This season, the teams will travel across five continents, 22 cities and close to 40,000 miles, visiting Paraguay and Azerbaijan for the first time in the history of CBS's "The Amazing Race."
Challenges on Season 20 include skydiving in Argentina, training with Masai warriors in Tanzani and a race through Africa's "Garden of Eden." -----------------------------------------
... stops will include Paraguay, Azerbaijan and Tanzania. In all the racers will visit five continents, 22 cities and nearly 40,000 miles.
Emmy-winning executive producer Bertram van Munster told us the route "is so off the wall and so crazy that it almost killed us. It's really very original—the whole ensemble, the cast and the route and the challenges are really unique, it's probably one of the best [seasons] we've ever done—and very competitive."
Because they all have the drive to win, van Munster revealed, we won't see season 20's sharing clues, and answers, that all but destroyed the competitive spirit in recent seasons. "These guys are not doing it [sharing information] this season," he assured us. "They get the drift. Sometimes it happens, but at the end of the day they have to all screw each other, if they want the million bucks."

So exciting!!! I have high expectations after seeing our cast! :yess:

Also, I'm not sure where the most appropriate place to point this out is, or if someone else has already mentioned it elsewhere, but the Episode 2 title on the CBS Schedule says:

"You Know I'm Not As Smart As You" (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Still no luck on SB Argentina. There are churches named Santa Barbara, and a street in Salta named SB, but the only towns I could find were either wide spots in the road or outhouses in the wilderness. Maybe the producers will put up a sign for an "amazing" SB.

There's a small village named Santa Bárbara close to where the skydiving happens. It's in the department of Cafayate, which is where Neobie placed the skydiving.

Ford Announced as the Official Auto Sponsor of “The Amazing Race”

CBS AND FORD PARTNER TO RUN THE 20TH SEASON OF THE EMMY AWARD-WINNING “THE AMAZING RACE”

Ford is the Official Auto Sponsor of the Series and Will Have a Digital Extension on CBS.com

The New 2013 Ford Taurus Will Be Featured in the Premiere Episode on Feb. 19

CBS and Ford have teamed up again to run THE AMAZING RACE this spring as 11 new teams set off on a global adventure starting Sunday, Feb. 19 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Ford’s sponsorship includes on-air components featuring the new 2013 Taurus in the premiere episode, when teams begin the race in Santa Barbara, California’s wine country.  After receiving their first clue from host Phil Keoghan, the 11 teams jump into a new Ford Taurus where they receive additional information about their first destination via the “MyFord Touch” system in each vehicle. Teams will drive their cars to Los Angeles International Airport before departing on their first leg to Argentina.

Ford’s Fiesta and Focus will also make appearances in additional episodes this season.  Also, one lucky team will win two new 2013 Ford Taurus vehicles for finishing in first place in an upcoming leg of the Race.

Ford will also have a digital extension on CBS.com where viewers can take part in an online scavenger hunt to collect virtual passport stamps throughout the season. In addition to weekly prizes, one lucky fan will have the chance to win a 2013 Ford Taurus, along with $15,000 toward their own amazing journey.

“Ford’s partnership with CBS and THE AMAZING RACE provides another exciting opportunity to collaborate within a unique entertainment environment and showcase our newest vehicles and technologies,” said Crystal Worthem, Brand Content and Alliances Manager at Ford Motor Company. “This season has allowed Ford to seamlessly integrate the new Taurus in-show and online, while our collaborative efforts throughout the season will allow viewers to further engage with the brand and our growing portfolio of global vehicles.”

THE AMAZING RACE sends 11 teams on a trek around the world.  Each team is comprised of two people who have a pre-existing relationship with one another. At every destination, each team competes in a series of challenges – some mental and some physical – and when the tasks have been completed, they learn their next destination. Teams who are farthest behind will gradually be eliminated as the contest progresses, with the first team to arrive at the final destination winning $1 million.

The dropzone is 11km/6.8mi driving distance from the Pit Stop along Route 68, with an airport (possibly where the skydiving plane takes off) between the two.

