So are the team colours determined by the tassles on their bag? Never been sure on this one!

Well, the tassles are orange, and in the next pic, one of them has an orange headband. :duno:

But they should have colored bandannas somewhere...

my friend says that the race was going to come to fiji,is that true?

We don't know if they are going to Fiji or not. If they are going to Fiji, the only ones that would know are the TAR production people, the people in Fiji that are working with TAR to arrange it and the people hired in Fiji to work on the tasks. Somebody might have talked and let the secret out, but usually it doesn't happen.

Ask your friend how he knows and you'll have an idea about how reliable the information is.

I hope they are going to Fiji. It would be a great location!

I'm his friend

In the night that the teams got off to Miami, there was a flight to Nadi, his city. That's why.

I'd discount the possibility based on Miami, then. It would make little sense for teams to fly from LAX to Miami to get to Fiji; there are more direct flights and connections than using Miami in that situation.

Phil seen on 30 Nov in Buenos Aires and teams racing in Asuncion on 1 Dec doesn't make too much sense if we follow the traditional production schedule... A traditional timetable would look like this:

26 Nov: Start in Los Angeles, USA
27 Nov: Travel to somewhere in Argentina via Buenos Aires
28 Nov: Leg 1 - Somewhere in Argentina
29 Nov: Leg 2 - Somewhere else in Argentina
30 Nov: Non-race day
1 Dec: Leg 3 - Asuncion, Paraguay

Would Phil filming in Buenos Aires on 30 Nov fit into this schedule? Perhaps doing an after-the-fact stand-up? Something to start off Leg Three before teams leave for Paraguay? The alternative option where Leg 2 takes place on 30 Nov puts a "short leg" between Buenos Aires and Asuncion, which hasn't been the modus operandi for travel between two different countries outside of Europe in a normal timetable:

26 Nov: Start in Los Angeles, USA
27 Nov: Travel to somewhere in Argentina via Buenos Aires
28 Nov: Leg 1 - Somewhere in Argentina
29 Nov: Non-race day
30 Nov: Leg 2 - Buenos Aires, Argentina
1 Dec: Leg 3 - Asuncion, Paraguay

Perhaps confirming when Phil was seen in Buenos Aires would help clear matters up.

That's a useful summary, thanks Neobie. I'm more inclined to believe the first one, for the reasons you've specified. The shorter Pit Stop is much more likely to be the one within the same country, and probably doesn't include air travel. Flying the day after a Pit Stop would require Phil to likely be either only hours ahead or on the same flights as the teams.

Edit: My timetables are off-kilter this season.

We have Phil doing a stand-up in Buenos Aires on 30 Nov, but teams racing in Asuncion the next day, 1 Dec. We also have teams presumably arriving in Europe on the morning of 3 Dec, but racing in Turin the next day, 4 Dec.

Usually there's a day of "rest" in between legs of such distances apart, but apparently there isn't for these two pairs of legs. This season has been running on a compact schedule, I think we're going to have to abandon the assumptions that have worked pretty well for us thus far. Are they trying to rush filming before Christmas, or is this going to be a permanent change?
Title: Re: The Amazing Race 20 » Timeline & Spoiler Summary

The other possibility to me is that they've got a country off the beaten path on the route this time that is going to burn a couple of days because of the flight schedules. This would be like what we've seen with the Seychelles in TAR 16, Malawi for TAR 19, Burka Faso, so what candidates are there for such a leg or two? This is where Nepal might be possible, or Israel (where the flights almost have to connect through Europe, or some other countries in Afria, and your guess is as good as mine since northern Africa (except possibly for Morocco is still not safe yet) and there are a lot of African nations the show hasn't gotten to.

