DAY #7:
SITE: EVERGREEN LODGE AT YOSEMITE, YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CA
TIME: 10.00 AM

Phil Keoghan: Designers, your time is up! We will commence the Design Showcase soon.

Before I start revealing all of your designs to the viewers, let me first introduce you to our guest judge in this round.

This person is well known in the Reality Fan Forum, as well as the Design Challenge series. Having won his first season back in Season 5, he continued to be a judge in Season 6, and then joined as one of the hosts of Season 7.

I think some of you already recognized him by now. So, without much waiting, please welcome...

For your information, gamerfan09 will be our guest judge not only for this round, but also for some future rounds as well. So that's one more person you have to impress other than our three main judges.

~~~
Phil Keoghan: Now that we've introduced our guest judge, let's proceed to the main event.
I would like no posting or interruption until I finish. I will be showcasing them by regions, to not confuse the viewers as well.
Without further ado, let's begin the Design Showcase!
Note: I will post the designs in this order and color:
West - Sea Green
Midwest - Tomato
South - Slate Blue
Northeast - Goldenrod
Design #1 - Leafsfan
[Hagerman & Twin Falls, Idaho]
Show content
Round 1: The Grand American Finale
Phil: This is Tokyo, Japan, the world's largest metropolis. In the heart of this conglomeration, is Tokyo Skytree, the tallest building in the city. This tower served as the 11th pitstop across the world and the final three teams will depart from here to their final destination.
Saul/Carrie: Fly to Boise, Idaho!, once there choose one of the parked cars in the parking lot and drive 96 miles to Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument in the town of Hagerman, Idaho. You have $95 for this leg of the race.
Phil: All teams are on the same flight to Boise Idaho.
Phil: These grounds are famous for fossils of many prehistoric animals, but none more famous than the Hagerman Horse, which is the state fossil of Idaho. This prehistoric animal was first discovered in Idaho and is among the oldest horse species in the world ever discovered. In this task, teams must build a replica skeleton model of the Hagerman Horse. Once the skeleton is built exactly like the model, teams will receive their next clue along from the park ranger.
Phil: Teams must drive themselves 34 miles to the Centennial Waterfront Park in the town of Twin Falls, Idaho, once there teams need to locate the AWOL booth to get their next clue.
Who has a good memory? Phil: In this roadblock, the chosen team member must complete a zipline course (that consists of four lines). At the end of each line, the team member will be asked a question from the race by their tour guide. If they get it correct they can continue. If they are wrong, they must continue to guess until they are right. Once complete teams will receive their next clue. Here is a quick video with some of the zip-lining.
Phil:Drive yourselves five miles to the Lamb Weston Potato Factory in Twin Falls, and find your next clue at the entrance to the factory.
Phil: Idaho is known for its potatoes. In this task teams will be pay homage to the industry. Teams must now pack 20 ten pound bags equally among the various types of potatoes processed (Russet, Red, Fingerling and Yukon Gold) at this plant (five bags per type). Once teams have sorted the potatoes and weighed them to the ten pounds per bag, they must transport the bags to the shipping docks. Once the bags are correctly packed and transported to the dock, teams will receive their clue.
Phil:Drive yourselves eight miles to the Twin Falls Fairgrounds in the town of Filer.
Now, who really has a good memory? Note: The team member who did not do the zip-lining roadblock, MUST do this one. Phil: Idaho’s state nickname Is the “gem state”. The team member must look through the fairgrounds for the various stalls to locate 12 gems that were encountered during the race.  Once they have the 12 gems, they must place them in order of when they were encountered. Once placed in order correctly, teams will be given their next clue by the fairgrounds worker. Note: The 12 gems are native/found mostly/named after in the locations they were used in.
Leg 1: United States to Peru
Start line Task: Asked them to bring back a piece of realgar, one of the two colours on the Peruvian flag.
Leg 2: Peru
Pitstop greeter was wearing an elaborate necklace made up of augelite.
Leg 3: Peru to Brazil
Route info task required teams to sell two pieces of brazilianite to get their next clue.
Leg 4: Brazil to Mozambique
The person handing out the clues on both sides of the detour will be wearing a hat full of tourmaline.
Leg 5: Mozambique to Spain
A route info task in this leg required teams to deliver bags of sphalerite from one location to another.
Leg 6: Spain to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Pitstop greeter was wearing an elaborate necklace made up of hyalophane.
Leg 7: Bosnia and Herzegovina to Bulgaria
At the detour clue pickup/decision point, there were drummers, and the drums were decorated in cleiophane
Leg 8: Bulgaria to Tajikistan
Both sides of the detour had teams doing tasks at a Tajik wedding, the decorations were full of sogdianite, which is used by Tajiks to flaunt their wealth.
Leg 9: Tajikistan to Sri Lanka
A route info task required teams to decorate an elephant. Part of the decorations included ekanite.
Leg 10: Sri Lanka
At the beginning of the leg, teams are blessed by a Hindu priest, who gives them a piece of taaffeite, which is a good luck charm in the country.
Leg 11: Sri Lanka to Japan
The pitstop greeter's clothes had nambulite on it.
Leg 12: Japan to United States
The Park ranger at the fossil task had ludlamite as part of their uniform.
This is it! Go! Go! Go! Drive yourselves 14 miles to the final pitstop, Shoshone Falls.
1) Flight from Tokyo to Boise (click the image to increase size):
2) The Fossil beds are mostly closed to tourists, and the website directs people to the visitor center (away from the park). The park is a stunning landscape, and I wanted to incorporate it into this leg. This would take a request/permit to film (which won't be hard to acquire)
3) For the skeleton task, three different stations will be provided at the entrance to the park. There will be a replica model of the horse in the center of the three stations. This is an attention to detail task! As per this source, models are about 60-65 bones. The picture above is approximately the size of the replica teams need to build. Source
4) The AWOL booth is in the parking lot of the park. The zip-lining setup/safety occurs here.
5) The four questions (one per line) are as follows: 1) What was the detour you chose on Leg 6? 2) Name your leg placements in order for the first 5 legs. 3) The city of __ was visited on which leg? 4) How many countries did you visit (excluding the USA). The blank is there intentionally, as we have not planned a full route yet.
6) The potato task requires team to correctly pack the bags with the correct potatoes.
7) The final task has a mock route, the gems can be changed if needed to other countries.
8 ) Gems would be placed in 15 of the fair stalls (three would be false) here is a map of the fairgrounds. Once the 12 gems are found they must go to their workstation in the service area. In the service area, there will be a board divided into 12 sections and labelled leg 1, leg 2, and so on. The team member must place one gem per leg. Here is a map of the fairgrounds.
9) Maps are here: From Boise Airport to Fossil Park and the rest of the leg.
10) There is a possibility of a footrace at the pitstop. Teams must park their car and proceed on foot to the pitstop. Please see here for a map.
11) All gem information is from here.
12) Teams were given $95 for this leg, because it costs approximately $85 USD for a taxi from Skytree to Haneda airport. The rest of the leg is self driving, and the money left over is for gas if needed, and teams would have had to conserve from the previous legs.
Final thoughts: This is a driving intense leg, which can lead to chaos if teams get lost. This is why I limited it to four tasks overall. I tried to get variety of tasks on the race. The tasks are physical, memory team work, and high adrenaline. I feel its important to have a mix of tasks, so the best team does win. I also incorporated tasks related with things Idaho is known for, and all four tasks represent what Idaho is known for globally.
1. first of all, Thank you for the judges to give me the chance to play for this game the second time of asking, and to pay attention for my design of this leg
2. I originally planned for a leg of a rural area near Seattle (because i love Seattle :funny: ), but i didnt have any idea at all for the final leg at all, so when i read Hawaii as a state to design for the leg, my first thought for the leg was "Flower Lei as the final task" and it sold me right away.
3. All of the teams will get the same flight to ensure the fairness for the final leg. also they will take the charter taxi troughout the leg, and they won't be allowed to change the taxi unless emergency situation happened. the taxi fares will be paid by producers
4. 20$ is for the extra cash if something happened and they have to purchase something
5. the local audiences are added to give more challenge for the roadblock performer, since they have to overcome the stage freight during the task. there will be 50 audiences filled in into auditorium
6. the pole for the boat task will have lenght of 180 cm. and the flag has been stitched, so they just have to focus on assembling the boat. Pay attention to the detail can be frightening tho :funny:
7. they will use fake flowers for the lei task, since it's impossible to supply the real flowers since of the humidity of Hawaii, logistic stuffs, and some flowers may be expensivee too
8. a box will contain of 32 flowers, so it will be enough to them to craft more in case some of them are broken or missing during the crafting.
9. there are three stations on tree climbing task so no need for first come first serve.
10. For the final task, the leis will be put into a pole on the table, and the label on the pole will be the country flag insteadd of letters/words
11. The box of flowers won't have the label, so the roadblock performer will have to find out themselves which flower is needed by opening the box.