These pictures, I will spec is the Route Info task (or Detour) located inside the Patios de Cafayate Hotel & Spa in Cafayate, Argentina

It appears that this task might be the last task before they can check in at the pit stop for LEG-1, and as we often hear, "make your way on foot (or search the area) for your next pit stop!"

And the dish that they were making is called EMPANADA :

Quote
Argentine empanadas are often served at parties as a starter or main course, or in festivals. Shops specialize in freshly made empanadas, with many flavors and fillings.
The dough is usually of wheat flour and butter with fillings differing from province to province: in some it is mainly chicken in others beef (cubed or ground depending on the region), perhaps spiced with cumin and paprika, while others include onion, boiled egg, olives, or raisins. Empanadas can be baked (Salta style) or fried (Tucuman style). They may also contain ham, fish, humita (sweetcorn with white sauce) or spinach; a fruit filling is used to create a dessert empanada. Empanadas of the interior regions can be spiced with peppers. Many are eaten at celebrations.

In restaurants where several types are served, a repulgue, or pattern, is added to the pastry fold. These patterns indicate the filling. The fill of the Empanada determines the form of the repulgue, for example a cylindrical form would suggest a chocolate prunes filling. In Tucuman, this type of Empanadas was banned, since, in the opinion of the local public, the tender of their taste was too avant-garde.

Tucumán Province
This province hosts The National Empanada Festival, in the city of Famaillá.
The only varieties are: beef, mondongo, chicken, with the latter two being the most authentic.
Preferably cooked in a clay oven in a tray of fat, or in a gas oven
The empanada Tucumana is hearty - the meat filling being minced into 3 mm pieces, then partially cooked and allowed to cool while it absorbs juices. Cooking is finished along with the final baking.
In addition to meat, spring onions, pimento and vinegar are added. Potatoes, peas, and olives are rarely used in the Tucuman preparation.

The dough is simply prepared from flour, water, and lard.
A traditional celebratory meal in Tucumán might include: empanadas, locro Tucumano and meat tamales, and to drink wine from Amaicha del Valle, or Colalao del Valle. Cheese from Tafí del Valle with honey and/or bitter orange syrup as a dessert.

Salta Province
Empanadas from Salta are called salteñas, and are distinct from Tucumán-style empanadas as they are smaller and baked without the addition of fat or oil. Typical fillings include carne suave or picante - beef or spicy beef, cheese, ham, or chicken. The beef versions typically have potato, egg, red pepper, and green onion with the meat.

The first flight from Buenos Aires into Salta arrives at 8.40am and our first timestamp is at 7.53am, so I think the camera is set to Pacific Time, 5 hours behind Argentina. Assuming the same camera was used for the Argentinean photos, we have:

GROUP ONE (most likely safe)
Nary skydiving: 12.53pm
Vanessa skydiving: 12.59pm
Elliot skydiving: 1.17pm
Vanessa and Ralph empanadas: 1.52pm
Elliot and Andrew empanadas: 2.07pm

GROUP TWO
David and Cherie empanadas: 3.52pm
Kerri and Stacy empanadas: 3.58pm
Misa and Maiya empanadas: 4.02pm
Joey and Danny empanadas: 4.07pm

Flights from Buenos Aires arrived at 8.40am, 10.00am, 11.01am, 1.40pm... Considering the two-hour drive from Salta Airport to Cafayate, anything after the 11.01am flight can be discarded. The gap between the two groups seem to be around two hours rather than one, so I'm assuming that teams were split onto the first two flights of the day from Buenos Aires to Salta?

Group One: AR 2450 from Buenos Aires AEP to Salta: 0625-0840
Group Two: OY 854 from Buenos Aires AEP to Salta: 0750-1000

I am absolutely amazed about all the photo timestamps. You can see how much time the crew spent filming the bikes (obviously more than once), being at the start line, and getting to the first task.
Even after 20 seasons now, we're still seeing new things about the production side of things. Gotta love it!

