♥♥♥ TAR 14: LaKisha & Jennifer Hoffman - Sisters
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:56:36 AM »
Biography
LaKisha Hoffman (28); Jennifer Hoffman (24)
Hometown: Bronx, N.Y. / Louisville, Ky.
Occupation: LaKisha (Program Coordinator); Jennifer (Marketing Assistant)
Relationship: Sisters

These two former Division 1 College athletes look forward to becoming the first ever all female Team to win the Race. Besides athleticism, these sisters have little in common.

LaKisha works as a youth program coordinator and basketball coach. She hopes the same strengths that make her a good coach – patience and a strong competitive nature - will ultimately make her the best Racer the game has seen. Meanwhile, she claims her sister is very impatient and blunt when it comes to dealing with others or speaking her mind.

Jennifer works as a marketing assistant and newsletter coordinator for an assisted living company. She claims that she is the creative one while LaKisha is the analytical one…two traits that will undoubtedly be tested on the Race. Jennifer is infectiously energetic and confident, played college volleyball at the University of Louisville. LaKisha played basketball for the same school. Both have a competitive drive and are eager to put it to the test against this season’s crop of Racers.

Neither sister has traveled extensively outside of the states, but they are looking forward to embarking on this journey of a lifetime together in order to change that. They will run the Race with unstoppable speed and numerous arguments along the way.

These girls are the ones. If an all female team wins TAR 14 it will be these two, IF they can keep their sibling rivalries in check. With some teams, this is a big if. With these two, I’m hoping that they can keep it together long enough to prove me right.

PREDICTION: 1st

They could just as I said do well or bad. We have sisters, brothers and brother/sister. And for the first time ever both a Mother and Father based team in the same race. Wow this is truly a family season!

The cast this season is so diversify and there's only 2 co-ed dating teams, which is a relief for me.

I get a mid-race elimination vibe from them, which sucks, as I like to root for the American-American teams.  (I'm African-American, you see.)

Sisters look to be an 'Amazing' pair
BY Cristina Kinon
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Friday, February 13th 2009, 3:34 AM

New Yorker Lakisha Hoffman and her sister Jennifer signed up for the 14th season of CBS' "The Amazing Race" in hopes of becoming the first all-female team to win the grand prize.

"We knew that from all the seasons before, a female-female team had never won, and we felt like we had what it took to be the first," Lakisha, 28, of the Bronx, told the Daily News.

"We didn't put too much pressure on ourselves because we still wanted to have fun, but it definitely was in the back of our minds."

"The Amazing Race," premiering Sunday at 8, features 11 teams of two who travel the globe and compete in grueling challenges, ultimately covering 40,000 miles of nine countries in just 22 days.

This season's contestants feature a pair of stunt men, a pair of flight attendants, former NFL cheerleaders, the competition's first deaf contestant and a Hollywood screenwriter/producer.

Lakisha, a former college basketball player who's now program coordinator for New Heights NYC (a nonprofit education group), says it was Jennifer's idea to sign up for the show. Despite being initially reluctant - she has a fear of heights, weird animals and pretty much everything that happens on "The Amazing Race" - Lakisha eventually caved and began training.

"I usually fill my day working with kids, watching 'Law & Order' and playing basketball, so I'm not in top physical shape," she said. "I started doing some running and strength conditioning, but other than that, we didn't really have any big strategic plans. We're both laid-back, go-with-the-flow type people, so we decided to take things as they come."

Lakisha and Jennifer, 24, grew up in a single-mother household, so they've always leaned on each other for support. But as they've gotten older, said Lakisha, they've started to bump heads.

"We joke it's like having two quarterbacks on the field," she said. "But during the 'Race,' we learned to use each other's strengths and how to complement one another when the other is weaker. We make a great team, and this experience confirmed for us that we still have so much growing and learning to do."

The first episode of the season kicks off with all the contestants visiting both Romania and Siberia, a first in "Race" history.

"Siberia was cold, and I don't care for the cold at all," said Lakisha. "In Romania, the people live such a different life than what I'm used to seeing. It really gives you a greater appreciation for what you have."

They weren't seen much on this first leg, but there's a better look at their personalities on the Insider clips. Mel & Mike apparently already nicknamed Kisha "Giggles" because of the sound of her laugh (which sounds really, really weird) and Jen "Sleepy" because she has a sleepy-looking expression on her face almost constantly. Kisha was fine with her nickname since she'd always been called "Dr. Giggles" in her college sorority.

Of course, in another clip, they have a fight over material things like Kisha constantly forgetting to zip up her backpack and finding maps. But they do so with surprising calm and maturity and without resorting to yelling at one another.

For that, I found myself liking them even more.

It would be nice if TAR took a page from TARA2's book. Namely putting two NEL's back-to-back in the middle, to get to know the  better.

I've got a vague feeling that part of the problem with Kisha & Jen's dynamic may be that they're less comfortable with airing their emotions in front of a camera than some. Not wanting to get into all that screaming, crying, and hugging on national TV, so they're not really engaging with their issues and they're sticking with obtusely unresponsive and passive-aggressive respectively. Do you think?

Mel & Mike's F6 elimination guarantees that Kisha & Jen will officially tie the record for the highest-placing team of sisters.  At least in a two-person-team season.  They tie with Kami & Karli from TAR5, who had their own fifth-place finish.  They make it through the Bangkok leg, though, and they'll have officially broken that record.

I hope these two continue to surprise us! It has been interesting watching them defy the odds (spoiler-wise).

And it would help in the prediction game, too.

From one my favorite sites, AfterEllen:

Quote
Out Lesbian LaKisha Still in the Running on "The Amazing Race"
by Sarah Warn, Editor in Chief
April 15, 2009

AfterEllen.com recently learned that the 28-year-old contestant LaKisha "Kisha" Hoffman on Season 14 of CBS's The Amazing Race is openly gay.

This information was revealed by Rev. Mel White, an openly gay minister who was racing with his son until he was eliminated last week, in an interview with our brother site AfterElton.com that will be posted there on Friday. Since we don't "out" people, and there have been no public statements from Kisha about her sexuality, we contacted CBS before publishing this story. They confirmed that Kisha is indeed openly gay.

Although there have been close to a dozen gay or bisexual men — three in this season alone (Mel, his son Mike, and Luke) — participating in the popular CBS reality series, there have only been a few openly gay or bisexual women: lesbian ministers Kate and Pat, racing as a couple on Season 12; 27-year-old lesbian Lauren Marcoccio, racing with her father in Season 10; and bisexual contestant Tian Kitchen, racing with her best friend in Season 4.

Kisha is the first openly gay woman of color to race on the series. Her sexuality has not been mentioned on the show or in any Amazing Race press materials.

