TAR has done desert camps before; if they're going to do it again in Oman, then Wahiba Sands (http://www.nomadicdesertcamp.com/camp.htm) is a possible destination. It's where several tour agencies drop their people off for the Bedouin experience.

Only if the hippies are willing to share.   (they'd better not do it in public, though; ol' Qaboos (http://www.omanet.om/english/oman2004/SULTAN QABOOS.asp) has no sense of humor about that kind of thing  :rules:).

No Antarctica either.  That leaves five continents which is the number that CBS promoed at the beginning along with 60,000 miles.

Phil mentioned in an article there would be a " stop " in Africa ...maybe just a place for airport connections ?of course the writer of the article could have mis-quoted   :snicker:
The top-rated, three-time Emmy-winning CBS show returns Feb. 29, with 11 pairs of contestants on a world trek with stops in Africa and The Middle East. Keoghan says that after past "Amazing Race" installments gave viewers a look at everyday folks in other lands helping travelers, "I was asked by people in e-mails and on the street, 'Were those Muslim people really like that?'

I'm with you, puddin.  We haven't been able to use Emporis (to ID buildings) since, well, since Moscow.   Wonder if we'll be spending any time in Athens, come to think of it.  Gosh darn it!    (:;)

There's one location that we get to in the middle east where the teams are immersed in a daily
task that a lot of people have to go through. It's great to see teams
used to going down to the 7-11 living life in a completely different
way and certainly a way that people overseas have to cope with every
day.

The minaret looks like it's from the corniche at Mutrah (source (http://danielschereck.com/wp2002/uaeoman/wp-mutrah.htm)). The fort (http://community.webshots.com/photo/261464303/1261492172048871983hTnZZx) may be as well, but I'm not ready to call it.

The fortress structure in the previews is most like the Twin Forts: Al-Jalali and Al-Mirani.

Nevermind, it's the Muttrah Fort, like slowhatch said.

If Boingo or anybody else wants to go fort-looking, this page (http://www.pbase.com/bmcmorrow/oman&page=all) might be an OK starting place. Good luck; Oman has a boatload of forts. The street lamps and decorations make it look like a festival is in town; I checked for stuff in Nov 05, but no luck.
The guys in white look like musicians (source (http://www.edwebproject.org/oman-dubai/bustan.html)) (maybe pit stop musicians?).

I think they are trying to get to the Rion-Antirion bridge. They are just having a hard time finding it on foot. The last shot of Yolanda shows her walking on the bridge. The railing of the bridge matches and it does have a pedestrian walkway.

Assuming they rested in Rio, why would they be crossing the Rio-Antirio Bridge, puddin?  This would take them from the Pelopennese to the Greek mainland, but what's in Antirio?  Nafpaktos (http://www.nafpaktos.com/) is a picturesque city, but I suppose they could make the overland trip back to Athens, past Delphi, to get on a plane to Oman.
 :dunno:

Post by: supsandalee on April 13, 2006, 12:46:51 PM
Agreed it seems strange. Maybe they just walk halfway across the bridge to get a clue and walk back????  I checked on some flights to Muscat, Oman and nothing shows from Patras. Perhaps they have to head back to Athens? Flights from Athens are at 3:30 p.m. arriving between 11:15-11:50 p.m. on the 21st on Gulf Air. If they travel on the 20th there is also a flight on Qatar at 3:30 that arrives at 10:30p.m. Regardless, seems like an equalizer which BJ/Tyler are in desperate need of.

So how does that shot of Nafplion harbor fit in???? Maybe it is of Patras?

They probably decided to make a last minute title change. Someone said that's enough giving away the location with the title. Possible original titles for Episode 9:

"What's a Vegemite Sandwich?"
"Blimey Mate That's A Big Croc!"

TEAMS FACE A DIFFICULT DETOUR IN OMAN, WHICH REQUIRES THE RACERS TO GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH SEVERAL ORNERY CAMELS, ON "THE AMAZING RACE 9," WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT

"Here Comes The Bedouin" -- Teams face a difficult Detour in Oman, which requires the racers to get up close and personal with several ornery camels in order to receive their next clue, on THE AMAZING RACE 9, Wednesday, April 19 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Right out of the Pit Stop, one Team erupts into a war of words and insults. Then, Teams encounter a true roadblock on the Race when they come across a flooded road allowing them a chance for a unique interaction with a kind local who comes to their rescue. Meanwhile, a lonely duo entertains themselves by invoking the ghosts of previously eliminated teams, doing hilarious impersonations of each to help pass the time.

I was thinking the flooded road clue might be in Greece but after reading this it could very well be Oman too .

