Okay. They do not give me good vibe. Gives me a boring feel and erm... BJ and Tyler feel.

I do not want for them to make it far but I feel they will. (I don't know?)

I'm going to pray they don't make the Final 6..

I'm usually right about first hand impression whether I'm going to like a team or not.. and this is the only team thus far that I feel "obligated" to dislike.

OOOOOOPS! Hopefully my opinions of them changes! :hearts:

You hit the nail on the head.

Without looking to the video, hated them. But since I watched it, kinda makes me feel that there is something interesting to them. <3

Anyway, I think this team will end up as my least favourites. They just don't seem too interesting.  :umn:

Dumb jocks. They should be able to do the physical challenges, but will be stumped by any challenge that requires brain power.

They were the first team done with the word puzzle task at the very beginning.

It looked like they were randomly selecting umbrellas and hoping that they would find the right one - not figuring out the word puzzle. I'll have to watch it again.

Post by: Prophet on September 26, 2011, 12:37:31 PM
Yeah, actually all the teams were doing that. I found it odd too, I guess it's wasn't what I was expecting.
Title: Re: TAR 19: Andy Finch & Tommy Czeschin (Friends/former Olympic snowboarders)
Post by: theschnauzers on September 26, 2011, 05:24:28 PM
Teams had to open the umbrellas in order to see the letters on them.  The correct umbrellas were randomly placed, so there really wasn't an organized way to do it.

Later teams had the advantage of knowing they had to find the two vowels as part of it, so that saved the trouble of taking every umbrella to Phil.

I believe some of the teams, like the snowboarders actually figured out what they had to find (Tai-) and were saving themselves time and too many trips to Phil. So actually knowing the answer did come into the play for some of the teams.

What do you hope to accomplish by running The Race (other then winning one million bucks)? Besides winning… the experience, traveling the world, competing, and getting to know the other teams.

Wow, I didn't find it that serious. :ascared They sounded like they were trying to say they didn't think it was creepy or weird.

I thought it was kind of an odd thing to insert anyway, it sounded like the producers led them down that path for some reason.

Sorry...I like them. I like their spirit and their kindness to everyone they meet and their obvious enjoyment of every single day.

I did not take their comments at the Spirit Houses amiss, although I liked how Jennifer replied much better. But to my ear, it was a choppy heavily edited sound bite, and we know that can change almost anything around. I think that HOW they have raced and the respect they have shown each other and every single person they have met along the way says far more than that one sound bite.

Well said peach <3 I love the teams that enjoy the world and the people but also have a drive to win and do well on the tasks. Sort of a combo of the cowboys and the Chos  Andy and Tommy have a similar attitude to Gary and Mallory which I love.
It still seems like production was trying to stir up a controversy about them in that episode. The way they threw in those unusual scenes was almost like they knew people wouldn't like it. Heavily editing some quotes to make a story is unseemly imo.

People shouldn't expect them to just give a win away to Ernie and Cindy just because they wanted them to. What if that footrace had been a footrace for elimination? Or a million dollars? Uh uh. If Ernie and Cindy wanted to win the leg, they shouldn't have stood around so long wasting time after using their Express Pass.

The snowboarders may be eliminated next leg because of this, so I'm prepared for that. But I think people that hate this team are missing out on a lot. Don't hate them just because they're an all male team who dominates or just because their religious affiliation may offend you. They are good at tasks, friendly to everyone, and don't fight with each other or other teams. They practice what they preach. IMO, there's no real reason to hate them.

Rant over.

I couldn't agree more Prophet. I think they're genuine, likeable, courteous, respectful and fun. I agree that they've probably been given a favourable edit but to be even considered for a good edit, you have to be good people to start with. I definitely think they'll become the new cowboys in terms of fan popularity, but that's not going to make me feel guilty about rooting for them!

Definitely, I've NEVER liked any M/M team (well, I liked Derek & Drew since I started watching TAR 3 when the episode 9 was broadcast in my country, not much to choose from).

