“Take this FWIW - I was talking to someone who saw TAR being filmed in Perth, and they said they saw an old couple walking around Fremantle with a cameraman, sound guy etc. They speculate they were around 50-60yrs old. They think it was a male/female couple or possibly male/male (they aren't completely sure, as they only got a glimpse of them). They couldn't remember what clothes/colours they were wearing.”

INSIDE COVER with Melissa Kent
ROTTO, FREO IN AMAZING RACE

Our very own Rottnest and Fremantle starred in the American television series The Amazing Race yesterday with camera crews and contestants dashing around like, well, Americans on a TV show.

Whispers reached IC that some non-schoolie visitors landed on the isle early yesterday and businesses were roped in to smooth the way for the crew and competitors.

Clearly the Rottnest Island Authority was ordered not to prattle to pesky media about the exciting event and issued a "no comment" to IC - a surefire confirmation of the rumour.

The Seven Network, which screens the popular series, was left out of the loop and had no idea WA was a destination for the show, which follows teams as they chase clues in a race around the world.

Luckily for us, a team of backpack toting Americans running around, shouting at each other and being chased by cameras on a small island is a little hard to hide.

Word has it the contestants began arriving at 3am with instructions to go to the top of the main lighthouse for their next clue.

There was a flurry of activity at the bike hire shop - where employees had also been silenced - and lots of running around Rotto streets, said onlookers.

The Rottnest Tearooms were charged with feeding the hungry visitors lunch, serving up biscuits, drinks and meat and salad rolls.

"It was pretty exciting", a tearoom spy said. "One of them ran around the back and asked our head chef where Fremantle Prison was."

Being shrewd, IC figured this must be the nest destination
and called the prison for the lowdown. It too had been gagged but Monday's public notices seem to confirm the story - a small item declared the prison would be closed on Wednesday for filming.

I can confirm that AR have been sited in Perth Western Australia in November, a friend works at the airport. There were about 4 teams noticed by staff. One of those teams has been given a fine because they had concealed food on them, they were trying to take chicken sandwiches off the airoplane.
Another team ( that had no money) was reprimanded for pushing to the front of the lines in customs.

On the drive to the airport , one team picks up a hitchhiker and takes some time to conduct international relations .
A Rivalry between two teams heats up after one duo tells the other that the next opportunity they get to use the yield against them they will.
All of the teams but one sit anxiously on their plane waiting to take off hoping that the duo straggling behind will not make it in time . Will they ?

Since the clues mention planes... The Oman tasks were done on Nov 20th. Assuming teams are flying from Muscat to Perth here is the schedule for Nov 21st. No matter which flight teams get on they all connect to the same flight in Dubai and arrive togther. I do wonder how one team could get behind the others with these late afternoon flights (unless the flight was just full). It is a long flight in which teams would arrive at 5:25 p.m. on Nov 22nd. This fits well with the Nov 23rd sightings and the fact that we see teams finding a hotel for the night in Fremantle.

Depart      Arrive          Carrier/Flight              Stop/Connex     Trip Time
8:40pm     5:25pm+1    EK 6469* / 0420         DXB 5:00 hrs.   16:45 hrs.
10:15pm   5:25pm+1    NL 0392 / EK 0420       DXB 3:35 hrs.   15:10 hrs.

Found a photo of the gear room for the tunnels tour (source (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27548719@N00/124723443/in/photostream/); ignore the misspelling, it's not that ugly). The look of it suggests a mandatory safety lecture and gear-up time for racers; and the tunnels are so narrow they'll probably post a number board and make people wait their turn.

Using the CBS clues and supsandlee's flight info, I propose the following.

The Frat Boys pick up a hitchhiker.  The Hippies would be more likely, but the third clue is about the Hippies, so I do not think we will have 2 Hippie clues.  My alternate is MoJo

I am not sure about the rivalry.

The third clues is about the Hippies.  Using the flight info, I propose that the Hippies miss the first flight to Dubai with the other 4 teams, but catch up on the second flight.  This would be most dramatic.

Going out on a limb here, but looks like BJ&T have finished their tasks on Rottnest Island and are running to catch the ferry back to the mainland.     ;)

Most definately Boingo  :jumpy: The mainland departure points for the ferry do not match (http://www.rottnestexpress.com.au/location.htm) so they are definately leaving the island. Good shadows too! Someone should be able to determine the time.

Gotta be the hippies, right?

Unless this coming leg in non elim, and were pushing ahead after the flight to the second aus. leg.

This siting described arriving in Perth so yes, it would be the hippies with no money.

With the teams in a customs line, it means they are entering Australia.  For travel within Australia, they would not need to go through customs.

Ferry arrives in Thompson's Bay (white arrow).  Likely spot for MoJo diving is Salmon Bay (blue arrow).  Perhaps they must ride their bikes (over 2.5 miles) from ferry to diving task.

EWWW then the Hippies are jerkoffs, i never  thought customs was so cut throat, nevermind a team has never lost the race being last out of customs and most of the time in recent seasons the producers start the teams together in the airport [i know they did it in Russia all teams ran out together aside from teams that exchanged money.  DD, BJT, FB, LML, RY all got out of the airport together.] and on the AR7 commentary Brian [or Greg] said in Peru they were all held us and then were told to go when the teams were together leaving the airport.

the hippies are clearly not nice guys. if this is true.

throwing in Turts spoilers , yeah some of his info is wrong but I do think he saw MOJO/RaYoyo/& E&J . Maybe the couple in their 30's were Production or BJT  ???
(IMDB) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489412/board/flat/38288318)

Turt
i love the hipies and i know most of u do to but i work at a shoe shop were the pit stop was in australia in fremantle and i saw four teams run to the old jail which is the pit stop and i didnt see the hippies go past

Turt T

“am just going to say that australia is one of the last countries they go to and only four teams were spoted and none of them were the hippies but i know three out of the top four left because they asked me were the jail is and they are ray and yolanda the frat boys, josheph and monica but i couldnt identify the other team”

We may have to accept the fact that BJ and Tyler is not in the top 4 after all.

Turt adds

that is correct there were four teams at freo and only three came up to me in the afternoon but there was apparantley another team that came throuugh in the morning but i dint see them but i asked 2 weeks ago ,to someone i work with what did they look like and they said a couple in there late 30's which means it must be lake and michelle

The ferry schedule from Fremantle to Rottnest Island is below. It takes aprrox. 30 minutes to cross. All teams should depart Fremantle together and arrive on the island around 8 a.m. If a team can rent their bike, pedal to the lighthouse to get a clue, complete a detour (snorkel or ?) and return to the ferry by 10:30 a.m. they could have a huge lead on teams since the next ferry doesn't leave until 4 hours later! Perhaps they have more to do on the island to prevent any team from finishing that early? Having to wait for the 2:30 ferry would explain why they have time to sit and have lunch at the tearoom.

Depart Fremantle
7:30a.m, 9:30a.m., 11:30a.m., 3:30p.m.

