Mallory is wearing a toque or hat and is doing the roadblock gnome. She is at the 12 second mark in the video.
So all 4 teams seem to be on even ground at that spot.
I thought F/T was telling B/E to 'calm down sister' but I think he is actually directing that to Vyxsin who is working in front of him.
Judging by the Globes tension, they must be behind at the task or are feeling somehow 'cheated' (dare I use that term after this past episode).
couple things.
1. we can be sure that flight time, mallory, vyxsin, zev, and jen are doing the road block.
2. when ft was saying "calm down sister", i think he was actually talking to KENT! lol

From the vid, it sounds like Zev and Justin search and we see K/v do the rescue.
Could the drama be over a stolen cab. That tends to lead to blame and tension.
Yeah I can't quite hear the drama.
Also, am I the only one that can't see Gary/Mallory at the roadblock? I can see everyone else though.

Honestly, I think everyone is making mountains out of molehills here and trying to find underlying meanings that are most likely innocent and not the true intentions of the poster. Lets not use up anymore more time and space picking apart someones final 3 speculation, We have more important things to pick apart, like previews, promo's, screencaps!

They are making a chocolate MOLD. They use the ice mold of the gnome to paint on the different colors of warmed chocolate, which hardens and makes a shell. When finished, the ice part will melt out from inside and leave a hollow chocolate mold of the Travelocity gnome. The ice mold was made in a plastic mold which is lying on the table behind Zev I think.

It all depends whether the racers are allowed to do 6 or 7 RB. If its 7 then with Zev doing the cooking RB, Justin can do the last 2.
Another team with possible RB issues are the Trotters. The cooking RB will be the fifth for FT, so BE might have to do one and we all remember what happened last time at F4.

Mammut has extensive products and services, more than just those. They have 5 different types of Alpine schools. In addition to alpine clothes and rescue gear, they make and sell: Footwear Ropes Climbing Gear Backpacks Sleeping Sytems Headlamps
Beyond that, they provide avalanche rescue services.
I cannot figure out which of the above were used in the just-telecast episode, although I can imagine how several of them might be involved in the next episode telecast.

Thanks for the episode descriptions Prophet. I can't really find out anything from what we saw on the preview except useless things like the company that makes the industrial chocolate warmer. The footage seems to have been edited in a few spots? Vyxsin looks like she had done a lot at one point and at another point it looks like she has just started?

There are two race teams in the third photo, maybe even 3.....I would suspect they are Kisha/Jen in foreground and Flight Time/Big easy in the middle. They both seems to be taller than the cameraman/soundman. Cant tell in the far background. Kent and Vyxsin do the crevasse. It is a strength task. Gary could probably haul up Mallory easier then them hiking up the snowfield........
Seems to be pretty early in the morning and the light is very flat.

Well if the Matterhorn is the location of the detour options (or at least one of them), then the detour comes first. The promo says something along the lines of things heat up after descending on the mountains.

The clock behind BE looks to me as if it is around 2p.m. Can anybody see it better? In one of the first caps we see the sun a little above the mountain tops, so based on this two pictures I would say they go early in the morning on the mountain for the detour and then later in the day back in town for the RB.

I suspect that they may have left the Zermatt area in order to get to the chocolate-block location. They are all bunched together in the kitchen at one time, probably due to either hours of operation for the kitchen, or transportation issues getting there.

It would be odd to see a second roadblock as the secondary task after they refused to do that for the W-Turn. It would also be odd if all teams were bunched after doing the Detour, making the elimination rely mostly on roadblock performance. However if they must take the chocolate gnome to the Pitstop then it would probably have to be last.

The pitstop does not have to be anywhere in the Zermatt area. It could be anywhere along the route to the Zurich airport.

I have researched the location of the 35 largest Swiss chocolate manufacturers in Switzerland (there was a French company that snuck into the list I was working from, but that is not within my rules). What I found was that boston_jen may well be correct about where the chocolate task is located. Here is what I found:
the largest number (4) is in Basel there are a few in Geneva (3) there are many scattered all around Switzerland there are none near Zermatt (the closest appears to be Nestle several hours away by train or car in Vevey) there are 3 in Zurich and 3 in its suburbs, making it the highest concentration
I believe that based on this information, the pit stop for episode 10 is likely to be in the Zurich area or maybe the Geneva area. Basel is out due to the extra time to reach there and the plane schedules being inferior to Zurich.

Another good point: Zurich is a very good international aiport, and because they are flying all the way to Rio de Janeiro, that would be a playing factor.

The clock behind BE looks to me as if it is around 2p.m. Can anybody see it better? In one of the first caps we see the sun a little above the mountain tops, so based on this two pictures I would say they go early in the morning on the mountain for the detour and then later in the day back in town for the RB.
Or maybe 10 after 11? ( just appears one hand is longer...maybe?)

