Well my two cents (well probably 40 cents).
The real problem with All Stars (especially for people who are diehard fans, is that with us religiously going over every single aspect of the race that we can before it airs, one of the few real surprises for us is team interactions (with each other, with locals and with other teams).
With the previous all stars we had (i think its safe to say) one of the most spoiled seasons we have ever experienced. And since we already new the teams to a far greater degree then any new team, it really, really didn't hold much in the way of surprises.
Really the big surprises were the flight issues in several episodes, and that well for myself at least isn't interesting.
If they do another All Stars, I will probably be very careful to avoid spoilers, so that more of the episodes are new to me.
As to selections for myself I have always been (unless you are a complete and total ass (Hi jonathug, Hi Will, Oh look the Weavers!!!) I want all stars to be the best racers. So that limits me.
That then puts me under one or two options.
1. The best overall teams (personal opinion of course as each individual season has different strengths and weaknesses) regardless of team makeup. THis option will, never, ever, ever happen. But its one I actually would really love to watch.
2. Try and create normal mix of racers (gay team, african american team, 2 all male teams, an older team, sibling or parent/child team, one or two all female teams, an every man team, two couples, one fighting couple team, one humor team ect), and then find what I find are the best racing teams that fit that criteria.
For example, on female teams I would look at all the female teams and then think which are do I think are the best racing (others might pick most entertaining, I almost never would) and use that to fill those roles. I also would not consider any team that didn't make it half the race (so teams that I liked like Brad & Victoria, Amanda & Kris, Mark & Bill, Zev & Justin sorry but I wouldn't pick you and I really like all of those teams).
So here would be my list. 11 teams.
1. Colin & Christie (I don't love them, but seriously...)
2. Kris & Jon (Again a no brainer)
3. Any of these Alpha Male team (because they absolutely should have been considered for season 11 and were not just due to being fit all male teams, which is utter crap in my opinion). Rob & Brennan (Season 1), Derek & Drew (season 3), Eric & Jeremy (season 9), or Tyler & James (season 10). Out of these four I would pick either Eric & Jeremy or Rob & Brennan as I find them to be the superior racing teams.
That none of those three sets made it for the first all stars is really unbelievable.
Now to newer teams.

4. Nick & Starr or Meghan & Cheyne (both have earned it) or even Tammy & Victor
5. Toni & Dallas or Margie & Luke (Love both teams so either would please me greatly).
6. Nicholas & Donald (Mainly due to no true older team doing well in many, many a season). Or Ken & Tina (I don't really think of them as older) but they did quite well.
7. Jaime & Cara (after all cab drivers need someone to hate)
8. Sam & Dan
9. Kisha & Jen (or if another female team is good this coming season)
10. Jet & Cord (really season 16 raced across the board so awful so often, but if I had to pick one team).
11. Off beat humor team would be happy with any of these three teams. Jon & Al, Ken & Gerard or Kynt & Vyxzin.

mswood, Amen to your thoughts on AllStars season. I am on record as not wanting to ever see an AllStars season again, but if there is one, then what you said is so close to the way I see it that there are only a few minor points of difference:
Ken was age 51 and Tina age 48 when they competed in Amazing Race 13. Was that too old to win? No way, but they are older!
I would pick Jon and Al over Kynt and Vyxsin just because I think Jon and Al were robbed on what could have been final victory by some fog and ineptness by Korean Airlines. They deserve the chance to go all the way and would provide great entertainment throughout doing so.

I would rather see a race of the fourth outs...or maybe the robbed teams like Brad/Vic, Zev/Justin, and a few unlucky first outs.
But I stand by loving NEW teams of ordinary people...not recruited, just wonderful applicants. There are thousands of them, we know it is possible. Look at the joy of season one.