Depart Rottnest Island
8:15a.m., 10:30a.m., 2:30p.m., 4:00p.m., 4:30p.m.

Yea, the one day does not change things significantly.  It looks like they get that 8:15 ferry.  Because they are running and look like they think they have a chance.

And this could explain why the shoe salesperson did not see BJ&T.

From Puddin's Spoiler compendium:  In reference to November 23rd early morning arrivals on Rottnest.

Quote
Word has it the contestants began arriving at 3am with instructions to go to the top of the main lighthouse for their next clue.

That 3a.m. thing was bugging me. In another forum a local from Australia was fussing that the writer of that article is know for flubbing things up and that you can't get to the island  at 3.m. (ferries don't arrive until early morning). I guess TPTB could have chartered their own but we do have shots of Fran and Berry getting a room for the night in Fremantle (night of the 22nd).

About the ferry schedule -- that was the Rottnest Express company schedule that I posted. There are other ferry services and one I've found leaves the island at 9:15 a.m. I don't suppose they would have to take the same ferry company back?

IF they don't arrive until 8 a.m. then this ferry would be much more likely for the hippies to catch.

thats where the title comes from ' Do you Know how much Running I Did today, Phil? ' , based on Chateau's time estimates ..I call BJT for the title . Imagine doing all that hard work only to have Phil hand you another clue ......

Puddin, I get the impression that they are on foot. When they arrive back to Fremantle from the ferry they are less than 1 mile from the prison.

Turt states that the shoe store is the pitstop too????  I think he was just saying that Fremantle (in general) is the pitstop although it's possible that the prison is -- after the roadblock is complete.

Is there any way to get back with him to find out at what times he saw the teams and in which order?

ETA: Reading back - duh they are on foot --- I meant they don't have cars.

Just throwing this out there. Round House is a landmark in Fremantle about 1/4 mile from the ferry landing. It could be a place to grab a clue. The street shot was taken from Round House looking towards the Town Hall (which you can see in the distance).

That's an interesting photo. Several buildings in my hometown are new (or rebuilt) but support a facade to maintain that "old town" look. Speaking of which...
The area FrankenBarry was wandering around (at night) had that look about it. A possible scenario: the route card tells them to take the ferry, but the early-morning arrival leaves the teams bunched; FrankenBarry wander the streets of Old Town looking for a place to crash for a few hours before the first ferry and instead wind up in the company of gay male escorts.

A FIERCE RIVALRY BETWEEN TWO TEAMS STARTS TO HEAT UP WHILE RACING THROUGH AUSTRALIA, ON "THE AMAZING RACE 9," ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT

"Do You Know How Much Running I Did Today, Phil?" --
A fierce rivalry between two teams starts to heat up when one duo tells the other that at the next opportunity to use the Yield, they will use it against them, on THE AMAZING RACE 9, Wednesday, April 26 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Teams travel to Australia and must ride a bicycle built for two in order to receive their next clue.
However, what should have been a fun three-mile bike ride turns into a heated argument for one team.
Meanwhile, on the drive to the airport, another team picks up a hitchhiker and takes some time to conduct international relations.

three-mile bike ride
If the spoiler is true, the only lighthouse they could be riding towards is at Wadjemup hill (http://www.lighthouse.net.au/liGhTS/WA/Rottnest Main/Rottnest Main.htm). Three miles seems a stretch, considering the caps show what looks like the inland route, but you never know.
Also, here's a confirming shot of Thompson bay (ferry) jetty (source (http://www.maths.uwa.edu.au/~adrian/scuba/pix/Nikon/Img0090/Webdscn7188.jpg)). The hippies do appear to be running to catch a boat so maybe they finished their tasks very early.

It looks like you're on the right track. The snorkel spot is sandy on one end, rocky on the other. They go into the water with only gloves, and come out holding...something, I can't see it clearly. Another find-it task? Maybe it's a bay around the cluebox (Wadjemup) somewhere. Still no idea on the other half of the Detour (it is a Detour, right?).

huh?   Last eppy shows had they never had that advantage for three legs they prolly would have faced elimination.  These two are not good racers at all.  You can tell who are good racers when they are all against each other, BJT messed up both legs, and EJ prolly would have messed up on both had they not had the FF. The Hippies were also 6th to the detour in Russia [behind DD and WD] but got lucky.

The best teams are teams that had to fight to stay in the game [MOJO, Ray Yolanda, Fran and Barry] team who had competition and still stayed in and did good.

Following Ray and Yolanda and getting lucky, and somehow going to a closed window that opens first does not qualify you as a good racer at all in my book.

But dont worry there will be plenty of bunching for the Hippies, the same way the last minute change what temple they went to, the closed window opens first.  Had there only been bunching for some of the fun interesting teams this season would have been better[Lisa and Joni, Dave and Lori, Wanda and Desiree, Double Dees].  Not the not so funny but have gotten annoying Hippies. the cocky frats, and the annoying fighting couples.

I find it funny how this season was going to be filled with fun loveable teams, and now i beleive a producer said this is when the race become cutthroat.  Thats total opposite!!!

Sorry for the tardy response, had to run off to town for a minute. Looking at your other Yo pics, Yolanda appears to have a yellow vest on...you do excellent work btw and your spoiler reputation is legendary on the "internets."... :yourock:

I've been looking for the exact beach the teams are snorkeling at. It's really hard to tell from pics. There are a couple of beaches that they could run to from the lighthouse like The Basin and Longreach but I don't see the lighthouse in any vid caps (could just be the camera angle though). Some things to consider:

Teams have to change so I would think the beach would be very close to restrooms (see map -- sorry so big).
I can't capture the shot but at one point when MoJo are on a bike they have water (lake water) on both sides of the road.
If they are heading to the lighthouse they are lost. If they stay on bikes the entire time on the island then they may have already picked up the clue and are heading to the snorkel beach.

I was looking at the wrong lighthouse. Looking at the map again, Mary's Cove looks like a good choice but I can't find any good pics of it -- and MoJo wouldn't be lost going between the two lakes.
Is it happy hour yet? :keeta:

ETA: Chateau, if this is the location of MoJo riding between two lakes (see Puddins second large pic above), could you estimate the time?

So this shot is the road that goes to Waderup lighthouse.

Times coming up for the MoJo shot!

Wait, I don't have any good shadows in that shot.  Is there another frame that is a little later or earlier.  It needs a bike shadow on the pavement.

Chateau, I don't have a better shadow picture - maybe Puddin can capture one. I thought maybe you could do that spherical thingy with Jo's helmet like you did in Oman with Mo's left breast (unless that wasn't the real reason you were looking!) :lol3:

I think the hilly section of the road up to the lighthouse is the final stretch which goes from south to north (see Puddins pic, reply #56)

We have had bunching of some form in every epi

1.  Of course is how they perform with complete Bunching.
2.  How fast the perform (the tasks).  When we have spaced bunching (like in the 4th episode we had 2 different groups bunched with a different starting time.  You can still judge them by how fast they completed their events within each bunching group).

And in both regards the Frats have done consistently better then any team.