We had some problems guessing what the "Stop If Water Is At Red" signs meant. At first we thought it might be to remind drivers to watch the temperature of their engine cooling water in the hot climate of the Arabian peninsula. Then we become aware that the associated sign with waves crossing an arrow (water crossing a road ?) did not fit our hypothesis very well. Days later we asked our 4WD-driver Ya'qoub and he explained that this sign is followed by poles at the roadside which are painted white close to the ground followed by red higher up. If rainwater floods the road, it is only safe to drive as long as the white color is still visible, which means water is shallow enough to allow a normal car to pass. The power of the rain water should not be underestimated. We could see an impressive demonstration on a photo of a flooded wadi taken by a local photographer in Nizwa. The "Stop If Water Is At Red" sign is very frequent on overland roads in the Sultanate - we passed one of the signs every few kilometres.

Look I see a camel toe! :lol3:  :lol3: :lol3: :lol3:

I would not have associated a flooded road with Oman either, I mean it's the desert. But Vegas is the same way -- when it rains they get flash flooding. Maybe there are some statistics on when and where it flooded in Oman last November.

Meanwhile, a lonely duo entertains themselves by invoking the ghosts of previously eliminated teams, doing hilarious impersonations of each to help pass the time.

This happened when the Weavers were Yielded TAR8 , just saying .

Is this a hint that The Hippies are YIELDED?

Now who would Yield the Hippies  ?

Desert Safari: (http://www.omantourism.gov.om/Topics/Adventure/Land.htm)
The immense desert lanscapes of Oman are welcoming the tourists and locals alike to explore. From the dunes of Sharqiyah (Wahiba) Sands in A'Sharqiya Region to the Omani section of the masive plains of Al-Rub'a Al-Khali (Empty Quarter) in Dhofar; by 4WD or on camels; the choice is yours.

Camel Safari is a new service in Oman. Safaris go Bedouin style, riding and living in the desert properly with your guides and camels as one.

A Bedouin searching for fresh grazing for his camel is an increasingly rare sight in desert areas where four-wheel-drive vehicles are now each family’s main transport. ( image below)

I'm doubting if the riverside shots of Ray/Yolanda are from Mutrah. From Google's pictures, it seems that there's a short seawall all around the harbour, with benches etched into it. The bench designs and colours don't match either. I still see the fort in the background, though, so... I don't know. :(

The camel harbour, however, does look like Muscat.

The camel caravan in the desert shot was used in the TAR7 'Change Your Mind' commercial, so it's not from the upcoming episode.

That's what it sounds like.  And here I was thinking that MoJo had finally claimed the FF, but now it seems as if they're not doing so well.  Of course, that's not to say that there can't be a Yield and a FF on the same leg, especially since it's likel non-elimination and both the Yield and FF are likely to be on a leg where no one's Philiminated.  I wonder if there's a long period where everyone's bunched up on a train or something and this is when they all do their impressions of the eliminated teams.  Anyway, really, this sounds like BJ/Tyler and a Yield.  Eric/Jeremy prob did it because they can no longer get back at Lake/Michelle for the Dani's sake and to stay ahead of the competition.

:jumpy: Nice match Boingo. I found some benches (http://community.webshots.com/photo/176911630/1176917109016039617LHiBNn) which look similar to the background benches in the cap. Sur is a center for boat-building, so maybe a task there involves dhows. There's a coastal road to Sur as this funny sign (http://community.webshots.com/photo/546522624/2545639970059404607jYUfWn) suggests, but the racers might make better time by using the inland road and then cutting back east.

'Amazing Race' scrambles across Utah tonight
Article Last Updated: 11/22/2005

"There will be some prominent landmarks featured," promised the typically secretive Keoghan by cell phone from the set of the show's ninth season, now shooting "somewhere near the Middle East."

We might get a cap with the main intro next week. Personally, I'm hoping for a little frankincense and myrrh (http://arabian-archaeology.com/incense1arabia.htm) action from the race because they'll be in that part of the world. My few searches for Omani daily traditions has turned up only one time-waster: they spend a lot of time making and drinking their coffee. http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php?topic=7174.195

While looking through Sur pictures, I came across pictures of wedding dancers and musicians. It turns out the sticks in the picture are camel canes (here (http://www.alc.edu/denham/FileDir/5Mideast/05d2OmanGraphics/OMNd11WeddingDance.jpg) and here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mahmood/3504357/in/set-87661/)).
Also, I was wrong about the driving. This site (http://www.destinationoman.com/new/destination.html#sur) states the coastal road Muscat>Sur is actually quicker, but that the inland road crosses many wadis (chance for flooding).

Maybe it's another Herculean task.
I'm thinking maybe the old guy (sitting in a boat? standing on the shoreline?) is Sur as well, but I haven't found any matching markers; I see things that look like bridge supports, but no bridge.

