It always bothers me when they mirror a clip in the show.  There was the time in Dubai when Colin's wristwatch was suddenly on his right hand and not his left.  Why?  Because they wanted to hide the fact that Racers were running to a clue to the left.  In mirror reversal Colin was running to the 'right'.  This was done to hide the Roadblock of the leg.

So, here in Panama we have a mirror reversed clip again!    :browsie: ???   Why?

From TAR19's opening credits, here is an image from the clip of the dancers in front of the Catedral Metropolitana in Casco Viejo.

Now look at this shot of the cathedral and what do we have?  panoramio (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/26593520?source=wapi&referrer=kh.google.com)

So now that it is established that the clip is mirror reversed, what are they hiding this time?   :snicker:

Look at the central dancer!  There is something odd about her dress!     :hoot:   In the two shots below, which have been re-reversed to normal view, you may be able to see it!

I think that the clue to the next location is written in the design of the dress!  The last five letters are: V - i - e - j - o

I can't make out the preceding letters, but Viejo is enough of a clue to make an educated guess:

The next location (or maybe even the Pit Stop) is Panama Viejo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panam%C3%A1_Viejo)

Bravo! But the place they are dancing is the Casco Viejo... Think we can figure out the first word?
Title: Re: TAR 19 EP 11 (Title TBD) Panama

We need a good HD frame by frame of the clip.  I can't do frame by frame on my set.  I just get the moment of the click and most of the time it goes halfsies with the next frame.

I figure we are seeing a clue because only one dancer is shown with it, she's the subject of the clip, and the attempt to mask it.

I could not find any other nnnnn Viejos in Panama City that would be worthy of being a next destination.  And if they were anyplace other than Casco Viejo then Casco Viejo would be a good guess too.

But I can!!

All have been reversed, this is a complete HD set.

Reporting directly from Panama, and repeating here,( just to throw Sucks a bone it was already posted there) I learned from vendors at the Plaza de la Idependencia of Casco Viejo (pictured above) that these four Teams were seen:  Marcus & Amani, Tommy & Andy, Jeremy & Sandy, and Ernie & Cindy.  It was also observed that Tommy & Andy were the last to leave the plaza.   :groan:

Continuing the Panama Adventure, I followed a hunch that the Race would go to palace of great cultural interest.  So I took a tour up the Chagres River which is very close to Panama City.  With dozens of places to visit, my guide took me straight to the village of the Parara Puru tribe which one of the indigenous Embera who live in Panama.  It happens that the Race visited that exact same village

Here are some of the Embera as we were approached at the river's edge:   :hearts:

I will report more when the data rate is cheaper!  But here is the clue, literally, written on my arm by one of the tattoo artists in the village:

One thing that I remember is that Andy said he let Tommy do the driving roadblock in case there was a mental Roadblock on the following leg. And also it seems strange that Sandy might have willingly chosen to do the tightrope task. Could it be that we still have the same rule of "go into the last leg with the RB count 6-6" as in Unfinished Business?

Since Tommy mentioned at the Pit Stop during an interview by Phil that he had "gotten in his 6 ROADBLOCKs" the message there is unequivocal.  It appears that only a team with a FAST FORWARD (and there are none in AR19 so far) will be allowed to deviate.

I want to follow up on another thing that Andy and Tommy said at the Atomium, that there had been no eating challenge so far in AR19. That leaves only Panama and the Atlanta metro area to have one if there is going to be one. Most Amazing Races have an eating challenge, so I am guessing that this one will too. From the picture of either squid or octopi in the preview, it looks like Panama will be the place. I remember that Andy and Tommy also said at some point (perhaps at the Atomium, I don't remember) that one of them has an iron stomach and can eat anything.

In the preview there is a short clip of these longboats going up the Chagres River:

They are handmade from hollowed-out tree trunks.  Here is our illustrious guide Anne Gordon as we were docked at the Parara Puru village of the indigenous Embera:

I saw a preview of the next leg's episode where Andy & Tommy are running down to the escalator and I think they're inside of a shopping mall, probably in Panama or still in Brussels?  Is there anyone who could upload a picture of that scene and probably search that place?

p.s.
I really miss Bill & Cathy and sadly got eliminated. :'( Hopefully either Andy & Tommy or Ernie & Cindy will be the next team to eliminated. :meow:

Perhaps this is stating the obvous, but for anyone who isn't familiar with Chaplin, he performed a rediculously comical tightrope walk in the movie The Circus, so this is surely a reference to an awkward attempt at the Panama high-wire task.

