It looks like it has lifts, wherever it is; there's a slope outside of town called Luossavaara with some lifts, but it doesn't match the viewpoint in the cap.

We now have a more complete episode description from CBS, and it sounds as if we will see the "giving back" at the Ghana village's school:

Quote

TEAMS TRAVEL FROM THE SUFFOCATING HEAT OF AFRICA TO THE SHIVERING COLD TEMPERATURES OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE, ON "THE AMAZING RACE," SUNDAY, OCT. 17

"We Should Have Brought Gloves and Butt Pads" (Sweden) - After teams volunteer at a local school in Ghana, THE AMAZING RACE makes it's first-ever trip to the Arctic Circle, where one couple finds themselves in an unfortunate position and contemplate making a game changing decision, on THE AMAZING RACE, Sunday, Oct. 17 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Phil Keoghan is host.

Well, thanks to the non-elimination we know that the next team that's Philiminated is one of the following teams:

Chad & Stephanie,
Connor & Jonathan,
Katie & Rachel
& Nick & Vicky.

I don't think it's Chad & Stephanie (they're featured in the preview), though they could still be out.  I don't think it's Connor & Jonathan either (they're in first), although they too could be out.  That leaves me with Katie & Rachel and Nick & Vicky as the most likely suspects.

The public service project at the Asebi D/A Primary School will not cost teams anything in terms of when they get to Europe. The timing of reaching the pit stop for leg 3 should be noon plus or minus. Team could get a 18 hour pit stop and be ready to start the work project at 6am plus or minus and work until dark.

The best flight is Luthansa to Frankfurt departing at 10:03pm, which is why it does not cost them an extra day. I commend World Race Productions for innovative thinking in how to utilize what would otherwise have been an Extended Pit Stop early in the race.

When Claire mentions not bringing snow boots I believe they may be in the Ice Hotel that was mentioned a while back.

In cap 13 you can see the sled dogs and their houses behind the rider...

I'm not 100% certain, but caps 12 and 13 (the video gives a better look in the background) look like they match up with the scene of the Snowtrail Dogcamp Lodge about 2/3 of the way down this page:

http://www.kirunadogcamp.com/winter-lappland.html (http://www.kirunadogcamp.com/winter-lappland.html).

You're right, north09, scenes in previews 1 and 2 clearly match up with the Ice Hotel (as if there was much doubt). There's a nice video of the ice hotel on this page:

http://www.simplysweden.co.uk/icehotel/ (http://www.simplysweden.co.uk/icehotel/).

Sorry, I'm at work, so I can't grab images or videos and embed them.  :(

ICEHOTEL is situated in the village Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, 12 km from Kiruna Airport.

Def see the ICEHOTEL clearly...can anyone get a matching airport shot?
Chateau has the ski resort...
And what is on the back of Brook's clue? ???

No I haven't seen the video, just the caps. but  I do not think that is the real Ice hotel. It looks more like the storage shed where they store the ice over the summer. There are a number of ice blocks stored in the background, and the place looks very big. As far as I know the actual ice hotel lacks any really large indoor spaces. Also as far as I know the hotel should be melted when the race passed by.

To me it looks like the back of the clue just reads "Route info" written in two different fonts on top of each other.

Go to their site and look at the photos maf...it is an exact match, right down to the ice chandelier.

Interstingly, both the ICEHOTEL and Riksgransen offer dogsledding...can we figure which one is ours? I think more like the ICEHOTEL...but good to be sure!

I beg to differ. I think they have just built up a part of the Ice hotel interior inside their Ice factory. The chandelier is the same and next to it is an arch. But in the real ice hotel pics that arch is actually the walls of the hotel. In the warehouse it is just a separate arch, which we see in the preview.

Also the hotel closes in April due to melting http://www.icehotel.com/uk/ICEHOTEL/Stay-at-ICEHOTEL/ (http://www.icehotel.com/uk/ICEHOTEL/Stay-at-ICEHOTEL/).

But I do not think it is worth arguing over this. We will find out when the episode airs  :yess:

I have not been able to find any picture matches from the inside of Kiruna airport. But the pictures look like the typical small Swedish airport so I would say it is a fair chance they are from Kiruna.

The dogsledding landscape looks flat with trees.  That matches the area around the IceHotel.  Also, the time of day is earlier for the dogsledding.  The sun looks much higher than the snowy shots at Riksgransen.

