it seems Luke was the last one at the roadblock :duno: unless the detour come after. or teams gets lost (i really doubt it,since Kolkatta is so narrow and teams are packed together)

I would definitely not count out Margie and Luke as being able to come last, because the previews have been right, just not all of the time.

I think Luke would probably have done well with the dinosaur puzzle......since he is so visual. He could have done like Jet and gone over and looked at the picture. The RB in Kolkata sort of reminds me of the food challenge in Hong Kong last race.

It reminds more of the speedbump that the cowboys had to do in Malaysia, where they had to find the correct taste of the tea, only this is more extended.

I suspect that with all the teams being at the apparent roadblock task, that it came soonest after teams arrived in Kolkuta. I suspect the detour comes after, and that, unless I'm missing something, it is impossible to guess which team reaches the pit stop just from that.

Since you guys were discussing teams who were eliminated after being shown in the preview, I've got a short list here:
Shana & Jennifer (almost hit by a bus in TAR12) Azaria & Hendekea (shown to be panicking through the Vilnius airport in TAR12) Mika & Canaan (waterslide trouble in TAR15) Zev & Justin (losing passports in TAR15) (not 100% sure about this one) Steve & Linda (getting lost in TAR14) (once again, I'm not 100% sure about this)
Thinking even further back, I think Alison & Donny and Jim & Marsha got shown in previews before their respective eliminations. I also think Fran & Barry in TAR9 were shown.
There are obviously a lot more examples, but I just wrote down those that came to mind first.

I think we need another promo or two to decide what story CBS is trying to tell us this week.
I was shocked that the Redheads were able to U-Turn another team without completing the entire Detour.

Based on caps 11-12, the Roadblock is being performed by Zev, Ron, Flight Time, Kisha, Kent, Mallory, and Jet. And of course, we know Luke is doing it. They spoiled the entire Roadblock in this promo!
I wonder why Kisha, Mallory, Jet, and Kent are all doing it out of turn. (double roadblock?)

I think those racers you have in question are not doing out of turn..based on Wiki, their team's roadblock count is already balanced..I can't believe if I were in a race and have to face this roadblock...I have allergy for tea... :helpme

An interesting observation, WP! There are several tables of fruit there. But I have to wonder why Mallory is the only Racer carrying fruit. Why are the others just standing around?

Maybe they have to find a fruit-flavored tea, then find the corresponding piece of fruit. Most of the cups probably say "Sorry, Try Again" on the bottom.
PS: we do see Luke there with the other racers and full tables of tea. It must have been very frustrating for him.

This task may be similar to the Chinese food task of last season...you have to drink whatever you touch whether or not it's correct. I agree with Chill; there may be many different flavors of tea on that table they have to search through to find their designated flavors, including plain.

Just an idea: Could they have been told to find a tea with the flavour of a specific fruit and at the bottom of the cup is the name of the fruit written so that the judge will recognise it? Maybe it's not even written in English but in Hindu, to make it harder for the racers to remember what they have already tasted. As for the tea having different flavours that's obvious of its colour. In many fotographs we see at least three different shades ( dark tea, yellow and orange coloured tea).

I think the yellow cage things are some kind of rickshaw schoolbus. Here's a picture taken of one in New Delhi. This looks like a route info to ride to the school in one. Jet and Cord can be seen at the school with a bunch of kids at one point.
Also the statue they are painting looks like a replica of the Hindu god Ganesha who is cleverly enough considered the remover of obstacles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganesha#Obstacles) (roadblock).

If someone can find the order of the Roadblocks/Detours/Route Info and the apparent equalizer, we would be able to tell a lot more from the night/day shots.
And again, may be kind of useless, but it definitely looks like Lukes hair gel when he is at the tea roadblock is a lot more worn out than what it looks like when all the teams are running through the gate (which usually would mean that the gate comes before the roadblock, by quite a lot of time).

Yes and apparently you could incorrectly complete the Detour you chose and still legitimately u-turn a team even if it's an advantage for doing it incorrectly. I've asked Mark & Bill during one of the RFF interviews a few years back and they said that they wouldn't have gotten a bigger penalty if they used the U-turn instead (they did consider doing the U-turn on Marisa & Brooke...), as long as you get to know where the U-turn sign is and you get there ahead of the team you wish to do the U-turn on.

