Wow, you guys had some awesome questions this week, thanks so much!!
MISTY GILES/SURVIVOR # 3 VOTED OUT
Q: You went into Tribal Council thinking your alliance with the younger guys was solid… what happened?
MG: You know, they pulled the wool over my eyes and outplayed me! They were playing both sides of the fence, between the all-male alliance and the deal with Sally and I, and I was the first person to be voted out of La Mina. It was crushing, very heart-wrenching for me. I came to play, I came to win, and to go home this early is really tough.
Q: It’s kind of a back-handed compliment to be voted out because you’re too smart!
MG: Yeah, but it’s still tough to deal with, that’s for sure. But that’s how the cookie crumbles, and there’s no way to change it now.
Q: Nick and Austin had a choice of which alliance to go with, why do you think they chose the older guys?MG: Maybe it was a more comfortable situation for them personally, to go with the older men. It’s the only thing I can think of, because in my mind, all the strategy lied with having two women and two men, and I just don’t logically see what they found was better about Dan and Terry. Terry was a great physical threat, and the women,
Sally and I are both great athletes, we’re physical as well, and I thought they’d be a little more comfortable with us, but it didn’t work out that way.Q: Why does Terry have so much control over your tribe?
MG: He was definitely a leader, an instantaneous leader. Very strong, very smart, I like him a lot. We thought a lot on the same level, Terry and I, before each challenge, would sit and strategize and lay out a plan, so you know, he was definitely on my target “to go” list, I was like, “Okay, the first person we gotta vote out is Terry, because he’s gonna be hard to beat later,” and it looks like he felt the same way about me!
Q: You and Terry had a lot in common, he’s a fighter pilot, you’re a missile engineer… when did you find out that Dan was an astronaut?
MG: I actually didn’t know that during the game! It was on the tip of my tongue, he said he worked for NASA, and he’s done all these things, and I kept going, “Hmmm, there’s something familiar about you”, and it didn’t hit me until I was out of the game that he was an astronaut! What a unique situation, I dreamed about working for NASA since I was a child, I shared that with him out there. We had some good conversations. Too bad they didn’t have us building rockets for a challenge! We would have blown them away! (laugh)
Q: Did you know how strong Terry and Dan’s bond was?
MG: Oh, that was so obvious! There was no breaking up those two. They came into the game and started on the same tribe, they made an alliance immediately… I just couldn’t find an angle. You know, there were 3 women and we were outnumbered, but we tried everything we could. Q: When you need strength in challenges early on, Ruth Marie seemed like a logical first boot, because she was getting pretty weak. Why didn’t they target her?
MG: I think maybe they thought I would be more of a challenge down the road, and I agree with them. The tougher a situation gets, the tougher I’m gonna be, so they were probably smart to vote me off sooner rather than later.
Q: Did you try to get Ruth Marie to join your alliance of four?
MG: Yes, we did, but she made a little deal with Dan or something, and was trying to work in there and stay in the game as long as she could, so good for her. Q: It looked like you the bugs were eating you alive out there! How bad was it?
MG: It was pretty horrifying. I’ve got scars now that I’ll carry with me forever to remember my lovely Survivor experience! But if you ever want to go camping and save on the bug spray, take me with you! I attract them all! (laugh)
Q: What was it like on Exile Island?
MG: It was tough, mentally and physically, especially being the first one to be exiled. You’re out there and you’re thinking, “Oh my gosh, I got here and I finally started playing the game of Survivor and I’m the first person exiled!”
It’s very disheartening, it throws you off mentally, and you gotta work very hard at staying mentally strong and finding that immunity idol, because if you don’t find it and your team loses again, it’s so easy to get rid of you! And also, just trying to stay physically strong… there was no water, there was no food, and you have to live off the land.
Q: Your tribe was really weakening, why was finding food such a problem?
MG: We didn’t have any protein except that little 3 and a half inch fish, and that wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing. Without much protein, it’s hard to keep your spirits up when you’re starving. We didn’t have any coconut trees on our island, but we did have snails and hermit crabs. I hope I never see another snail on my plate ever again! I’m not up for escargot! (laugh)
Q: out of time, thanks, etc.