12. For the lei task, the performer wont't be allowed to take the notes
13. They will be only in Honolulu for the landing, after that they will have to go to the CDP area of Laie, to fulfill the requirement
ROUND 1
*This is the Harborland, a shopping and entertainment district on the banks of the Osaka Bay in Kōbe, Japan. And located in the center of the district in front of the CULMENI (Kōbe Information & Culture) building is a monument dedicated to the late Elvis Presley. In 2009, when the "Love Me Tender" store in Tokyo closed, the statue needed a new home and was moved to Kōbe, as the city is known for its love of music and is considered to be the birthplace of jazz in Japan. Today, the monument is the starting point for the final leg of the Amazing Race.*
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/mYKE0q49jiU" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/mYKE0q49jiU</a>
All teams will leave the pit stop between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM.
Clue: Say good bye to Elvis as you head back to the United States but one of his prized possessions holds your next clue. Find his 1962 Lockheed JetStar 6 airplane and the clue inside it. You have $575 for this leg of the race.
Teams will have to figure out that this jet has been sitting empty for over 30 years in the Roswell Aircraft Boneyard, located at the Roswell International Air Center. Teams may have also noticed that 575, the amount of money received for this leg of the race is the area code of Roswell and much of Eastern New Mexico.
<a href="https://youtube.com/v/K21WZK3Zck0" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://youtube.com/v/K21WZK3Zck0</a>
All teams traveled from Kōbe to Osaka's Kansai International airport via taxi (approximately $200 USD) and were on the same set of flights to Roswell.
**There is a long layover in Dallas but it allows for them to rest and for production to put them up a nice hotel at DFW for the night before an early flight to Roswell and a full day of racing. :lol:**
Upon arriving in Roswell, New Mexico and retrieving the clue at Elvis' jetstar:
Clue: Find the marked 2020 Toyota Land Cruisers in the airport parking lot and drive yourself to the International UFO Museum and Research Center. Retrieve your next clue from the aliens inside the main enterance.
The town of Roswell (population 48,366) was made famous by the UFO incident of 1947, where a US Army Air Forces balloon crashed in the nearby village of Corona. Rampant speculation that this balloon was a "flying disc" spread and conspirators believe that the military found the UFO and has been covering it up ever since. Today, Roswell's tourism industry is heavily based on aerospace engineering and ufology museums and businesses, as well as alien-themed and spacecraft-themed iconography.
At the UFO Museum:
In this roadblock, the chosen team member will have to go into the UFO Spacewalk and search their surroundings inside it for the location of their next clue. If they complete it without finding the location, they will have go back to the beginning and search through it again. Each trip through could take up to an additional 5-10 minutes. If they are correct, they can leave and drive to the next clue.
Clue (at 0:55 of the first video):
The team member doing the roadblock will have to figure out that the text is above is what they are looking for. Once they do so, teams can drive to Trinity, which is the site of the worlds first nuclear bomb test, conducted by the US Army in 1945 as part of the Manhattan Project. Today, the site is part of the White Sands Missile Range, so when teams get there, they will be accompanied by US military personnel to enter. Teams are looking for the obelisk at the Trinity Site ground zero, where their next clue awaits.
The team member will have to roll out the dough, stuff, and fry 10 sopapillas. The catch is that the each sopapilla will have a different stuffing, one specific to the cuisine of a country previously visited on the race. There will additional stuffings to choose from so if the team member picks a wrong one, they will have to remake it. Design #6 - Stone
[Black Hills, South Dakota]
Show content
This is Haarlem, Netherlands. At one time, the pre-medieval center of North Holland. Haarlem’s status as a small, bedroom community allowed its medieval architecture to remain intact over centuries of development and war, including its towering cathedral of Grote Kerk, the 11th pitstop in a race around the world.
Teams depart between 4:30 am and 5:45 am.
Clue: Fly to Rapid City, South Dakota, the gateway to South Dakota’s famous Black Hills. You’ll find your next clue waiting for you in the marked cars outside the airport. You have $130 for this leg of the race.
Teams are provided tickets on Delta flights departing Amsterdam at 10:15 am, connecting in Detroit & Minneapolis, and arriving in Rapid City at 8:51 am the following morning.
Clue: Drive 52 miles to Lead-Deadwood, South Dakota and search for your next clue on Deadwood's Main Street.
Deadwood was a large boomtown of the Dakota territory gold rush of the 1870’s, attracting iconic wild west figures like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill. Deadwood is a National Historic Landmark District for its well-preserved Gold-Rush era frontier architecture.
Roadblock: Who wants to hoist down the mine?
Locate the town’s former gold mine: Sanford Underground Laboratory and locate the hoist room. This former mine produced 41 million ounces of gold before being converted into the United States’ deepest underground laboratory and has gone on to make numerous groundbreaking discoveries in physics. In this roadblock, one team member will have to construct a model hoist. The hoists here at the lab were built in the 1930’s for the mine and are vital to the lab’s mission today, allowing any material, equipment, and essentials to be transported 4,850 feet underground to the lab with simple mechanics built almost a century ago. Once they can successfully lift and lower a bucket with their model hoist, the researcher will give teams their next clue.
Clue: Drive yourselves 53 miles to the Cathedral of the Black Hills and search for your next clue. Teams need to figure out the Cathedral in question is the Cathedral Spires rock formation in Custer State Park.
Roadblock: who can handle the cat’s meow?
Cat’s meow is the name of one of the climbing routes here at the 75 peaks of the Cathedral Spires. The geological formations here in the Black Hills are considered the best granite climbing sites in the world and attract climbers from around the globe every year. In this roadblock, one team member will have to follow the Cat’s Meow route to the peak of Spire 3. At the summit, they can retrieve their next clue and the flag of the Oglala Lakota Tribe and repel down the other side of the spire to their partner. The team member who did not perform the last roadblock at the Sanford Lab must complete this one.
Clue: Drive 52 miles to the Red Shirt Community on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Once there, receive your next clue from Julian Bear Runner, the current chief of the Oglala Lakota tribe.
Task: Teams must now work together to set up and decorate an Oglala Lakota tipi. The tipi has become stereotypically and incorrectly associated with all Native Americans across North America but was traditionally and most notably used by the tribes of the Dakota’s including the Oglala Lakota. Pay respect to the heritage of the tribe by setting up a ceremonial tipi beside Red Shirt Creek according to the diagram. Once complete, plant your flag from Cathedral Spires outside your tipi and Julian Bear Runner will give teams their final clue.
Clue: Donate all your remaining money to the Pine Ridge Reservation and race 8 miles to the finish line: Red Shirt Table. This plateau is surrounded on all sides by the stunning buttes of South Dakota’s Badlands. The first team to cross the finish line here overlooking the Badlands will win $1 million!
Notes for judges
Good morning/afternoon/evening judges! Thank you for organizing the revival of the DC and allow me to flesh out and explain elements of my design further:
  • Rapid City has a population of 67,000 but no tasks take place there, its just our arrival airport. The rest of the locations are positively rural with the largest city visited being Deadwood with a population of 1,270.
  • The hoist roadblock is a nice bait and switch. Team's visit an old frontier town with gold mines, and instead of something more stereotypical like panning for gold, they're actually going to a groundbreaking physics laboratory. The lab was where neutrino particles were discovered, among other discoveries, and is in the process of becoming the receiving end of particles shot 800 miles underground from Fermilab in Illinois. Constructing hoists is a task performed by students on field trips to the lab so it should be plenty doable for our teams. Helps make the leg less stereotypical.
  • The cat's meow climbing route is nearly a 200 foot climb, but with 3 points to stop and rest along the way it's quite manageable and should be doable for all teams. Also allows for strategy for the team member to decide how long they want to rest. The climbing task helps fills the quota for a TAR finale's obligatory extreme task but is relevant to the location as the Black Hills are said to have the best granite climbing in the world. It's stunningly beautiful as well.
  • The Pine Ridge Reservation is the most impoverished area in the U.S. with 99% of people living in poverty, hence donating money. I would've liked the teams to donate their time rather than money, but volunteer projects on the reservation are all based around construction of items like beds, wheelchair ramps, and homes and would be redundant with the hoist building roadblock. Instead, I decided to educate and help reclaim a symbol of the Oglala Lakota that has become mistakenly generalized to all native people. In my episode, I'd also have a card come up at the end informing viewers how they can donate their time and money to the Oglala Lakota tribe.
  • I intentionally steered far clear of Mount Rushmore. It's an affront to the native people who's land it was seized and carved upon and has a problematic and racist history. No need to feature that on the race. Also steered clear of the Crazy Horse memorial, a similar mountain carving to Mount Rushmore. Many native people consider it an affront to their beliefs as well and the beliefs of Crazy Horse.
  • $130 for the leg= $20 for admission to Custer's State Park, home of the Cathedral Spires + $60, the price of two full tanks of gas in SD ($2.50/gal) + $50 a little extra to sweeten the pot for the Pine Ridge donations.
  • Lots of self driving, a big plus in my book. Also sets up for the teams to reach the finish line around sunset over the Badlands, absolutely beautiful.
