Featuring host Ryan Seacrest and returning judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL is set to return with a two-night event showcasing the nation’s most extraordinary talent Wednesday, Jan. 18 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Jan. 19 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). Auditions will continue with a special, extended primetime broadcast of AMERICAN IDOL Sunday, Jan. 22 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT), following the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (6:00 PM-CC ET live/3:00 PM-CC PT live) on FOX.

The show’s judges – Jackson, Lopez and Tyler – traveled to Savannah, Aspen, Galveston, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Diego and St. Louis in search of contestants with the raw talent and potential to become the next AMERICAN IDOL. Auditions continue on Wednesday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Jan. 26 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT); Wednesday, Feb. 1 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Feb. 2 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT); and Wednesday, Feb. 8 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

The contestants who impress the judges will head to Hollywood and be put to the ultimate test during the “Hollywood Rounds,” airing Thursday, Feb. 9 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT); Wednesday, Feb. 15 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT); and Thursday, Feb. 16 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

On Wednesday, Feb. 22 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), those who make it through Hollywood must then take the “Performance Challenge,” where they face the judges one last time before the top male and top female semifinalists are revealed on Thursday, Feb. 23 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

The judges have their say after every performance, but it’s the viewing public that determines who will advance to the next round of the competition and who will go home. In the milestone 400th episode, airing on a special night, Tuesday, Feb. 28 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), the first group of semifinalists will take the stage to sing for America’s votes.

The following night, Wednesday, Feb. 29 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), the remaining semifinalists will perform. The competition takes an intense turn on the two-hour LIVE results show Thursday, March 1 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) as America’s vote reveals the first set of finalists, then those that remain will have one last chance to perform for the judges who will round out the 2012 AMERICAN IDOL finalists with their wild card picks.

The following week, the competition heats up when the finalists take the stage on Wednesday, March 7 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed). One finalist’s journey will end as America’s vote is revealed on Thursday, March 8 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed).

The 2nd set of auditions begin in about 15 minutes for Eastern and Central time. (01/19/2012)  Did anyone stand out last night? There were several younger girls who stood out but I didn't keep track of their names, the only other one was Phillip Phillips who performed last and I did like the addition of his guitar. I'm not sure he can make it past Hollywood week.

The judges shouldn't have let go " Shane Bruce " from Moundsville so soon.  Sounded like he had a gifted voice that needed alittle help and i'm sure next time he was on stage could have done better.  I guess maybe next year for him.

The audience for “American Idol”, the reality singing competition,  dropped by some 18 percent to 21.6 million viewers when the TV singing contest returned for its 11th season, according to early ratings figures on Thursday.
The drop was even bigger — about 27 percent – with viewers ranging from 18 to 49-year-olds, the audience group most coveted by advertisers, Nielsen figures showed.
But despite the fall-off, which Fox television executives said they had expected, the two-hour “American Idol” season premiere was still the most-watched show by a huge margin on U.S. television Wednesday night.
The 21.6 million viewers on Wednesday, compared to 26.2 million who watched the 2011 season premiere when new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez made their first appearance for the 10th season.
Fox television chairman Kevin Reilly said last week that the network was expecting the audience for “American Idol” to be down this season because of the show’s age.
But media watchers say “Idol” — the most-watched show on U.S. television for seven years — faces the stiffest competition ever in 2012 with rival singing contests “The Voice” on NBC, and the debut season of “The X Factor” on Fox, which ended just one month ago.

'American Idol': Gabi Carrubba's 'Sunday Morning' has gorgeous tone

http://www.youtube.com/v/JRSfjx61VUw?version=3&hl=en_US

"American Idol" kicked off its eleventh season Wednesday night (Jan. 18) with a stop in Savannah, Ga., where we met 16-year-old Gabi Carrubba. She chose Maroon 5's "Sunday Morning" for her audition and we were smitten.

She had the purest, most beautiful tone, it was absolutely lovely. We loved the small changes she made to the melody line. The judges were similarly complimentary. J-Lo also praised the changes, Steven said she "nailed it" and then she went through with three yes votes.

'American Idol': Joe Magrane's daughter Shannon auditions

http://www.youtube.com/v/7k98cZkjVW4?version=3&hl=en_US

"American Idol" was graced by its second progeny of a 1980s St. Louis Cardinals player when 15-year-old Shannon Magrane auditioned in Savannah. She is the daughter of Joe Magrane, a pitcher in the Majors from 1987 to 1996, finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting in '87.

Anyway. Shannon auditioned with "Hold on Me" by Etta James and we loved her cool, jazzy voice, especially considering her young age. The judges also praised her "nerves of steel" performing in front of her gaggle of friends and family.

There was also an outstandingly awkward moment when Steven Tyler tells Joe Magrane his daughter is hot. *headsmack* We hope to see her later on - she can duet with Nico Smith, son of Ozzie Smith. Ozzie and Shannon's dad Joe played together on the St. Louis Cardinals.

'American Idol': Amy Brumfield goes from the tent to Hollywood

http://www.youtube.com/v/hgUQDhokObg?version=3&hl=en_US

"American Idol" found a rather interesting girl in Amy Brumfield, whom Jennifer Lopez dubbed a "hipsy" (a hippie and a gypsy). She is out of work and her husband works odd jobs and because they can't really afford anything, they live in a tent in the woods. For real. It doesn't seem like a necessarily sad story, though - she's kind of a gypsy girl and prefers to be happy and out in the woods rather than miserable and indoors.

For her audition, she does Alicia Keys' "Superwoman" and it's startlingly soulful. We should've assumed that a Tennessee woods gypsy would be soulful, but still. Lovely.

The judges also love it. Steven Tyler says, "The spirits and the children of the woods snuck into you." What did you think, "Idol" fans? Were you a fan of Amy Brumfield?

'American Idol': Phillip Phillips' 'Thriller,' 'Superstition' win the night

http://www.youtube.com/v/7I14mSyh5GE?version=3&hl=en_US

"American Idol" may have found its winner in Phillip Phillips. Let's run it down - he's super cute, he plays the guitar, his Southern/kinda country and guess what? He can sing and play really well, too, so that's just a bonus.

For his audition, since they can't use instruments, Phillip did "Superstition" and reminded of a less affected and cuter Casey Abrams. Then the Randy told him to get his guitar and he did a wonderful cover of "Thriller." Awesome. Cannot wait to see more of this kid.

We could even put aside that his name is Phillip Phillips (which someone up the chain of command should answer for). What did you think, "Idol" fans? Awesome, right?

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl: 'Music is more' than 'American Idol' or 'The Voice'

Dave Grohl admits his Foo Fighters schedule doesn't leave him much time to check out TV's singing competitions.

Which isn't to say he doesn't have an opinion about them. The frontman for the long-popular band -- which has Album of the Year and Best Rock Album (for "Wasting Light") among its six nominations in the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, airing Sunday, Feb. 12, on CBS -- has views both positive and not-so-positive of such shows as FOX's "American Idol" and NBC's "The Voice."

"Anything musical, I support," former Nirvana drummer Grohl tells Zap2it. "I think it's wonderful that people get a chance to celebrate music when they watch those shows, and maybe discover songs they've never heard before and get personally invested in someone's path.

"But honestly, people need to know music is more than that, more than commercials and more than bright lights and television and glamor. Music starts from the heart, in your living room and at school. It's great that those shows inspire people to want to go out and sing themselves, but one thing I think is dangerous is that in some way, it uses that as an example for a career."

In fact, Grohl stresses, "I don't think music should be a career option. I honestly don't. I got lucky. I won the lottery, but I think people should play music for the sake of playing music ... and it should be its own reward. When I look at those shows, I understand those people are trying to do really well, but music's not a contest. And it's not a TV show. It's real."

And it comes from having a certain background, Grohl believes: "My stuff comes from keg parties and sweaty nightclubs and having the singer jump on top of your head during the chorus. That's why I'm so passionate about it. It's not because I won a TV contest and somebody gave me a million dollars. Music is a lot deeper."

With Foo Fighters concerts slated for Japan and Argentina in the coming months, Grohl likely won't be paying much "Idol" or "Voice" attention this time, either.  "If I have five seconds, I try to close my eyes and take a nap," he confirms. "That's the story of my life."

'American Idol': Reed Grimm's 'Family Matters' theme song a brilliant choice

http://www.youtube.com/v/P-p_mWuqP9g?version=3&hl=en_US

We've made no secret of the fact over the years that we want "American Idol" to do a TV show theme song night. (What? Like that'd be any worse than some of the other "themes" they've done over the years. Remember when they did "songs Gwen Stefani has, like, heard on the radio ever" theme night?).

So we got a little bit of our wish when Reed Grimm auditioned with the theme song from "Family Matters." We love the weird scatting Casey Abrams thing he has going on, plus he's super adorable.

The judges were also impressed. Steven called him "crazy" and "genius," while J.Lo said, "The mark of a great performer is you never know what they're gonna do ... and you have that."

