Carrie Ann Inaba on DWTS Semifinal: Watch Out for Lance & Cody

Despite Dancing’s most injury- and illness-riddled season ever, four contestants have survived to compete in Monday night’s semifinal performance show.

“It’s a perfect top four,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba tells PEOPLE of season seven celebrity finalists Cody Linley, Brooke Burke, Lance Bass and Warren Sapp. “It will be the best dancing we’ve ever seen in a semifinal.”

What makes the competition so exciting at this stage, says Inaba, is that “Everyone is so different. Brooke and Lance are already strong dancers. Warren is so charismatic and the way he is able to move his feet is beyond understanding for his body shape and size. It defies gravity. And Cody has made a phenomenal transformation from week one to now.”

Inaba says while Burke and Sapp have been praised as the season’s front-runners, the ones to watch are Bass and Linley, who reunites with partner Julianne Hough on Monday for the first time in three weeks following her appendectomy.

“I thought Cody did great with Edyta (Sliwinska, who filled in while Hough recuperated),” says Inaba, “but I like him better when he performs with Julianne because it brings out all the great aspects of who he is – fun, lively, energetic and a little bit silly.”

As for Bass, Inaba says, “it’s all about the momentum at this stage and the luck of the draw which dances they get.” Each couple will perform two dances on the live Monday night telecast.

Tuesday’s results show will determine which three couples will move on to the finals — and promises to be deliver a must-see entertainment lineup. For the first time ever, three musical guests – Aretha Franklin, John Legend and two-time Dancing champ Hough – will perform. Also, returning to the ballroom for the first time since capturing the season six mirror-ball trophy will be Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas.

EXCLUSIVE: DWTS' Lance Bass: What You'll See on Tonight's Show

Lance Bass is keeping an exclusive diary only on Usmagazine.com about his experience competing on Dancing With the Stars. Here is his entry about this week's semi-final round.

SEMI-FINAL SURPRISE
I was really surprised we made it through to the semi-finals, because I thought we were going home last week. Len [Goodman] gave us the lowest score out of all the couples, and he really influences how viewers vote. He basically tells America if we’re good or bad. When he gave me a 7, I thought it was over. Getting voted through just tells me that the fans really want to see us stay. I know I'm not the best dancer in the world, but I finally feel like everyone's for me now, instead of against me.

LEARNING FROM LEN
Len gave each couple an individual master class this week. Mine was last Wednesday. I thought he was going to come in and hate me, but it was great working with him! It's awesome to hear him say I'm the most improved. He's really rooting for me and told me he wants me to make it to the finals. That's great to hear from your nemesis! He helped me prepare my jitterbug routine and even took my hand and started dancing with me. He told me that he had "pigeon toes" when he started dancing, too, so he knew where I was coming from.

JITTERBUG TIME
Rehearsals have been pretty stress-free for tonight's mambo and jitterbug routines. We learned the choreography for our jitterbug last Wednesday in record time - in an hour as opposed to two or three. We’re dancing to the song “Jim Dandy" and doing a lot of tricks. There's choreography in there I never dreamt of doing: I'm throwing Lacey, she's flipping me - crazy stuff! On the show, you're not normally allowed to do lifts, but with the jitterbug you can. We're going to take full advantage of that.

ROCK THE VOTE
Producers wanted me dance to our song "Bye Bye Bye" for my freestyle routine if I make the finals, but I think [doing an *NSYNC routine] would hurt me in the end, because Len doesn’t like my *NSYNC moves. Instead, I've decided to go with to classic hip-hop moves from today with old-school music. Right now, I'm leaning towards dancing to “Tricky” by Run DMC, but I'm going to poll my fans on my MySpace page to see what they like best. It’s either that or “Ice Ice Baby.” I'll even let them weigh in if they want the '80s mullet back!

An interview with Edyta:

Exclusive Interview: Edyta Sliwinska of 'Dancing with the Stars'

Edyta Sliwinska is by far my favorite professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars. She is amazingly talented, is gorgeous, to boot, and is the only pro who has appeared on every season of the show. Unfortunately, she and her original partner, Jeffrey Ross, were the very first couple to be eliminated the season, but these past two weeks, she has been back on the dance floor to fill in for Julianne Hough who was recovering from surgery.

