Okay, everybody. Please, hold your applause till the end, we have a lot to get through here:

On flight QF108- Kisha and Jen first out of customs, followed by Amanda and Kris and Gary and Mallory

The three teams took a train to Sydney Cove (Circular Quay station), to retrieve a clue by the base of the Harbour Bridge:

On the train, Mallory said: "One of us could win the Express Pass"

The three leading teams took the 11:07 Fast Ferry to Manly (It was late, departed at about 11:15-11:20 ish.)

11:52- G/M, K/J, A/K arrive at Oceanworld Manly and go inside. The :angel stops to get something to eat, and waits.

12:38- A ferry arrives at Manly, the following teams run past :angel
-Flight Time and Big Easy (Herb and Nate)
-Margie (Being dragged by Luke)
-Jamie and Cara
-Kynt and Vyxsin
-Zev and Justin (wearing globetrotter shirts)

12:44- Mel and Mike and Ron and Christina run past.

12:55- Gary and Mallory are first team to leave Oceanworld, headed for Manly Yacht Club. :angel does not follow.

13:00- Another ferry docks at manly

13:03- Jet and Cord arrive at Oceanworld, currently in last place.

13:14- A/K and K/J exit Oceanworld together

13:25- Z/J leave Oceanworld and get in a taxi

13:40- M/L, Ja/Ca, FT/BE leave Oceanworld

13:45- M/L and Ja/Ca return to Oceanworld, they are lost. (:angel is slightly ticked that Ja/Ca were happy to run off on the others, until they realised they needed their help.)

13:54- Jet and Cord leave Oceanworld. :angel was busy in kiosk asking about teams and may have missed some teams

14:09- @ Yacht club. Teams are performing a sailing task. Teams are very scattered and :angel only catches small glimpses of several. Notably, Kisha and Jen pass Margie and Luke coming the other way, Kisha and Jen say "Good luck" and teams high five each other in a show of support.

14:23- Gary and Mallory sighted (Later learned they were coming back from Cabbage Tree Bay and phony Pit Stop)

~14:15-14:20? Gary and Mallory told to continue racing.

14:26- Amanda and Kris told to continue racing.

14:31- Kisha and Jen told to continue racing.

14:38- Zev and Justin told to continue racing.

14:59- Flight Time and Big Easy told to continue racing.

15:03- Jamie and Cara told to continue racing.

15:09- Margie and Luke told to continue racing.

15:14- Ronald and Christina told to continue racing.

15:15 (assumed)- Mel and Mike told to continue racing.

15:32- Kynt and Vyxsin (Who came in from the wrong direction) told to continue racing. (:angel suffers a bout of "OHMYGO****SKYNTANDVYXSIN" and follows them. :angel learns teams are taking a ferry back to Sydney. Vyxsin looking in bad shape at this point, can hardly stand up. :angel asks if she's ok and if she needs any help. Vyxsin says she'll be ok, thank you.)

Unknown time: Jet and Cord told to continue racing.

16:39- (On ferry back to Sydney) Kynt: "When we get to the outback we'll be driving, not running."

Roughly 18:15- Teams sighted waiting at town hall square.

18:30- :angel goes back to the airport to fly home.

Thanks Coutzy, BayBay, Dhall and all of the so many others who made this an incredible premiere spoiler leg!

Now just to confirm, there was no clue to Lavender Bay or Pyrmont Bridge?

Observations:
Jet/Cord probably fell behind when they missed the fast ferry by less than ten minutes, or when they assumed there wasn't one.
Gary/Mallory and Ronald/Christina probably fell behind when they mistakenly went to Pyrmont Bridge in search of "To Sail, To Stop".

I'm not sure what the conditions are for getting teams on the same flight to Tokyo:
QF 21 from Sydney to Tokyo, 2205-0615

But that should be easy as long as teams miss this flight:
CX 100 from Sydney to Hong Kong, 1540-2200
CX 524 to Tokyo, 0105-0600

Given teams make it into Sydney by 10.30am and have plenty of time (if in race mode) to make the Hong Kong flight, if Tokyo does turn out to be the next destination the evidence leans strongly towards DrRox's proposal of a roving Pit Stop, with teams held in Sydney until after 3pm.

