Since it appears that the Racers start Episode 4 with a drive from Kurihama to Narita, here is a GE map with GE driving route. It says 2 hours and 30 minutes for the trip. I would assume that means if you are very comfortable driving on the left and can read the route signs in Japanese.

Just a reminder that March 13th is the beginning of Daylight Savings Time in the U.S. and Canada.

Folks joining in to watch from elsewhere need to adjust that time change for their location. And those of us in the U.S. and Canada need to make sure your recording device properly adjusts for the time shift in recording. :)

Or are they using Japan's map in China? *scratches head*

The scenes with Kent & Vyxsin are obviously from japan. They are driving on the right side of the road and also we know that in China they are going by train from Kunming to Lijiang and then they are going around the old town probably on foot.

As for them being safe, didn't the witnesses say that this leg is a NEL?

Yes, kikisak, spoilers indicate that Kynt and Vxysin will be NEL'ed in Lijang.
If they are driving the wrong way in Japan, then they may board a later flight to China than anyone else.

I was wondering that myself, Doc. The lack of road signs poses a problem for us, but maybe our friends in Japan can help us. :js:

Kynt and Vyxsin's car looks like car #8. There are nine teams, if they picked those up in order they were already behind. I am thinking they will be behind the whole time.

The car numbers have no significance except that they match the team's number they get at the beginning of the season.

Spruce Plateau     in Lijiang, Yunnan

In fact Spruce Meadow is a vast grassland in the virgin spruce forest. During each period between spring and summer the grassland is delightfully green and the flowers are pleasantly beautiful. From a distance, the Spruce Meadow looks like a jade green blanket in the ranges of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

According to the legend, the Spruce Meadow is the place where the first pair of lovers of Naxi nationality died of love. If you come here you can have the chance to witness the mighty thousand-year-old glacier on the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the fantasticality and quietness of virgin forest and the amazing songs and dance of Naxi nationality. You will be warmly welcomed by Naxi people.

Everyone is entitled to their own interpretation, but this seems obvious to me:
1. Kent is driving a right-side steering wheel car. That is possible only in Japan, as several before me have pointed out.
2. Although it may appear that Kent is driving in the right-hand lane and thus vulnerable to oncoming traffic on a 3 lane road, it is pretty obvious that the car ahead of him in that lane is going the same way as he is. That means it is one-direction travel on half of a 6 lane expressway.

From my research the girls in the fur hats with feathers are local Yi people. So this would not be the task that one of our spotters said involved people dressed in traditional Naxi clothing. Is that correct?

They probably get to Jade Dragon snow hill by bus from Lijiang ancient city, then take cable cars to Spruce Meadow, and change to electric vehicle to RB place...when they finish RB, electric vehicle directly sent them to bus which took them back to ancient city in Lijiang.

If those are dedicated trams (note the flag), and R/C speak Mandarin, then what's the excuse for heading the wrong way? Shouldn't the driver know what's expected of him, or failing that couldn't R/C have made sure before they got on? It reminds me of the bad boat driving in Panama.

That is an excellent point to bring up, Slowhatch. It makes one think that they either got a bad driver or their driver did not like Ron because of his hot temper.

Interesting tidbit in this week's press release:

Quote
Frustrations rise in China when one team's position in the race is jeopardized after getting lost and misplacing their passport twice, ON "THE AMAZING RACE," SUNDAY, MARCH 13

"This Is the Most Stupid Day Ever" (Lijiang, China) — After losing all sense of direction en route to the airport and their passport twice, a Racer's frustration threatens to get the best of their team, on THE AMAZING RACE, Sunday, March 13 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  Phil Keoghan is host.

Got to be the Goths. They are probably behind the whole episode.

To suggest a driver would go the wrong way because he didn't like a passenger is very naive. You are basically suggesting that he is sucking at his job on a whim. Any professional driver, hell anyone who has ever worked in a job which forces them to interact with customers on any level will tell you that is not on. To go the wrong way because Ron annoyed him would be risking his job doing so, and would be terribly unprofessional.