When I heard Mallory call dad, it was when screencap 7 was showing?
There is a lot of wind blowing on that glacier........you would certainly hear it in a recording. Mallory sounded to me like she was down in a well......ie the crevasse.......The recording was very clear and wind free. That is just my spec.......take it or leave it.

I looked at Felchin earlier this week after raina's post about the warmer, but the clothing from their promotional materials didn't necessarily click with what the staff in the promo is wearing (small green emblem on one jacket), and Felchin appeared to also be an ingredient supplier for others who make chocolate as well, so their name on the machine wasn't entirely conclusive to me, so I continued looking at cooking schools and chocolate manufacturers. So, not ignoring, just still looking around at yummy chocolate sites.... :food:
I was leaning back to thinking it's a restaurant, given the presence of champagne buckets, coffee cups in the dishwashing racks, and the various serving pieces around the kitchen, but they seem more geared toward dessert service only, rather than full service restaurant kitchen. :duno:

I have researched the location of the 35 largest Swiss chocolate manufacturers in Switzerland (there was a French company that snuck into the list I was working from, but that is not within my rules). Felchlin has a school/location set up to give instructions to chefs from all over the world on pastries and deserts. This is set up for groups of up to 20 people. They also do a lot of work with moulds/molds.
According to SBB, it is approximately 1:15 to 1:30 hour/minutes from Schwyz to Zurich Airport, if they choose to have the Pit Stop in Schwyz. They could also have the pit stop in Zurich somewhere around some of the same architecture as in Vienna for the HD cameras.

I saw the Felchlin thing when I mentioned the chocolate warmer, but their facility didn't look anything like the photos we had. Teuscher's claim is not supported by real facts, although it does claim to have invented the "champagne truffle" (and may have done so (I don't know). The wife of the founder of Teuscher is currently alive at 92 years old, so it is highly unlikely that her husband the now-deceased Dolf Teuscher was old enough to invent chocolate truffles before 1895. Here is some information on chocolate truffles, particularly the Swiss kind:
The chocolate truffle was first created by M. Dufour in Chambéry, France in December 1895. They reached a wider public with the establishment of the Prestat chocolate shop in London by Antoine Dufour in 1902, which still sells 'Napoleon III' truffles to the original recipe. There are now three main types of chocolate truffles: American, European, and Russia:
The "American truffle" is a half-egg shaped chocolate-coated truffle, a mixture of dark or milk chocolates with butterfat A Canadian variation of the American truffle, known as the Harvey truffle, includes the addition of graham cracker crumbs and peanut butter. It doesn't really look like any team but it has to be Zev and Justin. I think the teams that do the searching for the beacon wear the red windbreakers. It is not the globetrotters and every other team has been seen in the Dayglo yellow.

I don't know how fair it is to be calling the trotters cowards here- They could have quite easily been ruled out of going down the crevasse because they were simply too big. (Big Easy, at least. The man is huge!)

There is still a RB to go and somehow I don't think they put the safety gear back on after that.
WE KNOW they are flown by helicopter up onto the glaciers. We even know the company that does it.

Hold on, so you are confirming that the roadblock follows the detour?? I find it unusual that they would do that again after not doing it on the Wturn leg. Also we know that all teams seem to be at about the same position at the roadblock meaning that they may be extremely close at checkins and rendering the Detour somewhat useless. Although it would be nice to see an actual sprint for the mat to stay in the game. It seems like all the eliminations this year have been of some team that was hopelessly behind.
And if that is G/M in cap 13 do they switch detours?

I have been doing these caps all year. I don't remember seeing a PITSTOP cap in a promo yet.
Why would cap 13 mean they switch detours?
Yes that looks like G/M in that pic.
Look at caper's pic above^^ , see Mallory's red jacket?
And MY GUESS is they are ALL given red winter gear.
Those doing the crevasse are then outfitted in addition with a yellow/green shell.

Where, in fact, it's people running to/from the detour options.
You can also see that there is a difference in lighting: one in light, and the other in relative darkness

Wow...I guess I need to be literal when I post here. I should have said, "speculate". I assumed it was Zev/Justin digging deep in the snow because it looked like 2 guys to me. So, to calm down the posters, I "speculate". Haha I also "speculated" that it was a pit stop. From those happy faces on the Globetrotters, I "speculated" they were running to a pit stop. So now...notice my posts in the single digits. Cut me some slack! :)

I am not sure what Gary and Mallory did for sure... They were seen in both Red and Green Jackets. It could be that they all started with Red and then got green if they are doing the crevasse. There is always the possiblility they switched detours too...

