Survivor 41 has begun airing, with the first episode aired last Thursday morning (Singapore time) while the Amazing Race has restarted filming its 33rd season.

Survivor 41 was filmed in Fiji in April, just before the COVID situation got worse worldwide. Cast and production members arrived in groups and were quarantined in Fiji for 14 days before filming began, and it was shot over 26 days instead of the usual 39 days. Unlike recent seasons, the contestants were divided into three tribes, last used in Season 35.

Meanwhile, the Amazing Race has restarted filming for Season 33, with Reality Fan Forum reporting that eight teams have been flown to Europe for the restart via a chartered private plane, with sightings of teams in Corsica, France, and Greece, and filming in Switzerland.

Filming for Season 33 had been paused at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, with three episodes filmed. It is uncertain if all the original teams will be on the race, with speculation that some eliminated teams might return, and how the original legs will be aired. COVID-19 will also affect the route, with most of Asia and Australia off-limits.

CBS has announced that The Amazing Race 33 will premiere on television starting from January 5th (Jan 6th Singapore time). Unlike previous seasons, CBS has not revealed the distance traveled nor the countries visited. According to spoilers, the United Kingdom, France, Greece, and Switzerland are among the countries visited, with the finale in Los Angeles.

This season is also the first season where 50% of the cast must be Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) following an incident involving a racist comment made against an Asian-American cast member on Big Brother, whose host is an Asian-American, Julie Chen-Moonves.

Season 33 had started filming just before the COVID-19 pandemic began, and paused filming in March 2020, pausing for more than 18 months before filming again in late-September 2021. Teams flew to destinations via private jet, and there was speculation that teams were provided with GPS maps and specially rented cars to avoid the use of public transport like taxis and reduce interaction with locals.

New alliance-sharing rules are believed to have been put in place for this season following last season’s fiascos involving the “Mine-Five” Alliance, with COVID-19 social distancing protocols also probably playing a part.

The Amazing Race has made its return to television, with the world deep into the COVID-19 pandemic that my friends and I thought would last the most 40 days? It’s been two years since then and we all have to adapt and so does the race, although the premiere and the next two episodes were shot pre-pandemic. The cast looks interesting, with what I believe to be a highly recruited cast. I suspect the show is on its last legs, although, thanks to the pandemic, with travel restricted, it has been a distraction of sorts. I have not cried for a long time, but watching the first few minutes of TAR 33 brought tears to my eyes.

The cast is headlined by the Holderness couple Kim & Penn, 2015 Thalys train attack heroes Anthony Sadler & Spencer Stone, and “Singing Cops” Michael Norwood & Moe Badger. Oh and a “couple” from another CBS show, this time even less famous than normal. Kim & Penn are also the first racers with ADHD and anxiety issues, they are the first racers with a mental disability since Zev from TAR 15.

Just like in Season 28, teams flew from their hometown to their first destination, London, England with a video message from Phil. When they landed in London, they made their way to Trafalgar Square and searched among 500 men dressed as phone boxes for their next clue. The clue at the phone boxes directed teams to Canada Gate at Buckingham Palace where teams found Phil and the detour. The Detour was Artist Den or Digiben. In Artist Den, teams assembled a mural to receive their next clue, while in Digiben, teams must find Bobby in Parliament Square along with Little Ben and DJ Digiben. After the detour, teams had to find “Queen Elizabeth” and “Boris Johnson” to get their next clue, which directed them to the pit stop.

Connie & Sam and Lulu & Lala fell behind early, putting them in a fight for last place. However, Michael & Moe made a mistake at the detour, starting to paste before assembling their mural.

It was a three-way race to the pit stop for first, with Anthony & Spencer, Raquel & Cayla, and Ryan & Dusty. Anthony & Spencer arrived first and won a trip to the Turks & Caicos, which hopefully they will be able to take when they finally get their prize. Michael & Moe almost caught up, but they got lost, allowing Lulu & Lala to catch up, and they were eliminated from the race.

This leg and the previous leg aired as part of a two-hour premiere. Many have said that this leg feels kind of rushed, like the producers were trying to film as many legs as possible before any COVID lockdown and trying to keep contestants in the United Kingdom for ease of travel. Personally, I think they should have done Leg 2 as a hybrid England/Scotland countryside leg, then have Leg 3 in Glasgow.

The race continued in London, England with teams making their way to the Mail Rail at the London Post Office Railway. There the first Roadblock of the race required teams to search through thousands of envelopes and packages for one displaying the TAR logo. Penn & Ray begin overthinking the Roadblock and are stuck.