A youth program coordinator and basketball coach from the Bronx in New York, Kisha is racing with her sister Jennifer, 24, who are referred to on the show as "Kisha & Jen."

Here's the team's official bio on CBS.com:

Quote

Although they started the race unimpressively, Kisha and Jen have proved to be a formidable team, coming in third in one leg, and then second in another. The two sisters have worked fairly well together so far (by Amazing Race standards). While both women are fairly low-key racers, Jen's demeanor tends to be more negative, and Kisha's more optimistic (her nickname in her college sorority was "Dr. Giggles").

But in last week's episode, the sisters made a costly mistake when they left their travel documents behind during a task, and were forced to go back and retrieve them before being checked in, which meant they not only gave up their third-place lead, they narrowly avoided elimination.

The season started with 11 teams, which has now been whittled down to 5. Tune in Sunday at 8pm EST/PST on CBS to see how Kisha and Jen fare in the next leg of the race, or catch up on the episodes aired so far online.

The Amazing Race Exit Interview: Jen and Kisha’s Expensive Potty Break

Sisters Kisha and Jen were The Amazing Race’s most athletic team. The NCAA Division I stars could outrun everyone else. They seemed invincible. But, like the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, water was their Achilles heel. First they left their fannypack behind in a Thailand boating challenge. Then Jen battled her water phobia during a swimming challenge. The water finally won during last night’s leg. Jen drank too much of it during an eating challenge and made an ill-timed potty break that led to their elimination. The sisters opened up to Fancast about their unusual elimination, their bitter rivalry with Luke and Margie, and why they’re the only reality show contestants who actually like the way they were edited.

How far behind Cara and Jamie were you at the Pit Stop?

Jen: We really have no clue.

Kisha: We’re pretty sure it was a couple minutes

You two had one of the most memorable exits in Race history. Jen, how do you feel about being known as the person who got eliminated because she stopped to pee on the way to the Pit Stop?

Jen: That’s fine. People have their opinions but it’s all hindsight right now. People can only say what they might have done in that situation but they’re never in that situation so I just laugh it off. People are funny. It was a funny episode, I really must admit.

Were you mad at Tammy and Victor for U-turning you?

Kisha: No. We weren’t upset with them for using it. We were disappointed because we definitely didn’t want to be U-turned especially when we knew what the other task was. We know it’s a game. It’s strategy. Several of the racers were intimidated by our footspeed so we felt like if they had the opportunity they would U turn us.

How long did it take you to do the Chinese restaurant challenge?

Jen: We were very surprised. It didn’t take us long. Maybe fifteen minutes. We had to repeat it four or five times. It was so funny. We really want to know what we were saying in translation because what they said in the episode I’m sure wasn’t true. It was for entertainment and it was extremely funny.

Kisha: We were nervous when we started. We quickly came up with a strategy. What we did was write down what they said to us and in English and repeat it so that when we went up there to say it we had some clue. It worked for us.

Jen: It was like Chinese phonics.

How far behind everyone else were you in the swimming challenge?

Jen: I wouldn’t think it was more than two hours. You really don’t have a concept of time in that situation. When my sister was pushing me we just wanted to finish strong, like she said.

Were you really ready to quit the race because you feared swimming?

Jen: When they showed that aspect of it, it was the culmination of a lot of events. It was a very stressful situation, you’re giving it all you can. You’ve got to push through the pain. But at times it could be so overwhelming. At that very second it was over for me because we were in last place but we didn’t know what was in front of us so I was looking looking more at the negative side of, “We’re done, we’re last.” I felt really regretful that we came this far and that would be the end of it. There were a lot of different ideas going on in this little head of mine. I’m glad I had my sister. That’s all I can say.

Do you think that the stress of the swimming challenge impacted your performance on the rest of the leg?

Kisha: I don’t think so. I felt that she pushed through it even though she was afraid. When we found out the race was still going we were excited and shocked. I think that it din’t deflate us. It actually energized us.

The show focused a lot on your rivalry with Margie and Luke. What really went on there? How did you feel when Margie complained to Phil about the two of you?

Kisha: I think that it’s a competition. People get caught up in the moment. Once it’s over, like my sister said on the show, it’s water uner the bridge. We’re moving on. We didn’t hold a grudge. Just from seeing the show, I don’t think that’s the same thing they did. When we were at the Pit Stop I was shocked. We had just ran and I was totally exhausted. We just wanted it to be over with. So when they got really upset we didn’t know how to handle that. I just stood there. All along through the Race people called me “giggles” just because I laugh. I think Margie was aware of that. So when she made the comment about laughing at her son, I didn’t think that was the right assessment of the situation.

Have you mended fences with them?

Kisha: We don’t really communicate with them. I have nothing to say on that subject.

Who were you rooting for in the final three?

Kisha: Tammy and Victor just because we thought they ran a race similar to ours. They worried about themselves. There may have been times when they shared information with other people but overall they were very focused on their team and I think they ran a pretty classy race. Even though we were disappointed in them U-turning us we understood that was strategy.

Which moments of your race do you wish America had gotten to see?

Jen: I think they did a great job of depicting who my sister and I are. The Race is set up so that you build these stories around these people. As the Race progressed you got to see a lot more of who my sister and I are. We’re goofy. I tell her to shut up when she sneezes. She knows that sometimes I can be a hot head. Our friends and family would call us and day, “I knew you guys would do that. I knew you would react that way.” I think CBS did a great job. There’s only so much you can see in an hour.

What advice would you give to future competitors on the Race?

Jen: Have fun. My sister and I had fun. We knew we were going to get on each other’s nerves the first few days. But it’s about how we adjusted, how we communicated with each other. I learned a lot about her. She learned a lot about me. We can communicate more effectiveley now than before the Race. I definitely wouldn’t use it for couples’ therapy, but if you’re going in with a family member, you have to take everything with a grain of salt.

Kynt and Vyxsin are fancast’s celebrity Amazing Race bloggers. They have this question for you: Girls! It was great to see Louisville BACK on the Amazing Race, thanks to you guys! We pegged you all early on as the MOST athletic team in the current cast and you definitely lived up to that expectation! We have this question for each of you…….tell us about each of your athletic backgrounds. And what do you consider your greatest athletic achievement in the 502?

Jen: I played volleyball at U of L. I probably achieved the top accolades of any volleyball player here, but I wasn’t a great player. I had the help and the teachings of great people at the University of Louisville to shape me as a player and, in turn, shape me as a person. I played overseas professionally, I played with the national team. I came into every situation with an open heart, wanting to learn. I’m currently a coach here at the University of Louisville so I’m giving other people the chance who weren’t as good athletes as I turned out to be. I wasn’t always the best athlete when I was in high school. My best attribute as a player is that I was a student before I was a teacher.

