Title: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: theamazingracer21 on October 16, 2012, 07:19:00 AM
Tired of watch The Mole in dutch.

Well I found that the Australian 7 Network have announced at their 2013 programing event (what you in the US call upfrounts) that The Mole is coming back for a 6th season next year.

The mole aired 5 seasons from 2001 - 2005. The first 4 were hosted by TARAU host(with a bad haircut) Grant Bowler and Season 5 was hosted by Tom Willams.

It's an all new game of strategy and teamwork as the team try and win challenges, put money in the kitty and work together while at the same time they identify which one among them is working for the producers to sabotage challenges as they ask themselves, who is the trator? Who is the mole?

Sourse (one of my favorite tv related websites) TV Tonight

I know that there are plenty of fans of the mole here on rff who maybe dont know Dutch. So this should come as great news for you.

Sign ups should be coming soon. Keep an eye on the 7 website.

More Information

At this stage the seasion will be subtitled Culture clash

Quote
The contestants will come from different worlds. With varying socio-economic backgrounds, religions, cultures and beliefs, it’s a sure-fire recipe for conflict and tension as they try to uncover the mole’s identity.

My Tips For Host

Grant Bowler- Grant. B hosted seasons 1-4 but declined on season 5 due to a prior commitments. He always said that he would love to return and all 7 have to do is give him the call. The idea of him being host is suported by the fact that he is Host of TARAU and Narrator of Border Security (both are on 7). However his up and comming Holywood acting career might get in the way, so the ulimate queston for him is can he fit in The Mole and TARAU around his acting career. If he can, we will see him host.

Tom Williams - Tom hosted season 5 after Grant declined. But he has been MIA from nework 7 since 2010 and some fans of the show were not fans for Tom's hosting in season 5. I think he is an unlikily choice.

An outside choice - It is posabliy that 7 may chouse a different network personalty.

I think I liked Tom Williams more, though Grant Bowler improved after being terrible in the first season (which also had a bad cast).  The next 4 seasons had very good casts, particularly the last 3 I thought.  Way better than The American Mole which I think put too much emphasis on the prize money than on putting together a good production and a likeable enough cast.  The Dutch version is also great, and I'm not tired of watching that.  :D

Oooh, I used to love the mole.. it's nice to see it being revived.

Not too sure on this 'Culture Clash' thing... sounds like a bit of a flop to me, but I guess we'll have to wait and see :)

I wouldn't be suprised if the 'Culture Clash' thing is only temporey.

BBAU 2012 was going to be all about Secrets and that only lasted 2 week or somthing.

I think there is no limit but contestants would have to have a australian permanent resident (like all shows in australia)

More Tips For Host

Grant Dener - Grant.D has hosted nearily everything from Au got Talant to Iron Chef Au,  As well as being the weatherman on Sunrise and a former V8 (Like nascar) driver. If 7 cant get anyone else we will more than likeily see him host .

App are now also open. They are open to both Moles and other contestants.

Quote
If your gut feeling is always right, if you think you can spot a “Mole” at one hundred paces, if you think you are a great judge of character, you could be the one who outsmarts The Mole.
Perhaps you can sabotage without suspicion  and fly under the radar – maybe you’d make the perfect Mole. Either way you need to apply to have a shot at winning a huge pot of cash.

You must be 18 years of age or older, as of January 1st 2013 and also an Australian Citizen or permanent resident to compete in The Mole."

Totally agree with you, the cast got better over time. :)
I was a little hurt to see that OP apparently doesn't want to watch the Mole in Dutch anymore :( Happy to read you appreciate it.  :<3

I'm obviously over the moon about this news.  :hearts:  :wohoo:
I loved the Australian versions, except for S5 with the live test and elimination it just took away so much of the mystery and turned it into a milking machine for sms cash. :(

Hope they won't be doing that again, but as I understand this is the same channel that produced Australian TAR 1 & 2 I have faith they'll make a good show of it, with a good cast..
I hope the series won't air before March, when the Dutch series ends - this way we can just keep enjoying the Mole vibe for several months..  :colors :sab  :conf:

Really excited about watching it and sharing suspicions with you all!! It's been wayy too long this great show has been off the air in Australia as well as the USA, so happy they're giving it a new chance!!  :hrt:

I didn't mind the live part of series 5 but the test was so short (about 6 questions I think), maybe live restrictions made that, or maybe that's what they normally did anyway.  Anyway I hope they have a reasonably long test now for eliminations, like the Dutch one tends to have.