Our Twitter friend (who seems to be from Shenzhen) arrived in Kunming by plane, saw the teams, and left Kunming on an 8.50pm train. He was headed to the airport when he made a tweet at 3.16pm, and made a second tweet at 4.42pm. The only flight from Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Kunming in this interval is: MU 5758 from Shenzhen to Kunming, 1710-1908 (scheduled 1655-1910)

Gary/Mallory are hence seen at Kunming airport around 7.15pm of 27 Nov. From Kunming, the earliest flight arrives in Lijiang at 9.35pm, the earliest train at 5.38am the next day. Since Lijiang isn't particularly pretty at night, it looks like the Lijiang race will take place on 28 Nov.

There isn't enough time for a leg in a third country between Japan and China, but the timing looks good for a second leg in Japan. However, if Phil decides to take his time getting to Lijiang, it's very possible 26 Nov was simply used for Phil's travel.

I should have recognised that train station! I missed a train there before... So teams are not allowed to fly to Lijiang, but assuming they must take the train (instead of having the option of taking the bus), here are the only two options tonight:

L9032/L9033: 2050-0538 (G/M's train)
K9606/K9607: 2216-0633

(I now realise how poor I am compared to many TAR fans...)

Going by Mad Joe's report that there are nine teams racing in Lijiang and that Lijiang was a non-elimination, it follows that there was only one leg in Japan. If there were two legs, one of them is necessarily a non-elimination, and we would have had only two eliminations in the first five legs (counting TBC as two).

"This was in Calcutta or Kolkatta as it is called now on the 2nd of December 1510hrs. Taking the kingfisher flight."

So...here are those flights....where are they heading??
IT 4577 to Ranchi, leaving 1755
IT 2503 to Bhubaneswar, leaving 1840
IT 3432 to Hyderabad, leaving 1845
IT 4579 to Patna, leaving 1905
IT 514 to Mumbai, leaving 2025
IT 604 to Delhi, leaving 2055

Ranchi, Bhubaneswar and Patna are pretty close to Kolkata, and with the Broken Hill-Sydney and Lijiang-Kunming rides this season the course probably would have sent racers on the train, taking about 8h to Ranchi or Patna and 7h to Bhubaneswar.

As for flights, there were two other flights between 3.10pm and the 6.45pm Kingfisher flight to Hyderabad, five other flights between 3.10pm and the 8.25pm Kingfisher flight to Delhi, and eight other flights between 3.10pm and the 8.55pm Kingfisher flight to Mumbai.

The only reasons they wouldn't take an earlier flight are:
1. Earlier flights are sold out, but with so many options it's unlikely.
2. Teams are connecting on a Kingfisher flight.

Hmm, looking at all Kingfisher's international destinations west of China, there doesn't seem to be any way out! Anyone with a clue?
Title: Re: The Amazing Race 18 TIMELINE/Spoiler Summary Thread
Post by: Neobie on December 05, 2010, 12:23:44 AM
A couple of possibilities. Goa, Thiruvananthapuram and Varanasi look the most likely.

Assumptions
1. Teams will not fly to Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, or Patna.
2. Teams with Hyderabad, Mumbai, or Delhi as their final destination would have taken an earlier flight.
3. Teams hence took Kingfisher to connect on another Kingfisher flight, or its partners American Airlines and British Airways.

Possible connections through Hyderabad
IT 3432 to Hyderabad, 1845-2050
Eliminated: Bangalore, Nagpur, Chennai, Vishakhapatnam
Possible: Tirupati, Rajahmundry

Possible connections through Mumbai
IT 514 to Mumbai, 2025-2340
Eliminated: London, Brussels, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kochi, Coimbatore
Possible: Goa, Kandla, Bhavnagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Nanded

Possible connections through Delhi
IT 604 to Delhi, 2055-2310
Eliminated: London, Brussels, Bangalore, Amritsar, Lucknow, Guwahati, Chennai, Pune, Dehra Dun, Bagdogra, Udaipur, Jaipur
Possible: Jabalpur, Kulu, Chandigarh, Varanasi, Simla, Dharamsala

I came to the same conclusion as you about the close to Kolkatta cities and trains......and all the others have quicker connections than on Kingfisher........except for Hyderabad. But there is no way to get to Goa from there quicker than going to Delhi or Mumbai

Is Vienna confirmed? I would think Africa would come after India, assuming there are 5 continents...

I only have been here since season 9...so you would have to ask the old timers!