This team is definitely, not only the best M/M team (IMHO) ever in the race, but one of the best teams overall. They're doing what should be done in this TV programme. I recall it is called The Amazing RACE, and, even though they enjoy each of the tasks they do (andthey rock them too), they always keep on racing with a positive message: "Treating other people the best you can will give you the best result", they never have any harsh words to anybody (they even crashed in Leg 05 with the School thing) but didn't give up nor say bad things to the teacher. They're respectful, they're competitive, they're kind... they're racers, and above all, they're excellent people.

In case I'd race against them, I'd really be awestruck, and I really think that U-Turning them would not be successful.

I don't get the M/M hatred. When I like a team, it's irrespective of their gender. I like these guys, just as I liked Mel/Mike, Nat/Kat, Tyler/James, Lauren/Duke, BQs, BJ/Tyler, Eric/Jeremy, Don/Nick, Ron/Christina, TK/Rachel, the Chas, Ken/Gerrard,...you get the idea. These guys seemed fun & friendly to locals, plus i hate infighting (although given the stressful situations, it's inevitable).

What I meant is that I don't really get an instant love for any M/M team. I think that teams with a girl on it are more lovely, :lol3: IDK why, but I never liked M/M teams, :duno:  and this one's the best,

I disagree with your point of it being predictable. There was only one leg that they won where it was obvious they'd get first, and that was the first Thailand leg.

If teams had read their clues and didn't make simple mistakes, Andy & Tommy would only have two first places under their belt right now. The main reason they get all this hate is because they are a strong M/M team who just so happen to be lucky when it comes to finishing first. I wish people would look past that and view them as a fun team who are actually working together and enjoying the places they visit. Kind of like Bill & Cathi minus the age and relationship.

They are my absolute favorite team this year!!!  I love that they are committed Christians, that they maintain a positive attitude regardless of the circumstances, and that they try their best to win every leg.   It is certainly not their fault that others have been making critical mistakes that cost them first place.  They kind of remind me of Jet and Cord in that way, just really great people with really great attitudes!

Hoping for an Andy & Tommy first place win!!!

Yeah but the passed Ernie and Cindy!

I like them as people, and I like them as racers. But it is my strong strong opinion that famous people should not be on the Amazing Race! To me, the Amazing Race is for the average person who couldn't do this. As much as I like Andy and Tommy (Olympic Snowboarders), The globetrotters (Herb and Nate), and Amani and Marcus (Ex-NFL) - I can't and won't ever cheer for them to win. They've all traveled before to other countries. I want the Amazing Race experience to get to other people!!

Yes, I agree. I would extend your argument especially to former Big Brother and Survivor contestants. It is particularly difficult for regular folks to compete against anyone with worldwide instant face recognition, as the locals try to help them preferentially.

Snowboarders :jam: They are awesome! I am glad that they have won so many legs, I wish I had a new Mustang!

They are my favorite team remaining, I love how they are so positive and so good at tasks and navigation. The fact that they have never gotten lost has helped them win a lot of legs. Because of that they may even be stronger competitors than the cowboys who I have always considered the strongest team ever.

Andy and Tommy do have the best navigational skills of any team in AR19 and should be commended for that. However, will they survive Panama?

Well I don't hate them as such, it's just they're not as entertaining as the other teams and they're constant domination is making it predictable and kinda boring. Hat's off to them for being good racers, though.

I think it's all too simple. We have those who consider any Male/Male team anathema. I could name names of such RFF members but I won't. The fact that they are Olympic athletes also causes some to not want them to win because they have an unfair advantage.

I like Andy/Tommy because they have a loose, breezy style and are superior at navigation, which I consider the key Amazing Race skill.  If they make the F3 I expect they have the highest probability of the 3 teams to win it.

I agree, people hate them because their a strong M/M team.

Just look at the latest "who will be eliminated next" poll. Two people are already jumping on the band wagon that they must go next because the other teams are more likable.

I don't see them as the invincible team. They're a team focused in enjoying every second of the race, not making any mistakes, knowing what to do, and trying to be kind to locals so as to get further, and that's a kind of strategy I think I'd follow if I was in the race, really. I think that's it, to race because of the race itself.