'American Idol': Eben Franckewitz's 'Ain't No Sunshine' and his cuteness

http://www.youtube.com/v/WccMpm7ZjHA?version=3&hl=en_US

Eben Franckewitz is the latest 15-year-old to grace the "American Idol" seal for auditions. He's cute as a bug in a rug and he brought with him his equally cute and super supportive parents, which is wonderful. Everyone should be so lucky as to have parents like that.

For his audition, he tore up some "Ain't No Sunshine" and our only quibble was that he didn't get to sing longer. We wanted him to get to the "And I know, I know, I know ... leave the young thing alone." But anyway, it was wonderful.

Jennifer said of the audition, "Some people just have it, some people are just born to do it. I think that's you" and Randy praised his "Natural, God-given gift that is pretty amazing and spot-on."

'American Idol': Erika Van Pelt's smoky alto impresses everyone

http://www.youtube.com/v/JMXQPMJFSiU?version=3&hl=en_US

Sure, it's impressive to see 15- and 16-year-olds have these massive voices and talent. But we also like some of the 25+ crowd who can bring it (and usually with more gravitas). Case in point: Erika Van Pelt, who auditioned for "American Idol" with Carole King's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?"

It was gorgeous. Erika has more than a little Carole King in her voice and we agree with Randy when he said, "This is how you do it. I love that you got this low alto, this low tone. Oh my god, all the turns, the phrases."

J.Lo and Steven also liked her whole persona. Steven called her "very sexy, very sure of yourself" and J.Lo added, "The voice matches her and it kind of all works together."

We hope to see a lot more of her moving forward.

'American Idol': Hallie Day recovers from suicide attempt to turn her life around

http://www.youtube.com/v/8ZwEg9kL_hU?version=3&hl=en_US

Hallie Day and her story of overcoming addiction and a suicide attempt was saved for the last audition on Thursday's (Jan. 19) "American Idol." We think it's great that she was able to turn her life around and we thought she had a nice voice.

However. We didn't love her choice of "I Will Survive." When Steven Tyler actually asked for something else, we agreed with him, but she didn't have to sing anything else because everybody acted like Steven was being crazy. It just seemed a little forced to us.

J.Lo and Randy were all, "Really?" and "You haven't made up your mind that she's amazing?!" He covered by saying he likes watching her when she sings, but we kind of agreed with him. But she's good and deserved to go through.

What did you think?

American Idol drew a 6.4 adults 18-49 rating last night. That’s down from 13.5% from last week’s two-hour premiere and down a fairly massive 30% from the equivalent Wednesday telecast a year ago (a two-hour version) that averaged a 9.2 adults 18-49 rating and 25.37 million viewers. Fox still easily won Wednesday night though with both total viewers and adults 18-49.

Jenni Schick – 24 – Sterling, VA – Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar – Well, Jenni sure is PERKY. She’s yet one more female contestant who wants to get it ON with Steven Tyler. “I’ll take this one,” he says.  OK. We get the shtick. Now can we stop it? Her vocals are shouty and unfocussed.  Her mannerisms are super annoying.  She teaches music to kids. That’s a little scary.  In the end, she gets her kiss from Steven, and a ticket to Hollywood.

http://www.youtube.com/v/vb_DPdt6y1s?version=3&hl=en_US

Curtis Grey – 28 – Spring Hill FL – “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday” by Boyz II Men – Curtis, who sings in church and  plays in a 5 piece band, is one of the best of the night, but that’s not saying much.  He’s got a nice tone, but his phrasing is terrible and he’s kind of boring. Jlo thinks he’s really good looking, but I’m not seeing any star quality.  Curtis could have used a little constructive criticism, but the judges praise him effusively and send him on to Hollywood.

Richie Law – 19 – Centennial CO, Devan Jones – 26 – Aurora CA – and Mathenne Trego - 25 - Centennial CO - Next is a montage of a few half-decent voices.  Richie Law is Scotty McCreery 2.0.  He doesn’t stand a chance. Devan Jones has a very smooth falsetto. I would have liked to hear more from him. Mathenne Trego is very soulful, but looks like he could annoy pretty quick.

http://www.youtube.com/v/jG4oXgarAbI?version=3&hl=en_US

Tealana Hedgespeth – 19 – Loveland CO – Bring Me Some Water by Melissa Etheridge – This was pretty tragic.  The saddest auditions are the bad auditioners  who genuinely believe they have talent. Tealana has a twin sister who she feels super-inferior to by comparison. Her lack of confidence makes her toneless singing even sadder. “If you ask her for another song,” Jlo whispers to Steven, “I’m going to kill you.”  They let her sing on and on without stopping her. It’s mean.  They won’t tell her right out that she’s talentless. “The singing’s not there yet,” says Randy. YET?  I wonder if her twin can sing?

Haley Smith – 18 – Orem UT – Tell Me Something Good by Chaka Khan – Hippy Dippy! Haley lives in a log cabin and is a vegetarian. Natch. She works in a meat factory? Hm.  She’s our token Aspen hippie, our Haley is.  She busts out some Chaka Khan, and while her style is unique I found her tone really really shrill. Steven loves her. LOVES HER.  “I’m honored to be here listening to your voice,” he says. Randy says she put her own flower child spin on Chaka.  She probably sounds better with a band or singing her own music.  I just wish her vocals were a little warmer.

http://www.youtube.com/v/8Dil98O1El8?version=3&hl=en_US

Shelby Tweten – 17 – North Mankato, MN – Temporary Home by Carrie Underwood – Here’s the big backstory of the night. Shelby has recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She says, “American Idol is the only thing keeping me on my meds.”  Singing helps alleviate her symptoms.  Her vocals are pretty, but unremarkable. And I’m not hearing much authentic country in there.  The judges over praise her, “I’ve got tears in my eyes,” says Jlo. I can’t help but wonder if the judges are touched by Shelby’s backstory, rather than her singing.  Big, huge yes to Hollywood.

http://www.youtube.com/v/QYtdQ6X1C9o?version=3&hl=en_US

Magic Cyclops – Davenport IA – And so the Aspen auditions close with a joke contestant.  A comedian of an “undetermined age” whom I’m sure the producers found and planted for the yucks.  Yes, this is the way we say goodbye to Aspen–with an idiot dressed like a hippie talking in a horrible fake English accent. Dude is like a low rent Russell Brand. The conceit is that he’s from Iowa, but has a British accent. Or something.   Actually,  Magic was the perfect ending to a terrible show.  If these contestants were the best of the 31, Aspen is in trouble.

TexasLady, Well, I have top 24 of American Idol Spoiler. Yes or No?

‘American Idol’ recap: Got Any Aspen? – Welcome to Colorado — a wonderfully placid landscape in which many species thrive — bull testes on plates, cows, the “frightening and homeless,” and a person whose job is to shake dirty fake snow over Ryan Seacrest. At least that guy probably doesn’t have a twin brother who specializes in shimmering sleet. But if he had, and if he’d done a weepy confessional including the line “I’ve spent my whole life living in the shadow of his saltshaker figure,” this episode might have been a lot more compelling. – Entertainment Weekly

American Idol Aspen Auditions Recap: Escape to Pitch Mountain – Quick! What did you have for lunch on the second Tuesday of January 2012? If the best you can come up with is “urrmm, a sandwich?” or “something I reheated in a Tupperware dish, maybe with sauce?”, chances are that in a few weeks’ time, you’ll be having similar recall problems regarding American Idol‘s exceedingly pedestrian Aspen audition episode. – TV Line

‘American Idol,’ Season 11, Episode 4, Aspen: TV Recap – A little rock music for the Rocky Mountains of Aspen as “American Idol” auditions continued tonight.
It’s hard to say what was more exciting for a 24-year-old music teacher: kissing Steven Tyler on the lips or getting a golden ticket to Hollywood. Jenny Schick might consider easing up on the caffeine, but she rocked “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar and not just Steven loved it. – Wall Street Journal

‘American Idol’ recap: season 11, audition city #4 Denver/Aspen – Aspen is a beautiful, scenic town. The talent? Not so beautiful. At least for us viewers. Sure, we heard nine folks who made it through but I’m not sure if any of them will make it to the final 24. (Thirty one got Hollywood tickets, the fewest so far of the four cities we’ve seen.) Nobody really impressed me though I wouldn’t mind hearing more of Jenni Schick and Devan Jones. – Atlanta Journal Constitution

‘American Idol’ Season 11 Aspen Auditions: High and Mostly Dry – Do these people know or care what they’re auditioning for anymore? That’s what I thought while watching Iowa’s bizarre Magic Cyclops, who spoke like a member of Spinal Tap and looked like a cross between Axl Rose and Slash and had an accent as phony as Madonna’s (learned from watching the BBC on PBS, as his explanation went). He sent Randy Jackson straight to the latrine. – Hollywood Reporter

‘Idol’ in Aspen: Magic Cyclops & Glitter Queens & Sausages, Oh My! – For several episodes now, “American Idol” viewers have whined and moaned that Season 11 has been too light on “crazy” auditions. Where are all the William Hungs, Larry Platts, and Norman Gentles this season? Well, rubbernecking trainwreck-lovers in TV land had their prayers answered during Wednesday’s Aspen episode, in the form of an air-guitaring rock ‘n’ roll messiah named Magic Cyclops. The guy was like the “Idol” version of Andrew WK, and he came to party hard indeed. Everything that came out of this dude’s mouth–other than his singing, of course, which was admittedly awful–was pure television gold. The guy practically out-Tylered Steven Tyler, he was so nutty. And so awesome. – Yahoo Music

