Work in progress! Will be updated as we know more.

Pictures are thumbnails, click-click to enlarge. Items in red can be clicked for further info.

HUGE thanks to our insider local and to swoonist and to Slowhatch for the original swoonist blog find!!

Teams remain in Shanghai following a 12 hour Pitstop.

PitStart: Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
(http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb140/ga--peach/TAR%2016/Shanghai/th_TAR16ep10ShanghaiScienceandTechMuse.jpg) (http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb140/ga--peach/TAR%2016/Shanghai/TAR16ep10ShanghaiScienceandTechMuse.jpg)

Teams should be released in the order of their arrival:
Cowboys, Models, Brothers, and then Cops.

Teams travel by taxi to the Route Marker:

Long Hua Temple (http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/shanghai/longhua.htm)

Longhua Temple (Chinese: 龙华寺; pinyin: Lónghúa Sì, literally "Lustre of the Dragon Temple") is a Buddhist Temple dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha located in Shanghai, China. Although most of the present-day buildings date from later reconstructions, the temple preserves the architectural design of a Song Dynasty monastery of the Buddhist Chan sect. It is the largest, most authentic and complete ancient temple complex in the city of Shanghai.

SpeedBump: "Coin Toss"

(pure spec here, inspired by memories of TAR 2 and Dan's recent game video:}
Would be fun if we saw something like this?

Teams were originally supposed to travel by taxi to the "High Fashion" Roadblock, which I suspect has been transformed into the "Fashion" Route Marker scheduled for episode 10.
In any case, it was originally located in Tian Zi Fang     (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/c54d4/f4fc8/)

Tian Zi Fang Photo Album (http://travel.webshots.com/album/573297853KizUUk?start=12)

SPEC: Since our scheduled RB was transferred to episode 10,  there could be some possibility that the Route Marker scheduled for ep 10 could have been transformed into a RB here?? (spec)
ep 10 scheduled ROUTE MARKER: in Lu Zia Zui Park (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/29842809) in Pudong

Lujiazui Central Green is located in Pudong district in Shanghai. The Greens are situated at the entrance of a Tunnel where you could come across a group of huge steel structures named ‘Spring” which resembles eight flowers in full bloom. This is the largest space which has been opened up by the Shanghai Government. Some of the evergreen grass has been imported.

Lujiazui Central Green covers an area of approximately 100,000 sq metres out of which 65,000 sq meters are covered of an evergreen turf. The shape pathway resembles the city flower of Shanghai, Magnolia. The center of the Lujiazui Central Green features a man made lake which covers an area of 8600 square meters. The lake resembles a map of the Pudong new area. There is a fountain in the centre of the lake that can spray water columns as high as 80 meters. There is a white scenic canopy on the banks of the lake which resembles both a conch and a shell.

The green land is surrounded by clusters of high buildings which are like a new International Architecture Expo. Towards the south of the Lujiazui Central Green is the Lujiazui development Exhibition Room which showcases special architectures and combines Chinese and Western culture. It also reveals the past present and future of Lujiazui. The park is open from 6AM till 10PM.

This location may include something to do with Cadillac Escalades?? assemble toy cars?? Cliimbing?? product placement?? Not clear... possibly originally scheduled for Da Ning Park  (http://wikimapia.org/1857152/DANING-LINGSHI-PARK-%E5%A4%A7%E5%AE%81%E7%81%B5%E7%9F%B3%E5%85%AC%E5%9B%AD)instead.

Teams were originally scheduled to then travel by taxi to the
Detour Decision Point located at the Bridge of Nine Turns in the Yu Yuan Gardens:

(http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb140/ga--peach/TAR%2016/Shanghai/th_TAR16ep11Bridgeofnineturns.jpg) (http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb140/ga--peach/TAR%2016/Shanghai/TAR16ep11Bridgeofnineturns.jpg)

the walled Yuyuan Garden, still retaining the feel of traditional China, is an ancient park of rock formations, pavilions, towers, and man-made lotus ponds designed by a Ming dynasty family. The zigzag Bridge of Nine Turnings, one of the most well-known sights in Shanghai, crosses an artificial lake to Huxingtang, a beautiful little pavilion that holds a classic Chinese-style tea house. In and around the garden, you will find excellent snack food stalls

Teams travel by foot to either
Detour A: Pork Chops or Detour B: Pork Dumplings
Whether this is Eating? Selling? Cooking? is unknown.

Teams then travel by taxi to the Riverside Promenade and search on foot for the PitStop for this leg.

We were very fortunate that Slowhatch found a wonderful blog written by swoonist, who is currently working, living, and studying in Shanghai.

