Previously on TAR, 13 teams arrived and took off in Puerto Vallarta for a million dollars. Chris & Mary got off to a trip! And Rohan & Maya got off to an Austin Powers situation. Juan & Shane were situated in the back of the pack, but picked it up as they went on. The tasks tested teams, especially Karishma. Amber & Vinny felt the pressure. But in the end, Rohan & Maya came up short. Rod & Leticia arrived at the mat 1st, but it's a KOR...

Leticia says having to run legs back-to-back is extreme, she's not an athlete like Rod. It's going to be a challenge to remember for him. Ricky & Cesar said not getting 1st was disappointing, but it's giving them a push. They discuss their dating life and think TAR is the best test of their relationship. "Look at the bridge, you think this is the one?". They run one way into a market. Rod & Leticia see. It's a chicken with a head cut off kind of race.

We return to shots of Puerto Vallarta and Derek & Shelisa leaving in 3rd. They feel they are underestimated and they have known each other longer than some of the racers' lives. Shelisa finds a map and it's free! Add it to her sudubook collection.

Derek points out Iguana Bridge on the map. He talks about being her best friend. "You don't wanna run at all?" - Derek

Ricky & Cesar still running while Rod & Leticia get to the clue 1st.

DETOUR: Balloon Collection or Color Correction
In Balloon Collection, teams must pick up colored balloons to a party while avoiding popping them in the market. In Color Correction, teams must search through patterned papers for a sequence of 10 flags that don't match the others on an arrayed field of papers.

Ricky & Cesar leave the Detour clue in 2nd and do the balloons because they ran by it.

Juan & Shane leave in 4th, they met in pilot training. They meet a fork in the road.

Ricky & Cesar start picking up balloons while Rod & Leticia arrive. They notice Rod & Leticia having both bunches of balloons. Cesar course corrects and grabs his assortment of balloons back there.

Derek & Shelisa are confused where the bridge clue is. Rod & Leticia finish up very fast WITH 3 sets while Ricky & Cesar just found the 2nd and 3rd behind. Derek & Shelisa still finding it difficult to locate it. "Ask him where he got the balloons!"

Rod & Leticia start getting into a tiff where Rod needs Leti to run. Meanwhile, Derek & Shelisa do the balloon Detour. They reveal they are Lifetime Fitness members.

Ricky & Cesar finish the Detour. Juan & Shane start doing the balloons. Derek & Shelisa reiterate, "each of you should pick up one bunch."

Michelle & Sean leave in 5th and start running to Zona Romantica. Michelle says one of their goals is to "just be with each other". Michelle is already tired from running.

Derek & Shelisa pick up the second set of balloons while Yvonne & Melissa (title quote sayer) leave in 6th.

One team member must paint their teammate's face with calavera sugar-skull makeup following the picture in the frame.

Leticia is relieved it's in her wheelhouse while Ricky says he has experience with drag makeup.

Sunny & Bizzy talk about Bizzy's daughter not realizing boys can be firefighters too. They leave in 9th.

Rod wants margaritas and Coronas. Leticia says the boyfriends are neck-and-neck with them the entire time.

Ricky calls faces "real estate" from his drag makeup terminology. "My issue is that I'm a perfectionist."

Leticia gets a check first and has spots missing.

Juan & Shane find the last set of balloons. Kishori & Karishma leave in 10th and find a large map, pointing them to a random bridge. The cousins think if they aren't 1st, they're last. They are already in a mess leaving the previous midpoint.

Chris & Mary and Amber & Vinny leaving in 11th and now last. Vinny and Amber says "it's on, we gotta go!". Vinny says the race is like an ER emergency.

Sunny & Bizzy arrive at the papers. They have to take out the incorrect strand and deliver it to the party planner. Beach Boys arrive at the Detour clue pickup and do the colored paper task.

Sunny & Bizzy have a guide and use it to determine the outlier. Anthony & Bailey are taken aback by the flags and see the moms. "This one hurts my head." - Bailey. They switch tasks. Oh no.

Angie & Danny arrive at the Detour pickup location, they do the papers. Angie thinks it's a symbol. She doesn't know what she's looking for.

