Title: Most Geographically Challenged Teams
Post by: ghmorello on February 28, 2016, 03:30:39 AM
Throughout the race, teams have made stupid comments relating to geography or other common sense topics.   I hate how dumb people can be.  For example, a reporter SHOULD know what The Hague is.  What comments throughout the race makes you cringe at our terrible geography knowledge?

Not everyone is a geography major.... Something to note.

I'm the biggest geography/flag nerd ever so the list is long!  :funny:

• S27 | Joey | Arc de Triumph

• S28 | Zach |'We're going to Cuba! (Colombia)

• S27 | Krista | We're going to Rotterdam in Germany!

• SAu1 | Sam & Renae | Were going to Hong Kong, Where is that, I don't know In Singapore?  :funny:

I can't think of anymore off the top of my head but two general things that bother me.

• We're going to Africa! | Probably just me being a nerd but I wish they said where they were going because Tiffany & Krista said this for Zambia which is suitable but Whitney said this about Morocco. Which is no where like stereotypical Africa.

• When teams arrive at a travel agent and say I need two tickets to China or Germany or Argentina! Why don't you say Shanghai, Munich or Buenos Aires. I don't like teams saying I need to go to this country why don't you say the specific City! Rant Over  :funny:

True, but there's a difference between geography major and common sense.

Blame the American School System for not teaching geography. Where I live, there are only two geography courses offered EVER, both in high school. One is standard (and very few people take it), while the other is AP, which doesn't delve too much into the locations of places on the map.

Linda & Karen: "Where are we going?" "To buy tickets to Kenya, Nairobia!"

Mama Weaver: Lake Pontchartrain. It's one of the great lakes.

Weavers: (To an English-speaking driver in French-speaking Quebec) El rapido!

TAR23 (Forget who): We're going to Dubai! .....Ab- Abu Dubai!

I'm also a geography nerd. I memorized the world map and a world atlas out of boredom when I was 7. :funny: I remember back in high school when the teacher gave bonus questions on geography, only I got them correct. :funny:

Anyway, TAR23's Ally & Ashley (or at least 1 of them): "Abu Dubai," and a bonus scene showed how they almost flew to the wrong place.  :funny:

TAR22's Chuck & Wynona were guessing for random countries in Vietnam before going to Botswana. :funny:

I'm not sure if this is related, but TAR25's Lisa & Michelle (or 1 of them) said that the sun rises at the west and sets at the east. :funny: :groan:

Also in TAR27, I think there was at least 1 team who thought Amsterdam and Rotterdam are in the same place. ???

Why is every single post in here edited by peach? What the heck did you guys write :funny:

I have noticed a serious lack of recognition for African countries. Perhaps the teams are just excited about going to the continent in general, but I personally find it weird when they treat Africa as a single country in some expressions.. :escape
Aaand I still remember Nick & Vicki's "the country of London"

How do we solve this problem?

Time to add:

"What's the language in Switzerland?  Swiss?" - Tyler

"What country is Switzerland in?" - Brittany

The 2nd one was worse.
Also, it was Korey who said the 1st one, not Tyler. Tyler's reaction to it was funny. :funny: The first one is a common mistake though, so it's not too big of an issue in my opinion.

Tbh I am a Geography teacher and there's a lot of geographical knowledge that I need to equip myself with as well. If you ask me processes like how are mountains, volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes formed, I can give you the full detailed explanations.

But, really, it depends a lot based on your interest in finding out the flags, currency, location of a nation etc. For example, I teach a 10 year old kid who is able to get all the questions right on this iPhone game which matches countries flag, language, shape of the country on the map, currency etc. He doesn't really know the culture or how the people looks like... but because he's addicted to this sort of stuff, he's able to memorise all of them correctly.

Most people today just don't see it as important. Of course it is still important to have some common sense knowledge of generic questions like how many continents are there, where is China, Australia etc... but really, we don't need these info at hand because we can really just google them.

Which is why I love TAR 28's Roadblock a lot. Like, a lot. It is a task which require some brains to figure out the placement of the flags, over the fact that you know each countries' flag. But it is a task which will reward those who have at least some knowledge of the countries flag as well (Cole) and help them to finish the task better.

All in all, it is important to have at least some Geographical knowledge of some basic info... but really, if you ask me what language does the people in Switzerland speak, I'll probably say English and not even sure if I'm right... because I've just never been there before and will not bother to look it up because it does not concern me.

Just to clarify:

Western Switzerland ~ French
Southern Switzerland ~ Italian
The rest ~ Germany

There's also one official language in Switzerland: Romansh, and its spoken in some parts in Southeast of that country.

French, German, Italian and Romansh are Switzerland's four official languages, similar to Singapore, which is also multilingual.

That's really informative, but it makes people confused. Can we ask the Swiss to just combine those languages of theirs and make a new language called "Swiss"? :funny:
(Just kidding. :grins: )

I am interested in geography and has been reading atlas book since I was 7 or less. Also, I sometimes like to draw some fantasy maps on HVS paper with pen.

Brittany the Instagram model's "What country is Switzerland in?" quote wins.

I have to say TAR has had an exceptional influence for my love of geography and traveling. The show has taught me more about how to pinpoint cities, countries, and landmarks on a map than any school has ever done. The fact that the show travels to beautiful cities I have never before heard of such as, more recently, Chamonix and Valletta, makes me believe there are hidden gems everywhere even in the most unlikely places. Plus, the routes for the show are usually more exciting for vacationing than typical (boring) guided tours.

True. This is what makes me think TAR is educational in a way.

So, how many teams will not know about Armenia and/or Georgia?  I could see one team confusing Georgia with the U.S. state.

I only know of Armenia because Charla & Mirna are Armenian, so I predict: all of them until the end of the leg there. :)

I'm currently watching TAR Aus 1.

Sam & Renae

"We're going to Hong Kong."
"What's that? I've never been there."
"Where is it?"
"I don't really know."
"In Singapore?"
