I'm thankful this is a regular season again. It feels great to get back into what The Apprentice is all about.

I assume this is a regular season - at least, that's what I read.
I thought that when we fought, I was to blame
Now I know you play a different game
I've seen you dance with danger; still wanting more
Add another number to the score

The Apprentice Season 10, ep. 1

Donald Trump is back with a twist on the usual non-celebrity version of the Apprentice. He decided to focus it on those laid off during the current recession. Here is the cast of Apprentice 10, Second Chance:

Tyana Alvarado Age: 41 Hometown: Miami, FL Career: Unemployed real estate agent and title-holder of "Miss Cougar California"

Kelly Smith Beaty Age: 30 Hometown: Fayetteville, GA Career: Unemployed public relations professional

Poppy Carlig Age: 24 Hometown: Richmond, CA Career: Recent college graduate

Stephanie Castagnier Age: 34 Hometown: Chicago, IL Career: Non-profit founder

Nicole Chiu Age: 27 Hometown: Palos Verdes, CA Career: Unemployed attorney

Alex Delgado Age: 43 Hometown: Santa Ynez, CA Career: Truck driver and unemployed mechanical engineer.

Gene Folkes Age: 46 Hometown: Wylie, Texas Career: Entrepreneur

Wade Hanson Age: 33 Hometown: Woodbury, MN Career: Realtor

David Johnson Age: 34 Hometown: Portage, MI Career: Unemployed account manager and part-time stand-up comedian

Brandy Kuentzel Age: 30 Hometown: San Francisco, CA Career: Corporate attorney turned cupcake entrepreneur

Steuart Martens Age: 27 Hometown: Washington, DC Career: Entrepreneur

Liza Mucheru-Wisner Age: 30 Hometown: Corpus Christi, TX Career: Entrepreneur and part-time aerobics instructor

Clint Robertson Age: 40 Hometown: Austin, TX Career: Unemployed accountant and real estate attorney

Mahsa Saeidi-Azcuy Age: 29 Hometown: Brooklyn, NY Career: Assistant District Attorney and online TV host

Anand Vasudev Age: 31 Hometown: Tampa, FL Career: Entrepreneur

James Weir Age: 31 Hometown: New York, NY Career: Unemployed attorney and volunteer

These individuals are hungry and you can bet thirsty for blood whenever they can gain an advantage over their competition. It's going to be brutal!

Trump added that all the above are victims of the recession and that the show will be spread over 13 weeks. This was a 2-hour opening show to introduce the cast and succeeded as such. Future episodes appear to be only 1 hour, which based on what I observed of Celebrity Apprentice 2 was an excellent decision. Trump tells the team of men and the team of women to go and create a team name and nominate their Project Manager (hereinafter P.M.) for the first task.

The men were able to agree on Octane for their name. They considered Phoenix (as did the women) but neither chose it. Nobody volunteered to be first task P.M.for the men, so gene stepped up. for the women, they liked the name Fortitude (a 4-syllable mouthful compared to 2-syllable Octane). Nicole volunteered for P.M. and was acceptable to her team. Historically on the Apprentice, I believe that the winning first task P.M. has received a better reward than most of the later tasks, so volunteering to be first is smart.  Both teams rejoined Trump, who introduced them to his Eyes and Ears, his children Donald Jr. and recently married Ivanka.

The task will be turning some vacant space on the first floor of buildings in the Soho district (South of Houston, one of the more funky ones in New York City) into more usable office space suitable for a variety of different types of offices. The evaluation criteria include originality, functionality and execution. Donald Trump himself, an expert in NYC real estate, will be the sole judge of this task. He stated that the prize for the winning PM is really special and it is reasonable to expect that he will make good on that promise.

The teams get to their assigned spaces, which are different but share the characteristics of open with lots of windows and high ceilinged lofts. Gene started with the concept of Open Office space as the guiding design principle. He wants the walls repainted in brighter colors, green plants brought in and the open nature of the space maintained. One of his teammates said “Gene had no idea what that meant.”

Tyana and Poppy were asked to join Nicole on some mission. Mahsa, obviously pissed at getting left out of the action, s critical of that. Tyana, who had the only real estate background among Fortitude, volunteered to select the colors since her knowledge of spaces is better than the rest.

Architectural Renderers come for about 3 hours to examine the space and turn the concepts their assign team is discussing into drawings. Anand and James sat with the man doing this for Octane.

Brandy and Tyana stayed behind for supplies for painting and cleaning. Both team elected to focus early attention on getting all gunk off the windows and one or more fresh coats of paint on all walls. Nicole and Stefanie took responsibility for the electronics.

Gene wanted to order trees, flowers and plants. He assigned that to David, who also had another assignment to complete first. Clint attempted to steal the developed list of who to call and this led to a serious confrontation.

Ivanka arrived to check on progress, which she deemed quite slow. In an aside, she said that she would not want to be the P.M. who lost on this task with The Donald the sole judge. Since Gene was away, it was James who greeted her, answered questions and gave her a tour and overview of the Octane design principles.

A delegation from Octane visited Cort Furniture Rental and promptly ordered 4 desks and 8 chairs. Another delegation from Fortitude also visited Cort and Tyana whizzed through and got the job done in 45 minutes. Nicole was very impressed and  stated that her opinion of Tyana had shifted from least useful to most useful. Don Jr. happened to be visiting then and recorded in his memory that shift.

Mahsa, recognizing that not contributing visibly to the team effort creates many risks if fortitude should lose, decided to pitch in on menial labor. The following day she insisted on being part of a delegation buying things where she was totally superfluous. She apparently wanted to claim “credit” wherever possible to protect herself from being backstabbed. Now, who would want to back stab an acid tongued viper like her?
Nicole liked white leather partitions so they ordered some for where there were no walls but space separation was still needed but flexible. Tyana insisted on adding a touch of class by adding a portrait of a businessman from many decades back.

Don Jr. visited the Fortitude space in the hour before their presentation.  He deemed it a mess and that the leadership on fortitude was insufficient.

James had taken a lot of artistic license in painting bold angles and colors on the walls. Gene did not like them, but it was too late to take them off. James had to finish u in the same style. Gene noted that rugs needed to be moved and the furniture did not arrive until 30 minutes before presentation time. The end result, according to a biased Anand, was a beautiful work space.

Fortitude was ready for the presentation. Trump arrived and was greeted by Tyana who led him to Nicole. Nicole showed him around. He gave no hint of his real observations. The same happened with the Octane presentation.

It’s time for the first Boardroom of Apprentice10. Trump revealed that he did not really like either space very much, so there was no clear winner. However, he might still choose to award a victory to the better team. Gene was reminded that the rugs in one room were not taped down and a cameraman had a nasty fall which could have been serious. David said he was proud of Gene by the end even though they were at odds earlier.

Trump asked Gene who was his team’s weakest link. He tried to avoid answering that questions but Trump wasn’t letting him off the hook. He said David or James. Trump asked about conflict and was told there was major conflict between Clint and David. David said he tried to pick up the ball when Clint was called away on Audio-Visual work. Trump observed that Clint was the only member of Octane without a tie. He strongly recommended that Clint rethink that, as all job applicants were dressing formally these days.

Nicole was asked by Trump what she thought of her contributions to her team. Tyana jumped in to state that Nicole did not lead or manage. Brandy said that Nicole is a leader, but preferred the delegation style. Mahsa jumped in with great intensity (typical of the legal profession) and accused Nicole of  critical errors, ignoring Tyana’s advice and being off doing minor things for the 3 hours when the architectural renderer visited. She would have gone on forever but Trump finally decided to cut her off rather emphatically.
It is obvious that Mahsa hated Nicole, but what difference would it make to her?

Trump disliked the old painting because it clashed with the type of building concept they were trying to get across. Trump liked the TV on the wall over the Octane space conference room. He thought that conference room was small (seating 6) but Octane members defended that design with evidence that there were other spaces to achieve the same purpose.

Don Jr. and Ivanka both weigh on for the Octane space and Trump says they are right. He declared Octane the winner because it was more modern and had a cooler feel. P.M. Gene will be the first winning P.M. to get the one-on-one coaching advice of top business leaders around the country and he has the privilege of receiving his from Donald Trump.

Octane was excused to watch the first part of the ongoing Boardroom from their suite. Trump asked Tyana why Fortitude lost? Her response was lack of leadership. Lisa said the creative aspects (designs and colors) were off. Design decisions were made by either Tyana or Nicole. Trump asked Brandy who he should fire and she responded Nicole.  Trump addressed the women and it plain English told them they were killers! He has never done that to my knowledge and I have seen every Apprentice episode. Ivanka told Trump in an aside that Mahsa was brutal (as if he had not already figured that out for himself). Trump asked Poppy who he should fire and she responded that nobody did a bad job. Lisa said ultimately the responsibility was with Nicole as P.M. Nicole was asked which 2 fortitude members she would bring back to round 2 in the boardroom but that did not happen yet. Mahsa claimed innocence by stating that “I did everything,” having deliberately gotten her finger into a little bit of many different pies. Nicole was excused of not defending herself and of all her team piling on. Now the others are excused and it is Mahsa, Tyana and Nicole in the Boardroom with the 3 Trumps and cameras.

