I think that it's just a shot of a train, if they were on it, they would be heading up over the Forth Rail Bridge and onto Dundee, which is the opposite direction for Belfast.
There is no train station at the airport and unless they are going to do something at the bridge, I can't see why they would be going that way.

If it is in the caps,  it is there for a REASON. We see a train? Great! Where is it going?

Are we being told to look at trains/ferries instead of planes in order to get Edinburgh>Belfast?

Peach,

Information on ferries and connections to them has already been developed in the Transportation thread, as has the flight possibilities. It was done weeks ago.
Title: Re: TAR 22 EP 11 (Belfast)

I looked at Scottish Rail schedules. They have 3 departures a day from Edinburgh>Belfast via Glascow/Stanraer. One at ~6:00 am and another at 10:00 am and one at night. Travel time is around 7+ hours.

I suspect that shot of the train is stock footage, but as Peach said, they dont show a train unless teams take a train. It is a waste of available program time otherwise. There are two mainlines from Edinburgh to Glasgow.......one this train is on (northern route) that goes to Glasgow Oueen St Station and another one (southern route) that branches off at Haymarket and goes to Glasgow Central. The connection to Stanraer (ferry port) is from Glasgow Central. but the two Glasgow stations are only about 5-6 blocks apart.

In the screencap that Mattjimf posted, you can see the junction where the tracks split........the right to Dundee and the left to Edinburgh Park and Glasgow. That route is not the most optimal. The better route is the southern route that splits at Haymarket station.

The train is on this route:

I can only think the first clue is to go to a look-out point at North Queensferry to get the clue, then they have to head back to get to Belfast.

For the train to Belfast they would have to take the following route:

The area where the train is shown is highlighted below:
The purple is the mainline to Glasgow and the west coast, the red is the direction the train in the caps is heading.

I would argue that the helicopter shot of the train leaving Edinburgh may not necessarily be the train that teams are on.  The Pilot was just told to get a shot the out bound train and happened to track the wrong one.  The Teams may well be on a different train that is headed to Glasgow.

On the other hand, maybe they are going up to the north of Edinburgh to do this task at some farm:   The time of day (just after sunrise) is consistent from train shot to farm shot

Hi guys,

Long time lurker and decided to register to confirm a few things about the upcoming leg as I'm Scottish & used to Live in Glasgow Edinurgh etc..

It is indeed a Scotrail train.. of the first two shots from the preview, The train was a First scotrail train so guessing they had to go elsewhere in Scotland (my guess would be Glasgow into Queen Street Station, and then on to Stranraear using the Glasgow - Ayr Line from Central Station - there is another Ferry port at Troon but the route is closed at xmas time I think ), and I will cry if they go to Glasgow and on that train line cos they were so damn close to me I could have spat on them..) cos they wouldn't have got a train to Edinburgh airport, and I was also just about to tell you that the street the roller moms were walking along was still in Edinburgh, and very near the pitstop, but you already worked that out! If I can be of help, let me know!

Just for sharing something that I visited which reminds me of the Titanic dry docks in Belfast. The whole ship (on hydraulic jacks for sinking), Belfast shipyard, Southampton docks, interiors and everything were recreated at the film studios in Rosarito, Mexico back in 1996-97 for the filming of the famous movie with Leo DiCaprio which was completely shot in Mexico. I personally took a trip back then and visited all the sets. The photo shows the ship at its maximum sinking capability at the studios' back lot (back Pacific Ocean :-)) before it was dismantled for shooting other films. Let TAR know they didn't have to go all the way across the pond! Greetings to all my Irish friends!

Well leg 10 had teams checking into the pit stop in Edinburgh on Dec 3, a Monday. Two teams checked in before civil twilight (M/K, B/A) and two teams checked in after civil twilight (C/J, M/B). In the montage below, in the upper left photo, you can see B/A turning the corner off the Royal Mile onto Niddry Street for the run up to the mat. The sky is definitely still very light. The next screen cap, #52 (Ep 10, page 2) leaves out the shot of the sky, but still very light outside. On Dec 3, civil twilight was 4:28 pm.

Teams were next spotted in Belfast on Dec 5th racing in the midday. The episode promo for Leg 11 showed a few shots of a train, so possible that the mode of transportation to Belfast from Edinburgh is the train/ferry to Belfast. ScotRail lists three time for this trip,

Lv Edinburgh         Ar Belfast          total time
05:55                     13:453             7:50hrs
10:00                     17:453             7:45hrs
14:30                     21:453             7:15hrs

These are just representative examples of travel. There are tons of "a la carte" options with trains and busses to reach the ferry port, but not that many ferries. The surface transportation also gives Phil time to get ahead and film his standups in leisure.

