The real translation is: he/she explained to the couple that they have won 2 consecutive legs and the men smiled widely

The writer saw Phil in Turin (Torino) and he was excited to see him because he is Phil fan. They filmed the guys arrival to mat at least 3 times until the producers were happy of Phil's greeting and the guys reaction.

I think the helicopter task with Art/JJ is in the dome of the Oval Lingotto Olympic Stadium (http://honeymoons.about.com/od/italy/ss/turin_pictures_8.htm) (former Fiat Factory) in Turin.

eta Which is interesting, since the RB is also at Lingotto (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,26886.msg716233.html#msg716233). It leads me to believe that one of the two 'paired' tasks (the painting or the helicopter) isn't a Detour option, since if they both were it would be fairly imbalanced (unless the helicopter task was ridiculously hard).

The one question I've got right now is how the Museo d'ell automobile fits in. Maybe where they get their product-placed cars?

The title of the episode confirms it for me... also Phil's pre-show interview:  This season’s Racers will endure one of the most competitive courses ever, as they find themselves skydiving in Argentina, training with the Masai warriors in Tanzania, racing through Africa’s “Garden of Eden,” putting their taste buds to the test with one of Italy’s most popular cuisines and searching for King Ludwig’s quarters in the German castle that served as the inspiration for the castle in “Sleeping Beauty.”

now i know i might be WAY out of line but I'm SPECULATING that the helicopter task might be a FAST FORWARD
i know it seems ages since we last had a FF but i think this season will bring it back
but i have my reasons:

- we know Art and J.J. won Leg 3, and they might have a huge lead over the other teams
- we know from evidence that Art and J.J. win Leg 4
- if they arrive first in Italy, they might take the option of the FF, even if they screw it, the roadblock should be close to it (FF and RB at Lingotto)
- the place they are performing this helicopter task opposite a helipad looks quite small, and if it was the place of a Detour/Route Info/Roadblock, i wouldn't imagine all 8 teams performing the task in there
- if they won the fast forward it would explain their 1st place win in Italy and i would think if they didn't do it, other teams would beat them in the regular challenges

i AM confident with this speculation, but my only setback is that the FF seems kind of easy/crappy

please tell me what you think of this

I worked in a remote control helicopter shop and help repair the broken parts...

for ORDINARY people, to be able to control a helicopter, especially since the racers had a nervous feeling to keep stay in pace in the race, it's not that easy....

Especially when they have to land it on top of their friend's head...

Landing in the ground required a gently movement of your thumbs and you had to feel it, slowly down... you can't just boom drop and land,

Even in Japan, they had a remote control helicopter national competition where all helicopter experts battling each other getting their copper through several obstacles...

So if this task considered to be FF, i can back up the arguments...

Turin is home to the famous Shroud of Turin. More recently, it has become the home of the Slow Food Movement.

Hope we see a lot of pasta and meatballs.

So happy that they gonna have a food challenge in Italy, just hope we gonna see a beer task in Bavaria in leg 5. :keeta: :hrt: :keeta:

Eating challenge most-likely in roadblock form...

Anyone can determine the place/stadium that Brenchel's at?

It looks round.. And is that a canadian flag?
I believe it's not the Italia61, where it used for the winter olympics?

It's not a Canadian flag, 99% sure. Unless it is like a special type of flag, it isn't the Canadian flag.

I think one of the food task and the bungee jumping is the Roadblock, while the other is an Active RI. Unless the helicopter is indeed a FF... ???

Any chances of a FF, Peach?

Ok,so i'm speculating this way :

Roadblock : Rapel

Detour : Safe Landing (the helicopter) or Gold Insurance (paint the statue in gold)

Beheading must have to do with the statue and they must be cleaning it since it says "a dirty task." We saw the breakdown and the backtracking could be someone forgetting something.