I think I will gather my info and either find a thread or start a thread about speed of the various teams at both events and overall.

I'm picking RaYolanda if its an elim , F&B still safe since we see no airplane jumping/diving this leg . E&J are athletic and should have an easy time with the scuba /detour as well as MoJo . Don't know what the other detour is but RaYolanda might opt out of the scuba /detour because we know shes a poor swimmer .
Might be the scuba/detour is the fast choice this time with some luck finding whatever it is in the water .
No matter I think the male teams pull ahead and RaYolandas story was told last week and its over for them .

That and mentions of being friends with by Dave and Lori (when no teams are friends with then) hint to me that they shared some brief time in seqesterville together.

I think Ray and Yolanda are the tetam in trouble.

Me too puddin. They got the arguing "kiss of death" edit last week and I'm worried they are doing the same this week for MoJo.
If we don't see any signs of skydiving for the following week I'm guessing the skydiving will be the FF task and F&B wins it. I've got a couple of websites for skydiving in Darwin waiting.

I think Desperado is right about Fran in the tunnel. :gj: The person is wearing a red vest and Yolanda is in yellow. It "appears" to be a woman. Of course, we all thought Tyler was a woman before the race started.

I have mixed feelings about being right about Fran. I'm glad that she may be doing the roadblock but would prefer that they took the FF, as some have hinted,  if it was available to them in this leg as opposed to one of the legs closer to the finish line. Also in the pic where Joseph appears to go ballistic they are shown off their bike and I'm thinking that maybe Mo convinced him that they were indeed headed in the wrong direction and they dismounted to turn it around. It appears that a two-person bike would be difficult to turn around at that location.

mswood, I think the boys are safe next eppy with the snorkeling and the bike ride if all teams are participating in all of the challenges.  I also think RaYo may be appearing on the Early Show Thursday though something tells me that MOJO is also flirting with disaster.

Ill give the Frats 2 good first place [Munich and FF].  Leg one they follwed BJT [they just say follow that cab] and then just pass them last minute, in Russia they did the same thing with DD, and Ray and Yolanda and passed both teams when they got them to the clue box.  And honestly i will say the DD would not have left the bag had they not been rushing to catch up to EJ, they would have done better had they gotten to go first when they should have. Then in italy they got directions from BJT and just left tem in the dust.  In Brotas they said they were just going to follow they didnt even help with directions.  And the first italy leg they made quite a few mistakes and had it not been for their lead i am sure they wouldnt have placed second that leg.

They just follow and i dont think thats good racing and i dont think it should be rewarded.

Teams like KJ, CC, RB, FM, RA [all who were the top 5 overall teams so far] i dont remember them ever just following to get ahead tehy did their own work, and did it themselves because they were good racers.

And i think of bunching as everyteam catch up, and Munich, Segesta, Siacusa all did not have that bunching. Ill go out on a limb and say had there been bunching the DD and prolly DL too would have at least still been in the race [also had they not been yilded i am confidant saying they would still be in]

Anywany back on this episode i have no clue whats going on i really dont c afre who gets eliminated as long its no Fran and Barry.

But the comments i have been getting overall is that this season sucks.  Ratings are down for a reason, and there prolly wont be any emmy after this season.  Congrats American Idol, or Survivor. I know at least 10 people who have been fans since season one who have stoped watching this season.

THEY NEED A ALL STAR NEXT SEASON TO SAVE THE SHOW, IF THEY HAVE A REGUALR SEASON THE SHOW WILL BE DEAD! THEY NEED TO BRING ROB AND AMBER BACK, AND JON AND VICTORA TO HAVE SOME ENTERTAINMENT.

Actually in a thread I started (Ranking of Route completion), I have broken down all the legs so far, with how fast each team as completed the leg in relation to the other teams.  I have removed any time leads from equilizers and give direct (with two exceptions so far) comparisons of how long it took each team to finish each legs tasks.  For example.  On the first leg, we know when each team member arrived in Brazil.  We also know when they checked in.  And since their were no other equilizers on this leg we know how long it took each team to complete the leg.  Eric and Jeremy who won the leg where the 4th fastest team to complete the leg.  While Dani and Danielle finished the leg in 9th place, but actually took longer then all but John and Scott in that episode.  The double D's best performance time wise was on the 2cd leg (also Dave and Lori's best leg as well).  The time it took them from the getting on to the bus to getting to the Mat put them dead even with 4 teams faster and four teams slower (the fastest time was for Dave and Lori on that leg).  And that was both teams best performance in the race.

I will also be giving some more in depth coverage on Self Navigation, getting Lost (all teams have so far), Followers and leaders (so far everyone has followed at least once), and just generally decision making.

And based on  this so far, the Frats have run the best race.  They have made a few mistakes (every team as, some quite a few), Sure they have been lucky, they have also had bad luck.  They have followed teams before (they don't follow the most though, and every team is guilty of this).  With complete Equilizers they have the best history of completing tasks and being in first.  Without the equilizers they are still finishing the legs consistently faster then any of the other teams.

Doesn't mean that they are going to last much longer.  At this stage any error on any one leg can be enough to eliminate you.

So no FF for them this leg. It appears that MoJo and EJ will be the only teams snorkeling and they appear to be diving at the same time yet MoJo are all by themselves on the tandem bike. ??????

I think the key is to let them out or their team member in.

It reminds me of the detour in Season 7 with the Castle.  One team member waited by a lock gate, teh other scaled the castle retrieved the key and then went and let the other player in or through part of the prison.

We have Joseph outside a cell waiting It doesn't look like he preforms this one (And I do believe we have footage of Monica).

That may be it mswood. They have to go find the key that will allow them to "spring" their teamate who is being "held" in one of the prison cells, hence The Great Escape.

but then whats the roadblock ?
I only see one from each team in the prison but two doing the dive detour MoJo/ Eric & Jeremy
and Joseph sure looks like hes holding a red ticket , I think they have to break themselves out of the prison through a series of finding the clues i.e. the key .

If Chateau is correct about the 8:18 am - 9:01am time for BJ and TYler then Boingo must be mistaken about BJ and TYler leaving Rottnest at that time. The 1st ferry only arrives at the island at 8:00am.

If Fran and Barry were observed walking around in Fremantle between 1:09 and 1:18 pm it means that they got the 10:30 am ferry back to the mainland. According to Turt one team came through earlier than the other teams - could it be Fran And Barry who came through 4 hours earlier than the other 3 teams ? (difference between 10:30 and 2:30pm ferries). Could it be that BJ and Tyler were also on the 10:30 am ferry but weren't noticed? ???

If we assume that Boingo is correct and that Chataeu was mistaken then the critical question is - was the BJ and Tyler photo taken before or after 10:30 am?

