My algebra-trigonometry-calculus thing fell to pieces as I tried to figure out what times the teams checked in, but teams arrived in a 1h range into Interlaken, so I guess they'd be all bunched for the flights?

I'm guessing that the paragliders can't take off with that kind of wind blowing so the roadblockers were given the option to wait around to see if the wind keeps up or to hike their way back down the mountain.
Mel, obviously with his sprained groin, cannot even think about hiking down and so he waits around until eventually (per the montage clips) the wind finally goes down and off he goes.
Now whether or not waiting around like that while the rest of the teams head off will get them eliminated, I don't know.