Design #7 - Lemontail
[Mackinac Island, Michigan]
Show content
Leg 12: Easter Island, Chile → Mackinac Island, United States
This is Easter Island, Chile. A Chilean island in middle of Southern Pacific Ocean, this island is famous for its moai statues scattered around the island and its isolation, with the island being hundreds of miles away from any nearest land.
This is Anakena, a white coral sand beach in northern Easter Island. This beach is famous for its beauty and has two ahu stone plaftorms containing moai statues. This beach now serves as the eleventh Pit Stop of the race.
The finalists are: Lara & Anaya, Nathan & Elena, and Nick & Ellis.
The first team to check in, archaeologists and friends Lara & Anaya, will depart at 9:09 am.
Married treasure hunters Nathan & Elena will depart at 9:23 am.
Newlyweds Nick & Ellis will depart at 9:47 am.
Route Info: Fly to the fudge capital of the world
Teams have to figure out that they have to fly 5,300 miles (8,500 km) to the fudge capital of the world, Mackinac Island, Michigan, United States.
Mackinac Island is an island, a small city, and a resort area located in the Straits of Mackinac between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and it is famous for its history, architecture, beauty, fudges, and almost-absence of motor vehicles, with the island residents and visitors being dependent on bikes, horse carriages, and other non-motor vehicles to get around the island.
All teams flew on the same flight to Mackinac Island via Santiago, Miami, Detroit, and Pellston. After arriving in Pellston, teams traveled by taxi to St. Ignace for an overnight stay. The next morning, teams eventually boarded a ferry to Mackinac Island.
Once there, teams must make their way by foot to Mackinac Island State Harbor. You have US$146 for this leg.
Mackinac Island State Harbor is a marina serving Mackinac Island. It is one of the designated Clear Marinas, a voluntary compliance program that stresses good environmental and management practices that exceed minimum regulatory requirements in marinas.
Roadblock: Who’s the tier?
Boating is the primary way to get in or out of Mackinac Island, due to its nature of being an island, aside from a small airport that’s barely used. Thus, boats are well-woven into the culture of Mackinac Island.
In this Roadblock, a team member must hop on into a group of 12 small rowboats representing legs visited on the race with the colors representing the flags of the countries visited on the race. The boats are connected together via a rope, but are ordered incorrectly, so they must rearrange the boats according to the order of the leg represented. A sailor will assess the entire task. If the sailor judges that their order are correct, they may receive their next clue.
Additional note:
Show content
The boats are in different colors, representing the flag colors of the countries they’ve visited. There are 12 rowboats just off coast the island and they’re in a straight line. They must re-tie the boats in order of the legs represented, after that they may jump into another boat to retie another boat again by rowing the boat to get to the desired boat, similar to doing a U-Turn on sea. Retying the boat are done by removing the tie from a mooring pole on the boat, and retying the mooring tie with another tie connected to origin boat, then they can use the removed tie to tie another boat. All boats are ordered incorrectly in the same way, so no one has a clear advantage. This task tests a person’s stamina, fitness, and memory.
Route Info: Make your way by foot to May’s Candy Shop
May’s Candy Shop is a candy store that also specializes in making fudges and is the oldest fudge shop in Mackinac Island, having been operated by four generations. It is only the fudge shop in Mackinac Island that has been visited by an American president.
Additional note:
Show content
There are two locations of May's Candy Shop. These locations are near each other, on same street (Main Street), and visible to each other. Visit the one that doesn't sit in a street corner.
Active Route Info: Make and deliver fudges to several historic hotels in Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is famous for its fudges. Fudge is a type of sugar candy that is made by mixing sugar, butter and milk. Fudge shops in Mackinac Island make roughly 10,000 pounds of fudge each season.
In this Active Route Info, teams must witness fudge-making process, then proceed to make their own fudge to be delivered to their next clue location. Once they have successfully made their fudge, they have to deliver pre-made fudges to several historic hotels in Mackinac Island via bikes. If done successfully, they may receive their next clue from a baker once they return to the shop, but they also must deliver their own self-made fudges to their next clue location.
Additional note:
Show content
One thing, is that they aren’t provided hotel names nor their addresses, only the pictures of a small detail of their architecture, as Mackinac Island is known for its Victorian architecture (and other architectural styles like Colonial and Federalist) adorned into its buildings. This forces teams to look into buildings and note their architecture, as they cannot ask other people for help.
Route Info: Make your way by bike to Grand Hotel Stables
Grand Hotel Stables is a stable used to house horse carriages for tours and also functions as a museum detailing about horse carriages, the primary means of transport in Mackinac Island until 20th century. It is owned by the Grand Hotel, which is around 440 yards (400 m) away from here.
Active Route Info: Assemble and disassemble horse carriages
Horse carriages were the primary means of transport in Mackinac Island for most of their existence until 20th century, where they were outnumbered by bikes. They still remain as one of the modes of transport in Mackinac Island.
In this Active Route Info, teams must assemble a horse carriage, built exactly according to a provided manual. One thing, is that they also must disassemble another horse carriage exactly according to a provided manual. Once they have completed the steps to assembling and disassembling a horse carriage correctly and the coachman is satisfied, they may receive their next clue.
Route Info: Make your way by bike to British Landing
British Landing is a historical place where the British and Indian forces made their way into Mackinac Island during the war of 1812, when a war broke out between the United States and United Kingdom. During the war, Lt. Porter Hanks, commander of the American garrison of 57 soldiers, had no known that war had been declared and then realized that resistance was hopeless, so Hanks capitulated without a fight.
Roadblock: Who’s the spotter?
Mackinac Island is the bicycle capital of the world, with 85,000 bicycles licensed despite its small population of less than 500 people. That means there are 170 bikes for every year-round resident, with other bikes reserved for the visitors. It is also a primary means of transport in Mackinac Island, with horse carriages and other types of transport being outnumbered by bikes.
In this Roadblock, a team member must bike their bicycle around northern Mackinac Island starting and ending in British Landing to spot flags of Mackinac Island and the former or historical flags of countries they visited on the race. Once done, they must arrange the flags they encountered on the bike journey on order of the legs they appeared on by moving the flags on their assigned bulletin board and then type a passcode on a safe box below their assigned bulletin board that corresponds to the number of flags spotted so they can unlock the safe box which contains their next clue.
NOTE: For whose did not perform the first Roadblock, MUST perform this Roadblock.
Additional note:
Show content
The flags have been noted in every first clue in every leg that doesn’t start in same country detailing about where are they going, shown in the bottom of the clue. Teams will be given a route map for them to follow on to search and spot flags via their bikes. They are very obscurely hidden, and sometimes hidden in plain sight, and there are several numbers of the same flags. One thing, is that they have a 20-minute limit to search and spot, as passing over the limit results in a 5-minute penalty, so they must return to British Landing as soon as possible before the time limit ends and then they can restart the search again. After they’ve completed the bike journey, they must go to their assigned bulletin board to arrange the flags in order of the country they visited and also answer how many former flags of each countries they’ve encountered on the bike journey by typing a passcode in a safe box below the bulletin board. If they’re not sure about the amount, they can search and spot again. A soldier will oversee the task. If they successfully unlock the safe box, they will find their next clue in there. This task tests a person's stamina, fitness, detail-spotting, and memory ability.
Route Info: Make your way by bike to the Finish Line at Fort Holmes
Fort Holmes is a fort that was built after the British and their allies captured Fort Mackinac during the War of 1812, and they quickly built a small outpost and called it Fort George. When the Americans regained the Fort by treaty at the end of the War of 1812, it was renamed Fort Holmes after the American Major Andrew Hunter Holmes who succumbed to wounds during a futile attempt to retake the Fort from the British in 1814.
This fort will now serve as the Finish Line of The Amazing Race. The first team to check in here will win US$1 million and The Amazing Race. Everyone is awaiting for you!
• All teams departed Pit Start on July 22 and flew on July 22 and 23 via Santiago, Miami, Detroit, and Pellston.
• All teams took off on foot (a 3-minute walk) from Hotel Oceania Rapa Nui, which is near to the airport.
• After arriving in Pellston, Michigan (a small village of 830 people, complete with a regional airport), all teams, per clue, were instructed to take a 35-minute taxi to Thunderbird Moter Inn in St. Ignace, Michigan (a small city of 2,400 people), for an overnight stay since ferries to Mackinac Island doesn’t usually depart much later than 8:30 PM, so they must wait until tomorrow on July 24. The taxi journey costs around $84.
• The next morning, teams take off on foot to the dock where Star Line Ferries are waiting to transport between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. They took a 7:30 am ferry, arriving around 20-35 minutes later.
• The ferry from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island via Star Line costs around $29 per person.
• $146 should be enough to cover the costs of this leg. The teams all started the leg with no money, having donated all of their money to help cover the costs of restoring an Easter Island moai last leg.
• It took about 4 minutes for teams to walk from the ferry dock to the marina.
• For the first Roadblock, it goes like this: You row your origin boat to your desired boat, the ropes (connected to a small bollard in every bow and stern of each boat) are long enough to cover distance between 12 boats, then you remove the rope connecting the bow (front) of desired boat to the stern (back) of another boat, then using that rope to connect to the rope-less bow of your origin boat (so that it is connected to the stern of another boat), then remove the rope from the stern of your origin boat, then using that rope to connect the bow of your desired boat. After this, you may return to the most-front boat to do it all over again by hopping on these boats. I estimate this would take at least an hour or more. There are pictures below to help you give a detail on how this works.