Those photos of the teams at the ice hotel are definitely inside a building. How do I know? I spent 3 years at Deadhorse, AK. Deadhorse is at 70 degrees NORTH latitude. Kiruna is at 68 degrees north latitude. On June 1st, there is no DARK sky at that latitude. So it has to be inside a building. Now you might say well the ice hotel itself will keep out the light.....no way. The sunlight would shine through the ice. It is most definitely inside their cold storage warehouse. That way they dont have to construct the parts again next winter.

At Deadhorse, we had about 70 days when the sun never set. It got close, but was always in the sky. That means about 35 days before June 21st, and about 35 days after June 21st. It is pretty weird, but the sun just went around in circles for those 70 days.

Here is the position of the sun on the day Teams were at Riksgransen.  The sun is never below the horizon and even shines from due North just around midnight!

the No doubt we will hear Phil tell us that Riksgransen is the Northernmost ski resort in the world.  And that they have all-day all-night 24-hour skiing there.

I looked up the weather data for May and early June 2010 for Kiruna on the weather underground site (http://www.wunderground.com (http://www.wunderground.com)). May had an average high temperature of 49, an average low temperature of 33 and a mean temperature of 41. Unless the building had refrigeration built in (doubtful), it would have been melting for weeks before TAR 17 arrived. I have to agree with maf that we will be seeing some reconstructed portions of the Ice Hotel in a refrigerated warehouse.

For what it's worth, the weather at Kiruna when TAR was there was not too extraordinary. June 1st had a high of 48 and a low of 32, no precipitation and winds around 10 mph in the afternoon. June 2nd had a high of 59 and a low of 32 with winds of 10 to 20 mph from 8 AM until 4 PM and some light rain (officially not measurable - less than 0.01") after 10 PM.

Thanks Plaidmoon! Here is the Snowtrail Dog Camp with some other caps of the doggie houses...what do y'all think?

Why in heaven's name were you at Deadhorse?

Cuz I got paid exhorbitant amounts of money to dig holes in the ground.  I thought I told you before. I was up there before they built the haul road. We worked 42 on and 21 off. It's a VERY lonely place......lol

I used to fly from Deadhorse to Honolulu with stopover in Anchorage. We would go from -70 to +70 in matter of hours......talk about shock. The Hawaiians would really thing we were crazy wearing T shirts and shorts. We got on the plain in feathers and micky mouse boots and got off in T shirts and shorts. I miss the days of the Wienie birds. I actually exchange emails occasionally with the grandson of the guy that started Wien Air Alaska. He posts the Cockpit Chronicles at Gadling.com.

At those latitudes, the air temp is about a tertiary measure of the heat. It's about the Heat of Fusion and the tremendous about of radiant energy sucked up by the ice and snow and held. The specific heat of water molecule is so high it just takes a long time for the sun's energy to get back into the air and heat it up.

There's a lot to choose from: in addition to the one Peach found, there's HuskySafari (http://www.huskysafari.com/eng/contact.htm), HuskyTours (http://www.huskytours.com/), Kiruna Sleddog Tours (http://www.sleddog.se/), Active Lapland (http://activelapland.com/active-lapland/) and probably several others. I'll probably be eating lots of crow later, but for now I'll calling it...it's the hood for a black bear on the costume of a brown bear. The face (eyes, mouth open, etc.) doesn't change a mm, and the "bear" stays rampant the whole time.

I live way way south of snowmobile country, but I just assumed it was a mini-snowmobile. Along the same line as mini-motorcycles and mini-4wheelers that they manufacture for little people.

I think the LA based web monkeys (who have probably never seen snow) are using a very loose interpretation of the term "snowmobile".
We call them snow racers  - non-motorized downhill thingys - lots of fun but hard on the butt.

I HAVE PREVIOUSLY POSTED A MAP OF kIRUNA TO NARVIK. THE LINE IS PRIMARILY FOR FREIGHT, SPECIFICALLY IRON ORE. iT IS SINGLE TRACK.
THE STATION NEAR THE BORDER  OF SWEDEN AND NORWAY ON THE SWEDISH SIDE IS VASSIJEURE.

Malmbanan, "the ore rail", is a railway line between Luleå, Sweden, and Narvik, Norway. The part of the line that is on Norwegian territory between Narvik and Riksgränsen is called Ofotbanen. The Swedish part of the line is the northernmost railway in Sweden and in the whole of the European Union.

The line is used by the mining company LKAB to transport their iron ore from the mines in Kiruna and Malmberget to the ports in Narvik and Luleå. The railway allows 8600 tonnes train weight and 30 tonnes axle weight. Both figures are higher than any other Scandinavian railway. In a voting about Sweden's most beautiful railway, organised by Banverket in 2006 among railway employees, the route between Torneträsk and the border won by a clear margin.

