Like last season, I think we should also have a BMS thread for TAR 21. :hearts:
And yay China <333 This could be a trainwreck leg! <33333

I agree. Throwing them into China on the first leg is just plain mean. I expect a few meltdowns and horribly lost teams. :yess:
Should be fun to watch.
I hope after Shanghai, they go to a totally random Chinese remote city (by train) where NO ONE knows English to make teams cray-cray

I think I might go insane if we have teams getting mad at locals for not speaking English... No Jamie & Cara taxi anger please. :res:

I think Shanghai is not the first destination. Even if it is probably a second leg in a city which has a connecting flight to Laos.
I'm going to bitch about China being the first leg. Isn't that country completely overused?
I watched all of China Rush, and never got tired of it! China is a big place with lots of wonderful spots!
I don't mind it either, but Shanghai all over again? When there are many other cities? I am thinking since China is so big it might be a double leg in the country.
I want them in Guangzhou or some provincial capital but neither Shanghai nor Beijing! From Shanghai, Guangzhou is a long way (I am guessing off the top of my head about 500 miles),Beijing is about the same, Xian is over 1000 miles, Chongqing is probably about 1500 miles. AR21 may send them to one of those places, but I doubt it.

Well, is it possibly that they are going to Suzhou, Hangzhou, or Nanjing?I want them in Guangzhou or some provincial capital but neither Shanghai nor Beijing! From Shanghai, Guangzhou is a long way (I am guessing off the top of my head about 500 miles),Beijing is about the same, Xian is over 1000 miles, Chongqing is probably about 1500 miles. Sure, anything is possible. My guess (it's no more than that) is not Beijing (been there, done that), Xian (too far), or Chongqing (too far). It could be somewhere closer.Suzhou is quite close to Shanghai and is a beautiful place according to what I understand. I do not understand what the attractions of Nanjing and Hangzhou are because I haven't studied them, but they are quite close to Shanghai. They will fir the criteria.Well, is it possibly that they are going to Suzhou, Hangzhou, or Nanjing?I want them in Guangzhou or some provincial capital but neither Shanghai nor Beijing! From Shanghai, Guangzhou is a long way (I am guessing off the top of my head about 500 miles),Beijing is about the same, Xian is over 1000 miles, Chongqing is probably about 1500 miles. Looks like second leg is a unused leg from TAR19. Phil hinted at a quick visit back to Indonesia.
Woah, Indonesia again within....... just two season??? No more Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand blah blah blah then. It should be an India/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka destination next OR Australia/New Zealand... but that's weird.
Hoping my Michigan team is still in the race :(
Phil is once again, wearing a hat. :( I like to see him with his chicken-hairdue.
I am actually glad they visited Indonesia again... but where is Philippines? :'(Blame our airport in NAIA, dude! It is one of the WORST airport in the world and because of the "Thrilla In NAIA" incident that happened last month spoiled by Mon Tulfo, Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto there. :gaah:
I AM STEAMING! I AM FURIOUS! I came to Shanghai 3 months after the filming of season 16 and I thought I was so close. Now this season came to Shanghai... I still live in Shanghai...
...

but I WAS ON HOLIDAY!
yep during the first leg filming of season 21, I was in Thailand. Lady luck hates me
Erm no, I've been to Philippines airport and it's not the worst. I've been to even worst ones. :lol:ummm.... which one, joab? :iok

Well, I live and work in Buenos Aires; I usually goes to the Bus Terminal for sending or retrieving packages for the company I am part of a couple days a week; and I didn't see the teams the day they arrived from Salta. And that gives me a 3 of 3 in not crossing my path with TAR, including previous legs in Bs. As.; so lady luck hates me too. :groan:

it seems like we are very far into the race, and we havent seen a new FF team go far since TAR17 :hearts: (Kisha and Jen won TAR18 but that was their 2nd race)
we havent seen the blonde FF team for a while, Im just glad the Sri Lankan sisters are still running :luvya:
No new countries?! :( I thought we had Gibraltar, lol
We were close through Ibiza!
We were eventually bound to have a season where no new countries were to be featured.
However, we have underutilized countries: Spain (No full leg ever), Turkey (1 leg), Bangladesh (1 leg), Indonesia (1 season).
Every season has that one team that I go... "Are you kidding me" in good ways. Like, never expected that kind of team, and really interested in that said team.
And then there's the beauty queen thing. I don't get the obsession with them.
25,000 mile is pretty WTF.