Sure it is, but compare their 4 to Andy & Tommy's 12 (at last check). I'm willing to bet at least 6 of those were based on liking them the least.

I'm actually glad they're gone, don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Andy and Tommy. Hell I was a huge fan of them early in the season. However their comment in the 5th leg (Indonesia) really turned me off.

"God is definitely greater than the temple. There is only one true god"

Now now, I'm all about being devoted to your religion (even though I don't have one), but disrespecting another religion on live tv like that is unacceptable and almost sickening. How would you feel if muslims/buddhists started saying your god doesn't exist and that it's all fake?

I'm sure if was just a Freudian slip and they didn't mean to be disrespectful like that, they're obviously two very nice and well brought up guys, but it doesn't change the fact that they said those words.

Another thing I really dislike is their constant first place finished, there's nothing wrong with a team being strong, but too much is too much. I know it's stupid to think badly of a team because they perform so strong, but I just can't help it. And the constant winning seemed to have given them a bit of a cocky attitude. I hope the elimination will help them be humbled a bit.

In all, their elimination in 4th was perfect, and it gives an extremely well balanced final 3, the winner is anybody's guess.

(If these two made it to the final three, it's pretty safe to say they'll win
...
...
...
...
then again, there's a mental challenge)

Amazing Race's Andy and Tommy: We Trusted Our Taxi Driver Too Much

Quote
After dominating The Amazing Race  this season - winning six legs - Andy Finch  and Tommy Czeschin  seemed like locks for the final. But taxi luck reared its head again: As they squandered their huge lead, the cab drivers of the other three teams chatted and drove them all to the Pit Stop, ensuring that the former Olympic snowboarders will get the boot - with the dubious honor of having the highest average placement at elimination in all 19 seasons, natch. "It was definitely ironic that our lead ended up hurting us," Tommy tells TVGuide.com. "But it's true reality. Those guys were just in the right place at the right time with the right taxi drivers, and we weren't." See what else they have to say about their surprising elimination, if they got their Mustangs yet, and which team they want to race against.

You obviously were unaware of the group taxi driver group discussion. What was your reaction when you saw it last night?
Tommy: It was crazy watching the show last night. We weren't the only ones to not figure it out off the bat. It made us feel a little better about not getting the clue the first time. Our driver was just not in the loop.

Some fans think it's not fair that two teams made the final on luck, but taxi luck has always been part of the race.
Andy: Yeah, taxi luck is a huge part of the race! Going into it, we knew that some taxis were better than others and that could be the end of you. In this case, it was. We told our guy to go to Balboa, and we passed through Balboa and he took us to the Panama Canal. I don't know why! [Laughs] I guess he thought we were tourists. We couldn't really communicate with him. We were just like, "I guess we got to see the Panama Canal. That's cool." I think what's really neat about this show is it shows how people deal with life. Life isn't always fair. We all know people who've had cancer and it's not fair when people get cancer. It's silly to compare that, but it's life and you've got to deal with it. ... Those teams got some extra information and took it. Good for them. We would've done the same thing if we were in the group of taxis and we didn't know where we were going. Some people might think they cheated, but they didn't do anything wrong. They followed the rules. There's nothing in the clue about the taxis talking.

Why didn't you ask your cabbie to go back to the square when you saw that you were passing Balboa?
Tommy: We trusted our taxi driver a little too much. He was super confident that he was going to take us where we wanted to go. But that guy had no idea. [Laughs] There was a lot lost in translation. There were times where we had taxi drivers and we didn't trust them enough. You just don't know.

How much time did you lose in total doing that?
Tommy: We probably lost a good 40-45 minutes. Even at that point, I think we were within the pack, but then we made a couple more wrong directions. From there, we went to the statue of Balboa. It was like we were on a sightseeing tour. We went back to the square and then we followed the wet paint footprint to another square area, and it was just a sign that said there would be construction in the area.

Did you think you were last or were you hoping other teams made the same mistake?
Andy: We didn't think we were last. We knew how hard that clue was, so you just never know. There were two teams who didn't know the clue, so they could've done the same thing we did and gone on a wild goose chase. They could've driven around more than we did.

