*I saw what I think was an AR crew filming just now (noon PST) on California Street in San Francisco. Was nearly toppled by a man running with a handheld camera. He stopped at California and Larkin to capture the image of two men (I think) walking with a large locked trunk. They were walking towards Polk Street. May investigate further while I buy a pizza slice.

With BIG thanks to TrebledTimes at TWoP for this elaboration on his original sighting on 12/20 in San Fran: (He was linked to our photos for comparisons)

What I can say with 100% certainty was that it was noon PST at the corner of Larkin and California Streets. What I saw were two large guys wearing navy blue fleeces or jackets carrying what looked like a large locked trunk. I was across the street and they were facing the other direction. I'm not sure I could even hazard a guess based on those photos, although I would say with 90% certainty they were wearing navy blue. And the film crew were quite agro (they nearly knocked me over, which is why I noticed what they were doing) which leads me to believe it was actual footage they were after.

Plaidmoon2:
* jenbakerbrown: the two guys we saw were young and wearing cowboy hats. The officer at customs told me they were from Amazing Race

Macaroons:
I spoke to someone else in San Fran who saw the cowboys around the Great American Music Hall, which is on O'Farrell Street. They said they were very frantic and tried to get a cab but there was someone in it. They tried to get the people to give up the cab but they wouldn't so they ran to the next street over, Geary Street and caught a cab there.

I don't know if there was something at the Music Hall or if it was just the nearest landmark to describe where they were. Here is a map of it in comparison to Coit Tower. Notice that it is towards heading back in the direction of Hunter's Point, which would be further to the bottom right of what this map shows.

Remember Chateau and peach's "fieldtrip" to the finale locations, just 10 days after the finale itself?

Chateau and I made a field trip yesterday to some of our projected Finale City locations. We pretty much hit all the sites at just about the same time teams would have been there as well. Some new info!!

Based on this tweet:

Quote
Storm Troopers are escorting 'Amazing Race' contestants through the Letterman Digital Arts Center
10:25 AM Dec 20th from txt --dylbeck

Our first stop was right here:

We managed to get DIRECT CONFIRMATION (two sources) that yes, TAR 16 was filming there on Sunday AM 12/20. Teams entered thru the main visitor parking lot, and apparently went directly to YODA. Storm Troopers were definitely involved as well. And best of all, GEORGE LUCAS and other key executives were there as well.[/size]

The rest of the fieldtrip and the pictures can be seen right here:

I think this is the 1st official word from CBS that the finale is in SF?

I kept trying to figure out how the other teams could make up time if there ends up being no bunching point in San Francisco.

After reading Phil's comments in TVGuide, I decided to look back at the potential tasks.

There are two that stand out to me:
Quote
ROUTE INFO: Find and climb Coit Tower
EVIDENCE: Team spotted, confirmation of crew dismantling equipment

OTHER POSSIBLE TASKS:
ROUTE INFO: Carry large locked trunk to…?
EVIDENCE: Probable decoy team (Mike & Louis) spotted with large trunk at California and Larkin streets (around noon)

If all team members have to climb the tower and heights become an issue for Jordan, then the other teams can definitely make up some time here.

If they have to carry a trunk and it is significantly heavy, Jet & Cord definitely have the strength advantage over the other two teams and can make up time here.

I just hope Phil is not speaking in hyperbole.

Speculating for the title now... I think it's Jordan that says that about the tower they have to climb.

So, judging from the preview for the finale episode, can we assume that whatever 30 minute lead Dan/Jordan had on the other two teams is rendered irrelevant?? I only assume this because Cord and Jordan are shown performing (presumably) the Virtual Reality task simultaneously.

Oh my gravy!! Did teams CHECK their bags?? Is that an airline tag on the Cowboys bags??

That could kill a lead as weell...

Thanks puddin!! :hearts:

And Coit Tower was gold all along....  :yess:

And the tower must be the dreaded ascender RB!! We only see one team member doing it, right?

Wonder if the virtual reality task involves a memory task?? ??? Y'all know that was at Lucas Films right??  :vader:

I don't think it's an RB, since Brent's doing it and he hit 6 already. Not sure if it's additional task or detour...

Maybe the VR thing is the RB

Either it's a final partner task (both Cord and Dan seemed to be at some control booth presumably communicating with their partners), or it's a RB where your partner can help you--like the final RB of Season 9. Of course in that one, the person choosing to do it had to do a lot of the physical work, whereas the VR task seems like the teammates have to work equally in tandem.

The tower should be the roadblock.

Do we have a memory challenge?  :'(

There appear to be at least two miscellaneous tasks.

Let the third time in my home city be the charm!  :yess:

Maybe the trunk is a memory task - it kind of looks like an old fashioned travel trunk. It could be full of items representing various locales and tasks, and when they arrive at their destination the memory task begins??  :duno:

I wonder if this task involves the pioneer trunk factory (also known as c.a. malm&co.) on folsam  street??  It is a Heritage site.... Trying to set up a link but having computer troubles :(

Agree, the blue one on cowboys' bag is just a name tag, with words "Name Label" and Chinese 姓名牌 on it, probably just those you could get in airport check-in counter

It's probably from the previous flight from Singapore because China Eastern uses the same tag (I have one myself)

I'm guessing the trunk has something to do with San Francisco's history:  Gold rush, or Pony Express...something like that.  Then we have Star Wars, so we have historical SF and modern/future SF.

According to you...nearly all of them!! :funny:  Just put down Brent and Caite once and I think you'll have covered all the bases.

Its Jet and Cord/Dan and Jordan/Brent and Caite (45/45/10)

No. Jet and Cord won.

Its a fact that Dan and Jordan won.

... most probably Dan and Jordan will win. Jet and Cord 1st runner up, Brent and Caite 2nd

Either they lost a lot of time finding Yoda or the visual arts task took a long time.  The brothers left SFO before 9 am.  Two and a half hours later they are trunking on California St.   :groan:

Maybe the trunk is a memory task - it kind of looks like an old fashioned travel trunk. It could be full of items representing various locales and tasks, and when they arrive at their destination the memory task begins??   :duno:
I wonder if this task involves the pioneer trunk factory (also known as c.a. malm&co.) on folsam  street??  It is a Heritage site.... Trying to set up a link but having computer troubles :(

I like that idea caper!!

Here is some info from the Nat Historic registry pages:

Is their site near where we see everyone?

Oh my gravy!! Did teams CHECK their bags?? Is that an airline tag on the Cowboys bags??

That could kill a lead as weell...
I noticed that the cowboys had tags on their bags during both Shanghai legs - maybe they were practicing to be decoys .
You can clearly see them just after they leave the starting pitstop in Ep 11.

I think the foreshadowing about not U-Turning one of the strongest teams was the tell as to who wins.

Or more likely wishful thinking on my part.

Well, it's looks right now at least that Brent and Caite will come third.
Most likely it'll be a toss up between Dan and Jordan and Jet and Cord.

But then again, we don't have a shot of Jet and Cord with the box...