R/C were at Yulong plaza when they had already checked in (Mad Joe said dancing was not a task,R/C just watched local dancer performed and enjoyed it)...I guess production sent teams to Yulong plaza after teams checked in to have a rest and started their next leg there(We knew they started their next leg right now after goth checked in as NEL).

From the scale in the lower left....they are not too far apart.....less than a km, between the 3 marked places. That is just .6 mile.

Am I to understand that legs 4 and 5 in Yunnan province had no rest period between them, as was the case in Australia? Wow. That's brutal.

They flew from Narita to Kunming.....then took an overnight train to Lijiang. They did the leg in Lijiang. Then it was similiar to Broken Hill. They lounged around in the afternoon, then took another overnight train back to Kunming and ran the leg there.

The leg in Lijiang appears to be a NEL with the old "Marked for Elimination" penalty.

What I was referring to is whether that comment I quoted was correct in its implication that officially, in terms of the game aspect, that the teams were checked in and then immediately sent off with a clue for the following leg.

If they had a second moving pit stop (as was the case from Broken Hill), that would still be brutal, but not by much.

That's a good idea, but I think it would be relatively easy to spot a tablet written in English among  all those written in Chinese. It would be more difficult if the racers were given something like a picture of a tablet and have to find the same.

From what I understand, this should be a TBC/NEL version 2 just like Manly was. A "Keep on racing" leg NOT a NEL with a penalty like a speedbump or anything. (http://planetsmilies.net/angel-smiley-5097.gif)

Mad Joe said goth got 30 mins penalty at Kunming leg for not coming first...and R/C actually had a rest after checking in at Yulong plaza...so there should be two different legs.

They ARE two different legs. Just like Australia was.

There may be a "not in first place" penalty OR that may be for something else altogether, I don't know.

But this is not a speedbump leg... not an "oldtime NEL" is what I mean.

I think if they are just looking for the airport it would be pretty straightforward. Airports are marked.

So is there an in between route info stop to find?

Second, the R/C incident occurs at this turnoff which leads up the the Spruce meadow skilift; compare the rock on the left and the directional arrows on the post. R/C had been coming from the uphill road which leads to the Yak meadow lift (maybe those small trams run up to Spruce meadow, I don't know). It looks like only one team member rides the yak, and we see Ron riding, so that's probably not Christina, but I could be wrong.

It looks like only one team member rides the yak, and we see Ron riding, so that's probably not Christina, but I could be wrong.

That's why I think there will be a Double Roadblock.

The Yak task is called a Route Marker, though.  Both team members participate, but it looks like only one actually rides the yak.

I don't have access to the press photos, but the photos that have been posted do contain EXIF data.  Here's the description of Cord's photo:

Quote
"This is the Most Stupid Day Ever (Liijang, China)" -- For this Route Marker, cowboy brothers Cord (pictured) and Jet must travel to Jade Drago Mountain River where they will saddle up a yak and lead it across the river for a photo with a tourist in order to receive the next clue on THE AMAZING RACE, Sunday, March 13 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Strangely - all of the photos were taken within 5 minutes of each other... or someone is messing with the EXIF info.
And I do believe that is Christina in the photo with Cord.

It's not Christina in the photo with Cord, she's wearing dark shoes in the video, the shoes in the promo are definitely white/light in color.

The person also seems to be somewhere close to Cord in height

What about Luke?

Is this Christina, just in front of Cord?

That person has a very light jacket and the sports shoes. They seem to match Christiana in the other video where she jumps ouf of the electric tram. It would be nice to get some screen caps of Christina to match with the unknown yak rider.

I was wrong - its not Christina - its Margie.
You can see the jacket she's wearing when they arrive at the pitstop in Japan - slightly quilted with a stripe down the side.

I just wonder how many of the 10 million US Amazing Race watchers think that the show/racers are caught up in the tsunami in Japan today???