• The boats are located in a bay off Mackinac Island State Harbor to protect them from currents.
• I chose May's Candy Shop because of its history, being the first fudge shop in Mackinac Island and former president Gerald Ford also once visited it in 1970s.
• It took about 5 minutes for teams to walk from the marina to May's Candy Shop.
• The bikes are provided by production at May’s Candy Shop.
• The fudge making took about 4 hours. Teams only witnessed essential portions of fudge making which took about twenty minutes. They are aided by a manual for further instructions, instead.
• With 3 hours (out of 4 hours at the shop) spent waiting fudges to cool, this time is used for teams to deliver pre-made fudges. Which still took at least an hour, since they also had to find and sort fudges to each box in a fudge storage room, which takes at least an hour.
• The hotels teams must find are: Hotel Iroquois, Chippewa Hotel, Island House Hotel, Main Street Inn, and Grand Hotel.
• Each team took five boxes of fudges, with each box containing 12 fudges.
• The teams should take about 6 minutes or so inside every hotel for every hotel to receive the fudges.
• The fudge delivering route takes about 12 minutes or so, if they already know every hotel to find, not including the return route (varies according to which the last hotels each team went to, 2-5 minutes on bike or so) and time spent inside each hotel.
• The delivering task should take about half an hour or more depending on how teams find the hotels.
• Teams aren’t given the hotels’ addresses nor their names for the fudge ARI. They are instead given a route map to follow and pictures of the details of their architecture. They have to note the hotels’ architecture to find them. The photos for them are listed below. This task would take at least half an hour or more for delivering.
• I chose British Landing because it is where foreign troops landed on Mackinac Island during the War of 1812, so it’d make sense to teams to search for Mackinac Island and the United States flags but also flags of foreign countries starting from there.
• Teams are given a route map to follow on to search and spot flags on their bikes, so they don't get lost easily and makes the task a bit easier.
• For the second Roadblock, the flags are mixed with present-day flags of some countries, which some of them look similar (like Australia, Maldives, Turkey, and the United States for example), so teams must spot the differences, making the task harder.
• The flags are from 10 countries visited on the race and is listed below (in spoilers). This is not definitely a luck-based task.
• The flags are noted on below of the first clue opened on every leg. The first leg had 2 flags, one for United States and one for Morocco. Every other leg had one picture of a flag on below of the first clue, with the last one having a picture of the flag of Mackinac Island. The last one had ‘Mackinac Island’ tagline removed from the flag to keep the destination cryptic.
• The flags are either hanged or put on trees, bushes, buildings, signs, and rocks.
• The biking route for the Roadblock takes about 15 minutes (including return to British Landing), so they have 5 minutes to intensively spot around. I estimate this would take about an hour or so.
• There are 50 correct flags to spot, representing 50 stars (and states of the United States) on the flag of the United States. The flags are: 3 for the United States, 5 for Morocco, 4 (each two representing Venice and Naples) for Italy, 6 for Turkey, 5 for Lebanon, 6 for Maldives, 5 for Australia, 3 for Argentina, 4 for Peru, 6 for Chile, and 3 for Mackinac Island. The 12-digit passcode is 3-5-2-2-6-5-6-5-3-4-6-3.
• In case a team gets stuck in this task well into night, every flag has a light to illuminate them.
• The bulletin board (one for each team) is custom-made with a safe box below it.
• The Finish Line is located in the big grass behind Fort Holmes, intersecting with the V-shaped trail intersection, as seen on map below (in spoilers).
• Overall, this leg should take at least more than six hours and end in late afternoon.
• I chose Mackinac Island because it has significant culture and history (and beautiful in summer), so it’d make sense to showcase it.
• Mackinac Island is also a very small city that has a population of less than 500, so it fits the definition of a rural area.
Leg 12 (Chile → United States)
Easter Island (Mataveri International Airport) to Pellston, Michigan , United States (Pellston Regional Airport)
• Pellston (Pellston Regional Airport) to St. Ignace (Thunderbird Motor Inn) (overnight stay)
St. Ignace (Star Line Ferry Dock – Dock #2) to Mackinac Island (Star Line Ferry Dock – Island Dock #1)
• Mackinac Island (Mackinac Island State Harbor)
• Mackinac Island (May’s Candy Shop)
• Mackinac Island (Grand Hotel Stables)
• Mackinac Island (British Landing)
• Mackinac Island (Fort Holmes)
In the first Roadblock, a team member had to hop on a small rowboat, then rearrange a group of 12 rowboats connected together via a rope that is installed on each boat’s bow and stern as each boats had a color that corresponds to a country’s flag, thus representing the leg where the color of the boat corresponded to the flag of the country visited on the Race. Once done, they would receive their next clue from a sailor.
In the final Roadblock of the Race, a team member had to bike around a predetermined route in northern Mackinac Island to search and spot flags of Mackinac Island and the former/historical flags of the countries visited on the Race, then return to type a passcode in their assigned bulletin board that corresponds to the number of flags spotted, on order of the countries (and legs for Italy) visited. If they aren’t sure about the amount, they can return to search and spot again. A soldier will oversee the task. Once done, they would have a 12-digit passcode needed to unlock the safe box, which contains their next clue.
The passcode for the safe box were: 3-5-2-2-6-5-6-5-3-4-6-3.
Additional tasks
• At May’s Candy Shop, teams had to witness the process of making fudges, then proceed to make their own fudges to be delivered to their next clue location. They also had to deliver pre-made fudges to several historic hotels located around Mackinac Island via bikes. They are only given a route map to follow and a picture detailing their architecture, therefore teams had to look at the buildings for a match. Once done, they must return to shop to receive their next clue from a baker.
• At Grand Hotel Stables, after delivering their own self-made fudges to a coachman, teams had to assemble a horse carriage and disassemble another horse carriage exactly according to a provided manual. Once done correctly, a coachman would give teams their next clue.
Phil Keoghan: Only when the campground manager is satisfied that teams have set up the camp to his high standards, will he hand teams their next clue!
Route Info: Follow the marked route and drive yourselves to Crescent Lake!
Phil Keoghan: Teams must once again follow the yellow and red flags to Crescent Lake. This lake has a surface area of 774 acres and has a depth of 9 metres.
Phil Keoghan: Once teams arrive at the Lake, they must find the Boat Launching Area, where teams will search among the boats for a marked Race boat and then locate the skipper on-board the Deck, who has the team’s next clue!
Roadblock: Who has good balance?
Phil Keoghan: As with all Roadblocks, a Roadblock is a task which only team member can perform. In the penultimate Roadblock of the Race, one team member must learn how to waterski!
Phil Keoghan: Once the team member has managed to skim over the body of water for two straight minutes without falling into the water, they will receive their next clue.
Phil Keoghan: However, if team members do anything unsafe, which could present a possible danger to themselves or everyone else in the water, the challenge will immediately be stopped and the team will need to serve a 4-hour penalty at the Finish Line!
Route Info: Drive yourselves to the base of Eagle Mountain. When you arrive, hike to the top and collect pictures of the Race along the way!
Phil Keoghan: Teams must now drive themselves to the base of Eagle Mountain. Eagle Mountain, at 2,301 feet high, is the highest natural point in the state of Minnesota.
Phil Keoghan: While teams hike to the top, they will need to collect pictures of their eleven previous Pit Stops along the way in the Race, which one team member will use in the final challenge of the Race!
Roadblock:Who has an elephant’s memory?
NOTE: If you did the water-ski Road Block, then your partner MUST do this one!
Phil Keoghan: In the final Roadblock of the Race, one team member must use the photos they collected during the last Active Route Marker and place the pictures in order!
Phil Keoghan: Once teams have placed the pictures of their previous Pit Stops in the correct chronological order, a park ranger will give the team their final clue!
Route Info: This is it! Drive yourselves to the Finish Line, located at the Grand Portage National Monument!
Note: The first team to cross the Finish Line, will win $1,000,000
Phil Keoghan: Teams must now drive themselves to the Finish Line, located at the Grand Portage National Monument!
Phil Keoghan: This United States National Monument is located on the north shore of Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota and preserves a vital center of fur trade activity and Anishinaabeg Ojibwe heritage. Today, it plays host to the Finish Line, of our most amazing race around the world!
Phil Keoghan: The first team to cross the Finish Line, will win the grand prize of $1,000,000 and The Amazing Race!
DESIGNER NOTES
Hello judges! I really hope you enjoyed this leg! Even though this leg was actually quite hard to make (it took me almost a full week to complete the leg!), I had a lot of fun designing this leg! I've included tasks that I have done myself, such as water-skiing and camping (which I will never do again)! I sincerely hope that this leg makes sense to y'all and don't be afaird to PM me if you have any questions about the leg! :)
This was great fun and I hope to be able to continue my designing journey in Round 2! :)  :waves:
Previously on The Amazing Race…
Twelve new teams set off from the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte on race around the world for $1,000,000.