Kisha: I played sports in high school. Then I played basketball. My experience at Louisville was great. It was just a different dynamic. I felt like the coaches that were involved in my life really pushed me on both the athletic side and the academic side. I’m a Youth Program coordinator. I work with student athletes so I instill the same values in the kids that I work with.

Me too Ken! So I'm watching Bonnie Hunt and it sounds like she'll have the final 3 on her show next week but noted that the sisters didn't want to be on because they are not happy? Maybe thats a question for the Tarcon people to ask them.. thats if they are at Tarcon?

A bathroom break costs Racers LaKisha and Jen their shot at $1 million

LaKisha and Jennifer Hoffman were stuck in the back of the back, when the second part of the China leg of The Amazing Race kicked off. "It was so stressful," Jen tells In Touch. The sisters managed to make up a ton of time - even after being U-Turned and forced to complete both Detours - and were well on their way to securing a spot in the final three. But when Jen stopped to use a port-a-potty just yards from the pit stop, another team snuck past them. "I don't regret anything," admits Jen. "On the race, things happen and you can go from first to last and vice versa," adds LaKisha, who doesn't hold a grudge against her little sister for taking a million-dollar pee break!

What went through your mind at the pit stop when Phil handed you a clue and said that the leg wasn't over yet?
Jen: I promise you that sucked everything out of me. That first part of the leg was so stressful and I was thinking that it was the end for us. But when Phil said that we had to keep going, I was in total shock. It was a great feeling, though.

Would you say that China the hardest leg of the race?
Jen: Emotionally, yes, because of my fear of water. That made it the most difficult for me to push through. It's hard to conquer a fear.

How did you manage to make up so much time during the second half of the leg?
LaKisha: After we left the opera house, everyone got lost except for Tammy and Victor. Figuring out that clue took a long time. Once we realized that it was right next door to the place where we were, we just focused on trying to complete each task and make it to the pit stop.

Were you shocked that Tammy and Victor U-Turned you?
LaKisha: No we weren't shocked at all. There had been a lot of talk from other teams saying that if it came down to a footrace to the pit stop then my sister and I would win. So the teams were worried.
Jen: Yeah, we weren't surprised at all when we saw our pictures on the U-Turn.
LaKisha: Disappointed but not surprised.

Jen, do you regret stopping to use the bathroom before checking in at the pit stop?
Jen: It's all in hindsight, and I don't regret anything I've done on the race.

LaKisha, are you proud of your sister?
LaKisha: Yes, I'm definitely proud of her. I've said she's not my little sister anymore; she's an equal team member. Everyone thinks I should be hard on her for wanting to stop to pee, but I'm not because we wouldn't have made it that far in the race without her. I'm proud of her for really conquering her fears of water on the last leg. She was able to swim and finish the race, and I'm really proud of her because of that.

Exclusive: Jennifer and LaKisha Hoffman talk 'The Amazing Race'

By Reality TV World staff, 05/05/2009

The "Sisters" team of Jennifer and LaKisha Hoffman seemed to be on their way to securing the third and final slot in The Amazing Race 14's final leg.

However after downing several bottles of water so that she could complete the penultimate leg's gross food Roadblock task, nature ended up calling at the worst possible time for Jennifer, and she and her sister were eliminated from the race after they after made a brief stop for her to use a bathroom on their way to the leg's Pit Stop mat.

On Monday, the sisters spoke to Reality TV World about why Jennifer wasn't willing to pee her pants for $1,000,000, why LaKisha's openly gay sexual orientation was never mentioned on the show, how long the extra U-Turn task they had to do really took them, and what they thought about their unusual Pit stop confrontation with fellow racers Margie Adams and her son Luke Adams.

Reality TV World: Let's start at the beginning of last night's episode.  did you guys walk up to that Pit Stop knowing you were already in last place or did you think maybe Tammy and Victor had gotten lost or [something else]?

LaKisha: Oh yeah, we knew we were last.

Reality TV World: So did you arrive there thinking there was any chance it might be a superleg or were you 100% certain at the point that you were going home?

Jennifer: We just wanted to finish strong and that's the thing about the race -- you can never predict what's going to happen because it always amazes you, that's why it's called The Amazing Race.

But when we were the last team to leave the Detour in China we just wanted to finish, we just wanted to make sure that we didn't quit.  So at that point that's what was on my mind: let's finish strong.  She motivated so much to where -- I was defeated from all the stress.

I was mentally just broken down, so having my sister there, not wanting to disappoint her and her having that confidence in me.  Just, that whole situation became bigger than the race at that point for me.  And that's why I said had I not had my sister, anybody else would have let me quit.

So at that point it became much bigger than the race, it was about finishing strong and about how at that point you see my sister and I's relationship, you know, grow.  And that's the type of people that we are -- that everything that they built our story and so forth and so on, that's what you see, that's how we are.

That's what I'm most appreciative of having her experience this with me to the end when we got eliminated until now.  She's still... she's one of my best friends.

Reality TV World: Jennifer, can you just talk a little bit about what happened with that swimming task.  Was it a water phobia?

Jennifer: No (both sisters laugh)

It's not necessarily a fear of water well, I mean, yeah, it is. (LaKisha laughs)

I don't like -- I don't put maybe in situations where I'm required to swim or when I'm around a pool or anything.  I always have the attitude 'Well I'm 6' 1" so I can stand in the shallow end and not even hit my belly button' you know, so if I can stand in the water, why swim in it, who cares.

It wasn't a fact of me never wanting to learn how to swim, it just wasn't on my agenda and you know, I just don't put myself in those situations because I automatically think 'death' with water and 'drowning' because I'm an anchor.  When you put me in the water I don't float.

Reality TV World: So going forward to the middle part of last night's episode, how much time did you guys lose when you were wandering around looking for that U-Turn cluebox after the opera house [task]?

LaKisha: We're not sure but it felt like we were walking around for hours.  We were okay at first, we felt that Tammy and Victor, you know, they had the advantage of the language so they had that to go on [but] we actually saw Margie and Luke and Cara and Jaime walking around as well so even though we were a little frustrated that we couldn't find this place we knew that two other teams were with us.

And then we didn't see Margie and Luke anymore so we figured okay, they found the location and it was down to these last two teams trying to find out where this next clue was.

Reality TV World: Were you expecting to be U-Turned?  Because [the show showed] Tammy and Victor making some statement about how they expected you to have U-Turned them if you'd had the chance?

LaKisha: Yeah, I'm not sure why they expected us to U-Turn them, only in the sense that anybody in the situation when it's down to the final four teams and whatever you can do to get an advantage on someone else that's what you do.