Mahsa is whining that she does not understand why she is there. How about because you are incredibly obnoxious and who wouldn’t take the opportunity to get rid of you?

Nicole stated that now she will defend herself since the time is right. She said she led by collaboration and delegation, but her teammates were not prepared for those responsibilities and wanted somebody to tell them what to do so they could focus on execution and keep low profiles. She accused Tyana and Mahsa of not being team players. I though this was a little harsh on Tyana but right on for Mahsa. Ivanka told Mahsa that she is a bit of an abrasive personality. She asked Nicole why she did not regroup as a leader. Nicole then makes a big mistake. She stated that Mahsa’s sin is disloyal but the individual who should be fired is Tyana. Don Jr. tells how Nicole changed her assessment of Tyana from negative to positive between day 1 and day 2, so we are now seeing another position on the Nicole assessment of Tyana. I think that was the nail in the coffin. Nicole said that she hated the painting which helped bring her down. Trump fired Nicole.

In the post-mortem, Trump said that he really like Nicole and considers her a leader. He would contact the Miss Universe pageant to set up an interview for her. The main reason to be on Apprentice 10 is the opportunity to network with sponsors, executives and guest stars to expand their networking base and create potential new career opportunities. It sounds like Trump is delivering on those to help these individuals.

My wife and I thought Mahsa was totally obnoxious and that trump should have gone outside normal bounds to get rid of her ASAP, but unfortunately ti did not happen. The Project Manager is most often the individual fired from the losing team.

I was amused at Gene's special prize being face time with Trump himself, but that is surely valuable..

I too was hoping Mahsa would be the one fired. Too bad it did not happen. She was totally obnoxious and likes to magnify the things she did and negatively criticized Nicole's leadership.

Nicole, however, did a lot of things wrong, and that was why all the stacks were against her. Duh, it's always a huge risk to be the 1st PM. You have little information to go when delegating and taking leadership. Add to the fact that this is a recession themed season (which I love), it's obvious they are going on an all-out war. Everyone would do just about anything to keep themselves safe and get out of spotlight, which was why they all threw Nicole out of the bus. I thought Poppy was Nicole's closest person (just from the edit, I don't know much else), but I think Poppy stayed on the safe side and also threw her under the bus.

Nicole made more mistakes in the boardroom. Especially that last defend she made, saying Trump should fire Tiyana when earlier she said Tiyana was their MVP. She was doing well fighting to stay in until that moment. She should've thrown Mahsa under the bus.

Trump did say he'll open an interview for Nicole in the Ms Universe Pageant. I wish good luck to her.  :)

A10, ep. 2

Fortitude is ecstatic that their first Project Manager is gone, although Nicole in my opinion was much more competent than many of those remaining on her team. They decided that Poppy would be their next P.M.

Octane accepted David’s volunteering to be their P.M. although they were forewarned by his autocratic style and abrasive nature in the first episode.

Trump gathered the competitors outside to tell them their next assignment was a 2 day effort selling ice cream anywhere they wished in New York City. He dropped the fairly insipid term “Eyes and Ears” and referred to Don Jr. and George Ross as his “Advisors.”

James as a New Yorker was asked for his recommendation on the location for the Octane ice cream sales effort. The teams both decided to go to Union Square as their site for sales. Octane picked an initial site around 930am but saw low traffic there and decided to move to another part of that park. The women, when they arrived around 10am, took the men’s previous spot.

David correctly assessed this task as pure sales, so he expected that those with sales experience would be the most effective at selling ice cream. Steuart was very aggressive and Anand, Wade, Gene and Clint were moderately successful. James and Alex were much less aggressive, with lower skill at sales and much less success. The sales effort for Fortitude was driven totally by Stephanie. Sales for Octane tailed off late morning, so they sent two of their team to a nearby store to buy costumes, red and white vests, white hats indicative of a barbershop quartet and a yellow wig. Fortitude similarly bought pink tank tops. After the lunch crowd had dissipated, sales were so slow that Octane decided to move elsewhere. Once again, James came to the rescue with Father Demo Square, a vest pocket park at Father Demo Square at Avenue of the Americas, Bleecker St. and Carmine St., over a mile from Union Square. Donald Jr. arrived at Fortitude late in the day and observed that the women had not found the best spot for their cart, since close by was a heavily trafficked subway entrance/exit to which they should have been located closer

A variety of sales techniques were used, but after some experimentation it evolved for both teams into a fixed price that was in the $3 to $5. New Yorkers typically resisted pricing above $5 for such a snack. The women used their sex appeal to sell and the men were attractive to passing females, so this selling factor was somewhat equalized.

On day 2, the team returned to Union Square. Again Octane went back to their original spot that had been taken over by the women. The women arrived and tried to pressure the men to move, but that was fiercely resisted. Nearing the close of the sales period, the women had a substantial inventory of ice cream left and Tyana of Fortitude came up with the strategy of giving it away to prevent Octane from closing any sales. This was controversial but appeared to work.

On to the Boardroom! Trump started with Fortitude and asked Poppy who was her weakest link. Poppy said there was no weak link but the least strong member of her team was Lisa. Lisa was then asked if Poppy was a good P.M. and she correctly responded that Stephanie was the real P.M. for their team. Trump continued with some questions for other members of Fortitude and then precipitously said “Lisa, you’re fired” before stating that he was just kidding. He added that the winning team had not even been announced yet. However, since Trump has absolute control (except for the need to listen to producer Mark Burnett), that could have happened. He also stated that sales is a key task in any enterprise and that developing good to excellent sales skills is something anyone who wants to get ahead must do.

David was then asked who was his weakest link and he said Alex under certain conditions and James under other conditions. Both were weak salesmen. I was disappointed that James remained mostly silent here, as he had done a lot in selecting sites and in finding the costumes. It was clear from David’s categorization that he would rather keep Alex than James that James had been in conflict with David in the first episode, as the better choice would have been the opposite.

Trump next revealed the results of the sales effort, $1500 for one team and $1800 for another. Fortitude had won despite having one less team member. They were joyous and dismissed from the Boardroom. Poppy was told she would have private time with Jack Welch (even more famous than Trump) as her reward for being P.M. of the winning team. I would have liked to have known how the pricing strategies of the teams varied. The way to get at that would have been to report actual bars sold as well as sales dollars so an average price could b determined. My guess is that the women won because they had a higher average price, not because they sold more bars, but we’ll never know.

All Octane members but David, James and Alex were dismissed by Trump. He and Donald Jr. then focused on the mentality of “the killers” I have to say that the only killers I saw among the six people there were both named Trump. Trump decided to fire Alex because his limited sales skills would not allow him to progress much further in this competition.

In a postscript, Alex was shown as having a new position with Rockport Corp. It looks like we are going to see as we go along just how Trump is helping the competitors on Apprentice 10.

I totally disagree. Apprentice 9 (Celebrity edition 3) was always way too long with 2 hour episodes and had lot's of padding as a result.

'Apprentice' Contestant Mahsa Saeidi-Azcuy Quits Real Job
by Elizabeth Chan, posted Sep 30th 2010 3:00PM

Tough-as-nails 'Apprentice' contestant Mahsa Saeidi-Azcuy has put the nails in her own coffin, killing her career as a Brooklyn assistant district attorney. But could this mean good things for down the road on 'The Apprentice'?

In a situation more fitting for an episode of 'Law and Order,' Saeidi-Azcuy resigned after being recognized during her real-life job as an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, N.Y.

This season of 'The Apprentice' purported to feature workers suffering from the effects of a down economy; the contestants were assumed to be unemployed. So, it was surprising when viewers were introduced to a gainfully-employed ADA vying for a job at the Trump Organization.

Apparently, none were more surprised than her own boss, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes.

Saiedi-Azcuy had requested and received a two-month unpaid leave of absence from her responsibilities as an ADA to tape 'The Apprentice' in New York City over the summer. She ultimately returned in the fall to her courtroom duties.

However, according to Jerry Schmetter, a spokesperson from the Brooklyn DA's office, Saeidi-Azcuy's participation on the national reality show was a total surprise to her boss and colleagues.

"If we had known [about her participation] we would not have granted her leave," Schmetter told TV Squad in a phone interview. "The DA has a trust in people, that an unpaid absence must be something that wouldn't put the office in a bad spot and are usually taken for medical and personal reasons."

"We didn't know," Schmetter said. "There was a story in the New York Daily News on Aug. 27, and it was only then it became general knowledge."

Saeidi-Azcuy was quickly reassigned to the Early Case Assessment Bureau, a department outside of the courtroom. Unhappy with the change, Saeidi-Azcuy submitted her resignation this week. Her last day will be Friday.

Although 'The Apprentice's' season is only a few weeks old, Saeidi-Azcuy was immediately recognized by jurors after the season's first two episodes had aired. Mahsa has already become known as the new Omarosa, proving to be an unpopular contestant with Ivanka Trump, her project first manager Nicole and pretty much anyone who gets in her way.

On her notoriety, Shmetter said, "It's not necessarily a good thing, it's not necessarily a bad thing. No problem has come out of this. We thought that it would present some conflicts and it is our responsibility is to prevent [any problems]."