Phil: Welcome to The Amazing Race!
(Cheers from the teams)
At the starting line, two new twists surprised the teams.
Phil: This is a Hall of Fame, isn't it? People need to be voted in to a Hall of Fame, so where better than here to have....A YIELD VOTE!
Melissa: WHAT?
Camila: ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Phil: This will be a secret ballot. The ballots were handed to you upon your arrival here alongside a #2 pencil. Once you've made your decision, place them in the ballot box behind me. And fittingly, since we're in the hub of all things NASCAR, the ballot box will take the shape of the car of current NASCAR champion Kyle Busch. Everyone, please cast your votes now.
(Everyone casts their votes)
Phil: There's something else. After this starting line task, you all gotta find a team to partner with because you'll all be....INTERSECTED for this first leg!
Along the way, teams went on a rollercoaster ride of highs...
(Leg 4 - Tangier, Morocco)
Shawn: AWESOMESAUCE, CAM!
...and lows.
(Leg 11 - Shanghai, China)
Milo: STOP THIS CAR, MELISSA! RIGHT NOW!
Melissa: NO!
Milo: I'm serious, I'm gonna jump out this car right now!
New York Mets teammates Pete & Jeff and dating singers Shawn & Camila got off to a fast start, winning 6 of the first 7 legs.
Phil: Pete & Jeff...
...Shawn & Camila....
YOU ARE TEAM #1!
Along the way, 9 teams were eliminated...
Phil: Toni & Dallas...
...Amani & Marcus...
....Tyler & Brian...
...Doyle & Todd...
...Amanda & Kris...
...Chester & Ephraim...
...Trey & Lexi...
...Laurie & Melanie...
...Shawn & Camila...
...I'm sorry to tell you you have been eliminated from the race.
Tonight, one team will win $1,000,000 and...THE AMAZING RACE!
Bopper: Show up and get it up and let's go win that money, honey!
Bopper & Mark won the last leg of the race and will depart first at 4:16 AM.
DEPARTING TIMES:
Bopper & Mark: 4:16 AM
Milo & Melissa: 4:30 AM
Pete & Jeff: 4:59 AM
“FLY TO BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.”
Teams must now fly nearly 7,000 miles to Alabama's largest city - Birmingham.
Once they land, they must make their way to the city of Talladega and travel by taxi or marked Ford Mustang to the Idlewild Plantation House...
…to pick up their next clue.
“You have 200 dollars for this leg of the race.”
“COTTON UP!”
Phil: Cotton was a valuable crop during the Civil War. In this Roadblock, one team member must dress as a cotton farmer, known in the south as a doffer, and use the provided 19th century mechanical cotton gins to mill enough cotton for one pound's worth. Once they've farmed enough cotton, the superintendent will hand them their next clue.
“TRAVEL BY TAXI OR MARKED CAR TO THE HALL OF HEROES...”
Teams must now travel by taxi or marked car and find Talladega's Hall of Heroes Museum. This celebration of heroes throughout history is where teams will find their next clue!
“FIND THE PEOPLE KEY IN MAKING SCHOOL SEGREGATION UNCONSTITUTIONAL...”
The landmark 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education laid the groundwork for the US Civil Rights Movement and began the integration of blacks in the United States educational system. This task requires teams to look through the Hall of Heroes museum and find the statues of the 5 key players in the landmark Supreme Court decision - McKinley Burnett, Lucinda Todd, Charles Scott, Oliver Brown and...Thurgood Marshall. They must use the provided digital cameras to take pictures of the people who made this Supreme Court decision possible. Once they've taken the pictures, they must then show them to the curator to get their next clue.
“MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE SILK STOCKING DISTRICT...”
Teams must now drive themselves to the Historic Silk Stocking District - home to many classic architectural styles throughout history - to pick up their next clue.
“1. DON'T STOP THINKING ABOUT TOMORROW
2. KIM POSSIBLE'S HOMETOWN
3. 4 time NASCAR champion Jeff + President 42 + Lead singer of 'The Who'
4. Hall of Fame pitcher known as Tom Terrific.”
Teams must now figure out that the 4 riddles presented to them are leading them to the Fleetwood Home, Middleton House, the Gordon-Clinton-Townsend House and the Seavers Home - 4 historic homes in the Silk Stocking District. At each checkpoint, teams will receive a piece of a puzzle. When all 4 pieces are combined, they'll form a miniature tire that they can exchange at Talladega's first service station for their next clue.
“THE LAST MAJOR GENERAL OF UNION ARMY VOLUNTEERS WILL LEAD YOU TO YOUR NEXT DESTINATION...”
Teams must now figure out that their clue is leading them to Talladega College's Swayne Hall. Named for a Union Army General, this historically black college is where teams will pick up their next clue!
“IT ALL STARTED WITH A SIMPLE 'NO'...”
The US Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s began right here in the state of Alabama when Rosa Parks took a stand and refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus to a white man. That simple 'no' sparked a decade long movement for equality between whites and blacks. To win the $1,000,000 and The Amazing Race, teams must now test their knowledge of a movement that began...with a simple 'no'. Teams must now head into Swayne Hall and sit in on a Civil Rights class. After watching a video on the Civil Rights Movement, teams will then be presented with a 20 question quiz about the US Civil Rights Movement. If they score a C or higher, they'll be presented with their next clue. If not, they must watch the video and take the test again.
“DRIVE YOURSELVES TO THE PLACE RICKY BOBBY SPENT HIS NIGHTS...”
Teams must now figure out that their clue is referring to the Talladega Superspeedway. This 2.6 mile track is home to many annual events, including NASCAR's GEICO 500. Teams must make their way to the Moss-Thornton Grandstands just past the start-finish line to pick up their next clue.
“WHO'S READY TO TAKE THE CHECKERED FLAG?”
Phil: Talladega Superspeedway has been home to many photo finishes throughout the 70 year history of NASCAR. Today, it'll be home to what is sure to be an Amazing Race classic. Teams must don a regulation NASCAR firesuit and climb aboard a Richard Petty Driving Experience racecar. They'll then take a lap around the 2.6 mile Talladega Superspeedway at race speed, taking note of the flags they see along the way - 9 of which are those of the teams that were eliminated on the race. After they park their car on pit lane, they must first remember the teams that were Intersected in the first leg by picking out sets of racing tires bearing team pictures, then from a field of over 200 flags scattered on the frontstretch grass, they must find the flags bearing the images of the 9 teams that were eliminated and arrange them in the proper order. If they're wrong, they must climb back aboard the car and try again. If they're correct, the NASCAR official on hand will wave the green flag, authorizing them to run along the marked path to the Finish Line at Gatorade Victory Lane. The first team to arrive here will win $1,000,000 and...THE AMAZING RACE!
In the leg's first Roadblock, one team member had to dress as a cotton farmer, known in the deep south as a doffer, and use the provided 19th century mechanical cotton gins to mill one pound of cotton to get their next clue. In the final Roadblock of the race, one team member had to don a regulation NASCAR firesuit and climb aboard a Richard Petty Driving Experience racecar. They then had to drive one lap at race speed (around 180 MPH) around the 2.6 mile Talladega Superspeedway, taking note of the flags they saw along the way - 9 of which bore pictures of the previously eliminated teams. First, using sets of racing tires, they had to remember the teams that were Intersected in the first leg. Then, from a field of 200 flags scattered along the frontstretch grass, they had to find the flags bearing pictures of the 9 eliminated teams and arrange them in the proper elimination order using the provided flagstands. If they were correct, the NASCAR official on hand would wave the green flag, clearing them to run to the Finish Line. If not, they would have to run another lap.
Additional tasks:
- At the Hall of Heroes Museum, teams had to find and take pictures of the 5 key people in the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education - McKinley Burnett, Lucinda Todd, Charles Scott, Oliver Brown and Thurgood Marshall. Once the curator confirms the photos, teams would get their next clue.
- In the Silk Stocking District, teams were presented with a set of 4 riddles, leading to 4 places along the district: 1. DON'T STOP THINKING ABOUT TOMORROW (Fleetwood Home)
2. KIM POSSIBLE'S HOMETOWN (Middleton House)
3. 4 time NASCAR champion Jeff + President 42 + Lead singer of 'The Who' (Gordon-Clinton-Townsend House)
4. Hall of Fame pitcher known as Tom Terrific (Seavers Home)
At each location, teams would find a puzzle piece. Once all 4 pieces were combined, they'd form a miniature tire that they would have to bring to Talladega's first service station to exchange for their next clue.
- At Talladega College's Swayne Hall, teams had to sit in on a Civil Rights Movement class and watch a video about the US Civil Rights Movement of the 50s and 60s. Then, they had to take a 20 question quiz about the US Civil Rights Movement. If they scored a C or higher, they'd be presented with their next clue. If not, they'd have to watch the video and take the quiz again.