And we now prove why I'm a math major, not an artist  :snicker:

Looking at the pictures, I'm pretty sure that these (Jaime / Mallory / Zev at the base) all happened in a relatively short time frame, what with the yak-handler being present in all three and, I think, Mallory's head scarf in the final picture. This assumes that each team has a different yak handler.

Also, I thought I saw a shot of several teams sprinting up a flight of stairs to, I'm guessing, the river for the yak riding (or it could be to the Spruce Meadow for the RB). Either way, I'm thinking we might be getting a bunch point.

The privileges of being a racer: this photo (https://picasaweb.google.com/hy.in.beijing3/Our3rdWinterInBeijingBrr#5440311199766220562), and the following 4/5 photos in the album, demonstrate what it's like for a typical tourist at Snow Mountain. Buy the tickets, queue for a bus, queue for a ski-lift, and queue for a "little green frog" (cart). Added together, it took this family 5 hours to reach Spruce Meadow.
I haven't found any matching pics for the K/V cablecar. It doesn't resemble the Yak Meadow cars, and a ski-lift is used for Spruce Meadow.

Actually...no, Joab is correct.

This is the current guideline....for once the cast is revealed.

Quote
** Once the casts are revealed, nothing (no photos, no comments, no anything) should be posted from a racer's OWN Facebook without their written approval. They honor us with their trust, so we try to respect the little privacy they have. Info from their FB FAN pages or Twitter is generally acceptable.

This is intended to prevent PERSONAL info being revealed, along with PERSONAL photos.

But if a racer is discussing the legs openly, I am inclined to think that is fine to share....

Glad that it's cleared. But i still think next time we should ask the racer for permission first.

Anyway, crash course for chinese zodiac.

CHINESE ZODIAC: Rat, Ox, Rabbit, Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram (Sheep/Goat), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig

Basically, every Chinese New year for us Chinese means the passing of another "animal" year and the welcoming of another animal year. Last year was Tiger and this year, we "invited" the year of Rabbit.

It takes 12 years for one zodiac "cycle" to "finish" and then it will go back to the first animal again. For example, after the year of the pig, it will go back to the year of the rat.

We Chinese believe that the zodiac has got something to do with fengshui and greatly linked to the different things that happen in our life and whatsoever.

Okay, enough of zodiac talking. One thing for sure is, i DO believe that the task which Zev got stuck at and Vyxsin attempting (have to find wooden boards/cards or what) should be the Roadblock related to Zodiac signs. Just speculating. I can't find where as will the Zodiac be incorporated into the leg. :)

Now i hope that it has past teams writing words of wishes/curses for the teams still racing.

I was right in the end... dangit!

One of the best and most suspenseful episodes in a while! I am guessing the 30 mins penalty that was overheard is for taking another flight? Airport drama <3 TBC <3 losig passports <3 zev and Justin struggling <3 Luke and Margie first <3 SOO MANY HEARTS!!! But should have defs been 90 mins. Detour was rushed!!

Ps how is this gonna work with scheduling? No NELs??

Kept thinking can't be a TBC but timing was leading massively to it.

So you really think, that after penalizing themselves about 6 hours by getting lost driving to the airport, TPTB will penalize them another 30 minutes?

Actually if people would have researched the flight options for that day, you probably would understand why teams were forced to fly on that 9:50am flight.

This episode, for me, goes down in my Top Ten Favorite Episodes EVER.

For me, this is the best Chinese leg ever been designed.
Chinese Yaks <3
Chinese Zodiac <3
Chinese Zodiac Part II <3
Chinese Detour <3
High Elevation <3
Goth Breakdowns <3
Rontina Breakdowns <3
AND... A SURPRISE FAUX-LEG! <3333333333333333

I've never been this happy for almost 4 seasons already. If I haven't been spoiled that this is a TBC leg, I would definitely be 1000% more happy, but oh well.

I LOVE CHINA.

I believe that there may have been an unseen task here... teams had to get their flight tickets from one particular travel agent before going to the airport. Which might explain perhaps how K/V got lost.

