Gretchen and Meredith appreciation thread !

Graceful aging keeps 60s couple in the 'Race'
By Gary Levin, USA TODAY
She fell in a cave and bloodied her head. They were stripped of their money and possessions, save for the clothes on their backs.

The Detour challenge: Gretchen Smith,66, and her husband, Meredith, 69, buy a grocery list of goods in Santiago, Chile
CBS
But Meredith and Gretchen Smith, the oldest couple ever on The Amazing Race, also have endured far longer than the typical token team of seniors on CBS' reality hit, now in its seventh season.

"It's absolute tenacity," host Phil Keoghan says. "They just decided they were going to go all out and never give up."

Meredith, 69, a retired executive, and Gretchen, 66, a retired nurse and flight attendant, from Easton, Md., are one of five teams of the original 11 in a world race of hair-raising challenges. They're vying for a $1 million prize in the finale May 10.

  {'Amazing' nuptials

Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich, who fell in love on Survivor and returned to the network to test their teamwork on The Amazing Race, will share their wedding with the world in a CBS prime-time special May 24 (9 p.m. ET/PT).

The self-explanatory Rob and Amber Get Married extravaganza will include a behind-the-scenes look at preparations for the wedding, which took place Saturday at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. The special also will feature Amber's bridal shower, the bachelor and bachelorette parties and rehearsal dinner in addition to the ceremony and reception.}

The Smiths aren't available for interviews; CBS policy restricts access to contestants until they're ousted.

But going into tonight's ninth episode (9 ET/PT), the team has outlasted other seasons' seniors. Only Teri and Ian Pollack, considerably younger at 49 and 50, made it further, finishing third in Race's third season.

Fans are cheering. "The one thing I do admire about them is that, despite all the odds — age, mishaps, non-elimination round — they never give up," says Kyle Richard of San Francisco.

Racers Susan and Patrick Vaughn, eliminated earlier this season, say they bonded with the older couple. "They're so sincere and genuine," Patrick says. "You can look at them and see they're your grandparents. There's not a mean bone in their bodies."

Such gentle competitiveness stands in marked contrast to Survivor couple Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich. Their aggressive behavior toward other Race teams and locals makes them formidable competitors in the 31-day journey, which has gone from Long Beach, Calif., to Lucknow, India, by way of Peru, Chile, Argentina and South Africa.

"You see some people who are rude, like Rob and Amber," Patrick says. But the Smiths prove "you can still be in the race and be nice to everyone."

The strategy paid dividends when Keoghan made them cough up their cash and backpacks as a penalty for finishing last in a non-elimination episode. That came just hours after Gretchen took a nasty spill, smashing her head against a rock as she rappelled 45 feet down a cave in Soweto.

"That was the meanest thing I've ever done on TV," Keoghan says. "She's got this huge cut on her head, and I take everything."

But the Smiths pressed on, relying on a rival team for clothes and strangers for taxi money. In India, they were cheered on by throngs of autograph-seekers.

And though they struggle near the back of the pack, they endure. "It's the smarts factor, the luck factor and the karma factor," Keoghan says. And rivals who underestimate them. "A lot of people didn't even give them the time of day."

Fans continue to cheer on Villages snowbirds in 'Amazing Race'

By THERESA CAMPBELL, DAILY SUN

THE VILLAGES - Many loyal viewers of "The Amazing Race" never expected retirees and Villages snowbirds Meredith and Gretchen Smith to make it past the first episode.

But they did.

And then they survived the second episode, third, fourth and so on. Tonight will mark the eighth week Meredith-and-Gretchen fans have tuned in to watch The Villages snowbirds in the reality adventure show, and many are thrilled that the Villages snowbirds are one of the five remaining teams in the globetrotting trek for a $1 million prize.

"I'm so glad they're continuing on, and I'm so proud of them. More power to them," said Villager Cindy Dilks. "It's very exciting to watch, and it's a morale booster for us. It speaks well of the lifestyle of The Villages. Look at how many of us are doing things that we didn't have the time to do before, and Meredith and Gretchen are also showing us to 'go for it!' "

Dilks admits she agonizes with the snowbirds whenever they have to perform challenging tasks, and she fretted last week watching Gretchen as she searched through hundreds of stacked tin boxes stacked in a room in India, desperately trying to find a clue.

"I wouldn't have survived the first day," Dilks said.

How will The Villages snowbirds do tonight?

It should be interesting to watch. Last week's show ended with the cliffhanger phrase: "To be continued," which means viewers will have to tune in at 9 p.m. on CBS to see the rest of the race in India.

The Smiths were in last place throughout last week's race, so will they move up in tonight's show?

They are contractually forbidden to talk to the media about the show, but friends say they've been told tonight's show is not to be missed.