There's a new clip (1:56 long) from the premiere with Phil's opening monologue to the teams at the start line. Things to note:

-He mentions the Express Pass, which can be used up until Leg 8.
-The starting line task involves 100 balloons but only 11 have clues.  There is no mention of a Hazard or any sort of penalty though.  <-- All the start line tasks in the past have had some sort of twist for the last team to complete it (S15 - Eric and Lisa's instant elimination; S18 - Amanda and Kris' Automatic U-Turn; S19 - Kaylani and Lisa's Hazard), so I find it odd that nothing was mentioned.
Title: Re: TAR 20 Ep 1: "Tears Of A Clown" (Santa Barbara, Argentina)
Post by: Prophet on February 16, 2012, 01:20:17 PM
Well, the elimination and the auto Uturn were too strict and the Hazard was too stupid, so maybe they decided just to put them on flights.

It kind of makes me think we could see another first leg NEL of some sort. Seasons 18 and 19 followed the set up in TAR15 with a starting line task and a first leg NEL. Could this one be doing the same?
Title: Re: TAR 20 Ep 1: "Tears Of A Clown" (Santa Barbara, Argentina)
Post by: theschnauzers on February 16, 2012, 01:41:34 PM
It may be that the start line clues also determine the flights for the teams out of the country. That would have a penalty or risk built in, and the producers wouldn't need a penalty. NEL or no NEL is hard to say from what we've seen; but from a viewer perspective, the lack of a first round elimination has been beneficial to getting to know the teams.

New video on CBS.com has Brendon/Rachel, Dave/Rachel, and Art/JJ skydiving at the same time, and with no other team in sight. We've now seen these three groups in Argentina, with Mark/Bopper missing:

Brendon/Rachel, Dave/Rachel, Art/JJ (could be first or second group)
Nary/Jamie, Vanessa/Ralph, Elliot/Andrew (could be first or second group)
David/Cherie, Kerri/Stacy, Misa and Maiya, Joey/Danny (most likely last group)

The gap between the Nary and Vanessa skydiving photos is 6min, and that bewteen Vanessa and Elliot 18min. I know it's possible the skydiving pictures were taken at different altitudes, but I suppose that's where Mark/Bopper most likely fits?

That looks like Mark at a table of empanadas behind the sisters, so they might be in the last group. But if they were in a skydiving group before, they could have gotten lost on the way from the airfield to the winery.

Okay... so here I speak as we often assumed/spec'd about the starting line tasks....

Mostly, the Starting line task had some sort of LOGICAL ASPECT or HINTS or CLUES in one of those items the contestants need to be searched through,

On the plate numbers, we've seen two of those Japanese Letters...

On the umbrellas, there are hints telling them that if they use the word 'twice' it will make the clue at the top of the shrine make sense (or maybe sounds right : 'TAI'WAN - 'TAI'PEI)

Now,

Let's think of this season's starting line challenge,

There are 100 Air Balloons, 'ONLY' 11 (ELEVEN) contains the right clue (Route Info? Flights? we dunno  :duno: )

Among those 100 balloons, do you guys think there will be a certain patterns, hints, painted or maybe stick on the balloons, or maybe the basket have a certain designs...??   :duno:

or else, the worst scenario is they put just RANDOMLY....

Here's some caps...

FWIW, I think the clues will be random, and will have one of two flights in each envelope. But teams won't know if its the earlier arriving flight until they check in at LAX. (Which would be different, and build in the penalty of the later arriving flight and teams will be rushing to the airport because if they had the first flight, they don't want to be late.) They haven't done it that way ever IIRC for the first flight, and it would shake the teams up early.

From the Ford press release:
Quote

The list is simply a speculation on who is safe for the 1st episode. The safe teams are more or less ones that have been spotted later on in the race, or teams that from the time stamp in the pictures are clearly ahead of others.

Can we take this photo:

Figure who all we see, and coordinate that info with the press pics and how the flights are grouped for the skydiving...and say then say if this is the first flight, who might be in the lead at the skydiving?

I think that the teams that are definitely not in these photos are: Mark & Bopper, Kerry & Stacy and Nery & Jamie. I'm that sure if that is indeed Danny.