Aspen Auditions – American Idol Aspen brought us our first two good freaks of the season on Idol. Tonight we met Magic Cyclops, the Sp?nal Tap-style singer in sunglasses and a bandanna who claimed to speak with a British accent because growing up he was so poor his parents could only afford PBS. I got a kick out of Cyclops (not to mention the fact that Jennifer Lopez seemed to catch onto his jokes a lot quicker than Randy did) and wasn’t very surprised to find out that in his spare time he’s more than just a guy looking for his 15 minutes of fame. – AV Club

American Idol 11 Auditions: Catch some ZZZZs in Asspen – Does anyone know why American Idol held auditions in Apsen this year? It’s not as if anything actually happens in Aspen and Jennifer Lopez doesn’t do cold weather. Hell, I can’t even imagine Randy Jackson donning North Face unless Mariah or Journey told him to do it for a video. Steven Tyler would have to wear layers — not just 3 silk animal-print scarves. Those don’t count. Nah, Steven Tyler would have to get bundled up to go to the mountains. Even Ryan Seacrest looks out-of-place in that dark grey winter coat, as nice as it is, he just looks like he’s about do to some on-the-spot guidance at a cassette tape factory outside Pyongyang.- Top Idol Blog

Hollywood Week Begins Tonight on “American Idol”

DON’T MISS SOME OF THE MOST DRAMATIC AND CHALLENGING

EPISODES IN “AMERICAN IDOL” HISTORY

BEGINNING TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8;

AND CONTINUING THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9;

AND WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15 ON FOX

Contestants Battle it Out During the Performance Challenge Thursday, Feb. 16;

Top Semifinalists to be Revealed on Wednesday, Feb. 22 and Thursday, Feb. 23

Over 300 contestants made it to Hollywood and only 70 will survive Hollywood Week — the most challenging week of their lives. The contestants are pushed to their limits and ambulances are called to the scene as some faint, vomit and even fall off the stage. Randy, Jennifer and Steven put the contestants to the test as they reveal whom they believe have what it takes to be the next AMERICAN IDOL. The not-to-be-missed Hollywood Week kicks off tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 8 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) and continues Thursday, Feb. 9 (8:00-9:00 PM ET /PT) and Wednesday, Feb. 15 (8:00-10:00 PM ET /PT) on FOX.

Throughout the Hollywood rounds, the contestants will face intense challenges, completely different from what they encountered during auditions. They’ll sing solo, perform in groups for the judges and then sing on a huge stage, as they compete against each other to remain on the show. Who will make it and who will be sent home? See what happens when emotions run high, lyrics are lost and tears are shed.

Those who survive Hollywood will embark on an adventure of a lifetime as they head to Las Vegas for the Performance Challenge on stage in Cirque du Soleil’s Viva ELVIS Theatre at Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Some will shine, while others will crack under the pressure on a special two-hour episode Thursday, Feb. 16 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

The following week, contestants will take the stage one last time and sing for their lives to prove they deserve to make it to the next round. For some, it’s the end of the road, but for those who make it, it will be the start of an incredible journey. The second phase of the competition comes to a dramatic end when Randy, Jennifer and Steven reveal this season’s semifinalists Wednesday, Feb. 22 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Feb. 23 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

Some of  the singers I'm watching tonight who stood out for me in Las Vegas"

Boys:

Reed Grimm He draws your eye to him even singing in a group. He changed up his song with 30 minutes to prepare, decided to  use the drums as his instrument and pulled it off magnificently. Is he the best singer? I don't know but I think he will make it to the top 12.

Heejun Han: Hilarious with his dry wit and he can sing!

Phil Phillips: He's good!

Girls:

Jen Hirsh I loved her version of Georgia on my mind! Just beautiful!

Brielle Von Hugel :
16 years old, BIG voice!

Skyler Laine I hope  she makes it to top 12.

http://www.mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-11-the-top-13-boys-top-24-recap-and-videos.htm

Reed Grimm – “Moves Like Jagger” By Maroon 5 –  Ellsworth WI is famous for their cheese curds. Yum? He’s a nanny to his sister’s kids. Er. Not really digging the cheesy “smooth jazz” version of “Moves Like Jagger”. There’s nothing relevant about this arrangement at all. It’s like dentist office music.  Except the part where he sang “****” and it was bleeped.  Once again, Reed gets behind the drums for part of the song. It’s beginning to look like shtick.  A disappointing performance. Reed is turning into a one trick pony. Ugh the judging hasn’t improved at all this year.  Randy called him a very musical guy. Jennifer thought it was a great way to show America what we are dealing with.  “Beautiful” says Stephen.  Don’t indulge him, judges -  Reed may not get through on viewer votes–especially since he went first.  If he doesn’t–the judges will wildcard him. – 1-866-436-5701

http://www.youtube.com/v/KXddtWg5ilQ?version=3&hl=en_GB

Adam Brock – “Think” By Aretha Franklin – Adam calls himself a “renaissance man”, “a large black woman in a man’s body” and “white chocolate”.   One more Idol version of “Think”? Not really something we needed.  He reminds me a lot of Danny Gokey.  Oh look, he’s wearing a terrible towel in his back pocket. Representing for Pittsburgh. That’s nice.  I needed something to distract me from that boring and uninspired performance. “Setting the bar high right of the box,” says Steven, before he pimps the season, “We got such talent coming right out of the box…That was brilliant” Really, the gushing is overkill.    1-866-436-5702

http://www.youtube.com/v/ckk1uEZXDa4?version=3&hl=en_GB

Deandre Brackensick – “Reasons” by Earth Wind and Fire – Hm. This is NOT a great song choice. Falsetto is tricky–unless it’s stellar, it’s really unpleasant to listen to.  And here, Deandre’s voice is really weak and off pitch.  He hits a nice note at the end. But that’s the point–a little goes a long way! If he’d sung in full voice, with a few bars of falsetto and then the killer high note? That would have been a moment.  That performance was a bunch of meh with a few good moments.  Ugh. I want to mute the judges. They are added nothing.  Steven is still overusing the word “Beautiful”.  Jennifer calls his voice “Perfect”. NO IT’S NOT. Randy says, “You’re ready to go now.” He calls him relevant, yet compares him to Maxwell (90s) and Philip Baily (7o’s) Randy is such a dope.  1-866-436-5703

http://www.youtube.com/v/ZQt20_PjWcE?version=3&hl=en_GB

Colton Dixon – “Decode” by Paramore – I hate to be superficial? But Colton’s hair is really stupid. Plz get rid of that ridiculous skunk stripe. Oh. Look at Colton’s GIANT house. The Dixon’s are not hurting.  Colton says he’s going to change it up a bit.  “People are used to seeing me at a piano”.  Except he begins his performance sitting at one.  “I may shock a few people,” he says. Oh, so he gets up and works the stage, flirts with the girls in the front row, and jumps up and down on the piano.  What’s so shocking about that?  If Nigel takes away his piano, Colton may have a problem.  The camera cuts to Jlo who’s got a look on her face like she’s about to poop.  Eh. Colton is really a poor man’s David Cook. Randy says, “It’s about time on Idol that we have our own little indie alt rock singer like Paramore dude.” Yeah…because we’ve never had that before.  Jlo calls him a “relevant artist” and she can hear him on the radio “right now.”  I can hear him on Adult Contemporary, and that’s about it.   1-866-436-5704

http://www.youtube.com/v/iPsxBBDP1-I?version=3&hl=en_GB

Jeremy Rosado – “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles – Supposedly, Jeremy is the resident nice guy, always helping out and supporting his fellow contestants. Aw. His co-workers call him “Jer Bear”.  Well. This is very sincere.  He feels what he’s singing. But his vocals aren’t spectacular.  He lacks star quality. Whoa that high note was pitchy! I wasn’t feeling that, dawg. Yet, the judges gush over him. Really they should be picking apart these performances in a constructive way. Instead, they are yammering on about how nice he is.  Randy continues to pimp the season “We got some crazy SANGERS on the show this season,” he says, “I was so impressed…I love you man.”  1-866-436-5705

Aaron Marcellus – “Never Can Say Goodbye” by Jackson 5 – Marcellus tap dances. If Idol doesn’t work out, he can audition for SYTYCD.  He’s got a really nice voice.  I’m not feeling this song choice though. I wish he would have tackled something more contemporary.  He’s awkward,  working the stage.  A great performer won’t let you take your eyes off him. Marcellus has talent, but lacks that kind of star quality.  The last note he hits is super screechy. The judges actually give him a standing ovation. It was not THAT good.  Randy calls him an old school veteran. “I’ve always believed in you,” says Jennifer. “You’re the whole package,” says Steven.   1-866-436-5706