Good catch on the watch and time. BUT The Beach Boys have forgot to set their clock AHEAD ONE HOUR when they left Rome for Athens. Athens is one time zone ahead of Central European Time (Rome).  This makes it 11:07 local time which jibes with my estimate of their arrival time.  To wit:  Ancient Agora opens at 8:00AM; they smash plates and find FF at 8:30AM.  Get in car and drive approximate 141 miles to Rion Fortress (near Patra) which should take about two and a half hours.  Thus I estimated that they would have arrived at 11:00AM.

between Muscat and Sur

There are 2 roads between Muscat and Sur, those at the coast and in the interior. One can combine it thus ideally to a round trip. The coastal road was at the beginning of of 2005 however still only for 4x4 passably. A new road was however in the building. The highlight here is the Wadi Shab, s.Bild right. On the other road one can regard the Wadi Bani Khalid and several villages around Ibra.

It's hard to get a time for that shot w/o a better fix on the location.  I can kind of find it in Google Earth but the shore is curved and so I can't fix the orientation of those benches.  Based on Solar altitude I get 39 degrees.  I may be able to get a wide time window from that.

Okay, I'm getting 9:00 am plus or minus 20 min or 12:45 pm plus or minus 20 min.  My choice between the two is for the 12:45 because the earlier time would have a Solar azimuth that is to far east to make those shadow off the benches.

I cant look anymore tonight  :knuckles:

Sur is 350 km from Muscat by the inland road and 150 km by the graded coastal road. The local language is Arabic but the business language is English and widely spoken by Omani's and shopkeepers. The religion is Muslim. sur oman Wadis. Beware rain, flash floods can start high in the mountains far away, be careful of camping in wadi bottoms if in doubt. Don’t try and cross a flooded wadi until others have done so first, the water usually soon subsides. When driving through water in the wadi bottom, stick to visible tracks, if in doubt wade through first

**Sur. A couple of forts, some excellent beaches and an interesting dhow [traditional sailing ship] building yard. 3 or 4 hours from Muscat.

I don't know if it will help, but I'll make an estimate about the benches. Working with the photos Puddin has provided, I think the benches are facing nearly due east. In fact, I think you can see them in one of the photos (arrow; you can see it better in the larger image on pg. 6).

I am thinking that this shot gets taken on the opposite side of the body of water in the Ray & Yolanda bench jumping shot.  Maybe Ray & Yolanda run to a boat before the other four teams and make their crossing solo.  The time of this shot is about the same just by looking at the limb shadow on Monica's left breast.  You can use Barry's bald head too but it is not as spherical and so it gets a different shadow near the top.

Are there caps with better definition? If it is on the other side, then the camera is pointing SW (I think). I've only found one other photo looking the other way (here (http://community.webshots.com/photo/261446712/1261478458048871983UyZmVV), pointing NW). The village of Ayjah is a bedroom community for dhow builders (Indians from Kerala (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/tonywheeler/travel_blogs/oman/sur_to_nizwa/)), who take the ferryboats (http://www.mideasttravelling.net/oman/sur/sur_history.htm) to work every day; you can see the northern end of the dhow yards (and the parking lot) in the pg. 6 photo I mentioned. What the racers would be doing in Ayjah is anybody's guess.

The odds are good they won't track us down Boingo  :bny3:

now if only we could make that darn Navy pop-up disappear  :knuckles: oh ROBbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb !
Teams do some mindless task on Rion Bridge which sends them to Athens ? to catch a flight to ?
Where do they fly into ?
so teams bunched , taxied to Ayjah ,run up to the fort , get the clue which then leads them to  the detours to be done / Transport camels to the Bedouin in the desert and whatever the other is .
After they deliver the camels they get the clue that sends them though the Wadi's ( where do they pick their gear back? do TPTB magically put them in the jeeps they drive through the Wadi's ?) that leads them to the Roadblock .
Perhaps the pitstop is Muscat .

I bet the other detour is easy and Fran & Barry get lucky, I really can't help but to notice how many untouched mounds of sand are in Barry's picture where as the Hippies look all dug up , even they say so .

The Wahiba Sands,

The spectacular dunes that lie in the center of Oman stretching over 180 kms from North to South. Their colour ranges from deep red to rich honey depending on the time of the day. A unique and fragile environment, these dunes are static unlike those of the Empty Quarter which march forward as the wind drives them.

It might be the dig task. Or it might tie in to the camels; get the clue inside the watchtower, load the camel at Ayjah and deliver it to bedouins in Wahabi.