And I agree that while production's flight gives hints, we cannot assume that the teams travel the same path; in fact, I'm sure production is trying to get and stay ahead of the Racers as much as possible. I think we need to think of rest periods being whatever production needs to move itself ahead of the Racers, and the Racer may not get 26 hours of rest except during transportation.

theschnauzers,

What you are saying about a hidden leg is plausible except for this reason:

Teams reportedly flew from GRU (Sao Paulo) to Germany (either FRA or MUC). You would not double back to northern Africa or Cape Verde Islands or the Azores to get to Torino from Frankfurt or Munich. There wasn't time to do so with our official TIMELINE (at the beginning of this thread) showing Dec. 2-3 in Asuncion and Dec. 4 in Torino.

apskip, I am not saying there's already been a hidden leg; I am saying that if the actual timeline this time turns out to be compressed compared to average, it may indicate that a  later leg may be planned for a destination that is off the beaten path. I do not take as established that there have been legs definitely anywhere except Paraguay and Italy. There may be legs in Argentina and Germany, but I don't think we can say either has been firmly established. Possible, but not established.

Dom, don't you think Torino must be directly after Paraguay because of the dates? Dec. 3 in one and Dec. 4 in the other. Then we must have missed at least three legs between there and the possible Nepal.

Well teams took a night flight on the 2nd from Sao Paulo, landing very early on the 3rd. Teams were seen checking in in Torino late on the 4th. Teams would have to be racing for the entire day on the 3rd before finding an hours of operation to continue racing on the 4th.

I agree, it's a very tight schedule, but I'm not sure a single leg would have an equalising night flight and an hours of operation.

That definitely sounds likely! Although we had another pretty quick rest between Legs 1 & 2.. Perhaps they're just trying to speed it up this season? I'd love to know where teams were on the 3rd. It would clear a lot of things up for sure!

Dom El,

I see that you are the original source of the 40,000 miles (from CBS) estimated for AR20. Somebody (and I cannot find the post so I am not sure who, although it may have been you) suggested that a verification of CBS figures would be useful. I can't do that yet for AR20, but I can for AR19. I spent the time to find the mileage for each leg of AR19. Now, everyone needs to be aware that a big part of the difference between the real distance and a direct nonstop estimate of mileage is due to connecting points for air travel not being on the shortest route line. However, that is not the biggest part of the discrepancy, which is that air miles are nautical miles, 15% longer than statute (land) miles. So I believe that in its calculations CBS takes the air miles and multiplies them by 1.15. If you do that you come out close to reconciling the numbers. Here are mine, with air miles marked by A and statue miles marked by S:

LAX TPE 8718  A
TPE JKT  4487 A
JKT JOG    270 S
Jogjakarta to/from Borobudur 25 x 2 = 50 S
JOG JKT    222 A
JKT HKT  1073 A note - 2 teams added on about 800 air miles by routing via Bangkok
HKT BKK    439 A
BKK SIN     860 A
SIN JNB   5267 A
JNB LLW     972 A
LLW to Salami by bus and return 100 x 2 = 200 S
LLW  NBO  855 A
NBO AMS 4106 A
AMS CPH   377 A
CPH Billund 150 by car S
Billund Hamburg 150 by car S
Hamburg Brussels 305 by train S
Brussels to around Belgium by car 200 S
BRU PTY 4663 A
PTY ATL 1740 A

Statute Miles 1325
Total Air Mileage (Panama City to be added in) 33790  conversion to Statute Miles 38858
Grand Total Statute-Equivalent Miles 40,183

The CBS mileage estimates have been driving people crazy since the beginning 10 years ago. That they're converting everything to statute miles to explain the often-observed discrepancy makes a lot of sense -- as there were seasons where it seemed as if CBS had substituted kilometers for miles and labeled the result as miles.

Hopefully someone will give the prior seasons a go at some point and see if we can match up the mileage to fit whatever miles Phil tells the winning team on the final mat season after season.

If Elizabeth saw four teams arriving at Rome FCO while boarding an EasyJet flight to Geneva on the morning of 4 Dec, Bavaria could not have been Leg Four.

Docol saw teams checking in at Asuncion on 2 Dec at 5.23pm. The quickest way they can get to Neuschwanstein Castle in Fussen is:
PZ 712 from Asuncion to Sao Paulo: 1800-2117
JJ 8070 from Sao Paulo to Frankfurt: 2325-3/1514
Minimum 15min for customs and getting car: 1514-1532
Drive from Frankfurt to Fussen: 1532-1923
Minimum 15min for tasks and Pit Stop: 1923-1938

Now even if we assume a TBC and teams have to go straight to Rome:
Drive from Fussen to Munich: 1938-2130
Minimum 30min to purchase tickets and check in: 2130-2200

The only flights that leave after 10pm from Munich are... Hong Kong and Moscow. The earliest flight the next day to Rome gets them in at 11.00am, too late for Elizabeth to see them before she leaves at 9.50am. A connection through Frankfurt to get them into Rome earlier requires a 23min layover, which I don't think any team, let alone four of them, would try.