And Villages residents once again are invited to watch the show at Crazy Gringos, as the restaurant will continue its "Amazing Race Party," where fans can enjoy drink and food specials and watch the race on the restaurant's 19 television sets and big-screen TV.

The Smiths resided in Florida's Friendliest Hometown during the winter, and the snowbirds from Maryland have told friends they love the community and want to come back next winter to enjoy The Villages lifestyle.

Puddin,  Do you think it's because Phil gets emotional before he eliminates them?

}^! I woundn't put anything past those two  {l{ , theres a post at Sucks that you must read Rob and Amber are gonna be MEREDITHOWNED. (%#

Don't be fooled by these two. Meredith and Gretchen are the undisputed champions of The Amazing Race. Trust me on this. They've been putting on this guise of being the old weak dumb team that's been skating by through pure luck and perserverence, but in reality they're playing one hell of a game.

They are the ones that broke Susan and Patrick's boat and got them eliminated. They screwed up Brian and Greg's SUV which caused them to spill over and wreck. They are the ones who bribed Lynn and Alex's driver to go to the other temple. You think Rob's a mastermind? Meredith and Gretchen engineered several eliminations without even having to mention it in front of the cameras.

They are also brilliant enough to play up the "old and useless" card to keep everyone offguard. They always stay in the bottom of the pack because they know how to escape elimination. The other teams underestimate them, which means they'll be too focused on each other to notice their MEREDITHOWNAGE as M&G pass them on the final leg and win the million.

They are brilliant in throwing the other teams off. Just this last leg, Meredith put Gretchen on top of that elephant to make themselves look stupid before the other teams. But Meredith can handle pushing a huge-ass elephant with his cyborg wife brainwashing the locals into helping her. Mariano ain't got **** on their people skills. I mean, does Rob have BLEEPing ovations wherever he goes? Meredith gets asked for his BLEEPing autograph. Not even Rob has been asked for an autograph.

Then, there was the first Africa leg. They made the brilliant play of making Gretchen look like she suffered an injury to throw off the other teams. In reality, it takes more than sheer rock to scratch Gretchen. Harming Gretchen requires a substance harder than diamonds and sharper than an atom's width. Then, calculating that this would be non-elimination, they went ahead and arrived at the pit-stop last, knowing they wouldn't need money nor their possessions. They decided to steal the teams' money anyway to screw them up a bit.

Next week, Uchenna and Joyce show how brilliant they are by going to Meredith and Gretchen for help. Rob remarks about the "blind leading the blind", yet he's unaware that he's soon going to have his ass MEREDITHOWNED.

So all you Romber fans rooting about how Rob is owning this race are going to be in for a shock when you see Rob and Amber get eliminated in fourth place after Meredith and Gretchen bribe the locals they so desperately rely on to give them a wrong turn. After all, Ray and Deana wanted to take out M&G, as did Brian and Greg and Lynn and Alex.

Romber will be the next to be MEREDITHOWNED.

Villages snowbird couple now oldest to reach this stage of 'Amazing Race'

By THERESA CAMPBELL, DAILY SUN

THE VILLAGES - Villages snowbirds Meredith and Gretchen Smith continue to survive grueling challenges on "The Amazing Race," and they hold the honor of being the oldest couple to have ever made it this far on the adventure reality show.

The Smiths are now one of four teams left in the around-the-world race for a $1 million grand prize. The finale airs May 10.

During Tuesday night's pit stop in Jodhpur, India, host Phil Keoghan told the retirees they have outlasted other seniors who participated in previous seasons of the show.

"And for that, you should be very proud," Keoghan said.

The Villages snowbirds from Maryland beamed with delight and said they were pleased to be continuing in the race.

"It's absolute tenacity," host Keoghan said to USA Today about Meredith and Gretchen. "They just decided they were going to go all out and never give up."

Tuesday's episode showed the teams boarding a train to an unknown destination. At 1 a.m., a mysterious man paid a visit to each team while they were sleeping to give them their clue. The clues informed them that they would find the next route marker at the Jodhpur Train Station, almost 24 hours away.

Arriving in Jodhpur, the next clue revealed the teams were to travel one mile to the Sardar Marker and find a clock tower for their next clue on the first floor balcony. When all five teams arrived at the clock tower, they found that it was closed until 10 a.m. the next day.

The next morning, teams raced to the top of the clock tower to find their next clue, which included the second and final fast forward of the race and a detour. To win the fast forward, teams had to travel 10 1/2 miles to a Hindu temple and participate in a good-fortune ritual: Having their heads shaved. Teams would not learn that the ritual required head shaving until they arrived. Once both team members were completely bald, they could claim the fast forward.