Here are the flights from Athens to Muscat on Nov 18th. Is this the right date since Phil's call from the middle east was on the 21st? Flights connect in Manama, Bahrain. Looks like a major bunching. As for the lonely duo passing time, I suspect it's E/J since they'll have many hours sitting at the airport.

Depart       Arrive                Carrier/Flight                   Stop/Connex        Trip Time

Sups , goog idea about E&J being the duo , we've seen their airport antics before with the wheelchair racing and all  :jumpy:

As for the lonely duo passing time, I suspect it's E/J since they'll have many hours sitting at the airport.

Please forgive me if it's been mentioned already.  Is Oman (Omar?) the country or a city in a country.  If it's a city, which country is it in?

Oman is a country in the middle east. The capital is Muscat and there are pics of teams in Muscat and Sur (another city in Oman). Don't feel bad. I had to look at a map of the middle east when Oman was first announced. Watching TAR can be a great geography lesson!!

My browser or server or whatever must have indulged in too much Easter candy yesterday  :bny6: :bny6: because I am having one hellva time trying to get into this board and then when I do stay on long enough to do something before the damn thing freezes up on me.  Anyway:

We have hint that the other part of the DETOUR may relate to something the viewer doesn't do on an everyday basis when you can just pop down to the corner 7/11.  If it were brewing coffee I guess they would have said the local Starbucks. So it may be they have to find a local well, draw enough water to fill several jugs, and then carry them on mule back (naw they did that in TAR6 or 7) on camel back to the local village center.  OR, it could just be shop for a list of stuff in a local flee market.

More digging in the sand.  We're starting to run out of unique ideas.  I wonder if they have to find another scarabaeus in one of the piles of sand?

hmm remember TAR7 they had to deliver tea to a certain person in a building ? Naw ,Sur / Ayjah area doesn't look anything like India ? Whatever the other detour is my guess is Fran & Barry take it and they do well maybe pass a team or two ?

now about he times , Chateau estimates Ray  & Monica at the tower in Ayjah at between 11:25 am and 11:42 am
banzai estimates the time of RaYolanda running along the beach with the benches at 12:25
My question , Now are RaYolanda already done with whatever detour it is they chose ?and on there way to the next clue leading them to the Roadblock?

Just thinking about that.  They are definitely apart from the rest (from the getting off the boat shot).  And there is that clip of them leaping over the bench just to get to something straight ahead of them.  The way it is filmed suggests the presence of a zone cameraman.  It's not the kind of angle that their tag-along camera crew could get.  So it is probably a cluebox with number tickets for who knows what?  The 4 teams getting off the boat is on the other side so, logically, Ray & Yolanda have not taken that ride yet.

But we see Ray & Mo running up to the Fort in the same frame so maybe they are on the same boat or ?

these are the pictures I was talking about

Barry has lots of mounds of sand not dug through yet
(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/rawalsh/TAR9_Promo2/TAR_Promo8/pudRFF90030.jpg)

BJ's are almost all dug and he even says so ,so Barry might just be ahead of BJT at the roadblock ?

also while going through frames , maybe this is one of those Oasis's I saw in my travels around Oman ? Lots of palmtrees & a fort in the distance .

Nizwa is good a guess as any, puddin.  The pointy structure (behind Tyler) could be the "single" minaret of the Nizwa Mosque, and the date palms behind BJ are ubiquitous in the Nizwa area.    But, sand pretty much can be found anywhere in Oman.   :snicker:   Good luck looking.

There's a tourist oasis called Nahar (http://www.emptyquartertours.com/nahar.htm) that's 3 km off the Muscat-Sur inland road, but there's not many markers in the caps to place the dig anyplace in particular. As far as the camels go, I can't believe they would make the racers drive very far with their loads: maybe 100 miles tops.

Puddin, I haven't seen the video but is there a chance that is Jo running up the fort and not Ray? :dunno:

I'm kind of confused on how things supposedly go in Sur. Can anyone help me sort these out?

Teams drive to Sur and run to cluebox?
Clue instructs them to take a boat to one of the forts (maybe they have to search to find out which one)?
Cluebox in the fort is detour choices?
Do teams have to boat back to the other side to do the camel detour?

Post by: Slowhatch on April 17, 2006, 09:02:02 PM
Puddin has the video; she says the camera pans from the watchtower down to the camel loading area. It's probably in the niche between the first and second towers. The cluebox could be on either side of the creek, but the teams are definitely running into the tower for something.

Well Puddin you make a really good case for that being Ray. Jo is also wearing a grey t-shirt and black pants. If that is a black beanie or cap it's def. Ray but it could just be Jo's dark hair. I duh-no. And I honestly can't tell if it is a white or black person. Note that Monica is pointing. She could be telling Jo where to go to get access to the tower.