There's the absurd leg planning that would have teams travel by land all the way back to Frankfurt for the 7.25am flight to Rome. A train would require teams to leave at 8.33pm (giving them at most 1h10 for racing), and driving would require teams to leave at 3.02am (giving them 7h24 to perform all tasks at Fussen). There's also the possibility of teams driving to Zurich for a 7.20am flight to Rome (giving teams 8h30 at Fussen).

Alright, sure - so driving to Frankfurt or Zurich is technically possible. But what would the logic be in having teams fly to Frankfurt, drive four hours to Fussen, to not have a Pit Stop, then driving another three hours to another airport to get to Rome, when their final destination is Turin? Or the logic in not using the Munich airport, which has direct flights the next morning to Turin, Milan, and Rome?

Add that to the fact that if Bavaria is Leg Four, it would take place entirely at night, which would make the leg a complete waste of scenery. TPTB can be mad sometimes, but not this mad. The Bavaria leg has to take place after the Turin leg.

Neobie,

You continue to be hung up on the Rome airport sighting. I believe that the Rome sighting does not apply to the majority of teams in AR20 if there was any Rome airport visit at all. I agree with everything your analyses concluded, EXCEPT THE LAST SENTENCE. Bavaria does not have to be after Torino. I say it was before it based on all the information you and i have developed.

So now that we know when the Baku leg is airing, assuming twelve legs here's what we have:

1. Salta, Argentina
2. Buenos Aires, Argentina
3. Asuncion, Paraguay
4. Turin, Italy
5. Fussen, Germany
6. Baku, Azerbaijan
...
x. Tanzania (maybe two legs)
...
11. Osaka, Japan
12. Honolulu, USA

Three missing legs in between Baku and Osaka. Did we get how many countries we're visiting this time?

No missing leg between Buenos Aires and Turin. If it's not a Germany leg, what took them so long?

Part of this note about destinations is just logic and then the rest will be speculation. CBS and WRP have publicized in advance, as they frequently do, the new countries never visited before by an Amazing Race. Those are Paraguay and Azerbaijan. We have the countries of Italy, Germany, Tanzania and Japan nailed down.  That means that the European legs will be Italy and Germany (order is arguable and I have with Neobie on this point) and the next two should be Azerbaijan and Tanzania (again, order is arguable and to me does not matter for this analysis).

So we are left with legs 8, 9 and 10 almost certainly in Asia (as is Azerbaijan in leg 6 or 7) and the knowledge that countries will be previously used by WRP. So which ones might those be (in no particular order)?

1. India
2. Sri Lanka
3. Thailand
4. Malaysia
5. Singapore
6. China
7.Cambodia
8. Taiwan
9. United Arab Emirates
10. Vietnam
11. Mongolia
12. South Korea
13. Japan
14. Kazakhstan

Which countries won't it be?
1. Nepal (sorry, all you Nepal proponents but you have to face the facts)
2. Myanmaar/Burma
3. Bhutan
4. Laos
5. Qatar
6. North Korea
7. Saudi Arabia
8. all of the Asian "Middle East countries"
9. 3 other "stan" countries besides Kazakhstan

I say that 2 or 3 out of the 14 countries on the "which ones might it be?" list was chosen for 3 unknown legs on the AR20 route.

The MODIFY function on posts still does not work consistently, so I have to add things to a note to MODIFY it. For the "prior countries list" add Bangladesh and Oman and up the count to 16 countries.

For the "never visited countries list" please add Pakistan and Yemen.

Is there any chance that this could be a 13 leg race?