I know we had the rescue thing in spoilers somewhere. :lol:
Both sides of the detour appear to me to be pretty common alpine search and rescue techniques. Search in a crevasse for a dummy and rescue it. Or search in simulated avalanche field for a dummy and rescue it. Hard to tell where any team is going just from the walking part. Appears the helicopters take them all to the same approximate place on the glacier and then they can decide at the last moment or at least they can decide while still in the air.
The avalanche field seach/rescue, reminds me of TAR11 in Argentina. Just after Rob/Amber were eliminated, teams had to go up a ski lift and search a glacier/snowfield for a buried clue, using the same technique they are using in this episode. I think in TAR11, it was just the route marker to fly to Africa though becuase all teams had to do the same thing and both teammates did it together.
Looks to me that Gary has the yellow/lime green windbreaker over a navy blue coat and Mallory has the windbreaker over a red coat. I dont know how much the color scheme has to do with a particular task. All teams appear to me to be wearing a yellow harness and safety pack on their backs though.
We see Gary at a scene saying " I think he is going to make it", laughing as he is saying it. He is obviously referring to the dummy they have to find underneath the snow.
It looks like they are rescuing a dummy from the crevasse.
I have looked for a screencap of this little scene. I guess no one has captured it. It is hard to tell if the dummy was coming out of the snow or out of the crevasse, to me.

Dr. Rox, Your memory is good. At the beginning of AR11, episode 5 the remaining 7 teams took a bag of tools including an avalanche beacon detector and pickax up the Martial Glacier lift to a point from which they were to find the clues buried under the ice with a beacon set to the same unique frequency.

Based on the new screencaps, I think Gary and Mallory did the search, like Zev and Justin did. Gary was holding a tool that was exactly like the one that Zev and Justin had. Gary went in the hole they dug and pulled out the dummy! That was Kent and Jen in the crevasse.
Caps 14, 15 & 16 are Gary & Mallory digging. Cap 28, Gary in the hole, pulling up the dummy.

That's what I thought too! I thought, if they are still racing the leg, why would they take time out do a PI and be so casual & relaxed about it? I suppose they could have done the roadblock and then raced back to the helipad for the PS?
Also, if they are suppose to bring their gnomes to the PS, wouldn't they be a gooey mess? Does chocolate dry/freeze that fast?

In cap 4, I think, it's the moment when Mallory says "We sure have a lot of safety gear on". To me that sounds like they haven't been to the detour yet and they don't know what to expect exactly. Also have we thought the possibility that they are not enough helicopters for all the teams? So the first 2 teams would go at the site and the next would have to wait for the helicopters to return. I don't know what it would be more financial wise for the production, to hire 5 helicopters or just 2-3 to go back and forth.

The Roadblock in Zermatt is the last task before having to find the Pitstop.

There are a few pieces of knowledge about molding and setting chocolate in the molds that deserve attention. I have searched for answers and found some at http://www.candylandcrafts.com/chocolatecandymolding.htm My basic interpretation of them are:
1. Chocolate needs to be heated to between 98 degrees F and 100 degrees. 2. For larger molds, the best results for setting the chocolate are about 10 minutes in a freezer.
Peach has indicated that the demolding step is accomplished by allowing ice in the middle to melt, so this implies time for super-cooled water to freeze, which may not happen in that 10 minutes.
I don't have a good idea on how long it will take for that ice to melt.

I think(?) since all teams were bunched at the RB, i could get some clues from how far the racers are into the RB and i'm very sure Mallory's a LITTLE way ahead of Vyxsin, with some parts of the chocolate gnome completed.

I think they have to make a FULL Gnome. Those moulds left on the table seen in the picture above may be the other second part of the Gnome. As you can see from previous pictures Mallory and Vyxsin seemed to only be completing 1/2 of the Gnome at a time.

With the "IT IS A RACE TO THE FINISH" comment and especially the “The pictures tell the story” comment combined with the 2A promo caps, I’m afraid I figured out who the eliminated team is. I hope I’m wrong and this is all speculation, but if I’m right, I hope they are not eliminated because they forgot their gnome because that would be terrible and sad considering their previous experience on the race... :(

It's the same process. Mallory's "colouring" it from bottom up... it's just lacking the red part. :)

The two mold halves sitting on the table is what they started with. It had been filled with water before hand and then placed in a freezer. The teams received that when they arrived. FT is holding one, in one of the screencaps. After they remove that plastic mold from the ice gnome, they "paint" the ice gnome with the different colors of chocolate. Then they would put in a freezer to set the chocolate. How long they have to wait then........I haven't a clue.