Teams then travel to Leicester Square, The Detour was Bullseye, Mate or Decorate. In Bullseye, teams are given three darts and must hit a bullseye on each attempt to get their next clue. In Decorate, teams must arrange fruit on a cake to mimic a country in the European Union (France & Germany). To everyone’s surprise, Norway is not a European Union nation, and neither is Britain (Brexit occurred just before they started filming, on Feb 1, 2020).

There is a five-way race to the pit stop as teams faced taxi troubles to due road works & the bad weather. The next clue directs teams to Phil at Russell Square Tube Station where they will have a cup of tea with Phil…and it’s a Keep on Racing leg.

In an emotional scene at the end of Leg 3, teams were told that the Amazing Race would be suspended, with five remaining teams plus
Show content
the two eliminated teams
restarting the race 19 months later in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Teams traveled from London, England to Glasgow, Scotland, and then drove to their next route marker, where they faced a Roadblock to assemble a bagpipe and play a tune. While the Roadblock was straightforward, several teams had trouble navigating there and driving a stick shift, with Caro & Ray and Akbar & Sheridan having trouble, and the teachers fell to the back of the pack.

The Detour was interesting, with a choice of joining a group of kids in singing a “popular” Scottish tune while wearing kilts or repairing whiskey barrels. However, some complained that the leg left out much of Scotland, which I agree with. For the record, most Singaporeans have never crossed Marina Bay Sands on a tightrope, undergone Chinese cupping therapy, or play Chinese drums. Most Singaporeans love chill crab and ice cream though.

Kim & Penn rocked the leg, running a relatively faultless leg to win a trip to Cape Cod. Arun struggled in this leg, especially at the detour, allowing Akbar & Sheridan to pull off an unlikely comeback and the father/daughter team was eliminated from the race.

At the pit stop, Phil met the teams with the announcement that filming would be suspended due to the spreading coronavirus pandemic (having canceled a leg in Sweden, and with the race due to visit Northern Italy). 19 long months later…

The first post-COVID Amazing Race episode aired on Wednesday (Thursday morning Singapore time), and it was no different than other episodes, apart from the social distancing, the relative remoteness of the area, and the lack of crowds.

However, I didn’t exactly like the editing, especially the part where they edited out a historic task, a first-ever double Speed Bump involving the returned eliminated teams, which involved rolling a large zorb ball designed to look like a cabbage to knock haystacks. Although you have to admit they did do a good job.

Michael & Moe and Akbar & Sheridan returned to the race, as Isaiah & Taylor, Caro & Ray, Connie & Sam, and Anthony & Spencer were unable to return for the restart. Anthony was promoted to a new job and unable to take leave and Caro was unable to return for the race as the borders were closed to non-US citizens (Caro is German). Meanwhile, Connie was pregnant during the race filming (delivering a healthy baby boy in December) while there were personal losses among the cast, as Taylor lost his brother to COVID just before the restart.

From the restart line, Teams traveled via chartered bus to a gondola station, before taking a gondola to the top of Mount Santis where they faced a Roadblock. There, one team member must use a special climbing route to climb down to their next clue. Sheridan struggled during the roadblock due to her fear of heights and the bad weather.

The Detour involved either memorizing a flag routine or making a pattern on a belt buckle. Ryan & Dusty and Penn & Kim aced the flag detour, and Ryan & Dusty beat Penn & Kim to the pit stop to win the leg and US$2,500. Both Arun & Natalia and Michael & Moe chose the belt buckle detour, and this was what put them behind, but the Speed Bump was edited out. This allowed Akbar & Sheridan to catch up and avoid elimination for the second leg in a row. Michael & Moe failed to catch up and became the first-ever Amazing Race team to be eliminated twice.

The race continued in Switzerland with teams leaving for Leg 5 in groups of two in intervals of fifteen minutes. The first clue told teams to drive to Verzasca Dam, home to a Roadblock in Season 14. Teams now faced the same Roadblock in a “Switchback” this time also including the Travelocity Gnome as a companion.

The long drive (especially if you were Arun & Natalia) was enough to pressure and frighten racers including Kim & Sheri, and we get to see a contrast between Penn and Akbar. Where Penn was reassuring, Akbar was demanding and at the same time, seen by viewers as too harsh on Sheri. It was mostly played for laughs in the show, and some of the online hate has gone too far.

The Detour was a choice between delivering 12 bottles of wine and 12 bags of chestnuts to a party at the end of a long staircase or making Swiss sausage. For the first Detour, teams were not allowed to use their bags or their clothing to help them. With the frontrunners also struggling, this allowed Lulu & Lala who did the sausage, to catch up. Personally, I would have done the sausage Detour, as I always wanted to learn how to cook. I don’t think I could have done the roadblock.