We have up to at least leg 4 (if not leg 5) done by Dec. 4

Then teams being spotted in Japan on Dec. 19 before finishing in Hawaii

That leaves 14-15 days to get from Italy to Osaka

And since we have 6 confirmed legs (4 in the beginning, and 2 at the end); to me it seems like 14-15 days is a little much for just 6 legs

Call it wishful thinking, but it seems at very least feasible to me

The MODIFY function on posts still does not work consistently, so I have to add things to a note to MODIFY it. For the "prior countries list" add Bangladesh and Oman and up the count to 16 countries.

Have you tried Quick Edit?

So it's apparently a hotel and spa, not a winery. The press release messed up. There are plenty of wineries around it though.

I think it is both?

The grand entrance pictured in the publicity shots of Patios de Cafayate really belongs to the large Esteco winery, with this upscale boutique hotel tucked away behind a gate on the right side of the property.

So Leg 4 sites in Turin is the Museo d'ell automobile, Oval Lingotto Olympic Stadium (former Fiat Factory), rappel down carpark, paint statue and food challenge . I`am so much looking forward to the food challenge ( they had some epic ones in season 18), just hope that they also have a beer task in leg 5 in Bavaria.  :hrt: :keeta: :hrt:

I was thinking since the person who saw Dave and Rachel in Japan said they apparently were the last team to arrive and we know they are in the final 3, maybe the last 2 legs are going to be with the final 3 teams. But i know it's a crazy idea, maybe the 4th team just fell far behing a la Nick/Vicki.

I just hope that they continue the way, they have done the last two seasons. Final four one team eliminated, not final four and the last team there arrive get another chance, like they have done before!!!!

The question is, how will they still have 4 teams left by May 6th?? Even with no show next week and another non-elimination leg somewhere in the next 4 shows, it would still go something like this...

Apr  1 : no show
Apr  8 : 6 teams race
Apr 15 : 5 teams race (non elim leg)
Apr 22 : 5 teams race
Apr 29 : 4 teams race
May  6 : 3 teams race, season finale

To have 4 teams left for the start of the May 6th show, there either has to be another night where the show doesn't air (in addition to Apr 1) plus 1 non-elim leg somewhere in the next 4 - OR - two of the next 4 legs would have to be non-elim legs.

There will be two more NEL's to meet the limits. May 6th is a two hour two episode show, that's what is confusing you I think. The show airs all night but April 1.

The double show for the finale wasn't so confusing as was exactly how they would still have four teams in the running at the start of the finale night show.

It would seem to have to be two more NELs, but that struck me as excessive since that would make two of the four remaining legs before finale night NELs.  Is it normal to have NELs more frequently towards the end like that?

TBC=To Be confirmed, same idea. :)
It's a bit late in the game to argue terminology, but this is a battle worth fighting. TBC is not ToBeConfirmed. It is To Be Continued, which is a quite different concept. Let's be purists in our use of terminology so nobody should be confused.

I have been quite disappointed this season at the lack of a timeline. I attempted to keep a running one up for about the last half of AR20. Here is a total timeline for AR20 (See the AR20 Transportation Thread if you want details of the flights that are the glue that binds the legs together):
Nov. 26 - 28 flights LAX MIA, MIA EZE, EZE SLA to get to Salta for leg 1 tasks

Nov. 29 start leg 2 in Cafayete, 18 hour bus to Buenos Aires

Dec. 30 leg 2 tasks in Buenos Aires

Dec. 1 leg 3 tasks in Asuncion

Dec. 2 evening pit stop releases start

Dec. 3 flights Asuncion to Sao Paulo to Rome to Torino

Dec. 4 Torino leg

Dec. 5 Torino to Ehrwald, Austria by train

Dec. 6 Fussen leg

Dec. 7 drive Fussen to MUnich, flights Munich to Istanbul to Baku

Dec. 8 Baku leg

Dec. 9 flights Baku to Istanbul to Nairobi to Arusha; charter flights to Ngrongoro Crater leave at 0930, 0945, 1000 with 2 teams each

Dec.10 Ngrongoro Crater leg

Dec. 11 Extended Pit stop (total is more than 24 hours)