Edyta Sliwinska graciously spoke to BuddyTV this week and shared with us her insider's perspective on how difficult it is being on the show and why there are so many injuries this year. She also analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the four celebrities in the competition: Brooke Burke, Cody Linley, Lance Bass and Warren Sapp.

This is Debbie at BuddyTV, and today I'm talking to Edyta Sliwinska, one of the professional dancers of Dancing with the Stars. So, I think that everyone was really sad to see that Julianne had to take a break after her surgery, but I think everyone was really happy that you were able to take her place. How difficult was it was it to jump right in and teach Cody?

Well, I must say that this was probably the most difficult two weeks that I've ever had on Dancing with the Stars. First of all, I came on at the moment of the competition when you have to start to do two dances in one week, so that was very, very hard for Cody to learn in such a short period of time. And another thing is that I obviously don't know him, I don't know how he works, I don't know what kind of choreography works for him. So, as I mentioned, the limited time and all those obstacles made it really hard. But Cody is a great, great guy, and he really made it as easy for me as possible.

Great. And so, if they do go on to win, are you going to ask for a piece of the trophy?

You know what? Someone proposed that we should have three trophies, but to be honest with you, I think Julianne did most of the work. Remember that I danced with Cody only for two weeks, and she did not only for all the weeks in the competition before, but also, all the training before the show starts. She is his true partner, and I would just be happy to support them and enjoy it with them.

You mentioned that you didn't know Cody and his style of learning. How difficult is it to develop a chemistry between partners? Because that's so important in the performance as well.

You know, chemistry is something a little bit different because that refers, I would say, more to acting than anything else. Obviously, it's easier if you know the person, if you like the person, if you understand the person, but you can just also be professional. If you are, and you know how to act certain emotions, you can create chemistry, just like two actors create chemistry in a scene. But that communication, as you train for that is extremely important, and that's what we were definitely struggling with because we didn't have time to establish it.

You know, I think everyone kind of figures that all the stars work really hard on the show, but after watching the segments with Dr. Drew this week, I kind of realized that maybe there's a whole lot more going on underneath. Can you tell us about rehearsals and what kind of tensions might occur between the pros and the stars?

The tension comes from the fact that the further you go in the competition, the more tired you are. You're not getting any days off. The pressure is incredible. You have to learn two dances and perform them in front of 20 million people. The time is very limited. even if two pros had to learn those two dances in a week. So, what's happening is that people are tired. This is a very physically demanding thing, and it's very easy to snap. We, as pros, we think that we know what we're doing and we certainly have a lot of experience. There are always disagreements about how much we should practice. We try to push our celebrities as hard as possible. Celebrities sometimes have prior commitments, and they cannot put as much to it as we would like, so that's very often a problem. And all sorts of things that come up just out of stress and fatigue that come with this really hard regime of training.

You know, this season seems like there are a lot more injuries, and the fatigue and all of that probably contributes to that too.

Absolutely. We push our stars so hard. You know, what you see on TV looks like we obviously have fun and looks like easy, but it's so not easy. Every season, everyone wants to look better than the couples in the previous season, and that's why maybe there are more injuries this season than there has ever been before. It's hard.

Dancers often get injured because they're always working so hard and performing all the time. Is the level of injuries that occurred this year unusual in the dance world?

I think it's quite unusual because all those injuries occurred at the same time. But yes, you are right. Injuries always happen. You know, normally, however, we would take two, three weeks off to recover and then we go on. What's different about this competition is that you cannot take any time off. You just have to go on, or, like Misty [May-Treanor], pull out completely. Those are the only two choices that you can have. And perhaps, also, what's happening with some of the dancers on the show, like Karina [Smirnoff] and Kym [Johnson] – I'm lucky I didn't get injured – is that we've been working really hard, not only on this season, but we've done a couple of seasons before, and don't forget about the tour, without any major breaks. This summer, we had a little break, but really, we've been going on for two years without a minute to just stop and to let our bodies breathe and rest. So maybe all that came together, and that's how all the injuries are happening.

Well, the tour is going to start soon, but I hope that you'll get a break afterwards. Another thing that I am noticing that is a theme this year is with Len Goodman, the head judge. I feel that he's kind of nitpicking a lot more, especially with Lance and Lacey [Schwimmer]. What's your opinion on using more modern dance elements and doing non-traditional things that Lance and Lacey have been doing?

