RJ, I think my posts are out of sync with your question!
About the Dhow shadow in the GE image, that is some other day some other time. I was just amazed at how clear it is from the satellite view.
For the D&M shot the Sun has to be coming from the west (end of day) and actually a little bit north of west. That would throw the Dhow's shadow over D&M. At 5 pm the Sun was 13 degrees north of true west and 27 degrees above the horizon.

Sun Earth Moon AppletThe rest is figuring out where the picture was taken and just estimating the angles. Banzai found some program that helps to do this but I have never craked it open. It would swallow me up I'm afraid. So I just estimate as best I can. Sometimes I will throw in a Cosine correction (that's the effect where you can make an angle bigger or smaller when you view it obliquely).