I think it is 72K KILOMETERS, maybe?
So are we counting the US in those 9 countries visited in this season? I seem to recall that the US is not counted but i could be wrong..hopefully im not
Marionete, I think you are misreading what is being referred to. The thinking was that the 72,000 "miles" were actually kilometers, which would be about 44739 miles.Oh, okay, then it seems right ;)
Correct! So are we counting the US in those 9 countries visited in this season? I seem to recall that the US is not counted but i could be wrong..hopefully im not
Yes unfortunately when Phil says '8/9/10/11 countries' at the finish line, the count always includes the US, so we would assume the promo follows the same rules.

Joab, your estimate is not the remotest bit close to the real mileage for AR5. It appears that you are using either a World Race Productions source (notorious for overestimating the mileage of Amazing Races) or some other invalid source. Here are the statistics for each of the legs, using www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/howfar.htm. I am going to approach this by separating out the air miles, which I will show as statute miles at the conversion factor of 1.15 statute miles/air mile, from the fairly small ground transportation segments, which will be in statue miles to start with. One approximation which will tend to understate the air miles is that real trips involve connections at airports not on the line between the origination and destination point. I have used connecting points in only a few instances where I know them.
Here are those segments:
Air Miles Statute Miles
1. Los Angeles to Montevideo 6182
Montevideo to Punta del Este 90
2. Punta del Este to Montevideo 90
Montevideo to Buenos Aires 150
3. Buenos Aires to San Carlos de Bariloche 857
4. San Carlos de Bariloche to Buenos Aires 947
5. Buenos Aires to St. Petersburg 8171
6. St. Petersburg to Cairo 2073
7. Cairo to Nairobi 2173
Nairobi to Kilimanjaro airport 100
Kilimanjaro to Mto Wa Mbu 100
8. Mto Wa Mbu to Kilimanjaro 100

Manila to Calgary 6862
Calgary to Banff 80
Banff to Calgary 80
Calgary to Denver 939
Denver to Dallas/Ft. Worth 658

That gives me a total of 43225 air miles, which is equivalent to 49709 statute miles. Direct statute miles from ground segments total 1924. The total in statute mile equivalents is 51633, more than 20,000 miles short of 72K.

YES, I AM USING A WORLD RACE PRODUCTION SOURCE. CAN'T I? :res:
I have absolute trust with Phil and his words at the finish line. :) Who cares about evidence and statistics. They could have included all the layovers, transfers or road travelled distance without YOUR knowledge. :)
Austria doesn't count.
Austria doesn't count.
Totally agree with Joab on this one. Why tha hell we need to research? They SAID IT , even if it's wrong , it's in them that we'll believe , obviously.
For the record, Austria does count. Teams were not only specifically directed to pick up their cars there, but is also listed in Wikipedia for a visit. And the Netherlands and Germany counted in TAR19, so this makes sense.