How disappointing was it to get eliminated after dominating the race? Even Phil  said he expected you to be in the final.
Andy: There were so many things that could've taken us out earlier in the race. We were lucky we didn't get U-Turned. We just really felt like we were blessed to have gone that far. We got to go to all the places the finalists went basically. We have all the stamps in our passports. I think that's the biggest prize on this show - getting to travel the world and seeing the different places.

One of the best moments was when you ran down Ernie  and Cindy  for first place.
Tommy: Yeah! We went all out. We knew Ernie and Cindy were about five minutes ahead of us. We paced ourselves just enough to catch up with them and when we saw them, we really turned it on. That was a serious run right there, but it was worth every step.
Andy: That was hard! We like Ernie and Cindy, and we have no problem sharing the wealth of winning the prizes and stuff, but you can't just give it to anybody. You've got to give it everything you have. When we saw them, there was no way we thought we could catch them. Poor Cindy, man! I don't know if they showed all the bruises she had. She had a really bad wreck with the bike taxis. She'd been through it. We felt bad running them down, but we knew we couldn't give it to them. If they beat us, great! Then they would've beaten us at us trying our best.

Amazing Race's Justin and Jennifer: It was a "huge mistake" not biking back

You guys got a lot of sweet prizes. Did you get your Mustangs yet?
Andy: [Laughs] We're working on that! ... I'm going black on black. How about you, Tommy?
Tommy: Yeah, I mean, you've got to get a black Mustang. ... It's been super fun watching it [with our wives] and having it be a surprise. One of the times was when we were running with the beds in Africa. My wife was saying, when Justin  and Jennifer  checked in first, "Man, couldn't you have picked up the pace and beat them?" I was just holding it in and waiting for the classic "however" from Phil. All the trips, the cash, the Mustangs - we really felt like we ran a great race. It's awesome.

I think a lot of people would agree you guys are shoo-ins for All-Stars or another Unfinished Business. Would you come back?
Andy: I definitely would!
Tommy: Heck yeah! Absolutely! I've been looking at some of the chats and stuff, and people sound like they want the cowboys and us. That would be so fun. I would love to do that!
Andy: How about you race with your wife and I race with my wife, and we'll compete against each other?
Tommy: I'm down with whatever!

You're both not competing anymore, so what are you up to now?
Tommy: I'm coaching with U.S. Snowboarding, so I'm out in Colorado for early season stuff. The Grand Prix is this weekend. Dew Tour is the following weekend. And just trying to stay warm out here in Colorado.
Andy: I had two major shoulder surgeries six weeks ago and eight weeks ago, so I'm just healing up. I'm taking time to get the body strong again so I can do some more filming. I'm doing some commentating and some traveling.

'The Amazing Race' Andy, Tommy Q&A: 'Life is an adventure every day'

Quote
While Andy Finch and Tommy Czeschin seemed to be unstoppable - winning six legs of The Amazing Race - things started going wrong once they made it to Panama. While they were the first pair to complete their shoe-making roadblock, the professional snowboarders made a wrong turn during the pit stop when they misunderstood a clue and turned up at the wrong place. Unfortunately, the mistake cost them the game and after being the last to arrive at the check-in point, they were eliminated and sent home.

Digital Spy spoke to Andy (30) and Tommy (32) to hear about their travels, their laid-back demeanors and who they'd like to see win the competition.

What was the highlight of your experience?
Andy: "The highlight for me was getting the cultural experiences. Thailand in a boat was sensory overload - going to those islands and being in the water. Then going to Africa and the rich culture they have. Despite the fact that their average age expectancy is 37 years, they're just so rich with dancing and singing."
Tommy: "I think Thailand was so rad, just being in boats and on the water, navigating on the islands. Africa was also super rad. It was super fun getting to know the other teams and getting to hang with them. You'd be racing on your own and then get to a train or a bus station or airport where everyone was and get talking. That was really neat."