Post by: Boingo on April 23, 2006, 09:32:09 AM
FWIW, Boingo never predicted a time for the photo.  He just posted the photo saying it was BJ&T running (on the jetty) towards the ferry on Rottnest Island.  Others have attributed the time of day through mystical calculations.  :snicker:  Boingo is not able to divine such information from mere shadows.   ;D

I love talking about myself in the third person.  :lol3:

15:10 hrs.
11:55pm   5:25pm+1    LX 0243 / EK 0420       DXB 1:40 hrs.   13:30 hrs.
11:55pm   5:25pm+1    WY 5243* / EK 0420    DXB 1:40 hrs.   13:30 hrs.

8:15a.m., 10:30a.m., 2:30p.m., 4:00p.m., 4:30p.m.

fran and barry get eliminated in perth.

the reason to that is because it is relly hard to get a taxi around perth and you normally have to ring up for one and fran and bary do not attempt to do that they just go around the streets looking for one which makes them fall behind.
and i do know some places they go to the, old prison, rottnest, the bell tower and the harbour.
the old prison is in fremantle
rottnest is a island 18 km from fremantle harbour
and the harbour is 2.5 km from the prison which have faries going to rottnest every 2 hours.
bell tower is situated in the city of perth
rottnest have many activities they will probally do for the detour such as there is a bike riding tours where you ride around the island on a bike riding path which is about a 10 km ride and the other detour would probally be the golfing challenge which is a driving range a bit like season 7 finale.
the pitstop will either be the old historicall prison or the rottnest lodge which is one of the best hotels in western australia

Could be the pitstop? just spec .

 The Swan Bell Tower   (http://lifeonperth.com/swanbelltower.htm)
There are six floors in the Swan Bell Tower, the top being the observation deck which overlooks the Swan River and the city. The tower is surrounded by an artificial lake with water features. The footpath from Barrack Street is directly adjacent to the water feature.
The Swan Bell Tower, one of Perth's main tourist attractions, is 82.5 metres tall and contains the 12 bells of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church in London. They were originally cast in the 14th century, and then recast in the 16th century by Elizabeth I. The Swan Bell Tower is situated on the Barrack Street Jetty, overlooking the Swan River and is a major landmark on the city skyline.

I estimate that Fran and Barry arrived at the pit stop at about just before sunset time which would be around 4:30PM; if they only have to rest for 12 hours, they would or might or could make the Oman Air flight no. 607 which leaves Muscat at 6:30AM and conncects in Dubai and arrives in Perth at 12:15AM! the next morning (November 22)  If the other teams can't fly out of Muscat until the early evening (what do they do all day?) and arrive in Perth not until 5:35PM the next day (November 22), the Old Timers would be almost 17 hours ahead of the bunch.  Maybe this is why we don't see much of them in the previews!!

Tyler has an iron key to a jail cell; Jo is holding the red roadblock clue in the same location.  So it looks like the Roadblock is to locate a certain jail cell and open it. (Shades of China and the locks on the fence!!)  Question: does "the find the jail cell" come before or after the trip through the tunnels under the prison in Fremantel??

I thought one of the activites Fran and Barry managed was a Sky diving.  If this is correct, then how can Fran and Barry be eliminated this leg.

Ohhhhhh! The hairs are standing up on the back of my neck. I'm so excited.  I believe I found the building shown in the preview vidcaps.  :jumpy:

It's the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce Building, 16 Phillimore Street.

Guide to pictures shown below:
1) Vidcap of buildings
2) Drawing of Fremantle Chamber of Commerce building @ 16 Phillimore St.
3) Photo of Chamber building detail.
4) Building next door (14 Phillimore St.) and other buildings that match vidcap.

I believe you can just make out the "Chamber of Commerce" lettering on the building in the vidcap.

"all of the teams" could mean three or four with one still trying to get on.  Not sure that FranBerry could even make the 6:30AM flight from Muscat since they would have to drive about 125 miles from Nizwa.  But if they did arrive earlier at the pit stop, say around 4:00PM, then  they probably could.

If teams arrive in Perth than travel to Fremantel, would they be looking for a place to sleep that early in the evening?  If a team arrived at 1215AM then they probably would be looking for a place to sleep when they arrived.

Just throwing out ideas.

What would keep the teams busy in Oman if they have to wait until early evening before flying to Perth?

There is also the possability of a route marker before getting on the flight to Australia.  IF so that would certainly add a little pit of time and make it even more unlikely that Fran and Barry were able to leave before everyone else.

Its  36 hour pit stop.  If you noticed all teams had interviews in the daylight when they all arrived during the day.  So interviews were done the  next day.  had it been a 12 hour stop they would have done them all at night.

mcalpine, if it helps those ferry times were only for the Rottnest Express. I since posted that there are other ferry companies that travel back and forth to the island. I don't think teams would necessariy have to use the same company both ways. I found a 9:15 ferry which is the one I think BJ & Tyler are running to catch in the vid cap (it would be docked when they ran up). That same company also has one at 10:45 and 12:30.

We know that F&B are staying somewhere near the C of C on Phillimore St.  In the vidcap we see them entering a side door.  I believe that the door is on the side of the Old Firestation Youth Hostel, 18 Phillimore St, next to the C of C.  Accross the street is a distinctive building which I believe is His Majesty's Hotel on the corner of Mouat & Phillimore.

Building architecture matches both youth hostel & Hotel.

Edited to add: Just found additonal photo of C of C as viewed from His Majesty's Hotel (see 4th photo below).  So F&B are standing somewhere between the C of C building and Old Firestation Hostel.

Added additional Google Earth image of where F&B are standing.  Note small building behind Old Firestation Hostel.  Perhaps that's where the Pleasure Dome room is.

I don't think the 21 on the door is an address: 21 phillimore is the P & O building (http://www.fremantle.wa.gov.au/gettingaround/html/tours_west.cfm). It might be just a room number. Here (http://www.old-firestation.net/13877.htm) is the Old Firestation page. They might answer if asked, but we'll know in a couple of days anyway.

Last but not least, I heard that one of the teams was fined about $200 for trying to bring food into Australia and a second team had some trouble with Customs/Immigrations by pushing to the front of the queue. None of this is confirmed and I doubt they would be allowed to show any footage of the teams clearing Customs & Immigrations.

All of the teams on the plane could be either three or four with one still trying to get on.  But, if there is some kind of task to do in Oman before they leave, then all five teams may all be trying to get on the same late evening plane leaving at 8:40PM.  They then would be landing in Perth at 5:25PM the next day.  But how long would it then take them to get to Fremantel?  We see Fran and Barry at least entering the hotel/youth hostle when it is probably late and dark, so it has to be after sunset at 7:00PM.  Probably went to the ferry dock first and found out that the first ferry did not leave until 7:30AM. But unless the teams were held up for a lengthy period of time at the Perth Airport (customs, immigaration - by the way you do NEED a VISA for entry into Australia!!) it wouldn't take them an hour an a half for a taxi ride to the Ferry Teminal for Rottnest Island.

Given the spoiler sighting that slowhatch posted previously, sounds like they lose some time going to Kings Park War Memorial for their first clue.  That and probably a slow customs agent (heard some rumors of racers being fined) could account for the the late time.  Remember, they are flying in from OMAN , so the flight will get a good looking over by immigration.