If it is Ray then I agree with your first thought that when they are jumping over the benches they have completed the detour. That would mean it took them approx 1 hour to complete the detour and get back to their car. Since we don't see teams with any backpacks and we have shots of them driving, I suspect that they are instructed to lock bags in their car when they arrive in Sur. The detour starts and finishes on the fort side and teams must take the boat back when finished and go back to their cars to head for the roadblock? Otherwise, behind the scene crews would have to move their cars (which we know they have done before).

Maybe Raylonda are in the lead this week since previews made sure to show us they are in trouble.

If it's a round-trip thingy maybe they have to deliver the camel and bring back something else (like a trade or something). Ok, I'm reaching.
The question is if the detour ends elsewhere what happened to their backpacks???

Amazing Race Journal , the clues are better !!

WEDNESDAY ON THE AMAZING RACE

Right out of the Pit Stop, one Team erupts into a war of words.

Teams encounter a true Roadblock: a flooded road.

Teams suffer and sweat through piercing desert heat while digging for the key to their next clue
One duo falls into last place. Will they wither in the desert sun or fight to stay in the Race?

this place is hard to find

Al Goof:

In the east of Dahira is situated the Al Goof district, the historic central territory of Oman. It contains in its north parts of Al-Hadjar-mountains in its center a lot of oasis-towns like Nizwa and in its south a vast flat desert of (many small stones).

Post by: puddin on April 18, 2006, 06:22:12 PM
Sharqiya:
Still more far to the east the Sharqiya-district is situated, an area of sandy plains and valleys between eastern Al-Hadjar-mountains in the north, the desert of Wahiba Sands in the South and the sea in the east. Sharqiya contains at the coast near Ras al-Hadd not far from the city Sur the easternmost point of Oman. The next peace of land you can reach is in eastern direction the Indian coast near Bombay, in southern direction the beaches of the Seychelles Islands.

This ep is a tough one.  Hard to get the sequence of events down in any kind of reasonable order.

From the start, do the teams do something in Greece before hightailing it to the sands of Oman?

There is one early morning flight from Athens on Lufthansa leaving at 6:15AM via Frankfurt and Riyahd arriving in Muscat at 9:25PM.  Two and a half hour drive to Athens from Rio so the Beach Boys could make this flight.  But some teams,  The Old Timers and The Hippies arrived after sunset at 5:11PM so they won't be able to make this early flight.

Most other flights don't leave Athens until 12:00, 2:15, 2:30, and 3:15PM arriving in Muscat at 10:30PM, 11:05PM, 11:30PM, and 11:05PM.

So it looks like no matter what flight the teams get on, there will be an over night BUNCH POINT as the teams get somewhere and wait until the breaking of dawn at 6:24AM.

And we do see at least four teams together getting of the water taxi or whatnot together: The Beach Boys, The Hippies, The Old Timers and MO/JO.  Are Rayolanda ahead or behind?

Which comes first the DETOUR or the ROADBLOCK?

DETOUR is two parter: (1) Drive a camel to Market or (2) Carry water or shop in the local market.

ROADBLOCK now looks out in the middle of nowhere desert.  Barry, MO, Yolanda and BJ are hard at work.  But no sight of
The Beach Boys.  BJ is either faking it or having fun smashing the sand hills down with his body.  But they could be the team that is hinted at as having trouble in the sand.

This seems to combine the hayfield of Norway with the archelogical dig in Egypt.  Both were team killers!  But have no fear kiddies, this just has to be a NEL.  Otherwise we are going to end up with three NEL's in a row! Boring!

So can anyone put this mess together.  And don't forget they are driving Toyota SUV's through a flooded wadi somewhere or other.

thats a good one Boingo !

me too some of this and that

castles of Sur
31. Snaislah Castle Sur (East)
32. Bilad Sur Castle Sur (East)
33. Aijah Castle Sur (East)
34. Ras Al-Hadd Sur (East)

Sur is situated in the northeastern province of Sharqiya. It is a seafaring town, a fishing village and a trading port all rolled into one. Famous for its traditional ship building, Sur started trading along the African coast as early as the 6th century. It is an old town with winding streets, carved wooden doors and old arabesque buildings.

So can anyone put this mess together.  And don't forget they are driving Toyota SUV's through a flooded wadi somewhere or other.