It appears that the final day is going to be a grand tour of San Francisco. Based on what we know the teams are all over SF and many of these locations are difficult places, Coit Tower is hell to get to, Nob Hill is perhaps one of the worst in the City to do on foot and I can't help but wonder if one of the teams goes to the wrong Lucas Films Center (at the Presidio, also hard to get to)  and ends up in Marin County instead as it's the far better known of the Lucas centers.

Coming from China they will have to fly into SFO (and not Oakland as they did the last time they went to SF). I'm not sure a million bucks is enough to get me to go to SFO. SFO is not in San Francisco but a good distance south.

...an angry confrontation awaits another at the finish line...

hmmm,  I would put money that Brandy and Carol have their say with Brent and Caite (especially if they don't win)....and then for good measure I can see Joe jumping into the battle, what with all his love for Mike and Louie and the "personal vs strategic use of the U-turn"....just saying!!!   :lol3:

Do the decoy teams see/talk with the remaining teams during pit stops, at airports, etc?

I think its safe to assume it comes down to Jet and Cord vs. Dan and Jordan. If the cowboys are at least 30 minutes ahead of Brent and Catie and the brothers are also ahead, that already puts them in last. We also don't see them with any other teams in the promos. I can also see the cowboys cutting in line and upseting Brent and Catie. I have yet to see the brothers loose it with another team outside of confessionals.

I really don't want to see Brent & Caite win, and I'm so glad they are about 30 minutes behind the other teams. If they were to win, it would be the worst ending yet.

Based on the footage that has already aired Dan & Jordan mention (in more then one episode) that they wouldn't play a game of elbows (pushing teams around/making waves) until the finale leg.

It wouldn't surprise me if they do cut in line, at this point they have nothing to loose.  And its the perfect time to do so.

BUt of course any team could.

As for asking who won, even if certain persons did know, I would doubt they would spoil it, unless the footage was a dead, dead give away (yeah season 10 I'm talking to you).  I think we have all learned that giving away the big reveal does damage to the show (All Stars).  Breaking down the rest of the episode, though thats were you have fun.

Coit Tower was built in Pioneer Park atop Telegraph Hill in 1933 at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the City of San Francisco; Lillie bequeathed one-third of her estate to the City of San Francisco "to be expended in an appropriate manner for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city which I have always loved".[1]

Contrary to popular opinion, the tower was not designed to resemble a fire hose nozzle.[2] This belief persists in part because of Lillie Hitchcock Coit's affinity with the San Francisco fire fighters of the day, in particular with Knickerbocker Engine Company Number 5. Although the architects claimed to have no design precedent in mind,[citation needed] during this time Europe saw the construction of aesthetically designed power stations that could be claimed as prototypes (e.g.: Battersea Power Station).

The art deco tower, 210 feet (64 m) of unpainted reinforced concrete, was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard with murals by 26 different artists and numerous assistants.[citation needed]

One last missing piece of the Finale puzzle...the PITSTOP!! :hearts:

Thanks to an awesome initial find by Ryan83, and then some more work by Chateau, puddin, Slowhatch (and me  :flirt: )....

we early on localized the Pitstop to somewhere in Hunter's Point in San Fran.

I am delighted to now be able to say that the final PitStop should be located at

CANDLESTICK PARK

I just have a feeling that the final tasks are going to end up favoring Jet-Cord for the win.  The more information that comes out from the promos and tweets, and the excellent analysis work by the TAR Detectives Team reinforces in my mind that even if they're the last out of the airport, they still will pull out a win in the final leg. And I doubt they'll have any trouble with cabdrivers getting to Candlestick Park, one of the iconic locations in American sports history. (And if there is a memory task of some sort at the finish, I think that will favor Jet-Cord as well.

(For the record my guts says Jordan and Dan for second, Brent and Caite for third.)

Actually, Jet, Caite and Jordan are the ones doing the VR simulation, and Cord and Dan are doing something else in the same location which is unknown to me. So, it can't be RB because Jet already hit 6.

Hmmm...I still think the VR simulation is the Roadblock since both Cord and Caite are doing it...

but didn't the earlier preview show dan & cord at some sort of control screen? (with dan shouting to jordan to not walk so fast... tink jet's the cowboy with the VR suit thing since the 3D cowboy has a black hat ;p)  does seems like this is a detour/route marker since both team members are working together

Great screencaps, Peach!

I was analyzing the caps and noticed the focus are on Dan and Jordan. And based on the pics of the eliminated teams and that pic of Jody and Shannon, they looked surprised. Me thinks it's Dan and Jordan!

My take is that Jet and Cord won. Look at the 1 of the photos where they are smiling happily while running to the finish line. Its kinda obvious though.

Where they ever NOT smiling in (at least on tv) during the entire season? They've shown their positive attitudes the entire way!  :lol3:

We never see them running to the finish line. The one of them running is at the Letterman Center, the first task.

Peach/Puddin, can we get some more caps of the Star Wars parody text swirling behind the VR Jordan? Wondering if it has any significance?

Here's what I'm seeing:

My impression is that Cord, Dan and Brent are controlling the VR Jet, Jordan and Caite. We hear Dan say "go slower" as Jordan's VR  walks into the wall....

SO this is probably the first route marker.

Looks like an ascender for Coit Tower? We see Caite standing by watching, suggesting that she is either waiting her turn or only one has to do it....but we have a Tweet that says both Brent and Caite climbed. (All the tweets are summarized in post 2)

Locked trunk, both teams doing it...detour option? Or I love the idea that whatever is inside gets taken to a memory challenge...IF we ever see one of those again. :groan:

So if the stadium inside is the PitStop, then there won't be a memory challenge right inside.....

If we are lucky enough to need  memory challenge  location, Chateau and I found a lovely little park right across the street from the stadium... ???

I have to agree with JGR (even though I don't want to). If you notice Carol and Brandy in the screencaps, they seem sort of unhappy, they're not clapping enthusiastically. My guess is that either A) they're still bitter about being eliminated or B) Brent and Catie get first.

Well, it could be taped, and it's possible that they were told by the director to enthusiastically clap, even there is no team approching.

I think that it proves that Star Wars is before Trunk (which is already know). From What I see, I can read

" A long time ago, on a hill far, far, away soldiers returned (or something similar) ___ South Pacific demanded ___ place where they could _____ed nights spent beneath the waves and cooled by the ______. They built this Poly____ and they called it____.

I don't think there will be a Detour on the final leg.  They usually want all three teams to perform the same tasks going to the finish mat.

I found it on Sling, but I don't want to embed it from there.  It's still the CBS version, but I don't know if it has the same viewing restrictions.

You can give it a try.

PS - I'll let someone else decipher the whole thing, but the end of the text is "They built this Polynesian haven and they called it Tonga!"

Hmmm.... I have no idea about the order of the tasks, but at the top of the hill where they are carrying the trunks are several old historic hotels. One of them (the Fairmont?) has a famous bar/entertainment lounge called the Tonga Room. That could be where they are going with the trunks. Or I could be grasping at a coincidence.