She wrote (in the process of showing a friend around Shanghai):

Quote
We spent one day doing the touristy things of Shanghai.  We went over to Lujiazui to see the Pearl Tower and to go up the Shanghai World Financial Center building - currently the third tallest building in the world (according to wiki).  It’s the one that many of us think looks like a ‘bottle-opener’. After wandering about Lujiazui for a bit and grabbing a late lunch at Din Tai Fung, we eventually made it to the Riverside Promenade so that we could get a look across the river to the Bund on the Puxi side. We are standing around in the freezing cold, next to the freezing cold river when THE MOST AMAZING THING HAPPENED!

A few people run past us. The first thing that runs through my mind was, “oh no, they’re trying to steal my purse!” And then we saw the camera crew. Second thought that runs through my mind, “ITS THE AMAZING RACE!” Well, that was my theory at least.  I’ve always thought it would be pretty cool if I came across the Amazing Race during my time abroad. Michelle and I start running after them and ask them what they were filming for and the guy answers with the two coolest words, “Amazing Race.”

OH. MY. GOODNESS. At this point I couldn’t believe what was happening before my eyes. Ultimately, we found the pit stop for this leg of the race and waited around long enough to:

    1.    see two teams check in. Including the last team to arrive. I have no idea whether it was a non-elimination leg or not though
    2.    see one of the world’s tallest men. He’s a Chinese man and quite tall. Though I heard soon after that he just recently lost his title to someone else. He needed walking canes to help him stand though.
    3.    see the production crew of The Amazing Race.
    4.    see Phil, the host.
    5.    say “hi, I love this show” and get a photo with Phil.

The crew in charge of keeping the area clear of bystanders was nice enough to let Michi and I stand around. I believe they let us because they could tell we weren’t locals from our American accents and probably figured we could do no harm. Truth is, some Chinese locals will treat you differently once they know you’re a foreigner ... even if we are ethnically Chinese.

After that cold, amazing experience, Michi and I headed across the Huangpu River back to Puxi where we grabbed some dinner and took a walk down Nanjing Road. It’s just a shopping street but at night it’s all lit up and you can people watch. Weather: still cold
.

You can read much more about her experiences here:

credit for all of this goes to swoonist, with a big :ty from all of us.

The Pit Stop was on the Pudong side of the river (Lujiazui) along the Riverside Promenade. The exact location was the area that is directly in front of the Starbucks and Shangri-la Hotel. I saw them on Saturday, December 19 around 6pm-8pm (China time). The tall Chinese guy was the greeter.

Thanks to slowhatch, here's an Interactive map link with the starbucks (http://sh.edushi.com/?oid=14355)

She was incredibly fortunate in being able to obtain some photographs, and has shared those with us!! :hearts: I have lightened and brightened them a bit so we can see better...

Quote
The first was taken in between the second to the last team and the last team to arrive. And the rest were pictures of Phil talking to the last team to arrive.  All photos were taken after the second to last team had already checked in and left the area.  My friend and I ran up to the area just as the second to last team were hugging each other and speaking to Phil.

The last team then arrived:

The exif data for the first photo reads 12/19/09 at 18:55:40

From swoonist:
Quote
I dont have many pictures to show because they initially refused to let us take photos. ........  So I was only able to get pictures of the last team to the Pit Stop.  In the photos, you will see the Chinese greeter (in full costume), Phil, and the male/male team that I think is Louie and Michael (tall and short males).  The photo was taken just before the last team arrived and after they had "checked-in" and Phil has that short conversation with them.

originally posted here: http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,21253.msg509067.html#msg509067

Swoonist was also able to confirm the next to last team as Dan and Jordan.
Quote
The last 2 teams to check in were both male/male teams. Judging from the CBS website of the cast, I would say that the second to the last team was Daniel and Jordan and the last team was Louie and Michael. The second to the last team to check in were male/male and they weren't wearing cowboy hats (my assumption is that the cowboy team wears their hats throughout the race? I have no idea, haha). This second to the last team actually ran past my friend and me, but they ran in the wrong direction because a few minutes later they doubled back in the direction of the Pit Stop. The last team to check in was a tall male and a shorter male. They arrived at the Pit Stop almost 2 hours after the team before them. It seemed like Phil talked to the last team for quite awhile.

The arrival order was later confirmed by our local insider as Cowboys, Models, Brothers, and then sadly, Michael and Loiue eliminated.

Cowboys apparently arrived about 2 hours ahead of the Cops.

Misc leg info:

Here is our greeter:  Bao Xishun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bao_Xishun) (thanks to graytex!)