In the skydiving video JJ went first, followed by Rachel(Brendon), then Rachel(Dave). The second Rachel looked like she was totally into it and unafraid!

Quote
Revised start times for tonight's CBS programs: 60 Minutes (7:21pm ET), Amazing Race (8:21pm ET), The Good Wife (9:21pm ET) and CSI: Miami (10:21pm ET) due to CBS Sports live coverage of the PGA Tour's Northern Trust Open.

I believe the only other time we ever had a preview of the season like that was back in the TAR 5-6-7 period, when we got three full Races aired in 11 months. I don't recall CBS ever doing that on any other occasion.

I might be reading this wrong, so please for give me. I remember Season One had a lot of shots from the season and we knew that Frank and Margareta were safe until the underwater Ice swim. That preview gave a lot away too.

Or did you mean something else.

Truly unfortunate.  :( Seems to me bad luck followed them right from the point Phil shouted Go.

My faves after episode 1 are: Rachel & Dave, Brendon & Rachel, Nary & Jamie, Dave & Cherie, Mark & Bopper.

I do hope that since Dave & Cherie seem to have a theme song in the race as Jet & Cord/Herb & Nate did (correct me if I'm wrong), I hope that implies how far they make.  :)

I kind a liked the Roadblock, all the girls had to skydive because the men thought they would have to skydive
And some people struggled also with the directions, it was something else than the usual extreme challenge where you can't lose that much time.

Wow that was a great start to this season, shame it wasn't a longer opening episode, I think there is going to be a lot of tension amongst the teams like the good old days. Like all the teams except those morons from Big Brother, they have nothing on Jeff and Jordon from TAR 16, that idiot making the comment about Mexicans and the border control guys was just plain dumb, hopefully they go sooner then later.

I think the clowms are going to win this.

That was Danny. Even though he couldn't drive struck, he's still a licensed driver. Elliott and Vanessa likely don't drive, which is becoming more common these days with people who live in the city.

I've never heard of such an instruction on the first roadblock of the Race. I had noticed something as a Note on the clue, but I hadn't had a chance to replay the episode and freeze-frame that to see what it said.
I haven't seen anything to explain that curious restriction either, and I'd rather not guess. Was there anything on the insider videos about this?

Edited to add: I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but it appears the show is going to continue to not have a sign at the pit stop mat, nor likely to see traditional clue boxes based on this episode. It wouldn't surprise me if we don't even see one traditional clue box this time out.

If it was height issues, they wouldn't need to exclude one twin at the expense of another. I'd say there might be a weight requirement, but how that would allow for the Guidos to complete it without issue I don't know.

Maybe it's to ensure that everyone doing the task can drive out to their partner (what with the car being stick)? I think Andrew was doing the driving for his team the whole leg.

I doubt it was related to driving a stick-shift car because Danny said (and showed) that he could not drive a stick-shift.  I'm confident our crew will get to the answer one of these days.

Or, what if it's because he's a professional athlete.  I know he's not on the level of let's say a top-tier NFL player, but many, if not most, professional athletes have clauses in the their contract that prohibit them taking part in "risky" physical activities.

I think Ralph's size is the limiting factor here. Many skydiving sites have height and weight restrictions, which could easily apply here.

Thanks, Jimmer  :jam:. Since yakc (http://homepage.mac.com/yakc/) seems to be taking this season off, your efforts are appreciated.
Looking at the chart, it would seem the flights were more important than the tasks: if a team arrived on the first or second plane, then they stayed with that bracket. Strange, then, that we didn't see any driving/ticket drama on the way to LAX. At least one team (Kentucky) took Hwy 154 over the mountains, which is not the obvious choice. And most teams had no trouble finding SB Argentina. So everybody was probably given specific driving directions for that leg.

I would guess that the instructions said that SB was located along highway 68 south of Salta. And that is pretty much all you need to know. There are just two roads leaving the south part of Salta and 68 is one of them. SB is the right on this road, approx 140km south of Salta.

The point here is that if you know SB is on R68 then it is easy to find, otherwise it would probably have been very hard since it is just a couple of houses which probably not many know about.