We knew that if it came down to a footrace that they were a little, you know, intimated by that.  It was disappointing that they U-Turned us but...

Reality TV World: They also said that you guys would have definitely U-Turned someone else if you'd had the opportunity.  Was that the case, had you discussed that and who would you have done?

Jennifer: Um, it's all about strategy.  Like when we were in the race and we'd seen Margie and Luke and Cara and Jaime we'd figured that we could assume Tammy and Victor were before us.

So, thinking at a strategic point -- because my sister and I, we don't hold grudges, we always think about what's at stake -- so [in that] instance, we'd been roaming around [for a while].  So if an hour or a half hour had passed and we didn't see Margie and Luke well then we assumed they were up ahead of us so the only team behind us was Cara and Jaime.

You see what I'm saying?  It's not like 'Oh, if we get there first these are the people that we're going to U-Turn to be malicious.'  No, it was all part of a strategic standpoint and that's why we understand why Victor and Tammy did it.

Reality TV World: So if you had been in third place [you'd have used it] but maybe not [if you were in] first place?

Jennifer: Right, right.

Reality TV World: How long did it take you to go back and do that Chinese Waiter task?  That seemed pretty difficult.

LaKisha: It actually only took us around 15 minutes or so to do it.  We are still surprised until this very moment because we were like 'Oh wow, they U-Turned us [and] this other task we need to speech Chinese!' (laughs)

And so I think initially we were a little nervous but once we came up with a strategy to get past it then that's what we did.  So surprisingly it only took us 15 minutes or so.

Reality TV World: Wow, that was probably quicker than the opera task

(both laugh)

Jennifer: Yes, at some point that make-up began to singe off my skin and it burned me a little bit on the cheek so... but that was a good task, that was fun

Reality TV World: Did you guys really finish just "seconds" behind Cara and Jaime at the Olympic stadium?   I know that's what [The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan] said, but they didn't seem to still be there on the mat [or nearby].

LaKisha: We're guessing [it was] minutes but you really never know, there's really no concept of time during the race until someone is running right next to you.

Jennifer: Yeah, let's just say I did not piss away a million dollars, please.  Let's just say that.

Reality TV World: Actually, that's kind of my next question and I'm not really sure the best way to bring this up, but there actually has been a lot of discussion this morning about what people would be willing to do for a million dollars...

Jennifer: Exactly...

Reality TV World: ...and you know, peeing their pants seems to be something most folks have thought they'd be willing to do.  Did you realize how close things were [with Cara and Jaime] at that point or did you not realize how tight it was?

Jennifer: No, I just wasn't going to pee on myself (laughs)

Reality TV World: A perfectly legitimate answer... (laughs)

Jennifer: I've been getting calls 'Oh, I would have peed on myself' [and I've been saying] well, you're never put in that situation, ever, in life, so you can always say that it's something that you would do but when you're in that situation we'll see how you'd react.

So I've been like yeah, it was a funny episode [and] you know, it happens.  Stuff happens so we've definitely moved on and I don't regret anything that I did in the race and I think my sister and I ran a great race.

Reality TV World: And this is obviously a hypothetical, but do you think you would have made the same decision if that had been the race's final finish line instead of the penultimate Pit Stop?

Jennifer: Um, from the previews where they are around water I probably would have pissed in the water (both laugh)

Reality TV World: The gross food [Roadblock] task, Cara really seemed to fly through it.  Was that something that surprised you?

LaKisha: I would say yes.  I think both of us joked that she must have had zero gag reflex just because when we left the Roadblock they were just starting.  So she must have like pretty much swallowed it whole.  (Jennifer laughs)

I think the other thing was that their cab driver dropped them off pretty close [to the stadium] where you could see from the show that our cab driver dropped us off [farther away].  And all those factors concerned left us, you know, in fourth place.

Reality TV World: But you didn't actually get lost on the way there or anything like that, it was basically the bathroom break that was the [final] difference maker?

Jennifer: No...

LaKisha: Well, our cab driver didn't drive very fast

Jennifer: Yeah...

LaKisha: ...theirs, it looked like he was going a hundred miles an hour.  And you know you count the distance that he dropped them off to the distance to the distance our cab driver dropped us off and you know...

Jennifer: Lots of factors

LaKisha: You know there were several factors, it wasn't just one single instance that really put us in that position.

Reality TV World: Going back, you had actually alluded to Tammy and Victor's [Manderin language knowledge] a little while ago.  Obviously the course was pre-planned, but you guys ended up spending I believe it was not one or two or but [essentially] three legs in China.  How big an advantage do you think that was for Tammy and Victor [at this stage in the race]?

LaKisha: I think that in certain instances it was an advantage.  Like say in yesterday's episode when they were looking for the next clue.  Because they could speak the language, they found out really quickly that it was right next door where for us we didn't find that out.

But the other part of that too is that they are [still] at the mercy of the cab drivers.  Even though they speak the language, I think it's pretty tough to -- I mean if you have a cab driver that doesn't know where he's going then it doesn't matter if you can speak the language. I think that in some instances it's an advantage and in other instances you're still on the same page.

Reality TV World: LaKisha, a couple of weeks ago there was a story about how you're openly gay but how that wasn't featured anywhere in the [show]. Was that your decision or was that someone else's decision?

LaKisha: I think it was CBS' decision just because this is a race so I think [the teams] have certain labels and we were 'the athletic sisters' and they really wanted to focus on that aspect of our relationship.  And I think they did a great job of that because from the beginning of the race with us adjusting to each other to the end of the race [with] us really supporting and working well as a team, I think they really captured that.

And you know, it's just one of those things where I have big breadth. There's different characteristics of me that make me who I am, from being a woman, to being African-American, to being a sister... it could be as a teacher... it could be as a lesbian.  You know there's so many aspects of me so I guess they picked what they felt would really be fitting for us at that moment.

No, that wasn't my decision because my family knows about me and my friends know about me.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: According to a CBS spokesperson, LaKisha's sexual orientation would have "definitely" been mentioned if it had been deemed, similar to the gay father and son team of Mel and Mike White, to be a "major story point" of her The Amazing Race participation.  The show has also similarly not noted the orientation of openly gay "Mother and Son" team member Luke Adams, the spokesperson noted.]

Reality TV World: Jen, can you talk a little bit about those clue box incidents with Luke?  Based upon what was shown [on TV], it looked like Luke was at least as responsible for what happened there.

Jennifer: Everything they showed and aired on TV was exactly what happened.  There's no, you know some people say believe half of what you see and none of what you hear, but if you see it and it's on TV -- I mean it wasn't edited to the point where it was [even] choppy or what have you.

What happened is what happened.  There's kind of no room for error but there's really nothing I can say because everything that was explained at the mat and on television by myself was what happened and that's all that I can go from.