Was there a particular city or country that you plan on returning to in the future?
Tommy: "Indonesia, I'd love to go back to and get out of the city and maybe go to some of the different islands. And definitely Thailand."
Andy: "Ireland was on my bucket list and it's the first leg we won. I thought, no way! That was the place I really wanted to go and we won it."

You guys were notoriously relaxed throughout the competition. Do you think your laid-back attitude helped or hurt you in the long run?
Andy: "It was definitely a blessing. We had one strategy going into this race and it was to face it in God's word and lean on him and give him our faith. Every day, before every leg, we would surrender in prayer and give it over to him. We were relaxed in every leg and you could see that."
Tommy: "Just being chill about everything and getting along during every leg really helped us. We didn't do a lot of arguing and worked well together. Every leg, we just gave up to God and it was just awesome. We had a great time doing it."

Any plans to embark on any other big adventures together in the future?
Andy: "Heck yeah! Life is an adventure every day, whether it's at home or traveling. I love doing stuff and trying to tackle things that I haven't done before."

Did you prepare at all for the race prior to beginning?
Tommy: "We had a little bit of time before going once we found out we were cast to do the race. We would mountain bike and got together a couple times and got backpacks, ran on the beach, paddle boarded and surfed. We did train a little bit."
Andy: "Yeah, and wearing the packs to see where we would get wear spots. When you're running around, those things are bouncing around and you're going to get sore spots. Part of training is building up the skin."

After losing your way and heading towards Balboa, was there a point when you realized you might well be out?
Tommy: "One thing you learn in The Amazing Race is to never give up. We really just had an idea that we were coming in last, but you don't know 100%. We ran it and we didn't give up. We kept chipping away at it until we got the location of the pit stop and we gave it 100% until we hit that part."

Having been in the lead for so long, Sandy put your success down to luck. Was it luck, or was it skill?
Andy: "That's hard to say, you know? One thing that did go well is that Tommy and I were a good team. We took to each other, we respected each other and that made us strong and that counted for a lot of it. Though some of it was way out of our control, so whether you call it luck or God's will... I think God was running with us. I don't know if he helps with that, but he showed his blessings all along and made strengths out of our weaknesses."

You really loved the culture in Panama. Was that a particularly special place?
Tommy: "Panama was rad! It was so fun to travel around the world and see all the different locations. You're in the city one day and on the coast another. It's just so cool what a great mix of locations you go to. But Panama was really cool, so if anyone ever needs a tour guide, Andy and I definitely know our way around Panama now."

Was it more difficult to come in last after having been on such a high previously with six consecutive wins?
Andy: "It wasn't super hard because we could have been eliminated way earlier. We'd made quite a few mistakes earlier on in the race and we felt blessed to make it that far. You just never know. We had a pretty good idea we were the last team but we didn't know for sure. We ran like we were running to win. You take the good with the bad - we were blessed sometimes, and sometimes we got a bad break. It was a bad break that time. I feel so blessed to have made it as far as we did and see so much of the world."

What was the hardest part of the Amazing Race experience that you didn't anticipate prior to competing?
Tommy: "For us, some of the hardest were the mental tasks, but we were able to get through mostly all of them. But the traveling... just getting worn down and all that was tough."
Andy: "One thing I didn't anticipate was how hard it would be to book travel last minute. I book travel all the time and have a lot of experience with it but I was shocked. It's really hard to book last minute tickets."

Who would you like to see win?
Andy: "We definitely made friends with all of the teams. Everyone was such a joy. We really hit it off with Marcus and Amani. Marcus is really a hoot - we were cracking up. He and his wife Amani are just really good together and have a great relationship. We also had a neat time with Sandy and Jeremy and all the teams. We have a great respect for everyone."
Tommy: "All the teams were pretty rad. We got to know them really early on and it was a great group of teams."

Oh I'm not shure about that :res:

I was pretty sure BJ and Tyler wouldn't get a shot at all-stars because they weren't the most popular team around. I sincerely believe in my heart that they do check from resources such as online forums/chatrooms for fan favourites and definitely know that it is not the general consensus that people generally like BJ and Tyler during the time of TAR Allstars casting. This is unlike the case for Jet and Cord, where they had raving fans from all over the world as compared to the Hippies. (And it is very hard not to like the cowboys in TAR 16 with teams like Carol and Brandy, Brent and Caite, Louie and Michael in the F5) This is in comparison to Andy and Tommy, where they have their fair share of fans, but also many haters as well.