A team would be penalized for not getting the clue sending them to the U-Turn location, or by following another team without finishing the task first. Depending on the circumstances, they might receive the penalty for not completing the Detour, and for not having the clue if they get to the pit stop without all the clues in hand to check in. In the past, Phil has sent teams back to get the missing clue. So I'm not sure exactly what would be done in an instance with two significant rule violations, but 4 hours for the one, and probably at least another half hour plus time saved or whatever it would be to neutralize the impact on the U-Turned team would be a good guess, I would think. The closest I can think of what the Momily penalty in the first Thailand leg of TAR Classic, where they quit the detour, did not have the clue to the next location, and arrived at the pit stop having not gotten all the clues. All we heard was a 24 hour penalty. I'm starting to wonder if the 24 hour penalty then was for multiple violations and not just quitting the detour; since we never saw a quit the detour violation again until very recently, and we were all surprised it was only 4 hours.

Since caps 46-48 are at night, one can safely assume that caps 10-12 and 41-45 follow an hours of operation. Could they be running into the building that houses the Roadblock or is it something else?

The source that saw Jet/Cord through security at CCU while Lakisha/Jen were still buying tickets also said "one more hippy looking team had already cleared security". The only team that looks anything like hippies to me are the Goths, so I'm speculating that Kent and Vyxsin make it through the next leg in Kolkata as well.
Update:
Reading further down the page in the sightings thread, the person who spotted the teams at CCU apparently saw Kent and Vyxsin but didn't think they were with the race. They also thought they saw Mike and Mel. I see now why the hippy looking team sighting wasn't including in the Timeline. The whole sighting is a bit suspect.

Exactly what I was thinking Plaidmoon. Based on these facts and theschnauzers insight about trends it looks like Ron and Christina Zev and Justin and Margie and Luke will not be with us for long. Perhaps the promos are being straight and Margie and Luke are gone this time.

If someone can find the order of the Roadblocks/Detours/Route Info and the apparent equalizer, we would be able to tell a lot more from the night/day shots.
And again, may be kind of useless, but it definitely looks like Lukes hair gel when he is at the tea roadblock is a lot more worn out than what it looks like when all the teams are running through the gate (which usually would mean that the gate comes before the roadblock, by quite a lot of time).
Roadblock precedes the Detour. Don't know about HOO's, RI, etc...yet. :lol:

Because it's been referenced in this thread, I'm bringing over part of the post in the "live feed" thread for episode five dealing with the teams' average placements:
It's for gaps in filming spoilers like we're facing until the next to last leg that a look at teams' overall performance may offer some indication of what may happen.
When I computed and ordered the placement average rankings for this week, Kent and Vxysen are having a terrible season, with an average placement over the first 5 legs of 7.6000, and Ron and Christina aren't doing much better, averaging 6.4000. Except for Gary and Mallory, who are averaging 3.4000 so far, the other teams are clustered between 4.0000 and 4.8000. There's some movement going on both ways among those top 6 teams, but this is just a snapshot. Based on what's happened in the past, Kent and Vxysen and Ron and Christina are most likely to be among the next two eliminations, but Zev and Justin, with two consecutive 8th place finishes, could also be among the high-danger group.

