#5 looks like Jackson Hole/Tetons. I'll add a few of my own
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/Slowhatch/Title/Pueblo.jpg)
An old pueblo or mission?
Old Faithful?
Mississippi riverboat?
Dixieland jazz?

#4 the mountains in the background may be the Sandias--Albuquerque is famous for balloons--but I can't place it.
#13 I'll make a guess and say Williamsport, PA. Notice the Keystone patch on one sleeve.

There are a lot of riverboats plying the waters for tourists, it turns out. So far, the closest match I've found is in New Orleans

Is the pic posted of the riverboat from the flash intros? If so, they are definately going to New Orleans -- no doubt about it. The bridge is called the crescent city connection and boat is the Natchez which sails daily (pre-Katrina). It's safe to say that the jazz player is also N.O.

#10 may look like New Orleans but it is not. I've viewed the New Orleans skyline many times from the westbank and the bridge isn't right and there is another bridge in the picture that doesn't exist in N.O.

Looks like either the Rogers or the Bransens. The build of the male is right for both. For Rogers the mother is petite enough to look like a girl and the front runner could be the son.

It looks like they are running into a stadium? Perhaps they have to find something in the Superdome -- a needle in a haystack?

I don't think that #8 is Gettysburg.  The 2005 annual re-enactment there was a week earlier on July 1 to 3.  Doubt that even TAR or CBS has enough clout to get all the re-enacters to come back on July 9 and 10.  ONLY Civil War enactment for July 9 -10 is in Beverly,West Virginia - the Battle of Rich Mountain. An important battle which allowed the "free state" of West Virginia to leave the Confedercy.  But it certainly isn't as big a battle as Bull Run, Antietum, or Gettysburg. But maybe TAR has more clout than I think.

Thought the mission was the Alamo, but does not match any pix I can find.

Could be Jackson Hole, Wyoming since we supposedly had a sighting of Phil there (but date was week after Niagara Falls sighting.

With the new Yellow and White route marker, perhaps the Niagara Fall sighting on July 31 is for real. Go back and check.

Alas, no Alaska scenes in teaser vidcaps. Sucks, there goes my theory.  But looks like a lot of time travelling around the West for which we had no sightings.

Check again on Grand Canyon; doesn't seem to really be a canyon, more like the badlands of the four corners used in many early westerns.

Could be a shot of the Panama Little League team either in Williamsburg or down in Panama where we believe the teams travel.

The other board had a good matching pix of the hot air balloon from a Utah company.  But the balloons could also be flying in New Mexico well known for its annual balloon festival.  I'll seeif I can get the pix over here

The old mission in vidcap #21 is probably in the Sonoran Desert.  That's the only place where you'll find Saguaro Cactus (Northern Mexico, Southern Arizona, SE Cali).  Also, the tri color flag in front of the mission is similar to the flags of the state of Sonora and the national Mexican flag.

puddin elimination theory: Black, Paolo, Bransen, Gaghan, Weaver, Aiello, Schroeder, Godlewski, Rogers, Linz
episode 2 has no pitstop; double leg; similar to TAR6 Hungarian leg
17. (http://img336.imageshack.us/img336/4547/tar9037fi.th.jpg) (http://img336.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tar9037fi.jpg) this is the Bransen family; so this scene is somewhere in episode 3-4
now if we can find the date of the Little League World Series, we might narrow everything down to what date and what state.

edit: the above looks like a football stadium and not a baseball stadium

(http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/6619/stadium12ej.jpg) (http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_pictures/north_america/united_states/pennsylvania/williamsport_lamade.shtml) this is the Little League stadium in Pennsylvania

I thought someone already said this but I don’t see it up yet:  # 18 is Old Faithful (http://www.nps.gov/yell/oldfaithfulcam.htm)

I wonder if they archived these webcam shots?

And yes, I have been on a driving trip in Southern Utah and those formations look very familiar.  But it is basically in the area of the Grand Canyon because there is stuff like that for miles and miles (hours and hours).  Think of an area like New Jersey.

Monument Valley (http://www.infoameri_valley_1024_768.jpg)

And Slowhatch, you are awesome for finding John Brunious.

I’m trying to help out here. Not that I need recognition but I verified the Natchez riverboat and the bridge early on in this thread and located similar balloons in Utah. I started to wonder if my posts are being seen. Anyway, some comments.

Since we know they are going to New Orleans #17 could be the N.O. Superdome which I am familiar with. There is a mid-america gap so if they head out west after N.O. they may fly to Salt Lake City (Park City, Utah is 45 min. east of the SLC airport where the balloons are). The N.O. airport hardly flys anywhere but Houston, Dallas and Atlanta but it does have some Delta flights directly to Salt Lake City (we just flew there in August).