I'm at work, so I can't look into this. I'll leave that as an exercise for the readers.

I don't think it's been uploaded to YouTube yet.  I found another site with the CBS video embeded, so this probably won't help, but it's here: http://www.mefeedia.com/tv/31039569

Thinking that the goal of the VR game could be to find and read this message to give them the location of their next clue?

The Tonga Room (http://www.tongaroom.com/) makes most sense to me -- it's a landmark and matches the description in the clue (it opened in 1945, just after WW2).   to plaidmoon and jerseydude.

To me it sounds like Airport -> Coit Tower -> Lucas Films -> Tonga Room -> Take trunk to Great American Music Hall or Curran Theater or somewhere near by for a memory task with the trunks? - Then to the pit stop at Candlestick Park (or Monster Park or whatever they are calling it these days).

The Tonga Room (http://www.tongaroom.com/) makes most sense to me -- it's a landmark and matches the description in the clue (it opened in 1945, just after WW2).  to plaidmoon and jerseydude.

Great great job guys!!  LOVE it! :hearts: :jumpy: :hearts:

Take another look at Chateau's stuff--by Chateau's times, we have Lucas films, Coit Tower, then trunks right? Or do I have it bassakwards?? ??? I know from **coughcough** the day that Coit tower was pretty done by 1130...and Lucas seems to take a couple of hours, so thought trunks came after Coit...also by Tweet times (all that is in post 1).

We should be able to map out whether they are moving towards the Tonga Room or away though...

They're walking away from the Tonga--and if the strain in the promo caps is any indication, the trunks are empty (or nearly so).

So I'm thinking that might be Dan & Jordan, already finished with Coit Tower.  Then Cowboys do Coit Tower at 10:45 (half hour before Brent & Caite) and catch up to Dan & Jordan at Letterman DAC.

Airport -> Coit Tower -> Letterman -> Tonga -> Trunk Place -> Candlestick Park seems to be the likely order. If they throw in a memory task, it should be at Hunter's Point (which is adjacent to Candlestick Park).

Do we know when the flight from Shanghai landed? We could then trace the teams' movement from there.

EDIT: Airport -> Letterman -> Tonga -> Coit Tower -> Trunk Place -> Candlestick Park now seems more likely.

The plane landed at 845.....and it is a 30 minute drive to Letterman according to Google earth. About 915 is quickest they could get to Letterman, without taking into account Immigration and Customs at SFO.

I think that Tonga is just a miscellaneous route info. Teams could be getting the trunks at the Coit Tower and be hoofing it to the Great American Music Hall as per the original speculation.

If the next destination after the hall is the park, then I believe there will be enough time to fit one more task...a geography task would be fitting for this race.  :snicker:

Calestor, I don't think they are going to go from the Tonga room, BACK to Coit Tower, and then back again...

Also we had eyewitness accounts of Brent and Caite leaving Coit Tower...no trunks.

Music Hall is spec...it may just be a place in the vicinity, there are LOTS of theatres near there. But it is pretty non-descript around there.

You could make it to Letterman on a Sunday AM in 30 minutes or under I think...  from SFO.

This had me confused at first until I looked at a map. You're right, Dan/Jordan and Brent/Caite are both taking possible routes to the Great American Music Hall. Since it's southwest of the Tonga Room, you can either head south then west or head west and then south.

Dan and Jordan (west then south) are taking a much better route though. It's pretty much downhill the whole way and it's not particularly busy. Easy walking. Brent and Caite are headed south into the Union Square area. It's much busier with many pedestrians going to stores and shops and tall office buildings. I worked in that area for a year and the sidewalks are always full of people (though the fact that it was a weekend (Sunday?) should lessen the difficulties. Then, once Brent and Caite turn and head west, the neighborhood gets a bit seedy before too many blocks. It's not particularly dangerous, but it could be a bit unnerving at times. There is drug trafficking and prostitution in that general area - more to the south of there though. During the middle of the day I wouldn't expect any problem though. Also the route west along O'Farrell street is uphill all the way. It's not particularly steep, but it is uphill. I'd expect Dan/Jordan's route to be a few minutes faster.

Thanks for the welcome messages :)

I revised my post and I must say I got things wrong. According to everything said in the topic so far, the order is:

SFO -> Coit Tower -> Letterman Digital Arts Center -> Tonga Room -> Great American Music Hall -> Candlestick Park.

It seems the last task will be held in the GAMH (or in the next route marker). It would be nice to have music involved :D

The only place I see that could have hosted the "line cutting" issue is the Coit Tower. I doubt something like this would happen in the airport, specially because they don't shoot anything in customs/private areas. Why would they mention on a promo and not be able to air it?...maybe I got it wrong, again...  :P

We do have a spoiler about Dan and Jordan being moved to business class just before deplaning which enabled them to exit the plane first (which I think shows excellent strategy and someone did some charming of a flight attendent! ). Now...would that be considered cutting in line?? Might more likely be something at Coit Tower.

Once you buy the tickets, though, the airline can move you to any seat, even first class, and you're O.K., no penalty.

They did not buy nor fly Business Class. You can go back and read the spoiler. Apparently, Dan/Jordan sweet talked a flight attendent and just befoe landing, they were moved from coach class up to business class. It seems that they were probably the first people off the plane and through Immigration/Customs to the point of a 30 minute head start to go to Letterman.

Not sure if we have this ... from ET

"...A lot can happen when you're crossing 6 continents.  Let's just hope the finale doesn't send Caite to "the Iraq."

As a geographer, I want to express my protest to ET or whoever originally wrote this in the strongest possible terms:
And a lot more can happen if you are only crossing North America (by plane going south only), South America, Europe, and Asia, which is 4 continents by my count. The air route to Paris or Frankfurt could involve a very minor crossing of the northwest corner of Africa by plane, but that should not count in my estimation. Also, there is clearly no Australia and no Antarctica so 6 continents is impossible.

Yes indeed, Candlestick Park is an iconic sports location:
1. home of my favorite baseball team the San Francisco Giants for 40 years from 1960 until moving to PacBell Park (later rechristened AT&T Park and now SBC Park) in 2000. In 1960, the Giants moved to Candlestick Park  built on a point in San Francisco's southeast corner overlooking San Francisco Bay. The new stadium quickly became known for its strong, swirling winds, cold temperatures, and thick evening fog that made for a formidable experience for brave fans and players. The park had a built-in radiant heating system, but it never worked. In the ninth inning of the 1961 All-Star Game at Candlestick a strong gust of wind appeared to cause Giants relief pitcher Stu Miller to slip off the pitching rubber during his delivery, resulting in a balk  (and a baseball legend that Miller was "blown off the mound"). Candlestick Park was infamous as a place to play, earning without doubt its reputation of being cold, windy, and foggy. In 1963, wind picked up the entire batting cage and dropped it 60 feet (18 m) away on the pitcher’s mound while the New York Mets were taking batting practice. The Giants would award the Croix de Candlestick pin to fans who stayed for the duration of extra-inning night games. All of this gave the Giants a slight pitching edge and fielding edge because they were more used to its foibles than visiting teams.