It looks like they (or at least Marcus/Amani and Andy/Tommy) go to the native village at night when it is very dark. That should make for interesting viewing. It must take hours to get there.

Or there was an Hours of Operation and everyone performs the task in the daylight. It would odd to do the canoes and such in the pitch black dark...

Andy and Tommy are seen in the canoe in the dark but Jeremy and Tommy are at the roadblock at the same time. HOO before the roadblock?

In Panama I went to the Plaza de la Idependencia of Casco Viejo because it was shown in the opening credits.

Which, when reversed look like this (thanks to Peach):

Those dresses, BTW, are the national dress of Panama:   Pollera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollera)

You can buy little dolls with the Pollera dresses:

There was a greeter for our Transit of the Panama Canal and she was wearing the Pollera too!

We know from this preview that the clue is written on the dress:

This was what I was trying to get at in this post:  Panama Viejo

I think that the clue to the next location is written in the design of the dress!  The last five letters are: V - i - e - j - o

I can't make out the preceding letters, but Viejo is enough of a clue to make an educated guess:

The next location (or maybe even the Pit Stop) is Panama Viejo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panam%C3%A1_Viejo)

http://www.youtube.com/v/eNKhXqCea-A?version=3&hl

The location of Panama Viejo is perfect for the Pit Stop.  Also, the time of day that racers were there is consistent with it being the last thing they do.

When I went there, there were Panama Hat vendors in the Plaza de la Idependencia of Casco Viejo who were present on July 9th who got to see the Teams search for the clue.  It was very amusing to them.  I showed the pictures of the remaining 4 Teams to get identification.  I even threw in some Teams we know were not there.  And the hat guys said those people were not not there.  So that checks out!  I know I'm rambling on here so I will cut to the chase.

Tommy & Andy left the Plaza de la Idependencia 2 hours after the other three teams.

The final three are:  Marcus & Amani, Jeremy & Sandy, Ernie & Cindy

OMG I LOVE YOU CHATEAU!!

BEST NEWS! I mean I love Andy and Tommy as people and racers since they enjoy the tasks so much. But a famous person should never win TAR. I firmly believe it;s for the average person who couldn't go on a journey of a lifetime on their own!!
Best of luck to the final 3!

Probably the biggest collapse since Rob and Amber's second go-around.  While it kind of sucks, it really doesn't. The other teams were more exciting throughout the race.  Andy & Tommy were awesome too, but after a decade-plus of TAR, the other teams fit into that factor of some excitement that you'd either love or you'd love-to-hate.

JMO. And FTR, half of Andy & Tommy's wins occurred thanks to some minor mistakes from the other teams.  Can't really blame A/T for them, but the one that nailed Ernie & Cindy was, IMO, complete BS.  Then another win was a close call after the express pass was used.  Again, not A/T's fault, but also not as impressive as some of the past teams in the earlier and more difficult courses.

I really like Andy/Tommy but a team of 2 professional male athletes seems inherently unfair. I wish them well. They've come in first so many times and won a lot of prizes so their time wasn't wasted. :)

Back to Panama:  My guide Anne Gordon  (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0329995/) (Embera website (http://www.emberavillagetours.com/))  who has done quite a lot of filming work had not heard a peep about WRP going to one of the Embera villages.  However, she did hear about some thing very interesting; and at the same time a little disappointing!  She said there were rumors of an American film company asking to set up a zipline going over the Panama Canal !   :hoot:

Dang!  Too bad that did not get approved!  So instead we have the highwire across the San Francisco Bay Towers.

So Andy & Tommy come in 4th.  I'm not upset much but I am a little surprised!  Andy & Tommy must have had major problems in the Plaza de la Independencia!  At least Andy & Tommy go home with a lot of prizes.

Well, knowing that Andy&Tommy are last, that Jeremy&Sandy finish just ahead of them on the cable thing, and listening to Sandy saying "We're last" on the cab, for me it's pretty clear that the leg is won either by Ernie&Cindy or Amani&Marcus, and Jeremy&Sandy arrive in third.