Uchenna and Joyce headed to the fast forward with Lynn and Alex in hot pursuit, hoping to snare the prize first. The remaining three teams weighed their options at the detour, faced with a choice between Trunk and Dunk. To complete Trunk, teams had to go to Jodhpur's Old City and transport a wooden tiki elephant weighing 600 pounds a half-mile to a temple, where a priest would hand them their clue. While physically demanding, this task could be completed quickly with the help of locals.

For Dunk, teams had to travel to a neighborhood of Jodhpur famous for tie-dyed fabrics and dye white sheets. The dye color would make the next clue visible on the fabric once the sheet was untied. While not physically demanding, this task could take some time, because the clue would appear on only one sheet out of 25.

Meredith and Gretchen, as well as the other teams, chose the Trunk task.

The teams were shown struggling to navigate their elephants through the crowded streets of Jodhpur. Gretchen made the task more difficult when she hopped on top and rode the elephant while Meredith mustered all the strength he could to keep pushing the wooden elephant.

"We have a bad elephant!" Gretchen cried out to the crowd, while begging to the locals for aid as the wheels of their elephant got stuck in a rut. As Meredith and Gretchen fought to keep up, Ron and Kelly and Rob and Amber pulled their wooden elephants into the temple to earn their next clue. Opening it, the teams learned they needed to travel eight miles by auto rickshaw to the Oeora Krishi Farm for the next clue.

That clue revealed a roadblock, where one team member had to choose a camel cart and race two times around a marked course. As the teams battled it out on the camel racetrack, Uchenna and Joyce arrived at the temple, only to realize that they must shave their heads to win the fast forward. While Uchenna's already smooth head offered no problems, Joyce's was another matter altogether. Over Uchenna's insistence that she didn't need to go through with this, Joyce simply took off her bandanna and sat down, telling Uchenna, "Let's just do it. I'm not going back."

As Uchenna and Joyce hurried off in hopes of a first-place finish, Kelly finished her second lap in the camel cart to complete the roadblock with Amber close behind.

Frustrated, Meredith remained on the course with a stubborn camel, and found himself in last place.

After finishing, Meredith shouted for Gretchen to join him, prompting her to respond, "For God sakes, we've never acted like this with each other."

With all five teams en route to Jaswant Thada, the pit stop for this leg of the race, the margin of error was razor-thin in the race to avoid elimination.

Ron and Kelly literally climbed over rocks to finish moments ahead of Rob and Amber, with only Meredith and Gretchen and Lynn and Alex remaining to check in with Phil. In the end, going to the wrong palace proved too costly for Lynn and Alex, allowing Meredith and Gretchen to survive once more.

The Villages snowbirds finished in fourth place, while Lynn and Alex were eliminated.

What will happen next? Viewers can tune in 9 p.m. on Tuesday on CBS as "The Amazing Race" continues, and Meredith-and-Gretchen fans will have another week to cheer for the celebrity Villages snowbirds.

Aww you know I have a problem with this ..I saw it posted at Sucks and it just feels like an invasion of privacy ( everyone picking it apart )..I'm sure Gretchen did now that the world would see this or she probably would not have shared with Meredith's buddies or maybe she is not even aware that they post her private newsletter at that site , I hope that my link was not the cause of this   :':') .

Villages snowbirds finish second in ninth episode of 'The Amazing Race'

By THERESA CAMPBELL, DAILY SUN

THE VILLAGES - Way to go, Meredith and Gretchen Smith!

The Villages snowbirds were all smiles finishing in second place (beating Rob and Amber) during Tuesday's leg of "The Amazing Race" in Istanbul, Turkey. It was the retirees' best finish yet, and now the elated pair will advance to the 10th episode, airing at 9 p.m. Tuesday on CBS, with the finale on May 10.

Gretchen, 66, shined during Tuesday's show. In a roadblock challenge, she had to climb a shaky, 25-foot rope ladder to the top of a tower of an ancient European fortress.

"Just say a prayer," she said to her husband. Dangling on the ladder, Gretchen quickly realized that the task was far more difficult than she had imagined. Yet she made it, then had to rappel back down to unlock the next clue.

"Oh, my God ... Whew! Yay!" Gretchen said laughing, while rappelling down.

And back in The Villages, the moment was greeted with cheers from the local crowd watching the TV show at Crazy Gringos.

The crowd was thrilled once more when host Phil Keoghan congratulated the Villages snowbirds with the words: "Meredith and Gretchen, you are team No. 2; you're still in 'The Amazing Race.' "

"Oh, we are so proud of ourselves, we really are," Gretchen said with a wide smile. "We've been hanging by our nails, often because of mistakes made by other teams, but this time we made it on our own power and that feels great."

In video interviews on "The Amazing Race" Web site, the Smiths are shown hugging one another as they share more thoughts about the race and answer Keoghan's questions about their determination.