No problem Puddin.  Suffice it to say that it is pretty early in their shot.  I'll see about an estimate of solar altitude later on.  One good thing about that shot is it looks like the cameraman has the sun almost directly behind him.  That cuts down on the trig errors that I never bother to fully correct for.  Maybe Banzai's program will work it out  Envious here!

I may have missed this, but where does the ferry land in Rottnest Island?  And if they pick up the bicycles-built-for-two at the ferry landing, how far is it to the lighthouse?

The shot of one team coming up the hilly road sure matches the shot from the lighthouse.  Looks like they have to push the bikes up the last part in order to reach the clue box.

Clue here probably sends them off to the DETOUR.  One task looks like DIVE.  The other task may have to do with moving brush to clear an area or something which is what we see Tyler doing.  He doesn't look like he is covering his tracks - notice all the tracks above him.  So maybe it is DRIVE.

Looks like Tyler and Monica are doing the ROADBLOCK (That's Joseph holding the red Roadblock clue, and he calls out some more advice to Mo who is off trying to fit the key into the lock.)

Looks like Jeremy going first down the ladder into the tunnels and then later climbing up again in the same place.  Strange. The person has on a similar gray shirt as JO but the sleeves are shorter and lack the dark band around the end of the sleeve. Is this by chance a two-part Roadblock?  Or does going through the tunnels lead to the clue about the key to a certain cell which is the Roadblock task?

I know, I know it is Monday night and a lot of questions.

The ferry lands at the Thompson Bay jetty. Here (http://www.rottnestisland.com/NR/rdonlyres/6A7DC74E-348D-4451-AAC9-24FF36F17ABC/0/ThomsonBaysettlement.pdf) is a pdf map of the settlement (105kb). It's a short walk from the jetty to the Tearooms or the Bike hire. The inland route (Digby Drive) to the lighthouse is 3 miles (according to CBS).

Puddin, do you have the link to the Woodside spoiler? I don't know if they're connected (or even how accurate the spoilers are), but the war memorial is less than a mile from Woodside tower (kmz files attached).
:groan:  It's buried around here somewhere

START: Perth/Rottnest, Australia (November 23, 2005)
Sighting in Perth/Rottnest ON these dates at Woodside building, Fremantle prison, lunch stop

They have already been.

They were over late last year. I had a friend who was over for business and he saw them filming in Fremantle. He was staying at the Esplanade Hotel, and so was the host and crew.

I have done some thinking about the ferries.  There appears to be 2 ferry services. The Express which leaves the mainland at 7:30am and have return trips at 8:15am, 10:30 am, 2:30 pm, 4:00 pm and 4:30 pm. The cost per return ticket is US$38.  The other service is Hillary Fast Ferries - they leave the mainland at 8:30am and return at 9:30am, 11:30 am and 4:30 pm. the cost per return ticket is US$50.

I have a few quetions for us to ponder on:

All tickets are return tickets. So if a team wants to come back on a different ferry service do they have to buy a completely new set of tickets? If so, the cost of these tickets could force teams to come back on the same ferry service - most likely the Express - especially after spending money to stay somewhere for the night.

Could BJ and Tyler been so successful in their begging that they had enough money to buy extra tickets for the return trip? From Turt's observations one team had quite a lead over the other teams. How did BJ and Tyler build up such  lead over all teams in just a bicycle ride and a detour task? They must have been succesfull  getting onto a ferry where the other teams couldn't. I think BJ and Tyler got on on the 9:30am Hillary ferryor 10:30am Express, Franberry on the 10:30am Express and the remaining teams on the 2:30pm Express.

mcalpine, the other ferry service I was referring to was Oceanic Cruise (http://www.oceaniccruises.com.au/rottnest.htm). This schedule is from Dec 2005-April but may be the same. That is where I got the 9:15 and 12:30 return times. If teams hop on a Hillarys ferry they are in trouble. Hillarys Fast Ferries does NOT return to Fremantle but to Hillarys harbour north of Perth.

As far as return price for ferry tickets, who knows? I could easily see teams bargaining with a ferry operator to let them ride either on a return ticket for a diff. company or for free -- anything is possible when you are toting around a camera crew.

ETA: TPTB probably had pre-arranged with both ferry companies for teams to take either back. The times between departures on the Express, 10:30-2:30 in particular is way too far apart. Oceanic has a 12:30 which would fit in between. And we don't know if the ferries ran completely different schedules for TAR -- stranger things have happend!  ???

This doesn't really  belong here, but this here is where the action is!!

In Phil's Blog for Ep7 (just posted on the CBS website) he does not mention a trip to Rome or the Da Vinci clue.  He says they went right from Siracusa directly to Athens Greece!.  Also they never mention Rome in the lead in for Ep8.  Wha' Happen?

Could all of that been added afterwards?

dont read this because i know who gets eliminated and what the chalenges are and where the pitstop is.

i know this information because i live in perth and i followed them around to see what they were doing because i am a huge fan of the amazing race and because next episode is in perth for u americans u guys probely cant wait for it so i will to you the insider now

destinations=

.airport
.kingspark
.fremantle harbour
.rottnest island
.fremantle jail

they come from oman to perth leave the airport go get there next clue at kings park which is one of the biggest parks in austrlia and tells them to travel to the fremantle harbour and when teams get there they have to buy a ticket for the fairy which leves every two hours to rotnesst island which is located 18 km from fremantle harbour and when teams get to the island go to the tourist burea and find the clue box.

when they are at rottnest there will be a detour hit it or bike it. in hit teams probely just have to hit a golf ball into a circle just like season 7 and in bike it they have to ride around rottnest which is called rottnest bike tours which is about 5 km.

after teams have completed it catch a fairy back to fremantle and find the old historicall fremantle jail where the will find there next clue.

there is a roadblock in the old tunnels under the jail i dont know what the road block is but when completed they have to run up the stairs to the old cells which is like a round house which is the pit stop for this leg of the race

i am very sure that fran and barry get eliminated because they have trouble fiding taxi in perth because there arent really many around in western australia

Would a person need to get a taxi to go from the harbour to the prison? Barry and Fran were observed wandering around in Fremantle and not Perth at about 1 pm and would not need a taxi.

Maybe teams ran from the harbour to the jail - hence the title of the episode. Turt himself observed that teams ran towards the prison. They did not arrive in taxis.

Lots of holes in TurT's "insider"

Nothing about scuba diving and retreaving something off the ocean floor.

Bike it or hit it.  Is not a Detour since we have MO/JO both swimming and biking and no one hitting golf ball.

Roadblock has something to do with a key and finding the right cell; not just running to the pit stop.

Biking seems to have a definite end place (the lighthouse) not just a 5km ride around the island.  Seems to me that all teams have to bike it to the lighthouse, and then go on to the Detour:  sink or swim? dive or drag?