Ryan & Dusty won their second leg in the row and won a Travelocity-sponsored trip to Dominica. Meanwhile, Arun & Natalia, who were behind in this leg, were given their second reprieve of the race as this leg was a non-elimination leg. There is no news about a Speed Bump, but they will be in the last group to depart.

The Amazing Race 33 teams traveled to Corsica, France, where Ryan & Dusty finally struggled but managed to overcome a mistake at the Detour as Akbar & Sheri were eliminated from the race.

Teams were flown from Switzerland to France during the Pit Stop and were released in Corsica, France in three groups, with last-placed Arun & Natalia beginning with a 15-minute handicap and no Speed Bump. Considering that they were hours behind at the previous Pit Stop, this kind of feels unfair but understandable from a production point of view.

Teams faced a Detour at the first route marker, a choice of making cheese or leading a mule through a mountain path. Dusty claimed to know how to make cheese, and they were joined by Lulu & Lala, while the other all-girl team, Raquel & Cayla, followed Penn & Kim to do the mules. While Lulu & Lala were able to get cheese, the boys struggled and eventually switched Detours. To be fair, I would probably do the same.

The Roadblock for this leg was to clear an obstacle course through the mountain and river. Kim & Penn maintained their lead and kept their lead in the final task, which involved kayaking to the Pit Stop, and won US$5,000. Lulu & Lala’s failure to read their clue, which told them to keep their bags in their car, put them behind, allowing Ryan & Dusty, Arun & Natalia to catch up and giving Akbar & Sheri a chance. Ultimately, the Married Educators were too far behind and were eliminated from the race.

The Amazing Race 33 continued in Corsica, France, as teams ate wormy cheese and Arun & Natalia again finished last in a non-elimination leg.

This leg was relatively linear and there was not much of a chance for teams to catch up. Even Ryan & Dusty’s mistakes in the Detour were not enough to affect their position, as the other detour involved a fixed amount of time.

Teams opened the leg by eating casu marzu, a type of cheese that contains maggots. This task is controversial, as it is illegal to prepare and eat the cheese in the European Union, as well as the United States. It is also illegal to serve them as prison food.

The Detour involved rowing a boat or matching fish charts, riding a boat to identify ten fish. While the first detour was physical, the second detour involved riding a cruise ship with a fixed schedule, and teams had to ride the boat a second time should they not get it right the first time, giving Ryan & Dusty an advantage.

It is this leg that we see that working together doom two teams. Raquel & Cayla had the chance to get a first-place finish by doing the boat rowing Detour, while Arun & Natalia were unable to make up the time against Lulu & Lala. If I were Raquel or Cayla, I would have picked the boat rowing detour. The Roadblock, involving repairing fishing nets, didn’t trip up any teams once they mastered the technique. Penn & Kim won a trip to Antalya, Turkey, while Arun & Natalia will depart last in the next leg.

Teams traveled to Halkidiki, Greece, where they made stuffed dolmas and took part in a theology memorization lesson. Lulu & Lala were eliminated in this leg, leaving us with a final four. With two legs left, this is the shortest race since TAR 13 and is also the earliest teams were down to their final four since Season 30, the last season with a final four non-elimination.

Once again, teams boarded their private jet and were flown from Corsica to Thessaloniki, Greece, before being told to drive themselves to an olive grove to pick up their next clue among the olive trees. This clue directed them to a vineyard, where they found themselves at a Roadblock making dolmades. I’ve had it before, at a Turkish restaurant in Singapore. It’s meat or vegetables stuffed inside cabbage or in this case, grape leaves.

This led them to a second Route Info task where teams had to order and eat souvlaki, a Greek wrap containing meat and vegetables. I liked the fact that they had to correctly spell the word, and after eating, retrieve the clue from the wrapper. While most teams figured it out quickly, Lulu & Lala struggled, even after eating the souvlaki twice. The poor ladies struggled in this leg with directions and reading the clue. Earlier, they surprisingly made it to the pit stop, only to be told to turn back.

The second Roadblock involved the team member who didn’t do the previous Roadblock to memorize and answer five questions involving Greek Orthodox Saints. Here Penn’s ADHD and his ability to “hyperfocus” proved useful, allowing him to solve the roadblock with ease. Penn & Kim won the leg easily, winning US$7,500 each. Lulu & Lala failed to make up time against Arun & Natalia, and the twins were eliminated from the race.

The Amazing Race continues in Thessaloniki, Greece as Arun & Natalia avoid falling in last place for once, as Ryan & Dusty fell to last place and rock bottom after struggling with the Roadblock. Arun & Natalia avoid breaking an unwanted record of non-elimination saves held by Kaylynn & Haley from last season. At the moment, the record is shared between them and The Amazing Race Asia’s Terri & Henry, Deng Ziqi & Zhang Yunjing from TAR China, and Juan & Cecilia from TAR Latin America.

