Romber Alert !
« Reply #75 on: March 10, 2005, 08:56:21 PM »
Amber Alert!

On ''The Amazing Race,'' the teams have to play by Rob's rules: The Survivors are the fittest in the second leg, outwitting, outlasting, and outplaying the other teams by Josh Wolk

THE BLONDE LEADING THE BLONDE Megan and Heidi couldn't get their routes done

Last week there was much chatter that Rob and Amber had too many unfair advantages as a result of their Survivor fame to make this game fair: Witness the American who recognized them and helped them out in Peru. But this week it seemed that no one in either Peru or Chile was a fan of the All-Stars and they still came in first. It's time for everyone to concede that Rob is just a great player. (As for Amber, it's time to concede that she sure looks cute as a button standing next to a great player.) Actually, their having won Survivor should be an advantage for everyone else who saw their strategies televised, not them: It was like being given game films of another team before the Super Bowl. But did anyone learn the right lessons? No.

Perhaps Rob has some kind of supernatural mind-erasure powers. The same thing happened in All Stars: No one remembered that he had broken all of his promises on Marquesas. He was one of the least trustworthy players to step onto the All-Stars island, and yet everyone trusted him, including Kathy, who had been on that previous season with him. How far does Rob's power to cloud people's mind extend? As an experiment, I would like to see Rob stand in a room holding a pencil; after dropping the pencil, he would ask someone to pick it up. When the person did so, he would kick them in the ass. Then he would apologize, take the pencil back, and drop it again, asking the person — still rubbing their own smarting ass — to pick it up again. I'm guessing that this would go on for about six hours straight, only stopping when Rob's pencil-holding fingers cramped up.

And now, the Race competitors stared in disbelief when he bribed a security guard not to tell anyone about an earlier bus and then lied about it. The indignation on Debbie's face when she said, ''It makes me nauseous,'' was laughable. Remember how self-righteous everyone on the All-Stars jury was over Rob's lying? And how many of them went home with a million dollars? Exactly. So stop complaining and start playing the game.

The ones I feel bad for are Ray and Deana and Uchenna and Joyce, whom Rob enlisted in an alliance and quickly persuaded to fund his bribe. I used to work at Lifetime Television, and my job was to watch every single one of their TV movies to make five-second promos. I painfully recognize these teams' sad, self-defeating dedication to Rob as the story line of every abused-wife weeper in the Lifetime library. Rob will keep telling Ray and Uchenna separately, ''No, you're the one we're with to the end. I care about you the most.'' Then each player will buy Rob a sandwich or give him a piggyback ride through Namibia, and Rob will screw them both over at the detour and easily get first place again. Then when those two exhausted and bedraggled teams finally crawl across the finish line, barely avoiding elimination, Rob will pull them both aside again individually and say to each, ''I'm so glad you're here. I love you, and we're in it together.'' And they'll perk up, saying, ''Gosh, Rob, you mean it? Allies forever?'' Even if Phil Keoghan tries to stage an intervention — saying, ''He's no good for you! You can make it on your own!'' — they'll reply, ''You don't know him like I do, Phil. The way he looks at me when he's tied my knapsack to a pygmy and stolen my cab. . . . He really cares.'' I'm seeing Meredith Baxter Birney as Ray.

What it all boils down to is that Rob is a great player, mentally and physically, not to mention extremely entertaining to watch. I'm not seeing much competition for him. Ron and Kelly? Kelly's only on the second leg and she's already showing signs of crankiness. But I suppose that's the only good thing about being a POW — you always have a comeback for a snippy girlfriend: ''Oh, you told me we should have taken all the books on one trip? Sorry, they never taught book stacking in the Iraqi prison.'' Whaddya know, another argument won!

Lynn and Alex seem like fun guys, although I was surprised they shot their wad by using their ''bringing up the rear'' double entendre this early in the show, if you'll pardon both of our puns. It's a marathon, not a sprint, boys. And the way Lynn was sweating during a shoeshine challenge does not bode well for any physical challenges. If they ever do a hat-blocking competition, he's liable to keel over from a coronary.