Her resignation leads us to wonder if Saeidi-Azcuy's may be an 'Apprentice' contestant for many more weeks -- and possibly even a finalist. (Though if she had won 'the Apprentice,' would she bother going back to work at all?)

In an interview today in the New York Law Journal, Saeidi-Azcuy denied winning the show. "I left my job because I couldn't really be in a courtroom any more. Absolutely, I did not quit my job because I won the show. [People] will have to tune in and see," she said. "I can say for the first time in my life that I don't have a plan. I think I will be fine. I'm an incredibly hard worker. I'm incredibly driven. There's nothing but good things in my future."

Having every opportunity to crib Trump's signature "You're Fired," the Brooklyn DA's office instead accepted her resignation.

"We wish her luck,' said Schmetter.

ugot2bekidnmeny,

Nice find with that Mahsa article! I predict she will last a long time on Apprentice 10, maybe to the Final 5. She it tough and has a combative disposition that make her persona non grata with her teammates, but Trump and Mark Burnett no doubt protected her due to the ratings impact of her controversial personality.

A10, ep.3

This episode opened with all 3 Trumps presenting the task and evaluation criteria. It is to take over a dog grooming and daycare center in Manhattan for a multi-day period, develop new programs to increase its business and redecorate it. The criteria for judging are value-added features, execution and overall experience of the judges. The judges are the owners of the two grooming/care centers plus the famous Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan. The Project Managers are James and Tyana.

Octane meets Suresh, owner of the NY Center for Dogs. David immediately suggested a major revamp to the entrance to the building and there is agreement on Wade’s idea that a videocam so dog owners can view their pets inside the center is an important feature they want to add. David was sent off to pick up something with 2 other Octane members, but on return found that James had changed his mind about whether the entrance improvements are feasible in the time frame, This led to the first of two major confrontations between David and James, with James urging David to not fold his tent, take his marbles and run, but that is what James did.

Fortitude met with Dale the manager of their facility. Stephanie asked the best question, what was the slowest day of the week so Fortitude can target the program Tailwag Tuesdays to add business that day (which assumes that Tuesday, the day in question, was actually one of the days for this task, which fortunately for Fortitude it was).

Donald Jr. and Ivanka arrived relatively early in the task. Mahsa told Donald Jr. that she was afraid of dogs and should not have been given the assignment of caring for them in the back. Ivanka found James’ vision for the project lacking clarity and hoped he would find it quickly. Wade was given an assignment by James that did not fit his background as the individual on Octane with the most dog-related experience. James elected to ignore a request from Suresh the owner for consultation because he wanted to finish a meeting with Octane. Was that a smart move since Suresh would be judging him? Not really!

Fortitude had issues with Liza, who was handling the critical advertising artwork and its transfer to the external printing function. Critical time was lost when a mini hard disk had to be hand-carried over to the printer to get the job done.

Cesar Milan came and inspected both operations. James’ presentation to him was not better than James had done to Ivanka earlier, causing several of his teammates including Wade to try to take over. Caesar noted the resulting chaos and stated that it was a sign of bad direction to the dogs, since there was no clear pack leader (a major Dog Whisperer key concept for those that have seen his TV show). Cesar did think the webcams were an excellent idea. What he told Donald Trump was not shared on camera.

Trump then held the Boardroom and started in dissecting Octane to discover what had happened to its leadership and why. James did not look good and David was clearly established as a major thorn in the P.M.’s side and if course nominated as its weakest link. Gene supported James in the contention that firing David was necessary to maintain  the stability of Octane on this task. James displayed the binder clip that David had wanted to waste critical time on after gene had forgotten it and David wanted to complete his personal vision of the grand entrance. Clint brought up the issue of ignoring Suresh the owner, which Donald Jr. and Ivanka both pounced on to make the point that James had lost valuable planning information.

The same type of discussion on Fortitude established that most of the team believed Liza was its weakest link. Additional discussion ended with Trump telling Liza that she has to live with these bitches.”

The results were finally shared with the teams. Fortitude had won. Steuart did not absolve James of culpability for his mistakes, but he underscored that David’s insubordination had a major negative impact on Octane as well as on Suresh. Trump stated the obvious, that such insubordination reflects baldy on one’s leadership ability. Ivanka stated that the two reasons Octane lost were a bad team dynamic and a focus on the task rather than the business.

Octane eventually had James nominating David and Wade to remain in the Boardroom and the rest were excused. Wade had no business being there, so there was no he was essentially an innocent bystander. He was asked who Trump should fire and clearly stated it should be James. The issue was whether James’ less-than-sterling project management was more responsible or less for the loss than David’s deliberate sabotage. Trump told James he was disappointed with him and told David that his being a wise ass was troubling but not why he was in the boardroom. Trump fired James, as the losing P.M. frequently has to go down with the ship.

David survived but has done himself no favors in being singled out as insubordinate and difficult to manage. Are those qualities that Trump is looking for in an Apprentice?

James indicated in the postscript that he had a new job in the New York State Attorney General’s Office, presumably in the New York city area.

The latest on Mahsa form today's New York Post:

Brooklyn prosecutor who quit DA's office got raves before 'The Apprentice'

By MITCHEL MADDUX

Last Updated: 6:07 AM, October 2, 2010

Even before she caught Donald Trump’s eye, Mahsa Saeidi-Azcuy got two thumbs up from the Brooklyn DA.

The telegenic young attorney, now featured on Trump’s “The Apprentice,” had become an instant Internet star, featured in films about the DA’s anti-crime initiatives.

“I did videos for the DA’s Office, advertising programs I’m so passionate about,” she said.

The short films featuring the darkhaired TV starlet are broadcast on You- Tube, and can also be found on the Web site of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

“I wasn’t getting paid,” Saeidi-Azcuy said, explaining that videos were shot when she was still an intern fresh out of Brooklyn Law School.

The Post reported yesterday that Saeidi-Azcuy resigned from the DA at least in part because higher-ups weren’t told of her moonlighting for The Donald.

But while she was still there, prosecutors were impressed with the 29-year-old’s poise and confidence in front of the camera

“She did an excellent job,” said Jerry Schmetterer, the district attorney’s spokesman.

Saeidi-Azcuy approached the agency brass and volunteered to shoot the spots.

The agency hired her in January as assistant district attorney at $50,000, a post from which she resigned yesterday to instead focus on her role in this season’s “The Apprentice” on NBC.

Her celebrity status began to interfere with her official duties, Saeidi- Azcuy explained, so the agency transferred her from a job prosecuting cases in Brooklyn Criminal Court to an inside job out of the public eye.

“Due to the success of the show, people were recognizing me — defense attorneys, judges,” she explained. “They did the correct thing and transferred me to a lower profile position.”

Saeidi-Azcuy said she cried for “three hours” after making the decision to resign from the prosecutor’s office, but believed her chance to work with Trump offered a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.

The show’s latest season features 16 candidates who are competing to become an assistant with a six-figure salary in the Trump Organization.

The young attorney said she had toned down her feisty conduct after Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, criticized her abrasiveness on the show.

“I think I’m cute and I think I’m tough,” Saeidi-Azcuy said.

Thanks Kacpher! I knew Masha wasn't going home, she's a lawyer and knows how to argue. She's also annoying which is another reason why she wasn't fired. If everyone got along there would be no winner. She could even win, she's good at taking credit and denying blame.

A10, ep. 4

This episode begins with Mahsa stating that Tyana, her bitter rival, does not want her to shine. The prior episode conflicts between David and James were highlighted. Wade had promised Trump to step up as P.M. but when Clint claimed that turf Wade backed down in the interest of team harmony. David was unhappy with Steuart for throwing him “under the bus.”  Tyana as last week’s winning P.M. got to meet with Russell Simmons. The idea he gave her for creating her own business (write down a plan, execute and gather people around you) is a bit simplistic, but more tangibly he gave her a $10,000 gift certificate for use at Calvin Klein.

The entourage of Trump, Donald Jr. and Ivanka arrived with the founder of Indiana Popcorn co., clearly doing a product placement episode (fees are more than $1 million for those according to what I have heard). What he wanted was a guerilla marketing stunt or event that had the potential to blossom into a viral video. The P.M. were Clint and Mahsa. Charlie Todd from Improv Everywhere was the consultant to each team on their creative ideas. His advice was to make it crazy and zany.

Clint adopted the battle cry “go big or go home.” Tyana stood out on the women’s team for her negative comments. Mahsa solved that temporarily by sending Tyana, Lisa and Poppy out on a make-work project. The Fortitude creative concept was working out in a gym while eating popcorn (Indiana of course).

David had come with recent root canal work and he lost half of that tooth while eating a hard New York City bagel. That necessitated his departure to get his tooth fixed. I don’t think anyone on Octane was sorry that he was not there to help out, as he has proven to be a divisive presence with his aggression.

One of the other members of Fortitude mentioned that Mahsa had figured out that in order to be able to pin a loss on someone else they had to have a real share of the creative  and execution aspects of the project. She changed course and set about trying to involve the 3 she had sent away, particularly Tyana. Donald Jr. observed during the final video taping that Mahsa was dominant, which could work against her if Fortitude lost.