Since the promos, so far, have shown all activites in Belfast to be in daylight, I think that teams were relased (after 10:00am, Dec 4) in time to make the last ferry to Belfast and then have an HoO through the night in Belfast with completion of Leg 11 around midday on Wed, Dec 5.

There is one aspect of the montage that is interesting......does anyone know where B/M are in that photo. Is it at the Edinburgh airport?

Yeah they are going to get the car at the airport, I thought it may be in the city centre, but from the episode, it's the airport.

It could be that the teams have another 24 hour pitstop in Edinburgh, as M/B are shown running through Edinburgh at night in caps 7-9, and I think they may have checked in about 8-9pm, which if a 12 hour pitstop would make it getting light rather than the darkness shown in the caps, and would create a bunching again for travel to Belfast.

The sidewalk is wet in the photos of M/B in front of that Kurdish restaurant. Weather Underground has rain to light rain on Dec 4 from about 3:45 pm to 8:30 pm. So that jives. Teams might not be bunched leaving Edinburgh, but I think that production would arrange things so all teams are at a bunching point in Belfast in the morning of Dec 5 to get filming done as quickly as possible. Mainly so Phil can start his trip back to DC and get some rest. If they can get done quickly in Belfast, most of the production can get out of town on late flights on Dec 5, with the exception of the production asst/minders that would release the teams for the Leg to Washington, DC in late afternoon/early evening of Dec 6. This is similiar to TAR 15 where WRP had a reserved meeting room at Heathrow for teams to crash out in,waiting for flight to Vegas.

I need to look for absolute last ferry and first ferry to Belfast. I was thinking the bunching point was at the bog snorkling with probably one of those white tents set up for teams to sleep/wait in, till morning.

I forgot to add that sunset was 3:43 and civil twilight was 4:28 pm. So it should be pretty dark at 5 pm. That photo of M/B could be as early as 5 pm. Right?

It could be, but it wouldn't tie in with when they were doing the detour. In the episode, when they are waiting to cross the road to get to the kirk, would have been rush hour traffic coming round Arthur's Seat (I hit it when I was down taking photo's), so I would guess it was closer to 7-8pm that they got to the pitstop.

I am not talking when they checked in at end of leg 10. I am talking about the pit release of M/B for leg 11. It doesnt necessary have to be an exact 24 hour pit stop. Production releases teams whenever they want, to fit whatever schedule they prefer.

In trying to figure out the release times for the four remaining teams, keep in mind production likes to get Bert and Elise and Phil to the next city/country ahead of the teams to do what they need to do as much as possible. The time frame here (along with the multi-modal slower alternative to possibly a direct flight for production) seems to fit that usual scenario.

Beacon of Hope is also a statue in Belfast. Kind of strange putting a name of a statue as a title quote. :res:

Assuming from the caps, I think it's safe to say Caroline & Jennifer will be eliminated in Northern Ireland. :( Mona & Beth are both shown at the ballpark, Anthony and Beth are seen in the Obama cutouts, and Max is seen with the top secret briefcase switchback.

The title is definitely referring to the Beacon of Hope statue though. I don't have a better explanation for that "phrase".

"Beacon of Hope" is a nickname given to that statue in Thanksgiving Square in Belfast. To really understand, one would have to study the history of the independence movement in Ireland for about that last 300-400 years.

From the late 1960s to 1998 in Ulster/Northern Ireland, there was great sectarian violence generally called "The Troubles." A tenuous peace agreement was signed in 1998.

In Dec, 2001, President Bush (43) made a speech praising Ulster (Northern Ireland) for all it had accomplished in stopping the inter-sectarian violence and called Ulster a "beacon of hope" for other societies around the world that peace could be achieved.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/1365765/Ulster-beacon-of-hope-says-Bush.html

The statue was dedicated in 2006/2007 and has since aquired that nickname.

As to how it relates to TAR, it is most likely a personal statement by BVM about his own thoughts about peace. He is pretty outspoken on the subject. That is just my personal opinion.

here are some bog spots mentioned:

Irish bog snorkelling championships in Doohamlet, Monaghan

Peatlands Park in Tyrone

Peatlands Park outside Dungannon

But really, any peaty farm might have a bog-hole!

All of these places are a long way from Belfast. One is actually in Ireland.

Here is another posiblility. There is another ferry port, Larne. It is 23 miles north of Belfast. They could land there......then have the bog snorkeling somewhere between there and Belfast...then head to Belfast. As I said, it is just a possiblility. I also havent the foggiest idea if there is any bogs in that area. There are 7 ferries a day from Cairnryan to Larne, M-F. There are also ferries from Troon to Larne, that would reduce bus or train time about an hour.