Meredith praised Gretchen for accomplishing the roadblock challenge of climbing the fortress for their team. She was the only female to perform the challenge.

"She's a tough lady. I had no doubt that she would do it," Meredith said.

"I had to rest between each one, to get a little more strength in my upper arms to pull me up, and then I developed a technique, but it wasn't easy, I tell ya," Gretchen said.

Keoghan asked the pair: "Meredith, there is a lot of people getting older in life, and they use that as an excuse for not doing things, saying, 'I can't do that because I'm too old and I can't do these things.' What do you say to those people who are sitting at home watching this achievement and saying, 'I can't do that because I'm too old.' What do you say to them?

"I'd say, 'Think about it some more,' " Meredith said. "You've got to keep on keeping on or it's a downward spiral. You just keep pushing on life and life will reward you. As soon as you start taking it easy, you're on your way out. You've got to push yourself all of the time, because your body will take the easy way out every time. It's a mental game."

Keoghan also questioned the Smiths about what has kept them in the race.

"We're standing here because we have a lot of love for each other," Meredith said. "Every night before we go to bed, we talk about it and we encourage each other, and we just take one leg at a time, one leg at a time."

The Smiths told Keoghan they love the feeling of elation at finishing a race.

"To feel this kind of high, that's pretty addictive," Meredith said.

Tuesday's race began with Uchenna and Joyce, along with Meredith and Gretchen, outsmarting Rob in the Jodhpur Airport, allowing the two teams to have a two-hour advantage as they made their way to Istanbul, Turkey.

Joyce commented on teaming up with the retirees by saying: "Uchenna and I are working with Gretchen and Meredith because they are truly good people, so you really want to help them. But at the end of the day, they're still our competition."

After the first two teams already had left, Rob and Amber and Ron and Kelly thought they were ahead because they didn't see the others. Believing they had the lead, Rob quipped, "Uchenna and Joyce, they don't know who to turn to. They're asking Meredith and Gretchen for advice now. It's like the blind leading the blind."

Landing in Istanbul, Uchenna and Joyce and Meredith and Gretchen boarded the train to the port, followed by a ferry to Kiz Kulesi, where they had to climb to the top of the island's tower to find their next clue. Opening it, they learned they had to search the island for one of four gnomes, each with a different marking on the bottom. Teams didn't know that the team that carried the gnome with the airplane marking on the bottom all the way to the pit stop would earn a special prize for this leg.

Next, the teams traveled 12 miles to Galata Kulesi Tower to find a detour. This detour offered teams the choice between Columns and Kilos. To complete Columns, teams had to travel two miles to Binbirdirek Cistern, an ancient well held up by 224 columns, each displaying a number. Teams must use a unique grid with coordinates directing them to four specific columns. Next, teams must pull a box from the well and, using the four numbers from their columns, figure out the correct combination to unlock their next clue. For Kilos, teams were to travel to a town square and take part in a common practice on the streets of Istanbul: Weighing people. Once they have weighed enough people to accumulate a total weight of 2,500 kilograms, or 5,500 pounds, they would get their next clue.

The Smiths chose Kilos.

"My strategy was to get big people on that scale," Gretchen said in the Web site interview. "Unfortunately, we are not in America. I probably could have accomplished that with five people in the United States, but here in Turkey, there are not that many heavy people."

Yet they accomplished the task quickly.

The next clue revealed that they had to travel 10 miles to the 550-year-old European fortress, Rumeli Hisari.

Just as Meredith and Gretchen were off, Rob and Amber were arriving in a water taxi to Kiz Kulesi and they learned from the boat driver that two teams had come earlier. Rob was stunned.

"Unbelievable," he said.

Arriving at Rumeli Hisari in first place, Uchenna and Joyce learned that one team member would have to climb the ancient fortress, and Uchenna performed the challenge, followed by Gretchen for her team.

Once completing it, the next clue led the teams to the pit stop within the fortress wall.

Uchenna and Joyce came in first, followed by the Smiths. Rob and Amber were third, while Ron and Kelly were in last place, and they heard from Keoghan that this leg of the race was a non-elimination round. Yet they had to surrender their money and belongings for the rest of the race, and the pair also learned they had won the travel award, marked on the bottom of their gnome.

And while The Villages snowbirds were thrilled by their strong finish in this leg of the race, Rob appeared miffed at coming in third.

How will Meredith and Gretchen do next week? Fans will have to tune in to see, as the race for the $1 million prize continues.

'Amazing' couple using wit and wisdom of their years to out-race their youthful competitors.

Gretchen and Meredith Smith on "The Amazing Race"

Originally published May 3, 2005
EASTON - Retirees Meredith and Gretchen Smith have gobbled 4 pounds of cow parts, scaled castles and survived head wounds on the current season of The Amazing Race - surprising fans and competitors alike by remaining in the game with just two more episodes to go.