THE LIST OF STATIONS IS:

Hmm. Can't tell what that word is on the clue (Goabie?), but the tent sure looks like a Tentipi Safir (http://www.tentipi.com/index.php?id=52). Not sure how "traditional" it is, but it's a nice tent.

I think it is called a Goahte:

Quote
Goahte was the most common dwelling place for the nomadic Sámi. It reminds of other nomadic peoples ”houses”. A kind of a tent, made of poles covered with blankets, which were easy to take down and put up during migration routes. It was open in the top so you could make a fire at the middle of the floor. My grandfather used to say ”anywhere you make your fire will be your home for the night”. He did not always have a goahte with him when he was herding the reindeer so he often slept under the open sky. But just by making a fire than you can feel like you are at home. The fire was the most important thing in the home, you could cook on it and it kept you warm. One of the goddesses lived under the campfire and you should give her some sacrifice after eating your meal. The place opposite the door was the kitchen. It was a holy place where the drum was kept and another of the goddesses lived.

Lots more about the Sami here...I learned a lot from this episode! Seems as though these  are who I always called the Laplanders...but apparently that is considered a somewhat derogatory term, and Sami is preferred. The people we see in the screencapscaps in the colorful costumes are Sami.

How are things judged when some areas on eastern time in the US get the show on time, and other areas on east coast time don't?

And how would someone know at what point the delayed feeds on the east coast in the US are?

It's one thing when almost everyone on the east coast is being delayed by CBS at the same time; but it appears this week the feeds were going out to different US east coast markets at three different times. Even if you know you are in a delayed area of the US east or central time zones, you don't know if you are in the most delayed area, and that seems to have been the issue this week.

I was even confused as to posting or not and my area started on time this week.

This was an awesome episode! But i'm really sad that Connor and Jonathan got eliminated! They were just starting to grow on me! However, they can blame no one for it. They were the first to the airport and they just wanted to camp at the gate of the slower flight?! But they made an extremely memorable exit by singing their way out.. it was nice to hear but saddening to watch.

The Detour was awesome! One showed the culture of the country whereas the other showed the sights and fun of it. LOVED the Sleds!!

The Roadblock was very cool too! With the dogs and racing and everything!! This was definitely a TRULY memorable leg and i don't know if i'm the only one but i really really liked this leg.

I like the fact that teams were allowed to find their own flight as well!! Self-driving (although no one got lost) as well!

I was really hoping Kevin and Michael will come in first.. but aww, you can't expect much because i'm very sure Michael can't do SLEDS.. (quite sure) Some people might find it sad that Kevin is always basing Detour choices on what his father cannot do, but i beg to think different because he's actually willing to go slow for his dad! Admirable spirit there!

And Chad and Stephanie.. Chad broke down for around 5mins on the show.. and then he was all good to Stephanie again. I'm liking Chad and Stephanie BETTER than Jill and Thomas. So much more better.

And speaking of Jill and Thomas, at that circumstance when they're around with no teams and have no idea how long it will take to build the tent, it was definitely a smart choice to use it. BUT, because the other teams suck at SLEDS.. it became a bad move because they could have built the tent and still come in 6th.. (Nick and Vicki will move up to 5th)

And i loved how Michael and Kevin and Nat and Kat are like DARN smart. If Michael and Kevin didn't win the leg, Nat and Kat deserves to win this leg because they did find this flight on their own! As for Brooke and Claire and Gary and Mallory, let's just say they better remember the help they got from Nat and Kat and Michael and Kevin.

Loads of thoughts after this episode. IT WAS TRULY GREAT!

And sucks that a fake bear has to appear. WHAT WAS THAT FOR?? :lol3:

My recollection of the Jill/Thomas Beds DETOUR is hazy, but I believe that they were having difficulty with Beds and did not wish to take the risk of being unable to complete it and finishing last if they did not use their Express Pass.

I haven't re-wached the episode yet - but I think TPTB pulled some flight shenanigans. They never mentioned Stockholm at all and made it seem that the flights went directly from Frankfurt to Kiruna - which couldn't have happened - there are no direct flights.
Here are the flight details AFAIK:

All Teams - From (ACC) Accra to FRA Frankfurt LH 567 Lufthansa 21:55 22:03 Landed On-time 333 06:38

Early Teams - From FRA Frankfurt to ARN Stockholm LH 3000 Lufthansa 07:35 07:47 T-1 A Landed On-time 319 09:45
Late Teams - From FRA Frankfurt to ARN Stockholm LH 3002 Lufthansa 09:50 09:55 T-1 A Landed On-time 319 11:51

Early Teams - From ARN Stockholm to KRN Kiruna SK 1042 SAS - Scandinavian Airlines 11:05 11:07 T-4 Landed On-time 736 12:31

walkingpneumonia,

See my analysis of this in AR17 flight Information thread. It's essentially the same as yours. LH567 landed 8 minutes late at 638 (thanks for the correction Dr. Rox; I had carried the minutes over from actual departure time erroneously). With the 638am actual time, negotiating a transfer in notorious for connections problems Frankfurt airport would have allowed 67 minutes.  It is possible that the first group of teams took DY3761 dep. ARN 1030 arr. KRN 1155 to add an extra 0.60 hours onto the advantage you show of 2.15 hours.