Notes for the Judges:
- I'm going for a Civil Rights theme for the tasks other than the Finish Line memory task, showcasing the barriers African-Americans in the United States had to overcome to attain equality. In this finale, the tasks showcase the period of slavery leading to the Civil War on the first RB; the first ARI harkens back to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision and the last ARI references Rosa Parks' iconic refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in the Alabama capital of Montgomery, which sparked the US Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s.
- The final RB does take a cue from season 9's Denver finale task at Red Rocks, but their teammate can not guide them at all and there's something else for the teams to remember because there was an added twist in Leg 1. Also, instead of remembering countries they visited, they have to remember the elimination order of the teams. Among the 200 flags are flags bearing Amazing Race teams from past seasons as decoys to throw teams off.
Fly to Miami, FL
Route Info: Ocean Park - Neptune Memorial Reef
ROADBLOCK: Dive for Clue (African Queen Post Card)
- Find Boat at Holiday Inn Key Largo
Route Info: Rescue, Rehab, Release (Turtle Hospital)
______________________________________________________
This is Santos, Brazil!
A coastal city full of histories, and home to the largest beachfront garden in the world, as well as the biggest port in Brazil.
And also known for its direct impact in the history of soccer!
At the Vila Belmiro, home field of soccer legend Pelé and Santos FC, teams will depart for the last leg of The Amazing Race.
(XXXX & YYYY) won the last leg and will depart first, after a 18-hour rest, at 16:04!
Route Info: Drive yourselves to Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paulo and fly to your final destination: Miami, Florida!
Once there, travel by taxi to Ocean Park in Key Biscayne!
You'll find your next clue there at the 8th Lifeguard House.
You have 478 USD for this leg of the race. Good Luck!
______________________________________________________
Teams are most likely taking the 1st flight out at 22:20. But if they can't, there is another availiable option at 23:30.
Flight Date: August 26th.
______________________________________________________
Roadblock: "Who wants to go deep into the city?"
In this Roadblock, one team member must take a provided boat with the Neptune Memorial Reef diving crew and wearing a diving suit, go down to the Atlantis Reef to the underwater city.
Once there, he or she must navigate the beautiful sculptures until they find a postcard: their next clue.
______________________________________________________
After the Roadblock, teams had to decipher the post card.
The post card referred to The African Queen. A known 1951 movie adapted from a 1935 novel. Teams would have to figure it out the clue was leading them to the actual African Queen boat.
The boat used as the African Queen in the movie is actually the 35-foot (10 m) L.S. Livingston which had been a working diesel boat for 40 years. The vessel was spotted gathering rust in a Florida marina in 2012 by a resident couple. The couple have since repaired the ailing ship and opened it up to tourists and film enthusiasts, providing cruises around the Florida Keys aboard the famous vessel.
Therefore, teams had to race to find the boat at Holiday Inn Key Largo.
______________________________________________________
Route Info: "Rescue, Rehab, Release!"
Teams were left to figure it out that the clue was in mention to the motto of the Turtle Hospital in Key Largo.
Up there, they would find the next clue at the entrance.
______________________________________________________
Route Info: Repair the Damage!
In this task, teams would have to learn from a turtle doctor how to correctly perform a shell repair and how to properly put up a bandage to their approval.
______________________________________________________
Route Info: Find Fred and take a picture of him.
The picture will provide you the next clue.
Teams needed to learn that Fred is in mention to the "Fred the Tree". Once there, they should take a zoomed picture with provided smartphone.
Next to Fred, teams will see two words: NAVAL STATION
______________________________________________________
Teams were left to figure it out they should take their taxi to the Naval Air Station in Key Largo.
______________________________________________________
Roadblock: "Who remembers flying...a lot?"
In the race's final Roadblock, one team member had to correctly place (in order of visit) all the names of Airports they've visited during the race. Of course, there will be some wrong plaques to throw them off as well.
Three captains will be there to approve or disapprove the task.
If it's correct, the designated captain will fly the teams in a charter!
All the way to the Finish Line at Fort Jefferson!
Hurry up! The first team to check-in wins The Amazing Race!
Full Maps for the Leg:
Key Biscayne is an island town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,344 at the 2010 census [5] (in July 1, 2019 population was estimated in 12,846).[6]
Key Largo (Spanish: Cayo Largo) is an island in the upper Florida Keys archipelago and is the largest section of the Keys, at 33 miles (53 km) long.
Key West (Spanish: Cayo Hueso) is an island in the Straits of Florida, within the U.S. state of Florida. Together with all or parts of the separate islands of Dredgers Key, Fleming Key, Sunset Key, and the northern part of Stock Island, it constitutes the City of Key West.
FURTHER DETAILS
Hello, Judges! Hope you liked my leg. Here are some explanations:
1 - Santos is a huge part of Brazilian history and culture. I think it has never been visited before and would be awesome to see a leg there. The Pit Start is the legendary Urbano Caldeira Stadium, where Pelé (considered the best soccer player ever) wrote history every single day. I think this is a leg full of nature-sights so i wanted to begin with a man-made thing.
2 - Self driving to the airport is the only self driving i wanted to include. I think it's stupid (sorry for the word) to let anyone self drive in the final leg. It could represent speeding tickets plus danger. I know the taxi rides for this leg are long, but i figured it's best to have it this way than to risk teams and crews lives.
3 - As a great final leg should have, i've included some trick tasks in which teams have to solve a riddle or a photo to find a location. It's a classic in TAR and i love it. This makes the leg more difficult, i believe so.
4 - I think the rural Florida goes unused even though we had the brilliant final there in TAR 18. If you ask me, i'd prefer my leg over theirs...
5 - Fred the Tree is supposed to include some emotional tone towards the ending of the leg. Plus, teams have to take a picture because Fred is in a old bridge and teams are driving in another bridge. No easy way to connect there.
6 - Why is my memory task original? Well, it's never been done before if i recall correctly. Airports names are something tricky for the teams to decorate.
7 - This might be the most remote Finish Line even in TAR. I think it's nice.
8 - Also, i love the 2 Roadblock legs. It surprises teams, even though the Final Leg is not even a huge surprise anymore. I'd be surprised to see a Detour in a Final Leg again. So i think my leg fits with TAR's actual purpose of a Final Leg design.
9 - The Finish Line is inside that Fort Jefferson hexagon. The helicopter lands there - far enough from the finish line to not ruin everything though.
10 - I think this leg creates an emotional and happy aspect to the teams as well since they will be seeing lots of sight beauties along the way. Blue ocean diving, underwater city, turtles, airplanes, flying above that beautiful sea all the way to Fort Jefferson...will be awesome.
11 - For the 1st Roadblock teams will use an tradicional diving suit with a air pump. The post card will be inside a tradicional TAR clue which will be protected from the water, of course.
12 - At the African Queen, the clues would be inside the boat. Easy to spot.
13 - Instructions to help a turtle: https://www.cuteness.com/article/turtle-bleeding-shell
"Clean the wound, if you can, with water or hydrogen peroxide, and bandage it. Gauze bandages with adhesive on the edges may work well on small cuts, while sanitary napkins cut to size can come in handy for larger gashes."
14 - In Fred the Tree, there would be a sign placed to spell the words "Naval Station"
15 - In the final Roadblock, the plaques would have the original names of the airports. Instead of "Atlanta International Airport" we would have "Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport"
Of course, there will be more plaques with random names to confuse teams.
I believe this was all. Thanks!
Design #12 - David
[Knoxville, Tennessee]
Leg 12 (Trinidad y Tobago to US)
*shots of different areas of the country visited in the previous leg*
Phil: This is Trinidad and Tobago, an island country in the southern Caribbean Sea. With a mix of Spanish and British heritage, this is one of the most inhabited countries in the Caribbean and just off the shores of Venezuela, and is dependent on oil as well as tourism. And on the eastern coste of Tobago Island lies Little Tobago. This small island, which serves as a natural space where birds breed and also has a coral reef around it, was the last pitstop in a race around the world. During the pitstop, teams have rested aboard a yacht and have been transported to Port of Spain Ferry Terminal.
Note: Departure times will be between 4pm and 8pm. Pitstop length could be somewhere between 18 to 24 hours to accommodate for the timing of this final leg.
Route Info: Use the provided album to get to your final destination city. Once there, take a taxi to your location, where your next clue awaits.
You have 50 USD for this leg of the race.
Additional Information (provided to teams along with the album):
If you require a place for online research, head to the Radisson Hotel Trinidad.
For flight bookings, get to Go 4 Less Travel Agency.
You MUST fly to the closest major airport to your destination.
Phil (voice-over): Teams must first find out that their next destination is Dolly Parton's theme park, Dollywood, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Tennessee is mainly known for country music and natural landscapes, as well as food and whisky distilleries. While Nashville is the capital of the country music, Tennessee is the state where the most prominent singers have developed their career in country music, and among them, The Queen of Country music. Dolly Parton has composed over 3,000 songs and sold over 100 million albums worldwide, which has given her nickname.
Teams will have to acknowledge Dolly's birth house in Sevier County, which gave name to one of her early albums, My Tennessee Mountain Home. Teams will have to realise by the small edit in the album cover that they do not have to go to the original birth house but to its replica in Dollywood. For that, they will have to fly to Knoxville, TN, and take a taxi to Dollywood. It is there where the same Dolly Parton will await teams with their next clue after teams sing to her a piece of one of her songs.