2. It was also the site of the 10/17/1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake at 504pm PDT  interrupting pre-game ceremonies and postponing the start of the third game1989 Bay Area World Series between the Giants and the Oakland Athletics for 10 days.

3. Candlestick Park  hosted two MLB All-Star Games (1961 and 1984), one National League Division Series  (1997), three National League Championship Series (1971, 1987 and 1989), two World Series (1962 and 1989).

4. Candlestick Park also continues to be the home of the San Francisco 49ers football team since 1971. It has been the site of 6 championship football games, with 4 of them 49ers victories. The most memorable (except to 49er fans) of the 6 was the New York Giants 15-13 victory over the 49ers 1/20/91.

Just a small sidebar to help you young ones with ancient history.  Looking closely again at the picture published earlier in this thread and some of the buildings now making up the Star Wars complex look like the old barracks I lived in while I was stationed at the Persidio in 1946. I was a cinematographer assigned to the Sixth Army headquarters and waiting orders to embark with Admiral Byrd to film his trip to Antarctica and the South Pole.  Some of the film I shot on Operation Highjump was used by MGM in their Academy-award winning documentary "The Secret Land."

I believe you are correct. When the Army shut down the Presidio in the 1990s, much of it became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Other parts were used other purposes including The Lucas Films Letterman Digital Arts Center. The San Francisco area has become a center for movie industry special effects so using the existing buildings for that purpose was a natural fit. I believe that the Letterman Digital Arts Center name comes from the former Letterman Army Hospital which was at the Presidio.

This is an untrue statement. The epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake is at ......Loma Prieta Peak, California, about 70 miles south as the crow flies from Candlestick Park. Candlestick Park is famous that day because Al Michaels was on an open mike talking about the upcoming World Series game when the earthquake occured.

I kept looking at Candlestick to try to figure out how those guys, Bonds, etc are able to hit the baseball into the ocean. Then it dawned on me that ATT Park was built.........lol.......oh well, senility is fun.

The 2nd preview of the finale shows the cowboys really close to finishing the VR task (Jordan is in the way between Jet and the task goal). Dan shouts at Cord when he asks Dan to move Jordan out of Jet's way lol

I'm guessing the cowboys left the VR first (tied in the worst scenario: Jordan could be done and trying to read the Tonga message as he is spinning...)

If the final task really does involve music, that will be a challenge for the cowboys :D

I think there is a misunderstanding here. What kwando is trying to say that it is pointless. E.g. If a team behind yields a team in front, it is voided and doesn't count anymore. Take TAR 12 India leg for example. Kynt and Vixen U-turn Nick and Don who is in front hence it had no effect.

Peach has it right!

That is the Cowboys running to Yoda.  They have just exited their cab.

What bugs me is why did it take them so long to get to the Digital Arts Complex?  I know they had already left SFO by 9:22.

I was thinking that the VR task might just be the "cut in line" deal. If the Cowboys get frustrated waiting on Jordan.......they might see a gap and sneak through and get ahead there. Jet seems to be just waiting for Jordan to move and Jordan doesn't have a clue whitch way to go. He seems to be just blocking Jet to me.

It looks to me like Jordan has reached the "GOAL!" and is trying to read the next clue (about Tonga).  When he finishes, then Jet will be able to move forward and read the clue.

The VR Goal:

Cord can't see that Jordan is in front of Jet.  He only sees Jet and the Goal:

I don't think Jordan is blocking Jet. I think they move within the area and all they movements are show on this game thing. The object is to get to the "Goal" to receive their next clue. So even though It may look like Jordan is blocking jet, I don't think they are in the game.

I thought that the clip from Bonnie revealed a lot.

It looks like the Coit Tower roadblock might be TAR5 redux, with Dan & Jordan playing the roles of Linda & Karen and Jet & Cord playing the roles of Colin & Christie.

Dan is almost to the top when Jet & Cord arrive to the roadblock, and it seems like Dan is out of gas.

This would fall in line with Phil's "back and forth" comment, if the VR game is first and the roadblock is after.

Is there any evidence on the time when teams were spotted at Coit Tower?
Personally I think this looks like the first task since the producers usually don't want many people to see teams in a public place, so put this as first task can avoid most people seeing them, especially when there will be more tourists later.

The first Coit Tweet:

Amazing Race contestants just completed near-final stage by rappelling up San Francisco's Coit Tower! http://twitpic.com/udts2     11:14 AM Dec 20th, 2009  via Echofon

Subsequent tweets identified this team as Brent & Caite.

I'm thinking this was the first task, and the two brother teams had already finished Coit and headed to Letterman.

The one thing that's strange is Brent doing the roadblock when he's already done 6.

What's going on with the rules?  More exceptions?

Humm. Something does not fit.

If the Coit tower is really a roadblock (and it appears to be), why is Brent doing it? He's already hit 6...
Are we sure it is him? Because it could be production crew...
Also, I read earlier about both team mates (Brent and Caite) doing it?

Taking this into account, the VR seems to be a miscellaneous task. I still believe the cowboys are leaving there tied at worst (it really seems like Jordan is trying to read the Tonga message). Since they are not interacting with each other I don't call Jet possible step ahead a cut in line. The promo says "a cut in line cuts into another Team's time", so I also dismiss the seat moving on deplaning as a cut in line (promo mentions Team and not Teams....).

About the timeline, I stick with my previous post (SFO -> Coit -> LDAC -> Tonga -> GAMH -> Candlestick), unless the other tasks were so easy they managed to do everything within 1 hour to be at Coit Tower so early...

And I don't like the sound of this: "but he does believe that the show's fans are rooting for the beloved professional bull riders  to win and that the ending isn't necessarily happy for everyone". Maybe hes just playing with us? :P

I take that as confirmation that there is the customary memory challenge on the final leg. From what we've seen, I'd go with our speculation that the trunks the teams are carrying will contain items used in the memory challenge.

I also doubt Phil actually said, "the final leg will take the teams from Singapore to San Francisco," since that would encompass three legs.

Perhaps Phil said, "Shanghai," and the writer just wrote the wrong city.

TAR13 had the 3 tasks after their memory task.

TAR14 had the unaired task of them looking for a statue after the surfboard roadblock.

It's all up in the air as to when the memory task happens.

I'm thinking something along the lines of like the last season of TARA, where teams have to carry a chest to the finish line, but a chest is pretty heavy, maybe they don't need to carry it all the way?