Dec. 12 second Tanzania leg

Dec. 13 Vanessa/Ralph flights Arusha to Nairobi to Doha to Kochi; other teams Arusha to DarEsSalaam to Nairobi to Doha to Kochi

Dec. 14 Kochi area leg 9

Dec. 15 Extended pit stop

Dec. 16 Kochi area leg 10

Dec. 17 flights Kochi to Singapore to either Seoul or Shanghai, then into Hiroshima

Dec. 19 Hiroshima/Osaka leg

Dec. 19 minimal pit stop

Dec. 19 flight Osaka to Honolulu; finale is on Oahu

I have a feeling they connected through Shanghai enroute to Hiroshima because the teams were shown in a China Eastern plane, and Shanghai is a major hub for China Eastern.

Here are some notes and a few ways in which this differs from Apskip's timeline here (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,26553.msg752202.html#msg752202):

Leg #1
Since the first flights were producer-provided, I think they would have bundled all teams together on the same flight up until Buenos Aires, which jives with our sightings of all teams at the same gate at LAX. Given the choice between the Aerolíneas Argentinas flight and the American Airlines flight, I believe producers would have got a cheaper, single ticket on AA.

Leg #3
I included the direct flight to Asunción that the earlier teams took.

Leg #4
A connection in Brazil is confirmed by the airport scene of Bopper/Mark realising they're on a later flight, where the window panes of the terminal show a logo based on the Brazilian flag. I'm not too sure whether it's São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro though, but the schedules suggest the former. Pit Stop check-in times are from the shadows at Art/JJ's arrival, which run straight across the plaza.

Leg #5
I got the train timings based off current timetables, but most of the clues match up. The train timings are consistent with the times at which teams checked out of Turin, there's a clock showing 7am as the second wave of teams arrive at Ehrwald, and we see a shot of the train number Bopper/Mark are on. All the teams actually had to connect through Garmisch-Partenkirchen (where the yodelling restaurant the next morning is), which shows how contrived production makes the route to try to bunch teams. Rachel/Dave and Joey/Danny actually spent the night in town, took a train the next morning to Ehrwald, just to grab a car and drive back to where they started! Also, Bopper/Mark caught up with Kerri/Stacy somewhere along the Italian main line; they took the same train arriving in Innsbruck.

Leg #7
Teams connected in Dubai, not Istanbul. Just as teams step off the plane in Nairobi (before the squabble) you can see the Emirates uniform on the airline staff. This means they arrived in Arusha the same night (you can also see the boarding pass for PW 728 during the fight), not the next morning.

Leg #8
Thanks DrRox for figuring out the Arusha hotel transfer!

Leg #9
I'm still not 100% sure about the flights, because if you watch the episode you'll find severe sound editing when it comes to when flights are supposed to arrive. It also confuses me that teams going to Dar es Salaam doubled back to Nairobi before continuing on to Doha, where they have plenty of options to get to Nairobi to catch Vanessa/Ralph's Dubai flight. Did they just not do enough homework? But you also see Art/JJ on a Qatar Airways plane, so maybe what we have is correct after all.

Leg #11
Teams were clearly shown taking a China Eastern flight, which rules out the Seoul option. There is an option of connecting through Kuala Lumpur to get to Shanghai, but it's slightly less convenient than the Singapore connection. I'm also revising the Osaka Pit Stop to three hours instead of two; Ryan Gartman's camera has EXIF data, and using the Moscow clock-tower trick on another photo of him wearing a watch, it has the Rachel/Dave check-in photo just three minutes short of the three hour duration. (We'd assume the chat with Phil after check-in takes at least that long.) But three hours has got to be the shortest Pit Stop on record (well ignoring the TBCs)! What would happen if Ralph/Vanessa got stuck somewhere and Phil misses his flight to the finale? Would we have to Guido Phil? ;)

Leg #12
Art/JJ did not take into account time difference when they said they had 12h to rest; that's the clock duration of the flight.

General
Most Pit Stop durations were figured out in great part by JJ's big watch (and sometimes Dave's too). So future racers please wear analog watches with big faces to help me out!