Patrick seems to think he's a mastermind, but why then were he and Susan shocked to be out of money to buy the fish when they had just run out of money on a challenge mere hours before? With that short-term memory problem, I'm giving them 36 hours in the Rob-drops-a-pencil game. And could someone explain Patrick's mystery head wound to me? After the shoeshine challenge he had a bloody gauze pad above his eye, but by the time he landed in Santiago, there was no bandage, and no visible scar. Did Mommy kiss it and make it all better? Or did Mommy actually cause the wound when she kicked him in the head after he spent all their pesos on ''I Hate Rob'' bumper stickers?

As for Gretchen and Meredith, good Lord. I can't even concentrate on how good a team they might be, I'm so distracted by Gretchen's incessant monotonic hollering. I can't tell if Meredith is running to win the race or to get away from her. Which leaves Greg and Brian (whom I never could tell apart, so I will refer to both of them as ''Grian''), who stayed in the game only by barely outrunning the equally indistinguishable Megan and Heidi. Things don't bode well when you're struggling for last place against two women with their sorority letters on the butts of their sweatpants. At the end, Megan or Heidi — what's the difference? — proudly declared, '' 'I can't' never came out of our mouths.'' Well, Hegan or Meidi, here it is out of mine: You can't.

What did you think? Are Rob and Amber going to win the race in a walk? Who is most likely to give them a run for the money?

A big AMEN, gingerman!  {^[ I couldn't have said it better!  Romber Rocks!  }^! }^! I know...people can't stand the thought of them winning another Mill...but if they do...they will have earned it.  If they don't win, they will certainly be very entertaining!  After ASS, I thot I'd never like them, but on TAR...I love 'em!!  Gooo Romber!!  ]#*

Ya know something I really like about them?  The chemistry.  ]#[  They have gr8 chemistry! They mesh.  After watching a lot of TAR6 couples making such dang fools of themselves...Rombers are exceptionally refreshing!  <[/   Awww...they'll probably lose their cool at times...during tense, frustrating Tar moments, but I don't think it'll be anything wild or degrading.  Rombers are truly in love...and they show it.  It's not a put-on...it's the real thing.   }*{

Loved Josh Wolk's article, puddin! thanks for posting it! {^[
To answer Wolk's questions Are Rob and Amber going to win the race in a walk? Who is most likely to give them a run for the money?...Nope...NOT a walk.  Rob has been working his strategies from Day 1 & will continue unless they run into some verrrrry bad luck beyond Rob's control.
I think Susan/Patrick, Ray/Deana & U/J will give them a good run for their money...esp S/P!
Patrick seems to be the most paranoid about Romber & scheming to outwit them.
Ray/Kelly are too occupied w/ their relationship issues to be thinking much about anti-rob strategies!  ]][

Love them or not, but you have to give Rob credit for knowing how to play the game.  He and Amber have brought a new look to TAR  and he is applying the rules of Survivor: Outwit, Outplay, and Outlast to The Amazing Race. Even Phil has been struck dumbfounded with what they have been able to do so far in just three eps.  Give Rob credit for knowing the rules and knowing how to work them to your advantage. He knew exactly what he had to do at the Detour: quit while other teams were still out and nearly at the detour site so he would not have long to wait before his penalty clock started. And he was smart enough to know that if he could get just one more team to quit after their penulty clock started, they would be guaranteed not to come in last since the other team's penalty clock would not start until the next team arrived. I think he also nows realizes one of the tricks of the trade is not to worry about coming in first in each leg, but just concentrate on not coming in last: always keep one team behind you. There is at least one bunchup point iin each leg of the race and he saw how his three hour lead over the last place team disappeared at the bunching up at the car park waiting for it to open at 5AM with all nine teams there together waiting. He and Amber may not win, but I think they will go far and will give an added boost to the ratings each week as people tune in to see if and when Romber fails (just as the ratings for Jeopardy grew and grew and grew as Ken went on to win and win and win!)