I'll take a shot
skip to Oman since it appears the task at the Rion Bridge is nothing more than a clue to send the teams to Athens to Muscat  ( where not sure of the flight times because were not exactly sure of the date Nov 17th ? 18th ?19? ....) .Regardless, seems like we have an equalizer ..BJT have caught the pack
Teams bunch up in Muscat HoursOfOperation ?
Catch a Taxi boat to Sur/ Ayjah area , we see all but RaYolanda exit the boat onto the docks /beach whatever .
Teams climb up to the Ayjah to recieve the detour clue .
time estimates thanks to Chateau & banzai
MoJo running up to the Ayjah fort between 11:25 am and 11:42 am ( assumes Nov 18th 19th )
RaYolanda hurding the benches near Sur Harbor or whatever its called 12:25 pm ( assumes the date is Nov 17th)
RaYolanda have not taken the boat ride YET ! Why Ray & Yolanda are not seen on the taxi boat with the rest of the gang is unknown.
One detour we know ,TRANSPORT A CAMEL !
Per vidcaps we see E&J along with MOJO doing this task as they are riding in the back of the small Toyota ? trucks
Also we see Jeremy having a talk with a camel after its been delivered " I don't need your riff right now"
Teams doing the Camel task perhaps deliver the camel to a  Bedouin in the Wahiba Sands in A'Sharqiya Region of Omani ,approx 38 miles out and back .
the other Detour maybe the faster task that doesn't require strength just luck  ( more later )

this is where I get lost
After completing the detour teams are givin a clue to head to the Roadblock to dig for a KEY in mounds of sand
How do they get to the Roadblock ? Do they drive the trucks /Toyotas back to Sur area and catch the Taxi boat back to Muscat ? or do the teams drive through the Wadis from Sur to Muscat and the Roadblock is along that route where we see MOJO & E&J racing side by side through the flooded roads ?
Wheres the Roadblock ? I'm going to guess its an Oasis with some fort ruins in the background ,Nizwa? Why not its my guess .
At the Roadblock we see all but E&J digging for the Key in the mounds of sand
Yolanda / Monica / BJ/ Barry
To note when Barry is digging in the mounds of sand , the other mounds appear full/untouched and BJ's mounds of sand appear all dug up and he says so " they've all been dug ".
It's not known if their are other teams with Barry digging , same goes for all teams .
Clues suggest  a lonely duo entertains themselves by invoking the ghosts of previously eliminated teams  is it to early for the second yield ? If we have a yield I'll guess RaYolanda yield BJT
with this clue being BJT  One duo falls into last place. Will they wither in the desert sun or fight to stay in the Race?  per web promos .
I'm guessing Barry & Fran took the easy /luck detour and have moved ahead of the pack but we all know finding the KEY is pure luck .
Who finds it first ? " I dunno " but E&J are usually the " Lucky ones " so I'll guess they find the Key first and head on out to the unkown pitstop where Phil might ask " do you have the key ?" , E&J win a car  B:) , hey its my story so neener neener .
Second to arrive MoJO
Third Franknbarry
4th RaYolanda
NEL and Phil gets some stinky Hippie Clothes, BJT .

its 2 am ..and this is my story  ;)

As we see the teams driving through a raging river, would weather patterns (i.e., rain) help us target the date they were in Oman?

Post by: puddin on April 19, 2006, 10:37:38 AM
You could try gator :yaya:

this is what I read

Wadis of Oman

Sub Section: Beaches  Wadis  Falajs

A wadi is a dried up riverbed found in the mountain valleys. Wadis come into their own after heavy rains, when the rivers start running again and the vegetation is restored. However, some wadis have year-round running water, with deep, cool pools in which it is quite safe to swim if the currents are slow. On the whole, wadis are only accessible with a four-wheel drive vehicle, as the terrain can be extremely bumpy. Wadis are green, lush oases of palm trees, grasses, and flowering shrubs. It is always safest to visit wadis in a group or with a tour guide. Although they are beautiful places, they are often remote and car breakdowns can happen to anyone. Visitors must also be on the alert for rain clouds, as sudden downpours can lead to flash floods, which are highly dangerous when in the gorges.

The Amazing Race 9, Episode 8 Preview
by Jenn Brasler -- 04/19/2006

Things are about to get interesting as we move into the second half of the season. Teams who had hard luck before may find themselves having an easier time, and teams who were sailing through the race might run into some trouble. What does this mean for the hippies (right)? This article contains mild spoilers.

Six of the 11 teams on this season of The Amazing Race have already faced off with Phil and walked away losers. Five teams remain, and all ten racers are diverse, giving us an interesting group of racers to root for or boo at. Some have gotten ahead thanks to luck, while others have struggled to stay in the race because of stupid mistakes or simply the misfortune that comes from other teams having luck. Eric & Jeremy and BJ & Tyler have consistently finished in the top two, partly thanks to circumstances out of their control. This means the other teams have had to work extra hard to keep up.

Will things continue in this vein in the eighth episode? Will those who coasted with ease thanks to tasks and navigation continue to stay ahead? Or will they finally catch a bad break (or, as some might hope, get slapped upside the head by karma)? Unfortunately, I can’t divulge that information, as I’ve been sworn to secrecy. But Wednesday night is fast approaching and you’ll have all of your answers soon.