Appetenty they did a couple of questons each week about the moles family and life. (what city does the mole live in? What occupation does the mole hold?) before the live segment about the weeks events (for task A what group was the mole in?) So there was more then you think.

I don't know about international versions, but I know the Dutch Mole is making it a point to keep it as secret as possible. It only makes sense since it all revolves around the mystery of the Mole's identity.

In fact last year was the first year (since 12 seasons) the contestants all got spotted (by leaked information presumably) boarding a plane to Iceland. The producers then had to make quite a few adjustments to the places they visited so as not to risk further exposure..
Unfortunately that meant making adjustments to the original locations as well as challenges which had its effect due to improvisation too.

For many reality shows it's not that important to know who is where near the end but for the Mole it's crucial of course.. Once they are spotted in locations important spoilers can leak out which will ruin the momentum of the show.

So in the Netherlands contestants are given a 250.000 fine if they leak any information at all about the show before airing. I imagine the Australian version wants to keep this secret kept as such the same way, for the same reasons.  :cmas27

We have a host.

Today 7 have anounced that Shura Taft will be hosting the The Mole. He was deffanity an out side choice as he was with Ch 9 and he hasn't done much. As far as I know he has deffantily hosted kid shows and day time travel shows for 9.

This is deffantily a risky move but will it pay off for 7, only time will tell.

I think Seven Network should really learn a lesson from ABC. The situation today is pretty much like what it was like 5 years ago, when after a 4-year hiatus in 2008 ABC decided to pick up the American version of The Mole to run its fifth season, and finally refused to renew it after its failure in ratings. That time ABC didn't seem to care what made its bad ratings--they were treating it like a lottery, not giving much attention in many aspects while daydreaming the lottery-ticket could turn out to be a bonus eventually.

Yes but unlike the US version, the Australian version was very popular. In addition we have seen that shows coming back after a few years hiatus can be successful. Just look at BB AU (canceled in 08) returned last year and it was popular enough to get another season this year. So a new season of The Mole I believe (and hope) will be quite successful (or at least successful enough to get another season)

I love it too but I am afraid because of its light heartedness and comedic nature that the Mole may trying to take over and be the cheaper replacement of the Amazing Race Australia. If you were to ask me to choose I would pick the race over the mole without hesitation, so I can't help but hope this version doesn't fare as well so that the race can come back in 2014. I miss the old seasons of the Mole when much more emphasis was placed on mystery, intrigue and suspense where now everything seems sugar coated and dumbed down to be honest.

To be honest I didn't know the promo of The Mole could be in this way... So many comedy elements, unlike many versions around the globe. It's getting interesting.

After watching the promo, it's not surprising to me that Shura is a host for children's shows. :)

Hey there are some new promos on the website and on TV. 2 promos feature a challenge in the Blue Mountains where they must go between 2 cliffs and some players are scared (or are they). In the other promo is in what I believe to be Melbourne and each player is on for about 2 seconds to say something like "I'm no faker" or "I'm not a imposter" then the host comes in and says "but one of them is" before each of the cast is individually before the final shot (the host in front of the players with the logo) is shown.

Also I found a glossary page on the website it states some of the rules that will be in play this season.

Quizzes will be 20 questions. Usual rules: lowest scorer and your out (or Terminated).
Exemption will also be in play. Again like normal win it and its immunity to the next round but it might just come at a cost for the group.
A new thing called a Freebie will be in play. If a player plays it, a answer that s/he got wrong will be counted as a correct answer on the quiz. Players can determine at which quiz they use their Freebie, but each Freebie can only be used once.

Some more information of the show. The article talks about the previous season and the sucess in The Netherlands but there was also a juicy paragraph on this season.