Steuart devised a concept involving a popcorn fight individually with 6 small groups, then escalating to one with a large group. Anand was the director of video production. Ivanka observed that and asked “is it hilarious?” to which I answer “absolutely, it was a scream” and clearly worthy of becoming viral.

Trump played each video in the Boardroom. Tyana was not laughing during the Fortitude video but she was during the Octane video. Trump didn’t come right out and say it, but he effectively accused her of disloyalty to her team. Mahsa did accuse Tyana of that. The owner of Popcorn Indiana sort of liked the fortitude creative concept but felt that it did not go far enough. He said that the Octane video made him laugh but had too much violence. Trump asked Clint to comment. Clint responded that the Octane concept and spectacle went BIG. Anand was asked if Clint was an effective P.M. and responded that  he was excellent. Wade was asked why he was not P.M. and he explained. David was asked why he was not there and he explained. Steuart stated that Octane was an excellent team WITHOUT David.

Mahsa was asked if she thought Fortitude had won. She responded “probably.“  Brandy added her agreement, but Tyana disagreed. Mahsa said Tyana did not contribute to either the creative concept or execution and repeatedly interrupted Tyana with “What was your idea?” until Trump told her to quit it.

Clint was asked if Octane had won. He responded yes and Steuart responded that they pulled it off well. Tyana explained that she liked the Octane video better because it funny. I think Steuart added that they shut down part of 5th Avenue at rush hour to film the video.

Donald Jr. and Ivanka gave the post-mortems from the Indiana Popcorn owner. He sort of liked the Fortitude creative concept but found it both clever and contrived and felt that it did not go far enough. Ivanka added that it was not an event but a commercial. He said that the Octane video made him laugh but had too much violence and the tag line was a bit unclear. Trump announced that Octane was the clear winner.

Mahsa explained that she had been attempting to coordinate 50 people during production and post-production of the video and Tyana did not help at all. Lisa chimed in that Mahsa had sent Tyana, Lisa and Poppy away on something make-work while critical creative decisions were being made. Trump began polling all of Fortitude on who should be fired. The entire team said Tyana (before getting to Lisa) preferred Mahsa to stay over Tyana. Mahsa nominated Tyana and Lisa to remain in the Boardroom and the rest were excused. Then even Lisa stated that she preferred Mahsa. Trump fired Tyana.

I would like to make the case for why neither Mahsa nor David is tempermentally suited to be Donald Trump's Apprentice. You can infer that leadership, winning record, good communications skills, creativity, interpersonal skills and teamwork are among the major factors that Trump considers in his decisions on who gets fired each episode and who gets to be the Apprentice each season. Both David and Mahsa are deficient in the last two categories, interpersonal skills and teamwork The closest analog of past Apprentice contestants to both Mahsa and David is Omarosa in my opinion. She served her purpose of creating conflict and ratings and then was jettisoned in the middle of both Apprentice 1 and Celebrity Apprentice 1 (A7). Her controversial personality effectively eliminated her from consideration as the Apprentice. I believe the same is happening to David and Mahsa.

Ye gods, now I'll have nightmares remembering Omarosa, there is a certain similarity with David and Masha. David in particular since he absolutely is not a team player in any sense of the word but is also a disruptor like Omarosa.

I didn't think either team produced a video that had a prayer of going viral but the men's video was at least in the street and attracted a crowd. Fortitude's video was an ad pure and simple, nothing that would be passed around on the web.

A10, ep. 5

Brandy opened this episode by asserting that Mahsa lacks polish and that no one who had the habit of pointing in an accusatory way will ever be successful in business. I agree with Brandy. Clint had his meeting with Steve Forbes and again it appeared to be platitudes. Forbes predicted that Clint will be successful.

Trump stated to the assembled competitors that footwear is a $100 billion business worldwide. He introduced Rockport CEO Michael Rupp. Rupp stated that his new products have the overall theme of walkability and the introduction of the Rockport Spring Collection will be done by Octane and Fortitude that evening. Octane will be responsible for women’s shoes and Fortitude will be responsible for men’s shoes. A group of female models will be available to Octane and male models to Fortitude.  The teams will be assisted by executive recruiters Catherine Rowan and Juan Betancourt taking the normal roles that Ivanka and Donald Jr. have. The P.M. for Octane is Wade and the P.M. for Fortitude is Stephanie.

Stephanie got right to the assignment of responsibilities to her teams. Kelly had Fashion show operations, Poppy and Lisa the creative responsible for clothing purchases and assignment of shoe types to models, Mahsa accounting (burying her where she cannot disrupt anything) and Brandy as the emcee. The theme they agreed on was “A Day in the Life of Tristan”. Stephanie thinks they are on the right track, but she wants to take more risk. The concept of having the male models doing final runway poses in briefs and shoes only was tossed out and Stephanie was very enthusiastic about it.

Wade first assigned Steuart and Anand as the creative guys responsible for supervision of the models and selection of their clothing. David had comedy club experience, so he was asked to do the emcee. Gene stepped up and stated that he too had superior presentation experience, so he wanted to share the emcee tasks. A theme was needed for the Octane presentation, but if they ever found one it was not apparent. Catherine arrived and talked to Wade, coming reaching the impression that the Octane efforts were well-organized. The female models arrived and Steuart and Anand were in their element.

The male models arrived at fortitude, followed by Juan. He talked to Stephanie and concluded that she demonstrated leadership qualities. Clothing for their models was then done by the handlers from each team. Poppy screwed up and only bought one pair of briefs when 8 were needed. Brandy quickly remedied this.

David and Gene prepared their presentations. Gene was clearly in trouble and not ready. He had 9 slides to complete when he should have been done. Gene had the opportunity to let David do it all, but he was stubborn and elected to stay with his task. Kelly put the male models through a practice runway walk and gave some of them specific advice on how to act.

The Rockport 2010 Spring Collection Fashion show began. Fortitude had Brandy as emcee and she did a superb job using a script that focused on the models and shoes without a lot of words. The male models strutted their stuff and the only problem was that one had pitted legs and should have been put in long pants instead of shorts that showed off his legs off to Fortitude’s disadvantage.

Gene was focused on his PC, reading long-winded descriptions to his audience and stumbling throughout. He even mixed up the name of a model and a shoe. I could just see Trump thinking “this was embarrassing” because it totally was. David’s part of the presentation was not shown. It was quite obvious that Octane had performed miserably and was going to lose, but Wade as they were leaving the stage area added “unless the women decided to put the male models naked on stage.” Is this an indication of things to come?

Trump asked why Brandy was chosen as emcee. I believe it was Stephanie who said she was sexy, suave and sophisticated. Trump absolutely agreed, telling Brandy she was fantastic. Someone asked why the model with the bad legs had been put in shorts. Kelly admitted that she had missed that in her focus on having a coherent stage show. Juan asked whose idea it was to take the risk of near nudity. Stephanie said it was her call and she stood by it. Trump said it was an amazing job and that Fortitude had blown away Octane in the judging by Michael Rupp. He stated that it was so overwhelming a victory by the women that he was excusing them right then. Stephanie as winning P.M. was going to have the opportunity to meet with Rupp.

The men were told by trump they were terrible. Gene’s presentation in particular was singled out as an embarrassment. Trump said that Gene burying himself behind his PC was a mistake vs. notes on paper. However, it was also clear that the content of Gene’s presentation had a lot of useless detail. Trump said that David wasn’t great either. Trump stated that he wanted to hear in the presentation that the models were beautiful. He asked why Steuart and Anand were not selected to do the presentation. The answer from Wade was that they had volunteered for the creative role and both David and Gene wanted to do the presentation and claimed the experience to do it successfully. Trump then asked why there was no rehearsal, at which Wade could have seen how bad the presentations were and maybe done some realignment to fix that. Trump stated that the ability to do public speaking and the ability to perform on stage are not the same and Wade should have known that and checked on David’s and Gene’s actual stage presence. Gene tried to defend his speaking ability, but he was obviously missing Trump’s point. At about this point I think it was Mahsa in the lounge area watching the Boardroom on TV who predicted that not one but two Octane members would be fired.

Trump ordered Fortitude to turn off their TV monitor so that the rest of his deliberations would be in private. He asked Juan what he thought. Juan responded    . Trump asked Gene who he should fire. Gene, in an obvious attempt to prevent Wade from going down with the ship with him, stated that he took full responsibility for his own results. Trump fired him, then also fired Wade.

I have to say that this was completely fair and reasonable. Octane had terrible presentations and was totally outclassed by Fortitude. Multiple people were to blame on Octane and the two biggest offenders got the ax as they deserved.

It's still a bit early to predict who will be in the final 4, but I am going to fearlessly go ahead with that.

On Octane, the golden boys are Steuart and Anand. We haven't seen either one in a project manager role, so I expect that will happen soon. Clint has established himself as a decent P.M. David is going nowhere but home.

On Fortitude, we have now seen Stephanie and Brandy perform extremely well and Kelly do moderately well.  Poppy has not had much of a public profile. Lisa has come across as a bit weak and my views on Mahsa had been clearly stated.