Just looking at that map and google earth I see a couple of girls schools within walking distance of Girish Park. One is Piyari Charan Girls School and the other was Central Calcutta Girls Academy. Both are apparently high schools. For what it's worth, I found references to a hostel at the first one. The schools would probably match up with the rickshaw carts. I also see a site mentioned as Ganesh Talkies, probably a movie theater. That could be a site for painting Ganesha statutes, but I think it would be more likely elsewhere. You could probably do that anywhere with some open space where you could set up statutes for a day or so.
Looking for pictures of Girish Park, I didn't find much. There was one photo labelled as Calcutta Rescue No. 10 School with small children in a classroom. It also provided a link for http://www.calcuttarescue.org. That website calls the school the "number one school" and says it is located "in the heart of the red light district in Nimtala, near Girish Park". That group says it provides medical help and education for the poorest and most disadvantaged people in Kolkata and has won awards. If TAR is going to do another day of helping the people of a location they visit like they did in Africa last season, this is the sort of group they might contact. There are probably dozens of similar agencies, so it's unlikely that I've stumbled on the right one. Also, now that I look at the timeline, there doesn't appear to be an extra day unaccounted for in Kolkata. There is an extra day in Varanasi though, so we might want to keep that in the back of minds when promos come out for the Varnasi leg.
Other tidbits culled from Girish Park: The Girish Park Metro Station (if they take the train) is about 11 km from the airport. It has some beautiful looking murals that we might see quickly as teams run from the station. The Latoo Chhatu Babu Bazar near Girish Park has a Bengali New Year Festival in April that has some interesting aerial acrobat activity. A tall pole is set up and the acrobats are suspended from ropes from the top of the pole. The pole is then spun rapidly and the acrobats fly out and throw goodies from bags to the crowd below. That would be interesting as a roadblock/detour but since we've seen no sign of it in the preview, I doubt it will be part of the upcoming episode.

Last team to check in in Kunming was approx @ 1416, Nov 29th. A standard Pit Stop after the KRLs would release teams at 0216 on Nov 30. There is a nightly direct flight from Kunming to Kolkatta, departing @ 2355 and arriving in Kolkata @ 2350. There are many other connections available through HongKong and Bangkok. If teams did fly the direct flight, it was mean about a 24+ pit stop.
Since teams appear to arrive at night time and do the RB during the night. I spec it is pretty good bet that they flew on this particular flight.
When I did a GE search for Girish Park, I actually got a park. Seems like a good place for the Detour Clue box.

I spent some time this morning looking at hundreds of pictures of school children taken in Kolkata and I'm almost positive that the school children in the preview are not from the Rescue Mission school. Among the pictures were a couple dozen taken at the Rescue Mission school and they were not wearing school uniforms. They were wearing a random assortment of regular clothing. I doubt that poor families could afford special school uniforms and I doubt that the rescue mission would go to the expense of providing the uniforms when they could be using that money for medical supplies, food or school equipment. So, I don't think they were at the Rescue Mission school. That points me back towards the other schools I found in the area - the Piyari Charan Girls School or the Calcutta Girls Academy (may not be exactly the right name without looking it up again). I would remove the mention of the Rescue Mission school from this proposed timeline as I don't think it's very likely to be correct.
I did find one picture of young girls in a green school uniform but it was taken across town at the Nicco Park Water Slide/Amusement Park complex so it doesn't help us pin down the school involved.

It kind of does, in a way, pertain to this leg because Prophets 'Possibly Eliminated' has three teams listed which prompted the 'Don't count tour chickens' reply. Then the tidbit about the winners. This would indicate that one of these teams listed in the 'Possibly Eliminated' may be either the winners or in at least the finals so they will not be eliminated this leg... It would help to narrow down who gets eliminated this week. Does that make sense? LOL ???

I know you did a great job with the info you have! Thanks Prophet! I was just trying to find a way to widdle the 'possibly eliminated' list down and thought the tidbit about winners would help us do that. The 'don't count your chickens' comment lead me to believe that one of the teams can be excluded from the list and therefore narrow down the possibilities... That's all I was trying to point out. :angel:

If you look carefully at the same windows when all the racers are together you will see that is dark outside. We can see the sunlight at the same windows only in the scenes with Luke who we suppose he is last at that point.

Be careful to not confuse windows with doors...it may be that each side of the hall is different, one windows, one doors. Lack of light on one side may not be conclusive... depends on the angle of the shot.

Just a guess...they're going here (wherever that gate is) for a route info stop, get hit with hoo, and have to come back the next morning.

But I am going to stay with the obvious and think that this could still be the Town Hall. Although I have looked for hours and can't find a exact photo of this...I did find this other shot of a different side. I think perhaps this could be a side entrance... the fences look similar.
There are two long sides to the room that the Road Block is in and they are importantly different. One side has closed solid doors while the other has some glass windows or doors. Compare to the snippet below that I took from the Town Hall link.
The shot with sad Luke has glass doors or windows that let the daylight come through. The shot with lots of racers and lots of tea cups is taken against the side with solid doors.
Odd, this one is very similar to the one that went up last night, and it has no sound???????
It has sound, it is 1AM and they were on a 12MN fkight...and are looking for Town Hall!!