Red Rachel breakdowns are commonplace, I don't know why they need to keep mentioning it

I really hope that we see the return of the Fastforward, i think that should be 2 FF on every season of The Amazing Race. I have missed FF, in the two last seasons.

now i know i might be WAY out of line but I'm SPECULATING that the helicopter task might be a FAST FORWARD
i know it seems ages since we last had a FF but i think this season will bring it back
but i have my reasons:

- we know Art and J.J. won Leg 3, and they might have a huge lead over the other teams
- we know from evidence that Art and J.J. win Leg 4
- if they arrive first in Italy, they might take the option of the FF, even if they screw it, the roadblock should be close to it (FF and RB at Lingotto)
- the place they are performing this helicopter task opposite a helipad looks quite small, and if it was the place of a Detour/Route Info/Roadblock, i wouldn't imagine all 8 teams performing the task in there
- if they won the fast forward it would explain their 1st place win in Italy and i would think if they didn't do it, other teams would beat them in the regular challenges

i AM confident with this speculation, but my only setback is that the FF seems kind of easy/crappy

please tell me what you think of this

suprah3ro,
the release time of Art and JJ is a minor factor compared to the flight times out of Asuncion through Sao Paulo or Buenos Aires to Europe. I expect that multiple teams will be on each flight over. All I can say is that Art and JJ should be on the first flight combination, but that says nothing about how many other teams will be there with them.

Now, with an episode title of "Taste Your Salami", do you think there might be any foreshadowing of what the Italian food being eaten is?

just for me to recap all that's been said

1. it's in italy. what the heck kinda salami is there in germany?

2. the helicopter thing is probably a FF. that looks tedious. kinda like a drinking game. think as annoying as jenga.

3. art and jj were AT LEAST 2 hours, if not 3 hours ahead of everyone else. here's a good question...if they're going to fly, who's to say everyone else isn't with them. then again, are there like separate rooms to fly the helicopter...cause that's like an apt room.

everyone should pay attention to the most important question...will joey and whoever come in last?

Yes i know what the episode title says. The other things was just possibilities what it also could been. We have seen pizza in season 6, so i would like to see pasta and meatballs with the salami! Hope you understand what i`am trying to say? :duno:

Do you recognize the brand of helo/controller?

One thing I can make sure is that the helicopter is a 2.4GHz 4 Channel RC Helicopter, the closest type I could get is this one sold in London, UK (which I'm sure made in China..)

Based on their possible flight issues and the fact that we know they check in in the dark, I think Mark and Bopper are quite a ways behind the other teams.

The big castle in the beginning of the 2nd promo is Palazzo Madama in Piaza Castello where the pitstop was located. It could be the background of the pitstop or most likely general scenery.

How so? It looks likely, but from the past few seasons it looks like they've been trying to phase out the FF.

Salami task is probably the other half of the Detour (along with the statue washing).

I'll do the caps as soon as I can...

Possibilities for the M/B go back are endless, but the vid says GET OUT OF ARGENTINA

Are at the wrong airport in BA, have to go to another
left something at the travel agent, have to go back (IF that is in BA)
Didn't get right boarding cards for the ongoing leg, have to go back
Since they made it to Argentina, this should not involve passports, anyway!!

etc....

Flights are limited, anythng major could have put them a whole DAY behind, and we know that is not the case...

So far, we see only Art and JJ doing the helicopter, with a voice over spotlighting them, which suggests but does NOT confirm a FF.

We see only one team member doing the rappelling which could be a Detour,  RB, or a route info...they are clearly trying to snag a clue.

We see Rachel doing the salami with Brendon right there...Detour or RB?? ???

I think the salami could be taste some in the shop then match it in the market.... maybe,

I think it's Vanessa. So maybe rappelling is a RB ? Because we saw Jamie doing it ???

eta Which is interesting, since the RB is also at Lingotto. It leads me to believe that one of the two 'paired' tasks (the painting or the helicopter) isn't a Detour option, since if they both were it would be fairly imbalanced (unless the helicopter task was ridiculously hard).

Landing an RC chopper on a pedestal that small would be hard for most experts even if it was stationary. With amateurs like the contestants and having the platform move with their partner's head? It's going to be pretty much impossible.

And I am wondering about the cost of building that "landing site". It may be very expensive...which would also argue for a FF task.

Then again, we believe ARt and JJ win this leg,so one assumes if this IS a FF, they ace it.

D- Statues or Eating

We don't know, we are still spec. But the promo refers only to ARt and JJ landing a helicopter, we only see them doing it, and we believe they finish first, all of which makes it possible.

TWO seasons with NO FF makes me wonder though.

The pic's above of the cousin's , that look's like  an engine, Maybe the detour is to reassemble an engine and the salami, I think B/R start the salami task and then switch. I'm probably waaaaay off about the reassemble , but I do believe the salami is part of a detour and B/R switch. I also agree that Art/JJ are doing the FF.