The canyons of pic #3 could be Sedona but I think it is probably Southern Utah (Canyonlands, Arches, Bryce Canyon National Park) since they are much closer to where they balloon.

edit: #17 could also be Talladega Superspeedway since Talladega was listed as a location. Hubby was born and raised there so I hope to see pics he can help with.

Yes thanks banzai!  ,,>( I really wasn't looking for my name in a credit but was wondering if my post were being seen.

Ok, #10 has really been bugging me. It's a decent size downtown but not New Orleans. The bridge in the distance (perhaps a train bridge) means it can't be the Mississippi river or any other one that has large ships go down it.

If they do go to New Orleans, wouldn't this give the Schroeder Family an unfair advantage?  I assume the trip itinerary has been worked out before the final teams have been selected.

Very much so and I don't understand why they would select a team from N.O. if they knew they were going there. I don't know what cities AR went to for auditions but there was a lot of advertisement and a big turnout for the auditions here in Baton Rouge. I can only guess thats why we have two Louisiana teams in the race. FYI, the audtions here were held on March 5th.

Puddin, I had an idea that the Little League players could be seen when the race goes to Panama.

anyone want to pick through this ? if you notice the Panama teams might just be in the green " Latin America " uniforms so as Chateau has posted the photo of the little leaguers are probably in Panama ..to bad Panama newspapers are not all that .

The World Series is in August but TAR8 is in July. So the only way to see the Panama team is when you go to their country, right?

Post by: puddin on September 29, 2005, 02:36:07 PM
Exactly Banzai .. unless of course they were in some training camp in July but that would be Williamsport and of course we don't see any signs of that in the promo.. besides the racers wouldn't have enough time to travel out of the way ( a few hours drive ).

I agree that Williamsport is not the location of the little league team.

A couple more reasons:
Panama didn't make the World Series this year.

Any team at Williamsport wouldn't have a letter on their cap.

All players in the photos have special Little League World Series caps.

That certainly is Monument Valley, Arizona which is well known as it was the site of many a western in the good old days when westerns were popular: John Ford made many a film here.

That's not the Alamo, and it does not look like an active church so I lean toward one of the reconstructed old missions found around Tucson, especially in the Turnacacori National Historic Park and places like Calabasas and San Bernardino but I can't find pictures of these spots

Right Slowhatch because almost every state such as Utah /Arizona/Montana /Wyoming etc have some sort of cowboy / horseriding type location .
I know the pictures that I posted don't match but in the one with the horses you could see the white peaks in the background . Also GMan nailed Jackson Hole Wyoming way back when as a possable location .. no idea how he could have known :gman:

Just wanted to confirm Pedaler's good work on Bell Rock (south of Sedona, north of Oak Creek)
the vidcap
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/Slowhatch/Title/bell_lookout.jpg)
a similar perspective (looking more northeast)
my crude attempts at Google Earth. It all matches, including the background hills and Hwy 179.
I have a hunch the the ruins #21 are somewhere south of Sedona, but I still haven't found them yet.

I was wondering about that too Gman but if you think about it .I wonder if all the Weavers were race fans ? maybe they have been to Talladega before and it just maybe that they have an advantage as to where to go?  Also fwiw Talladaga is this Sunday .. can't wait , one of my fave tracks !!

edited to add , the Weaver dad was from Alabama
At least one close friend of the family knows she'll be watching. Ellen Kaslewicz, a friend from Roy Weaver's Alabama high school, thinks that he would have gotten a kick out of seeing his family in the race. link (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/orl-vweaver2305sep23,0,962008.story?coll=orl-home-headlines)

Yeh, but it would be better if they took those restrictor plates off and let the cars run full out!!

By the way that sure looks like a match for the Tetons and Jackson Hole. Notice the three similar peaks.

Puddin,  That bridge didn't match the one in the New Orleans riverboat vid cap?  It appears to be very similar in design and construction.

I agree.  The only place in the United States where you will see so many rock capped mountains is the Grand Tetons National Park.  The body of water in front of the mountains is probably Jenny Lake but could be Jackson Lake.

I verified the Natchez riverboat and the bridge early on in this thread and located similar balloons in Utah.

Muchas Gracias Puddin.   :thankyou:

I think I will be able to make a lot of use of that feature.

About the bridge, the photo you have seems to be from the area where the other two bridges are in that town.
I'm not convinced we have the race going to Ciincin either.  There are so many old bridges like this.  Any city with a river more that 100 feet wide could have it.

What I was hunting for is that "doublewide" look that it has. Like two bridges made side-by-side in contact.

Help!   I tried the attachment thing but I get nothing.  How do I tell it that I have an image?