Question:  how far is the Fremantle Jail from the ferry jetty? Walkable, runable or cabable?
Title: Re: EP9 Title:Do you Know how much Running I Did today, Phil?
Post by: mswood on April 25, 2006, 02:24:56 PM
Well, lets see there are photos of Jospeh and Monica, BJ and Tyler (saw a very clear photo on another site of them on bikes), Ray and Yolanda, and Fran and Barry on bikes.  Know I think we also have a shot of Eric and Jeremy on a bike.

If so then biking isn't just a detour.

Know we have the diving part where we see Eric and Jeremy (Hot), Mojo for sure diving.  I will go back and check more phot's to see what other teams we have for sure diving.

We have that damn photo of Tyler dragging bushes.

Now of course his discription of the roadblock could be correct since he doesn't give much info, just something to do with the prison and that it leads to the Pit Stop (I even felt this was most likely the case).

And it is possible that all the teams do have to bike it to a route marker.  And that route marker might be for the detour.

And it is possible that Fran and Barry are eliminated (I would be surprised, but I would love it), because they do sometimes just meander around looking for places or a cab (that's not something they excel at).

As for the spoiler that they sky dive.  It is possible that they mixed info on some of they things they have already done in life (which is quite a bit, and they gets props from me for that).

Click on the Google maps link. It looks like the prison is about 1 km or so from the harbour. No need for taxi's.

do you think Fran would consider bungee jumping the same as skydiving?  And from what I've seen in the spoilers for the other episodes, I don't see any skydiving.  There are several places in Perth to sky dive.  Any reason to think she did sky dive in Perth???  If not, when do you think they will do that task?  Possible a fast forward.

Thanks!

It depends on who could pedal the fastest to the clue box at the lighthouse without getting lost , since it looks like BJT take the other detour unknowntreedragging option , and MoJo go the wrong way to the lighhouse , if I had to guess I'd say its Eric & Jeremy first to the scuba/detour .

also BJ is a ladies man , in Brazil he pulled some girl over and madeout with her untill the Scale the Building place opened ;) but really it could be E&J ?

I think we have had the spoiler about the sky diving for so long that I just can't really except it as a reporting error nor can I see Fran and Barry gone this week (even If I would like it).

Still see Ray and Yolanda being gone , just because out of the other three teams I want all of them in the final three.
Title: Re: EP9 Title:Do you Know how much Running I Did today, Phil?
Post by: gingerman28 on April 25, 2006, 07:55:24 PM
here's a puzzlement:

We have an estimated time of between 9:04 and 9:19 for the biking couple coming up toward the lighthouse on the hilly road (Ray and Yolanda>???) but if the lighthouse is only 3 miles or less from the ferry landing in Thompson Bay what happened? If all the teams got on the early 7:30AM ferry they all would have arrived at Thompson's Bay at the same time, about 8:00AM. So this team must have gone the wrong way somewhere.  Perhaps they went off to the right to the other lighthouse first and then had to retreat back to find Digby Lane and the raod to the Wadjemup Hill Lighthouse.  And, teams do get stretched out since we have no shots of more than one biking team in the same picture.

Checked up on the Round House.  It can't be the location for the jail cell search since it has only 8 cells on one floor!  But it has historical significance since it was built by convicts in 1830 and is tahe oldest public building in the state.  So it very well may be the pit stop for this leg of the race.

Yeah, great match on the building.

But I wonder what the hell has got Barry so frustrated.  By all the info everything is realtively close together this leg (one of htose legs that the ability to get the task done is going to really matter.

I still don't believe the Turt (?).  But wouldn't it be funny in a sad little way if Fran and Barry did try and get a cab.  Then find out 15 or minutes later that they are just blocks away from where they need to go.

Or is that just to mean.

visually they look very far apart but I could see where they would miss the turn to the wadjemup and then maybe realize they are going to the wrong lighthouse .

Quick guess....4-5 Km apart.  Going to the wrong light house would add add about 2 Km (there and back from the dock).  However, taking a "short cut" from the other light house or taking a wrong turn could add a bunch of Kilometers....

As an aside, I noticed a youth hostel on the island.  Could BJT have made the last ferry the night before, stayed on the island, and gotten an early start on the tasks?  That would help explain about them running towards a ferry early in the morning....I hope!

Well at least one team has to go from first to last [its happened every real season Family doesnt count]
I would hate to see FB go for me they are the only team left i would like to root for.

If the jail from the IMBD spoiler the same one as this one?  If BJT werent seen they could then be possibly ahead then MOJO, Rayolanda, and Frats come in realitivily close ats 2nd-3rd, and Fran and Barry come later and are eliminated [even though i would have liked the second Aussie leg to be the elimination cause i would hate for Tokyo to be a non elim with the final three what a bummer!]
Now i dont remember the spoiler to well but wasnt it also later said it was a couple middle aged [assumed Lake and Michelle but that wrong] now i dont know if they were early or later but that could have been FB also not reaching the pit stop with the other teams, and based on the looks of it its not good.

Actually I want Japan to be a non elimination round.

Frankly I don't mind it when a contestant is familar with the language and the locals, except the closer it gets to the ending.

Just lke I wouldn't want the one of the final legs be in the Arican Country that Jeremy lived in for a while.

So with Tyler familar with Japan and its language, I don't want to see it be an elimation round.  Of course with the luck on the amazing race is if its someplace you are familar with you screw it up.

And Puddin, don't you ever sleep.

I to am crossing all digits for an early peak at the preview for next week.  Otherwise its just me on the west coast, reading spoilers from the east coast feed.

I tell you the show is like crack.

We have a confusing situation this morning.  On TES they had four promos for TES tomorrow ALL featured RobinWilliams and plug for his new film "RV" and not one single word about TAR team being on tomorrow morning.  At the end of the program, Harry Smith (who I do not think is the brightest lighthouse on the island) says the following:  "and back to The Amazing Race. Very excited tonight (giggles, giggles, small talk by the others) ....it's not an elimination round. (more background giggles, etc.) ...I'm pulling for the Hippies.we'll find out who is eliminated and they will be around tomorrow

Good question Puddin!  :jumpy: I just took a quick peek at Tarflies gallery and the last we've seen him wearing the MoJo shirt was at Segesta.

UPDATE!

In promo on CBS at noon  today, for TES tomorrow after another plug for Robin Williams, TAR IS MENTIONED AND THAT THE LATEST CASTOFF WOULD BE ON THE EARLY SHOW TO TELL US WHAT WENT WRONG, etc, etc.

SO IT IS AN ELIMINATION LEG TONIGHT and who will be Philiminated?

Strange thing about the promo is that they included a closeup shot of a Parrot and then rugged mountians with three white SUV's driving through a narrow pass, then pan to a wide open valley with railroad tracks and small villages.  Do no recognize any of the shots; perhaps Darwin area. Or something left over from Oman.  Just strange, that's all!

I wish I saw that Gman ...could be Oman or maybe even Darwin?

early show site ( play orange box on the left ), watch coming up, Julie & Renee do not mention the racers .... ???