Note we don't see teams buying tickets at the airport...they already have them?

And I will bet that K/V do get a penalty of some sort for not taking the "required" flight. Otherwise why require it??  :duno: though...

Well since they let them go, starting at 830 pm........that means about a 28 hour pit stop. There were lots of flights before the 940am flight. BUT if they took any of those.........they would get to Lijiang in the afternoon and start the leg in darkness and end in darkness.....not good for HD filming......is it? By forceing teams to take that 950 flight........they insured that no teams could get to Lijiang before the next morning, so they could film in daylight. Also...they didnt have to pay the local crew to be a the tasks all night long waiting for teams.

But TPTB have been doing all sort of different stuff.........so they just might hand out a penalty for getting lost.

The editing showed K/V getting their tickets at the airport........whether they did or not.....?

If the goths got tickets for the mandatory flight at the travel agent, they would have to "exchange" them for their new flight at the airport.

I imagine the thirty minute penalty the Goths are given is either for taking the wrong flight or for losing something.

Did anyone notice that CBS did not air Phil telling the teams there would be a U-Turn on the next leg?

I would think that the Goths do get a penalty for taking the wrong flight. Like "You were meant to ride the 9:50 A.M. required flight and did not, and for that you have received a 30 minute penalty." For example, Brian and Ericka in Season 15 walked on foot to the Detour location (I think) in the Netherlands rather than taking bikes. They didn't gain any time (it actually cost them quite a bit of time) but they were penalized for not following the rules.

So I would assume that you get a 30-minute penalty for doing something that you aren't supposed to do, including taking a different transportation from the required one, regardless of whether or not you gain time from it.

Also when Justin asks Kent "So you didn't take the flight that we were supposed to take?" I think it's foreshadowing something... xD

We still don't know for sure if there's any NEL penalty this season. I think the odds are that K/V will get the 30 minute penalty for not being on the required flight, they won't have any "time saved" added to that penalty since they didn't save any time.
I suspect they will be hit with a NEL penalty of some sort; if not that means WRP has abandoned the NEL penalty this season.
I also suspect K/V will also be U-Turned; in fact, if the teams use their brains (looking at M/L in particular), they will also U-Turn Z/J.

It is interesting to note that Phil did not say teams are under no obligation to use this flight. Similar to the Season 14 flight where teams had to go through Moscow to get to their next destination, however even in that case there was more than one way to get there.

I also think that the flight research was done at the stop over on the way to Kunming - the teams seemed way to relaxed haha

Well this is a TBC leg, just like Sydney. Jet and Cord were not penalized for checking in at the Sydney faux pit stop last, so I'm inclined think that this one works the same way and Kent and Vyxsin will not be penalized either. I think they might have just replaced NELs with TBC legs for this season to make it harder.

Title: Kent & Vyxin's scenic tour
Post by: maf on March 15, 2011, 05:02:30 PM
While working on the summary I noticed some things about the scenic tour Kent & Vyxin took of Japan. When Vyxin realize they are going in the wrong direction they are driving north (according to the compass). From this we can infer that they did indeed get onto the road to Tokyo in Kurihama, but then missed the turn off east to Narita and instead continued north.

So in the episode we get to see when Vyxin realize they are going in the wrong direction and the next shot shows Kent saying that they will probably miss the flight. But the catch is that Vyxin realize her mistake at 09.22 and Kent says that they will probably miss their flight at 09.05 (you can see watches in both scenes, boy do I love HD:-). So the editors are screwing with us and rearranging scenes chronologically (not a big surprise).

As was discussed during the first two episodes, these really cannot be called TBC legs; there have been instances in the past where TPTB had teams complete a leg, then within the same episode had teams start the next leg. The use of "TBC" now can't be used as a determinant of whether there is a leg, or an uberleg. The mandatory rest periods no longer have a standard length, and now, we can see that the length can be zero. With that, we have to look at the teams' arrival at the mat. If there is a greeter with Phil, then there is a leg; if there isn't and Phil tells a team to keep racing, then we've got a an uberleg.