Reality TV World: Were you guys how surprised how strongly Margie reacted?

LaKisha: Oh yeah...

Jennifer: I was definitely taken back and honestly I was very disappointed and very shocked at her reaction, definitely, but to each their own.

Reality TV World: According to Phil's blog, that argument at the Pit Stop there after actually went on for about 30 minutes, is that accurate?

LaKisha: Well...

Jennifer: It was more like us standing there and them yelling, yeah.

LaKisha: It did, it did go on for about that long, yeah... with Luke pretty upset, walking around and you know, being very dramatic about the situation and you know, once we made it to the Pit Stop [and] that leg of the race was over we were like okay, that's the end...

Jennifer: We were tired, we had run across China... let's go to sleep, so... (laughs)

Reality TV World: Did that change your overall opinion of Margie and Luke or did it just reinforce whatever opinion you already had?

LaKisha: I think that in the instance, just because we don't hold grudges, that when it came down to that next day starting of the leg that we were you know, pretty much over it.  [It was] water on the bridge, we're in a competition.

[But] I must say that since watching the other episodes of the show I'm definitely disappointed because it's very evident that you know, they didn't [consider it] water under the bridge.  They were still, [holding] a grudge.... they definitely held a grudge and we didn't and so...

Reality TV World: So you weren't aware that they had held that grudge then until actually viewing back the episodes now?

LaKisha: Yes.

Reality TV World: Can you guys talk a little bit about how you ended up on the show? Who originally [wanted to] apply and why?

Jennifer: I definitely have been a fan of the show, so I applied to it and you know, I originally applied for Survivor but I decided, you know, to change my mind and apply for The Amazing Race.

But the whole process of filling out the application and the video, I mean things just worked out and I asked my sister if she wanted to do it with me and she said 'I don't even know what you're talking about, what's the show?' but all she watches in Law & Order so she had no clue about the show.

So once I said 'You know, watch a couple, I really want to do this with you' and she was like 'Oh, okay, this will be awesome, you know we can do all this and blah, blah, blah.'  She got a little bit more excited than I did that's for sure.  But yeah, I was always a fan so I was the one that kind of applied for the both of us!

(both laugh)

Reality TV World: what was your favorite overall experience while you were out there?

LaKisha: Um, we were talking about before when we were in Thailand and we had a really tough leg and we left our bags [behind] you know, and all of that... (Jennifer laughs)

And I think our relationship really changed at that point because instead of us like fighting and really arguing and being frustrated with each other we just kind of took everything with a grain of salt and we laughed.

I mean when our one cab driver stopped and asked about 15 people where to go and took us to five different locations the only thing with did was like laugh hysterically like the whole time when we really thought we were about to be eliminated.  It's not that we didn't take it seriously, it was just 'what else could happen, what other bad luck could happen.'

But between that and the swimming episode where my sister really kind of wanted to give up and didn't and overcame her fear and finished strong -- those are probably my two favorite moments.

Jennifer: Same as mine.  I really just have to go back and just think there is another one where we're in the car and for some reason they put in the fact that my sister sneezes funny and when her sneeze made the show it was like okay 'sneeze' and [then] 'God bless you, God bless you' and then I tell her to shut up.  (LaKisha laughs)

I didn't even know I did that, but that's something I always do to her every time because she sneezes like that (both laugh)

So it was almost like a reflex that -- at some point we just completely disregarded the cameras and that's how we are.  However they depicted us, they way they depicted us on the show, that's the way we really are is it was just like word vomit... I really told her to shut up when she sneezed and I was laughing hysterically at that as well.  There were a lot of enjoyable moments, definitely.

Reality TV World: Your least enjoyable would be the gross food task at the end?

Jennifer: Um... I did upchuck there a couple of times, but... yeah, yeah, that has to be the most disgusting (LaKisha laughs) because I can't even comprehend anybody voluntarily eating that, there's just no way.

Reality TV World: How about for you LaKisha, [your] least favorite?

LaKisha: Oh, there was a moment, honestly Siberia was probably my least favorite leg because it was so cold (laughs)

I'm a warm weather, nice weather type of person.  But there really wasn't a moment. Even though I wasn't thrilled about having to do gymnastics (Jennifer laughs) -- I mean I'm 6' 1" so what 6' 1" gymnast do you know? (laughs)

So it took me a lot to watch that episode.

Reality TV World: What aspect of the show surprised you the most?

Jennifer: Nothing really surprised us.  The entire race, you can't predict it, and that's what all the people, all the people that watch the show -- you can't predict it.  When we watch it we're seeing it for the first time just like they're seeing it because although we lived through it we don't know how they're going to edit it and everything.

So it's kind of a situation where, my sister and I watch it with friends [and] we're seeing it for the first time just like they are so we get that excitement and it resurfaces when we go to all these places and we see 'Wow, I forgot we did that' or 'Wow, I forgot I said that.'  It's just a combination of everything that it's simply amazing to experience and I'm extremely happy I did it with my sister.

Urine Trouble: Amazing Race's Kisha and Jen Explain Pee Break, How to Eat Starfish

When you have to go, you have to go — even if $1 million is on the line. Jennifer Hoffman prioritized her bladder over finding the Pit Stop on this week's Amazing Race, and she and sister, LaKisha, were eventually eliminated. But was the ill-timed potty break the cause of their demise in Beijing, as host Phil Keoghan so sternly implied? Find out below, as well as their thoughts on being U-Turned and their take of the infamous Pit-fight with Margie and Luke.

TVGuide.com: So the big question is — did the pee break cost you a spot in the final 3?
Jen: No, it did not! [Laughs] We really don't know how far behind we were, but it wasn't seconds like Phil said. It wasn't hours either. There's no real concept of time when you're racing, so we have no clue. ... It didn't take me five minutes to pee, but the Bird's Nest is pretty big, so being dropped on the other side of it, it'll take a while, especially when all the tourists are there still trying to see the Olympic center. Things happen for a reason and we don't regret anything that we did.
Kisha: We're going to say minutes, but he made it seem closer. There were a couple different factors [that caused us to lose]: Jaime and Cara's cab driver driving extremely fast and dropping them off at the correct location. Ours drove slow and dropped us further away. It wasn't just the pee break that cost us the spot.

TVGuide.com: Did you think about holding it in or peeing in your pants?
Jen: No, because it became painful at that point, to hold it.
Kisha: In hindsight, you can say, "Oh, she should've peed in her pants." But when you're caught up in the moment, that's what happens.

TVGuide.com: Were you surprised it was Tammy and Victor who U-Turned you?
Kisha: No, because it's a strategic move. You never know what people are going to do. If we were first, we wouldn't have U-Turned anyone — we didn't U-Turn anyone at the blind U-Turn — but if we were in third place, then we probably would've, but not in a first-place position.