You know, I actually really like what they do and their personal style that they explore, and they should definitely go in that direction now. What Len is doing is… You know, he's the only proper ballroom judge in this competition that had ballroom training and was a ballroom dancer. So, if he is not going to defend the traditional ballroom style, who will? And I think this is fine. This is great that we have variety on the show, that we have couples like Lance and Lacey that bring something new, and that we have couples like Brooke and Derek, who are probably more traditional. We have people with great personalities and charisma like Warren. That makes the show so exciting and, I think, successful. But Len has to defend the tradition because that's all he's about. Bruno and Carrie Ann are not going to do it, so I think that's his job and I don't see anything wrong about it.

And finally, my last question. I wanted to ask you what you thought, of the four teams that are remaining, what do you think are their strengths, and what do you think are the things they have to work on as they get into the semi-finals?

OK, Derek and Brooke, this is probably the best couple if we talk about the quality of dancing. I think Brooke has improved a lot and she's amazing. Definitely, her strength is going to be the technique and basically, the quality of dancing that she brings. She's probably the best dancer out there. Now, I just hope that people will not think that she doesn't need support and stop voting for her. So she needs to make sure that she comes at the audience and let them know that she always will need the support because, as you know, actually, maybe last season, the best dancer won, but in all previous seasons, it has not been the best dancers that got the mirror ball trophy. So she needs to be careful with that.

And then we have Warren. I think that Warren needs to rehearse as much as possible because he's very busy, but he needs to put more time into training and not rely only on his great personality and charisma, but also try to work a little bit more details on these dances. I think if he gets to the final and he becomes compared to Brooke, people will see more clearly that, yes, he has this amazing connection with the audience, but his technique lacks a lot.

And then we have Lance and Lacey. Well, here's a couple that tries something new, that tries to explore different styles of dancing, and I actually think that is their strength. They are always exciting to watch. They are always full of surprises. They are always very entertaining. But Lance does have very poor footwork. He definitely needs to work on that. He definitely needs to work on polishing the way he moves. He picks up the steps and he has great rhythm, but he really needs to look at his technique.

And the last couple, we have Cody and Julianne. Here's Cody with this great energy and he's just all out there. But what Cody needs to work on, and I'm talking about my personal experience, is his focus. He's very talented, and if he can only get himself to pay more attention to what Julianne is saying and to be able to stay focused on practice for more than an hour's time, he can improve a lot. Otherwise, what's happening is kind of like, he only learns the routine, and then he brings all this energy into it, so sometimes it comes across as a little spastic. But if he could learn the routine and to put more time to polish the details, to work on quality, I really think he has the potential to match the quality that Brooke Burke has. But normally, he just doesn't have the time to do it because he's so all over the place.

Well, he's just 18.

He's almost 19, and I know it's really hard for him, I really do. And never blame him about it. It's just his personality, but if he wants to win, he really needs to focus.

RealityFreakWill,
I appreciate your views on who will be eliminated tonight and who will win next week. However, I have alternate views. I think that Cody/Julianne are the unlucky couple elminated tonight. His audience (pre-teens is the largest segment) probably does not include a lot of DWTS watchers. Warren and Kym continued to dance well and Warren's primary audience, NFL fans, also does not have a lot of interest in DWTS, but I think it's bigger than Cody's audience. Brooke's core audience is also likely to be small but her dominance of first place (until last night) earned her decent votes. That is in jeopardy as a result of her sub-par jive. Thank goodness she hit it out of the park in her salsa. Lance also has a limited primary audience, but his exceptional performance last night earned him the front-runner status going into next week. I predict Brooke, if she survives, will retake the top spot next week.

All of that translates into my prediction:
#4. Cody/Julianne
#3 Warren/Kym
#2 Lance/Lacey
#1 Brooke/Derek

An interesting article:

DWTS Watch: Lance & Lacey Lead the Way

The final four performed on Dancing With the Stars Monday night and with the highest combined score of the night, Lance Bass and partner Lacey Schwimmer proved that the show must go on — even when the shoe falls off.

In a first for the hit reality show, Lance, who has already danced barefoot this season, accidentally had a shoe fall off during his jitterbug. But the former NSync-er didn’t miss a beat and got the highest score of the night on the dance, a 29. And with a 28 on his mambo, Lance easily led the competitors with a cumulative 57 out of 60.

After the show, Lance told OK! how it felt when he lost his shoe. “At first, panic, of course, because I was concerned with safety," he explained. "But after I realized I’d be fine, I just ate it up. It was so much fun. It made me smile and laugh. I had a really good time.”