I see the final 4 at this time as Clint, Stephanie, Brandy (who will be tested as a P.M. first) and one other from the group of Poppy, Steuart and Anand depending on how well they do as P.M.s.

A10, ep. 6

Stephanie, last episode’s winning P.M., got an offer to take the Rockport Advanced Management Training program from Rockport CEO Michael Rupp. Kelly and Liza were squabbling about who did what to whom. Steuart accused David of essentially being a horse’s ass, so David accuses him of throwing him under the bus.

Fortitude decided that Kelly would be their P.M. and Anand stepped up for Octane. Trump stated that the task was to create pedicab tours and to get licensed to operate them. Ivanka and Eric will be acting as his lieutenants. Both teams go to the licensing center to be tested on their ability to maneuver around oranges and blocks of wood. Everyone was licensed except Kelly and Mahsa, neither of whom will be able to drive a pedicab, limiting them to sales and other support roles.

The first task for both teams is to decide where their base of operations would be the next day. Octane chose Trump Tower, which is part of the Manhattan prime tourist areas, to go with their concept of Roman chariots and charioteers. They were targeting out-of-town tourists and also wanted to do a lot of pre-selling to have a customer base ready to be taken on tours the next day. Fortitude sent “3 blonds and Mahsa” out to scout locations. They came back with Stephanie’s recommendation to
target rich men, which to her meant a Wall Street location. Kelly was reluctant to go there, but decided to accept that recommendation and set up there. The concept for Fortitude was “Babes on Bikes”.

Ivanka came to visit Octane and her discussions with Anand were quite positive about the chance of Octane’s concept succeeding. She did observe that David was in a very low energy mode and wondered if this would be the case the next day when the pedicab tours were operating. Clint found David attempting to disrupt the Octane planning efforts with deliberate off-topic forays, so he warned David to slow down his chatter. Steuart also
chimed in with an attack on David.

With 6 women, Fortitude could use 4 of them to cover the operations of 3 pedicabs while Mahsa and Kelly were doing sales and other support roles. For Octane, 3 of the 4 had to be on the pedicabs. Anand appeared to be switching off with David from time to time. Liza was criticized by her teammates for misleading the public offering “free” tours that were not free. It was not until 1130am that Fortitude’s cabs started to get busy with the lunch hour crowd. Anand stated it was all about “execution and we put on a great tour.”

Eric came to visit Fortitude and asked Kelly who her best salesman was. She said Poppy, which incensed both Stephanie and Mahsa, who had both been doing a lot of off-bike sales. Eric’s personal observations were that Brandy and Poppy were both effective in selling and Kelly was not very effective. He had no comment about Mahsa and Stephanie.

It was now Boardroom time. Trump set the tone with a variety of questions. Early on Clint asked for the chance to say something and he stated that David was the most schizophrenic and disruptive person he had ever encountered in his life. He asked Trump to rid Octane of this plague. When David put his hand up in Clint’s face, Clint challenged him to leave it there a little longer so he could see what would happen to it. David was careful to remove it. Trump’s response was that, if Octane won, he could not given the rules and traditions of The Apprentice fire David.

He asked the inevitable question to Kelly of “Who was your weakest link?” Kelly tried to be diplomatic in his answer: “Liza has the most opportunity for growth.” Some squabbling following but Trump grew weary of it and cut it off with “Let’s find out who won.” Eric stated Fortitude had sold $320. Ivanka said Octane had sold $950. The men had killed the women. Octane was excused and Kelly as P.M. was in big trouble. Who would she try to set up to take her place as the one fired?

Trump told Kelly she was slaughtered by Octane and wanted to know why. Kelly responded that it was the location decision. He stated that the Trump Tower location was an excellent one, but that Wall Street was far from where tourists go and no sane New Yorker would buy a pedicab ride. He summarized that Fortitude had lost the minute it chose Wall Street. Trump continued to interrogate Kelly about Stephanie’s multiple roles. She responded that Stephanie was a pedicab driver, the head of sales, the person who set out the tour route and was critical in the decision on the location. Trump stated that it was a lot of roles for one person and asked what Kelly as P.M. was responsible for. Kelly responded overall coordination but Trump had made his point about too much delegation and putting too many expectations on one person.

Trump asked Mahsa who she would recommend firing. She said Liza. The same question to Poppy got the same answer. Liza defended herself by saying that she contributed indirectly to sales credited to others by the way in which she funneled them toward the pedicab operations area. Trump decided to excuse half the women and asked Kelly to choose the 2 she could bring back into the Boardroom. She chose Stephanie and Liza.

Kelly was asked what happened. She said Stephanie was responsible for sales, tour operations and the location decision.  Stephanie responded that she is from Chicago and Canada, so she knows little about New York City from which to base an informed decision. Trump asked Liza who he should fire. Liza unhesitatingly said Kelly. Ivanka chimed in with the rhetorical (at this time) question “why didn’t you ask real pedicab companies about location?” Trump offered another idea: taking major input from New Yorker Mahsa on the location decision.

Trump was weary. He summarized with “Kelly, you failed the test, you failed the task (note the terrific alliteration), you’re fired.”

A10, ep. 7

The members of Octane and Fortitude are chatting just after Liza and Stephanie returned without Kelly from the previous Boardroom. There was some discussion that Mahsa had revealed to Clint roughly how much the women’s team had made before they went into that Boardroom. To me that information is irrelevant, since you will find out soon enough anyway and cannot do anything with that information.

The competitors were brought to meet Donald Trump, Ivanka and Donald Jr. at the historic Schubert Theater on Broadway. Trump waxed eloquent about Broadway and he stated that the task was to take an aspiring Broadway musical and create a 15 minute presentation with marketing materials for potential Broadway financial backers. This task would be judged by a very special set of judges: John Yanover (producer and financial backer of the hit musical Memphis which performs at the Schubert), Daryl Roth (Broadway producer), Kristin Chenoweth (the actress and Broadway star). The criteria stated by Donald Jr. are the quality of the marketing materials and the quality of the presentation. Trump asked who the PMs are. They are Liza for Fortitude (who has never seen a Broadway play or musical) and Steuart for Octane. The teams would have the help of singer/actors and the concept originator, but no designers, producers or director as those was their roles.

The action shifts to the All Natural Snapple Theater (note the nice product placement although Snapple did pay for some real commercials later). A women named Kirsten has a musical that is about an 11 year old girl who meets a 12 year old boy for the first time and the struggles of young love. It is titled “Little Miss fix-It.” Octane has been assigned it to financially market. Composer and lyricist Ryan Scott Oliver has a musical Darling, a “dark deconstruction version of Peter Pan” set in 1929 Boston. Fortitude has been assigned to financially market it.

Each musical has a cast of about 7 or 8 Broadway quality singers/actors. Those songs give each team ideas on how to best market them. The “brain trust” doing this for the women is Liza, Poppy and Brandy. Liza has deliberately sent Mahsa and Stephanie off to do minor tasks because Mahsa is totally disruptive and disliked and Stephanie took too much credit for everything. Stephanie resented this because she has serious music industry background that could have been useful. The men similarly had initially excluded David by sending him to order and pick up food for the cast and for Clint, Steuart and Anand. When David came back and listened to the current state of the musical, he expressed a number of creative ideas, including his 500 foot helicopter view that the presentation should be by the singers themselves and not by members of Octane except for a brief intro and pitch. Steuart decide to put David in charge of the creative aspects of the presentation. David was to effectively be the new producer of Little Miss Fix-It and Steuart was going to give the presentation intro and pitch. As Steuart put it, if David screwed up then it would be easy to get him fired. During all of this, Donald Jr. arrived at Fortitude and Ivanka at Octane. Ivanka observed that things were in good shape and that David was acting much more responsibly. Liza had some issues with the black-and-white poster that Stephanie and Mahsa had taken for printing. She wanted color in it. They fixed it and the final poster was blessed by Liza. However, she gave the distinct impression she was trying to set Stephanie or Mahsa up for “the fall” if Fortitude lost.

Each team made their 15 minute presentation and the singing in particular in both was impressive. The narration by Steuart had a minor stumble on one word at the end. The judges cast their ballots privately to Trump and we move to the Boardroom.

Trump asked Steuart if David had been more productive. Steuart said absolutely and Clint seconded that when Trump asked him if he took back his observations from the previous episode (Clint didn’t but he did support David’s performance in this task). Trump noted that the judges were unhappy with Steuart’s stumble, so Steuart took time to explain how that happened and how minor it was. Trump now had the promotional materials brought out and presented to the other team for comment. The men’s key piece was a Playbill-style narrative on Little Miss Fix-It which I found very impressive. The women’s were much less informative and somewhat stark. The major deficiency for the women’s material was that it had no follow-up information about who to contact. Trump pounced on this. Liza tried to pass it off on Mahsa and Stephanie not proofing it and noticing the lack of that, but they rightly accused Liza of being in charge of the content. They claimed (rightly, I believe) that they were just following orders and the creative side was down by the “brain trust.” Trump tried to pin down whose fault it was but that didn’t appear to go anywhere.

