mswood, I believe the pronunciation was actually sow-oo-na, which I think either Gary or Matt referred to as Finnish. I am going to suggest that since the Estonian language is close to Finnish the pronuciation of each vowel as a single syllable is the way they do it too.

It's actually the way "sauna" is pronounced in almost any European language other than English

cdfe88, since puddin is obviously wrong about who cares, I will add a little extra personal knowledge to the situation. I sing in French (and am also reasonably fluent in speaking it), German, Italian and Russian from time to time (all 4 for a concert in 5 weeks). None of those languages except Russian meets your statement about how other European languages pronounce vowels.

Well, I'll add some personal knowledge as well. I personally know people from Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Belgium and they all pronounce "sauna" in the way I described. And I'm reasonably fluent in German and it has the same way of pronouncing "au".