Damn, I knew I knew those scenes on the TES promo:  they were from the introduction of the very first ep for TAR9!! Why would they pick up on those old mountain shots instead of something more recent featuring teams racing like they have in the past?  Me thinks that something strange is going on.  The promo for TAR on TES tomorrow looks like something thrown together at the last moment to run at noon today.  Me thinks that maybe one hand at CBS doesn't know what the other hand is doing (which would not be anything new!)

Hopefully, you can steal an early look at the video promo for Ep 10 this afternoon, Puddin, we're counting on you!

Now it is time to try to summarize, so I will sit down and go through all the notations we have and see what we can see, if anything.

Later, Gator

Checked up on the Round House.  It can't be the location for the jail cell search since it has only 8 cells on one floor!  But it has historical significance since it was built by convicts in 1830 and is tahe oldest public building in the state.  So it very well may be the pit stop for this leg of the race.

Is this the same Round House that I posted back on page 3? Turks comment about the Round House sounded like it was something inside of the prison but the Round House landmark is about a mile away. The shot looking down the street was taken from the Round House and you can see the Town Hall down on the right. If thats the case then it is possible that Barry is trying to run to the Round House for the pitstop instead of to the prison as we thought. Click on the google image link for the relationship between the prison, town hall, and round house.

and in the video Barry looks frustrated , the voiceover has what we would believe is Barry saying " is there no easy task " in frustration but the words do not come from his mouth ......could even be Jeremy's voice ?

good deal Sups !! I wish I could get a better look at that ticket /clue that Barry is flipping around , I thought I saw a hint of red ..not conclusive though.

Back in my pub crawling days in Sydney, Australia, the thing you hated to hear was for the barkeep to call out "Gentlemen, time." (It was always gentlement since the ladies were not allowed in the pub but had to partake in the public room adjacent) So I must now take the role of the barkeep and say TIME!

What do we have?

Some ideas and a whole lot of holes.  So here goes.

We start off at the pit stop at the Jarbin Castle, Nizaw, Oman. Teams arrived just as the sun is setting at 5:21PM so we estimate that the teams would arrive and then will leave we think after a much needed 36-hour pit stop:

1. The Old Times         Arrive at 5:00PM        Leave at 5:00AM

2.  MO/JO                  Arrive at 5:30PM        Leave at 5:30AM

3.  RaYolanda             Arrive at 6:15PM        Leave at 6:15AM

4.  BeachBoys             Arrive at 7:00PM        Leave at 7:00AM

5.  Hippies                  Arrive at 8:00PM        Leave at 8:00AM, but first they have to beg for money!!!!

It is 151 miles as the crow flies from Nizwa to Muscat, so we have a lot of time to fill in before we have flights leaving Muscat for Perth.  What do they do (beside chase after the attractive girls?)  So perhaps their first clue will send them back to Muscat and then do some task in Muscat which we have not really seen as teams just went through the airport and then drove to Sur.  This is a usual pattern for TAR, so lets say they have to locate some out of the way place or find some strange business to secure their next clue. (will research Muscat again to see if there is some really unique place for them to go to)This clue will finally tell them to fly from Oman to Perth, Australia and when they land they must make their way to Kings Park to find their next clue

The most obvious flight leaves at 8:40PM and connects through Dubai UAE. Once there they could run into trouble going throgh customs or what not and miss the first connecting flight which would get them to Perth at 5:25PM.  And since the sun does not set until 7:00PM we have some more time to fill until we have the teams in Fremantle looking for a place to sleep and the town around the Chanber of Commerce really looks deserted and would you be looking for a place to sleep early in the evening. If they do arrive at 5:25PM, they may be hung up in customs and immigration for say an hour and a half (which happened in ep 5 when they were going through Rome on the way to Palermno. This all came out in Phil's blog later so it could happen again in Perth, especially since the plane is coming from UAE.)

So it may be, the teams miss the early connecting flight and do not get to Perth until the next flight arrives at 12:15AM. The teams get cabs and go to Kings Park, find the clue envelope which sends them to the Rottnest Ferry in Fremantle and then proceed to the Tourist Bureau in Thompson's Bay for their next clue.  When they get there they find the truely unique BUNCH POINT and learn that the first ferry does not leave until 7:30AM

Teams now look for a place to sleep, the streets are deserted in the early morning, we hear MO saying "where can we find a hotel" (Look next door, sweetheart) The Old Timers find the Old Firestation Youth Hostel.

Come 7:30 all five teams are on the Eagle Express for Rottnest Island.  When they get to the Tourist Bureau the next clue tells them to rent bikes next door and then pedal to the highest point on the island and find the Wadjemup Hill Lighthouse. A biKe ride of about 3 miles and should only take 20 minutes at the most.  We have all five teams on bikes but none seem to be together so somehow everyone is lost or maybe it takes awhile for some teams to master the art of riding "bicylcles built for two"  We are pretty sure that MO/JO head off for the wrong lighthouse and fall almost an hour behind the others.

When the arrive at the Lighthouse (exhausted!) the find their next clue.  DETOUR.  Task one:  DIVE. Proceed to Salmon Point, put on bathing suits and snorkle gear and then swim out into Salmon Bay and proceed to dive and retreave sea life off the ocean floor (one or more of what we do not know).  Task two: DRAG.  Collect a number of dead bushes and drag them to the beach to form a signal fire.  When the fire is burning you will receive your next clue.

We see the Beach Boys and MO/JO (oh, what a wonderful shot of MO, can we have more, please, please?) and we have Tyler and probably BJ dragging dead bushes.  The Old Timers and RaYolanda are missing at the Detour.

After completing the Detour, teams are instructed to bike back to the ferry and return to Fremantle and then locate the old Fremantle Jail.

This may be wishful thinking but can the Hippies complete all this and bike to and from the Salmon Bay location and still make the 9:30AM ferry back to Fremantle????? The timing arrived at by shadow studies seem to say that they did. So they now have gone from pennyless last to first.  The other teams may not even make it back to Thompson's Bay to catch the 10:30AM ferry and therefore all end up in the Tea Room having a sit down (what's that?) lunch served for them. And do not leave until the 2:30PM ferry.

Meanwhile back in Fremantle when the teams arrive and locate the old jail (here we have The Old Timers really lost and frustrated and on the verge of losing it???)  Arriving at the jail they find their next clue the dreaded ROADBLOCK. Who is good at searching and finding??  Search first for a special Iron Key, then find the jail cell that the key opens for the next clue. Tyler, of course, so he gets into protective gear, descends 20 meters down a verticle steel ladder into the tunnels under the jail. He must walk a bit, get into a small canoe and row along an underground river, find the key, then return up the steel ladder into the cell blocks and search among hundreds of old cells for the door that the key will open.

Later we have Yolanda, Jeremy and Mo in the tunnels or trying keys.  The Old Timers are no where to be found.  Tyler is off looking through doors ahead of the crowd,  MO seems to be second and JO is calling out clues to her.