Chase Likens “Storm Warning” by Hunter Hays – That’s nice. We learn a little bit about Chase’s life in West Virginia. A place he’ll be headed back to when he’s eliminated on Thursday. Poor dude didn’t stand a chance with little to no screen time. His singing isn’t half bad.  Chase picked a song from a young country singer.  It’s a good choice for him.  He’s got a nice tone, but his vocals are generic and slightly under pitch.  It helps that he’s a good looking guy, but not much. The judges even gush over cannon fodder! Steven compares Chase to Brendan Frasier. Remember him? “You’ve grown so much through the competition,” says Jlo, “I look forward to seeing where you go.” That would be home, Jennifer.  1-866-436-5707

http://www.youtube.com/v/_-iA1EtCVk4?version=3&hl=en_GB

Creighton Fraker – “True Colors” – by Cyndi Lauper – Creighton says he grew up a preacher’s kid in small town South Dakota. He didn’t exactly “fit in” there, so he moved to NYC. “I’m Creighton Fraker,” he says, “You have to be who you are.”  And the person he is, is someone who never met a song he couldn’t over-sing.  He begins “True Colors” with some restraint, but that doesn’t last long. By the end of the performance he’s all over the place with scary runs and high notes.  Dude. You are not Sam Harris. This is not Star Search.  Jennifer has no idea how America is going to choose with so many great voices! She doesn’t want Creighton to go home. Too bad, Jen I think he is.  “Stupendous,” says Steven. “You took that song and put it over the top.” Well, that’s one way of putting it.   – 1-866-436-5708

http://www.youtube.com/v/96CEXSTwLgg?version=3&hl=en_GB

Phillip Phillips – “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins – Phillip loves his family, even if his parents couldn’t think up a first name for him. Poor P2.  I stopped feeling sorry for him pretty quickly, though. I don’t like all of Phil’s performances, but I like this one a lot–mostly on the strength of the arrangement. Yep. He’s got his guitar with him. But he is not overshadowed by the band and back up singers like I thought he might be. He puts his gravelly voice to good use, plugging into the passion of the song.  Phil is so going to SAIL into the Top 13 on Thursday. He’s a contender.  Jlo and Steven gush–and finally it’s justified. Jlo compares him to Lauren and Scotty in terms of somebody she noticed right away.  It took 7 performances, but finally, Randy CRITICIZES  a performance. A little. Basically, he didn’t like the re-arrangement, but still “loves it.”-  1-866-436-5709

http://www.youtube.com/v/8vkRejuHd3o?version=3&hl=en_GB

Eben Franckewitz – “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele – This kid is sooo young. Way too young. The Adele song is a really unfortunate choice. Not only is it too mature, but it’s also way too big for him. His performance is horribly off pitch–you can tell the kid is nervous–and just a hot mess all around.  This is what you get when you take a kid, straight from his Ohio high school to a big Hollywood soundstage to sing live in front of millions of people.  You’re going to watch a young boy choke on TV, and it’s not pretty.  Eben will be heading back to class, where he belongs shortly.  The judges go easy on him. They point out his pitchiness, but call him a “great performer.” Hm.  Steven tells him to listen to blues records, for whatever that’s worth.  – 1-866-436-5710

http://www.youtube.com/v/KxtXIDAcnTM?version=3&hl=en_GB

Heejun Han – “Angels” by Robbie Williams -  Oh how I love the comedy stylings of Heejun. Which is why I really really really want to like his singing, but this isn’t good. The boy has good tone, but his diction and phrasing need lots of work. He also has trouble staying on pitch. He’s a mediocre singer, but I still hope he makes the Top 13 because he’s so amusing.  His mom, whom Heejun films dancing and singing around their Flushing house is super adorable too.  Heejun will probably advance anyway. If he doesn’t he’ll get picked for the wild card, so I’m not worried. The judges blame his problems on his song choice. – 1-866-436-5711

http://www.youtube.com/v/S-tJ2UNdXMk?version=3&hl=en_GB

Joshua Ledet – “You Pulled Me Through ” by Jennifer Hudson – The second great performance of the night is from Joshua Ledet who totally takes the room to church with a passionate and assured performance of “You Pulled Me Through” .  I love his raspy tone. There’s no oversinging here–he’s pure emotion, every note has the right inflection.  I’m really going to be mad if he doesn’t make the Top 13.  The room gives him a well-deserved standing ovation. “Can I get an Amen up in here,” says Randy. The doors of the church are wide open. This is what singing is all about.”  Jennifer says she wants to punch him he’s so talented. OK!  1-866-436-5712

http://www.youtube.com/v/IluWhkyojss?version=3&hl=en_GB

Jermaine Jones – “Dance With My Father” by Luther Vandross -  Performing the sentimental “Dance with My Father” combined with the pimp spot will likely land Jermaine in the Top 13, although the performance itself was pretty ordinary.  I like the texture of Jermaine’s voice, but he’s uneven and has way too much vibrato. I did not enjoy that at all.  Randy inexplicably says that it’s about time that Idol has a bass in the competition. Well, that kid who won Idol last year has a pretty deep voice, doesn’t he? Meh. I really could have done without this particular ratings gimmick. 1-866-436-5736

TV rating:

Idol’s 5.0 adults 18-49 rating was a tenth below last Wednesday’s Idol telecast (but continues well below last season’s ratings), expect that typical finals adjustments will eliminate that gap.

Is it me, or were the Top 13 guys' performances boring as a whole? I don't think I'm in agreement with the judges, Randy calling it a hot night and with every contestant getting compliments. I can't even remember what the first half of the guys did. The only performance that stood out for me was Joshua Ledet's. No wonder they placed him last. Colton, Chase, Jeremy, Phillip and Jermaine's performances were alright. The rest were plain forgettable, IMO.

Based on performance and/or personality, I'm guessing that the five guys getting through on viewers' votes are Joshua, Jermaine, Eben (because he's a young, adorable boy who'll probably get lots of females' votes)... And perhaps Colton and Phillip? I'm uncertain about the latter two, but I'm hoping that Phillip gets through.

I have a feeling too that we will have 7 guys in the Top 13 this year. Maybe two of Adam, Aaron or Jeremy will round up the guys. Hmm.

Then again I can't say for sure who's going through, 'cos truth is, most of their performances were mediocre for me.

I feel that there were more bad performances with the girls than with the guys, but overall, the girls definitely outsang the guys. There were more outstanding, memorable performances with them than with the guys. So I hope that there'll be more girls put into the Top 13, hmm.

Having said that, my pick for the Top 6 girls are Jessica, Hollie, Elise, Skylar... Hopefully Shannon and Erika, but I'm uncertain about these two. Jen might be in.

Can't wait for the results. Whatever decision America makes is out of our control, but I hope that the judges make wise picks for the Wild Cards.

Joshua Ledet's version of You Pulled Me Through was good.. with a few flaws where his low pitch was off but his high notes were perfect!

But it's also thanks to Jennifer's awesome song.

Heejun Han's version of Angels was really mediocre. He needs to loosen up and I believe sometimes he cannot hit the high notes.

But he's got a really nice and clear voice. Here's hoping that the asian will do well in this competition.

http://www.mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-11-the-top-12-girls-top-24-recap-videos-and-photos.htm

Chelsea Sorrell – “Cowboy Casanova” by Carrie Underwood – Chelsea is a solid singer, but she comes off karaoke, which can be  a big problem for contestants who cover contemporary songs in the genre they sing.   Chelsea’s version was decent, but through her entire performance I’m  thinking “Carrie’s version is so much better.”  Being the first to perform makes her totally forgettable. Randy says, “You definitely can sing.” But what’s that? Is he actually critiquing her?  He questions her song choice, because the “Carrie thing” is something she’s done before. “You have to separate yourself out.” Why yes. It is an actually critique!  Jennifer calls her nasally. Where were these critiques with the guys last night? Steven tells her to watch her phrasing and timing -  1-866-436-5701

http://www.youtube.com/v/5Zluz9BhPzA?version=3&hl=en_US

Erika Van Pelt – “What About Love” by Heart – Now, THIS is how you sing a song and NOT sound karaoke. I’ve been in love with Erika’s throaty alto since her audition.  She’s got a great sound, great phrasing and she sings with confidence.  She’s cut back on the runs in this song, and it’s perfect.  Jennifer thought she was holding back, but I disagree. You don’t need a song full of vocal gymnastics to give a compelling passionate performance. I hope the viewers vote for her. Steven says her confidence “breaths wings” into her performance.  Jennifer tells her to “let loose on us.”  Randy says she  shows confidence with restraint, but then stupidly compares her to Adele.  He’s never heard of a singing DJ. Oh, Randy.  1-866-436-5702

http://www.youtube.com/v/-Qs0V1D8zCg?version=3&hl=en_US

Jen Hirsh – “One and Only” by Adele – I liked most of Jen’s Hollywood performances, but I’m not feeling this at all. She was underpitch through much of it and was straining on the high notes.  But I could have forgiven some pitchiness if she made me feel something when she sang. Jen was going through the motions, but I just didn’t get it.  Jennifer says she’s the first person to come out and let loose a little bit (except…Erika was way better). Steven said she had a little trouble with “the last little bitty thing”, but he liked it.  Randy appreciates her “swag.” Randy thinks she’s one of the best singers in the competition. -  1-866-436-5703