But they have not surprised their neighbors in this Eastern Shore town, where the Smiths are known as two tough cookies. Neighbor Judy Hines likes to tell about the time she was golfing with Gretchen, who is 66, and their cart got stuck in the mud.

"Gretchen pushed us out all by herself," Hines says. "She has a tremendous amount of energy. She's a go-getter. She's a strong lady."

Easton is abuzz as the Smiths find themselves near the top of the heap on The Amazing Race, a CBS show that pits 11 teams in a grueling around-the-world race. Just four teams remain to compete in tonight's episode, and next week's finale will reveal who wins the $1 million prize.

But they have already won millions of fans for their grace and humor. They help their competitors, laugh at their own mistakes and don't physically or verbally abuse each other when things go wrong.

In other words, they're like nothing else on reality TV.

"Somehow they've managed to stay in it, overcome the odds, and all credit to them because they have a special bond with each other," Phil Keoghan, the show's host, said in an interview. "They're out there with these young teams who are duking it out, and they have just held on."

Meredith, 69, a retired executive, and his wife, Gretchen, a former flight attendant, are the oldest team to make it this far on The Amazing Race, in its seventh season and scoring higher ratings than ever before. The race has taken them from South America to Africa to India.

"We want this," Meredith said in a recent episode. (The couple can't talk to the press until they win or are eliminated.) "We want it for a lot of reasons other teams don't."

"We want it for our pride," Gretchen added.

"We want it for our kids and for all of our friends, and we want it for ourselves," Meredith said.

Already, they have outlasted a pair of buff brothers from Santa Monica, Calif., a pair of blond beauties from Oak Park, Calif., and a stockbroker and his girlfriend from Ohio. The stockbroker, Ray, said on one episode, "I'm not losing to a 70-year-old man and his wife - as nice as they are - even if it's at checkers."

Then he did exactly that.

Back home, neighbors are closely following the Smiths' improbable journey. At the YMCA where Meredith gives swimming lessons, reports from the local paper on the team's progress are posted on a bulletin board. The couple's neighbors gather weekly for viewing parties, where they cheer on their friends and boo the competitors. Gretchen and Meredith sometimes join them and, during commercial breaks, fill them in on what really happened.

"I get home from those parties and I don't sleep at night," said Bonnie Lambertson, 63, who lives two doors down from Meredith and Gretchen. "We're all wound up and excited about it. Everybody's so proud of them because they've gone and done this. It's incredible."

Lambertson exercises with Gretchen most mornings at Slim and Tone in Easton, and she pronounces her neighbor in excellent shape. They use weight machines as well as stationary bicycles and elliptical trainers. Meredith, meanwhile, is a seven-time National Masters championship swimmer and in pretty good shape himself.

"I really feel like Meredith is the backbone of that team. He's a strong man," said Alex Ali of Hollywood, Calif., who was on the show with his boyfriend and who helped the Easton couple out of some jams. "When they didn't fall off early, it scared everybody. The only thing people could do was comment on their age, which seemed more and more irrelevant with each leg of the race."

Ali said he knew the couple would go far after Gretchen hit her head on a rock while rappelling into a cave - a wound that required seven stitches - and then kept on racing. She refused to go to a hospital until finishing that leg of the race.

Ali's favorite memories from the race are of sitting in airport lounges or on trains, joking and laughing with Gretchen and Meredith. After the couple had all their belongings stripped from them in one episode, Gretchen said, "All I could have is tampons, and I don't need them anymore."

Meredith and Gretchen, both on their second marriage, have five children between them. The children encouraged their parents to go on the show - even printing out the application for them - and say it's been thrilling and a little worrisome to see them on TV. Gretchen's 36-year-old son, Chris Meadows, said it was tough watching his mom get hurt.

"When I saw the preview for that show and saw her face covered in blood, I was like Oh my gosh!" he said in a phone interview from Lawrenceville, Ga. "She didn't tell us about that."

He added, "Everything they've done has impressed me. They went for six weeks straight doing this. People don't see the fact that they're starving and don't have money and are worn out. But where one is weak, the other is strong, and they support each other. They don't scream and they don't yell. They deal with whatever comes up. And they always seem to come through."

Meredith and Gretchen can be maddeningly slow. They sometimes have trouble finding the clue boxes along the route, and they can't sprint like their competitors. At one point, when Gretchen was struggling to find a clue hidden in hundreds of boxes, she took a break to hug her husband.

"You can do it, honey," Meredith told her. And she did.

That's nothing like the Amazing Race contestant last season who shoved his wife for not keeping up with him or the one this season who constantly belittled his girlfriend. But Meredith and Gretchen's success is showing not only that nice guys can finish first but that older nice guys can do pretty well, too.