The RB is first. The painting is one side of the detour, I don't think that the school bus is one side because we see seven teams doing the painting. Jet and Cord and Gary and Mallory are both seen doing the school bus. It looks like only one team does the alternate detour.

I used a currency converter and got 1,000,000 rupees = 22,373.87 US Dollars. That might be the largest prize given out on a non-final leg. I can't recall any that were worth more. If you're going to win a prize, cash is a nice one. :tup:

I get an exchange rate of 45 rupees/$ for Dec. 1. That means 1,000,000 rupees = $22,222.22, which Plaidmoon2 got extremely close.

One has to wonder if they will actually be paid in rupees. If so then the correct exchange rate to use would be the one on the day that they convert it. Even if they are paid in American dollars they may not be awarded the money until after the season is finished airing. Isn't that the typical practice? I believe it would be quite difficult to determine the answer to these questions and ultimately come up with the actual conversion. This is why Phil said over twenty thousand instead of an exact figure.

The largest non final prize is supposed to be the Bransen's free gas for life (though of course it really isn't free gas for life), but it supposed to be a very nice prize.

Yes, TPTB gets all the visas they need, including other visas that they dont need, before the race ever starts.

I am just darn glad that i haven't have the questions up for my game yet. And seriously, i bet TAR gave away who came in first since RFF spoiled it. :lol:
On promo 3, Ganesha Detour, when Globetrotters and Flight Time and Big Easy are doing the Detour, a full shot at the Detour shows 4 completed statues already, meaning 4 teams should have been on their way to the pit-stop already.

Wherever it is there is a "familiar bottle" there, probably the Snapple bottle. Phil also says: "You may have noticed all the tea references in this leg." Another tea task? Maybe Gallory did the other detour which involved tea as well. Could just be the RB though.

It looks like the painting and the school bus are the detour option. They have to deliver books to a school in those things. The cowboys, Gallory, and Zev and Justin do the books and everyone else does the painting.

Spoiling the show is what we do.
Now, I agree that this is certainly a different scenario because there is no way CBS would want to give away who was eliminated.
But, almost the entirety of episode one was spoiled. Does the fact that it was not found on twitter change the fact that its something that we know about the episode before we should? If people don't want to end up spoiled, they should know not to wander into the spoiler section, simple.

I understand as well, Coutzy. And that episode was the result of a lot of people's hard work getting spoilers. It was info obtained fair and square.
But this is a clear mistake on CBS's part...someone screwed up. And they have already done their best to fix it by taking down the links from the CBS site.
So we are not going to profit on their mistake.
This is a judgement call. TL and I have discussed it, and I am leaving the links to the vids removed, but will leave the commentary on what was seen up.
I don't want this to turn into a big "ethics of spoilers" discussion. But I will say again that I love the show more than the spoilers, and will never do anything to deliberately hurt it. Honest spoilers excepted, of course, as those ADD to and don't detract from the show, as we all know. :tup:
But these aren't "honest", and I don't want us to participate in continuing a mistake.
It is the same reason I choose not to do boot lists, and never intentionally spoil the final 3. Some things are too much.
Sorry if you all feel differently, I understand your position as well, just hope you can appreciate mine.
I will review the games and let mswood and Joab know what questions may have an unfair advantage from those who saw the vids.

FWIW, I think you made the right call peach! This was obviously a big mistake on someone's part and it doesnt feel right to capitalize on that. Most of the fun (and satisfaction) of spoiling comes from the hard work, the searching for details, figuring things out, piecing it together. Having it all just handed to us takes away the fun.
For me, part of the fun of watching the episodes is seeing what "we" got right. I only watched the first released clip and then stopped. It felt like opening Christmas presents before Christmas morning.

I can recall a couple of instances where a leg or final result was inadvertently spoiled by CBS (TAR 10, IIRC) but I'm not aware that all the essential elements of a leg were covered by CBS provided clips in advance of an episode.
I'm wondering if someone was taking the week off (since there is no episode next week) and thought they were doing themselves a favor. It make sense that WRP provides the material to the CBS webmonkeys to post after the episode airs on the west coast on Sunday nights, but I can't think of any other explaination for this development. The only other circumstances similar to this is that there had been some seasons where the website for a new season went up too soon, and spoiled the identity of the cast and a new season's Racer applications went up a few days beforehand, but I understand how this is different.