Quote
The return series of The Mole will retain the original concept – a group of contestants playing together to win money for the Pot that one eventual winner will claim, while The Mole works to sabotage their efforts - but with an updated look and a few new twists and turns. Under the control of new host Shura Taft the series will travel up and down the Eastern seaboard of the country and revisit some favourite challenges as well as push contestants to the limit with never-before-seen mental and physical challenges.

We have an air date.

Tuesday July 2 @ 7:30, then Wednesday July 3 @ 7:30 and Thursday July 4 @ 8.
Quote
Hit reality series premieres on Seven on Tuesday July 2 at 7.30pm, then continues on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
Channel Seven has announced the brand new series of The Mole, hosted by rising star Shura Taft, will premiere on Tuesday July 2 at 7.30pm.

Returning to TV for the first time since 2005, the worldwide reality hit features 12 Australians from all corners of the country competing for a prize of up to $250,000. Blindfolded and dropped in the middle of an isolated coastline, they must find their way out. And all they know is that someone in their ranks is "The Mole" – an individual planted in the team to sabotage their every move.

The Mole's job is to create confusion and use whatever means possible to stop the group winning money – while remaining undetected along the way. For everyone else, uncovering The Mole's identity is the only way to survive, and to have a shot at winning the money.

The unique reality format creates unprecedented tension and conflict between contestants in a game of double-cross, dirty tricks and dishonesty. And the question is the same for contestants and viewers alike: Who is The Mole?

“It could be something as small as a blink or a smirk that could reveal The Mole,” says host Shura Taft. “The appeal of The Mole is that it's a game the audience can feel a part of not only because of the exciting challenges but the psychological aspect drawing the viewer into the mystery of working out who's the Mole.”

"The fact one of the contestants is actually trying to sabotage what the others are trying to achieve is fantastic intrigue."

Yup, I still feel the show is too slow paced. Such a shame that it doesn't look like it'll pick up either.

Such a poor start imo. I don't really care for many of the contestants, Ally is the only stand out for me. Not that we'd know who half of the contestants are, Linda and got almost zero screentime :|

I don't want to root 100% for anyone just yet, I'll wait a few more episodes before I pick my favourites

The exemption pass for Kerrie was weird. I doubt she's the mole and it's more of a case of her "moleing". Don't ask me to pick who the mole is yet though, there wasn't very much to go off on this first ep :/

I was kinda disappointed, nothing much happened tonight. If they continue to drag it out a three nights a week, I think I'm going to switch off :|

And Kerry is moleing extroadinarily terribly if she isn't the Mole, and if she is, well she's doing it well because I don't think anyone would suspect her, because her tactics are so out-there.

Anyone else watching this outside of Australia? :)

We need to be patient for a little bit but links do show up. Not sure if I am allowed to post them here though?
So if anyone has trouble finding them, pm me. :)

Yes it was a little slow paced, but that happens a lot on the Mole in episode 1.
I'm definitely not rooting for it to fail, I see no reason why Mole and TAR Aus couldn't take turns... besides I'd much rather have another good show on than hoping it fails.. but whatever.. each to their own I guess..

I do hope they'll bring it down to two episodes a week basically - this stopping half way through a challenge is a bit annoying and offputting. I get that that's the Australian Reality format these days but it's unnecessary and I think it will do more harm than good imho..

Other than that, enjoyable tasks so far, liked most of the cast (so far anyway..  :) ) and the host did a decent to good job too.
Maybe not a Grant in the making but he has his own style which reminds me a bit of how Art hosts it on the Dutch Mole, so good going so far.. Looking forward to episode 2. :)

Apparently it doesn't pick up until next week. Which might be too late - the show only got 800,000 viewers last night, and it'll lose a LOT tonight - aside from the usual ~10% drop for a second episode, the show last night was terribly slow and repetitive, which will put people off, and it starts half an hour later than advertised because there's an extra Home and Away episode tonight as a result of the preemption last week. Long story short, if they keep it at three episodes a week it'll be axed within a month. I'm giving it three weeks until they do a hack job to get it down to a single episode.

I'm surprised the ratings were that low last night, should be interesting how they turn out for tonight's episode.

I liked the season more tonight, I guess it was less about the introduction stuff and more into the challenges which was good. Though I still detest that there's a quiz at the end of each 3 episodes. Are they really going to drag this out 10 or so weeks with three nights a week?