TVGuide.com: Not even for Margie and Luke?
Kisha: Well, I wasn't thinking about that! [Laughs] We ran a very classy race. We wouldn't U-Turn someone because they didn't like us. That wasn't part of our strategy. If we were going to U-Turn someone, it would've been to put us in a better position or to gain us some time.

TVGuide.com: This brings us to the fight at the Pit Stop a few weeks ago —
Jen: [Laughs] It was blown out of proportion on their part. You're put in those situations and you don't know how people are going to react. I took full responsibility — heat of the moment, body check, what have you. I think the disability card was pulled at that point with her saying, "He's lived with this his whole life." There are stressors I'm sure she was going through from the race that built up and we just got the backlash of that — that's my assumption. Her reaction to that was completely unwarranted and unnecessary.

TVGuide.com: Did you talk about it afterward?
Kisha: We were over it. It was over, said and done. I've been disappointed watching the show because it seems they still hold a grudge toward us. We didn't. We haven't talked to them [one-on-one] since the show ended.

TVGuide.com: Let's talk about last week with your fear of the pool, Jen. Was your meltdown exaggerated in any way?
Jen: I say this with all sincerity — what everyone saw on television was progress. [Laughs] People were surprised I did the dive, let alone swim, and my thinking was that it was a shorter distance to go from the dive to the edge of the pool than to go the length of an Olympic-sized swimming pool twice. Either way, it was going to take time!

TVGuide.com: What was it like eating those bugs?
Jen: They were absolutely disgusting! Note that there aren't any crickets or starfish on menus in the U.S. I didn't unhinge my jaw like Cara seemed to have done and swallowed them whole. It still amazes me that she ate that so fast. I was like, "You have no taste buds! You have no gag reflex!" I couldn't do it. I threw up a couple times.

TVGuide.com: How do you even eat a starfish?
Jen: Apparently, you open the legs and dig out their guts. You can't necessarily eat their shell. I ate some of the shell and they said, "No, just eat the guts." "Awesome, thank you." It was going down hard and sometimes certain things you eat, you have the automatic reflex to upchuck it. That's what was happening at a certain point.

TVGuide.com: Who did you cheer for after you were eliminated?
Kisha: Even though they U-Turned us, we were still rooting for Tammy and Victor. They ran a similar race to ours and weren't malicious or anything.

The Amazing Race

Amazing Race’s Jen & Kisha: We Weren’t Laughing at Luke
May 5, 2009

When you gotta go, you gotta go. Unfortunately for University of Louisville volleyball coach Jennifer Hoffman, 25, nature urgently called during Sunday’s mad dash to the Beijing pit stop on The Amazing Race. She and her sister Kisha Hoffman, a 29-year-old youth program coordinator from the Bronx, New York, talked to PEOPLE.com about how it was more than a bathroom break that sent them home. They also weighed in on their feud with Margie and Luke and the legal team’s language advantage. — Carrie Bell

You’re the first team to be eliminated because you stopped to go to the bathroom. Looking back, do you wish you had just peed your pants?
Jen: In hindsight, we did not lose the race simply because of a bathroom break. I have gotten a lot of e-mails and phone calls and text messages saying, “I would have just peed on myself,” but you never know until you are in the situation. I don’t regret stopping. I had to pee badly and it wouldn’t have been pretty.
Kisha: There were more factors than just the pee break that made us come in behind [the cheerleaders]. They had a fast cab driver. They got dropped off closer. They must have no gag reflex. Cara ate [the bugs] so fast.

Was it hard to accept going out in this way after you survived the cheese hill, your fear of drowning, bungee jumping, walking around Thailand without shoes?
Kisha: It was tough to swallow. When we finished the swimming challenge and my sister overcame her biggest fear, we knew we were last. But when Phil said the leg was continuing, we felt rejuvenated. Thailand was another time when we thought, Oh my gosh, we’re gone. But we survived that too. It was hard but I’m not mad at Jen. She couldn’t help that she had to pee. She played a very strong race and gave it her best shot.

Which of the street treats was the worst?
Jen: I threw up a couple of times. They were all gross. The starfish was the worst. When you eat fish, you don’t want it to taste like fish. The starfish tasted like the ocean. If you are ever thinking about ordering starfish off the menu, don’t.

Did you think you had almost gotten through the race without having to face your fear of water?
Jen: Oh, heck yeah. But I knew it was coming. I knew there was no way we wouldn’t have to swim at some point because they knew that Tammy and I couldn’t swim. Had it been anybody else other than my sister with me, it would have been a done deal.

It was one of the more special race moments because lesser people would have gotten very angry with their partner. Talking her off the ledge must have felt good?
Kisha: I have never let her quit before. I knew she would regret it if she quit. It is an athlete thing, a coaching thing and a sister thing. She had been so strong this whole time so it was tough as a sister to see her breaking down. It helps that I am not a yeller. I am pretty patient. I just wanted to do whatever I could to help her push through it. I was proud of her.

Settle the debate: Were you laughing at Luke while he was explaining his side of the fight to Phil?
Kisha: No. From the first episode, Mike called me giggles because I was always laughing. It’s something I’ve done my whole life. They were frustrated we came in first. I was disappointed with the way they handled the situation. We were like, “Everything is said and done. Let’s move on.” It was obvious they didn’t feel the same way. I work with kids. I’m a role model. I wouldn’t want any kid I coach to be laughing at someone with disabilities. I actually laughed not at his signing but because his version of the story was so different from ours. Whatever baggage you come into the race with is there for the whole race. I think Margie has always been his support system and protector … and I’m sure there are times he has been made fun of, but I was definitely not laughing at his signing.

It looked like an accidental bump blown out of proportion. Now that you’ve gotten distance from the situation, what are your thoughts on the feud with Margie and Luke?
Kisha: It was absolutely blown out of proportion.
Jen: I was extremely happy with the way we were edited because that’s how we are in real life. That’s what happened. It’s a competition. There will be feather ruffling and trying to get to the clue box first even if it only knocks off two seconds, but they blew it out of proportion in how they reacted.
Kisha: I don’t approve of my sister calling him a b—h, but she took accountability for her actions and apologized. I don’t think they admitted they were guilty.

What did you think about the language advantage that Victor and Tammy had?
Kisha: I think there are two sides to that. It was disappointing that there were three legs in China, and they definitely had an advantage there. Like [Sunday's episode], they knew the next clue was right next door while all the other teams were walking around lost with paint burning their face. But even if you speak the language, you could get a taxi driver who doesn’t know where he is going.