I am more incline to think Bill and Cathi gets another shot rather than them.

They're gracious losers , but like BJ and Tyler, I believe they won't get another shot at Allstars.

I was saying that about Andy & Tommy

Until now, the cowboys have been my favorite team ever.

I have to say though, that based on their interviews above, Andy and Tommy have surpassed even Jet & Cord for me.  They truly seem to be awesome young men who are commited to following Christ in everything they do.

WAY TO GO, ANDY & TOMMY!!!!    I believe you achieved your goals in this race and even more importantly are running well in the most important race of all!!!

Here's hoping for Unfinished Business II...

ELIMINATION INTERVIEW: ANDY & TOMMY

Quote
Rebecca L.: How did it feel to win six legs and then come so close to the final leg and find out you were eliminated? Any regrets?
Andy: Definitely no regrets. We felt blessed to win six legs. That was way more than we could have dreamed of. It felt great to make it 11 legs. We we’re so grateful.
Tommy: Winning six legs was absolutely amazing. We got awesome prizes, trips and cash. Seeing places that we would not normally travel to was great. It was an awesome experience.

Laura A.: What was your favorite challenge? And where was your favorite place you went to?
Tommy: My favorite challenge was getting to drive the mustang. My favorite place was probably Thailand. Getting to navigate those islands and doing the coral challenge was cool.
Andy: Thailand was definitely sensory overload. Africa was awesome as well. The dancing, the music… it was rich in culture. It made the race really special for me. The coral was probably my favorite challenge because it wasn’t easy and we had to concur it.

Robert  H.: Did you guys think you were going to win it all after dominating so many previous legs if the race??
Tommy: Our main goal was to make it to the finals and do our best. Our goal was to learn from our mistakes and make every leg better… Which we were just shy of.
Andy: You never know in the Race. We’ve seen strong teams get eliminated so many times. Anything can happen.

Aaron Q:  Out of the remaining teams who was your Favorite?
Andy: we really enjoyed all the teams. We didn’t have anyone that we disliked, but we really hit it off with Marcus and Amani. They are amazing and such a great example of what a marriage should be like.
Tommy: They are great role models. They are so solid and such an inspiration.

Irene M.: How has this race made a difference with your faith and friendship?
Tommy: It has definitely grown our friendship. It is going to be a lifelong friendship. As far as our faith goes… this is reality. They put you in challenges and you have to get through ‘em. That is the same way with life and you just have to realize that Jesus is there for you, you just have to let him in.
Andy: Running this Race… God strengthened my Race. We would surrender each day to him and he would carry us through. In our weakest points we found strength in our faith. It was like someone tapped me on the shoulder when we were at the orphanage and told me to turn around.

Are they a definite pick for the next All-Stars? Since they got a confessional at the end and weren't part of the final three (Like Gary & Mallory from TAR17)?

I would think they are definite contenders for it.
They did indeed get their moment in the spot at the end. I think more 'offensive' teams have been on the previous All-stars series and their overall strength and appeal will get them a long way (depending obviously on the teams that will be on the next series before we get another All-stars one.  :cmaslol )

I also think they might give Bill and Cathi another chance - also depending on who will be on the next few series but if anyone will be asked from this series I'm thinking it's either of these teams or both. But most likely A & T because they were such strong and relaxed racers. :)

It's premature to speculate on who will be in the next All-Star season since I do not expect one until about AR25 to be telecast in the fall of 2014. However, there are many other teams who I would give the nod to over Andy/Tommy, including:

Colin/Christie of AR5
Brook/Claire of AR17
Ken/Tina of AR13

Room will have to be left for teams from AR20, AR21, AR22, AR23, and AR24 if my hypothesis on when the next All Star season will be is accurate. Of course it is possible that it may not be until AR27 or AR30.