Yvonne & Melissa find the balloon vendor and leave the Detour in 5th. Beach Boys don't see balloons. It's a lot further than they think. "I'm not in the mental state to look at them and organize them." Anyways, they start taking up balloons.

Sunny & Bizzy release a strand and has a mishap, disapproved. They cut the wrong one. They are exhausted and it's hotter than hell. No time to drink water. "So we did something way wrong. This is killing us." - Sunny

We come back to papel picado hell as Sunny & Bizzy are struggling. Michelle & Sean still can't find Iguana Bridge. They arrive at Lazaro Park. Uh oh. They begin the Roadblock (incorrectly). Shelisa says Derek looks like a hot mess despite Derek pointing out people put makeup on every day.

Chris & Mary are finally shown and are superfans of the race! They try to find the bridge while Angie & Danny are amix with teams like Amber & Vinny who can't find the bridge clue. They help the emergency nurses with directions to the bridge. I don't agree with Danny justifying helping teams, but fine...

Rod & Leticia find the Pit Stop! They are TEAM NUMBER ONE!

Ricky & Cesar lurk in from behind Phil. Rod & Leticia win OneKey Cash points from Expedia to Lisbon, Portugal! Leticia says winning this leg is emotional not realizing how strong they are. It's a big confidence boost. Ricky & Cesar are officially TEAM NUMBER TWO. Phil points out they were at each other's pace this entire leg. Ricky says it feels good coming close to them.

Meanwhile, Kishori & Karishma are still on the beginning of the leg. Can't find the bridge, but found the Roadblock at the park too.

"There's only seven in here, this has to be it!" - Karishma the Confident.

Kishori see Juan & Shane and start an iconic moment of epiphany. Juan & Shane say there's a whole-as Detour before the Roadblock. Karishma consoles Kishori saying this isn't the correct sequence. Michelle and Sean overhear their conversation and starts wiping Sean's additional clown makeup off fittingly. Perfect.

Derek & Shelisa get a call for a check. They are approved despite the Dollar General look.

Anthony & Bailey progress on the balloons while Angie & Danny are proud of each other. Danny asks if this is harder than childbirth.

Beach Boys leave the Detour in 6th. Sunny & Bizzy aren't trying to narrow down their papel with no success. Angie & Danny arrive at the party planner in 7th. Danny says they made a good decision after seeing the firefighters struggling.

Amber & Vinny pick up the Detour clue in 9th. Chris & Mary vs Kishori & Karishma vs. Michelle & Sean in the back of the pack picking up the Detour clue.

Juan & Shane are approved and move on, surprising Melissa & Yvonne. "I'm relaxed."

Amber & Vinny are excited to grab the last pair of balloons and drop them off at the party planner. "We beat out a bunch of teams, babe. They're still back there."

Sunny & Bizzy see a swapped strand while the actual back of the pack are still confused by the strand terminology.

Chris & Mary switch to the balloons while Michelle & Sean start the balloons. Sunny & Bizzy call for a check and they are the FIRST team to complete the papel picados! Michelle & Sean say they still have to keep running their own race.

Kishori & Karishma decide to switch because they keep seeing teams lap them.

Juan & Shane are TEAM NUMBER FOUR! They plan to be like butterflies and spread their wings and don't underestimate their competition.

Chris & Mary popping balloons while Kishori & Karishma are absolutely exhausted. They are frazzled and return to the beach promenade while Chris & Mary forging ahead. K&K are in distress, can't find any purple balloons.

Karishma doesn't care if they need medical attention and someone like Amber & Vinny needing to rescucitate them. They see the purple ones while Chris & Mary are ahead.

Kish & Karish leave in 11th while Chris & Mary deliver their set in last.

Amber & Vinny and Angie & Danny arrive at the Roadblock in 7th and 8th. Amber and Danny do the task. Angie is about to have heat exhaustion while Anthony & Bailey are frazzled in the makeup. Michelle & Sean act like they never left in 10th. Michelle lightheartedly divulges about infertility and four kids. The heat's getting to everyone for sure.

Yvonne & Mel leave the RB in 6th.