Ally is the clear superstar of the season <333 I don't think I like any of the guys this season at all, the girls are generally okay. And what's with everyone doing such a crap job of actually completing the challenges?? There's barely anything in the pot! They're all be winning nothing at this rate.

Liked episode 2 as the pace picked up a bit. Hope they won't have lost too many viewers..  :(
So far the challenges are heavily borrowed from several Dutch Mole series though.  :funny:

Last nights episode ratted at 700,000 and 3rd in the time slot. It's not looking good but some shows in Australia have a big turn around in the ratings (House Rules looked like it was a flop but pick up latter in the season)

I know. I rewatched the Dutch version of the sandbag challenge to compare them, and even though their cast was basically half the size (with an extra woman) and they had worse supplies (a pole broke), our group only took 20kg more than they did.

The only thing I have to say about this is:

TARAus>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Moleaus

Rooting for Seble, who is my fave right now, though.

And really the minorities are such better characters than the majorities, apart from obviously Ally, who is a stellar character.

Shaun is a complete trainwreck tragedy.

I have just looked in to it and the lowest TARAu2 rated was about 700,000  and recovered for a season average of about 900,000. I guessing 7 is in panic mode.
Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: tarflyonthewall on July 09, 2013, 11:36:19 PM
Yep. It's been moved to 9:30pm Wednesdays, effective immediately (ie tonight). Not sure what this means about pacing - some people are reporting it'll be re-edited down to 'one elimination = one episode', others are reporting a double episode next Wednesday which suggests that won't be the case.
Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: theamazingracer21 on July 10, 2013, 12:26:23 AM
A lot of people were waiting for this but 7 got greedy by stretching out the show. If they wanted a success then they should of kept the traditional 1 elimination = 1 episode = 1 time a week instead of dragging it out.

This is what 7 gets for messing with the format of an originally good show as well as having it replace the arguably best international version of one of the best reality shows (The Amazing Race) to ever grace our tv screens. Yeah I get it, some people here are basically hoping for this series to fail etc, because of TARAus being replaced.
Obviously we don't even know if one being removed means the other being brought back but whatever, I get it especially on this forum. :)

But, for me as a genuine big big fan of the show it's sad, very sad.
It's been so long before any other country than mine took on this great show and concept, that can really be made into a success.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy this season at all, I do, still, after all it's still the Mole..
But to be honest they've so far only copied challenges that have been done and more often better in the Dutch original too.
The casting indeed has been off (especially wrt the men imho), and then the whole campaigning disaster (endless airing of the same promo's, not releasing an airdate till a week before, shifting the timeslots etc..) Let alone splitting it up in three episodes a week with executions that are supposed to be the culmination of tension yet manage to drum up absolutely zero in terms of atmosphere or build up... sigh.. :(

It just makes me sad that even if they had all the tools, basically very decent challenges etc handed to them they still made such a mess of what can be a really great show if handled properly.. :(

I know I am biased about this.. I do like TAR but at heart I am a Mole fan so yes it hurts to see. I still enjoy watching it but it's sad to see what could have been and how they threw it all away - if you're going to bring it back at least give it a proper chance already...  :(

I couldn't even finish that episode, it was just that boring and cringeworthy, sorry guys.

I really wish the mole was doing better, because when they did it before it was an amazing show. But it really does deserve the ratings it's getting cause it is one big mess :( Cast is horrid, challenges are mediocre and editing and programming has been disgusting.

Seeing as it has been pushed to a Wednesday 9pm timeslot I hope Channel seven wakes up and realises the race is a better choice. I'm trying not to be bias, but when TARAus was given a Wednesday 9pm timeslot, it still did better than what the mole has with a 7.30pm one. Though if next year they could do TARAus on 7.30pm one night and then the mole at the same time the following night, that would be so good

Yes. Her in the second challenge - combined with the music which may or may not be a double reference to the challenge first being used in a Spanish-speaking country - was GLORIOUS.

353,000 viewers last night. It may not even stay in the 9:30 timeslot for long with ratings like that.