“We Were Out of the Loop" – Reality News Online's Exclusive Interview with The Amazing Race 19's Andy & Tommy
by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 12/12/2011
Andy & Tommy (right) won six legs of The Amazing Race and seemed such shoe-ins to make the finals that the remaining three teams cheered and celebrated their loss. What do Andy & Tommy think of that reaction? How did their faith shape their race experience? And what do they think was their weakest feature as a team? All this and more inside!

Reality News Online: Hi, Andy & Tommy! Thanks for talking to Reality News Online! How are you doing?
Andy: Oh, we’re doing good. Wasabi!
RNO: What made you decide to apply for The Amazing Race?
Andy: We have my wife to thank for that. It was her idea. I actually applied with her and she was the force behind it. We were definitely fans of the show. And Tommy applied six years ago, right?
Tommy: Yeah, like five years ago.
Andy: We’re both fans of the show and when it came up that [the producers] wanted me to go on the show with another Olympic snowboarder – Tommy Sheen’s my man.
RNO: You were definitely the powerhouse team of the race, but were you surprised at the reactions of the final three teams when they found out you weren’t going to be in the finals?
Andy: Yeah, they were stoked that we weren’t in it. I was watching some extra clips on the CBS website and Phil was asking them, “Who’s really excited that Tommy & Andy are not going to be in the finale?” All of them were just cheering and raising their hands and carrying on.
RNO: Well, that’s a compliment. You both excelled at most of the challenges on the race, but the ones with more of a puzzly bent didn’t seem your forte. Why do you think that was?
Andy: Because we’re snowboarders. We throw ourselves off cliffs and bang our heads on the ground.
Tommy: Our brains have been through the ringer.
Andy: When most people go to college, we were travelling the world, snowboarding – doing the X-Games and the Olympics. That’s where our education is – we got our master’s in snowboarding and travelling.
Tommy: We knew where we were going to be weak going into it.
RNO: You had a comfortable lead going to the final challenge before the Pit Stop this past leg. But the challenge to find the Pit Stop’s location looked incredibly difficult. Did you try to look at the skirts or did you only concentrate on the jewelry?
Andy: We searched those girls head to toe. We looked all over their skirts, their medallions, their hair, the bands that held their hair up… We looked on their eyelids. We thought for sure it was on the girls, but we couldn’t find it.
It turned out Panama Viejo was only on one of the dresses and you could only see it when she held her skirt open. To see it, you almost had to be standing back about 20 feet in front of the right girl when she stopped dancing.
RNO: So only one girl’s skirt had the answer? Yikes!
Andy: Yes, just one girl. It was a very, very tough challenge. Jeremy is the only one who was able to get it correct – and he didn’t even read the dress! Jeremy drew a picture off of the belt and then his taxi driver knew where to go from there. It was a very, very tough challenge.
RNO: It looked that way. How far out of your way did you travel looking for “Balboa?”
Tommy: We did a full tour of Panama City.
Andy: Yeah, we can tell you where all the sites are.
Tommy: One way it was probably 25 minutes to the Panama Canal which, on the way, we passed the town of Balboa. We thought we were doing good and then when the guy drove past we were like, “Why’s he going past this?”
We saw the same building that Jeremy drew a picture of and, since the word Balboa was there, we thought it was a building that had to do with [explorer] Balboa. Then we went to the town and we started to see Balboa on a bunch of buildings. Balboa was just way too broad.
Then we realized the guy was taking us to the Panama Canal.
Andy: At the Panama Canal we talked to the guy who sent us to the statue [of Balboa]. We felt pretty good about that one. Then we got there and realized that wasn’t it.
RNO: Did your taxi driver ever get into the chat loop with the other three taxi drivers?
Tommy: No, definitely not. We were out of the loop.
RNO: Even though the other teams didn’t want them to do so, the other taxi drivers were sharing information with each other.
Andy: That was funny how you could tell they didn’t want [the drivers] to share information.
RNO: How far behind the other teams did you get to the Pit Stop? Do you know?
Tommy: I don’t really know. It had to be a little bit. It was one of those things where Andy and I knew we could have been in last, but we absolutely weren’t going to give up. We went 110% until we figured out that challenge and were standing on the mat in front of Phil. We were a little bit back, but we ran as hard and fast as we could.
RNO: We saw a couple of times on the race that your faith is important to both of you. How did you feel travelling to sites that are holy or significant to other religions?
Andy: It was cool to see some of the architecture and buildings – I think it’s part of the cultural experience. People have asked if we got weird vibes, and the answer is no. We’re sound in our faith. We believe for a reason. God has shown his love to us, and I took a stance to make a point for what we believe in.
Tommy: It was definitely cool to go see all of the manmade stuff – the temples and all that. But I believe that our God is bigger than a temple or a place. It was definitely really neat to see all that. I just believe our God is bigger than any temples or buildings.
Andy: That goes for Christian churches too.
Tommy: Absolutely!
RNO: Beside being in excellent shape, how do you think being Olympians affected your race?
Andy: I think being Olympians, we have a lot of heart and determination – that’s what got us into the Olympics. We didn’t take no for an answer. We keep going until we reach the goal, you know?
Tommy: Just being Olympians in the U.S. The U.S. has the deepest, best group of riders. So, to make the Olympics for snowboarding in the U.S. you gotta be crazy determined and give it your all.
All of our experience travelling and being professional snowboarders for 15+ years definitely came into play.
Andy: And not crumbling under pressure!
RNO: What was the smartest thing you did on the race?
Andy: I don’t know if we can take credit for that. Can we, Tommy? (laughs) The smartest thing we did was turning around and seeing the sign to give all our money to the orphanage.
RNO: And what was the most memorable moment on the race?
Andy: I really enjoyed Thailand and navigating through those islands. Also, just experiencing the different culture in Africa. Every location we went was different and rad in its own sort of way. And just meeting all the different teams – it was a great bunch of teams this year. The whole thing was a great experience!
RNO: Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers about yourselves or the race?
Andy: The race is a mirror image of how you deal with real life. It’s a really cool thing. A lot of people are pretty harsh and negative when they see what goes down. Those are the people who are going to struggle on the race. You gotta keep your head up, keep good attitudes, and keep plugging away – even when it’s a challenge.
Tommy: The Amazing Race is true reality. It’s like life in that you can get through anything – you just can’t give up – whether it’s in life or the race. People can get through anything that’s thrown at them.
RNO: Thank you for talking to me today. I have to say I didn’t expect to talk to you until after the finale!
Andy: Thank you!