It seems weird, but they may not count The USA as visited, only a start and finish.Of course that doesn't count ..
Though they probably should include it in the count as a visit.
Do they not count countries if they just pass through? What about airport connections?
The number of visited countries could climb.
Complicated.
Maybe only countries Phil talks count as visited.
I hate to bitch and moan about my favorite show... but I really don't like this cast. I know I'm going to be in the minority on this, but I need to voice my opinion. There's only like 3 teams that I really like (Gary & Will, Abbie & Ryan, Amy & Daniel), and I'm indifferent about the rest. I'm really, really hoping that'll change once the show starts and we actually see teams racing, but I really don't like this cast as a whole right now. :( :( :(
Actually i liked the premiere too. The tasks were ok i guess, the only issue i have is that they seemed to be a rehash from previous visits to China (Ping-pong from S1 and eating task from S10).However, we still don't know what comes in between Russia & The Netherlands
The season is filled with stunt casting, which at first i thought it was annoying but if the cast can entertain for the whole season without getting boring then fine by me.
Still disappointed that we wont get a new country this season but i can forget about that if the next set of legs are good. Especially the one in Spain.
Emmm... Actually, the premiere of this season was... okay for me
Yeah, I agree with the editing which seems very rushed, except the abacus part (which is totally the highlight of this episode). The tasks were okay for me too, though the rappelling task seemed unnecessary for me. It could be replaced with self-driving scene to the airport (just like old TAR that I miss :) ). The ping pong task wasn't that bad as well as the eating challenge. In my opinion, this premiere was better than the last season. :escape
For the cast, well, I heard many people complain about the casts which are 'stunt'. What do you guys think? I think casts for this season are okay. I love all of the teams so far.
I am actually worried when people complain a lot about TAR USA nowadays. I don't know... :duno: With many people think that TAR Australia is better (not that I hate TAR: Australia. I love TAR: Australia too), I'm afraid that someday TAR USA loses its fame. :(
Anyway, do you think that one of the reasons why this premiere is disappointing for most of people because of its duration? Original TAR is just an hour episode, which is shorter than TAR Australia. Isn't TAR Aus more than an hour episode? Correct me. :)
Hope it's gonna be a nice season.
TARAus is supposed to be a 1hr episode but overrated talent shows always runs overtime.
TARAus is supposed to be a 1hr episode but overrated talent shows always runs overtime.
They need to get rid of those starting line tasks, it's a waste of time.
So I guess even though it's 3 continents, it's not a bad route. Indonesia, Bangladesh, Turkey and Spain <3
But I guess since the prize is possibly $2M, they've cut the budget of the route.
If this $2M prize continues for the rest of TAR seasons, does that mean we will continue to have small routes? :gaah:
TBH, I would rather have a HUGE race route rather than this $2M prize.
After all only one team has a chance at $2M..
TAR19 went to these new amazing countries but some of the challenges disappointed..
TAR20 had a REALLY good route! It was actually an AMAZING route compared to recent TAR seasons.
But seriously, if $2M means smaller route, I'm not happy.
I was hoping to see Africa 3 seasons in a row (it was unexpected in TAR20) but sadly, not this time.
We'll have to wait and see what this season delivers.
Cutest clue giver ever!!
Moan about Natalie and Nadine or whatever their names are. In Australia ep 1 aired last night, and they were so annoying! Always yelling and bickering and just ruining a decent episode.

I rewatched the Season 12 Finale:
Phil "10 CITIES, 4 continents, and over 30,000 miles..." :groan:
I don't know where to post this but:
<33333333333333333333 so cute
The only thing to <////3 is Amy and Daniel's BAD LUCK CABBY unfair elimination. But then again, there were ten teams and if they got eliminated this early, it really means it was not their race to win. :'(

I rewatched TAR5 finale last night and i noticed that Phil said at the finish line: 11 countries..
So they didn't count the US..and i know, there is no new country on this season, but there could always be a chance.

because usually I can't decide who I want to go home next.
usually I can't decide who I want to go home next.
The worse performing team after 2 weeks (by a wide margin) are Gary and Will (averaging 8.5 placements). Every other teams is averaging at least 6.5 or better. take it for what it's worth.
I'm enjoying this season so far, honestly :hearts:
Hopefully it keeps getting better and better
Yeah :(I'm enjoying this season so far, honestly :hearts:

Except for the fact that good teams get eliminated by bad luck. :'(
the locations really suck this season, especially the indonesian ones. :lol:I think they try to show different side of Indonesia. :)
Indonesia is way prettier than that random thingy.
:hyper: back to Dhaka!!! I just wish that they wouldn't spend 2 legs in every country it feels like.
Well, they "bull raced" in Madura, but I'm not sure if that counts.
But here's my (:;) , :gaah: , and :tantrum session.
I love the teams this season, but the s19 style routing is so frigglestomping  because I wanted to see something more diverse and different. China = Taiwan, Indonesian legs, Bangladesh legs = Thailand legs, and now it's Turkey = Malawi. Let's just hope they won't do two more legs in Turkey despite the fact that TARAUS2 already visited there twice.

I actually thought episode 4 was the best so far this season.

What I meant was that IF Turkey also had two legs, it would then become a s19 route. But so far as the episodes have been shown on TV, it looks like s19.
How is Turkey=Malawi?!!!