Adds Lacey, “I think that he’s by far the most improved in this entire competition and it showed tonight.”

Despite his high scores, however, Lance doesn’t think he's a.... um, shoe-in, to make it to next week’s finale. “It’s anyone’s game," he says. "It’s a good competition.”

Meanwhile, Brooke Burke, who has been the favorite all season with partner Derek Hough, had her first bad dance, a jive that judge Len Goodman called a “disaster” and earned only a 21.

“It was a hiccup," Brooke sighed to OK! backstage. "I loved that dance. I don’t know really what went wrong and it was hard to find my way back into it.” As for the harsh results from the judges, she said she's taking like an adult: “I know when I do things wrong and I can totally take it.”

Luckily for DWTS’ golden couple, their second dance, the salsa, was a return back to form, earning a 28 for a combined score of 49, good enough for a tie for second overall for the night.

“I’m really happy that we pulled it together for the salsa,” Brooke told OK!

“She killed it,” Derek said. “That’s the test of a true champion — messing up a little bit and coming back strong.”

Gridiron great Warren Sapp and partner Kym Johnson hoped they’d done enough to get to the finals, also earning a combined score of 49 for their two dances.

“Hopefully we’ve got a shot,” Warren told OK!. Asked about the judging on Monday, he said, “It looked like they were out for blood tonight! But I really enjoyed the crowd.”

The legendary linebacker also defended himself against the judges’ season-long focus on what they say is his flat footwork. “That’s what made me a Hall of Fame football player," he explained. "Without these feet, I wouldn’t be standing here!”

Warren’s daughter Mercedes’ birthday is tomorrow, and he’d be happy to celebrate both that and a ticket to the DWTS final. “Either we're ‘parting’ like hell or ‘partying’ like hell,” he laughed.

Cody Linley, whose partner Julianne Hough came back to dance with him after having appendix surgery two weeks ago, got the lowest combined score of the night, 46, and couldn’t hide his disappointment.

“I felt like I did my job,” Cody said. “We got a standing ovation after our paso doble. I was pretty upset with the judges. Usually, I agree 100 percent with their critiques but tonight, no, not at all. I’m bummed that I’m in last place after Julianne coming back and rocking those two dances. I felt confident and great about them and to receive bad scores was tough. I really hope tonight wasn’t my last dance with Julianne.”

If he doesn’t survive tomorrow’s elimination night, Cody at least knows he’ll have no problems getting dates!

The 18-year-old Hannah Montana cutie, who turns 19 on Thursday, confided that because of DWTS, women of all ages are recognizing him now. “Cougars are hitting on me and I say, bring them on!” he smiled.

An interesting article:

Monday’s Dancing: What You Didn’t See

D-i-s-r-e-s-p-e-c-t: Brooke Burke was brazenly scolded by Carrie Ann Inaba for violating the ballroom’s “no lifts” rule during her jive routine, telling Burke that the maneuver was “disrespectful.” Judges Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli backed up Inaba, calling Burke’s performance “a disaster” and “a mess.” Visibly shaken (though slightly bolstered by the crowd’s boos), Burke took the news and the scores – her lowest ever – in stride and rebounded with a saucy salsa in the second half of the show. Afterward, she told PEOPLE she was upset she had let so many people down. “Rightfully so, the first dance was a disaster and it was all my fault,” Burke said. “The lift that she was talking about that she called disrespectful was unintentional. I didn’t mean for my feet to come off the floor. We have a lot of respect for the rules the judges have at the ballroom and we did not mean for that to happen at all.”

R-e-s-p-e-c-t: Very little air conditioning flowed into the ballroom during a pre-taped segment with Aretha Franklin, which will air on Tuesday’s results show. (The Queen of Soul prefers balmy temps to keep her vocal chords warm and loose.) Franklin regaled the ballroom with “Chain of Fools” and her timeless woman anthem “Respect,” which reunited season six champs Mark Ballas and Kristi Yamaguchi on the ballroom floor for a cha-cha-esque routine for the first time since last May. Yamaguchi tells PEOPLE she’s secretly hoping Brooke Burke can hang on for next week’s finale. “We were talking a little bit when we were in the hair trailer,” Yamaguchi says. “I complimented her on how she’s handling everything and juggling four kids with this schedule. It’s tough and she’s really been great at managing and pacing herself through this.”