The switching is a good idea because their argument could start at the salami because Rachel doesn't want to do it or something. Then when they show up outside the museum we see them still arguing. Maybe the roadblock is first this time because it is at the same location as the FF.

Is the airport shown in #17 the same as the airport in #18 to #20?  I had assumed it was ASU (Acuncion Silvio Pettirossi International Airport) but I can't find a matching image anywhere.

And is that Art and JJ with Bopper and Mark? If the airport is ASU - then we have major bunching in Asuncion. Art and JJs lead evaporated.

so far the specs are :

1. Fly to Turin, Italy (Caselle Aeroporto, Torino, Italy)

2. FF: Oval Lingotto, successfully land copper on top of their partner's head.

3. RI: The Museo dell'Automobile, there are 2 speculations :

    - They've given that museum logo at the Pit Start and find the place related to the logo. Once they find them, the clues were put somewhere in that machine (as the replacement of cluebox) or they need to find/match the museum logo somewhere on that machine..

4. RB: Lingotto, retrieve clues at the bottom of the building by repelling down.

5. RI: Unknown

6. DT:

A. Statue Cleaning (Location: In front of workshop, still Unknown)
B. Salami Tasting (taste & match, Location1: Deli Shop, Unknown --> Location2: Piazza Vittorio Veneto Square)

if there's anyone experts on geo and map, this can be unfold even more after we try to figure out the distance between detour options and a route info lead to detour...

We don't know for a fact that there is a Fast Forward, and I wish people wouldn't post it as such without actual evidence (such as an image of a Fast Forward clue.) For all we know the helicopter thing is one side of a detour that no other team took.

Helicopter is a FF so...

If there is a fast forward, you wouldn't need to complete any other tasks on the leg. And they're looking at the roadblock clue. And there's no hint of a green tinged envelope or clue page in their hands.

Until CBS in the press releases, in the photos, or in the promos shows something that directly and explicitly proves there is a fast forward, then you're making an assumption.

I have a rule that I have followed where TAR is concerned, and in a lot of other ways as well... Assumptions are dangerous.

so far the specs are :

7. Pit Stop : Piazza Castello, Palazzo Madama.

as for now, except the uncertainty of Fast Forward, everything else in the above specs were almost true....

Given the tram, appears they are going south on Via Po towards the Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

Curious, given the darkness, could this be the last task, because if they go north on Via Po from the piazza, then they would be at the supposed pitstop (Palazzo Madama) 0.5 miles.   :duno:

I am going to support this hypothesis based on the information in the AR20 Transportation thread showing them as the only team with the possibility of getting ahead by catching a very early flight Asuncion to Sao Paulo, connecting to Rome and into Turin. It depend on when they finished leg 3, but if they did so by 230pm they could be released around 230am. No other team had the opportunity to catch that first flight and all the connections flow from that..

Good. :yess: I don't want my country boys to leave anytime soon. After looking at other threads, don't Art and JJ get eliminated at this point? BlooperGuy,
Something bad can potentially happen to Art&JJ, but it's unlikely. It's certain that they will be among the first teams to reach Turin since they have their pick of airline flight connections by virtue of reaching Asuncion airport first. In Turin, anything can happen but they are not going to drop to last. My prediction remains that they will go for and get a Fast Forward, which would mean a first place finish.

Actually, I think we see Art and JJ and Bopper and Mark at the airport in Ascuncion.
This is how I think it plays out:
Teams are released from the pit stop and directed to a specific travel agent to purchase tickets
Travel agent does not open until 8am
Teams meet at the Ascuncion airport - Bopper and Mark talk to Art and JJ and realize they got the wrong tickets and have to go back to the travel agent. They get stuck in traffic or there are no seats left on the earliest flight.
All of the teams other than Mark and Bopper (aka Mopper) are on ASU EZE  G37470 1205 1355 which puts Mopper 3 hours behind in Turin.

The case from here seem to be, Leg 4 sites in Turin is the Museo d'ell automobile, Oval Lingotto Olympic Stadium (former Fiat Factory),Piazza Vittorio Veneto, rappel down carpark, paint statue and food challenge.
And maybe FF: helicopter task.
Palazzo Madama in Piazza Castello is the pitstop.
The leg is a Non-elimination leg.