So does Coit Tower come before Letterman? Because it definitely seems as though the cowboys are definitely trailing throughout the leg, but slowly making up ground. B/C appear to be nonentities at the moment.
Of course, the team which arrives first at the final task has not won in a LONG time... :ascared

oh! so that photo of the brothers is taken at Coit Tower?

confirmation of that being a roadblock would explain how brent and caite would have fallen behind.  since we have eye witness reports that BOTH brent and caite were seen doing this RB, let me guess that B/C DIDN'T keep count of how many RBs each of them has done so far, and Brent gets volunteered to do the climb up (him being tall and lanky would have some advantage in doing it quickly).  HOWEVER, since he has already completed 6 RBs, they are not allowed to open/retrieve the clue after his climb up and Caite has to do the RB instead.....  :lol3:

though I thought that if this were to happen, aren't they supposed to be issued at penalty at the pitstop?

‘Amazing Race’ Host Promises ‘Tense’ Finish
by Associated Press
May 7th, 2010 | 7:10 AM | Comments 0   By DERRIK J. LANG
AP Entertainment Writer

LOS ANGELES — Caite Upton is headed in the right direction on ‘The Amazing Race.’

The former Miss Teen South Carolina, who infamously flubbed a 2007 pageant question involving maps, and her boyfriend, Brent Horne, are among the three remaining teams competing Sunday for the CBS reality series’ $1 million grand prize. The often bickering dating duo experienced a rough start on the around-the-world race but have managed to avoid elimination.

“I think one of the most exciting things is that Brent and Catie are still there in contention, against the odds,” said host Phil Keoghan. “Right from the very beginning, I don’t think the other teams saw them being at the end. Catie has really taken a leadership role and really driven this team. I think she’s really been the dominant factor for their team.”

Upton and Horne are racing against pairs of brothers: Daniel and Jordan Pious, the distinctively different siblings from Barrington, R.I., and Jet and Cord McCoy, the seemingly unstoppable cowboys, from Tupelo, Okla. The McCoys, who came in first place during the last episode, unprecedentedly went from the bottom to top spot on the 16th season’s eighth leg.

“Without a doubt, Jet and Cord have been the cool cucumbers throughout this race,” said Keoghan. “There was only once when they were rattled, in the Seychelles when I had to send them for a map out in the water. Even then, they weren’t really rattled. They went out there and did what they had to do. I think, as cowboys, they’re just used to the pressure.”

After making stops in such countries as Chile, Germany and Malaysia, Keoghan said the final leg will take the teams from Singapore to San Francisco where the racers will have a high-tech encounter at the visual effects company Industrial Light and Magic. They’ll also continue “The Amazing Race” finale tradition of having their memories of the race tested.“The thing about the last leg,” he said, “is we really want to make it as fair as possible for all the teams.”

Keoghan, who was at the finish line when the show was filmed late last year, would not reveal the winner, of course, but he does believe that the show’s fans are rooting for the beloved professional bull riders to win and that the ending isn’t necessarily happy for everyone. Keoghan foreshadowed that Upton and Horne are confronted by another team at the mat.

“This season,” he teased, “we have a very tense finish.”

georgia, is the virtual task the last task? Jet seemed to have an edge over jordan. And jordan was completely shocked.

oh! so that photo of the brothers is taken at Coit Tower?

confirmation of that being a roadblock would explain how brent and caite would have fallen behind.  since we have eye witness reports that BOTH brent and caite were seen doing this RB, let me guess that B/C DIDN'T keep count of how many RBs each of them has done so far, and Brent gets volunteered to do the climb up (him being tall and lanky would have some advantage in doing it quickly).  HOWEVER, since he has already completed 6 RBs, they are not allowed to open/retrieve the clue after his climb up and Caite has to do the RB instead.....  :lol3:

though I thought that if this were to happen, aren't they supposed to be issued at penalty at the pitstop?

anybody else have any thoughts on this?

could be, we've had a lot of race's "firsts", so why not add, "oops, we accidentally went over the RB limit"?

The other times I figured based on the shadows....

Brent on tower is ~11:10
Dan and Jordan carrying trunk ~11:33
Brent and Caite carrying trunk ~12:08

I could be way off, but this could possibly explain why Brent is doing the Road Block:

In Shanghai, when we had two Road Blocks, maybe they didn't count the second one int o the overall tally, because the person was forced to do it.

Is that possible, or do we know that the two Shanghai Leg #1 Road Blocks both count. :duno:

This looks like Brent to me.

Note the shadow of the spotter is close to parallel with the side of Coit.  Perfectly parrallel would be 14 degrees off north, this looks to be 15 to 17 degrees.  From http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/AltAz.php (http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/AltAz.php) for San Francisco on 12/20/09, those angles would be between 11:00 and 11:10.

First column is time
Third is azimuth (E of N) ie 180 is due south which would be 12:08 in SF.
11:00       26.8       162.6
11:05       27.1       163.9
11:10       27.4       165.1

So if the tweets have them finishing shorthly after this time, I doubt Caite climbs it after Brent.  I'm starting to think they both have to climb it and this is what costs them the 45 minutes by the time we see them on the street with the trunk.

or is there a route info we are missing?  The map they are looking at looks like it is of the Presido grounds.  Brent is pointing in an area near the bridge toll rather at the Letterman Digital Arts Center.  Maybe they are lost getting to LDAC or maybe there is a route info up there that sends them to Coit Tower.

Boy what a misleading quote by the writer. I finally figured out that the "not happy for everyone" reference isn't about the Cowboys, but the confrontation Brent-Caite have with both Joe-Heidi and Carol-Brandy; and the possibility that Brent might have violated the six roadblock rule. The fact that Caite is presumably obligated to do the roadblock has been a factor in my mind that they wouldn't win the final leg.

There's always been a question about how Phil would handle a penalty on the final leg, and the way this season has gone, that possibility playing out would fit right in.

2. It was also the site of the 10/17/1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake at 504pm PDT  interrupting pre-game ceremonies and postponing the start of the third game1989 Bay Area World Series between the Giants and the Oakland Athletics for 10 days.

Dr. Rox, it is OK for you to take potshots at me as long as you can take them in return. Where did I say that the epicenter of the Loma Prieta Earthquake was at Candlestick Park? I did not.  It should be clear that I said "site of the 10/17/1989 Loma Eathquake at 504pm PDR interrupting pre-game ceremonies."  You cannot argue with that, as it is unquestionably true. Where the epicenter was was of no interest to me (although I would expect from the name attached to the event after-the-fact that it was in Loma Prieta).

Do we actually have a quote from the rules that state each member of a team must do an equal number of roadblock tasks?

And if Caite has to do the climb after Brent comes down who tells him it does not count and that Caite must also do it to count?  From a picture in the Washington Post today it shows Dan grabbing the clue envelope which is hanging on a wire at the top of the climb.  And would this be considered a penalty (as asked in mswood's ep 12 quiz)?

I like this season because it has been much less predictable. More obscure clues, the return of the intersection and the introduction of two roadblocks for starters.

im probably wrong on this, but these are the best guesses i have as to what the tasks are:
Letterman Digital Arts Center: Detour- both Dan and Jordan and Jet and Cord are seen doing it. We know it can't be a roadblock because Jet(walker) and Brent(commander) both already have done six roadblocks so if only one position counted as a roadblock at least one team would be over the limit.
Coit Tower: Route Info- brent is doing this and he already did 6 roadblocks. if this is a roadblock then catie definitely failed in her mission.
Tonga Room: Roadblock- it's the task we know least about and pretty much the only one that fits.