Things have really changed with the advent of Twitter and FB posts. We almost NEVER used to have live info...it was all research, hours and hours of searching photo sites, and blogs, and trolling for the least mention of TAR somewhere.

Things are much more immediate now... and with all the info we have on this season, it hasn't been difficult at all! This is an enormous amount of info to work our way through, thank goodness we have some time.

The missing links will gradually fill in...this is what we do in the down time.

The race will be ending very soon, but the search is just beginning!! And all of Y'ALL will be helping, right??

A logical time for completion of AR18 All-Stars is tomorrow. That would allow Phil to get to New York City for the CBS cast party held on the night of the finale and allow him to be available for the CBS Early Show on Monday to chat with the winners.

Which would probably mean the finale is in New York City.

Not necessarily. Most places in the eastern half of the United States are a 2-3 hour flight away from New York City. Phil could easily catch a flight late Saturday night or more likely Sunday morning and arrive well in advance of the cast party Sunday night.

I think it is unlikely that the final leg of TAR 18 will be in New York City.

I agree with Plaidmoon2. It is easy to get to NYC from Miami, Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia or Boston. I don't think the finale will be in New York City, but this is just my speculation.

I don't think it will be in NYC either. Many fans of the race will know that everyone will be there for the finale party. Wouldn't it be too risky to send the contestants from this race there as well? It would spoil it for a lot of people who saw them.

Will Gary/Mallory got enough time to appear in the Finale Party?

I wouldn't bet on it. For one, they would not be the first team to miss the finale party of their own season (David/Mary & Dustin/Kandice also missed for Season 10). And even if their race was over, their appearance is no guarantee.  Again, back to Season 10, only the Top 3 teams were in New York that year (as several teams opted to stay warm/head to Los Angeles with many of those teams making the trip to NYC for the following All-Star season).

Finally, like D/M & D/K (for TAR11), Gary/Mallory will have the opportunity to make NYC in May, at which point if all goes well, people can ask them all the questions in terms of both TAR17 & TAR18.

akextofu07,

As someone who has been to Zermatt, let me assure you that not only are there no airplanes allowed on the ground  anywhere near it, but cars are forbidden in Zermatt. this helps keep it a cute expensive resort town which is totally mountainous and has no extended flat spaces for things like runways. The closest really major airport is Zurich over 3 hours ( I could look it up, but it is not germane to my position) away. From Zurich, here are best flight options to Rio:

fly to Paris, connect to Rio (2 flight combinations)
fly to Sao Paulo, connect to Rio
fly to Frankfurt, connect to Rio
fly to Lisbon, connect to Rio

So, Madrid is not among the top options as a connecting point, although that does not mean that some AR18 teams did not use it. Maybe there were not enough seats on one of the better options. If you really have a desire to see these details, go to post#1 in the AR18 Primary Transportation Options thread.

can i assume that.....

1) since all teams are strong this season, it is highly unlikely they would be stuck in one task,  Gary and Mallory are guanranteed winner by using their express pass in the last leg.

2) I read somewhere in the spoiler thread, one leg Gary and Mallory came last but were not eliminated. I don't know if they used express pass or not, if they still have it, they are still guanranteed to win by not making any huge mistakes.

it's not so fair and not so exciting to give out express pass this season, because all teams are strong and racing second time, as long as the team doesn't make mistakes that are fatal. They could win.
If Gary and Mallory haven't used the express pass by episode 9. then great chances they are the winner.

I think Phil did mention that the Express Pass can only used up to Leg 8. Probably they used it on Leg 8 and claim first or something?

Express pass in no longer in play

I overestimate Gary and Mallory's overall ability...

You didn't overestimate them... They are a very strong team.  Even the strongest of teams can have a bad leg or two.  They used their EP in an appropriate place.

I for one have enjoyed this season from the great spoiler day in Australia in November to the aired finale last night.

And thank you, Peach, for not revealing the winner. Had I known they would win back in December I would not have enjoyed this season or the final as much. The surprise finish was at least half the fun. I would have also missed out on the fun of rooting for a team to win as that would be useless with a bootlist.

Congrats to all the detectives and spotters and everyone who made a speculation or a comment this year, it was great fun!

So Peach- now that it's over, I'm curious to know....did you know the final outcome this whole time? How much detail did you know before watching it on tv?