Everyone look at the picture of Bopper and Mark, they're at the location of the helicopter landing task, right? There's that platform in the background. And yet they've opened their clue and... no fast forward envelope. At least not that we can see, which is the tricky part.

On the other hand, I noticed in promo 1 "Brenchel shocker" there was a quick split screen of Vanessa repelling, while Art and JJ are doing the helicopter task. Could that be showing them doing a ff while the other teams go ahead with the roadblock? If not, what other explanation could there be?

This leg does not have to be an NEL. The fact that production left after Mark & Bopper checked in just means that they did not expect any more teams to appear there relatively soon.

There could be some team which was stuck on the leg so Phil had to do an on-the spot elimination. They could be lost or waiting out a did-not-finish-task penalty, or even stuck at an hours of operation.

It is also possible that some team had bad luck with the flights so they got stuck way behind.

All that said I still would not be surprised if this leg was a NEL.

Whatever fights they had or however hard these legs were we know Brenchel made it to the end plus anyone that knows them and have followed them for 2 yrs know they would never quit the race, they can fight, cry or be angry about it but they are true competetors and would never give up.

Can't tell who that is under Danny's arm , but the cap with the red holding the clue ropes I believe we see this guy in one of the caps of either Vanessa or Jamie , I think he is one of the guy's on the rapelling crew. Yes I just checked , You can see him in cap 38.

let's not forget that they were in Turin at December 4, that means that the sun sets around 6pm and soon after is completely dark. So Brenchel running around for the salami detour around sunset can't be later than that.
But for mark and Bopper to check at the pitstop at 10pm, 8hours after the picture above, something must have gone really wrong.

kiki,

There is a place where in its time zone you get sunset around 6pm on 12/4/2011, but northern Italy is at a much higher latitude and it's only a little west of the center of the European time zone.

Official sunset for Torino 12/4/2011 was 448pm.

My research to find a city in the U.S. at the far western edge of its time zone which might have a relatively late sunset basically failed. I tried a number of different alternatives but even Escanaba on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and El Paso failed to get any later than around 5pm on that date.

My own sure thing is the Santa Cruz, Tenerife, Canary Islands, which is part of the Greenwich Mean time zone (along with Portugal and Great Britain). Sunset there was 608pm on 12/4/2011 because it is a bit west of the center of that time zone and because it has the low latitude of 28 degrees.

This is an interesting issue to a geographer like me (I realize that few others care), so I will look in countries with single time zones such as India and China to see what I can find.

It helps to have a correct data point. El Paso is at the far eastern edge of its time zone. El Paso is in the Mountain Time Zone....not Central Time Zone. Just because El Paso is in Texas does not make it Central Time Zone. You can verify this by checking world clocks and test El Paso against Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Lubbock, Waco, Amarillo or Midland/Odessa. You will find a one hour difference between El Paso and the rest of those cities.

now i know i might be WAY out of line but I'm SPECULATING that the helicopter task might be a FAST FORWARD
i know it seems ages since we last had a FF but i think this season will bring it back
but i have my reasons:

I WAS RIGHT!!! yay   :yess:

Crappy FF, but did I see more than one set of "helicopter tools" there? That means whoever wants to do the FF can try for the FF right? Or is it just me? If everyone can attempt the FF then it's worth it.

I gained nothing about Italy from this episode. It just went from the best to the worst episode. :gaah:

You are correct, Dr. Rox and I knew I had made a mistake about putting El Paso in the central time zone long before you corrected me. However, I wanted the time to check out sunset times for the western edge of China and India. Mumbai India had a 6pm sunset on 12/4/2011. However, the big winner is Urumqi China, which is due north of Kathmandu but in a time zone 2.25 hours earlier. That means its sunset was slightly before 730pm on Dec. 4 2011.

I also want to make it clear that all examples are Northern Hemisphere only. To use Southern Hemisphere during a quite long day for all of that hemisphere has no particular relevance for this comparison.

I was trying to find an updated timeline (and I do appreciate that there has been a lot of information and I'm not implying that anyone has dropped the ball) but I was curious as to whether the Asuncion pit stop was short (less than 12 hours) or long (over 24 hours).

chill_sd,

I am calling the pit stop at 26.5 hours, carefully calculated to make sure that Art/JJ could not get on an evening flight from Asuncion to Sao Paulo on December 2. See the AR Transport thread for more detail.