I can report that the teams are heading to the Middle East this week, specifically Oman. Conditions there are more brutal than what the racers have been used to so far. For one thing, the sun is unforgiving, and this leg’s roadblock requires one member of each team to be under it for a potentially long time. Will that hurt any of the teams’ chances of making it to the mat before the others? Or will they just play on as they have been?

Even though much of this season has taken place in non-English-speaking countries, the racers haven’t seemed to have much trouble with language barriers. They’ve always been able to find an English-speaker or muddle through with an attempt at speaking another language. Reading signs was probably not too much of a problem either, since Italian, Spanish, and German all use the Roman alphabet. But the official language of Oman is Arabic, so reading signs is definitely much more difficult there for English-speakers. Will this cause any problems? And will the Americans have any trouble getting Middle Easterners to help them out?

If you’ve been missing comedic animals (practically a staple of The Amazing Race) this season, not to worry – one of the tasks requires the transportation of an animal that has no problem voicing its opinions. Look for some animal comedy gold. Also in the comedy category, a trailing team decides to entertain themselves by impersonating eliminated contestants. Leave it to these teams to find moments to be lighthearted in the midst of a grueling race.

The first part of this season has been somewhat monotonous – every week, either Tyler & BJ or Jeremy & Eric come in first, and whichever one doesn’t comes in second. Will that pattern hold? Or will things finally be shaken up? Like I said, I can’t spill. Tune in Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST to find out!

The Amazing Race 9, Episode 8 Preview
by Jenn Brasler -- 04/19/2006

I can report that the teams are heading to the Middle East this week, specifically Oman. Conditions there are more brutal than what the racers have been used to so far. For one thing, the sun is unforgiving, and this leg’s roadblock requires one member of each team to be under it for a potentially long time. Will that hurt any of the teams’ chances of making it to the mat before the others? Or will they just play on as they have been?

The last statement gives credence to the thought that BJ (or Tyler) is faking the scene in the sand.

Most of the signs posted in this thread have Arabic and English.  Only Arabic signs would suggest the teams get away from the big cities, where non-Omanese (?) rarely travel.  We already figured this out.

Note that she says "a trailing team" this sort of puts to rest our idea that The Beach Boys with hours to kill at the Athens airport are the one doing the impersonations.  Could "a trailing team" refer to a YIELDED team?

Speaking of Barry and the sand piles, in his first scene he is surrounded by untouched piles so he may be the first one there, but later we see him in a completely different location and he is shown as being frustrated at hell, so he has obviously been digging and digging and digging......

Puddin's picture of the Wahabah Sands almost is a match for the dig a dig dig gig.

Does anyone remember if theres ever been a Yield during a NEL ?  ??? Why would BJT be killing time at the Roadblock ? or are they just clowning around while BJ digs for the key clue and make light of it ?

what we already know, no mention of the teams on the ES

TAR5 had a yield that was shown but not used in India.  Brandon & Nicole came in last but it was NEL.

This is a hard ep to put together and Easter weekend and a crashing computer (this is my third try at posting this) haven't helped.

There are only two things we know for certain:

1.  The teams start off in the early morning hours from Rio, Greece

2.  The teams end up somewhere in Oman.

Everything else is a puzzle wrapped in questions surrounded by possibilities.

Teams could all bunch up in Athens waiting for flights to Muscat, Oman.  The first early flight is on Lufthansa leaving at 6:15AM by way of Frankfurt and Riyahd arriving in Muscat at 9:25PM.  The most direct flight is on Oman Air leaving at 12:00Noon and arriving at 10:30PM. It looks like a BUNCH POINT coming up.

Whenever the teams leave Greece and whether or not they have to do something in Greece first it looks like they all will arrive in the evening in Muscat.

The only scenes we see of the teams in Oman are in and around Sur, not Muscat.  Sur is about 351 kilometers by road from Muscat.  There is a daily bus leaving at 6:00AM and on some days there is a flight by Oman Air.  Or there could be a charter flight arranged for by TPTB.  Somewhere they pick up cars.  Do they get them when they arrive in Muscat or in Sur?

I don't know if I would want to drive over a length mostly unmarked and in some places unpaved road at night.  So it looks like another BUNCH POINT of some sort.

Whatever happens, we do know that at least four of the teams are together in Sur sometime in the morning.  They probably also take beyond the dhow yard  a free water taxi across the narrow sound to Ayega. Here perhaps is where they run into the DETOUR.  Carry a CAMEL or carry WATER.  One is by pickup truck, the other by hand.