Thanks Puddin, it was the "can't preview" that was hanging me up.  I thought I had done it wrong.

#6 probably isn't the EA-300LP linked to, because that model wasn't unveiled until Jul 27 (http://www.airventure.org/2005/wedjuly27/extra_aircraft.html). It's parent, the EA-300L, has been around for a few years, but unless a sharp-eyed person can make out the registration number, this list (http://162.58.35.241/acdatabase/acftinqSQL.asp?striptxt=ea300l&mfrtxt=&modeltxt=ea-300l&cmndfind.x=0&cmndfind.y=0) of 134 planes will have to do.
The bridge and the ruins are starting to bug me  {{{}. It should be a lot easier than it is: a four-lane cantilever crossing a wide river next to a fair-sized city. I'm not discounting that it might be overseas or from a previous season, but it has a Midwestern look about it. And since we now know that Sedona is on the route, I'm guessing maybe southern AZ for the ruins; the flag in front means it might be a state or federal attraction.
But no luck so far.

If you have broadband, Google Earth is faster; you can zoom into a city and eliminate its bridges in a couple of minutes (once I find a possible match, I do a Google image search--"X City skyline"--to doublecheck). I've been all over the Mississippi-Missouri system with no luck so far. Also fwiw it looks like there's a small sandbar or island just offshore (or maybe it's just the camera angle).
Title: Re: Intro Flash Vidcaps discussion
Post by: gingerman28 on October 03, 2005, 10:58:15 AM
Last time I looked Cinncinatti was still on the Ohio River.

There are 47 bridges listed as crossing the Mississippi. Those other cantilevered bridges (i. e. Outerbridge Crossing between New York and New Jersey) look similar to the one in the vidcap, but no River Boat gamblers in this neck of the woods.

Thanks GMan, I wasn't really paying attention!

Don't they all connect somewhere!  I'm in California.

I tried the Google Earth on the Cincin bridge.  Google's resolution there isn't so good (compared to Global's).  But when I went into tilt mode to get the camera angle toward downtown it became clear that this is not the right bridge.  Google Earth showed that there a tall bank to the river that would hide any view of downtown.

So search on.

Are we dead sure that is not the Big Easy in the background?

I'm dead sure.

1. The crescent city connection does not come down in a diamond shape like the one in the clip. Don't know if I'm explaining right but check the pic.
2. Check the support structure closely. They do not match.
3. The second bridge does not exist in New Orleans. Think of the size of the ships that have to pass under any bridge there.

And, finally I've personnally viewed the New Orleans cityscape from across the river and it just doesn't match up.

I can't see where this could be anywhere on the Miss. River due to the river traffic and and that second bridge.

Just got word from my Arizona spies; they can't identify the mission whatever and they know AZ pretty well having lived all of their 50 some years there.  But they think this is only a partial view and it could actually be from a different viewpoint. They suggest the best possiblity may be in Southeast AZ outside Tucson in perhaps Tubac or Tumacacori.  Will follow up after the program tonight.

I think this is a famous view.  Like it has even been made into a jigsaw puzzle.

It may be in the flats of Colorado looking towards the Rockies.

Don't remember any lakes on the plains of Colorado before view of Mountains.  Looks to me more like Grand Tetons around Jackson Hole.

This is the view that I was thinking of (yes, GMan it is Jackson Hole).  But I don't think it is a perfect match.  It's similar in so many ways.

Okay, I think I got it pegged now.  These mountains are known as the Cathedral Group (http://www.exumguides.com/tripplanner/cathtravitin.shtml).  They include Grand Teton, Mount Owen, and Teewinot (http://www.inergi.com/~nick.parker/teewin1.jpg).

This site (http://www.art.com/asp/sp-asp/_/pd--10238881/sp--A/Grand_Teton_Mountain_and_the_Snake_River_in_winter.htm#) has a shot from the right direction (Snake River).

The Amazing Race: A Rumor
Now that the Amazing Race has started, the rumor mill is grinding. I heard a rumor a month or so ago that the Amazing Race contestants had been in Montana. And in Billings no less. But today I heard another rumor from a pretty reliable source. Not only were the Amazing Race contestants in Montana but the pit stop for that particular point in the race was a ranch not more than 45 miles from where I live! Whether this is all true or not remains to be seen. But this is the way I heard it. The Race leaves Cody, WY and heads for Fishtail, Montana through Red Lodge. They camp at the ranch for their mandatory rest period and then head off to the airport in Billings. Which means they had to pass by the town I live it! This is all too exciting! This is all speculation, however, but it sure makes the race fun to watch.

That's great Puddin.  We'll have to make a map.