His Left Foot: Lance Bass was completely ship-shape with his and partner Lacey Schwimmer’s nautical-inspired jitterbug. Dedicated to his 82-year-old grandfather, Jim Bass, who sat proudly in the front row at the ballroom. “This is the first time he’s been to L.A. since shipping off to World War II,” Bass told PEOPLE after the show. As if the pressure of having his grandfather and father at the show wasn’t enough, Bass lost a sneaker within seconds of beginning the fast-paced routine. “With the adrenaline of a live show, you just kick a lot harder and it just flew right off,” Bass said, shrugging his shoulders. “What are you going to do?” No shoe? No problem. “I just fast forwarded in my head ‘what steps do I have to do that require me to land on my left foot?’ And I thought ‘there’s nothing that’s going to hurt me’ so I thought fine, I can do it.” He did it scoring big from the judges and got homemade chocolate chip cookies from Schwimmer’s mom, Laurie, to boot. Schwimmer toted a big plastic container full of the yummy treats, happily sharing with her fellow DWTS cast members (Warren Sapp was a happy camper), crew and even members of the press.

Misjudging Cody: Despite getting lambasted by the judges for his and partner Julianne Hough’s paso doble and salsa (and getting the night’s lowest score), Cody Linley says the evening was a triumph. “I was feeling the audience support, honestly. I felt really confident and awesome about our dances. We went out there and we rocked it,” Linley said. “I wasn’t feeling the judges and they weren’t feeling me. All I can say is I really want to dance one more time with Julianne and if people can vote, they should do it.” Linley, who turns 19 on Thursday, says the best birthday celebration would be to get to advance to the finals. “I’m ready to rock the finals. I can celebrate my birthday after I win that trophy. If I can get the support from those fans to dance one more week, I won’t let them down.”

Trash Talking: If there’s one thing Warren Sapp knows how to do, it’s get pumped up for the big moments. With his mother and kids Warren and Mercedes in the audience, Sapp turned on the charm and pulled out all the stops for his mambo and jitterbug routines, even shedding his top coat to reveal a red sequined vest and a pair of muscular arms. His scores earned him a tie for second place with Brooke Burke after the semifinal round. But that’s not deterring Sapp from focusing on next week’s finale. “I got my eye on the championship,” he said confidently. “Lance came to rock the floor tonight. He tore it up. I hope he peaked! I got one more week to get to the top of that leader board.”

Standing as the night's most-watched network for the 8th time in the last 9 weeks, ABC's Monday lineup was up over the previous week in Total Viewers (14.5 million vs. 14.1 million), posting week-to-week increases for the 2nd week in a row.  In fact, the Net registered its largest audience on the night in 6 weeks - since 10/06/08.  In addition, ABC ranked No. 1 on the night Women 18-49 (4.7/11 - tied) and Women 25-54 (5.9/13).

"Dancing with the Stars" (8:00-9:30 p.m.)
Monday's most-watched program in all 9 of its telecasts so far this season, ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" saw gains over the previous week for the 2nd week running in both Total Viewers (19.7 million vs. 18.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (4.3/10 vs. 4.2/10).  In fact, "DWTS," featuring the semifinal round of the dance competition, drew its largest audience since its season premiere and highest young adult rating in 6 weeks - since 9/22/08 and 10/6/08, respectively. A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 21% at the same point in 2007

Julianne Hough's Blog

Julianne Hough: "I'm Nervous Going Into Tonight"

Hey, everyone, sorry for the late post. I've been incredibly busy today - and every day. Ha, ha.

So about last night. I don’t know what the judges were watching or thinking. I don’t know what they had a problem with. I think they simply had it in for Cody and didn’t want him to make the finals. I thought he did a great job. I went and watched the dances again and he was awesome. I thought he should have had much better scores and better comments.

Not that he needs any defense, but it was hard to learn two dances this week, on top of the fact it was the first week we were back together. He has been really emotional. That was apparent last week when we talked to Dr. Drew. Cody's also really tired. It’s been 13 weeks since we started this whole thing. He’s exhausted.

I just don't think the judges got it last night. You can tell, I can't figure out what they were looking at. I feel like they haven't been nice to us this whole season. Cody has been trying so hard. But he doesn’t seem to be able to anything right for the judges. I feel bad for him.