"People love knowing that they're there because they deserve to be there," Keoghan, the host, said. "They competed on an equal playing field with a lot of other teams who may have written them off in the beginning. And to me, it's very positive to see them there because they are a living example to others that age, while it is part of the challenge of doing things, is not something that is stopping people from doing things."

Meredith and Gretchen seem determined to make that point, on the show and off. They already have a wedding gift in mind for that stockbroker from Ohio, Ray, who said he could beat them at anything and who will soon be marrying his girlfriend, Deana.

They plan to send him a board of checkers, according to their neighbor, Ron Lambertson. And they plan to attach this note: "We'll play you anytime."

Villages snowbirds eliminated one leg short of the final 3 in 'Amazing Race'

By THERESA CAMPBELL, DAILY SUN

THE VILLAGES - Villages snowbirds Meredith and Gretchen Smith can smile with pride knowing they had a great ride on "The Amazing Race," where they persevered through 11 legs of the race and ended their impressive run just short of the final three.

They did better than anyone ever expected of the retirees, and they made history as the oldest couple to advance so far in the CBS-TV adventure reality show.

Next week's two-hour episode, airing at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, will be the finale.

As the Smiths stepped on the mat in last place in London during Tuesday's show, Meredith, 69, and Gretchen, 66, flashed wide smiles and said they were happy with their finish.

"It was a great ride," Meredith said.

"We lasted much longer than we ever dreamed that we could," Gretchen said.

Meredith glanced over at his wife and marveled at her stamina and determination throughout the globetrotting trek that began March 1 with 11 teams.

"I have said over and over again that this is an amazing woman. She's the love of my life and my soulmate. I'm very proud of her and I think she's the most beautiful woman in the world."

Host Phil Keoghan praised the Smiths and told The Villages snowbirds that they were an inspiration.

"We are so happy we came this far. All the things we've been able to do and friendships that we've made, it's just been a totally incredible experience for the two of us," Gretchen said.

The Smiths were in New York City on Wednesday to do TV and radio interviews about the show, beginning with a chat on "The Early Show" with Harry Smith, who announced the couple had been "Amazing Race" fans' favorite couple.

"You have made it farther by far than anybody in your age group," Smith said, before asking them about Tuesday night's challenges and their thoughts on the Rob and Amber factor.

"There is always the Rob and Amber factor. We had it throughout the race," Gretchen said.

"What was the feeling by the rest of the contestants about them?" the CBS anchor asked the couple.

"I think they were somewhat disappointed, and that the playing field wasn't level," Meredith said.

Harry Smith replayed an earlier clip of the show when the Villages snowbirds had lost all of their money and possessions and sought help from fellow contestants.

Rob declined to help, while other contestants gave Meredith and Gretchen a few dollars.

"I'm not giving them money. They are the biggest con artists going," Rob said. "They want people to feel bad for them."

"And when you heard that, you thought ... ?" Harry Smith asked.

"Oh, golly," Meredith replied.

"He would have punched his lights out if he had said that to us directly," Gretchen said, causing Harry Smith to chuckle. "How could he have possibly called Meredith ... "

"I think some people attribute their own personality to others," Meredith said, chiming in.

The pair concluded that they had a great time during the race and the Smiths shared even more thoughts on "The Amazing Race" Web site.

"This was an opportunity for the two of us to understand that we could 'talk the talk' but that 'walking the talk' is entirely a different thing," Meredith said. "It's easier to sit in your armchair and say, 'I could do that better' ... Why did they do that?' That's the easy part. The hard part is being right in the middle of things and experiencing it yourself. There is a lot more going on here than what you see on television."

Meredith and Gretchen loved watching previous seasons of the show and were thrilled to be selected from more than 25,000 applications to be on the show.

" 'The Amazing Race' was a culmination of a dream the two of us had, to have a great adventure together, to work as a team, and to experience the many wonders that we experienced during these past several weeks," Gretchen said. "We are just delighted as to what we have seen, the places that we have been, and I don't think that there has been another team on the show that has fully appreciated every little thing that has happened like we have. We've just lived in wonder of all the sights that we've seen, all of the things that we've been able to do, the friendships that we've made, and it just has been a totally incredible experience for the two of us, and I almost get teary talking about it because it really has been a very special time."

Host Phil Keoghan asked the couple if the race brought them closer together.

"I really can't say that this has brought us closer together, because I think we've always been very close," Gretchen said on the race's Web site. "But this has been one of the most wonderful adventures that we can always talk about and share and enjoy, and it's what we really wanted to do together and we did, and it helped us trust each other and love each other more."

Keoghan asked Meredith to share a moment of the race that he never will forget.