The pictures released show the cowboys holding a blue paper (Route Info) while walking towards the Letterman Digital Arts Center. We can also see Dan opening a red clue (Roadblock) at the Coit tower.

I also think that Caite had to do it because of the Roadblock limit. Perhaps this is the reason why Brent was so mad at the cab ride in the preview...and for a team trying so much to prove intelligence that's not a very bright move...

After seeing this, the highlight of Brent/Caite keep making mistakes may suggest that they will make mistakes again in the final leg.

But if the hit the 6-roadblock rule is broken, I guess there should be some sort of penalty instead of just let another teammate to finish it? Anyway, they may let them continue the race first and give the penalty in the end.

I guess in this case forcing Caite to do the roadblock would be a more severe penalty than a standard time-based one. I'm sure it would take her more than 30 mins to do it. And a huge time penalty would just spoil all their presence in the finale...

One thing I'm wondering is: Do we know (or is it possible to know) the time when the cowboys were seen near GAMH?

I never seen such thing before nor read it anywhere, so I don't know what is the exact penalty. But 30mins would be a 'help' for B/C, and 4 hours would be too much and it would surely ruin the finale for B/C. Forcing Caite to do it just seem to be the best option here. To be sure: Isn't the 4 hours penalty for skipped/forfeited tasks?

The crew could have changed the clue envelope after finding out that Brent was doing it....they should be prepared to everything, specially in the last leg :P

Four hours is for not completing a roadblock, like the meat-eating one from TAR7.

Twenty-Four hours is for not completing a detour, like Nancy & Emily.

The show probably has a formula for other time penalties.

The reason why I said 4 hours was because if you just make it 30 minutes, then it is theoretical that one team can have an imbalance throughout the race and still survive. 2 hours seems more likely though (we've seen that penalty before)

Yes, I'm aware of the 4-hour penalty for not completing roadblocks (Flight Time and Big Easy for example). I meant I never seen or read about penalties for exceeding the roadblock count. It could be a 4-hour penalty too, or it could be forcing the team mate to do it.

I just think a big time penalty in the last leg doesn't make much sense for the show, as it would kill any viewer's (and team mates') expectations for the team to win.

It's a four hour penalty for failing to complete a roadblock. We don't know what the exact penalty is for violating the six-roadblock penalty because it hasn't happened since it was instituted for season six. (And there have been variations in seasons with 13 roadblocks, and for the Family Edition.) It's also possible there is an exception of some sort because of the two-roadblock leg.)

The other thing to note is that Cord also has to do the roadblock because Jet did his 6th roadblock last week; Dan and Jordan have 5 each because of the fast forward.

I'm trying to figure out the order of the tasks by thinking of them as parts of an episode, with ~44 minutes minus the commercials.

The CBS twitvid looks like the first 3 minutes of tomorrow's finale.  You add the credits and you're already 4 minutes done.

In TAR14 and TAR15 it took ~3-4 minutes, after the first commercial break ended, for them to arrive in End City.

The sequence of seeing Phil staring out at the Finish Line and the eliminated teams beginning to clap until the credits come up takes up ~5 minutes.

There's ~30 minutes of time left for the tasks and taxi/foot travel to fill.

Going way back to TAR 1 in the first Paris Leg. Dave & Margaretta incurred a penalty because they both performed the roadblock together. Phil told them they could have avoided the penalty if only one of them re-did the task. So it's probable that Caite had to re-do the Roadblock to avoid incurring a penalty. Though we haven't heard the Roadblock limit rule for a while, haven't we? ???

I still think Coit Tower is the first task, not the last, unless all the other tasks took less than 2 hours to complete (memory task included)

Hmm..... but didn't Phil say that the clip they showed of the 2 set of brothers climbing Coit tower was their last task? This also implies that D/J and J/C are basically neck & neck toward the pitstop!

Yup. Dan and Jordan are in the lead for the last task.

Actually, Phil did not know which clip they were gonna air. The production lady says "final challenge", and Phil only says "it was really good".

I may be going really far with this, but hey look at Dan's hair in the picture. It looks much more sweaty and messed up in the Letterman task still than in the Coit Tower promo photo. He looks like he had had some exercise already :D
Unless he cleaned himself up between tasks he could not look neat in the Coit Tower if it was the last task...

Not sure if these particular photos have been shared.....

CBS posted them on TwitPic (http://twitpic.com/1lw7hb)

This shot was taken here

It was taken between 10:37 and 10:46 am (assumes December 20th).

Second photo above is near the spot of the cowboys outside LDAC where Chateau estimated 10:37 to 10:46... I estimate B&C here at 10-10:20AM but I'm eyeballing the shadow angle to get this.

Chateau or anyone else, can you double check this?  Reference points for Caite is tree to lamp post, for Brent two trees on far side of Letterman drive small leaning tree and the sign across the parking lot...

This would put Coite after LDAC?

:idgit.... Could they have put a speed bump at the Tonga room sending all teams to Coit first?

Could Catie and Brent be so far behind that when they arrived at Coit Tower the Cowboys and Dan/Jordan had crossed the finish line aldreay.

So TPTB asked Catie to repeal after Brent to act as decoys?

That would go along with the tweet about both Catie and Brent doing that task.

I think the rule about each team member having to complete 6 RB's went out the window several seasons ago.

It was only explicitly mentioned in TAR 6, but I believe it's still retained. Otherwise, why has not one team broken down the rule.
I also believe the Globetrotters mentioned it sometime last season.

Looks like Coit Tower -> LDAC -> Tonga -> Music Hall -> Candlestick Park, with a memory task sometime during or after music hall.

Based on the posts, tweet times, sunlight estimations and google earth travel times:

  • 08:45 AM Plane Landed.
  • 09:00 AM Frantic couples with backbacks running thru SFO followed by film crew. Great Race contestants? (Brothers?)
  • 09:15 AM Just went through customs on San Francisco, standing in line with two guys from Amazing Race and their camera crew. (Cowboys?)
  • 09:22 AM Cowboys(?) leave SFO.
  • 09:30 AM Brothers(?) arrive at Coit Tower.
  • 09:50 AM Cowboys(?) arrive at Coit Tower.
  • 10:15 AM Brothers(?) leave Coit Tower.
  • 10:25 AM Storm Troopers are escorting 'Amazing Race' contestants through the Letterman Digital Arts Center. (Brothers?)
  • 10:27-46 AM Cowboys(?) leave Coit Tower.
  • 10:37-46 AM Cowboys arrive at LDAC.
  • 11:14 AM Amazing Race contestants just completed near-final stage by rappelling up San Francisco's Coit Tower! (Models)
  • 11:58 AM The Amazing Race contestants scaled the tower then hopped in a SF cab, but I didn't see which team it was. (Models)

According to Google Earth:
  • 27 Mins from SFO to Coit Tower.
  • 10 Mins from Coit Tower to LDAC.