I placed the extended Pit Stops (well, those over 24h) in Baku, Arusha, and Kochi. They're set up so that teams still arrive one day and leave the next, albeit in the late afternoon or evening (always to book tickets for the next morning). They're also positioned just before the complicated travel segments, giving Phil time to move ahead of the teams. The extended Pit Stop in Arusha also give time for Bopper/Mark, who check in to Mto wa Mbu in the afternoon, to move to the Arusha Pit Stop hotel and then be examined by the doctor at noon the next day (according to the doctor's watch).
Unlike in Apskip's timeline, I avoided placing the extended Pit Stops in the middle of double-leg countries, in this case Leg #7 (Ngorongoro) and Leg #9 (Kochi). Phil doesn't have to run around as much, and traditionally these Pit Stops have been shorter affairs. Mark/Bopper help with the timeline again: Bopper doesn't have time to recover from his minor heatstroke before the start of the next leg.
Consolidated, the Pit Stop durations are: 13h, 15h, 20h, 19h, 19h, 36h, 15h, 34h, 21h, 29h, 3h.

I'm also working on the maps for TAR 20 and am just about done; if anyone is feeling up to the challenge please help me find the Fast Forward location in Baku and the Pit Stop hotel for the second Kochi leg!

¡Outstanding job, Neobie!   :conf: :conf:

But can I add a little correction?  The second time Rachel & Dave go to Moli'i Fishpond, after Rachel completed the RB, they ride an ATV - the same with Art & JJ and Brendon & Rachel (I'm making the sync of the spanish subs for the final Leg, and I checked this on the video)-.

Ahh, Grasshopper.........very excellent analysis. But do you mean Mark's recovery from minor heat prostration/heatstroke in Kochi...not Bopper's?

Regarding the Nairobi confusion on the Arusha to Kochi flights.....the only conclusion I could come up with was a seat availability problem. It seemed to me that Ralph/Vanessa just were going to wait at the travel agency in Arusha to the last possible moment to see if they could find seats on the earlier arriving Dubai flight and they were successful. If there was a seat bottleneck, it could have been either the Nairobi to Dubai or the Dubai to Kochi segments. I doubt we will ever know unless someone asks the racers. The other teams certainly could have checked in Dar es Salaam, but either they did and seats were not available or they didnt care about the time differential. Even if Ralph/Vanessa managed the earlier arrival.....the other 4 teams knew that they would arrive in a tie for 2nd and just fight it out after arrival in Kochi.

One more thing, about the travel from Ezeiza Airport to Aeroparque.

According to the time they arrived to Buenos Aires, the most probable way the teams travelled from one terminal to the other is by bus.  There's a bus company called "Manuel Tienda León" who provides charter services between Ezeiza and Aeroparque, and has a service who departs from the International Airport at 11.15PM and arrives to Jorge Newbery at 00.30AM (there's another one scheduled 00.00-01.15AM).  By the way, this is the less expensive option of all, no matter if the charter was hired previously by WRP or the same teams had to buy the tickets for it (and the safest one).

About the Buenos Aires part of Leg 2:

The first two pics are from the Retiro Bus Terminal on Buenos Aires.  The interesting thing about this two are not only the place itself - as a retrace of the TAR steps -, but the fact that this is not the designated place were people can get their taxis.  This is the Section "C" from the parking lot of the Terminal.
The last photo shows Art & JJ jumping into their cab in that place.  The thing here is that all the taxis  there belong to the same company "RADIO TAXI MI TAXI", as we can see in the insert.  That means teams were especifically sent to that section to get into those cabs and not the others on the taxi stand.

I found the schedules of the different services teams used to travel to complete the info from the Timeline:

LA VELOZ DEL NORTE/1rst bus:   dep.  12.00am.     arr.  08.00am.

NUEVA CHEVALLIER/2nd. bus:     dep.  12.50am.     arr.  07.45am + 2 - 09.45am.

LA VELOZ DEL NORTE/3rd. bus:   dep.  15.30pm.     arr.  09.30am.

Note:  I added the two hours delay to respect what the team members said on the episode, but I estimate that they were more time stranded.  It's the only way the third bus could left them behind, and cut out a 2.40 minutes difference (also, when they all reach the Mercado, Nary & Jaime and Kerry & Stacey has already gone).