Danny says painting mom's face is difficult because of the sweat. Chris & Mary sit down to rest while Chris is on the verge of vomiting. Mary checks up on him and realizes every second and step counts. They keep pushing.

Sunny & Bizzy keep checking, not seeing what they are missing. Beach Boys leave with the RB clue and ask where the Bridge of Love is. They are embarrassed to ask in that makeup and Anthony doesn't know who Elizabeth Taylor is. This is a chaotic duo.

On the flip side, Angie & Danny have a medic moment and Angie needs to lie down because the heat is getting to her moderately.

Amber & Vinny and Angie & Danny are side-by-side and switch from pavement to street because it's wider/closer. Anthony & Bailey are like two lost puppies.

Angie & Danny move more and Anthony & Bailey go down some stairs. Amber & Vinny realize the Pit Stop is under the bridge they are heading to.

Chris & Mary arrive at the RB. Michelle & Sean get a check while Kish & Karish are almost there. Double Dutch move on in 9th. Mary has expertise in makeup at home so hoping it gives them an advantage. Sunny & Bizzy still bizzy comparing the photo to Bizzy's "real estate".

And... Michelle & Sean arrive on the mat. Michelle assumes they are eliminated without even Phil saying anything. No eyebrow raise either. Phil gives them the news they aren't eliminated. 11TH PLACE!

Chris & Mary walk onto the mat and are last. They have been eliminated from the race. Mary is proud of his dad and is happy to be in the race in any capacity. Chris reminds Mary she is his everything. Mary says this is a dream come true.

I'm really glad we finally got to see this leg. I was really curious as to how they were incorporating the elements. As a Mexican who has been to Puerto Vallarta many times, I felt it was a great choice to make it walking-only in that area. The mountainous terrain and Zona Romántica is perfect for that.
I wish we got to see more of the papel picado, trying to make some would've been a great task. And the balloon side of the detour was just ok though it did gave us a great view of the area.
Where I had the most issues was with the RB. I mean, culturally, El Día de los Muertos is one of Mexico's most important traditions and it does not pertain to one specific area of the country, HOWEVER, the southern states do tend to lean more into it. And likewise, TAR could've done the same. For instance, the face design was pretty simple; there are many intricate beautiful designs that could've been used.

This is where I think the BIGGEST missed opportunity happened: This leg was filmed in Oct. 25th. El Día de los Muertos is Nov 1st-Nov 2nd. The monarch butterfly migration arrival begins during October, and the main sanctuaries are in the state of Michoacán, a state that also happens to have a stunning and famous night celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Michoacán is a neighbor state of Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is. I mean, it's not like it's an hour drive. But maybe a bus? Domestic charter flight? Even with the COVID restrictions and precautions they were taking I think it was very feasible.

I feel like they had it right there in their hands to have one of the most culturally relevant and accurate legs they've ever had. I'm sure there are other logistics in place and reasons why they do things the way they do it. But man. I always feel they could do more with the Mexico legs, so it doesn't feel like the usual vacation someone in the US would normally do anyway.

I dunno, I guess it felt cheap to have the monarch butterfly wings like that, and the Dia de los muertos task like that. In my head it will now reside as the leg that could've been.

Ah yes, that's true. Dunno if it was at the time, but it probably was with our political landscape at the moment. Guess I got caught up in the what-could-have-been since the time when this leg was first reported.

Still think they could've done a much more interesting tasks culturally and in design.

No less than 3 teams described themselves as underestimated this episode. I wonder if a team has ever said or believed they are overestimated. Maybe the Race should give out surveys early in the season asking teams to rate each other and then compare to actual results to see which teams do outperform their peers' expectations.

watched this ep and yeah this is def the case where the casts elevated the ep more than the leg itself.

the balloon detour was very lackluster and only served just to be a contrary to other side of detour (which we had the same archtype literally a leg ago), while the paper flag task was intriguingly challenging, but i wish the clue were more clear. I actually am fine with face painting rb since we hadn't one in a while, and a teammate getting sweaty made it harder to paint on.

the casts were definitely the stars here and it gave me so much vibe off tar 13, which was a very enjoyable season. while its def grating to me as viewers

it had also the charms that made the leg more enjoyable.