Keep all your eyes and ears peeled for anything as there will definitely be talk and discussions going on now about the future of The Amazing Race Australia. We can kiss the Mole goodbye unless a miracle happens.
7 can't keep both and will be lucky to even keep one as far as I've heard, let's just hope they don't have to slash the budget down too much for the race, but it is just all about getting the promotion and marketing in check if a 3rd season goes ahead next year.

The fact that they're putting a double episode on at 9:30, as well as the fact that they have a new episode on the same night as State of Origin (Channel 7 almost always puts reruns on Origin nights to avoid the loss of viewers) is a pretty good indicator of how bad the show is doing.

Just in the casting - four minority players (Aisha, Alex, Hillal, Seble), a gay guy (Nick), and a disabled player (Shaun, who was born with spina bifida) with six 'normal' (read: straight, white) people. They dropped the subtitle before the application form went out once it became clear people thought it was going to be intentionally racist, but the casting along those lines is still there.

If that's the case, I'm really looking forward to the episode 18-20 period with a lot going down in a short space of time.

No termination for four whole episodes between 12 and 16 is going to be a pain. I just hope they indeed revert to the 2-hour episode format, instead of 1-hour per week as they did these last couple of weeks. As much as I love old episodes of Criminal Minds, I can watch them off my DVDs any old time - I want more Mole.
Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)

I suspect the reason for the long wait between eliminations is because Erin didn't take the non-elimination offer that time. If she had, I think we would have gotten an elimination in Episode 14. We might still get some pretense of an elimination rather than simply having only challenges for four episodes, but I haven't been able to confirm one way or the other yet.

LOL they lost $12000 in one day. Addict gamblers would not do so poorly... -_-

That's because addict gamblers eventually get to a point where they know what they're doing. These people have no idea what they are doing. I highly think that they even know it's the game The Mole #SabrinaThompson

LOL pay 15 grand to keep Exemption for Erin & Kerrie.

FInd it highly hypocritical that Kerrie talks about being selfless after Episode 1, when a Round 1 exemption is basically pointless imo.

Aisha 4.

Some weird lifesaving and school challenges today. Plus $3000 has mysteriously disappeared from the pot. :P These people are beyong hopeless. <3

Although at the rate of these one episodes per week, we'll be waiting close to a month for the next termination. :groan: Might as well get comfortable. :food:
Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: Topita on August 23, 2013, 05:25:17 AM
Yeah the rate of non-elimination is rediculous..
I guess they had a different planning in mind i.e. 2 a week or something to this extent. Now it seems they just don't even care anymore for the people who are still watching and following after their own huge faux-pas about programming. Seven can just go ***** itself ... (well you know what, I won't lower myself to that..  :funny:)

The whole exemption thing made no sense anyway. Running to get an exemption on a Mole challenge... Really..?!!! :groan:
Let alone the fact that most people never even had a chance.
I guess they wanted the 'easy getting of an exemption' thing to be opposed to the whole group not wanting person X to get it anyway especially the lousy way they 'earned' it, to evoke more drama or whatever. So I'm guessing (and also hoping) that it will be taken this way too this time.

Regardless it renders any 'exemption' and freebie given in this game so useless and pointless yet again, at the rate and in way they are handed out basically. It's definitely not the way they have been used on the Dutch series and hopefully never will be, because it's way out of proportion and makes the competition unfair in the way it's all being simply given away almost. Someone should actually EARN something by doing a physically or mentally difficult challenge -  or preferably both  - and then just keep it.. Instead of getting it easy and then defending it to the point they'd probably lose it anyway..  I mean, what's the frigging point..?  :gaah:
Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: Glamazon Racer on August 23, 2013, 01:06:17 PM
I agree with what you say about the Exemption Topita. It was a little bizarre.

After the latest episode, Aisha is now very much on my Mole radar. As Hillal pointed out, she should've easily won the Freebie in the lifesaving challenge, and yet Erin beat her because she lagged behind. The Mole might not care about a freebie as much as they would care about blowing $5000......

Erin is still my #1 suspect. Aisha's a possibility. I'd throw Hillal in there as a possibility, but I cannot see anybody else as the Mole.
Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: Topita on August 25, 2013, 09:16:47 AM
I've been suspecting Erin from almost episode 1 and haven't wavered really.
I see no reason to change my opinion, after the most recent ep.