The restaurant translations were hilarious. How hard was the U-turn task?
Jen: It didn’t take a long as we thought it would. Once we got past being pissed that we were U-turned, we came up with a plan to get through it. It was like Chinese phonics and we only had to do it four of five times. It took like 15 minutes. Think of the irony if Tammy and Victor had chosen to U-turn Cara and Jaime after all the issues they have had with languages on the Race. We didn’t know the extent of her issues, but everywhere we would go we heard her say, “Why aren’t they speaking English?” I was like, “We’re the minority here. They don’t have speak our language.”

Did the experience bring you closer?
Jen: I think our relationship got better. It is natural for families to fight and bicker, but we got closer and I felt like the way we were edited is the way we are.
Kisha: Our relationship definitely grew from the beginning to the end and I understand her better now. I am glad I did this once-in-a-lifetime experience with my sister. I am proud of how we did. We ran a classy race and we did it as a team.

The Amazing Race 14′: A chat with sisters Kisha and Jen
Sisters LaKisha Hoffman, 28, and Jennifer Hoffman, 24, stayed true to each other through thick and thin. When  Jen struggled in the swimming challenge, Kisha kept her on track. Even in the face of elimination on the 11th lap when the sisters missed the finish line by seconds because Jen stopped to use the bathroom, there was never any blame on Jen. They went far with their competitive spirit and athletic abilities and had a great time. I got to ask them a few more behind-the-scenes questions about the race and congratulated them on a good run of it.
Of all the countries you went to, what was your favorite travel destination?
Kisha: Mine was definitely Thailand. I enjoyed the beautiful scenery and weather.
Jen: I liked Thailand and also India.
Kisha: Jen traveled more internationally than I did. I enjoyed the opportunity to get out there and appreciated all the things I experienced.
What was your least favorite country?
Jen: No I enjoyed every country we ransacked and ran through.
Kisha: Siberia was so cold. I’m definitely not a cold-weather person. That was an adjustment for me.

How did the race affect your relationship as sisters? Sisters fight, right? But we only saw you supporting each other. Were there any off-camera squabbles?
Jen: People say that like it’s such a surprise that we got along. They depicted us very well. That’s the way my sister and I are on a normal basis. Usually we just communicate by phone calls and text messages. We have our arguments over the phone sometimes. That question surprises me.  Everything you saw on TV was completely us.
Kisha. It showed we had a tough time adjusting to each other in the beginning. But we learned to work together, and by the end of it — as sisters and as a team — we progressed from beginning to end.
What’s next for both of you?
Kisha:  I live in New York and work as a youth program coordinator and basketball coach.
Jen: Currently I’ll go back to Louisville to be a coach in women’s volleyball. I want to stay in the realm of college athletics. I also dabble in modeling. I’m only 25, single, no kids. It’s great being single.
Oh yeah, has the show brought in any romantic fan mail?
Kisha: I have actually.
Jen: I haven’t.
Kisha: I did earlier today.
Jen: Get out, I didn’t even know about that.
Kisha, you sound disappointed that you have, and Jen, you sound disappointed that you haven’t.
Jen: (laughs)
Kisha: I’ve gotten straight, funny and good e-mails. But it’s funny that they can fall in love with you just from watching the show.

Lots of the challenges asked for one person to participate. Was it difficult to choose between the two of you who would do what challenge?
Kisha: No, I think we had a pretty good idea before we decided. Jen is not afraid of heights, so if it had heights she’d do it. If it was a water one, I’d do it. There wasn’t any situation where we had to fight about who’d go to the roadblock. In our last leg, when it was the massage, she said, “I’ll do it.” And I said I’ll do it based on the number of roadblocks left. My mindset was getting into the final three. I wanted my sister to complete the last roadblock.
It was clear you were not the best of friends with Margie and Luke, was there a team that you did bond with?
Jen: We definitely bonded with Mike and Mel. Mike is an amazing person and has a good heart. We recognized that early on and worked with them during the bungee jump.
Kisha. I think everyone communicated through group e-mails. We spent last weekend with Jamie and Cara. Some pretty good friendships may grow out of this.
Were you surprised that Tammy and Victor pulled the U-Turn on you?
Kisha: No, it was strategic. They had said if it came down to a footrace we would win. Other teams were intimidated by that. It was disappointing, but we were not surprised.

Chasing Cabs and Chewing Chinese Starfish with Kisha and Jen of The Amazing Race

The last couple of legs of the 14th season of The Amazing Race, specifically legs 9 and 10 through Thailand and China, proved that the race can change at the drop of a dime. Although the sister team of LaKisha and Jennifer Hoffman were one of the teams to beat during this season of The Amazing Race, overcoming a setback in Thailand when they were forced to retrace their steps to retrieve their bags, the sisters were stopped dead in their tracks when Jen was forced to confront her fear of water during a swimming pool challenge in China. Despite trying her best, with her older sister giving her sibling support, Jen fell victim to one of her worst fears since she didn't know how to swim. Still, Jen soldiered on in the pool to eventually complete the leg and finish strong in last place at the mat in front of The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan.

To their surprise, the China leg of the race wasn't over, as Phil handed Kisha and Jen their next clue, and the sisters staved off Amazing Race elimination. When The Amazing Race resumed this week for leg #10, Kisha and Jen continued behind the other teams but were eventually handed a U-Turn by brother and sister team Tammy and Victor who had an easier time in China since they spoke the language. After making up major Amazing Race ground to catch the cheerleader team of Jaime and Cara in Beijing, Kisha and Jen squared off against the cheerleaders in an eating competition that saw Jen struggle with choking back grasshoppers, larva and a deep fried starfish while Cara chomped down the creature critters like a deep fried starfish eating champ at a Chinese state fair.

When both teams were done with their delicacies, the race truly became amazing when both female teams were neck-in-neck en route to the Olympic pit-stop. While racing in a cab through the streets of Beijing, Jen began to squirm, clenching her teeth, as she had to stop to use the washroom after drinking so much water to wash down her starfish minutes before. When they hit the mat in front of Phil in what looked to be seconds behind Jaime and Cara, Kisha and Jen were eliminated from The Amazing Race after nearly reaching the million dollar final three.

The next day Kisha and Jen called in to TheDeadbolt for a few minutes of exclusive one-on-one pit-stop time to fill us in on how they made it through the last couple of Amazing Race legs, how the race brought them closer together as sisters, what they thought of their altercation with Luke And Margie, what it's like to eat deep friend starfish, and whether Jen now takes a new approach to undergarments when she goes running after jogging through the streets in Russia.

THE DEADBOLT: So how close behind Jaime and Cara were you at the end of the race?

LAKISHA HOFFMAN: We don’t really know. Phil said seconds, but it wasn’t seconds. We were guessing, but we don’t have an exact idea.