http://www.youtube.com/v/_7-xrFMxYio?version=3&hl=en_US

Brielle Von Hugel “Sitting on the Dock of The Bay” by Otis Redding – Wow. That was….interesting. First, Brielle doesn’t have the emotional chops to sing Otis. Her performance was mannered and silly–like a little girl dressed up in her momma’s clothes singing into a pretend microphone. She hit a few clunkers in there too, and her phrasing is just really really weird. Imagine my shock when the judges gave her a big ole giant tongue bath. Steven tells her she’s got a great sense of the  blues.  Jlo calls her a “true performer” and “amazing”.  Randy compares her to Janis Joplin. Uhm. NO.  I think America will see through that. They also haven’t forgotten her Hollywood bitch edit, so I don’t expect her to advance. -  1-866-436-5704

http://www.youtube.com/v/D8Px16Yg-Rg?version=3&hl=en_US

Hallie Day – “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone – Thanks to Jennifer Hudson’s ubiquitous Weight Watchers ads, this song is pretty played out, so I was surprised by my NOT hating on Hallie’s version. She’s got a powerful voice and manged to put a fresh spin on the tune.  I’d really like to hear her tackle something contemporary, but I still found it weird when Randy suddenly began picking on her.  “What kind of artist do  you want to be…where do you see yourself.” Really Randy?  All she wants to do is sing soul. Randy inexplicably name checks Lana Del Ray while he’s at it. Seriously, he throws bull**** like a monkey flinging his own poop. Silly. “You look like a star,” says Jennifer.  Steven likes her old-timey voice. He name checks Adele. Stop!  1-866-436-5705

http://www.youtube.com/v/16Ghso0fZic?version=3&hl=en_US

Skyler Laine – “Stay With Me” by Faces – Isn’t young Skyler the smart one–NOT singing a country song. Instead, she picks a bluesy ballsy rock song from Rod Stewart. That’s how you avoid being called karaoke in a competition.  Skyler has a ton of spunk and the Reba growl down pat. Even if another one of the country girls makes it through to the Top 13, she can claim her own niche–the country girl who rocks. Again. Very very smart.  Randy calls her the “rocking country girl” and a mixture of Reba, Kelly Clarkson and Tina Turner. Hm.  Randy can’t resist name dropping–he recorded the tune a couple years ago with Travis Tritt. Jennifer says Skyler is a “natural born performer.” “You’re a pistol,” says Steven.  1-866-436-5706

Baylie Brown – “Amaze” by Lonestar – Whoa. I called Baylie as a shoe-in for the Top 13, but unfortunately she totally choked in front of a live audience. It was like she was singing in slow motion. Even the key change was boring.  She was also super off-pitch. I was not expecting her to tank like that. Steven tells her he doesn’t think it was the best song she could have picked for tonight. YA THINK? “I’ve heard you sing better.”  Jennifer didn’t think she had control through the song. Randy agreed. The judges kept telling her she looked great. Code for “you sucked.”  Baylie admits she was really nervous. “I don’t think I did too awful for it.” Hm. Baylie. It was as bad as your grammar right there.  1-866-436-5707

http://www.youtube.com/v/49aN4oAANAc?version=3&hl=en_US

Hollie Cavanagh – “Reflection” by Christina Aguilera -  Hollie has a big, powerful old fashioned voice. But I’m getting shades of Pia Toscano here, who was impressive initially, but didn’t really move past those big belty ballads.  I could see Hollie possibly moving to the Top 13, but she won’t last long if she doesn’t show some versatility.  She was a little flat on some of her notes and didn’t quite hit the high note.  I think she should have sat out another year or two before she came back to Idol because her vocal also lacks a certain emotional resonance maturity would bring. Steven thought it was perfect. Jennifer thinks she could win it.  Randy making “doo doo” jokes.   Randy thought she needed to let loose a little bit -  1-866-436-5708

http://www.youtube.com/v/H-9c9hQJG70?version=3&hl=en_US

Haley Johnsen – “Sweet Dreams” by Eurythmics – When I saw this song spoiler earlier today, I thought it would either be a stroke of genius or a hot mess. Unfortunately for Haley, it was the latter.  It started off interestingly in her lower register, but then it quickly went off the rails.  She needed to keep it simple, but intense. Instead, she threw in mess of off key runs and riffs. It’s too bad, because I sense some originality in there, but we’ll never know, because she’s definitely going home tomorrow.  Jennifer says she has great skills, but the song wasn’t a good choice.  Steven said she pulled it through even if it wasn’t perfect. Randy channeled Simon. “How do I say this? It was a bit of a nightmare instead of a dream.” OUCH. “This song was a little trainwrecky for me today.” 1-866-436-5709

[flash=560,315]http://www.youtube.com/v/L4qmZXEL6a0?version=3&hl=en_US

Shannon Magrane – “Go Light Your World” by Kathy Troccoli -  Shannon sounds like Debby Boone circa 1977 and that’s not a good thing. I wonder how many times she’s sung this song at weddings, school recitals and the like.  This performance is really really boring.  Shannon’s got the raw materials, but none of the personality, star quality or emotional depth to pull it off.  Inexplicably, the judges praise her. “You’ve got so much promise,” says Randy. “I’m so impressed.”  He’s comparing her to Lauren Hill? Randy is nuts. Jennifer says she got her first “goosies” of the night. WTF? “My reality check bounced,” says Steven, “You took it upstairs and it went beautiful.  My reality check bounced too–was I listening to the same performance as the judges? -  1-866-436-5710

http://www.youtube.com/v/4jnH-t-b_D0?version=3&hl=en_US

Jessica Sanchez – “Love You I Do” (Dreamgirls) by Jennifer Hudson – We see footage of Jessica crying earlier in the week when her voice gave out.  But when she hit the stage, you’d never know it.  She channels Jhud just a bit, but puts enough of a spin on the song to make it her own. Her style is very mature and assured, like a kid who has been singing all her sixteen years–which is exactly what she is. Chick is sailing right into the Top 13.  Major standing O from the audience and the judges.  “That girl can really sing…one of the best of the last two nights,” says Randy.  “So beyond your years,” says Jennifer. “You’ve got exceptional timing,” says Steven. Randy compares her to Beyonce. At least it wasn’t Adele. – 1-866-436-5711

http://www.youtube.com/v/_CE1QZVftTU?version=3&hl=en_US[/flash]

Elise Testone – “One and Only” by Adele – Elise sang the same song as Jen Hirsh. The difference is that I really heard and felt the words as  Elise sang. She began playing at the piano, but eventually got up–the better to lay it all out on the stage for us. I love pretty much every thing about this girl–her tone, her phrasing, her  little vocal embellishments.  I can’t imagine that she won’t advance to the Top 13.  “You blew it out of the water,” says Steven, “From the heart, bluesy.”  She admitted that her voice cracked a little because she got emotional. “I hope America gets you,” says Jennifer.  “It wasn’t your best performance that we’ve seen,” says Randy, “It was still great.”  -  1-866-436-5712

American Idol 11 Spoilers – Next Weeks Theme Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston?

The themes for the males and females will be Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston, respectively.

It actually would have been more interesting to have the boys sing Whitney and the girls sing Stevie..

So there're really 7 guys in the Top 13. I don't get the hype on DeAndre. But it's alright, 'cos I feel that America got the Top 10 absolutely right. Other than Heejun, who didn't deliver as well. But I feel that he's got a good voice and if he picks the right song he could do well, so even that's okay with me. There were people like Shannon, Colton, Phillip that I thought deserved a spot but wasn't sure that they'd get the votes, but they still got in. So all I can say is kudos to America for making such a wonderful decision!

Judges' wild card picks... The Top 10 was already marvellous, so I wasn't expecting much for the wild cards. The only person I hoped would get in was Erika (which thankfully she did), and I didn't care about the rest. I felt that they should have given the wild card chance to Hallie Day instead of Brielle. But oh well. Overall, I'm happy with the results.

Now I just hope for the rest of the season that America continues to vote wisely, and if there's still a judges' Save, that they won't use it rashly. Of course, I hope for a female winner this season.

And the finals kick off!

I thought it was a great night overall. Most of them delivered. I agree with Jennifer that the girls outsang the guys tonight. But sad to say, the poor performances came from the girls as well... Much as I really don't want it to happen, I'm pretty sure a girl will leave tomorrow night. Especially since the power goes to the judges. The only guys I can think of who will be in trouble are Jermaine and Jeremy. The girls whom I think will be in trouble are Elise and Shannon. If either of these girls are up against either of the guys, I'm sure that the judges will save one of the guys. Sigh.

Having said that, my favourite performances of the night are by Jessica, Hollie and Erika. Joshua was terrific, but I feel that he won't have much left to show America after a few episodes. My guess is that Colton and Phillip will be the last two guys standing. And I hope that Jessica, Hollie, Erika and Skylar round up our Final 6. Well I HOPE.

Bottom four performances - Shannon, Elise, Jermaine, Jeremy. These four just didn't impress. I'm guessing that Shannon will be eliminated tomorrow night, because she really didn't do well for her song. =(

I agree with you Ruth, I think Shannon will be the one to leave. It's a shame too because for whatever reason, her music was too low for her range. I don't know why they do this to the singers but they do and have for years.

