rules regarding boarding flights to next route
« on: April 01, 2005, 12:14:48 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am new here. I was wondering something that occured and puzzled me.

I don't understand why on the last show that the competitors had to wait 8 hours for the next flight to South Africa. Why can't these supposedly smart people not call a travel agency or airline to see if they can drive to another city or district that has an earlier connection. Why this strategy isn't used is beyond me. Why would they limit theirselves to just one city or airport unless there isn't any other city within a couple of hours drive. Maybe its against the rule books to call a travel agency or airline. Can anyone figure out why these types of common sense strategies aren't being used. Maybe they(producers of the show) don't want to have film crew in multiple countries at a time so they purposely limit the competitors to just one flight that enables everyone else to catch up. I guess the best strategy is not to fall at the back of the pack because until the last leg coming first means very little.

First of all,  _^% to the boards..

now, unless I'm completely answering the wrong questions, they were in Buenos Aires at Ezeiza International Airport. Its hard to get out of Argentina without leaving through this airport and most flights have a connecting flight in Brazil (Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, etc.).

The racers are allowed to go to Travel Agencies and many of them do (Kris and Jon, Colin and Christie, and a lot of other successful teams). That flight was the only flight to South Africa that day and Ray and Deana even asked if there were any flights that left earlier and the guy said no. I just think flights to other continents from South Africa is rare.

I'm not very knowledgable (<-- don't even know how to spell that) but i'm sure someone else can answer your question

Also they get penalized if they do thing different then the clue....like if they were told the take a cab and they drov ethe car fromthe other leg or when they had to go get a clue before playing roulette.

I think if clues says go to X airport they have to go to that airport....I also think it helps with camera crews.

I gather that Ray and Deana were inquiring about earlier flights strictly from the Buenes Aires terminal in Ezeiza. I am so new to this reality show that I wasn't aware of all the millions of different rules. Too many rules makes it easier for the weaker competitors to catch up. Call this a socialistic competition boarding on Strict Communistic rules. This way you don't have a couple of superior teams being in multiple different countries and turning the competition into a cake walk leaving the weak and feeble behind to pick up the scraps. This also would make it hard for the camera crew to keep track in many different countries. I guess there is a fine line between reality Tv and Real reality.

Removing some of these rules(such as limiting the competitors to boarding only at one terminal) would make this show more real and enjoyable.

That flight from Joburg to London is great.

Did they really have something in the clue saying to go to a specfic airport? I don't think so. But, getting out of Argentina without through Buenos Aires airport would be pretty hard to do.

South America -> Africa is not exactly a high traffic route so I'd be surprised if there is more than a few flights a day connecting both continents.  The aiirlines probably collect african traffic all over SA and concentrate them into a hub city for the transatlantic flight.

I would tend to agree that Africa is a low traffic zone so probably in this case my example of strategy utilization would be useless. They probably had no choice of flights in this case, but in earlier episodes in South America I am sure some of them could have connected on earlier flights by simply driving to another terminal or city. I hope I see this strategy implored on more domestic flights on future shows otherwise, I am suspiscious that the producers don't want this show to be a cake walk for any teams. That would make the show less exciting with down to the wire finishes. Just my opinion. Reality shows such as TAR are entertaining, but I realize that they walk a fine line between true reality and dramatized controlled entertainment.