What do you think? :)

I think that this leg will be
1 - Ernie and Cindy
2 - Jeremy and Sandy
3 - Amani and Marcus
4 - Andy and Tommy

Because AM got to the "natives" place when is dark, and JS got their when was day still, look at the promos.

The hours of operation would appear to be at the Embera village since the Teams are at the highwire at times that differ by a couple hours.

This shot of Cindy is taken between 7:40 and 8:30 am (assumes July 9th, sunrise at 6:04 am).

This shot of Sandy was taken between 10:51 and 11:21 am.

This is as disappointing as when the Cowboys were eliminated. And since when isn't a professional football player who probably makes MILLIONS of dollar as "famous" person. That would make me sick if they actually won.  Of the teams who are left, I really don't know that I will even bother watching.

http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/790/

I've been there a few years ago, it's definitely worth seeing as is the Panama Canal Museum.  :)
Actually all of Panama is very pretty, it has amazing wildlife & gorgeous uninhabited islands and nature reserves.  :)

As for this episode, well.. I wasn't that excited about the ending.
I wasn't a huge fan of the A & T but they were definitely the strongest team throughout and I don't think they deserved to be eliminated like they did.

The other teams were almost all equally clueless (except for one asking about the etched building which was recognized by the cabbie), they just got lucky that the cabbies talked to eachother. This was not by their own merit or else they would have been in search for Balboa avenue or statue as well I dare say.

I don't understand why in some legs teams have to go back and get their clue right and in others - when it's passed on by cabbies - this is ok?  :duno:

Tbh I have no big favorites with the remaining three because I think the team that deserved to win most up till now is gone.  :(

ETA: I felt A& T getting eliminated might be coming since they editted other teams complaining about how strong they were, the mojo with the bad luck stones and the 'shocker' thing that was being repeated as well.

THAT WAS AN AWESOME LEG!!!! :hearts: :hearts:
Best of the season!!!
Great challenges. They were pretty hard. We saw a lot of the country, from the natives and the market to skyscrapers and touristic/historic places.
It was action packed. Big coup de théâtre at the end of the episode. Those were missing from this season I think.
Love how the final three came almost at the same time on the mat. It was pretty moving to see all six of them happy to be there. Cindy saying to J/S "I'm so happy for you guys" because they won, E/C and J/S calling A/M when they arrive at the pitstop, Marcus making a David/Goliath reference. WOW.
The taxi thing was never seen before (?). It was epic.
I really though that A/T were going to be part of the finale, but hey, they won three trips, $25,000 and two cars.
I'm routing for Ernie & Cindy, but I would be pretty happy to see any team win the race.

Has anyone else seen the facebook pace? It's just like when the cowboys were eliminated.  :res:
Why are they doing that??? :groan: Nobody cheated or anything.

Amazing. I have to say that, as a Tintin fan, the beggining of the leg was incredible. A great "equalizing" task to begin, which, as a great Tintin fan, I loved. AND, when I went to Brussels about a year and a half ago I definitely LOVED the Atomium and that specific painting in the wall, so it was just AMAZING to get those points connected. Production deserves a prize for that.

About the leg, GREAT, one of the greatest ever. Definitely. Quite a lot of tasks and Route Markers, but it was just amazing to see so many things of the country. With no doubts, the best Central-South American leg EVER.

The winners, just got a bad luck day. And the F3 teams a lucky day, that taxi ride was just incredible, as some teams were going to the SAME place Andy & Tommy had been in, so that wasn't anything but luck. REALLY.

I loved Jeremy & Sandy winning the leg, and even though people may think they do not deserve it, I want them to get the million. Anyway, I'm happy if those Ernie & Cindy don't win, or even better; they should get 3rd place.

I was wondering if the Tintin task was related to the Steven Spielburg movie that either has just or is about to be released. I was half-expecting a reference to the film (as TAR 9 did with the DaVinci Code).

So I was surprised about the lack of mention. I will say the producers did manage to find an actor/model who could look just like Tintin, but I'm still not sure if it really had anything to do with Brussels or with Belgium. But that was a good middle-of-the-night task that slowed down the teams to a preferred flight to Panama (after the train) and gave Phil and Bert more time to get to Panama ahead of the teams.

Tintin is definitely very Belgian. When I think of Belgium I think waffles, the EU, and Tintin, all of which the race actually managed to cover. Nice!