Any thoughts?

It's been 15 years since I lived in the San Francisco area, but I'd be surprised if you could get from SFO to Coit Tower or Coit Tower to LDAC as fast as those given times. There tends to be traffic jams on I-280 coming in from SFO (probably 15-20 miles) and once you leave the freeway, you have to deal with stoplights on city streets getting to Coit Tower. It's the same from Coit Tower from LDAC. Frequent stoplights with a 30 mph or so speed limit would make getting there in 10 minutes difficult. However, since they were there on a weekend, that would help. If I had to guess, I'd say 35-40 minutes from SFO to Coit and 15-20 minutes from Coit to LDAC.

It might actually be faster to take the subway from the airport to downtown SF and get a cab to Coit Tower, but since I never rode the subway to the airport (the section going to the airport opened after I left the area), I don't know if it would work or not. I wouldn't expect any of the teams to know that and it would be a big risk on the final leg. Now that I think about it, the subways run less often on weekends.

The tweets are mostly consistent and it indicates Dan/Jordan having a 10-15 minute shrinking lead over Jet/Cord as they head to the Tonga Room. Brent and Caite took about 2 hours from the time they left the airport until they finished Coit Tower? Ouch.  :ascared  Much faster than I would of done it though.

Yes, the Globetrotters mentioned this at the dreaded Kafka Road Block. They chose Big Easy to do it, becuase they wanted Flight Time to do the last one. Shame they didn't know the last one was rappelling... :umn:

Teams have still referenced it between the show, clips and interviews after the fact.  For example in All Stars Eric brought it up a couple times in trying to get Danielle to agree to do RB's (she didn't) thus putting that team in a position were Danielle was forced to do the last two.  Eric was upset because one that he tried to get her to do was passive (just sump), and the next leg was a compass task that he knew how to use and Danielle never learned.  This was either in clips or the episodes.

And logically in this season in France at one RB Jordan talks about how Dan has already done a certain number of Roadblocks and he had done two less, so no matter what the task was he knew he had to do it.  Well the only logical reason he had to do it is because teams must share a certain number of roadblocks.

How do we know if that person is reliable? Did he back it up with evidence or an explanation of this result? To me that's still speculation unless it's proven otherwise.

That spoiler from Buddy TV is wrong because he first wrote Catie and Brent's name as the team that wins. We know it is between the cowboys and the other brothers so I say he doesn't know who wins and is just guessing like we all seem to be doing.

Congratulations, Eric & Danielle.

You are no longer the worst performing winning team.

Your average placement of 3.6153 doesn't look that bad compared to Dan & Jordan's record-shattering 4.3333.

Eric & Danielle only won 1 leg compared to Dan & Jordan's 2 wins, but they still performed better by ~0.718.

Wow!

So much for that.  Who said Brent could not do the Roadblock?  Or that after he did it Caite would also have to climb the tower.  And we had a spoiler who claimed that both Caite and Brent climbed Coit Tower.  False.  If there is a rule that says that Roadblocks have to be done equally by the team members, I would like some one to quote chapter and verse (not on spec.)  And if there is a fast and true rule that RBs have to be done equally, then rules can be broken just as the rule about you must be 21 to compete was waived so that Caite could participate.  Special rules for this team? Dam. cost me points!

Wow! I didn't expect Dan and Jordan to win, seeing that the spoiler said they had a 30-minute lead over the other teams and from what we have seen the past seasons, the leading team always gets surpassed and end up not winning. This must be one of the rare times if not the first that a team led the entire leg! Wow! And I guess Jordan's love for the race enabled them to finish the final task extra quickly and propelled them to the win. Awesome job for them!

Great job to Jet and Cord and Brent and Caite too. Although I was rooting for the former a little more to win it, Dan and Jordan winning are fine. Yay! :D

This season hasn't been all that wonderful for me, but it ended alright. I'm now looking forward to the next season! Hopefully it's a more interesting cast. Fewer all-male teams please! Hee.

Since I was OOT, I missed some stuff at the time:

Interesting to read this in hindsight though.

The Amazing Race

Phil Keoghan Analyzes The Amazing Race‘s Final Three TeamsMay 9, 2010
Phil Keoghan, host of The Amazing Race, spoke to PEOPLE and broke down the pros and cons of the final three teams before the show’s finale Sunday night. Watch a sneak peek of the episode. Tune in to CBS (8 p.m. EST) to find out which set of world travelers will master motion capture at Lucas Films, reach Keoghan’s mat first and take home the $1 million prize in San Francisco, this season’s final destination. –Carrie Bell

The Cowboys: Jet and Cord McCoy
Strengths: Family ties are an asset and these brothers “with tremendous eye-hand coordination work extremely well together,” according to Keoghan. He also says they’re “the coolest team under pressure that we’ve ever had. The closest they ever got to losing their cool was in Seychelles when they forgot the map and even then I saw only a hint of frustration.” Maybe because this isn’t the professional bullriders first time at the rodeo. “They’re used to the limelight, high-level competition and performing under pressure,” Keoghan says.

Weaknesses: Keoghan is concerned that very same coolness might cost them first place. “They’re very even and nice and may not be able to amp it up to guarantee a win,” he says. “At this point, you have to get cutthroat and have a win-at-any-cost mentality. I don’t know if they have it in them to push past another team to take the only taxi. The slightest hesitation will cost you.” Their trademark wide-eyed awe may also cost them time. “It’s one of the things that viewers have really identified with, but if they stop to smell the coffee for too long, someone else will drink it.”

The Model Couple: Brent Horne and Caite Upton
Strengths: Keoghan, like most of the contestants and viewers, never pictured this dating duo in the finale because of their “opposite personalities, frequent bickering and [numerous] silly errors they made early on where they missed the little details,” he says. And of course there’s that infamous beauty pageant blunder that made her look like an airhead. “[The other teams] judged her on that and figured she wouldn’t be able to hack the Race,” he continues. “But Caite’s determination to prove herself is the reason they’re still in it. Ultimately she led that team with a do-or-die mentality. She would push past anybody to get to the finish line first. She’s made it very clear that she will do whatever it takes.”
Weaknesses: They’re the only unrelated pair left and they’ve known each other the least amount of time. “There’s an entirely different dynamic in boyfriend-girlfriend teams and they’re different people,” Keoghan explains. “Brent’s quite laid back and doesn’t like to be pushed too much. When he is, he tends to back down, give up and quit. Their different headspaces could become an issue.” Speaking of bad habits, she’s still the girl who froze and “lost the plot on national TV when the pressure was on,” he continues. “The stress of the final leg could trigger that same deer-in-headlights reaction.”