Stephanie was asked by Trump why she had not volunteered to be P.M. if she had a musical background. She first said she did not know it was a musical. Trump did not buy that, as he knew he had told them it was a musical before the PM decisions were announced. I think what happened here is that Fortitude had made their irrevocable decision in advance because they wanted to put Liza on the firing line and Stephanie elected not to question that. Trump accused her of lying to him, a pretty serious charge in the Apprentice. He let her off the hook because this was a minor issue and not going anywhere. He had bigger fish to fry.

Trump announced the decision of the judges on who won the task. Daryl Roth favored the Octane presentation, Kristen Chenoweth the Fortitude presentation and John Yanover Octane. The men had triumphed and were excused to go watch the boardroom action. Trump told Steuart he would get to meet with the CEO of Snapple, Larry Young.

Trump opened the final Boardroom by stating that Kristen Chenoweth really liked Liza a great deal. Mahsa said something about how others on the team had also made major contributions. Trump zapped her with this accurate observation: “everything is always about you, Mahsa.” Brandy chimed in with the statement that she had all she could take of Mahsa (I think Mahsa’s fate was sealed right then because Brandy is clearly one of his favorites) and that Mahsa was lying. Mahsa said that she is a prosecutor and she points her finger at people naturally as a result. Trump told her that in polite company that is not done and people get highly offended by that behavior. Donald Jr. stated that Mahsa always tries to turn what anyone else says into a negative for that person and a positive for herself. He clearly is tired of it, so Mahsa had two big strikes against her. Trump piled on by twice stating that “Mahsa, you are a breaker.” I think he left the word “ball” out of that so it would pass the NBC censor. Brandy said Mahsa was difficult to work with and then she dropped an atom bomb on the proceedings: Mahsa had shared the amount the women had made before the Boardroom with the Men. To me this was trivial, as it was a “so what?” act. However, to Trump it was evidence of Mahsa’s disloyalty to her team. He clearly wanted to finally get rid of her.  Mahsa knew she was in hot water so she predictably tried to deflect the pressure onto someone else, in this case Clint who she had given the information too. She admitted that she had lied, then stated that Clint had shared Men’s total sales with her. Clint, watching from the suite, was incensed and got Octane to join him in returning to the Boardroom to confront Mahsa, reveal that she was lying again and clear his own good name. Clint stated that Mahsa cannot keep her mouth shut, but he had no idea what the men’s total sales were (only his own), so he could have revealed nothing. He verified that Mahsa had told him the women had made $370.  He also said Brandy was there and could corroborate him. Clint said that he is a straight shooter and the men did not know how much they made until in the Boardroom. Donald Jr. stated that the very presence of the men back in the boardroom, where they had nothing to gain and something to lose, spoke loudly. Trump asked David if he was backing Clint and gave what I thought weak support, but Steuart said that he was with Clint and what he said was accurate. Brandy, trying to put the lid on the coffin, then asked if they thought Mahsa was lying.

Trump then added that Mahsa was also disloyal to her team. He fired Mahsa. The Wicked Witch of the West was dead!

The irony here is that the person most responsible who should have been fired was Liza, whose limited leadership skills were not up to this task. She got off the hook because Mahsa stupidly acted in a way to deflect onto herself all the heat that Liza had earned.

Based on what I had seen to date, I am now willing to offer my predictions on who will be the Final 2. I think pretty boys Steuart and Anand will not make it that far. David might, but his performance would have to be exceptional. Clint has shown good leadership and is so solid that he is my first choice for F2. I think Liza will be gone soon, and Poppy is a nonentity. The 2 strongest women are Stephanie and Brandy. I like Brandy’s chances for F2 even though I like Stephanie’s performance a lot. Brandy has caught Trump’s attention in a number of positive ways and I expect her to be able to ride that wave all the way to F2.

I am delighted that Mahsa is gone! I also loved the fact that Clint went back into the boardroom with the other members of his team backing him. He has a way with words and a manner that is assertive but he stays cool and calm. Good traits for an apprentice. I think Clint will definitely make it to final 2. For the women, Brandy and Stephanie probably are the strongest on the Fortitude team but I like Poppy as well. It  will be interesting to see what happens when the teams get changed.

I agree with you apskip concerning Mahsa. If she had been able to keep her mouth closed Liza would have gone home. Liza was a weak manager and she should have checked the playbill before it was printed, instead she was set up to fail because it was boring and flawed without the contact information.

I want to comment about David. For once he was involved, in his element and did a good job with the musical portion of the challenge. It's too bad he hasn't taken this much interest in the other tasks which is his fatal flaw for the Apprentice position. I think we got a glimpse of what he could be without the attitude and chip on his shoulder.

A10, ep. 8

This episode began with Trump rearranging the teams. He sent Anand and David to Fortitude and Brandy and Liza to Octane. It looked like a fair swap to me. Trump next introduced Terry London, President of Macy’s, as part of the task to develop a 4 page advertorial for the Donald J. Trump Collection of shirts, ties and cufflinks, which is heavily marketed by Macy’s. The task will be judged by London and an unnamed female Trump Organization marketing executive based on the criteria of originality, creativity and final presentation of the advertorial. Trump asked who the PMs for the new teams were. The answer was David for Fortitude and Brandy for Octane. I think David was in big trouble because Brandy is clearly Trump’s favorite among all the competitors and she is more competent than he is.

The teams caucused and decided how to proceed. For Octane the first decision was a risky one by Brandy showing a female in a Trump Collection man’s shirt to emphasize sexuality, money and power as the highlight of their plan. Since a photo shoot was involved and time was limited, the selection of models for the photo shoot became priority #1. Clint and Liza were off on a side task as Brandy and Steuart got to the photo shoot location and discovered no models waiting as expected. Brandy made a command decision and decided that she and Steuart would be the photo shoot models. The photos of them were right on the edge, but did not go over the line of tastefulness in my opinion. Octane proceeded with editing and production of a striking ad.

David took a dictatorial approach. Stephanie allied with him, leaving Anand and Poppy to be the figurative water carriers, role that they felt demeaned by. The first decision was that the models would be shot in black-and-white and the clothing in color. That appeared to be a fine decision. David had his image of what he wanted and once he saw the first male model he “fell in love” with him. Anand later likened it to a homoerotic experience. David used that one model as the centerpiece of the entire 4 pages even though his skinny neck did not properly fit the smallest size shirt available. Stephanie later defended this action by stating that the model was 6’2” and should have had a bigger neck, even though it was obvious that he did not. Trump asked David if he was really gay, but he responded NO. Poppy came up with the concept of a back page with photos arranged in a “T” shape for “Trump.” However, that caused the photos to be quite small.

Eric visited Octane and noted that Brandy was not available to do her oversight of other tasks due to being the primary model. Donald Jr. visited Fortitude and noted that the models had not been fed lunch by 5pm due to supposed lack of follow-through by Anand and Poppy. Anand made the observation that “Mr. Trump is not in the business of rehabbing lost causes. That’s what David is.”

Each team made its presentation to Terry London and the Trump executive. Brandy had 2 minor stumbles but was otherwise good. Her presentation showed creativity but she misnamed the Donald J. Trump Collection as the Trump Collection. David did OK in the Fortitude presentation, but the models did not fit the clothes, particularly the front page model.

In the Boardroom, Trump asked his usual questions before honing in on David. He asked Clint if he was glad David was no longer on his team. Clint tried to be tactful, but he clearly was overjoyed. Trump asked Brandy if she was having an affair with Steuart. She responded no and that she liked older men. Donald Jr. interjected with “Hired,” which I think is likely to happen in a few weeks. David explained his vision of the ad. Anand and Poppy attacked him for leaving them out of the decision process and making bad decisions. Stephanie supported him, but when asked who on the team should be fired she said David should. Poppy additionally stated that she felt demeaned and shut out by David’s lack of sharing of team decisions. Anand had the same experience when he attempted to help David in the editing of the photos. Trump finally had the ads of each team shared with the other team and got the usual drivel from their comments about their opponents’ work. Then he told the teams that Octane had won a decisive victory and Brandy would get to meet with Terry London, then excused Octane.

The Boardroom proceeded to its inevitable conclusion. Given the lack of any real involvement of anyone else from his team in the key decision making, David was a dead duck and he knew it. Trump asked a series of questions, then David elected to have Anand excused. Trump was surprised because he expected it would be Stephanie, but I believe David correctly wanted someone who might support him in that final Boardroom rather than someone who totally opposed him. Trump used a feint to go after Poppy, stating that Terry London hated the back page which was her idea. However, it was David’s responsibility all the way and he did not shirk it. He went down as the captain of his ship.

I'm wondering the same thing. Good thing David is gone because I immediately thought of him. Same thing goes for Mahsa. Not sure why, but I've got a sneaking suspicion it's one of the girls.

I was shocked that it wasn't. I never in a million years would have thought that it would be Anand. And to make it worse, he lied to Trump. I wonder if he could have survived had he admitted the truth. I guess we will never know.