My flight tracker program also shows LH567 arriving at FRA at 638......3 minutes late from scheduled time. It really doesnt make any difference, since we know all 4 teams made the early connection to ARN. Maybe WP and I use the same program....It shows the FRA/ARN flight leaving at 1045, for total of 67 minutes of transit time.

Am i the only one who thinks Nick and Vicki are really a cute couple around here?!

I really like Nat and Kat and Gary and Mallory. Nick and Vicki, Michael and Kevin and Brooke and Claire are in the middle pack.. with me feeling neutral towards Jill and Thomas, Chad and Stephanie and Katie and Rachel (slipped down).

And i think i enjoy watching Chad and Stephanie more than Jill and Thomas.. Jill and Thomas, i don't know.. are kinda boring.

My favorite team is Nat & Kat but I also like Michael & Kevin, Brook & Claire and Gary & Mallory.  Behind them are Nick & Vicky, Katie & Rachel, Jill & Thomas and Chad & Stephanie.  I don't really hate any of them like I hated some teams from other seasons -- yet.

Two good episodes in a row.  Haven't seen that in a while.
Trivia: the pennants they grabbed during the dogsled run were the Sami flag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sami_flag) and its constituent colors.

Possible where they stayed??

OFF PISTE ABOVE THE ARCTIC CIRCLE

Riksgransen (46-980-400-80; www.riksgransen.nu) is more than 130 miles north of the Arctic Circle, in Lapland on the Sweden-Norway border. Most visitors arrive by flying into Kiruna, Sweden, then taking the train or a bus shuttle (less than two hours). A car isn’t necessary. There are also airports about 35 miles west, in both Narvik and Harstad/Evenes, Norway. Note: Many intra-Europe carriers now charge extra for skis.

A good Web site for train information and reservations from Sweden is www.bokatag.se. Bus transfer details on the Swedish side: www.ltnbd.se. For trains from Norway: www.nsb.no.

The season here is mid-February until the end of June. Easter weeks are always fully booked so plan at least six months in advance for those times. Midnight-sun skiing begins on weekends starting around May 10. Lift tickets cost 310 kronor ($36.21 at 8.56 kronor to the dollar). From about Easter through June the entire resort is often sold out on weekends.

Heli-skiing is offered in packages of one to three runs (the latter the most economical; 1,395 to 2,195 kronor).

WHERE TO STAY

The smartest rooms are at the two-year-old, 14-room Meteorologen Ski Lodge (46-73-503-24-17; www.meteorologen.se). Doubles range from 1,600 to 4,000 kronor per night, including breakfast.

The large Hotel Riksgransen, next door, has 170 rooms in a variety of sizes. The hotel also has a spa. Doubles range from 900 kronor, low season without breakfast, to 3,400 kronor with breakfast in high season.

On the dog race, what is the thing they are riding on? Its not a quad bike, but it looks like it a strange go-cart that has been pimped

Any info from you amazing tar detectives?

During the episode, I believe Phil said they were using training dog sleds with wheels that they used to train the husky pups.

Well, to me they dont look like sleds. Sleds dont have Bicycle Steering, and the wheels look strange. There must be something under all that pimping

And Chad and Stephanie.. Chad broke down for around 5mins on the show.. and then he was all good to Stephanie again. I'm liking Chad and Stephanie BETTER than Jill and Thomas. So much more better.
I agree.  Chad can be a bit much sometimes, but he admits when he's wrong and realized he was too hard on Stephanie.  And there's something fun and entertaining about them.  Compared to Jill & Thomas, at least.  Jill's very sweet and nice, and I actually like her a lot, but Thomas has this passive-aggressiveness in the way he talks to and deals with Jill that I don't like at all.

The dog training sleds have to have wheels for off-season training (no snow on ground). The setup is almost like what the set-up was with using a team of horses for carriage transportation a couple of centuries ago.....there is some sort of device used to allow the drive to gradually turn the carriage in one direction or another.