(Some people call what I call an uberleg, a TBC leg. With the developments in this edition of the no rest period pit stop, I think I got it right in TAR 6 when I coined the "uberleg" as I've never adopted the "TBC" leg terminology.)

As to the NEL terminology, there were no NEL penalties the first four seasons, so I don't see a need to change the terminology. The only difference from those early seasons NELs is the no rest period pit stops.

However, Phil has not said "This is a pre-determined Non-Elimination Leg" therefore, these shouldn't be called NELs.

I suggest we define NELs as legs where Phil explicitly tells teams they have been spared and that we retire the term überleg and replace it for KRLs (Keep Racing Legs)

I like the idea of a new name for a new variation on a theme...then we all know what we mean.  Uberleg has worked for a long time...but now when I write NEL/TBC/uberleg...I always feel as though I need to explain what I mean.

But we have not seen the end of the traditional NEL either... :angel

Actually if people would have researched the flight options for that day, you probably would understand why teams were forced to fly on that 9:50am flight.

Not quite, Dr. Rox. If teams had been given that option, they would have discovered what I did, which is 3 flight combinations leaving not more than 55 minutes before the designated flight combination through Hong Kong and arriving at least one hour sooner into Kunming. More teams (probably all) would have made the same train as Ron/Christina did to Lijiang.

Tokyo to Kunming Sat. 11/27
flight choices:
NH5711 NRT CKG (Chonqing) 0855 1515, connecting to MU5722 CKG KMG 1555 1710

CA422 NRT PEK (Beijing) 0900 1200, connecting with CA4170 PEK KMG 1415 1740

NH919 NRT PVG (Shanghai) 0940 1210, connecting with CZ6799 PVG KMG 1420 1745

However, the end result of Bunching at the shuttle bus would not have changed.

Since they had about a 28 hour pit stop. I would assume that all the production crew, except the one's sheparding the teams along the way would have already left Japan the day before the teams did.

And I agree, co-ordinating shuttle buses and what not in Lijiang would not be something that could just be rescheduled. The mandatory flight arrangements must have been made weeks in advance, because as far as I know finding close to 40 seats on a flight last minute is quite hard  the plan being that teams were in Lijiang on a specific day (28th Nov I believe) with the plan to manipulate the pitstop for Japan as necessary.

It is also pretty obvious on episode 4 as telecast that there were fast-moving cars on the other side of the barrier to the right going the other direction. Also, in the Video Extras, Vyxsin made it clear that their compass was pointing west when they were driving the opposite way instead of to Narita. That means that the hypothesis made somewhere on this thread (I cannot find it) that they kept going north and failed to turn east is incorrect. They actually turned in the wrong direction (west instead of required east).

apskip..........did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe that Production got the teams to Kunming, EXACTLY when they wanted them there?
Dr. Rox,
Thay may be so; it's impossible to know without inside information. However, the question was essentially "what would teams have done if they had not been contrained by World Race Production mandatory arrangements?" The possibility that such arrangements were deliberate for a good reason (assuring that all teams got there or having teams delayed a bit for better HD camera work on arrival in Lijiang) is not relevant to that question.

But the point is that the teams were constrained by production. From your own research, there were other earlier arrivals. Production obviously didnt want teams in Kunming before the arrival of the mandated flights. The fact that teams flew to Hong Kong was known to us here at RFF shortly after the fact. We had a spoiler from a person that was on the flight and interacted with teams on the flight.

At the time, I concluded that spoiler was Mel/Mike heading to ES. I wasnt till later on that RFF realized that Production was really manipulating transportation this race to maximize daylight filming for HD.

My reference to "other people" did not include you. It was to the people that didnt do any flight reseach. Those of us that do reseach flights, including you, saw the multiple flight connections that would have gotten teams to Kunming earlier in the day.

In my humble opinion, I think that ^this^ settles the matter.