"The time Gretchen fell (in the cave), and it scared me to death," he said. "I remember how my heart jumped out of my chest and how I ran to her, and I don't think she knew for sure what had happened to her at the time. I asked her how she was doing and she said, 'Never mind me. Find the damn clue!' That probably typifies the spirit and indomitable courage that this woman has."

Gretchen also had words of praise about her teammate.

"When I have been at my lowest ebb, often in the race when I thought we were coming in last, or when I had my accident, he kept being so supportive and encouraged me to keep moving on," she said.

Keoghan marveled, once more, about the Smiths being part of "Amazing Race" history.

"You are the oldest team that has ever come this far, and probably a lot of people thought, 'They are the older couple. They are not going to get very far,' " Keoghan said.

The Smiths even admit they were amazed how far they advanced. Their initial wish was not to be the first team eliminated.

Gretchen said she was proud of how she and Meredith persevered after being stripped of their possessions during the non-elimination leg, where they came in last, and everything was removed except their passports and the clothes on their backs.

When Ron and Kelly recently lost their possessions during a non-elimination leg of the race, Meredith was shown Tuesday night giving the pair money to help them get by.

"Ron and Kelly were very good to us when we were stripped of all of our possessions, and I wanted to reciprocate," Meredith said.

Gretchen summed up her thoughts of their performance in the race.

"A lot of times we capitalized on other people's mistakes and we were still hanging on by our fingernails," she said. "And there were many times when we got there on our own just by doing the right thing. We're delighted. We have no sad feelings about anything and we're so happy that we came this far, and to get to see beautiful England."

Meredith agreed.

"We've given it our best shot," Gretchen added. "We made it farther than anybody else our age and we're proud of ourselves. Aren't we?"

"I'm particularly proud of you," Meredith said to his wife. "You really hung in there."

They both did.

NEW YORK -- The oldest couple on The Amazing Race has been eliminated, leaving the final three teams to scamper across the finish line.

Retired couple Meredith and Gretchen Smith surprised many viewers with their amazing staying power, making it farther than any older couple to compete on the reality show.

"We never gave a thought to our age or our physical circumstances, all we wanted to do was beat out at least one team on every leg (of the race)," Meredith said Wednesday. "That's all we focused on."

Meredith -- and Amazing Race editors -- didn't focus on the severe pain the 69-year-old retired executive experienced in his foot after being run over by an elephant statue on wheels during a challenge in India.

"It was bothering him a lot for the rest of the race," said Gretchen. "When he got home, he had it X-rayed and found he had three partially healed bones and that's what had been broken."

Gretchen, 66, had her own bout with pain after falling in a cave in Africa, which resulted in a bloody gash. Later, the Smiths were the last team to arrive during a non-elimination leg, a situation that required host Phil Keoghan to strip the Smiths of their money and possessions.

"Uchenna (Agu) and Kelly (McCorkle) were the two people who came to our room in the middle of the night and gave us clothes," said Meredith. "We had no clothes other than those on our back, as you saw. As an interesting side note, Gretchen was wearing Uchenna's underwear."

"Yes, 'cause I didn't have any others," said Gretchen.

In case you were wondering: they were boxers.

During the May 10 finale (Tuesday at 9 p.m., CBS, check local listings), either Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich, Ron Young and Kelly McCorkle or Joyce and Uchenna Agu will cross the finish line and win the $1-million US prize.

The Smiths said they never really cared about the money. Gretchen said they just wanted "one big last adventure."

Amazing Race's Bold Oldsters Sound Off

Amazing Race's Bold Oldsters Sound Off
by Ethan Alter

Despite being written off by their rivals early on, The Amazing Race's sexagenarians, Meredith and Gretchen Smith, wound up doing pretty well for themselves on the globe-trotting series (Tuesdays, 9pm/ET on CBS). The retired couple finished the race in fourth place, which makes them the oldest team ever to reach the final four. "I told Gretchen that we've struck a blow for snowheads everywhere," Meredith happily tells TVGuide.com. In addition to enjoying their newfound fame, the Smiths are also celebrating the birth of their first grandson. His name? Meredith IV, of course!

TVGuide.com: It was interesting to see how the airport situation reversed itself in this week's episode. Last week, you, Uchenna and Joyce scrounged around for an earlier flight. This time, you both opted to stick with the first flight you found.
Meredith Smith: Well, we did hear about the Frankfurt flight. We also heard that it was completely booked, although we had a feeling that Rob and Amber were on standby. But at that time, we figured that a bird in the hand was worth two in the bush. And quite frankly, we were both exhausted. The idea of not having to run so hard was pretty sweet.
Gretchen Smith: Also, international connections are oftentimes difficult to make. We were hoping they might miss the connecting flight. We discussed the decision with Joyce and Uchenna, who felt pretty much the same way. So we weren't alone!