A10, ep. 9

This episode opened with a seemingly benign visit to the Boardroom until Trump stated that there was a cheater in the group who had broken the rules. Anand was pinpointed as the offender. Anand twice denied that he had cheated by breaking rules regarding coercing people to bring money to buy something. Now, I haven’t seen the official rules in question but I do know that the spirit of raising money for charities has involved a lot of requests to bring money to buy something similar. So, how valid was an attack on Anand? I don’t think it was valid. However, Trump was in charge and he differed with my opinion. He wanted a witch hunt and that is what he maneuvered to get. Anand was forced to admit that what he did was wrong and then he was fired. Liza was sent back to Fortitude to balance the teams.

The episode reopens with a challenge to in-store displays at two locations for the introduction of a new line of Kim Kardashian perfumes. It was Clint, Brandy and Steuart against Poppy, Stephanie and Liza. The PMs are Clint and Poppy. Clint thinks it will be difficult to beat the women on this one.  For those who do not remember Celebrity Apprentice history, Kim is the sister of Khloe Kardahian on CA2 who was essentially fired by Trump not for any wrongdoing on her part but for things that had happened about one year prior that did not look good about her veracity. The head of the Perfumania Company perfume company she is working for now, Steven Nussbaum, came to explain to each team what the task involved.

Octane worked well together, defining the necessary work and assigning it within their team to get it done in a timely fashion. Fortitude also worked well together, but they developed inferior concepts such as use of feather boas, rhinestones, and the perfume bottles themselves.

It’s time for the presentation of the fortitude display to Steven Nussbaum and he throws a curve ball by brining Kim Kardashian with him. She will actually be making the decision about which display concept is more “her.” When she goes to the Octane presentation, they took are flustered but let their display speak for itself, which it does eloquently. By the way, as the character Fernando played by Billy Crystal would say, Kim looks fabulous.

The official feedback from Perfumania was delivered to Trump. During the Boardroom, he had his children present it. Donald Jr. revealed the judges’ take on the Fortitude display: cheap and kitschy, the sequins and feather boas were juvenile and conflicted with the sophisticated brand identity because they also were also cheap and kitschy. Ivanka revealed that the judges loved the clean lines of the Octane display. Kim particularly loved the pink and lavender background as it accentuated the bottles and the fragrance. The judges felt that the display was sophisticated and understated, and clearly the winner. So Octane wins and cliff will get to meet with Barry Sternicht of Starwood Hotels.

It looks probable that Poppy will go down with the ship for being the losing PM. She maneuvered to try to avoid that. Poppy explained that she doesn’t like to talk over people. Mr. Trumps response was that she’d better start talking because she’s going to get fired. He goes on to say that she was the Project Manager, did a lousy job, the product was terrible, and that Poppy’s just sitting back and letting Liza and Stephanie fight. Poppy tried to wriggle out of the noose, but there was no particular smoking gun to nail either Stephanie or Liza. Poppy was eliminated.

Good points apskip! In the Celebrity series he fired people for NOT calling friends to bring in more money. I don't know what the rules are for the regular apprentices but it didn't seem like such a big deal. The lie was though. I just hate that he left with this hanging over his reputation or at least what we perceive from the editing.  :(

That's what you get when you put a group of desperate people together. :keeta:

I can't believe Liza's still there. If I were PM, I'd let her actually do stuff that she could be blamed for if it fails instead of let her get props and me doing most of the work and owning up most of the responsibilities. Of course, Stephanie thought she had it at first, but I knew it was her downfall (especially when she didn't consider Liza's ideas). I mean, she's teamed up with Liza only, duh.

Right now I'm rooting for Brandy (well, she took down Mahsa, which I didn't expect from her! and she's a tough worker) & Liza (Liza wasn't my fave but immediately she became the underdog and she's still there!).

That would be my guess as well. Clint has been stellar and he has an air of authority about him. He can be assertive but not annoying. I like him a lot.

About Brandy, I did not like her whining about not being part of the Octane team with Clint and Steuart. I would have more respect for her if she had just jumped in and helped to meld in and become a team player on a equal basis. She could have done it but instead complained to Ivanka. Who would you want to hire would be my question.  :umn:

I haven't seen my tape of the penultimate episode of the Apprentice 10.  I would bet a lot of money that Trump's methods for going from 4 competitors to 2 in one episode will result in neither Steuart (a nice guy but not showing a lot of gumption and leadership) nor Liza (no particular skills that I have noticed except an instinct for survival) reaching the final 2.

It has been predestined that Brandy and Clint as the best leaders will be the Final 2. I should be able to view and write about that episode by this evening, so be watching this thread to see if I have to eat crow.

A10, ep. 10

Steuart met with Cathy Black, at the time CEO of a publishing empire but this week the new New York City Schools Chancellor. She gave him sage but obvious advice to keep his overhead low by staying lean.

Trump wanted for some unknown reason (probably to set up the final 2 that he wanted) to rebalance the teams, Brandy went back to join Liza on Fortitude. He arranged helicopters to fly Clint and Steuart and Brandy and Liza to West Chester PA to the headquarters of QVC Corp. IN the air, Steuart told Clint that he reminded Steuart of his father (Clint is 40; Steuart is 27). The task was to maximize profits on the sale of one of 4 Isaac Mizrahi designer products. Each team had to negotiate with the other to pick a product and the earlier or later time slot. The only difference in the time slots was that the later one gave the team with it maybe 10 minutes more preparation time. The PMs were Liza and Clint. The “eyes and ears” were headhunters Juan Betancourt and Catherine Roman.

Octane wanted a woman’s handbag but negotiated as if they wanted a watch or a belt. Fortitude wanted the belt. Clint offered to give Fortitude the product choice if Octane got the later time slot. His negotiations strategy worked brilliantly, as Liza was focused on that watch, which left anything else including the handbag to Octane. Clint then nominated the handbag and Liza was surprised. Catherine who observed this negotiation gave Clint credit for dominating Liza.

The next issue to settle was the pricing for each team. The cost base was $30.50 for the watch and Liza and Brandy decided to sell it for $69.95, a profit margin of nearly $40 per item sold. The cost base for the handbag was $108. Clint and Steuart seriously discussed selling it for $200 to $250, but Clint decided to go with three E-Z-Pay Installment payments of $64.99 for a total of $194.97. Did each team find a reasonable price point to optimize sales? We’ll find out later.

The choice of on-camera host to chat with the QVC host went to Brandy and Steuart respectively. Liza decided this based on research she cited that 85% of the buyers would be Caucasian. Brandy and Steuart both were more at ease in that environment and both did a really good job. Their PMs became their directors feeding them advice and lines throughout the 5 minute on air time. I think both Brandy and Steuart distinguished themselves at the harder role versus Liza and Clint. Isaac Mizrahi watched the on air piece live from Trump Tower with Donald Trump. One thing that I picked up on but maybe wasn’t a big issue because of the smaller dollars involved was that Liza and Brandy did not pitch the E-Z-Pay Installment Plan at all while Clint and Steuart (with the pressure of a price almost 3 times as high) did pitch it.

Liza’s post-mortem was that it did not go well. Clint’s post mortem was that he loved it and thought it went great. The comments that really counted were by Isaac to Donald. He stated that Brandy was “a natural on camera” although Steuart was also very good. He also suggested that the optimum price point for the handbag was lower than the chosen selling price and for the watch was above the chosen selling price. So what does that mean? It means that the team winning the highest profit wins the task and one person from the losing team will surely be fired.

In the Boardroom, Trump asked Liza how she decided to have Brandy on air. She cited the demographics. Trump admitted that race is an issue no matter what we would like to think. Brandy stated that it would not have mattered who presented on air. Trump asked Clint if he priced high or low. Catherine asked what the Octane negotiations strategy was. Steuart stated with relish “We duped them.” Clint said that their primary focus was on getting the later time slot more than the purse but they ended up with both.  Clint said that he fed Steuart keywords to say throughout the presentation. Liza did the same for Brandy (like the Holly Hunter character in “Broadcast News”).

It was time for the grand reveal. Fortitude sold 77 watches for a profit of $2978 and Octane sold 25 handbags for a profit of $2174.25. Fortitude won, so Liza and Brandy were asked to go wait in the lobby. It is time for a faceoff between Clint and Steuart for who avoids elimination.

Clint got in the opening salvo with “I am a CEO right now out of the box.” Steuart responded that he had been running his own business for years. Steuart stated that Clint is a very good guy (they like each other), but Clint does not have the metropolitan finesse and polish that Steuart does. At this point Juan Betancourt jumped in and agreed that Steuart would be better for the Trump New York City empire. Clint responded that his experience at age 40 is vastly superior to Steuart’s at age 27. Clint responded to a question from Trump about educational credentials by stating that he has a BS from SMU and a MBA from TCU plus credentials as a lawyer, real estate broker, CPA and mediator. Wow, I’m impressed, and that is not easy to do. Catherine stated that Clint has a more complete tool bag and more breadth in his background. Steuart said his BS is from Purdue. Clint cited his entrepreneurial spirit. Trump chose this moment to change gears and say “Steuart, you’re fired.”

He then asked the ladies to come back to the Boardroom where he predicted that one individual of the 3 remaining will be fired immediately. The episode ends with a To Be Continued, but anyone with savvy can predict where this is going. There is no basis for elevating Liza to the final 2 while both Clint and Brandy have earned it. Liza will be the one fired in spite of having just been the winning Project Manager.

