Melissa Rycroft’s Sweet Revenge: ‘Look at Me Now!’

Melissa Rycroft is getting used to being hugged.

In the past few weeks, the former Bachelor contestant turned Dancing with the Stars front-runner has been embraced — literally — by everyone from waitresses to fellow shoppers at the mall, to American Idol’s top dawg, Randy Jackson.

Spotting the judge as she walked from her trailer on the lot where both DWTS and Idol tape, Rycroft couldn’t believe Jackson even knew who she was. “He was like, ‘Heeeeeeey, how are you?’ ” the 26-year-old Dallas beauty says. And, then, of course, it happened: Jackson pulled her into a big bear hug.

“Just three months ago I was on the other side,” Rycroft says in the latest issue of PEOPLE, on sale Friday. “I am so not a celebrity.”

Still Nursing Wounds
But ever since her six-week engagement to Jason Mesnick on The Bachelor ended when he dumped her on national TV for runner-up Molly Malaney, she has become just that. Seven days after the televised kiss-off, Rycroft was on DWTS, where public sympathy — and her natural dancing ability — has made her a fan favorite.

Yet despite her way with the waltz, fame was never part of Rycroft’s plan. Instead? The former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader intended to spend the months after her Bachelor split nursing her wounds. “I go through stages,” Rycroft says of her grieving process. “I will shut down and lock myself in my room. And then I’ll get to the point where I can’t be by myself and I have to be around other people all the time. Otherwise I’ll drive myself nuts crying. I cry it out. Then one day I wake up and go, I’m okay.”

And if Rycroft sounds like an old pro at bouncing back after breakups, it’s because Mesnick wasn’t the first guy to let her get away.

Tuesday’s Dancing: What You Didn’t See

Oh, Snap!: During the show’s pre-taping, Julianne Hough suffered a wardrobe malfunction when the back of her top snapped while performing to the Kevin Rudolph Band. Hough, of course, never missed a beat. She charged through the rest of the performance with an arm across her chest, holding up her top, then went to get her top fixed before running through the performance again. Tom Bergeron grabbed the mic and told the crowd, “This time, we’re going to see if Julianne Hough’s top fully comes off.” It didn’t.

Stars Missing in Action: The dancers took their marks on stage following a commercial break, but two were noticeably missing. Kym Johnson could not find her partner David Alan Grier, and was seen asking, “Where’s David? Where’s David?” Seconds after the show started, Grier was seen slinking onto the floor. Moments later, Gilles Marini was also seen scurrying to his position behind his partner Cheryl Burke. Later, a guest asked Marini what he was doing. “I was eating a pizza!” he said.

An Ear-Splitting Bruno: At one point during the broadcast, Tom Bergeron told viewers that it was best they didn’t know what Bruno Tonioli was doing. So what was the judge doing? Tonioli pulled his left leg straight up and placed his foot toward his ear like a split — a sight that prompted at least one audience member to say, “It was very frightening.”

Feeling Frisky: Meanwhile, the usually reserved Len Goodman was shaking things as well. As soon as he walked to his chair at the judges’ table, he immediately turned to the audience and ripped open his blazer to show off his canary-yellow shirt. The audience cheered with approval. Goodman’s mood was equally sunny: He was seen dancing in his chair throughout the night.

DWTS -- Safe again!

I hate Tuesday's. As they whittled down the couples last night, we went from "I know we're safe" to "Let me get my farewell speech ready"...very nerve wracking.
But...We are S-A-F-E !!! ON to next week. Kym and I are dancing the Viennese Waltz.
Our song is "I Put A Spell On You". A mysterious, and moody arrangement. I'm really excited about it.
Kym is working on some beautiful choreography and I am eating my breakfast getting ready to head back into battle.
We have to step up our game every week now cause they are chopping heads, and it's no joke.
Thank you to everyone for all of your online support. We dance on...
