Heee...

Okay...speculating now and just tossing this out there...

The one gap we have so far in our Timeline (see page 1) so far is May 26-27--after Hue and before HK.

Based on a little hint I was given  :angel: and based on geographical proximity, puddin and I  have been talking about TAIWAN for the missing location.

Apskip---can we make it fit with flights? Vietnam to Taiwan to HK?

Puddin and I think it might fit in well here...

Peach,
You backed off then due to my concerns about Taiwan not fitting into the time space well. Guess what? That's still true. If Taipei is the place(which is most likely), then arrival there would be either mid-afternoon to late evening of May 26 at the earliest. Either way, we will see hours of operation and the Taipei area pitstop will not be possible to start until the evening of the 27th. The first group can take the first reasonable morning of May 28 flight to Hong Kong, but the second will be many hours after that. Some teams can get to Hong Kong in time for a sighting on the 28th(I don't remember when that would be but someone who knows can remind us), but the lagging teams will probably not be able to.

I know I did... (and I wish I hadn't, :lol:)

The tip from Macau turned out to be true and looks as though the Taiwan one may be correct too!

Oh I expect they'll figure something out--bunch them or use charters or something...

It is looking like Taiwan from what Neobie and Boingo and Slowhatch have found so far anyway...

:sucks  Hey peach, looks like a food challenge... time to dust off the Travel Channel "Bizarre Foods" episodes from previous TAR season and maybe we will finally have a "stinky tofu" challenge.   :funny:
Or even what my parents like to call "thousand year old eggs". They eat still eat them. I find them disgusting, but they love them. Maybe this is what they'll eat in Taiwan.

Thousand Year Old Egg.

They are having a really hard time with it whatever it is... do you eat those with chopsticks?
Anthony's oyster vermicelli looks good--until they substitute  the pig intestine for the oysters then :barf

Can we make out anything from the night drive?

Check out the pic I just posted above your post, peach. This would be quite interesting if they had to eat the egg.

I thought it would be useful to project ahead for the flights Taipei to Hong Kong. This must be one of the most dense routes in the world. There are 17 flights on China Air, Cathay Pacific, Eva, DragonAir or Thai Air between 6am and noon. Then there are 17 more between noon and 6pm. The several more after 6pm will not likely figure into ARA3. The flights range betweem 1 hour 35 minutes and 1 hour 50 mintues. Timing of release from the Taipei pitstop will determine which of the many flights makes most sense for any team.

Would the teams by any chance go Hue>HK>Taiwan? Or is that slower?

Thank you scuzneck! We do love our TARs!

Okay, from the ep 3 thread:
http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17612.0.html

Neobie gave us some great screencaps (and a vid to come later) of the preview:

Tiny vidcaps! (I apologize! EagleSpirit0 I'm not sure if you can pick anything out from here...)

Next, on The Amazing Race Asia...

Teams hit the roads...

Geoff: *singing* Driving on a freeway...

Geoff: *singing* We don't know where we're going!

For a challenge that will drive them over the edge... (3 o' clock? 12.15?)

Ida / Tania: Mmmpgh!

Kapil: Key's not coming out!
An unprecedented crisis...

Kapil: We. Quit.
Niroo: We want to go back home. That's all.

Based on license tag evaluation and highway signs, the consensus in the ep 3 thread so far is that this takes place in TAIWAN.  Which goes along with a tip I received months ago as well...

Teams are also spotted eating something nasty...

Peach: It's just not economical in use of time. The connections in Hanoi or Saigon are fairly brief. In order to reach Hong Kong from Hue, you have to fly through Hanoi or Saigon. There is a similar small connect time, but you then have the flight path through Hong Kong and another connection there. The depart Hue/arrive Hong Kong times are:

0800 1355
0910 2235
1255 2000
1340 2235

It's very clear that even before you add on connect time (probably small) and the flight time (probably 1 hour 35) that this is an inferior route to Taiwan.

On the subject of eating something nasty, here is the scoop on "1000 Year Old Eggs":

"Thousand Year Old Eggs" are really only about 100 days old.

Duck eggs are used instead of chicken eggs.

The raw eggs are buried in the ground in a mixture of clay, lime, salt, tea and straw. I have seen recipes calling for pine ash instead of clay.

This mixture leaches into the shell and egg, making the interior smooth and creamy—like a ripe avocado in texture.

The yolk turns a vivid green and the white various shades of yellow, blue and green. It has been compared to the colors of a black opal.

To eat them, wash the eggs clean, shell them and slice into quarters. The flavor is rich, pungent and cheese-like.

A culinary expert has not looked for them specifically but was told that you can buy these eggs in American Chinese markets where they are called Pine Flower Eggs.

Now that doesn't sound too nasty. So the eating challenge probably is stinky tofu, which is one of the few things I have ever seen Andrew Zimmer of Bizarre Foods be unable to eat beacuse it is so nasty.

Stinky tofu is not bad really. It's fine compared to the 1,000 year old eggs.

Because it drove us nuts, here are some clips of the little yellow house--this is after teams leave the bus station and are walking towards the Caltex place:

Note to self, when searching future locations/legs for TARA, always include Caltex in your search.

 :funny:  Did a quick Vietnamese to English translation of the individual words on the building, and here's what I get...  (depending on the accent marks over the letters)

phong = to bestow
hàu = oyster
háu = have one's desire met
hào = trench,ditch
háo = greedy, eager for fame
vè = mudguard
ve = tick scar (on the eyelid) phial, vial laped, revers
vẻ = look, appearance, sound
vẽ = draw, to paint to contrive
vé = ticket
.... and so on and so on.......

I guess it's a ticket booth (where ones desires are met)   :lol: :funny: :snicker:

edited to add:
phòng = room
phóng = to throw, to launch, to let out

I think it could be the bus station itself--they are leaving there heading to the Caltex site--not near any ruins yet...

Maybe I am quite blind, however, I do not see any Chinese characters in any of the pictures.  I can read Chinese, but I am not good at figuring out how to blow up pictures or looking at pixellated images. 0_o  1,000 year old egg is delicious actually.

In reference to flying from Hue, you should also take into account that Da Nang Airport is extremely close and is a much better airport with more flights.  Most people who do not arrive in Hue by train or bus usually take the plane to Da Nang and the bus/train from there.