So, I will proceed with the assumption that Liza is the one fired at the beginning of tonight's episode. Who do I like for he next Apprentice? Trump could not lose with either of them, as they are exceptionally well qualified to be an Apprentice. I like Brandy. She is a bit smoother than Clint but still gets done most of what he can do. Her superior presentation skills will win the day.

I applaud Donald Trump for a major change in his approach to going from 4 to 2 final Apprentice candidates. In all prior seasons that I can recall, he has used some version of an interviewing process to provide additional input beyond that available in the episodes. I viewed this as pure window dressing, since Trump made the decisions himself and could selectively use whatever of that input fit his preconceived notions of who should move forward. The most egregious example of this was when Brande Roderick was fired instead of Joan Rivers.

In Apprentice 10, Trump had a normal episode with one member of the losing team fired, but he could choose either one that he wished. It was not the Project Manager Clint; it was Steuart actually fired. There was conflicting advice from two headhunters who served as his "eyes and ears." The final elimination to reach the Final 2 was of Liza, who certainly was less qualified than either Clint or Brandy to move ahead.

I also liked the way he managed the final choice. Brandy and Clint both deserve to be the final two for Trump's apprentice job. I believe that Steuart and Liza would be excellent employees and really this season's candidates all have potential. (Even David if he finds something he loves doing.)

We were teased with Clint drawing criticism for saying "Y'all" but I suspect this is a diversion. It appears that the biggest mistake on Clint's part was misspelling Liza Minnelli's name on the poster and place cards. Will he be able to fix this with such a limited budget.

Brandy didn't seem to have had the potentially catastrophic situations that Clint experienced, surely there will be one or two for her as well. Losing Liza's help so she could play golf with Trump doesn't seem like a big deal to me, normally in any task she would be sent away to get rid of her so why would this be any different?

Can't wait till next week!

TexasLady,

I disagree with your position on the relative unimportance of Brandy losing Liza's help for a significant period of time. During that time, Brandy has lost 25% of her team resources. my impression is that the team is stretched pretty thin, with lots of checking on details to challenge them. That time is significant and will limit Team Brandy.

Apprentice Finale, part 2

Apprentice 10 is over, with the finale telecast last night. There were problems to test the resolve and crisis management skills of Brandy and Clint. How did they do in solving them?

The golfers arrived and Stephanie and Brandy greeted them. The 12pm start was shot-gun (meaning each team started on a different hole, not in a line at #1 or #10 holes) so all teams would finish at approximately the same time. Trump arrived at 1135am and Brandy did not get the opportunity (I believe deliberately) to greet him. Kathy Griffin arrived and Team Brandy expected to have her do 5 minutes of comedy at the start, but the golfers dispersed before that could happen. Kathy was driven around the course by Stephanie with the photographer in tow and interacted with each team. This was an outstanding experience for the golfers.

Clint's major problem was the spelling of "Liza Minnelli" on posters name cards. He was certain he had proofed it correctly, so the mistake was the printers. He negotiated to have the $1000 credit cover all the reprinting necessary and impressed his team by the aplomb with which he handled that negotiation.

Trump was in a 3-some with a New York Jet former player and Liza and he was upset because he was at a disadvantage to the 4-somes and 5-somes they were competing against, apparently using low score on each hole as the criteria for the team scorecard. Brandy was able to make an adjustment and by the third hole turn that 3-some into a 5-some. Trump did not acknowledge his appreciation, but I am sure he noted it. He is an excellent golfer and you know his competitive nature. He would want to win his own tournament or at least place high (note - he actually won it).

Clint greeted Liza Minnelli on her arrival and oversaw the sound check and all special arrangements to assure her satisfaction. He had delegated the feeding of 500+ guests to Steuart (due to his catering experience) and decorations to Poppy and Steuart and Poppy came through for him big time. Ivanka later noted that they had been fed in 40 minutes, a very outstanding achievement for 500+ people. Clint introduced Donald Trump and Trump introduced Kathy Griffin, who at 5pm had been transferred into his domain. Prizes were awarded. This was the key area of problems for Brandy because Lixa and Anand had not followed her instructions on how to do them and had not gotten gift certificates but had gotten merchandise that would duplicate what high-end golfers could be expected to already own.  In fact, Trump later stated that every first place winner had left his not-known-brand merchandise behind. This was the only negative for Team Brandy that I could see.

Kathy introduced Liza. Liza did her singing, which I am not a big fan of but Donald Trump clearly was. The evening ended and Trump proclaimed both the golf tournament and the dinner/entertainment a major success. So how would he decide who the Apprentice would be? The teams returned to the Boardroom for this.

Trump acknowledged that both Brandy and Clint have done an outstanding job. He was impressed by the golf tournament running without a hitch, the outstanding food service and the room decorations. He started by asking Brandy why she picked the team and not the task. She said she wanted Liza and Stephanie on her team but definitely not Mahsa. Clint was asked why he picked what may have been the harder task of the dinner/entertainment over the golf tournament. He answered because he had communications skills that would be better utilized in that task. Trump acknowledged that Mahsa and Anand, both of whom had left under a cloud, had overcome that and proven their worth. Ivanka stated that the prize winners had really valued their Trump National Apprentice Tournament trophies much more than their other gifts. Donald Jr. said that Clint overused the you-all corn pone Texas lingo. Clint responded that is the way he speaks every day of his life.

Trump is a really smart guy, so his method was to question and poll the helpers on Team Brandy and Team Clint. He asked Stephanie, Liza, Anand, Steuart, Poppy and Mahsa who, with no team loyalty constraint, they would hire as the Apprentice. Here is what they said:
Poppy - impressed by Clint's grasp of what he wanted, but she would choose Brandy
Anand - Brandy
Stephanie - disenchanted with Clint's invading the golf tournament and introducing himself to the players when that was not appropriate conduct; Brandy was polished, consummate, and the business professional
Steuart - Clint was adaptable and exceptional
Mahsa - Clint
Liza - Brandy
Trump excused the helpers to wait for the winner.

Trump addressed Brandy and Clint by telling them they were both outstanding. He asked both to state why they should be the Apprentice. Clint listed his degrees and multiple areas of functional expertise plus being valedictorian of his high school class. Brandy was more humble, although she did counter that she too was valedictorian of her high school class. Trump's final question to both was "in what capacity would you like to work for the Trump Organization." Clint's answer was to run a real estate development underway construction in Scotland. Brandy's answer showed a deeper level of thought. She said that she wanted to work with the younger generation of the Trump family, Ivanka, Donald Jr. and/or Eric. That impressed me and I am sure it also impressed Donald Trump. Trump made his decision and fired Clint, hiring Brandy as the next Apprentice.

I thought it was the right decision. Clint's lack of the polish that Brandy exuded was a key factor. Also, Clint was a bit “field marshal" in mentality while Brandy was more reserved and humble in her approach to getting things done. I suspect the biggest single factor was the esteem in which Brandy's teammates and former competitors held her, in my view a by-product of her superior interpersonal skills. She also had superior presentation skills. My wife when asked said that Brandy won because she was beautiful and intelligent. Those are two fine attributes for impressing Donald Trump. However, I can remember two seasons when Trump did not hire the female finalist with similar attributes. He chose Kelly over Jennifer in season 2 and Randal over Rebecca in season 4. I felt both of those were big mistakes. Selecting Brandy as the Apprentice 10 is no mistake.

I would put Apprentice 10 up with the Celebrity Apprentice seasons as the best of the Apprentice. I was very satisfied that I was watching something worth watching.

I enjoyed this season but I did not like the ending. I'm an unhappy camper today.

There wasn't a live audience, a departure from previous seasons) and I thought it was unfair to Clint to dismiss him with a 'Your fired!" then show the celebration with the other fired applicants while Clint was shown walking off dejected and rejected. It was jarring to say the least because Clint was outstanding in his tasks. Yes, he might not be as polished as Brand but he was very effective, calm when disasters happened and handled them like a pro. He deserved better treatment.

I believe the choice was revealed when Donald Jr commented during the dinner preparations that he wondered if Clint could have pulled off the task without the help of Steuart. (I thought it was a cheap shot to be honest, if Steuart was the better candidate, why wasn't he in the final two.)

Apskip about Brandy and her reason for being Trump's Apprentice, for me, it was self serving. She appealed to The Donald's ego, extolling the virtues of working with the  younger Trump offspring. (Didn't harm her chances with Donald Jr and Ivanka either.)

All my gripes aside, she probably will be very successful in the Trump organization. Clint will have many offers and no doubt will be hugely successful even if he's not the new apprentice for Trump.

TexasLady,

We don't often disagree, but this is one of those times. I thought Brandy was a much better fit for the Trump Organization as well as having the superior presentation and interpersonal skills with a lot of polish that Clint lacked. he could do the job but would not have been as fun to be around. I think that's important to Trump.

I don't disagree with you about Brandy. What I didn't like was the treatment he gave Clint. For me it was upsetting. No one said goodbye, he was shown walking away with the wind out of his sails and not even part of the celebration afterwards. It was a poor ending. No followup, no final interview, nothing. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. Never mind this is the first time we haven't had a 2 hour finale with the live audience. I feel that Clint deserved better than this.
