Kate and Jack but it was late. I guess I should rewatch it. Maybe something to do today.
