The Emmy noms are out and TAR is nominated in 7 categories including the big two for series and host. These are the same 7 categories they were nominated in last year, which was also the first time TAR went home with ZERO Emmys.

Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program
Outstanding Cinematography for Reality Programming
Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming
Outstanding Picture Editing for Reality Programming
Outstanding Sound Editing for Nonfiction Programming (Single or Multi-Camera)

The competition:
Reality competition: CBS’ “The Amazing Race,” Fox’s “American Idol,” ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” Lifetime’s “Project Runway, Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” Bravo’s ”Top Chef.”
Host for reality competition: Tom Bergeron for “Dancing With the Stars”; Cat Deeley for “So You Think You Can Dance”; Phil Keoghan for “The Amazing Race”; Jeff Probst for “Survivor”; Ryan Seacrest for “American Idol.”
-
For the categories that are based on individual episodes, TAR's was "You Don't Get Paid Unless You Win" (TAR 18, episode 8 Varanasi. India).
-
Yeah I still don't get that choice.

For the categories that are based on individual episodes, TAR's was "You Don't Get Paid Unless You Win" (TAR 18, episode 8 Varanasi. India).
Varanasi was good mswood, why not??
-
I think there were better, more exciting episodes than Varanasi definitely.
If TAR17 were in HD, I think there'd be plenty of early episodes in the season that would be good submissions too.
-
Varanasi represented a visit to the highly important Ganges River and a religious tradition associated with one of the oldest civilizations on the planet.
The filming, especially from the river to the shorelines were spectacular. I think one has to view the choices not from how one views what happened to favorite teams on the leg, but more independently on how the episodes represented the best of the seasons(s), especially with the upgrade to high definition.
At least one of the trade news sites thinks that TAR has a really good shot of recapturing the reality competition Emmy, and I do think some of the technical awards are in play. Whether TAR can win one for Bert as director or Phil as host is harder to read. But I have hope we won't be seeing TAR going home empty handed as happened last year.

The Amazing Race Goes Home Empty Handed at Creative Arts Emmys
(http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i175/xangatheamazingrace/philemmys.jpg)
Phil attends tonight's Creative Arts Emmys
The Amazing Race goes home 0-6 at tonight's Creative Arts Emmys. Survivor's Jeff Probst takes home the Emmy for Reality Show Host, giving Phil Keoghan his third straight loss. Probst has won every Emmy in the category since it was introduced.
TAR lost three to Deadliest Catch and one each to the HBO documentary Gasland and History's Gettysburg.
TAR has not won any Creative Arts Emmys since 2007, while they remain winless in the Directing, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing categories.
Here are the winners from tonight's ceremony in the categories TAR was nominated in:
Outstanding Reality Show Host - WINNER: Jeff Probst, Survivor (CBS)
Outstanding Cinematography for Reality Programming - WINNER: Deadliest Catch (Discovery Channel)
Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming - WINNER: Gasland (HBO)
Outstanding Picture Editing for Reality Programming - WINNER: Deadliest Catch (Discovery Channel)
Outstanding Sound Editing for Nonfiction Programming (Single or Multi-Camera) - WINNER: Gettysburg (HISTORY)
Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming - WINNER: Deadliest Catch (Discovery Channel)
The big Emmy for Reality-Competition Program will be awarded during the main ceremony on Sunday, September 18th on Fox.

Poor TAR.. I hope TAR need work hard as well.
-
TAR really and honestly DESERVES to win....i mean, last year's winner was such a ROBE, i was like, r u kidding me?? Maybe Survivor or The Apprentice would've been more deserving choices, but Top Chef? C'mon.....The episode in Varanasi has STUNNING and PRICELESS portions of video, which (i hope) will help a lot to give the award to The Amazing Race..!
BY THE WAY, can anyone recap the awards here? Specially when the present "the most-outstanding reality competition award" i cannot watch it online, so it'd be great if someone can do that 4 me...thxx a lot!
-
It's being updated over here: http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,25582.msg665372/topicseen.html#msg665372

-
:hearts: TAR is the best!! I love how they recognize how it is better than other competitive reality shows that may be more popular in ratings! :wohoo:
-
I think it is interesting to take a look at recent ratings for reality show, which I have culled from a wide variety of sources and not just one internally consistent place (because I cannot find such a place):
U.S. Viewers (in millions)
American Idol 16
Dancing with the Stars 14.5
America's Got Talent 14
Survivor 11
Amazing Race 10
Jersey Shore 9 (can you believe this?)
Big Brother 8
last night's X-Factor 8 (which I predict will go down because it just isn't a very good show)
Biggest Loser 6
Hell's Kitchen 6
I personally watch what a very select group of the above (AGT, Amazing Race, Hell's Kitchen) plus several other chef competition shows (Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, Top Chef-Just Desserts, Master Chef). I can attest to the superiority of AR17 and AR18 over all these shows.
I know the other shows above by reputation and it would be laughable for any of them to consider themselves competitive with the Amazing Race.
So, I agree with you, Prophet. There are 4 higher rated show than the Amazing Race, but none of them has sufficient quality to compete.
-
Now I'm complaining more about Phil not winning best host! His job is as taxing and hard as Jeff! :meow:
-
Phil may not have won Best Host yet, but at least he has his share of Emmys. He also gets a statue as an official member of production I believe?
-
You can get ratings info from thefutoncritic (http://thefutoncritic.com/) or tvbythenumbers (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/), apskip.
In terms of total viewers, American Idol performance shows and Dancing with the Stars performance shows usually get ~20 million.
America's Got Talent is between 12-13.
The X Factor had ~12 million for its debut.
-
slayton,
I did not use your source, but I stand behind each and every number in my above post. Of course with ratings there are different time periods so you can get different results and interpretations. I used what I feel to be reasonable assessments of those different results and interpretations. If you have better numbers in total (not just for 30% of the ones I listed), go right ahead and show us.
-
When I bring up ratings for a show, I'm referring to the average for the entire show, and not each half hour/quarter hour.
I only brought up those four shows because the viewership totals that you gave for three of them were too low, apskip. The numbers for the other shows on your list looked about right.
I don't claim to be a ratings expert. I do follow the ratings for certain shows, and if someone were to claim to the ratings experts that American Idol averaged 16 million viewers and Dancing with the Stars averaged 14.5 million viewers, the experts would correct that person immediately.
I don't know where you get your numbers from, apskip. I reference sites like thefutoncritic and tvbythenumbers because they are in the business of reporting ratings.
-
As I'm sure mswood would agree with me on this -- you have to be very careful in looking at season average ratings numbers for any show. Nielsen has some surprising quirks in their calculations, such as annual changes in the number of viewers represented by a ratings point, and the fact that an episode of a show designated as a "special" is not included in season averages, even if it airs at the normal time.
So one needs to make sure you are comparing apples and apples and not aplles and oranges.

Taking the two seasons of TAR together, those numbers would average just over 11 million. But as I noted before, season averages used in the entertainment industry media do not include episodes denominated as "special." It's a crazy system, but that is how they work.
