I've attached a kmz for Birkenau; not much to look at, it's in the fuzzylands about 35 miles from Krakow. (I don't want to be the grouch, so I'll say this about it and shut up: I think the whole idea is rather tasteless. Documentaries? Yes. Game shows? No.)
There's a branch of the Curie Institute in Warsaw (the main one is in Paris) on Roentgen street on the south edge of town, but I don't have any pictures yet.

Yeah - I really hope that all the other teams do as D/K appear to be doing and take a moment of silence to remember all the people who were murdered.

Thanks everyone. ;D

Oh, wow. Birkenau. Hopefully it's just a Route Info, and they would only stop for a clue. But seeing Uchenna/Joyce reading something, it would seem that they're required to do something in there. Or maybe it's the ground rules of the site. There's only six teams left, and pretty respectful people I believe, so I don't think they would treat the place like "just another Route Info stop."

Yes, peach. The Salt Mines look pretty. Hopefully they do go there.

I'm liking the dummy detour, if it indeed involved getting an X-ray of the clue inside the dummy. Although that sounds expensive. The clue would have to be of something hard in order to be X-rayed, like hydroxyapatite, or something muscly (?) like lung tissue.

Oh, and Gabinet 5 = Level 5? :lol3:

  OK, just jumping in here to compare maps of detour tasks.  If puddin's x-ray place is where C/M take the dummy, then it's not very far from the piano tuning task (just a little more west).  Or maybe not.   :-\    :carryon:

Hey--I've been waiting for that map! Thanks G-man!

But it is too teeny for me to use and gets all blurry when I make it bigger--any way to enlarge it please? Thanks--MAPS needs it!

Help from a fern:
  • The first cap shows the fern with her pack and Mirna's (red) pack, Charla is carrying her small black pack
  • The second cap shows Charla carrying Mirna's pack. Who's carrying the black pack? Charla? The fern? hard to tell. So far, so good. They pulled this stunt in Uruguay and got away with it.
  • The third cap shows the fern helping with the dummy, which probably isn't allowed.

I am so happy (may not be the right term) that the producers are not going to waste a trip to Poland without some form of rememberance to the horrors that happened there.

Both my sisters and my brother have been to tour concentration camps and all three say its probably the most moving thing htey have ever done.

Hopefully the racers will respect this.  And hopefully the producers are smart enough not to make it so much of a task as an event.

A good example of how to handle this was Season 6 when tehy had to go through the final door leading to the ships to sail the slaves away.

Even annoying teams like Jonathan and Victoria and Adam and Rebecca were behaving themselves properly.

Warsaw University is just across the street from the Czapski Palace (with the Horse statue and the BQ's) and two blocks further up we saw C and M waving for a cab by the Zacheta and Augsburg Protestant Church.

This seems to be the C and M show; way too much emphasis on their deeds and little else of the others.

Detour most likely would not be either tuning the piano or the x ray; UNLESS C and M started one, gave up and tried the next one.

Getting pretty confusing; we need some kind of scenario to hang our hats on:

One Idea:

Day One:  Hydrofoil from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam

Fly Dar es Salaam to Nairobi

                Fly Nairobi to Amsterdam

                Fly Amsterdam to Krakow

Day Two:  Arrive in Krakow

Make visits to places we have not seen (lots of ideas) but most likely the Wawal area and hopefully trip to Wieliczka Salt Mines

Travel to Oswiecim and visit Auschwitz-Birkenau for rememberance visit

Travel to Pieskowa Skala for DETOUR - Knight's Night Off

Pit stop in the Palace:  "you got to be kiddin?" because it is TBC

Day Three:  Travel to Warsaw

Many places to visit and tasks to do

Ostrogski or Czapski Palace to do the Piano Tune

Warsaw University for the X Ray

Perhaps something at the Memorial to the Heroes of the Warsaw Uprising

Finally to Lazienki Park to find the statue of King Jan III Sobieski (on the bridge of troubled waters) DETOUR find a rowboat and row to the Palace on the Water.  Get instructions here to go to pit stop

Pit stop on the path towards the White House in Lazienki Park

                  Philimination No. 6.

This is just an idea, please feel free to embelish it or tell me it is all wet and I will jump in to Lazienki Lake and cool off.

Here's a little extra information for those of you not familiar with the double meaning of the word Roentgen (English language spelling):

Roent·gen, Wilhelm Konrad 1845-1923.
German physicist who discovered x-rays and developed x-ray photography, revolutionizing medical diagnosis. He won a 1901 Nobel Prize.

roent·gen A unit of radiation exposure equal to the quantity of ionizing radiation that will produce one electrostatic unit of electricity in one cubic centimeter of dry air at 0°C and standard atmospheric pressure.   Obviously named after the discoverer of X-rays.

There is still a lot to work on for this episode!! What and where is the detour for LEG7 ? What and where is the Roadblock for LEG8? Does the Knight Roadblock come before or after the Detours in Warsaw?  :umn: Any chance the piano task is in Krakow?

Just getting some time info straight from Ep6:

This shot was taken here between 1:50 and 1:58 pm (assumes December 3rd)

Using the tall pole that casts a shadow straight to the camera and parallel to the building.

This means it took them 8 hours and 20 min to make the Dhow trip.