As for tonight, I’m nervous going into the show. I think it might be our last night. Cody’s 18 and this is probably the biggest thing he’s done. I think the opportunities are just going to flow to him. I think this is going to be a big thing in his life and his career. He’s done an awesome job. I don’t think he could’ve done anything more. No matter what happens, I’m so proud of him.

Before I got, I want to get back to some of you who've written in.

Heather, thanks for asking about my dad. He’s doing great. He’s up and back to work. He still signing his emails Love your dad, the gimp. I’m doing Christmas in Washington, a big special that will be on TNT, and I invited him to come to Washington with me. He loves politics and all of that.

Kitty, you wanted to know if there’s anyone I haven’t met that I want to. I’m sure there is, but I feel like I met so many people last week at the CMAs. I had the best time interviewing all the stars and meeting everyone who inspired mewhile I was growing up. Like Reba. Actually, she came up to me and asked how I was feeling. She was concerned - and so sweet. I kind of couldn't believe she knew who I was. It flustered me a little. But it was fun.

And inside, Kenny Loggins was sitting behind me. He said excuse me, but I’m such a big fan of yours. I said, Are you kidding? You’re Kenny Loggins. I was blown away. It was fun. I’m like their biggest fans and they’re coming up to me. It’s weird.

Just being there was awesome, an awesome experience. It was so refreshing getting back there and being in that scene. It was good to get away from LA.

I had a blast.

Donna and everyone else who say they voted for me and Cody - multiple times: Thanks for your support!

Elizabeth, the routine with my brother wasn’t taped. It was live, and that night , in fact, was the first time I’d gone all-out since my operation. What’s funny is that Derek and I choreographed that routine in about 20 minutes. We did it the night before. I don’t know how we do it so quickly. When we work together, we don’t talk about what we’re going to do. We just start dancing. It kind of naturally falls into place. We don’t have to think. It was fun.

Jennifer: Yesterday was your 16th birthday? Happy birthday! I don’t think I even celebrated my 16th birthday. I don’t think I had time to celebrate my 16th birthday. I hope you had a great day.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Julianne

As expected (at least by me), Cody and Julianne got the boot tonight. Julianne did get the opportunity to sing one of her hit songs.
That leaves 3 good couples for next week. As I have previously indicated, my vote is going to be for Brooke over Lance and Warren, but I think it will be close.

I do wish ABC would stop with the dragged out results show. I gave up and went to the Kentucky-North Carolina game on ESPN and totally forgot about the results until I signed in to the board.

8 p.m.? Let's recap what you saw last night. 9 p.m.? Let's recap what you saw at 8 p.m. and the results are coming up, but first, Samantha is backstage with Warren to ask him about the crap he just took.

Hey, ABC is getting ratings, I know, but enough is enough.
Just here to visit.

PRESS RELEASE

OVERNIGHT ABC RATINGS (FOR 11/18)

Quick Take for Tuesday, November 18, 2008

ABC Posts Week-to-Week Gains in Viewers and Adults 18-49, Drawing its Largest Audience Since Premiere Tuesday, Excluding the Nights of the Debate and Election

"Dancing with the Stars Recap" is Up Over the Prior Week by 1.5 Million Viewers and by 14% in Adults 18-49

"Dancing with the Stars Results" Hits Season Highs in Viewers and Adults 18-49, Winning its Time Period in Total Viewers for the 5th Consecutive Telecast

Tuesday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC's Tuesday lineup posted increases over the previous week of 6% in Total Viewers (12.1 million vs. 11.4 million) and 8% in Adults 18-49 (2.7/7 vs. 2.5/6). Excluding the nights of the second Presidential debate and the Presidential election, the Net delivered its largest audience since season premiere Tuesday - since 9/23/08.

"Dancing with the Stars Recap" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
ABC's "Dancing with the Stars Recap" built on the previous week's telecast by 1.5 million viewers (11.8 million vs. 10.3 million) and by 14% in Adults 18-49 (2.4/6 vs. 2.1/5).