Thanks for the excellent recap, Gingerman. You are right on the money!
I was LOL...evne clapping...absolutely in awe at Rob's cunning strategy!  |#'   Rombers are really helping this 7th TAR season AS WELL AS...over all...the entire cast.  It is the best since the premier season, IMO.
Very well balanced, charming, interesting, entertaining personalities.  I can't think of any team whom I dislike.  The only team that grated my nerves a bit was the hillbilly guy team who got philiminated first.  Not that I have anything against hillbillies, but their 'lingo' was kinda hard to listen to!  Now Tom from S3 Africa was a hillbilly, but I liked him. (most of the time). Just a few times, his talk bugged me.
  (^.# Anyways, kudos to whoever picked the cast for TAR7!  Love this season's show!  }^!  })}

You all know I'm torn about Romber.  Yes, they're good, and even if you think it isn't fair that they came in first after not completing the Roadblock last leg, they made up the time fair and square.  They did luck out that the earlier plane waited for them.  We know that doesn't always happen, ex-Survivors or no.  I just wish Rob weren't so darned self-satisfied.  I suppose he wouldn't be Rob if he were humble.

Ok, back to the appreciation....

It is always interesting to speculate on what the producers leave out during the editing. Last night was a good case in point. Lynn and Alex left the hacienda at 3:49AM and arrived at Cabana La Guatana at 6:00AM. That is a time span of two hours and 11 minutes to drive a total of 25 miles!!! Rob and Amber left at 6:59AM and after "getting lost" still completed the Roadblock at 9:00AM. They must have been speeding. But it gets better. They complete the Roadblock at 9:00AM and drive the 25 miles to the Mendoza airport, park the car, carry their bags into the airport, and check in and still make the 9:30AM flight departure! Rob must have really been racing down the highway! And their luck continues (just as Gus and Kim lucked out by being last at the airport in Canada) since they boarded the airplane in Mendoza LAST, their bags were off loaded FIRST!. And so much for airport security abroad (no check in at least 30 minutes before departure in Mendoza!)  Rob and Amber still manage to keep ahead of the crowd; even if the get Yielded later on, I do not think that they can be stopped by the other teams; the other teams are just going to have to do better. Question? Can one team be Yielded by more than one team at the Yield? I know each team can only use the Yield once during the race, but could the other teams all yield Rob and Amber at the same spot?  This may be the only way to slow them down!

Guessing the answer is no, since each team has a name tag and I doubt that more than one team could attach their tag to someone already Yielded.  The Yield is "courtesy of..." one team.

The Amazing Race - Rob and Amber ruffle more feathers with a win
Scott Tady, Times Staff
03/23/2005

Luck, persuasion and her future hubby's horse-riding skills carried Amber Brkich to another first-place finish in CBS's "The Amazing Race."

By finishing the fourth leg of the worldwide race ahead of seven other teams, Brkich and fiance Rob Mariano won a free trip to London. Two weeks ago, another first-place finish earned the duo a trip to the Bahamas.

"That's two trips down, two first places down, and more to come," Brkich confidently said, as the Brighton Township native and her Boston beau moved closer to "The Amazing Race's" $1 million grand prize.

They overcame some obstacles in Tuesday's episode.

At one point, Brkich and Mariano seemed hopelessly lost on a lonesome Argentina highway, but somehow the couple ended up promptly at the proper destination - a horse ranch.

Pleasantly surprised by their luck, Brkich commented, "Somebody's watching over us, that's for sure."

After acing a horse riding challenge, Mariano convinced an airport gate worker to let him and Brkich board an early flight to Buenos Aires. With the airplane on the runway just moments away from taking off, Brkich and Mariano's unexpected arrival on the jet angered four other teams who had thought they finally had ditched the "Survivor" sweeties.

"No freakin' way ... that's horse crap," said the team of California brothers Brian and Greg, disgusted by how Brkich and Mariano weaseled their way onto the plane.

"I hate them. I hate them so much," added Alex, who along with his boyfriend, Lynn, repeatedly have voiced their animosity toward Brkich and Mariano.

"They're kind of like an STD," Lynn said about Brkich and Mariano. "You've got to protect yourself from them. ... I detest them."

But Mariano made a new friend in Argentina, a motorboat driver named Carlos who helped the couple complete a challenge where they had to find a shipwreck. Mariano showed his gratitude by giving away his favorite fashion statement - a Boston Red Sox ballcap - to the Argentinian man.

Mariano and Brkich felt fortunate to have reached the shipwreck after the rough waters threatened to disable their boat.

"I tell you, we just keep getting lucky," Mariano said.

They were much luckier than the mother-son combo of Susan and Patrick, who reached the finish line last, and were eliminated from the contest. Patrick also had been highly critical of Mariano and Brkich.