I'm not sure about in December, but at the moment there are only two sailings from Troon to Larne which is 11:30 and 19:30.

Peatlands Park (http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/Peatlands-Park-Dungannon-P2847) outside Dungannon is about 30 minutes outside Belfast.

I think the Troon-Larne route is seasonal.

We should be able to find that stained glass window!

Was anyone able to figure out where that window is?  I tried looking, but couldn't find any pictures of that particular stained glass window.  I'm wondering if it's something that was placed there temporarily for the show and maybe it's normally some place that doesn't allow photos or not open to the general public.

Looks like a very tricky detour. Person on the top tent has to look at ordering chart on wall for each course and then place them in that order on tray. Then give tray to table waiter to server people at table........should provide a lot of laughs for us.

Why is Anthony saying the course is Chartreuse?? What is the connection? Is there any connection with a race course memory task here? ???

It should be fun -- at least for those who are watching.  Most people don't know much about the first-class menus, so it would be tough for the teams.

Yes, Troon is seasonal - thats my home town and I now live in the next town along. as far as I know it wasn't running in December, and its also a small town, if there had been camera crews running about from train station to ferry port,  I'm sure I'd have seen in mentioned on facebook by a friend or something..

If teams are taking a train t Southern Scotland, it would make sense teams take a train(s) to Cairnryan near Dumfries and then take a ferry to Belfast

From looking at the screencaps of Beth in the plating tent, it appears that they have a seating chart for who gets what for each course at the table.  Looking past her at the tables, it appears the food is all mixed up and individual plates do not appear to be labled. That really seems to be the key to the task, figuring out just what is on the plate......lol

Can anyone tell who is ahead based on the sneak peak caps? From what I can tell, and I am by no means any good at this, it looks as though the sun is set more with Mona/Beth whereas the sun is much higher in the sky for Bates/Anthony. This leads me to believe that Bates/Anthony are ahead of Mona/Beth at this point in the leg.

But we can also tell that Mona and Bates are standing side-by-side in the very first preview. And it looks to be the same task.

I don't know... just my $0.02.

Mr. DS,
Check the Transportation thread for the schedule. I happen to agree with you. Of 3 possibilities (I am not willing to discount 2 daily ferries from Troon to Larme although they either may not have existed or were very unlikely), Cairnryan to Belfast is the most probable ferry route.

Beacon of Hope is also a statue in Belfast. Kind of strange putting a name of a statue as a title quote. :res:

Pit Stop Location maybe? :hoot: It's located at the Thanksgiving Square

Beacon of Hope is also a statue in Belfast. Kind of strange putting a name of a statue as a title quote. :res:

Pit Stop Location maybe? :hoot: It's located at the Thanksgiving Square
Very likely for a Pit Stop or a clue box.

Is there any chance teams will go to Castlewellan Forest Park's peace hedge maze, one of the largest permanent mazes in the world? I don't think I remember seeing a hedge maze task on TAR.

Oh yeah! :oh What caused Dustin & Kandice's disappointing elimination. I didn't remember seeing it on TV, but I visualized TAR solving a hedge maze during one of the TAR6-10 seasons. Thanks.

RachelLeVega,

Your assessment of what caused Dustin and Kandice's elimination at the end of AR10, ep. 12 is not accurate. Here's the way I remember it:
1. Dustin and Kandice missed the sign for entry into North Africa Horse Ranch and Olive Farm and finished 4th in ep. 11, being saved by an NEL but receiving the Marked for Elimination penalty requiring them to finish first in leg 12 or suffer a 30 minute penalty.
2. Dustin and Kandice got a lead by finishing first in the ROADBLOCK in Casablanca to eat a barbecued ground camel burger, but this got wiped away by a bunch for the flight to Barcelona that all 4 teams got.
3. The maze was the first task in Barcelona and Dustin/Kandice and did not lose significant time versus other teams there.
4. On the DETOUR Dustin and Kandice made a huge mistake. They chose the plodding DETOUR Lug It where no luck was possible instead of the DETOUR Lob It, the infamous recreation of the La Tomatina Festival, which was all luck. That may have given them an opportunity to get ahead by up to 30 minutes.
5. Dustin and Kandice not only didn't finish first, they finished last. This eliminated them on reaching the pit stop on Montjuic.

This was a great team who make one decision of omission in not double-checking the 4 mile distance from Cafe Pirgola for finding the sign and one decision of commission in their choice of the non-luck DETOUR.