"Dancing with the Stars Results" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
ABC's "Dancing with the Stars Results" hit season highs in both Total Viewers (17.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (4.0/10). The penultimate episode won the 9 o'clock hour in viewers, while standing in a near tie for first place in the key adult sales demo (with Fox's "Fringe" - 4.1/10). "DWTS Results" led its time period for the 5th consecutive telecast. "DWTS Results" defeated its unscripted competition in the time period, NBC's second hour of "The Biggest Loser: Families," by 9.0 million viewers and by 11% in Adults 18-49 ("Loser" = 8.5 million & 3.6/9 in Adults 18-49). Actor Cody Linley was the ninth celebrity dancer to leave the competition this season.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 21% at the same point in 2007. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

An interesting article:

Tuesday’s Dancing: What You Didn’t See

The One-Shoe Jackpot: With a semifinal “show-stopping” mambo, followed by a “shoe-tossing” jitterbug, Lance Bass went from dark horse to Dancing’s surprise front-runner and judges’ favorite. “Getting a nine and then a 10 from Len–that’s a feat in itself!” Bass exclaimed. “Going into the finals, we suddenly have Len on our side, it’s so odd, but so perfect! Len didn’t like my dances when I was wearing both shoes, didn’t like my dance when I wore no shoes, but he loved the dance that I did with one shoe!”

Bass’s partner Lacey Schwimmer did her best to temper her partner’s enthusiasm going into the finals, saying diplomatically, “All three of the celebrities have what it takes to win, so it’s anybody’s ball game from here on out. Lance and I are going to pull out all the stops so that we can to win this thing!” With the audience and the judges (finally) backing them up, the one-time “outcasts” have the mirror-ball trophy in their sights. “Our confidence is definitely high,” Bass said, “We’ve tried taking chances all season long, just to see what works. Now we know what works, we’re going to use it to our advantage.”

Play Misty for Cody: Cody Linley may have lost his shot at the mirror-ball trophy, but he certainly danced his way into the hearts of his pro partner, and his fellow contestants. “Cody has grown so much,” Julianne Hough said. “He has become a man on this show, and you can see it in the way that he acts, and I couldn’t be more proud of him.” “You get closer and closer to the people that are left,” a misty-eyed Lance Bass said after the show, “and Cody was definitely someone that we got really close to. He was like a brother to us, and we watched him grow from a boy to a man.”

Hough Stumping for Hough: With two-time DWTS champ Julianne Hough out of the competition, she wasn’t shy about which remaining couple she was backing. “Brooke and Derek, all the way!” Julianne yelled along the press line, adding, “Everyone that voted for us, please vote for them!” Though Derek and his partner Brooke Burke have made the finals, the “other Hough” told PEOPLE “There’s just a lot to do.” “I felt that Brooke deserved to be in the finals, but as far as feeling ’safe’? That’s a different story. You never feel safe on this show.”

False Sense of Security: Though Burke claims she did feel safe on Tuesday’s results show. “He was holding me up the entire time, hugging me so tightly, I felt very safe and cozy up there,” said Burke. “Actually, If we had been eliminated, I was going to snap her neck to save her the pain of being eliminated,” quipped Derek, who then amended his comment after finding out Brooke’s fiancé David Charvet was nearby. “I was putting her in a sleeper-hold, trying to rock her to sleep so that she would get light-headed and pass out before they announced the fact that we didn’t make the finals.”

Family First, Finals Second: One-time quarterback-killing machine, Warren Sapp once boasted that surviving past the first week of DWTS would be a victory in itself. So how did the NFL Hall of Fame defensive tackle celebrate making it to the ballroom finals? By skipping press and taking his daughter, Mercedes, out for a birthday dinner.

“He’s a family man first, a working father second and a dancing man third!” partner Kym Johnson explained. “He’s taking his daughter out for her birthday tonight, and that’s all he has his sights set on.” Johnson, who last made the finals of DWTS with Joey Fatone only to finish second, promised to crack the whip on Sapp’s return. “When he gets back to Los Angeles, he’s all mine!” she said. “My focus is on the mirror-ball trophy, so I’ll practice wherever we can. I’ll grab Warren on a bus stop, and I’ll start teaching him dance steps there if I have to.”

An interview with Cody and Julianne:

"I tried and that is ultimately what I wanted to do."

How are you feeling?
Julianne: I am feeling great, thank you for asking.
Cody: I look at the is whole experience and feel proud, confident and excited for the future. I am blessed to be walking away from this competition with a true gift, that I received from Julianne, and the fans especially.