Note: Due to the few number of flights both at Port of Spain and Knoxville airports which make connections hard to achieve, all teams will be on the following United Airlines flights, which fly daily:
Route Info: Make your way to Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge Airport, and search the runway for your next clue.
Roadblock: Who wants to fly like an Eagle?
Phil: A Roadblock is a task that only one person can perform. In this Roadblock, both team members will hop on the light plane and fly 130 miles towards Warren County Memorial Airport. When the instructor says, the team member who is performing the Roadblock will have to search for a big race flag in the ground and, once they have found it in Airport Lake, skydive along with the instructor to it and retrieve the next clue. Once the jumpers have reached Airport Lake, they will have to swim to the buoy holding their next clue before taking a buggy for 2 miles to the airport where they will reunite with the other team member.
Route Info: Make your way to Happy Camper Campground, and search the main gate for your next clue.
Phil (voice-over): Tennessee is home to a great number of State Parks and many natural landscapes and sceneries, which makes it a perfect destination for many Americans who want to take some outdoor holidays, and campsites like this are the perfect place to overnight during such stays. It is here, that teams will find their next clue.
Route Info: Choose one of the camping areas and help the visitors by assembling the camping tent and their area with chairs, a table and cooking gear. Once you have correctly set everything as in the model area, the happy couple will hand you your next clue.
Phil: Camping is one of the most popular accommodations for people from all over the country that want to experience the healing power of nature in Tennessee. Now, teams will have the chance to show their camping skills by helping these young couples to assemble their camping facilities for their overnight in the outdoors. Teams will need a strong sense of teamwork and eye to detail to exactly match the model area. When they are correctly done, the young couple will give teams their next clue.
Route Info: Make your way to the Rock Island State Park, and head to Beach Rd where you will find the start of the Eagle Trail. Then, hike the Eagle Trail while collecting 11 different flags from the countries visited during the race before ending your hike in the Blue Hole, where your next clue awaits.
Phil (voice-over): Teams must now take a taxi 5 miles to the Rock Island State Park, a natural reserve which is one of the most popular green areas in Tennessee, where people go for hiking, swimming in their lakes along the waterfalls or stay in their cabins for a relaxing getaway. Once in the park, teams will have to follow the Eagle Trail, a 1.5 mile mountain course ideal for hiking, while they will collect 11 flags of the countries where each of the pitstops were located throughout the race course. Flags are placed on the trail in the correct order, so if they realise they have skipped one country, they can head back to search for it without having to wait until the end of the course and not wasting a significant amount of time. If they have all 11 flags at the end of the course, the Park Guard will hand teams their next clue.
Roadblock: Who wants to use the past to change their future?
Phil: This is the final Roadblock of the race, and it must be performed by the member who did not perform the skydiving. In this Roadblock teams are provided with a board and they have to attach each of the country flags in order into the corresponding team who performed best (among the Final Three teams) in each of the legs. When teams have placed all the flags, if they are correct, a key will drop on the lower right corner and they will use it to unlock one of the tandem bikes they will have to ride for 2 miles until the Finish Line: the Great Falls Dam Bridge. Located in the junction of the Caney Fork River and the Collins River, this pedestrian only bridge is the Finish Line for this race around the world. The first team to check in here will be crowned as the winners and receive the $1,000,000 prize.
[Key West, Florida]
This is Medellin, Colombia. A once small city specializing in gold and coffee, the 21st century saw this town turn into a sprawling urban utopia that's brimming with creative ideas for urban living seen no where else in the world. Medellin is proud to contain a eco-árbol, a tree-like structure that acts as an air purifier, pebble parks to dip your bare feet in mud, grass and a pond to relax, and a cohesive state-of-the-art public transport system to limit pollution.
Showing the true spirit of Medellin, the botanical park that was once closed due to the city's high crime rate reopened with a futurist design with stunning architecture. Teams will start their final leg of the race at the Orchideorama, inside the Medellin Botanical Gardens.
Kim & Michele, who were the first to arrive at the end of the last leg, will depart first at 2:48AM.
Michele: Fly to Key West, United States!
Teams must now fly 1500 miles to Key West, United States located in the Florida Keys. The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands built on top of ancient coral reefs. A popular destination in the southern United States, Key West is a renowned for its Duval street pubs, pastel-hued houses and conch style homes.
All teams are flying on the same flight to Key West International Airport, connecting in Miami.
When teams land, the only instructions they'll be given is to find the "southernmost point of the continental United States". Upon getting confirmation of the widely known spot by locals, they'll travel by taxi to the Southernmost Point Buoy. This landmark represents the unique closeness to Cuba and the Cuban community in the Florida Keys. Teams will find their next clue here at a custom clue box resembling a buoy. Teams have $94 dollars for this leg of the race.
Teams must now make their way on foot half a mile to the iconic Gato Cigar Factory. Founded by Eduardo Hidalgo Gato in 1871, it is a cultural landmark in the historical district of Key West. Gato was an innovative figure in old Key West, as he built apartments around the factory for his workers, paved roads, funded a hospital and even started a rookie baseball league. The Gato Factory was one of the earliest American integrated workplace where Cuban, African, Bahamian-Americans and whites worked side by side while their children attend the same school. Teams will find their next clue here.
"Who's ready to wrap up the race?"
Note: The racer who does not complete this roadblock MUST complete the final roadblock of the race.
A roadblock is a task that only one person may perform. In the first roadblock of the finale, the person performing this task must learn the art of cigar rolling. Gato took the art of cigar rolling seriously, from the way the windows face the east/west to maximize the sunlight, to starting the day arranging the leaves in 20 shades of brown to use the most expensive leaves as the wrapper. In this task, racers must focus on rolling cigars into different figurados:
Parejos are your common cigars. Torpedos are similar to parejos except that the cap is pointed. Pyramids have a broad foot and evenly narrows to a pointed cap. Perfectos narrow at both ends and bulged in the middle. Presidentes are shaped like a parejo but considered a figurado because of its enormous size and occasional closed foot akin to a perfecto. Once teams can roll 3 cigars of each figurado, the cigar master will hand teams their next clue in the form of a T-shirt.
Upon completion of the roadblock, the cigar master hands teams a shirt. While the shirt says Del Sol on it, teams are not going to the Del Sol shop in Key West! Instead they must be intuitive and realize that Del Sol is a famous Caribbean island gift shop specializing in color changing shirts. Upon putting the shirt in sunlight, teams will see that the shirt is directing them to head to..
Mote's Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Research and Restoration. Teams must hail a taxi and travel 30 miles to the coral research center located in Summerland Key. The location is in a prime spot in the keys, as it is near mangrove forests, sea-grass meadows and lies within the NOAA Marine Sanctuary. Teams will find their next clue here.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/EV3_DwYumxE" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/EV3_DwYumxE</a>
Ocean acidification is one of the many climate threats to the world's oceans. Ocean acidification is the gradual lowering of the ocean's pH, which is caused by pollution of the atmosphere. This pollution (in the form of CO2) is taken in by the ocean water to form carbonic acid and this shift in equilibrium leads to less carbonate in the water for corals, mollusks and other marine calcifiers to form critical skeletons. With coral being a cornerstone and literal backbone of major underwater ecosystems, this is a threat to the environment, which was recently exacerbated by Hurricane Irma which destroyed many coral reefs.
A part of Mote's International Center's work is reef restoration, and in the aftermath of Irma the center has more than doubled their efforts and staff to growing coral in tanks before restoring them in the wild to rehabilitate the keys' coral populations. One method is using Biorock. The method uses an electrically conductive frame that is submerged and attached to the bottom of the ocean. The electric current (that is safe for swimmers and marine wildlife) draws and precipitates natural minerals such as the key calcium carbonate. Once the structure becomes solidified, divers take the coral (grown in labs like Mote's center) and attach them to the frame. With the stream of calcium carbonate, the coral grows faster than in the "wild" and the reef forms and attracts other wildlife found in coral reefs.
To get their next clue, teams must help assemble the biorock frame, take it on a boat and place it in one of the center's restoration sites. Once it's completed, they will free dive and help the conservationists attach coral to another structure to receive their next clue.
Upon finishing the task, their boat drops them off at Flying Bonefish Seaplane Base near Marathon where they open their clue, instructing them to travel by taxi to Matecumbe Harbor in Islamorada where their next clue awaits at the dock.
The Amazing Race is a test of team's navigational skills, and it will be back to the basics. Teams have a map of the keys with an X, as well as GPS preloaded with coordinates of a parcel hidden underwater. They must instruct their driver in where to drive and check their accuracy by reading their GPS. Teams will soon discover they were sent to an area in the vicinity of Alligator Key Lighthouse, which honors the navy schooner Alligator which went aground there in 1822. Teams will have to untie their parcel containing their clue in the chest deep water.
