Rob & Amber are back

By Scott D. Pierce
Deseret Morning News

Rob Mariano has almost won both "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race." He did win the love of his life on the former, and they're still very much in love after surviving the latter.
But can "Boston Rob" succeed as a professional gambler?
"C'mon," he said with an impish smile. "Don't you think I know how to bluff?"
Having seen him manipulate people on "Survivor: Marquesas," "Survivor: All Stars" and "Amazing Race," maybe he is cut out for this. Mariano and his wife, fellow "Survivor" survivor Amber (Brkich) Mariano, move to Las Vegas and he pursues his dream on "Rob & Amber: Against the Odds."
Rob and Amber      "It's 'The Rob and Amber Show' with a twist," Amber said. "It's something he really wants to do, and it's better than a lot of the shows we've been pitched."
Of course, it is "a little scary" because Mariano is gambling with his own money. Or their own money, won on the other reality shows.
Amber, who finished sixth on "Survivor: The Australian Outback" and won "Survivor: All-Stars" — and accepted Rob's marriage proposal in the "All-Stars" finale — and Rob had been pursued to appear in everything from talk shows to home-improvement/decorating shows.
"This is something different," he said. "We're used to the cameras, so that was no big deal. And this is something fun."
The 10-part series debuts Thursday at 10 p.m. on the Fox Reality Channel (which is available only on some cable and satellite systems).
We saw them fall in love on "Survivor." We saw them get married in a two-hour, prime-time TV special. We saw them as newlyweds on "The Amazing Race" and now on this new show.
So could the next logical step in Rob and Amber reality shows be ... parenthood?
"That's the first question everybody asks," Amber said. "Of course, we want to have children. But not necessarily right now."
"We're young. There's plenty of time for kids someday," Rob said.
And what about rumors that Rob and Amber might be part of the "Amazing Race: All-Stars" that begins airing in February? Well ... CBS is still keeping that cast list a secret. Stay tuned.

It seems fitting that this show will be on (and forgive me for swearing) Fox Reality.

variety review of the show

Rob and Amber: Against the Odds
 (Series -- Fox Reality; Thurs. Jan. 11, 8 p.m.)
Produced by Ellman Entertainment. Executive producers, Linda Ellman, Rob George, Chris Meindl, Rob Mariano; segment producer, Stacey Fargnoli; writers, Meindl, Donna Trujillo.

The truly telling moment in "Survivor" newlyweds Rob and Amber Mariano's latest TV sojourn comes near the outset of this half-hour series, when he mumbles, "I can't go back to a 9-to-5 job after what I've been through." Nope, after two bouts of "Survivor" (meeting on the all-star edition) followed by "The Amazing Race" and their televised nuptials, these two apparently are destined to live out their days on TV, even if that means fabricating a career for Rob that weds him to another marketable trend: Poker. Die-hard fans might welcome the reunion, but rest assured, there's little "reality" here.
To its credit, as un-reality series go, "Rob and Amber: Against the Odds" is more upfront than most, listing two writers among its crew. Yet even with that concession, it's hard to suspend disbelief long enough to have a moment's doubt as to whether a skeptical Amber will relent and support Rob's dream of moving to Las Vegas to become a professional poker player. The fix is in, after all, strictly based on the title.

Nevertheless, the series goes through the motions of trying to establish drama, as the two argue in the kitchen while Amber looks pouty and concerned. Indeed, the show is so scripted as to undermine any sense of reality, to the point where, when Amber's mom suggests she take a walk on the beach and think things over, the show immediately cuts to her doing just that, trying to look pensive.

As for Boston Rob, who never met a consonant he couldn't mangle (and doubles as one of the producers), there's something almost poetic about his plight: Having become famous appearing on one of TV's big guns, to stay in the spotlight he has taken refuge on the less-widely-seen Fox Reality -- currently available in roughly a quarter of U.S. homes -- seemingly dragging the missus along for the ride.

So it's off to Vegas, where Rob receives tips from a poker ace even less adept at pretending there aren't cameras around, laying down tough ground rules like no beer drinking when playing high-stakes poker.

Teases for upcoming episodes flash by at the conclusion, but it's easy enough to anticipate the beats without looking: The couple's marriage will be tested, Vegas will offer all kinds of glitz and glamour, and Rob will furrow his brow while trying to swim among more seasoned card sharks.

Win or lose, it's pretty clear Rob and Amber will find a way to stay in the public eye, whatever the odds. Because as he says, after what they've been through, what else could they possibly do?

Well I thought I quite liked Romber but even this 20 minute show was more than I could take.

The whole thing was horribly fake, I mean why would you invite a camera crew along to film a show about going to Vegas to play poker if you hadn't decided to do it already?

They should have credited us with more intelligence and not gone through that whole fake setup thing for 20 minutes - and gone right into it. I might have carried on watching if they'd done that, as it is - I don't think so!