When the teams find the right jail cell, they will get the final clue directing them about one mile to the famous Fremantle landmark, The Round House which built in 1830 was the first jail for convicts being transported to Australia, and is now the oldest public building in the state.  This is the Eighth Pit Stop in a race around the world and the last team to check in here MAY BE ELIMINATED.

First:  The Hippies who without money or baggage go from Last to First.
Second:  MO/JO just miss out on an exotic trip once again
Third: The Beach Boys keeping in the middle of the pack
Fourth and Fifth:  Pick 'em: RaYolanda or The Old Timers.

Time, Gentlemen.

Hippies - Likely winners
E/J - Seen in Alaska
FranBerry - Still have to skydive
Mojo - In Episode 10

That leaves Ray and Yolanda unaccounted for.

That makes a lot of sense, unless Barry was throwing that comment about skydiving in there about something they did after the race, but I don't see Fran skydiving on her own free will.  lol  I'm going with Ray & Yo.

Thanks mcalpine9!

Wow!  They look worn out!  Can anyone get a time on this pic?  About that "scary" looking Fran pic in the tunnel/prison.  I think that is Tyler and not Fran.  See how Tyler rolls his pants up and the watch is the same?  If I knew how to put a pic in here I would, it's on page 1 of this topic.

Everybody's accounted for doing one or more tasks so no FF tonight. (on edit: sorry 'bout this, you asked about a yield)  About this pic, I thought it might be Fran but looking closer it looks like the person is wearing shorts and the watch looks like Eric's. (also, BJ/T no blue sneakers yet.)

Puddin, I'm assuming that MO is doing the Roadblock since JO is holding the clue envelope and red roadblock card and is looking up at the jail cells and calling out to MO who seems to be somewhere above  him.

Here's the ticket for the flight to Perth. It's a little fuzzy, but you can make out the flights (Emirates Air 865-420 combo, connecting through Dubai and arriving at Perth 5:25 p.m.) and the date--22 Nov.

Just reviewed the tape of MoJo leaving Perth Airport, and the clock on the wall by the Avis counter near the cabs said 6:20, as best as I can see.  That means either the flight was delayed or it took about an hour to clear customs/immigration.  No wonder they missed the last ferry to Rottnest.

Also, I thought the taxi driver said it was one and a half hours to get to Fremantle Harbour from the war memorial.  Damn, traffic is a nightmare during rush hour in Perth.

There were a few (like the first one in TAR8 and the second Botswana leg in TAR7) that were timed to allow teams to depart in daylight hours. Not sure about the reason for this though. To make them get stuck with the king?

How do you know how long a pit-stop is? And for you detectives out there, is there any way to determine how late a person arrives at the mat?
I wish that during check-in TAR would show what time they arrive.

That was a strange timing -- maybe they wanted to do 36 but it wouldn't have worked out with flights? Not a ton of planes from Muscat to Perth...

Looks like we were right on with the dates of filming at this point -- leaving Oman on 11/22. From here on out, I am pretty confident of our dates... also, as to someone's earlier post, I think the Woodside building thing was just an onlooker who happened to see them run past the building, not the site for a task.

EPISODE 9 – 4/26/06
START: Oman (November 22, 2005)
FINISH: Perth/Rottnest, Australia (November 24, 2005)
Sighting in Perth/Rottnest ON these dates at Woodside building, Fremantle prison, lunch stop
NEL? 5 teams remaining

EPISODE 10 – 5/3/06
START: Perth/Rottnest, Australia (November 25, 2005)
FINISH: Darwin, Australia (November 26, 2005)
Crocodylus Park
4 teams remaining

EPISODE 11 – 5/10/06
START: Darwin, Australia (November 27, 2005)
FINISH: Lopburi Thailand (via Adelaide, Australia and/or Bangkok) (November 28, 2005)
Dates locked in because of monkey festival dates in Lopburi
Couple spotted in Adelaide trying to get to Bangkok

How do you know how long a pit-stop is? And for you detectives out there, is there any way to determine how late a person arrives at the mat?
I wish that during check-in TAR would show what time they arrive.

When Fran and Barry arrived at the mat in Oman, it was still light outside.  Team 2 arrived in dwindling light.
When Fran and Barry departed Oman, it was still light outside.  Team 2 departed in dwindling light.

charlierose,

I agree that it was lacking something.  But, a lackluster TAR episode beats most other shows.

That 24-hour rest stop had us fooled.  First time for that in the past it was either 12 or 36 hours.  So the late start times (5:35PM) accounts for the missing hours in Oman.

Teams arrived at Perth Airport at 5:20 so they had about an hour taken to get through customs and immigaration (something that even Phil says they never show since teams standing in lines is boring, boring, boring.  And TPTB seem to hold up all teams until the last team is checked through.  This makes sense since you could just get in the wrong, long line and be delayed way behind the first team.  Taxi then to the Kings Park takes them up to just before 7:00PM and we can see that the light is failing and building lights coming on and by the time the teams get to Fremantle it is dark.  Sunset is at 7:01PM.  No way were they going to get to Rottnest this day since the last Eagle Express leaves Fremantle at 4:00PM except on Fridays when there is a 6:00PM ferry.

Something strange, but TPTB have the power.  When the teams are checking in at the Eagle Express ferry terminal, the schedule sign clearly shows that ferries leave Fremantle at:

7:30
9:30
11:30

And then leave from Rottnest Island at:

8:15
10:30
12:15

But when Eric and Jeremy get on the ferry the title says: 9:15AM (No way could they do the tasks and get on the 8:15AM ferry) and when the other teams boarded the title said 10:00AM.  Oh, the power, the power!!

My estimate of pit arrival times:

The Beach Boys  11:30AM to 12:00Noon

MO/JO               11:30AM to 12:00Noon

The Hippies         12:00N   to 12:30PM

RaYolanda             1:00PM  to 1:30PM

Mwooden, I think Episode 9 ended on the 23rd.  They had tickets dated on the 22nd and were bunched up at the 7:30 am ferry on the 23rd.  The leg ended on that day.

Chateau, I think it broke down like this...

Evening of 11/22: Flight from Oman to Perth (21 hour flight)
Evening of 11/23: Arrival in Perth, stay in hostel overnight
Day of 11/24: Complete tasks & pit stop (finishing between 11AM and 1PM)

That flight's a killer!

The ticket (sale date: 21 November 2005) said that the flight left Muscat at 0045 via Dubai (change plane) and arrive in Perth at 1720 (0+) which means the plane arrived on the same day it left Muscat on November 22.

So arrival in Perth is still on November 22 not November 23.

Teams took the 7:30AM feffy on November 23 and completed the day at the Perth Sailing Cub on and after Noon, November 23.

Aha, got it. So we're a day behind on the dates. Might be one more long pit stop to make up for it?

Nope that was fran and Barry with a Chicken sandwich.  Poultry isn't the smartest thing to try and break into another country recently.

from an article (http://www.summitdaily.com/article/20060502/NEWS/105020041) about Fran & Barry

They received a 12-hour rest period after each leg of the race, and two 36-hour rest periods in the 17 days. The longest race leg lasted 42 hours.