THE DEADBOLT: You know, I thought the real turning point was when Cara horked down that nasty starfish so fast.

JENNIFER HOFFMAN: [laughs] I like that word, "horked," I’m gonna steal that from you.

THE DEADBOLT: [laughs] Did you guys even think about that? They just breezed through it.

JEN: Well, we didn’t really see them eat. So our astonishment came when we were on the mat and were the last team to arrive. We were like, ‘Whoa.’ And then us seeing it yesterday, we just saw her pretty much unhinge her jaw and just swallow it whole.

THE DEADBOLT: [laughs] So what does a starfish taste like?

JEN: Oh, my God! I tried to explain this to my sister, Kisha. I told her, ‘It tastes like fish.’ And I said this a lot, ‘If you eat fish and if it tastes like fish, it’s bad.’ So the starfish tastes like the ocean. It was pretty much bad even though it’s fried and I could add ketchup and hot sauce and salt and pepper. It didn’t matter, it was gross.

THE DEADBOLT: It was impressive that you actually got through the language barrier at the restaurant. How was that for you guys?

KISHA: Initially we were like, ‘Wow, how do we accomplish this?’ We were a little nervous and that’s why we didn’t choose that task in the beginning. But it was just kind of like, 'Okay, we have to do it. Let’s go figure out how to do it," and we just tried to phonetically sound it out in English and try to put their accent on it. I mean, I’m still surprised even watching it, even though it’s quite hilarious to see, and I don’t know if it’s true if we were saying exactly what they were saying or if they did their own little captions. But yeah, I’m surprised we were able to do that U-Turn and do it so well in a timely fashion.

THE DEADBOLT: Kisha, in Thailand when the bags were left behind, did you feel similar to how Jen felt in the swimming pool?

JEN: [laughs] Her fear of leaving bags does not equate to me being in a swimming pool ...

KISHA: Did I feel guilty if you didn’t complete it, or something like that? I don’t know. That was an episode I didn’t watch. But I wouldn’t have taken the total blame, because, initially, at that point I was like, ‘Oh, there goes my shoes. There go the passports.’ Then we went on and after that she was like, ‘We should go back.’ And I was like, ‘No, we should keep going.’ It was just one of those things. You’re in a race, you’re stressed, and you make decisions that are sometimes good, sometimes bad. So we were able to get through that and continue on. I think seeing her fear of swimming was a totally different experience, but we got through it.

THE DEADBOLT: So how did the altercation with Luke and Margie affect you guys for the rest of the race? Did it at all?

KISHA: No. I mean, I don’t know if this is from our experience of being athletes, but things happen in competition and the dynamics of the race can be physically exhausting. It’s like, 'Okay, it happened, it’s over with, and we move on.' But from watching the show, I don’t think they have the same attitude. But we’re just like, 'whatever, move on.' So it didn’t affect us at all, not even one bit.

THE DEADBOLT: Did you guys patch things up, or was it a case of just keep on moving?

JEN: For us, I think it was just pretty much keep on moving, because we don’t hold grudges and you can’t lie about what’s been shown because it’s on tape. So there’s really no way of saying 'this is what happened' as opposed to 'this,' so we took full responsibility for our actions. I think that’s where my sister and I are a little disappointed. They didn’t do the same, they just pretty much placed all of the blame on us, and we 'did this' and we 'did that,' and they did nothing. So you can’t really say anything about it. But we were over it once we hit the mat because we were so exhausted. We just ran through China.

THE DEADBOLT: Was there anything we didn’t see that you wished we did see?

JEN: I think they portrayed our relationship to a "T". I know we’re very proud of the way they portrayed us as sisters and our progression and our relationship. So, no, there’s nothing that was on air that we were like, ‘Oh, my God! Don’t show that.’

THE DEADBOLT: How did the race bring you closer together as sisters?

KISHA: I think we gained a better appreciation for each other. I think that the way we learned to communicate, change, and I just think we gained a better respect for each other. I said before that we’ve done a lot of the same things but never together, so this is our opportunity to put our strengths together and compliment our weaknesses and really grow as a team. I know I’m personally proud to have done this with my sister.

JEN: I think it definitely made our relationship better, because we had an adjustment period in the first couple of episodes where we had to get used to being around each other a lot. But as the race progressed, everybody got to see how we really interact with each other and it just made it better. I think the turning point for me was in Thailand when we forgot our bags and we got to the mat and we had to go back and get them and we were still in the race. I think at that point, for me, it started to be more about my relationship with my sister and me experiencing this with her, as opposed to, 'Okay, we have to do anything that we need to do to win a million dollars.' So that was definitely the turning point where I was like, ‘You know, I’m going to enjoy this with my sister and we’re doing well and we’re communicating well. It’s out of our hands. We’re doing the best that we can and any other things that we can’t control, they’re going to come and we’re going to take it with a grain of salt.'

THE DEADBOLT: So, Jen, I remember you didn’t have any underwear in Russia. Do you wear underwear now when you go running?

KISHA: [laughs]
JEN: [laughs] Now let me clarify this. It’s not that I don’t wear underwear, because you need underwear. I mean, you NEED underwear. I wear dresses, you know? You gotta have a pair of underwear on at least. I’m actually a fan of underwear, so I have a lot of it. So it’s not that I don’t wear underwear, but in that situation - and I know my sister can understand why I didn’t have underwear, necessarily, because we’re athletes - it’s extremely uncomfortable. I don’t own a thong because they’re extremely uncomfortable.

Just imagine running around the world and you’re trying to pick wedgies out of your butt. That’s uncomfortable. So instead of bringing underwear, we brought spandex, because I’ve lived in spandex for six years. I play volleyball so I have a gazillion laying around. So in order to have a more comfortable race, we decided to bring spandex and that’s something that people can run in. So that wasn’t stripping down to your skivvies, because stripping down to your skivvies I would’ve been naked. That’s where that came from. I didn’t have underwear because I wanted to run a comfortable race. So I brought spandex instead.

You know, I have to say...I recently just finished simultaneously re-watching TAR 14 while burning it to DVD to clear space on my living room DVR, and honestly, the "nervous giggle" or however Kisha called it in the China leg during the pitstop confrontation with Luke was totally present on the very first ep and throughout all subsequent ep's as well!! (and I'm a huge Luke fan too!)

That said, Jen totally pushed Luke at the cluebox when Luke clearly beat her to it and was very instigative in most of the following run-in's. But I have to give some innocent points to Kisha as much as I did like Luke!

Same thing I saw as far as Kisha's laugh. She was not laughing at Luke because of his disability and Marge was so wrong for saying she was.

FYI: Jen is an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Louisville!