How proud are you of each other for making it so far?
Julianne: When I first met Cody I thought - Oh, this is going to be fun - an 18-year-old kid. I had no idea how deep and in touch with all his friends he really is. He is so caring and loving and determined to work hard. I cannot be more proud of him. He has been the most different partner I have had on any of my seasons. He is a winner to me for sure. I said from day one that this show would completely change his life and his opportunities now are incredible.
Cody: I never expected to do this well. I am proud of myself because I made my family proud and represented myself well. I felt like I tried and that is ultimately what I wanted to do. My goal in life is to give 100 percent at everything I do and felt like I totally did. Now I am getting emotional!

Did you get a lot of new fans from doing Dancing With The Stars?
Cody: Yeah I am feeling the love from the fans, and the girls are getting older. From Hannah, my Disney fan base was 8-14-year-olds. They were the ones who'd recognize me and be excited to see me. Now I have 8-year-olds to the Cloris Leachman set. I'm like heck yes! I met a mom on a plane and she said if I was ever in Oxnard, Calif., here's my phone number, come by and I'll cook you a home-cooked meal because I know how hard it is. She actually gave me half of her bacon, egg and cheese bagel, too.

What's next for you both?
Cody: There's a lot going on. After this it's home for Thanksgiving to eat lots of food. I have been loosing weight on the show. December 7th, there is a new Hannah Montana episode marking Jake Ryan's return. I have an independent horror film coming out called Forget Me Not, which is really scary and you'll see a totally new side of me you have never seen. Also for Christmas I recorded a part in a 20-disc audio book called The Word Of Promise. It's the bible read by teen celebrities and I play Jesus. Jordin Sparks and Jesse McCartney are just a few of the people also involved.
Julianne: I have my Christmas CD out at Target. I'll be promoting that and doing a couple of shows including Christmas in Washington. I am excited about that. There is also a really cool tour that I am going to be on that will be announced soon.

Is there a chance you might do the Dancing With The Stars tour?
Cody: I'd love to do it, it'll be fun and the tour doesn't conflict with my Hannah Montana schedule. Just going to see all the fans and dancing in different cities would be an amazing time. I am looking forward to being there at some point. Nothing is finalized yet but I'll maybe make an appearance - you will see me in a city near you.
Julianne: I'll bring him out on the road with me and he can come sing with me as he's a great singer, too.

Julianne Hough's Blog:

Julianne Hough: "Vote For My Brother Derek"

Don't be sad. Someone has to leave; too bad it was us, but it's the name of the game. Cody and I hoped for the best and expected the worst. We definitely got the worst. We’re OK with it, though. He came to terms with it. He came such a long way since the beginning, and I’m so proud of him. When I first me him, I thought he was going to be this young, immature kid, but as I’ve gotten to know him, I've realized that he’s a deep, loving young man.

He’s going to have a lot of opportunities coming his way from doing this show, putting his heart on his sleeve, and trying so hard. I think he made a lot of new fans.

I feel like I've been awake since yesterday. I stayed up with Derek late last night; we were hanging out after the show and he asked if I wanted to help him out with some lifts he was practicing for Brooke. I said absolutely, anything I can do to help you win. I’m totally rooting for you

I want everyone who voted for Cody and me – first, thank you very much – but start voting for Brooke and Derek!

I got up at 3:45 am to get ready for Good Morning America. Then I got home and did phoners with radio stations and now I’m doing this blog.

I want to thank all of you who have listened to my album, said such nice things about my songs, and waited patiently for last night's performances of "My Hallelujah Song." I was excited it finally ran. As I wrote a few weeks ago when that was taped, I’ve sung in front of thousands of people, but I don’t think I”ve ever been as nervous as when I performed on the show in front of my peers and the producers. It was fun but definitely nerve-wracking.

A lot of you have asked what's next. Well, there’s one more week and because everyone is back for the finale, I figured I’d stay here in case my brother needs any more help. I’m presenting at the AMAs. I’m doing some last minute stuff. Then packing up my clothes and shipping everything back to my place in Nashville.

I’m spending Thanksgiving with my family in Las Vegas. I’m doing the run of Christmas shows. I have one in Washington, which I mentioned yesterday. Getting ready for next year. There are two really great tours coming up. I’m 99.9% sure I’ll be on one of them.

I won’t be on Dancing this spring season. I don’t know about the fall. Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see. I’m definitely going to focus on the music. My first album was a learning experience, and I can’t wait for the next one. I feel like the writing and producing will be even better, really awesome.

My prediction: I really hope Brooke and Derek win. I think they deserve to win. From day one, they’ve been awesome. I think Brooke is the most technically sound of the celebrities and she’s a beautiful dancer.