(The EU visit was slightly contrived, a translation task between the gazillion languages the organisation uses - and has to translate on a daily basis - would be epic.)

As was already mentioned, Tintin's creator is from Belgium.  And btw, I loved the task since I would've probably recognized the Tintin photo and figured out who I was supposed to be if I was on the Race -- though if I was running on not enough sleep, that might be harder.

That task had no impact whatsoever on teams' ability to get to Amsterdam Schiphol airport in time for an early afternoon flight because it was a 4 to 5 am task lasting probably less than 1 hour. It also did not help Phil and Bertram to get ahead to Panama. I checked flights from Brussels (none) and from Paris-CDG (none) so the once a day flight from AMS to PTY was the only alternative. It would have been almost impossible (only way extended pit stop of preceding that leg) for Phil to complete his pit stop check-ins for leg 10 well before noon because the train from Cologne arrived at 935am and several hundred kilometers of driving to Lommel and then to Ghent and its environs and finally back to Brussels were required.

What about Frankfurt? or other cities that the Racers did not use? TPTB don't have to limit themselves the way they can limit the Racers, which they apparently did. And the length of the pitstop isn't clear, although using July 7th, Weather Underground indicates that sunset was about 9:56 pm CEST, twilight was until almost midnight, and sunrise was about 5:36 a, CEST. And we know from the video that teams were arriving that late at the Atomium.

that's true but from what ive heard, the tin tin task was an option but since everyone chose and finished the speedo task, cbs "kept" it to use for this leg and portray them both as regular tasks or else the press release wouldn't have said "speedo detour".

The racers had the clue of the detour, meaning they would have read that clue. I don't think producers would put them that clue again just because "cbs kept it".

The press release said speedo detour because it WAS a detour.

I suppose it's possible that the Tin Tin movie producers paid TAR to include a Tin Tin task to promote their movie. The TAR producers put it in as detour option and nobody chose it. So, the TAR producers quickly decided to stick it in at the beginning of the next leg as a route info task in order to make the Tin Tin people happy. It really had no effect on the leg since they all bunched up together at the airport anyway.

The only problem I have with this scenario is figuring out why all the teams would choose the Speedos over the Tin Tin task. The Tin Tin task looks at least as fast or faster than the Speedos and you wouldn't have to flaunt your bodies to the world.

I was surprised to see the text instructing teams on exactly who had to perform the Roadblock in Panama. I always assumed that they printed all the clues in the US and just brought them along with them, but they must have printed some in Panama (unless they were shipped quickly from the US).

They have done this the last few times, being sure that the RB's were balanced going into the finale. Good point on the printing. They usually stay in large well equipped hotels, prob getting something printed or overnight expressed would be easy.

Oh come on, the production folks likely have printers with them if for no other reason than to use them to print those sheets in case of last minute changes in the legs and tasks. If they're telling teams who has to do the last roadblock, it's an 50-50 as to whether they're making an on the spot change or not. And even if a substitute clue has foreign alphabets in the clue, both Miscrosoft Word and Corel Word Perfect have ways to insert such characters in a document. (Corel WP even has Arabic, Hebrew, and other non-Western character sets.)

And portable printers are not that bulky or heavy, either.

And I keep track of the roadblock breakdown during each leg, and the teams have gotten to a 50-50 spilt of the roadblock a couple of weeks before Panama. All Panama does is absolutely confirm that the Bowling Moms rule, as modified for a 13th roadblock, is alive and well.

long time reader, first time responder. =)
i feel like this has to be said though.
no one cheated to get into the final three, but boy, was it unfair.  in the end there is no way to find out who would've made it to the finals after figuring it out on their own, and i guess there have been unfair situations in the past [rob and amber getting help from every local ever, for one. or bad cab drivers for another. or remember those brothers whose car flipped over and injured their camera man?] those all sucked. but in the end, andy and tommy lost because of something that wasn't their fault, or a mistake they made. yeah, they went to the wrong place, but two other teams were going to do that. and no one asked the cab driver to call ernie/cindy or marcus/amani's cab drivers on the race, which makes me mad because there's no one in particular for me to be mad at [at least when the cowboys lost, i was angry that those stupid brothers who did win were such assholes]. so i don't think the elimination was fair, but at the same time, there's no way to make it fair, and i felt like a lot of posts were about how andy/tommy messed up, but i didn't think that was even true.
for the record, i did not want andy/tommy to win, and they are not my favorite team, so i think that this is the logical way to look at it, and generally, opinions get in the way of viewing the race as fair or not.

sorry for preaching, hope this makes sense and it's a respectful evaluation. =)

I don't think it was unfair... maybe unfortunate and unlucky, but not unfair. Besides, A/T got their big share of good luck winning three prizes because other teams messed up. That's the race, that's the game.

speaking of the tin tin task; everyone chose the speedos bc the tin tin clue was very vague and could have been difficult. from what i was told, it said something along the lines of "dress up as a comic character and solve a missing person case".