Teams will now have their driver take them to the largest party in the water at the Islamorada sandbar! This sandbar is located near mile marker 84 and is only accessible by watercraft, with tons of people coming to the sandbar with a variety of boats, from kayaks to paddleboards to fishing boats. This congregation of boats is a hit party scene in the summer months, featuring lounge chairs, barbecues and community camaraderie. When they arrive, teams will have to disembark their vessel to find their next clue atop a marked boat.
"Who needs to get a clue?"
Note: The racer who did not complete the prior roadblock MUST complete this one.
In the final roadblock of the race, racers will be tested on their memory of the special, unique clue boxes used throughout the race. Navigating the sandbar with a canoe, teams will search the literal sea of watercraft for clue boxes they previously encountered in the race. There will be multiple versions of each clue boxes, with some having the wrong color here or a missing attachment there. Once they collect the clue boxes in the race, they will bring them and arrange them in the order they were encountered. Once they are correct, they will receive the final clue of the race.
Teams must now make their way to the finish line, Founders Park! The park is a local recreation club for residents living or renting in Islamorada. Teams will have to take their boat under the bridge and dock at the Plantation Yacht Harbor & Marina on the gulf side, and then they must make their way on foot to the finish line located at the park's amphitheater! Hurry this is it, GO GO GO!
-Teams' taxi trips are purposely broken up between foot travel and boat travel so that they can't keep one taxi the entire leg and force them to work hard to secure their vital transportation to get a million dollars (or have to work very hard to keep the same taxi such as instructing them to follow them while they walk on foot to the Cigar factory to keep them). This wasn't on accident, I wanted them to suffer on purpose! }:> Teams are given ample money (plus they should have leftover from prior legs) for the extended taxi rides.
-At the roadblock, the cigar master would only remove the incorrect ones so they wouldn't have to start all the way over.
-Upon completion of the coral task the trip to Marathon would take about 60 minutes, plus a 30 minute taxi to the next harbor. The reason it's not one big boat trip is that boats are slower than cars and teams shouldn't have navigate the entire ocean  :lol: The boat to Alligator Reef takes approximately 60 minutes (I have done this exact trip before) and to the sandbar would be roughly 30min-45min as well using that estimation. This means the rough transport times should be 2-2 and a half hours. But it's a rural leg so this is to be expected!
-With teams landing at 1pm, the leg should take 5-7 hours with transportation times included which should put the finish at roughly sunset/twilight for that pretty ending which in the summer is around 8:30pm!!
-The final roadblock will offer the teams privacy, as a floating pipe and drape will separate the 3 racers completing the task from cheating or peeking.
-The coral task was my fave and I'm passionate about conservation (and have done bioframing before) so if you want to know more than what I didn't include in the 3 paragraph explanation PM me  :luvya:
Maps. It's not one big map because I have locales off the main land and google doesn't like it. But it's all linear in the sense that we never travel south on Overseas Highway, always north!
Phil: This is London, England, the Capital of the United Kingdom. Home to nine million people this historic metropolis was founded 2000 years ago by the Romans as Londinium and is littered with culture & historic buildings such as…
…Leadenhall Market. This 14th century marketplace right in the heart of London’s financial district was the penultimate Pit Stop on this race around the world and will be the starting point of the final leg, of the Amazing Race!
Phil: James & Jamie who won the last leg of the race will depart first at 4:00am.
Clue: Fly to Boston, Massachusetts! Once you land, drive yourselves to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the town of Falmouth on Cape Cod, where you’ll find your next clue. You have $150 for this leg of the race.
Phil: Teams must now fly over 3000 miles to Boston, Massachusetts, the largest city in New England. Once they land at Logan International Airport, they must drive themselves 77 miles to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, where they’ll pick up their next clue.
*Other teams depart at 4:23am & 4:32am*
Roadblock: Who’s feeling fishy?
Phil: Cape Cod is notorious for Marine Biology due to the diverse array of sea life found just off the coast. In this Roadblock, one team member must sit in a lecture and learn the names of 10 aquatic creatures, native to Massachusetts. Then they must go to a classroom and match each animal to their name, however, teams will have to match the animals with their latin name, not the English name which teams should pay attention to in the lectures. If they pass their quiz, the marine biologist will hand them their next clue.
Clue: Drive Yourselves to the compound which the 35th US president used as their base for their presidential campaign in 1960.
Phil: Teams must now figure out that the house the 35th president used as their presidential campaign’s base is the former home of John F. Kennedy. To get there, they’ll need to drive themselves 25 miles to 111 Irving Avenue in the town of Hyannis where they’ll find their next clue.
Clue: Drive Yourselves to Spanky’s Clam Shack in Hyannis to get your next clue.
Roadblock: Who is on a roll? Note: The team member who performed the last Roadblock may not perform this one.
Phil: Lobster Rolls are a staple here on Cape Cod, and here at Spanky’s, people can’t seem to get enough of these fishy delights. For this roadblock, one team member must deliver 12 lobster rolls to 12 customers on the Hyannis Harbour who are wearing t-shirts with the names of various locations seen on the race, printed on the back. Each roll will be marked with a leg number, so teams will have to give each customer the roll which has the leg number corresponding to the location on their T-shirt. In exchange they’ll receive a letter of the alphabet, once they have all 12 letters, teams must unscramble them, to get their next clue from the matradee.
Aaliyah: O, P, E, T, O, W, V, R, I, N, N, C. Oh!, It’s Provincetown!
Clue: Drive yourselves to the Barnstable Municipal Airport where you will travel by helicopter to the town of Provincetown, once there, travel by taxi to Cabot’s Candy Factory to receive your next clue.
Phil: Teams must now get in a private chopper to their final destination, Provincetown! Once teams land in this laidback town at the far end of Cape Cod, they must make their way to Cabot’s Candy factory, to receive their next clue.
Clue: With instruction from a confectionist, hand stretch 5 pounds of salt water taffy, to get your next clue.
Phil: Teams must now help to produce a favourite treat of Cape Codders, salt water taffy. Stretching this sticky taffy creates the chewiness which keeps the customers coming back for more. If teams can master this messy job, the confectionist will hand them their next clue
Clue: Travel by taxi to Race Point Lighthouse to find your next clue.
Clue: Listen to a series of Morse Code which tells you a list of the countries you have visited along the race. Once you have understood the code, you must run out to one of the boats on the beach and raise the flags of the countries heard in Morse Code in the order that you heard them, to receive your clue.
Phil: Morse code was invented by native Massachusettsan, Samuel Morse. And his invention will be the epicentre of teams final memory challenge. Teams must put on headsets and listen to a series of morse code which says out each country visited on the race in a non chronological order. Once teams have cracked the code, they can run to one of the marooned boats on the beach, and then raise the flags of the nations in the order they heard. If teams have raised the correct flags, in the correct order, the captain will give them their final clue, of the Amazing Race!
Clue: At Last!, The Finish Line, GO GO GO! Run along the marked path for one mile where you will find the finish line on Race Point Beach!
Phil: Teams must now run one mile along Race Point Beach, to the finish line where the first team who enters the mat will win the one million dollars and the Amazing Race!
Congratulations Alisha & Aaliyah, you are the winners of the one million dollars, and the official winners of The Amazing Race!
As It is the final leg, I wanted teams to be on the same flight to level out the playing field. This was the earliest direct flight arriving into Boston, which would roughly allow teams to finish around sunset, which would be a great setting to end the Amazing Race on.
So I didn’t know much about the North East of the USA, so I chose Cape Cod as it’s an area I have heard about and I know is meant to be stunning. I essentially mixed what Cape Cod is famous for (Marine Biology, Salt Water Taffy, Lobster & The Kennedy’s) with what I remember doing at the coast when I was younger (in England), so learning about sea life, eating seafood (mainly fish & chips aha) and eating junk food. The morse code was just a random idea I had, it just so happens that Samuel Morse was from Massachusetts meaning the task made sense in the end.
This leg is expected to take around 8 hours, so after landing at about 12, teams should be arriving at the mat around 8pm, which is right at sunset, a beautiful ending to an Amazing Race.
Teams were given $150 this leg. This is because a taxi fare from Leadenhall Market to Heathrow will cost around $60-70 and teams will only have to travel very short distances in Provincetown so taxis will cost less than $30 there. Meaning teams will have enough leg money.
Teams were able to take notes in the marine biology lecture, however they weren’t allowed to take their notes outside of the lecture hall.
The Locations Which were named on the T-Shirts during the second roadblock are...
1. Tianfu Square
2. Anada Temple
3. Phewa Lake
4. Aquila Game Reserve
5. Cape of Good Hope
6. Chez Sami
7. Sundial Restaurant
8. Statue of Neptune
9. Palace of Caserta
10. Los Islands
11. Leed's Castle
12. 111 Irving Avenue
This above displays the Morse Code for the countries visited on the race. Teams would have heard this through headphones in the order of Italy, Turkey, United States, Myanmar, South Africa, China, United Kingdom, Lebanon, Guinea & Nepal. I wanted the final challenge to be challenging, which I believe it is. But as teams will already know the countries they had visited, teams should be able to work out the morse code so the task will be completable unlike the S16 detour.
Thank you for making it to the end, hopefully I’ll see you next round aha.