On the Grand Tetons, here is a beter stock photo photographed by Daryl Gibson (http://www.drgibson.com/tetons/images/23.JPG).  It will allow some determination of the camera location.

Off to the maps...

Outstanding find by Tarjunkie.  In my book, it ranks up there with Chateau's Puerto Rican structure jump determination last season.

Due to the Saguaro cactus, octolillo, and the mountains in the background, I still think it's somewhere in Arizona.

Great find, but where do we go to find the location?  Looks like US flag on the left and Arizona State flag on the right (but not too clear on the latter)

Part of the Desert Museum in Tucson?

La Puesta del Sol (http://www.thewildwestexperience.com/photo_gallery.htm)
"Located on Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Reservation (northeast of Phoenix/Scottsdale), this adobe style fortress is perfect for a western-cookout or a Southwestern evening. There are uninterrupted views of the Four Peaks and Matazal wilderness areas, the Superstition Wilderness area, Fountain Hills and the Continental Mountains. Covered space is available in this remote western setting with spectacular views."

..........and I was in Scottsdale and Sedona in July.  Who'd thunk????  I know it will probably be closer to the end of July until they get to the desert, but to think I was so close!!!   )<

There was a huge wild fire between Scottsdale and Sedona (west of the Fort McDowell area) while I was there.  Not that it matters, just some curious info.

Great thanx to tarjunkie  =]/ as I spent a bit of time search for Pueblo/Southwestern/Mission style everything....to no avail.

On to the next one..........   *(^

Super Work Tarjunkie.   :t-up:

For those who tried (like me for example).  This link  (http://www.swcp.net/off.html) comes up on page one of a Google search of ["adobe style" arizona evening]

I had tried lots of variations.  And I was trying to come up with a word along the lines of 'evening'.  But I never got it.

ETA:
The 'evening' sentiment comes from Puddin's observation of an electrical outlet next to a bush.  I was thinking it was for lighting and the way things looked kind of dolled up for show... It just never jelled for me.  Just not very many words for Google to grab onto at that site.  That was a tough cookie to crack.

Amazing Race makes stop in Billings

BILLINGS -- The latest season of one of TV's most popular reality shows begins Tuesday night on KTVQ. And part of this year's "The Amazing Race" will look very familiar to viewers in the Billings area.

Q2 has learned that the contestants and crew of "The Amazing Race: Family Edition" stayed in Billings for several days.

CBS won't say where the production crew spent time, or how far along in the series the Billings stop was.

In the Emmy-winning reality show, teams follow clues and race each other around the world on a limited budget.

For the Family Edition, instead of couples, nine families of four are competing for a $1 million grand prize.

The season premiere of "The Amazing Race: Family Edition" airs every Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. on KTVQ.

Ha!  Chateau, those locations may look close together, but a lot of driving on two lane roads is required.  Plus, you add in all of the summer traffic (RVs, etc.) and one can become a very frustrated driver.

There's also a great change in elevation.  Cody's only at 5000 feet.  Yellowstone's roads are mostly at 7500 to 8500 feet.

If they visit Old Faithful, they'll have to make a loop in Yellowstome to get to Cody.  You have to take a left at the T coming up from the Tetons.

Yellowstone is one of the greatest places I have ever visited but the driving sucked.  Oh, I forgot to add all of the vehicles slowing down and stopping to view the elk, buffalo, moose, and other animals..

I don't expect an auto race in Yellowstone.

I believe I've finally made some progress on the Extra 300l. For a few weeks I had been trying to stuff a square peg in a round hole: I was convinced the plane was in Utah for a Detour (with the balloons). Google wasn't helping, so I finally gave up and tried Webshots. It didn't take long to find this plane (http://community.webshots.com/photo/91558160/91558160xEzdAI), complete with URL. Go to this image search (http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=extra+300+site%3Afightercombat.com) and you'll see a bunch of white Extras (also note the company logo, which I've copied). Fighter Combat International uses the 300s in their fleet (I had trouble loading their pages and had to use the Google cache; if anybody has better luck, please share). Compare: the white top and colored underbelly, the registration markings (N-number), and the logo on the tail and behind the cockpit. The bad news: FCI has locations in both Mesa AZ and Niagara Falls, so I can't get any closer than that.

After a bit of study, maybe I can get a little closer. I still can't load the FCI webpages, but a couple of things stick out: first, the Canadian-registered planes have a different design (see here (http://community.webshots.com/photo/43260865/43260865wrYzOd)); and second, the terrain around the Mesa HQ much more closely resembles the vidcap than the Niagara area (Google Earth snapshots below). It's not much to go on, so I'll keep the BBQ crow handy, but for now I'm going to go ahead and call the plane ride for the Arizona episode.