TVG: What was your strategy going into the race?
Meredith: When we first started, we thought it was cute to say things like "Old age and strategy will outperform youthful exuberance." It wasn't long before we found that that was pretty silly to say. When we saw the quality and class of the teams we were up against, we knew we were in for something more.
Gretchen: It hit us literally in Lima, Peru, when we stationed ourselves at the front of the bus. We were in a great position and got off and started running the five blocks to the clue box. So we're jogging along and suddenly, like a band of Indians, the other teams come running along, screaming and yelling and leaving us in their dust. So our strategy really — and I know it sounds corny — was to just play by the rules and try to respect our competitors. We didn't want anyone to think of us as the "old team" and we knew they wouldn't give us any slack anyhow.

TVG: You made it further than any other team in your age group has before. Do you think it's possible for an older team to actually win the race?
Meredith: Absolutely. There was actually a point in the race where we thought we might have a chance. Anything can happen in a racing situation. You can have the best car at the Indy 500 and blow a tire and you're out of the race. In retrospect, we think that we probably squeezed it as far as we knew how and got every drop out of it. Coming in fourth was no shortcoming as far as we're concerned.

TVG: There were certainly several moments — like when you were pushing that elephant in India — where viewers were more than a little concerned for your health.
Meredith: Well, a lot of things happened on that challenge. First, Gretchen was told by a local to get on top of the elephant. Then kids in the crowd kept riding under the elephant, so I had to pull Gretchen and all these kids underneath. We also had a broken wheel, which made it difficult to steer. At one point, the wheel went over my foot and broke three bones! So from that point forward, I was racing with an injured foot. So that's what you were seeing. When it looked like I was going to have a heart attack, I was really in pain.

TVG: Speaking of India, did you ever figure out why the crowds gave you the rock-star treatment?
Gretchen: No, we didn't figure it out. Maybe it had to do with our being older. The other teams said that none of them got that reception. But we had a great time with those people. What they didn't show was I said, "We need a taxi," and they all banded around me. It was wonderful. I said, "Meredith, I don't know what to do when they start cheering." And he said, "Blow them kisses." So I was blowing kisses like the prom queen. {l{

TVG: Gretchen, you have a very... er, distinctive voice. Do you get that often?
Gretchen: I always knew that. I have to record my answering-machine message 50 times to get the voice right! I keep trying to change it by talking lower or something. But it's been my voice for 66 years. When we go into a supermarket now, someone will go, "Oh, you're Gretchen from The Amazing Race!" They don't say that they recognize my face. They say, "We recognized your voice!" And I go, "Oh nooo! Don't say that!" [Laughs]

TVG: Ray said some pretty mean things about you both during the course of the race. Did his comments bother you?
Meredith: We actually felt sorry for him when he was on The Early Show. It was almost like "The Meredith and Gretchen Show," with Ray defending himself. You know, Ray's a good guy. There's nothing wrong with him. I think he was frustrated because he had to hang with us, but he wanted to be up competing with Rob and Amber. He actually sent us an e-mail before the show aired and said, "Don't be surprised about some of the things you might hear from me. I stuck my foot way down my throat any number of times. It was only done in the heat of competition and don't take it personally." And we didn't.
Gretchen: I told him, while we're playing true confessions, we were calling you "Velcro" all the time because you were sticking so close to Rob and Amber!

TVG: How did you feel about those two, by the way? You did go along with one of their ideas by quitting the meat-eating roadblock in Argentina.
Meredith: I think Rob took more credit for that than he might have deserved. I couldn't eat that meat, and I was ready to figure out something myself. I felt that if I could get it back up once I got it down, I could complete it. So I went over in the bushes and tried to upchuck, but couldn't . He's a very manipulative guy and it came out on the race. I think viewers will make their own judgment as to how he played the game. My feeling was that it wasn't a totally level playing field. He had plenty of prior experience. People recognized him and Amber throughout the race and were falling over themselves to offer them a hand. You saw his character on Survivor and he was no different in this game.

TVG: If you ran the race over, what would you do differently?
Gretchen: Everyone seemed to think that my having been a flight attendant was a definite advantage. If I had had to serve a meal or evacuate an airplane, I could have done very well, but otherwise, it offered no advantage at all.

TVG: What's a funny moment that didn't make the final cut?
Meredith: When we were in Soweto, Uchenna and Kelly came to our room during the night and brought us some clothes. [Editor's note: They were stripped of all their possessions after coming in last on a nonelimination leg.] Kelly brought two T-shirts for Gretchen and Uchenna gave me a great deal of things, including several pairs of boxer shorts. They fit Gretchen perfectly! So Gretchen wore Uchenna's underwear for some of the legs.
Gretchen: Oh, they did not fit me! They were way too big! Way too big! Have you seen the size of Uchenna, Meredith? Shame on you for saying that. [Laughs]