During the Pit Stop, teams were able to use the Travelocity App to book their night’s accommodation and enjoyed a good night’s rest at the hotel of their choice. The first clue told teams to drive to Thessaloniki, where they must find an outdoor theatre. Teams face a Roadblock where they must find one of five coins hidden among a sea of 5,000 stones. The coins are drilled into the rocks and they cannot move the rocks or mark them in any way.

It is here Kim & Penn finally lost their lead as all three remaining teams caught up. My first thought watching this leg was that this was the perfect season for a mass quit, I mean what can the producers do if a racer decides to quit? While all teams struggle with the Roadblock, Ryan & Dusty spend almost three hours doing it, and we get to see the human side of Ryan as he calmed Dusty down.

Raquel & Cayla finish the roadblock first, and after an encounter with “Socrates”, get their Detour clue. The detour was a choice between transporting 300 plates or smashing plates and not surprisingly, all the teams chose to smash plates, with Kim & Penn excited and with Dusty saying that it helped with his aggression. Raquel & Cayla maintain their lead and win their first leg and a trip to Kauai, Hawaii. Despite Arun & Natalia getting lost, Ryan & Dusty didn’t manage to make up time, and they were the last team to arrive, but this leg was a Non-Elimination Leg and they remain in the race.

In last week's two-hour Amazing Race finale, teams raced through Setubal, Portugal where returning team Arun & Natalia were eliminated before heading to their final destination, Los Angeles, California, where Kim & Penn won the US$1,000,000 prize.

Leg 10 saw teams face a second Double-Roadblock leg. In the first Roadblock, teams had to search among rowboats for one of four carrying the name of a famous Portuguese explorer and row across the marina for their next clue. Arun said at the start of the leg that there was no room for error, and indeed, fell behind to Ryan, who beat him to the correct rowboat.

The next task was an Active Route Info, which required teams to select a sardine can and use it to paint a door according to the pattern. Ryan & Dusty failed to realize their mistake of not painting their doorknob, although it appears that Arun & Natalia also made the same mistake but were approved.

Raquel & Cayla held a slim lead over Kim & Penn but struggled after losing their clue and map. They managed to get a replacement map, but lose their lead over Kim & Penn. In the second Roadblock, teams must count the total number of columns, but from within a vantage point, taking advantage of the perspective given. Cayla got it on the first attempt, regaining their lead and giving them their second first place, and winning a trip to Saint Lucia for her team.

Ryan & Dusty held a slim lead over Arun & Natalia, defeating them for a spot in the final three, and Arun & Natalia were eliminated.

During Leg 10’s pit stop, all three teams were flown back to Los Angeles, California, and began the Amazing Race 33 finale on an equal footing at the helipad of the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. Teams had to locate a clue box at one of three cylinders and spot the combination on the elevator. Ryan & Dusty fell behind when they decided to ride the elevator instead.

Raquel & Cayla and Kim & Penn progressed to the next location where they must smash pinatas to get their next clue, which is divided into three. Both teams have the smart strategy of grabbing the clues afterward instead of blindly holding everything at once. Raquel & Cayla keep their lead, and they must now travel to a studio where they must become a foley artist and recreate some of TAR’s not-so iconic moments. This task is familiar to Kim & Penn, who are podcast hosts, and they narrow Raquel & Cayla’s lead. It all comes down to a memory challenge which Kim & Penn overcome and they are “game, set, and match” and Amazing Race champions!

This season was surprisingly enjoyable despite the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic and provided a form of escape for those unable to travel and respite from the pandemic. They also visited places like Corsica, which was last visited in Season 6, and Portugal, which was last in Season 23.

My only complaint was that the second leg should have been in Scotland, and the finale could have been in a different city, as the private jet opened possibilities, but the producers managed to highlight an unknown part of Los Angeles and paid a nice tribute to the people behind the scenes with the foley task. I liked the overall cast, would have loved to see more of the four teams that dropped out (yes, even Caro & Ray), although the two African-American all-male teams felt too similar and generic to me.

I didn't get the feel like Taylor & Isaiah were the same as Michael & Moe. Both were viral stars, yeah, but the former had the more outgoing personalities.

I'll take your word for it but from what I watched from both teams I don't see what was different about the two of them. I also don't get why CBS would cast two teams with similar backgrounds. The only thing I got from Michael & Moe was that they screwed up to be eliminated twice in two legs, while I don't remember anything about Taylor & Isaiah.