The only problem I have with this scenario is figuring out why all the teams would choose the Speedos over the Tin Tin task. The Tin Tin task looks at least as fast or faster than the Speedos and you wouldn't have to flaunt your bodies to the world.

It's not that hard to believe. They didn't know when choosing it that it involved changing into those getups. Since everyone was there teams were wary of changing back and leaving to do another unknown thing by themselves.
Also, I don't think it was as hard as they made it seem like. Bill and Cathi were the last to leave and they didn't lose that much time.

OK, if the clue was that vague, I can see why teams would have chosen the more specifically described Speedo task.

The only thing I feel strange in this episode is that so many Belgians don't seem to know who Tintin is. :cmas18

I think everything happens for a reason, there are a lot of twists in the race... Being in front and far away from the pack to reach pit stop is risky: it's either you win first place for getting the pit stop direction right or lose as teams behind get to see/help each other and luckily they did thru a cab driver... The three teams in the finals makes the TAR 19 winner so unpredictable, if A/T were there, other teams have very slim chance of winning.

if A/T were there, other teams have very slim chance of winning.

I disagree with that statement because anyone can win and many unexpected teams do win Amazing Race finales. Just look at last season and go back to how few predicted LaKeisha and Jennifer as the winners. Same with AR5 and Chip/Kim getting a major upset victory. Taxi drivers' knowledge of the area becomes so critical. Witness the cab driver in Maui torpedoing the chances of Cara and Jaime in AR14, who otherwise would probably have won. Witness the not-telecast winning taxi ride between Oakland International Airport and the Grateful Dead House in San Francisco for Eric and Danielle in AR11. I'm sure there are more examples; these are the ones that are easiest to remember.

So, that means that Andy and Tommy if they had made the F3 would have have a minor advantage, but not more. I estimate they would have had a 40% chance of winning AR19 vs. perhaps 30% each for 2 other teams.

And for the record, I think it is absolutely even for the three F3 teams. Normally in most races that are not Amazing Races the edge would go to Marcus and Amani since they live in the Atlanta area. However, the curse of the home field advantage is well known in Amazing Race finales (Frank and Margaretta in AR1, Wil in AR2, Jill and Thomas in AR17). To the best of my knowledge, the only team with a home field advantage that has ever won an Amazing Race were Nat and Kat. When they won, Nat was practicing in Scottsdale AZ but formerly from the Los Angeles and Kat was from the Los Angeles area so from my point of view that qualified for a home field advantage.

I don't know if this the correct thread to ask this but does anyone know how to edit a wikipedia article?
Because the TAR 19 wikipedia article states that the title quote for this episode was said by Andy, when it was clearly Tommy who said it. We heard it for the first time as they were in a taxi on their way to find TinTin.
There is another crucial mistake in the article and it's in Leg 5 Thailand. It says that the RB took place in Wat Chalong but in reality was Wat Chanathikaram.

The Amazing Race 19 article is semi protect locked and can only be edited by certain users. You can post a suggestion on the talk page and maybe they will fix it.

Kiki,

You are right about Wat Chanathikaram. However, my recollection is that the actual CBS telecast subscript said "Wat Chalong". Perhaps a reason for that is revealed in the Wikipedia entry for episode 5:

Chalong, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province (Wat Chanathikaram) >Roadblock (Reassemble the spirit house)<

Chalong is the area of Phuket where Wat Chanathikaram is found.

actually if you go the episode around 6:30 you can hear Phil himself saying the name of the temple, Wat Chanathikaram. But this is not the tread to discuss it.

I don't know if we should be arguing about this here, :lol3:

Anyways, I'm not saying otherwise. Just that 2012-1929=83 years.