Joshua Ledet – “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder – Joshua says the tune is completely out of his comfort zone. Producer Erick Hudson came in to show Joshua how the song could pop with a gospel feel. If Joshua was feeling out of his element, it sure didn’t show. He owned that stage. I really love his gritty, raspy gospel tone. I’m a little worried that going first will hurt him with voters. Randy: “You come out rockin. You just showed us you can do anything…flawless”. Jennifer: “I felt your performance. The music isn’t just coming out of your mouth. Mary gave you great direction on how to punch that chorus.” Steven: “You keep getting better and better. Beautiful.” – 1-866-436-5701

http://www.youtube.com/v/Trayt-40ytA?version=3&hl=en_GB

Elise Testone- “I’m Your Baby Tonight” by Whitney Houston – Elise was set to sing “Greatest Love of All,” But Mary and Jimmy didn’t feel it was the right song for her. Jimmy suggests “I’m Your Baby Tonight”. Mary warns her that the timing has to be right. Elise feels uncomfortable with the feedback. Mary says it would be a shame if she crashed and burned. Everybody seems uneasy with the situation. Elise misses the timing almost immediately, but she eventually rights the ship, the rest of the song is solid and bluesy. I really like her growl. The judges slam her. Jennifer: You have an amazing voice, I don’t’ think this is your best. Steven: “Your voice has so much character, you have to find just the right song.”. Randy: “It felt like you were boxing with the song. Sometimes it’s just nice to sit in the song. It wasn’t your best for me. That one wasn’t good.” Elise says she didn’t know the song at all. If she had a month with it, she could make it her own. Oh boy. She’s got a big stank face on as Ryan recites her digits. That’s not going to help. – 1-866-436-5702

http://www.youtube.com/v/HbVi2Kxycow?version=3&hl=en_GB

Jermaine Jones – “Knocks Me Off My Feet” – Mary says she’s feeling it. She gives Jermaine some advice on his phrasing. Jimmy loves the timbre of his voice and is so happy he’s back. They can’t believe he’s only 25. Jermaine has an interesting tone, but it’s weird and old fashioned. Jimmy really seems to love it. Some of Jermaine’s phrasing is operatic, which I find a little unsettling. He needs to smooth out a few of those rough edges. Steven: That song fits you like an Armani suit. Your voice fit the song beautifully.” Jennifer: “You are such a sweetheart! I would like to see you connect to the song. I see you concentrating on the notes. I need to feel like you are really singing to somebody.” Randy: “I love the verses, when you hit the chorus, I did not enjoy it. You changed up the melody and did your own little thing with it. Just relax and sit in it. The sound of your voice is different enough.” Wow. Jermaine TOWERS over Ryan! – 1-866-436-5703

http://www.youtube.com/v/NNtHE331iFk?version=3&hl=en_GB

Erika Van Pelt -”I Believe in You and Me” – Mary loves her tone, comparing it to steak and potatoes. They advise her not to try and sing like Whitney. They tell her to do her own style. Erika’s got such a beautiful, rich voice and so much confidence. She seems so comfortable on stage (in contrast to Elise) She takes the song up a notch on the second verse and it’s beautifully done. She hits a couple of sweet high notes, but she never over sings. Just lovely. This girl is an original. Randy: When you hit that out chorus and you just let yourself go, it was unbelievable. Let yourself go. Amazing by the end.” Jennifer: “The way you interpret songs with the tone, really makes songs come alive. I feel like you’re playing it a little safe.” Steven: “You’ve got a beautiful fantastic voice…it was perfect.” Ryan has dubbed Erika EVP. – 1-866-436-5704

http://www.youtube.com/v/C7rnue6hWmw?version=3&hl=en_GB

Colton Dixon – “Lately” – Jimmy says Stevie Wonder is not Colton’s wheelhouse. Jimmy asks Colton to do an original song, After listening for a bit to Colton’s angsty rock, Jimmy tells him to rely on his vulnerability. It’s not a great sign that Colton had to be told that. Oooh. Super pitchy at the top of the song. He picks up steam near the end with a big angsty finish. So, it’s the post-grunge-emo version of Stevie. For me, Colton’s vocals are on and off—he’s got pitch problems—but when he’s on he’s pretty good. Steven: “Colton that was outstanding. Well done.” Jennifer: “You were probably the most challenged tonight.” She felt his vulnerability come through. Randy: “It wasn’t picture perfect. The things that were most out of tune were the things with you singing soft and low. By the last 8 bars, you were flawless. You sang it like it was a Coldplay song…where did that falsetto come from? Well done” Ryan remarks on his smoldering eyes. A good eye f*ck can certainly bring in the votes. – 1-866-436-5705

http://www.youtube.com/v/CBF6YlcVAXM?version=3&hl=en_GB

Shannon Magrane – “I Have Nothing” – Mary says she can see her thinking. Don’t run to the big note, Mary says. Oh my. This is off pitch almost immediately. She misses the key change, and it’s all downhill from there. Wow. Kind of a trainwreck! Shannon is only 15. She has no style or experience. She’s completely out of her depth here. Jennifer: “Sweet baby, I think the thinking got the best of you. I know you are capable. Just tell the story. Relax.” Steven: “Your nerves got the best of you. It’s a huge song. You crashed and burned on the turn around.” Randy: “We know that you can sing that song. Everything you could go for, you didn’t quite hit.” Shannon admits she wasn’t really listening to the band. Well, there you go. She’s just too inexperienced. – 1-866-436-5706

Deandre Brackensick – “Master Blaster” – Mary gives Deandre some great advice on how to attack the song. Jimmy says he’s going to have to bring more than his pretty hair to the party. Whoa Deandre! There ain’t nothing wrong with your lower register dude. You need to show that off! And he is tonight. He’s got an awesome groove going and is working the stage like a pro. He’s using that falsetto, but sparingly. Deandre’s best so far. Steven: “You got that “male Naima” in you—a different flavor than everyone else. Like a Jamaican Patois.” Jennifer: “You have rhythm, soul, swagger. I thought you brought it from the beginning.” Randy: “You and Joshua showed two different sides of yourselves. You showed you can be the balladeer and do uptempos. Job well done.” – 1-866-436-5707

http://www.youtube.com/v/90ubj3i1aE8?version=3&hl=en_GB

Skylar Laine – “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” – Skylar says she never sang Whitney before. Mary tells Skylar to pull it back a bit so she has somewhere to take the song. Skylar countrifies the song and it works! I can hear this song on country radio, for reals. She hits a huge money note at the end. So she brings the big voice like Whitney, but with a country twang. Impressive. The crowd goes crazy. Jennifer thought the beginning was nasally, but eventually Skyler gave us the biggest note of the night. Steven: “You nailed it. That was fantastic.” Randy: “You’re a country girl, but you proved you can sing any song. That was hot.” – 1-866-436-5708

http://www.youtube.com/v/QrNOygRBYZg?version=3&hl=en_GB

Heejun Han – “All is Fair In Love” – We see some of Heejun’s “entertaining tweets”. Mary loves Heejun’s tone—she wasn’t expecting it. She wants him to give a teeny bit more. He brought gifts—a photo for Jimmy that said “I love you Jimmy” and one for Mary that said “I love you better than Jimmy” Ha. Jimmy says, “You’ve won me over.” Heejun has a lovely tone, but he could really use some voice lessons. Better diaphragm support would help him produce a fuller sound. And he needs help with his diction! He doesn’t enunciate well enough. He’s got potential and when he sings ballads, he really connects to the song. Jennifer: “I love you.” Steven: “I love your voice. Something about it that’s real special.” Randy: “It wasn’t perfect, but it was really good.” Not sure why they weren’t more constructive with Heejun. He could really benefit from some coaching. – 1-866-436-5709

http://www.youtube.com/v/2w9GoKGM0Eo?version=3&hl=en_GB

Hollie Cavanagh – “All The Man That I Need” – Mary said be comfortable with the song and sing what you feel. “Your voice is sick,” she says. That’s a mighty big voice coming out of such a tiny little girl. She’s got some amazing and impressive pipes. Hollie handled one of Whitney’s larger than life songs just fine. Randy: “Dude you nailed it.” Jennifer: “We might have a sing-off between two girls in the final. That’s what I’m hoping for. Steven: “You’ve been nailing it every time. That was really nice.”- 1-866-436-5710

http://www.youtube.com/v/UO6SVwCLYRg?version=3&hl=en_GB

Jeremy Rosado – “Ribbon in the Sky” – Jimmy tells Jeremy that he’s all up in his head right now. Jeremy knows he’s on the cusp here, and he’s very nervous. Alas, Jeremy’s performance is competent, but lackluster. I still think he’s total cannon fodder and a waste of a wild card spot. Steven: “Beautiful voice. Velvety high—great song, nice passion.” Jennifer: “I love to hear your interpretation of songs. That was really really beautiful.” Randy: “For me, it wasn’t your best song. This is a difficult song. It’s the kind of song that you have to put more swag in it in order to really make it believable.” Randy…keeping it real. Somebody has to. I think the other two were afraid of hurting Jeremy’s feelings. – 1-866-436-5711