There was also a maze task S5 in dallas the stockyards in Fort Worth.

Fixed that for you. Ft Worth really doesn't like to be confused/associated with Dallas.

Gutted. As I predicted to get to Stranraer, they'd have gone Edinburgh Waverly to Glasgow Queen Street and the Glasgow Queen Street to Ayr, then Ayr to Stranraer. Meaning they passed right through both my current home town and my old home town on the train.. I want to cry a little!

kshel,

I know that you are local, but timetables generally are reliable sources of information. ScotRail's route maps and timetable show that trains to Glasgow can originate from all 3 of Edinburgh's rail stations, Waverly, Haymarket and Park. Although you can get off at Glasqow-Queen St., why would you want to? Trains for Stanraer depart from Glasgow-Central, so that would be the best Glasgow station to journey to. The Stanraer train does go through Ayr, but you do not get off and change there.

It is impossible to ride a train betwen Glasgow Queen Street Station and Glasgow Central...without going almost all the way back to Haymarket. There is no direct track betwen them. They are only 5-6 blocks apart in downtown Glasgow. ScotRail intinerary for trips to the ferry ports is to ride to Glasgow Queen Street Station and then walk to Glasgow Central Station. They actually allow 45 minutes for this transfer.

There are two mainlines from Edinburgh to Glasgow. One goes north of the Clyde  to Queen Street Station. The other goes south of the Clyde and terminates in Glasgow Central. Glasgow Central mainly connects to all points south....Manchester, LIverpool etc. While Glasgow Queen Street connects to points north in Scotland.

The RMS Titanic sank in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. On the hundred year anniversary, this event was celebrated/memoralized around the world. One of the ways this was done was for restaurants to serve the dinner menu in first class that was served on April 14, 1912. In my city, there had to have been at least 100 restaurants, at a minimum, advertizing that fact. Many of them posted the menu on their ads. When I saw the screen caps of Max and Katie with the trays at the graving dock, that is the first thing that came to my mind. Then seeing the white tents, aboe and below, confirmed it to me. Below is the full menu. The part bolded is the part of that menu that TAR/WRP used in this episode.

The First-Class Menu

As served in the first-class dining saloon of the R.M.S. Titanic on April 14, 1912

From DirectFerries.com      combined rail/ferry trip from Edinburgh to Belfast.

Journey summary
Outward Journey (05 Sep 2013)
05:55 Edinburgh Waverley
06:49 Glasgow Queen Street Train
SCOTRAIL  00h 54 (duration)

Calling Points
06:49 Glasgow Queen Street
07:30 Glasgow Central Walk  n/a  00h 41

07:30 Glasgow Central
08:23 Ayr Station Train  SCOTRAIL  00h 53

Calling Points
08:40 Ayr Station
09:55 Cairnryan Bus  SCOTRAIL  01h 15

11:30 Cairnryan
13:45 Belfast Port N.I. Ferry  SCOTRAIL  02h 15

13:45 Belfast Port N.I.
14:45 Belfast Central Transfer  n/a  01h 00

I will say that this is just an example of the ScotRail intinerary from Edinburgh to Belfast. All the other connections had the same amount of travel time. We do know that teams arrived at the ferry terminal in Cairnryan and had to spend several hours there waiting for the first or second ferry of the day. As apskip said, this was probably a schedule imposed upon the teams by production, probably to allow time for all the different crews to be ready for the teams arrival in Northern Ireland for daytime filming conditions.

I actually sent ScotRail an email and asked about the bus from Ayr to Stranraer. In thier reply, they explained that that they did not have an agreement with the company that actually owned the track from Ayr to Stranraer and therefore could not book that section as train travel. Teams bought tickets from a different source than ScotRail apparently and got the complete train ride to the Stranraer station.

My google earth says it is 6 miles from Stranraer to Cairnryan...the ferry terminal is not quite that far....maybe 5 miles.......so that is why teams took taxis. Who wants to run/walk 5 miles at 3 am or so in the morning?

There is a shuttle bus that goes from Buchannan St Bus station-Queen Street-Central Station-Airport every 10 minutes, which is probably the Orange line, but it's every 10 minutes and if you miss one, it's probably easier to walk (done the route myself when travelling to London/Ayr via Glasgow, not so much fun with a puppy and lots of bags!).

As mentioned in the Transportation thread, there are straight-through trains to Stranraer that you can book on the Scotrail website, so god knows what they were going on about in the email.

Only certain Scotrail trains travel straight to Glasgow Central (seems to be one an hour) with more regular trains terminating at Queen Street.