I also feel like they have been setting Aisha up for being a rival-finalist (for a while now).
This last episode seemed to be the 'Let's make Aisha look suspicious' show altogether, but really when you look at the facts what has she done...?? She DID NOT go abseiling, knowing the Mole would guess she would. She only dug where she was told (Sam was being totally stupid there but too dimwitted and cowardly to own up to it imho).
She even chose the frigging money when she could have opted for freebies or an exemption maybe with the exemption being bought off-thing to come...

Also if she were the Mole the show would have never made such a big deal about the $3000 thing. I imagine it's probably just a misplacement or the Mole got in there but went unnoticed. No way they would put the limelight on it if she were the actual Mole imho. Just sayin'..  :)
Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: Glamazon Racer on August 25, 2013, 12:01:54 PM
Those are some fair points. I'm still firmly behind Erin too, but the thing I found most suspicious is that Aisha did not seem to fight for that freebie at the beach run, which perhaps would be something the Mole would do. Could be nothing - considering it was only one freebie- but worth mentioning.

$77,900 left in the pot and a $70,000 maximum bid for the final item! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Every item so far has gone to maximum bid, so if this one goes too, they'll be left with &7,900 LOL.

But Ylla acquiring 5 freebies was a great bit of business <3 And throwing her board away to not bid for this last one <3

My guess is Sam. In the auction he was the only person to max bid on virtually all the items(bid $0 on first 2). Why would the Mole not max bid on everything? The auction was anonymous so there would be no repercussions. At least the mole would max bid on the final item at $70,000 because the prize was arguably good enough and it was anonymous. Sam was the only person to bid $70,000, as a point Erin didn't bid max on any item. I have other reasons but at this point I think that one stood out.

This also brings up the auction itself. Does anyone else think this 'challenge' borders on cheating. A person working for the company giving away the prize money can anonymously reduce the amount given away! It also stinks a little that the max amounts basically added up to the pot. I quite like the show but the contestants are hardly given the chance to increase the pot that amount of money so easily.

Hi JJJ, welcome to RFF!

The only thing I disagree about is that while the auction was called "anonymous", it becomes obvious in future days and weeks who bid what for each item as they play the available exemptions and so forth. Hence, it isn't really that anonymous.

Also, the Mole wouldn't necessarily bid maximum bids on every item - they are also trying to remain discreet and hidden, so they have to do their moling subtly to avoid detection.

But you could be right - it could be Sam! I think it's Erin, but we'll soon find out! :)

Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: JJJ on October 09, 2013, 06:54:15 AM
Hello, enjoyed your reply. It became obvious straight away as Sam told them immediately.( I think he knew it was too hard to hide) No one else said what they had won. As shown when Hilly had 2 exemptions and swapped with Erin the other contestants don't necessarily know what each other has. I think if Sam hadn't told they might not have known, depending on how he kept a secret. We have never seen evidence that they know exactly what each other plays in the quizzes either.

Anyway another. In an earlier episode in the challenge to find keys in the ruin, Sam finds a key but tells no one. Fair enough he doesn't know what its for or how important it is. Later when they get to use the keys he still says nothing. Again ok because there is basically enough keys anyway or nothing he wants. After its over Shura comes and asks if anyone else had a key they didn't show, Mozzie I think pulls one out and ooh aah everyone gives a look of suspicion. At this point Sam still says nothing! If you are not the Mole then what a perfect time to pull out your key and look suspicious too. What benefit in keeping the key hidden if your not the Mole. You keep it hidden because it casts suspicion on you too early, and you are the Mole.
Yes i know later he was caught out in the steps challenge but he had no way of knowing the questions and by then there was suspicion all round.
Title: Re: The Mole (Australian Version)
Post by: Glamazon Racer on October 09, 2013, 07:10:08 AM
Definitely a possibility! I just think the way they have edited it, they make Sam look like the obvious choice, which is why I think Erin's subtleness might make her the Mole.

Can't wait to find out!

Really enjoyed Aisha being a goddess as a usual in that maze. <3