http://www.youtube.com/v/8dC_ouz_3AY?version=3&hl=en_GB

Jessica Sanchez – “I Will Always Love You” – Jimmy calls Jessica out on her excessive vibrato. Jimmy and Mary both say that Jessica just nailed it. “Impeccable,” says Mary. Jessica nails all the notes, that’s for sure. But she doesn’t deviate much from Whitney’s version. As fantastic a voice as Jessica has, I want to hear her put her own spin on songs. Still, she tackled a really difficult tune that only a few Idol hopefuls have dared attempt. It was a pretty big risk. She gets a standing ovation. Randy: Give it all to her. Jessica Sanchez is legit. You are the best vocal of the night, and of this whole competition. This is one of the best talents in the whole country.” Jennifer: “Amazing. I don’t even know what to say.” Jlo is crying. Steven: “Jessica. You may be the one. You just made 40 million people cry.” (try more like 15 million, but whatevs). Whoa at Randy’s hyperbole. Early frontrunners rarely win on Idol. Maybe Jessica will be an exception. – 1-866-436-5712

http://www.youtube.com/v/ayYNAEs0few?version=3&hl=en_GB

Phillip Phillips – “Superstition” – Phil knows “Superstition” has been done many times on Idol, but he does not think it’s been done the way he’s going to do it. Jimmy says he’s a rare find of a great musician and great singer. The arrangement was decent, but I did not like Phillip’s vocal at all. It felt shouty and unmusical. I keep waiting for him to Hawk up a loogie. . Sorta gross. Jennfier: I was worried this week, but you made it your own and you killed it” Randy: “You are probably the most different artist that we have this year. I’m waiting to see every time how you’re going to reinterpret somebody’s song. You drive your own car in your own lane and I love it.” But there was some hot guitar playing on that. Steven: “You got a lot of “forget about it” in your voice”1-866-436-5736

American Idol 11: Phillip Phillips Rushed to Hospital (But He’s Fine)

“American Idol” contestant Phillip Phillips was taken to a medical facility this morning for emergency treatment … TMZ has learned — and his future on the show is now in question.

Sources tell TMZ, Phillip — the guy who always performs with a guitar on the show — was complaining of intense pain in his abdomen … and it seemed serious enough to sound the alarm.

The nature of the medical emergency is unclear — but we’re told people close to Phillip suspect it could be gallstones.

Wow! Shannon is safe! I'm really surprised, but I'm extremely happy. I thought that she'd definitely be the bottom girl. But I'm glad that Elise was the bottom girl instead. I have a feeling if Shannon had been up against Jeremy, the judges would save Jeremy. And I don't think Shannon deserves to go over Jeremy. So it was a good thing that Elise was in the bottom with Jeremy, so that it was a more clear-cut decision for the judges to save Elise.

I'm proud of the judges for saving Elise! We all know Jennifer's great love for Jeremy, so I'm happy they made an impartial choice tonight.

We've now got 6 guys, 6 girls! I hope Shannon picks herself up next week, otherwise she'll be in trouble. The other girls will overshadow her, and I can't imagine any of the guys leaving for now.

'American Idol' Contestant Jermaine Jones Disqualified From Competition
Jones was disqualified for concealing “multiple crimes” and is expected to exit the show during Wednesday’s broadcast.
6:54 PM PDT 3/13/2012 by Michele Amabile Angermiller

Jermaine Jones has been disqualified from further participation on American Idol after it was discovered that he concealed "multiple crimes," THR's Idol Worship has learned.

Jones announced his departure on Twitter, tweeting, "Awww I will no longer b on the show."

Jones was charged with two crimes in 2011, one involving violence, according to TMZ. In both arrests, Jones gave a fake name to police. He additionally did not reveal to producers that he has outstanding warrants.

Jones departure will pan out in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night's broadcast.

Fox had no comment.

Jermaine Jones Will Be Kicked Off 'American Idol'

Jermaine Jones will be kicked off "American Idol" Wednesday night, after producers learned he concealed the fact that he was arrested twice last years and has outstanding warrants ... TMZ has learned.

As we first reported, producers discovered Tuesday that Jermaine had lied about his criminal history and that triggered the decision to confront him on camera Tuesday afternoon.

We're told one of the incidents involved violence, which was particularly troublesome to producers.  He also lied to cops by giving them fake names both times he was arrested.

"A.I." sources tell us ... Jermaine will appear on the show tomorrow night before he is sent packing.

Over the last few days, we've been reporting that Jermaine told producers his father abandoned him 10 years ago, but his dad called TMZ and called B.S. on his son, saying they see each other regularly.

Jermaine began tweeting that he never told producers about his dad abandoning him.  We're told the producers -- who knew Jermaine had made the statement -- became generally suspicious and began looking more closely at his background, and that's what led to the revelation of his criminal history.

Wow, and they called him the GENTLE Giant. I'm glad he's leaving the show actually. I never did root for him and didn't think the judges should have brought him back... I wonder if anyone will be eliminated this week then.

And I don't think Shannon will remain as the VFTW pick. She butchered the song because of a poor song choice, but as long as she wises up with that and doesn't be over-ambitious, she should be fine... Hopefully!

Even worse news for Jermaine and AI.

"Idol" Finalist Has Five Active Arrest Warrants
Jermaine Jones expected to be booted for hiding criminal record

MARCH 14--The “American Idol” contestant expected to be booted from the show tonight is the subject of five outstanding arrest warrants in New Jersey, The Smoking Gun has learned.

Jermaine Jones, 25, is wanted in three separate counties for failing to appear in court on a variety of criminal charges dating back to 2006, according to court records. His two most recent arrests came last year in Camden County, where he works as a vocal instructor.

The oldest warrant stems from a 2006 narcotics bust in Salem County. Jones’s next collar came in 2008 in Woodbury, where he was cited on an open container charge. In 2009 he was nabbed for providing cops with a false name in Winslow Township.

Jones's first arrest in 2011 came in March, when he provided a cop with the false name "Joel Jones" to "avoid being apprehended on outstanding warrants for his arrest," according to a criminal complaint. He was nabbed in late-November for again giving false information to a police officer. This time, he claimed to be "Kareem D. Watkins" in "an attempt to avoid arrest for numerous outstanding warrants for his arrest," according to a Municipal Court criminal complaint.

In a Twitter post last night, Jones reported, “Awww I will no longer b on the show.” While he did not expound further on his departure from the Fox TV hit, he apparently has been bounced for failing to disclose his arrest history to the show’s producers.

Jones was one of the final dozen competitors on the program.

I don't know how he could think someone wouldn't find out. Apparently he gave the producers a sob story about his dad abandoning him and the father came forward and said he had been in his life and was in the audience last week which was the beginning of the end.

I think Idol wanted to trust their contestants and give the benefit of the doubt. ALSO, it amazes me how fame can result in somebody in actually "coming out from hiding".

And he doesn't even seem apologetic about it. -_-

Top 12 result by the way, I'm sorry about that I'm late post.

Phillip Phillips – “Hard To Handle” by Black Crowes – 1991 – Phillip was a premie. When he was a month old doctors discovered he had a dead bowel and he almost died. Yikes. Phil was feeling like crap at his mentoring session because he was having kidney stone surgery later in the day. Will and Jimmy thought he nailed it anyway. Phil goes guitarless! And he survives. He growled his way through the performance, but it worked for him, He worked it out, as Randy would say. I still don’t like his voice, but tonight it was less annoying than usual. Randy was impressed. “You sound amazing.” He thinks the song would make a great single. Jennifer says, “It’s so natural for you–Great song for you. Perfect.” Steven likes that he picks songs that match his voice and character. “Watch your melody,” says Steven, “Keep it up, man.” – 1-866-436-5701

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MlvXFmHVKb8

Jessica Sanchez – Turn The Beat Around by Gloria Estafan – 1995 – Jimmy and Will are impressed with her professionalism and cool head. Will calls her a “swaggernaught”! Jessica doesn’t stay on the beat perfectly, but it’s a tough song–rhythmic and fast. It could have been a trainwreck, but she pulls it off. What bothers me more, though, is that I’m still not getting a sense of exactly who Jessica is. She’s like this little machine—wind her up and there she goes—like she’s on auto pilot. The judges criticize Jessica for singing behind the beat. They feel she chose the wrong song—like they want her to sing ballads every week. NO. Randy says she needs to work on her vibrato. Jessica says she didn’t have much to choose from on her list of songs. Granted, it wasn’t the greatest song choice for her, but don’t doom her to ballads every week. She’s capable of more. – 1-866-436-5702

Heejun Han – “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx – 1989 – Heejun’s parents are so cute! They speak in Korean with subtitles. Mom says he gets his humor from her. Jimmy and Will help Heejun with his diction. Heejun asks for Fergie’s number. Har. This is not a good performance. Every one of his vocal flaws was on display here. Pitchy in spots, super breathy throughout, still with the diction issues and a lack of power—the performance was like very bad karaoke. I hope there’s enough good will amongst viewers to get him through for at least another week. I really want to see him on tour. Randy calls him out on his pitch and breath problems. He wants Heejun to go more urban. Jennifer refused to critique him. “I felt your heart in the song,” says Jlo, “in the end I really loved it.” Heejan points out his pretty girlfriend in the audience. – 1-866-436-5703