I would think that it's the best solution as there is not enough time for people staying in Asia to change the answers as it's already midnight and most of them are already sleeping.

When the entire episodes come out like that, the whole game is ruined. Whereas when you spoil certain parts of the episode, there are still room for our imagination to guess which other possible answers it could be. Hope that answers your question. :tup:

You are right that prize payments are typically made after the race is over, so it is impossible to know right now what will happen to the rupee/$ exchange rate. however, it is currently at 44.7, which is not much different.

I think they would donate the million if they win and just be genuinely happy for the experience. The cowboys might too.
The Cowboys are young, married, working hard on their ranches and on the tour circuit. I would think the chances of them donating $$ is probably ...NIL.
Gary OTOH is a highly successful businessman with the luxury of making a charitable contribution. Kudos to him, hope there is something for India...

Well of course anyone has the right to keep the money especially if they need it. I probably would. :lol: I just like these two teams spirit because they try hard but they are not all about winning. They seem to really enjoy the places they go and the people they meet while at the same time being incredibly good at the Race and getting along with each other and other teams. I would be very disappointed if one of them did not win.

No, I mentioned that part of why I like them is because they try hard to win. I have no interest in teams who are along for the ride for however long it lasts. I don't like teams that are so obsessed with getting ahead that they are rude to each other, other teams, and locals either.
I'm glad they want to win the Race and the money but they have a good balance between that and having fun with it.

I don't know where it came from, but Peach's precious predecessor Puddin, posted the entire boot list in correct order for the All Stars Season (11) before the season began on CBS.

I think it's worthwhile to take a mathematical look at the tea tasting. Let us start with these assumptions:
1. There were 1500 cups of tea. 2. There were a very limited number of cups that matched the reference sample tasted in Kunming. 3. For every 5 cups sampled, an individual went to the tea master. 4. Some individuals used their sense of taste or smell to "beat the odds" and others did not; for the latter this became a needle-in-a-haystack task.
Let's say there were 8 matching cups among the 1500 ( I tried it with 10 and the results did not reflect the real situation well). That means the odds of an individual tasting each cup without special knowledge would be 0.5333%. If we say that it took 15 seconds to choose and sample a cup and another 15 seconds to get the result verified, then here is the way it would have gone on average assuming no smell or taste assistance:
#1 8 cups available 94 tastings to reach midpoint in average 28 minutes #2 7 cups available 107 tastings to reach midpoint in average 33 minutes #3 6 cups available 125 tastings to reach midpoint in average 38 minutes #4 5 cups available 150 tastings to reach midpoint in average 45 minutes #5 4 cups available 187.5 tastings to reach midpoint in average 56 minutes #6 3 cups available 250 tastings to reach midpoint in average 75 minutes #7 2 cups available 375 tastings to reach midpoint in average 112 minutes (a bit less than the 3+ hours it took Flight Time) #8 1 cup available 750 tastings to reach midpoint in average 225 minutes (3.75 hours, close to what it took Luke)
Teams using taste or smell to their advantage would have finished more quickly than indicated above, but the last 2 teams were in for a very difficult task.

I found a minor inconsistency in this episode. At the Road Block we get a shot of Phil holding the cap of the bottle the teams get when they find the tea: (http://i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m534/maf42/cap_phil.png?t=1301551512)
But later when Jet & Cord read their cap we get another close shot of it. But this time the text is slightly different: (http://i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m534/maf42/cap_racer.png?t=1301551510)
The difference is that Phil's cap specify they should deliver their bottle and the other cap does not mention that but says they should take a taxi.
We hear Jet & Cord read it "Got to the Jorashanko area...". So the text they are reading is from Phil's cap. And later in the episode we see teams deliver their bottles to the tea shop.
I wonder if the close up of the cap is something they did at another time and they had to create a new cap for it and got it slightly wrong.