Somewhere along the way the teams pick up Toyota SUV's (most likely 4WD which you need if you are going to drive out into the Wahiba Sands, home of the Bedouin.

Here it looks like the ROADBLOCK is to be found:  find a key in a pile of sand. (OH, shades of Norway and the hay bales, and Egypt looking for the beetle)  It looks difficult and everyone seems to be having some kind of problems.

Eventually, everyone arrives at a pit stop somewhere.  A Bedouin tent camp?  A thankful Oasis with WATER, WATER, WATER and SHADE, SHADE, SHADE?

Certainly looks like a NEL.  So if there is a YIELD (Second and last) it will be wasted on someone for sure.

Sorry, guys, this isn't very good, but there hasn't been to much info to go on.

Enjoy the show, anyway

You're welcome!

I did leave out one thing: my estimated times of arrival at the Rio  (not de Janeiro) pit stop based on a sunset time of 5:11PM and the fact that Eric did not turn his watch ahead one hour upon arriving in Greece:

The Beach Boys - 11:05AM

MO/JO - 3:30PM

Rayolanda - 4:00PM

The Olde Timers - 5:30PM

The Hippies - 6:15PM

Come on now, all you guys, lets hear it for the AARP GENERATION!!!

Just goes to show that age and brains always wins out over youth and brawn!

Being able to read a map and follow directions certainly helps.

We were right for once, a NEL saved The Hippies.

Tell me about it. I could only find a few pictures, and that's after I knew the name from reading the thread. The photo of Hawiyah is from a German model sailplane club page (source (http://www.mfg-markdorf.de/rekorde/050316-oman-3/)). Only after running some of the German through Google did I learn that the photo was taken (1200 meters high) from a camera inside the model plane; kinda neat.

And here is a close up of the clue telling teams to drive to Sur.  It says they must get there by way of Qurayyat.  Also note the warning about a 120 km/h speed limit.

So they had to take the coast road (mostly unpaved)...very interesting. Any bets on whether the geezer guide (first ford) was there by design?

Yes, he was a character!

Here is a "yield card" once alluded to by the Bowling Moms.  At first I thought BJ&T have it here because they had to hand over all their stuff to Phil.  But then I remembered that the Bowling Moms got mugged too.  An they said that they lost their yield card by misplacing it and so they were never able to yield anybody for the rest of the race.

My new take on this shot is that  BJ&T got it out to hand it over but were told they could keep it.  From the looks of it I think it is an envelope with their picture inside.  That is the picture that a team posts on the yield board when they do the deed.

I thought the moms did give it to the show becuase you need to hand in all the clues after the leg and they thought that included the yield item, and then they never got it back.  If not them it was one of the teams in AR6, and the moms never got mugged they only lost money.

And finally we see who the good teams truly are.  Had EJ not had their lame advantage they prolly wouldnt be in the race.  And drove me crazy how there was bunching for BJT but none for DD, DL, or RY[until Greece], good thing they still came in last.

Yes, that's it Never.  I forgot that they lost it just by handing it over by mistake.

I hope BJ & T got to keep their yield powers.

Anyone else notice that in the intro to EP8, Phil never mentioned that the teams went out of their way for a short sojurn to Rome to plug The Da Vinci Code?  They just flew directly from Sicily to Athens! Probably because this week one of the sponsors was RV with Robin Williams from a different studio!

11m viewers in US watch ‘race’ filmed in Oman (http://www.timesofoman.com/newsdetails.asp?newsid=28751&pn=local)

By A Staff Reporter

MUSCAT — An estimated 11 million viewers in the United States, last Wednesday, watched the prize-winning ‘reality’ television show, The Amazing Race, as competing pairs raced their way through the Sultanate of Oman.

The episode was filmed last November in various locations in Oman over the course of nearly two days, showcasing Oman’s natural beauty and culture for a large international audience.

Always on the hunt for exciting new locations, the decision to bring the popular television spectacle to Oman was spurred by an initiative taken by the former US ambassador Richard L Baltimore III in January 2005.

According to a statement released here, the Omani Centre for Investment Promotion and Export Development (Ociped) facilitated the production company’s every need during the planning and actual filming of the programme.

Which is the reason the ambassador, The Honorable Richard L. Baltimore III, was given a special credit line of thanks in the closing titles.

Three of the four people (don't know about the local) can be seen wearing watches, but I can't read the time.
On a different subject, Chateau attached a photo of FrankenBarry's boarding pass, but he left out the important part: a slightly more wide-angle lens and I could have gotten some free plane rides!  ;D

Better late than never (sometimes). I wondered back on page 2 what festival might be in town because of all the street decorations. It turns out the racers missed National Day (http://www.omanet.om/english/misc/nationalday.asp) by only a day or two.