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxoSxqGHjJw&feature=player_embedded

Elise Testone – “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green (Tina Turner cover) – 1983 – Will loves her rasp and her vibrato, but suggests she smile. “Tonight when I take the stage,’ people are going to be making babies,” giggles Elise. Oh look. Elise is duetting with Obama, via the magic of editing!  Elise puts her super-raspy spin on this tune. I loved most of it–she’s got great phrasing, but she overcooked some of the lines. Sometimes it’s cool just to sing a song straight. But she gave the song her own unique spin, which I appreciate. I’d rather listen to an imperfect, but unique vocal rather than to someone who hits every note but puts me to sleep. The judges feel like she redeemed herself totally this week. I’m relieved, because I want to see her on tour this summer. I only wish she had performed a little later in the lineup. “America, Elise is back,” declares Randy. – 1-866-436-5704

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAlaEn9oFiA&feature=player_embedded

Deandre Branckensick – “Endless Love” – 1994 – Initially, Deandre wanted to sing “Can You Feel the Love” but Will and Jimmy didn’t like it. They convince him to pick another song and for some reason I can’t fathom, they pick “Endless Love” which I associate with Diana and Lionel and the early 80’s. There were no other songs from that year suitable for Deandre? Really? Will yammers on about mastering and blastering through the competition. Or something. He needs to GTFO, because this proves to be a terrible song choice for Deandre. He warbles his way pitchily through the song. He’s trying, but it’s a dumb, drab tune. He hits a few clunkers, especially in his upper register. I suggested a Prince song for Deandre. There were so many dope urban songs from that year he could have picked. It’s ridiculous. The judges openly disagree with Jimmy and Will, hating on the song choice. “Jimmy steered you wrong,” says Jlo. “It wasn’t you.” Randy calls the song choice, “boring and safe.” Deandre says finding a song was hard. He had been dreading this theme since the beginning of the season. – 1-866-436-5705

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yNR0BBYlOb4

Shannon Magrane – “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men – 1995 – Jimmy wanted Shannon to sing No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” and despite admitting that she had a long creative list of songs to choose from—after Jimmy plays her a bunch of songs from his Vivid phone (PRODUCT PLACEMENT!) she chooses a tired Mariah Carey song. OY. They suggest she practice the song lying down to work on her breathing. She’s pitchy, and her phrasing is dull, she tries for some Mariah Carey-like high notes, and doesn’t quite nail them. She’s got no style or flavor. BORING. And I get now why she picked this song. It’s about God and heaven. Guess she’ll be sticking around for another week. The judges were scared for her, but thought she did a great job. Randy couldn’t get by without dropping his very special relationship with Mariah. They call her fearless. REALLY? Jlo and Randy are under the impression that the contestants have “thousands” of songs to choose from. In reality, they were probably handed a very short list of songs. – 1-866-436-5706

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2T2q3kHBZU&feature=player_embedded

Colton Dixon – Broken Heart by White Lion – 1991 – Aw. Colton and Chris Daughtry are twitter pals. They went out to dinner last week. I don’t have a problem with contestants singing obscure songs. But if they do, they better be killer. This tune, which sounds only vaguely familiar to me—is mediocre. I’m not going to remember it 2 seconds after I heard it. The upside is that was the most consistent vocal I’ve ever heard Colton deliver. Now he needs to combine the two—a killer song choice combined with a consistent vocal. At this point, Colton would have to screw up pretty badly to be in danger. His angsty “rock” is very appealing to the adult females that make up Idol’s core audience. Jennifer called Colton “a lover”. “You look pretty when you sing,” she says. Steven didn’t like it, “Wrong song for your voice and your passion.” Randy doesn’t think the song mattered—I was paying attention to you. What?!? – 1-866-436-5707

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YufDq0Bo0UI

Erika Van Pelt – “Heaven” by Bryan Adams – 1985 – I’m not sure the song needed all those “cool” little “breaks” Jimmy suggested. The arrangement messed with the flow of the melody. Combined with the 1:30 edit, the overall feel was disjointed. I still love Erika’s smokey alto, although she didn’t sound as effortless as usual. I’m glad she didn’t sing at the top of the performance order, or she would have been in real trouble. The judges thought the arrangement was “too busy”. Jlo compares her to Janis Joplin. “I feel you coming together as an artist,” says Jlo. For Randy, it was 8 out of 10. Randy thought she over sang it and basically tells her not to take bad advice from Jimmy. 1-866-436-5708

We’ve finally come to the time in the program when Ryan reveals who was disqualified last night. Of course those paying attention already know it’s Jermaine Jones. I’m not sure witnessing a GOTCHA moment on camera is necessary. But oh heck, we’ve got some time to kill if Jermaine won’t be singing. Ken and Nigel sit down with the embattled finalist and begin ratting off the criminal charges against him from a sheet. Jermaine seems a little confused. Ken says there were 4 active warrants and explains if Jermaine had come clean in the beginning the show could have helped him. Jermaine’s explanation for why he lied comes off as disingenuous—especially his description of what went down when he was arrested for disorderly conduct. “I fell down the stairs and the cops came.” WHAT? When Ken and Nigel press him, he admits he had a disagreement with a friend, but there was no violence. Nigel explains that they can’t allow people on the show with outstanding warrants. Ken says “We have to let you go.” Just so we know, there’s a clip of Jermaine singing his song choice, “Somewhere Out There” from rehearsal as he leaves the premises in a car. “That’s the best we ever heard you,” says Ken. Bah.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbM8D0gCAaQ&feature=player_embedded

Skylar Laine – “Love Sneakin’ Up On You” by Bonnie Raitt – 1994 – “Y’all are being mean!” says Skyler to the judges. It was really hard picking the songs this week, she says. Still, don’t bitch out the judges for doing their job! Jimmy doesn’t like Skyler’s song choice, so he has her consider a bunch of different tunes she’s never heard of–but in the end she sticks with Bonnie. Will wants her to sing Coolio. I’d kill to see that. The performance is a little shouty, but Skyler has great stage presence. I loved the way she jammed with the backup singers. This week’s performance felt a little forced, like she’d never sing this song if she didn’t have to. It seems to be a pattern tonight. “We do you guys a disservice if we’re not honest with you,” says Jlo. What, like all last season? Nevertheless, Jlo says she killed it. Randy liked it too. – 1-866-436-5709

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-O-V9VRU5hU

Joshua Ledet – “When a Man Loves a Woman” by – 1992 – Ryan brings Joshua a mess of crawfish from Louisiana. They look yummy! Not too many notes from the team. Joshua is perfect. He brings the house down. It’s the best performance of the night, simply. Joshua has got this incredible soulful rasp and he sings like he means it. Really means it. He knows how to hit a high note, or add a frill WHERE IT COUNTS. His phrasing never sounds gratuitous or like showboating. He’s incredible. And he works the stage—stripping his jacket off at just the right time—like the reincarnation of James Brown. The judges give him a standing ovation. Jlo is screaming. She says it’s the best Idol performance she’s ever heard ever. OK, I wouldn’t go that far. But it’s definitely one of the best. “You gave it up so big, God came through your eyes,” says Steven. 1-866-436-5710

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=x-X4WkJBv5U

Hollie Cavanagh – “The Power of Love” – 1993 – Oh Hollie’s dad is so cute, pretending he’s got something in his eye when he tears up talking about her. Hollie has a fantastic voice—a really strong instrument. I love her tone. She says now is the time not to play it safe. But isn’t choosing a big cheesy Celine Dion ballad doing exactly that? If she comes out and sings big boring ballads every week, she’s going to get Pia’d. Yes, she can hit those notes—mostly–but so what? I just have the feeling Hollie’s got more going on, and I wish she’d show it. The judges note a few pitch problems, but overall great notes. Randy notes she’s got “more swag than that” but she blew it out the box. Please show your swag, Hollie. Do it soon – 1-866-436-5711

American Idol Will Continue With 2 Hour Performance Shows in April

American Idol was originally scheduled to cut back to 90 minute performance episodes on April 4 to make way for I Hate My Teenaged Daughter. The half hour sitcom is fairing so poorly in it’s current Tuesday night slot, that FOX has decided to push the series out to the summer (it will likely be cancelled shortly due to poor ratings).

Now, Idol will air 2 hour Wednesday episodes of American Idol throughout the month of April. How they are going to fill up 120 minutes worth of show as the number of contestants dwindle is something I don’t want to contemplate at the moment. Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick are probably devising new ways to torture us with filler as we speak.

I remember the old days…maybe Season 7 and prior–the episodes would cut back to 90 minutes at Top 9 or 10.  At Top 8 or so, they would cut back to an hour.  During Season 5–Idol’s most popular season ratings wise–there were hour-long performance shows and 30 minute results.  THINK ABOUT THAT FOX.

So Jlo and Steven Tyler have already jumped ship leaving only Randy (of course) with two more new partners again. When are they going to put this show out of its misery?