The Brothers: Dan and Jordan Pious:
Strengths: They’ve also got the brotherly bond working for them. It’s been Jordan’s dream to tryout for the Race and while Dan was never a big fan, he “has a tremendous amount of desire to help Jordan with his quest to win,” Keoghan says. “That determination to support his little brother and their close-knit relationship has allowed them to work well together and forced them to push themselves.”
Weaknesses: While this tough team deserves to be final three, Keoghan worries their emotions or tempers will get the best of them. “When the pressure’s on or things stop going their way, Jordan gets very emotional and then Dan has to spend time taking care of him,” he explains. “That’s where their game falls apart, although I admire how good of a job he’s done picking him up off the floor and moving him along. But an outburst could cost them precious minutes. Their tempers, as we saw in the taxi last episode, flare up under pressure and they get rattled.”

For those that are interested - here is a collage of files provided by CBS with the exif date to put them in order.
Looks like Jet and Cord weren't that far ahead of Brent and Caite...

Hope this link works - its a large file...

Anyway to make this readable?? When I enlarge it, it blurs out...  And did CBS provide the exif data? ???  Way cool!
They came from CBS "indirectly"  :-X
I'll post them in 3 parts:

Thanks WalkingPneumonia!

Question: Why are Jet/Cord running to the finish line at 1.08pm and Daniel/Jordan at the club at 1.11pm?

I was wondering that myself - I think CBS messed with the EXIF data to throw us off - the first batch shows stuff out of order as well.
If you believed the photos - Jet and Cord won!

I have surmised that most of those times are one hour off.  If you subtract an hour, leaving the few that don't seem to fit, they will all fit together.

For example, Dan & Jordan doing the memory challenge should be 12:11 not 13:11.

I like my theory that CBS is conspiring against me better  :browsie:, but you're probably right. Maybe there were 2 cameras - one that was off by an hour.

ORRRR... Jet/Cord finished first but received an unaired penalty that allowed Dan/Jordan to win??!?!!
ORRRRRRRR... They brought the Yield back and put it right in front of the Finish Line but Jet/Cord accidentally Yielded themselves??? O. M. G.

Let's see how far we can drag this rumor out.  :snicker:

The finale didn't show Brent and Catie completing every task, maybe they had to go back and do it but the producers knew everyone had would have already counted them out by then, so they didn't show it.

I'm starting to think the puzzle Roadblock didn't count for the limit because they didn't have a choice of which racer would perform it

As of choices, they didn't choose, but they performed it, that is what should be taken into account.

Could this be blatant favoritism? ???

Another thing: I've heard rumors that a team gets paid not for placement but how "interesting" they are. Is this true?

I saw somewhere that the winner earned 1,000,000 $, the second placer, 25,000, then 15,000, 6,000, 5,000, 4,500, 4,000 and the last one earning 1,500.

Don't know if that is really true...

I haven't been on this thread for over a week, so I have no idea of whether someone has already posted this. If so, forgive me in advance. I want all those who say that the ROADBLOCKs have to be evenly split or the ROADBLOCK count cannot go above 6 in a 12 leg season to note that Brent performed 7 ROADBLOCKS in AR!6.

Caite stated in an interview that they were allowed to either split the RB's 6-6 or 7-5. Some probable explanations, IMO, are:

1. Brent & Caite broke the 6 RB limit rule, but since they were third the producers didn't bother to penalize them
2. Since on the two-roadblock leg they didn't have a choice of who would perform the second one either that didn't count for the limit or the limit was lifted by one to give them an opportunity to choose.
3. The rules changed

I don’t want to start rumor or conspiracy but something doesn’t look right in the last leg of the Amazing Race 16. The problem is in the United flight from Shanghai to San Francisco. There is no way, the brothers can talked a flight attendants to allow them to be in business class (not first class as commented by the winners). I fly United all the time between San Francisco and Shanghai – the plane is the Boeing 777. The first class seats are lay flat 180 degrees version and they were not those in the show. They were clearly in the business class section. I was on the same flight they were on. I am a high level United mileage member and I was on standby for an upgrade from economy to business (which I did not get). The only way United would hold 3 business class seats without putting revenue customers in them is someone buying the business class tickets (3 of them since the camera man also went up to business class section). United never leave the business seats empty when there are revenue customers and upgrade standby customers. The brothers were not an upgrade since the they moved from economy to business right before the landing during final approach into San Francisco. All of the other team members are up when they moved so they did not sneak into business class while they were asleep. The ability to exit the plane first is what gave them the lead and ultimately won the race. So did CBS purchased the business class tickets?

Wow.
At the very least you have a basis for a complaint against United... :meow:
Is it possible the brothers talked 4 people into switching seats from business class to economy for the end of the flight. (4 people - 2 brothers, 1 camera and 1 sound guy - I think they always travel in pairs.)
The seats were at the back of business class - aren't they sometimes reserved for crew on long flights?

Airport -> Coit Tower -> Letterman -> Tonga -> Trunk Place -> Candlestick Park seems to be the likely order. If they throw in a memory task, it should be at Hunter's Point (which is adjacent to Candlestick Park).

Do we know when the flight from Shanghai landed? We could then trace the teams' movement from there.

EDIT: Airport -> Letterman -> Tonga -> Coit Tower -> Trunk Place -> Candlestick Park now seems more likely.

Caelestor, UA858 from Shanghai to SFO landed 20 minutes behind schedule on 12/20/09 at 845am. I realize that 2 weeks later this information may not be significant to most and that someone may have already posted it.

Ray from TAR 7 just posted this at sucks:

Quote
In season 7 Deana and I worked on a flight attendant for much of the early part of a flight, complimenting her and flirting as well.  We then made up a bogus issue about our tv not working properly and used that in our argument to get moved up to first class.  This was a long transcontinental flight from South America to South Africa.  Although we did not mention the Race or a million dollars, they had to take note when we told them our camera and sound man had to be provided seats as well or we couldnt make that move.  Once the camera crew started filming us enjoying the benefits of traveling in first class, the flight crew realized something of significance was happening.  The co-pilot came out and we struck up a conversation with him - still not telling him why we were traveling with a camera crew.  He agreed to lead us out of the plane first, before ANY passengers, and he walked us down as we opened and read our next clue.  It involved a Fast Forward and he was able to give us directions to get there first.  We won two vehicles on that leg by accomplishing the fast forward (crossing cooling towers) first.  Our negotiations got us great food and comfort on that flight, and an invaluable contact that gave us his cell phone number, and even agreed to meet us in the middle of the next night so we could follow him to our next roadblock.  Finally I called him on the way to the airport from that roadblock, and even had him book our next tickets for us while we were on the road.  I am still in touch with this co-pilot today!  This was an agressive but effective move that paid off hugely for us.  We did it all within the restrictions of our race.

The flight crew typically dont sit in the business class section. In the last episode, you clearly see the 2 brothers sitting together in business class seats. I must have missed it but I only saw a single camera crew per team. Regardless of how the 2 brothers was able to move from economy (at the back) to business class (first to exit); This is a GREAT move if they arranged it themselves. But it sounds fishy to me...