I liked them fairly well, but I was actually kind of glad when they got eliminated because it made things less predictable.  :cmaslol

Just thought I'd add, one thing I thought was interesting from their interviews was when they said that in the Malawi leg where they beat Ernie & Cindy to the Pit Stop, Cindy was bruised badly from a bike wreck during the Roadblock. Andy & Tommy absolutely deserved that win and I'm not arguing with that, but that does make me understand Cindy's point of view more & make me forgive that one quote of "Please let us win, boys!" Put together with her asthma, the running must have been REALLY rough on her.  :cmas15

Anyway, back to Andy & Tommy...I'd agree that they're a shoo-in for any future fan favorites season, they do have the fan base and are competitive. I'd definitely like to see them back!  :cmas22

The fact that they weren't just mentioned in the elimination thingy at the final, they got their own 15 seconds explaining why they lost makes me agree with you.

Yea. Zev & Justin too.
I think they normally put a bit of screentime for the last team eliminated. TAR17 was an exception because Gallory was already on TAR18 and Chad & Stephanie has just been engaged.

I liked them on the race, particularly Andy.  Not just because they were competitive but as they could be funny too.  And it does help to have someone who has fun on the race, like Mallory in 18 or Brook in 17.

With reality show contestants I try and put aside the snippits of political/religious or social views you get, because I think the general character of someone is often more important than those things and you are never about to agree on every world issue with someone.  The God stuff didn't mean much to me, and they could probably seem insensitive to other religions in something that was said but really I didn't get the feeling it was that important in judging their general character.