I do believe all they have to do is to colour the gnome up then pour in the chocolate, wait for it to cool, remove the mould.. then complete RB.. and bring it to the pitstop.
After 2 foodie Detour, i refuse to believe that teams have to eat the entire gnome at the pitstop before they could check-in. :lol3:

Long time lurker, first post here. Peach clues are making me really worried for my favorite team. With the "IT IS A RACE TO THE FINISH" comment and especially the “The pictures tell the story” comment combined with the 2A promo caps, I’m afraid I figured out who the eliminated team is. I hope I’m wrong and this is all speculation, but if I’m right, I hope they are not eliminated because they forgot their gnome because that would be terrible and sad considering their previous experience on the race... :(

Peach, do you allow me to explain my reasoning and tell who my speculated eliminated team is ? I have no insider info, so all I did was to put the pieces together with your clues. It was fun every week until I figured out this week that the probable eliminated team was also my favorite one! :lol:

Improper freezing of the gnome! Hmmmm? Maybe someone leaves the freezer door open too long and another team's gnome does not freeze properly? Maybe someone takes the wrong gnome out of the freezer? Maybe someone's gnome is left in the freezer too long and that causes problems.
Not long until we find out.

Well, since it’s all speculation, I guess that it would do no harm to tell what I meant by that. Look at the pictures posted by Peach for the 2A promo. At first I thought it would come down to a race between FT/BE and K/J because of the "IT IS A RACE TO THE FINISH" clue. There is a “RACE” caption when those two teams are on-screen. Later Peach added “The pictures tell the story”. If the pictures tell the story, there is another team in the last cap after the “RACE” captions. It’s strange because Peach wrote that those caps were “new stuff”, but in fact that was already posted before (capture #14, reply #105). I thought that maybe Peach put that pic there for a reason : to tell the story. There will be a race to the finish line and the last team will be the team on the last picture, Z/J. REALLY hope I’m wrong though.

In my opinion, they didn't feature the riff between Big Easy and Kent for nothing. Even the episode blurb mentions it. Combine it with the hint that someone messes up, Flight Time probably makes a mistake that, for reasons yet to be revealed, Big Easy asserts the goths had something to do with it. hence the "I'm not placing blame, I'm telling the truth" comment.

I figured the roadblock location cannot be far from the pitstop since they have to carry the chocolate gnome there. Apparently it will literally be a footrace to stay in the race? Doesn't bode well for non-athletic teams...

So when was the last time someone was eliminated after one of those little thirty minute penalties?
I loved the close finish and the tasks this time. The detour choice was really important, I think Gary and Mallory would have done a lot better if they had chosen the other one. They had to be worn out from all the digging and the running to the pitstop.

They got an hour penalty as far as I remember. Usually with the thirty minutes they just lose a spot. The problem was everyone was so close. It was fun to watch though.

I believe that the ROADBLOCK location was the Le Capri hotel restaurant (only one in Le Petit Cervin) kitchen on the 4th floor. Le Petit Cervin is located on Bahnhofstrasse and is one of 4 buildings making up the 5-star Mont Cervin (Matterhorn in French) Palace Hotel.
The usual diners for LeCapri would have easily been handled for lunch on December 8/9/1010 (I'm not sure which but that is irrelevant), 2010 by the other restaurants in the Mont Cervin buildings: two different rooms where a sumptuous breakfast buffet and, in the evening, an exquisite dinner, à la carte dishes and weekly themed buffets are served the Grill Le Cervin - meat and fish tastefully prepared on the charcoal grill and market-fresh products from the French kitchen

Yeah, they got a 30 minute penalty for paying a taxi to lead them, and 30 minutes for taking a taxi to the Church of the Savior on Blood when they were meant to travel on foot.
And I agree with the Prophet, it was a very quick leg especially with the bunching point at the train station. And it made for an exciting finish.

Haha, I have a feeling this Pit Stop location was cooked up on the spot!
So while hunting around Zermatt, I found the location of the tour operator that managed the avalanche/crevice rescue tasks this leg. And their office (if you'd call it one) is located up in the northeastern corner of town, at the side of a steep slope. I got slightly confused following the street signs after those killer stairs, decided to take a straight path instead to the office, and... ended up shin-deep in the snow field that served as the Pit Stop...
And all this time I had no idea it would be the Pit Stop! (I swear I saw paw prints in the snow too! :lol:) Now I wonder if a PA took the same wrong turn while scouting for locations...
(Disclaimer to protect the behinds of the tour operator: no they were very tight-lipped, that's not where I got the information for both sides of the Detour!)

Did somebody earlier wonder what it said at the bottom half of the roadblock clue? Because I figured it out and it has some interesting implications.

The first thing we can infer from this is that the roadblock rules are more complicated than we think. Apparently it is not acceptable to have a distribution of 3-6 when going into the two final legs. Even though that would permit the team to get to 5-6 assuming there are two roadblocks and one team member performs both. I wonder if the rule is that the difference in performed road blocks may never be greater than 2?
The second thing we can infer form this is that production does not count the dinosaur building road block as performed by Gary. This is the road block they skipped with the express pass. That is because if we count that one as performed by Gary (he did say he was going to do it) then Gary & Mallory would also be at 5-3 at this stage in the race. That is the same as Zev & Justin and if so they should also have been listed on the clue.