Good eyes! :tup: With one camera per team, what the viewer sees are called "exposition hands." It's a continuity error--Jet, for example, is holding the clue with his left hand--but a very minor one. Also fwiw: depending on where the cabbie dropped them off for Thakur Bari (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorasanko_Thakur_Bari), the teams would have been a block away from the tea stall--or right next door.

That's a nice start. But just a little too simplistic for the computer age. :tup: What you have not taken into account is that the number of cups is diminishing as the tasting goes on. This has a mathematical consequence that will help to reveal the real arrangement of teacups left out for the teams.
The main parameter at play is the number of "good" cups available to pick from. It does not have to be 8 :res:
I think 30 seconds is a better estimate of the time needed to select and drink each cup. Plus there is going to be some time used to run to the far end of the Hall to show the judge. I also upped the time needed to get checked by the judge: 30 seconds because, as we saw there was a bit of a queue. That 30 seconds is for 5 tastings as you did. I found that with 10 good cups out of the 1500 the teams could be expected to complete in the following times:
1st 13 min 2nd 25 min 3rd 40 min 4th 58 min 5th 79 min 6th 106 min 7th 147 min 8th 226 min
Running the same experiment with only 8 good cups produced the following expected completion times:
1st 16 min 2nd 32 min 3rd 74 min 4th 102 min 5th 79 min 6th 142 min 7th 204 min 8th 355 min
And finally, running the same experiment with 8 good cups and your 15 second tasting and judging times gives the following expected completion times:
1st 7 min 2nd 16 min 3rd 26 min 4th 37 min 5th 51 min 6th 71 min 7th 102 min 8th 177 min
You can see that the model is linear with the duration inputs.
So after making these runs I concluded that in order to be consistent with the 3 hours and 3.75 hours for the 7th and 8th teams we needed to have the Roadblock set up with 10 good cups of tea on the tables.
To Luke's credit I suspect one or more of the three good cups he was supposed to have were inadvertently tasted but not taken for judging. (:;)

Regarding the number of cups...
If you did lack a normal life and obsessively watched every frame of the episode you would know that there were 10 good cups out of about 1000. There is a shot showing the inside of the book the judge is holding and we see that it contains a sheet with 10 numbers ranging from 90 to 954. From that I guess there were about 1000 cups.
It would probably be possible to count the cups by running one of their camera pans in slow-motion. But that is a bit too much even for me. :colors

And there is another couple of data points you need to take into consideration. The first two cups were found fairly quickly. Ron got his at 10.07 and Jet at 10.10. So they did not follow a random process.
I would guess that the first teams managed to smell their way to the right cups, but the longer teams stayed in the room the less sensitive their smell became due to sensory overload with all the teas and fruit.

This looks like a good question to ask the racers!
Lots of possibilities going on:
1) Maybe Luke complained that there were no more good teacups on the tables. In response, production may have been compelled to check the empties to be sure. Did they find one and then then have to refill it and refill some more to mask the winning cup?
2) Luke was able, in the end, to bring a tray full of teacups to sit before the judge. He drank one, tipped the cup so the judge could see the number, waited for the determination, and repeated with the next cup. This was a far more efficient routine. Why was this not done earlier?
There was a similar situation in TAR6 where Hayden and Rebecca were trying to match their keys to specific padlocks out of thousands. It was so hopeless that production, twice, narrowed the field to guide them to the correct locks (learned on an RFF podcast, thanks Rob!).

True, but another factor that must be counted when considering the two tasks is that the teams had a definite time limit in searching for the correct lock because of the gondola. When the gondola finally did leave the location, it stranded one team and forced them to quit the task. However, the hay bales task was physically strenuous. It truly is a tossup between the two. :tup:

K/J's lucky break: This puzzled me for a bit. Thakur Bari (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorasanko_Thakur_Bari) has absolutely nothing to do with tea: it's a family estate turned into a museum--inside a college campus. There was no way a helpful stranger could connect the dots and steer K/J in the right direction, so I looked around and found him in a cap with R/C when they were hiring a cab. My guess is that he's the taxi manager (or whatever title is appropriate for directing a cab rank) and he just sent them off to the same place as the others (regardless of the tea). At least, I hope that's the explanation. :(

Just a note, I bought that Papaya Mango Tea, and it was good! Very tasty. Too bad its onlt for a limited time only :'(