(http://i48.[banned image hosting site].com/1yagd2.jpg)
Quote
While they were waiting for the team to arrive, Phil would help hold up the protective covering to keep the Chinese greeter warm. Since the Pit Stop was right next to the river and it was a really cold winter night, there were a few helpers who would help cover the greeter (probably not in perfect health due to his large body frame) from the cold.

The buildings behind them are part of a group of buildings known as  "The Bund" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bund) in Shanghai.  They are located on the Puxi (Western) side of the Huangpu River.  So the brightly lit buildings you see are across the river.  There should be information about them on wikipedia. The Pit Stop was on the Pudong (Eastern) side of the Huangpu River in the Lujiazui area (where the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center and Super Brand Mall are).

Possible building behind from slowhatch:
I see something here (http://sh.edushi.com/?oid=15696), across the river from the starbucks; it has a similar shape, but the name translates only as "new bund building."

It's south of the Mcbain building. Look at the building with the cupolas next to the Attica (http://wikimapia.org/3482950/Attica) nightclub.

I wondered if it could be:
Russo-Chinese Bank Building (No. 15, The Bund) is now the Shanghai Foreign Exchange.

Here's the English (http://www.icexpat.com/nm_AddressDetails;mid_EXP0eq22949.shtml) and translated Chinese (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.91office.cn%2Foffdetail9720.htm&sl=zh-CN&tl=en) version (click the thumbnail to enlarge). It's not big enough to be listed with Emporis, but I found a streetview (http://sh.city8.com/panosearch-pid3254380_F8KD-ptz218_19_90-ctps-sn_city8.html) for you. And here's (http://www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotos-g308272-d803728-Starbucks-Shanghai.html#19445576) a shot of the Starbucks taken from the ShangriLa hotel.

Judging from the title, I think we're in for another series of language butchering in this ep.

I think uycocoa was referring to the title...like how Jaime and Cara were complaining how no one understood them and how they struggled with the language barrier.

The title suggests a situation like when a team does not know the place, they ask some local to give direction to their taxi driver but still they end up getting lost.

The title reminds me of Rebecca's test of the language barrier to a taxi driver ("He has 3 testicles!!" [To Adam])

I wouldn't be surprised by any of the four teams saying it, but I'm going to guess Dan & Jordan for the title quote because they were the ones who criticized the people of France for not speaking English to their liking.

I'm thinking the ROUTE MARKER: in Lu Zia Zui Park in Pudong scheduled for episode 10 could turn into our RB for episode 11....

From the episode preview, it looks like Brent & Caite and Dan & Jordan will assume the roles of the Ugly Americans for TAR16.

After seeing the picture of her pulling her eyes back like Miley Cyrus and the Spanish basketball team, I'm not surprised by Caite mocking the way people speak English in Shanghai.

The context in which Dan spazzes out and throws a temper tantrum should be interesting.

From the preview, it looks like the taxi that they're following is already running a red light.  I guess that their driver doesn't want to risk running a red light, which makes Dan throw a tantrum, tell Jordan that they're getting out of their taxi, and talk about committing physical violence.

I'm interested to see in what context the "stupid" comment is made.  The tantrum itself looks ugly enough, however, if it's not that bad but Dan & Jordan start hurling insults at locals, even taxi drivers, then they will definitely be in my short list of Ugliest American teams in TAR history.

I was wondering WHY it was so important to follow that taxi? If it just a matter of keeping up with another team, that might be an over reaction. But suppose it was something like TAR 2's "follow that plane" ?? ???

I don't have access to episode 10 right now.  Did Dan & Jordan tell their taxi driver to follow Louie & Michael's taxi after the fashion task?

Following other teams could just be what they do.

I wouldn't expect a non-Mandarin speaking team to be able to remember where to go in Shanghai if they ended up pulling a Tara & Wil.  I think they would be DOA if that happened.

Okay, I've been dead wrong for quite a long time, so I'm pretty careful with what I say here. Maybe we're taking it totally out of context. I'm thinking that Dan is totally stressed as a result of doing a task, which has put them again at the back of the pack, and as a result, he acts out the stress on the taxi driver??

I think Brent says the title.

My guess is that someone is speaking Mandarin or Cantonese and the listener speaks the other language.  Shanghi is primarily a Cantonese city as opposed to Beijing which speaks mostly Mandarin.  Although most people tend to be able to speak and understand both to some degree, there are still a large number of residents who only speak one or the the other.

Leg 1's order originally included

Noodles RB>>

Travel by taxi to "Escalade Build" at PuDong (changed from Da Ning Park)

Then travel by motorcycle sidecar (changed to subway} to Stadium.

We saw none of that in leg 1, so my guess is that this has been transposed to a leg 2 task, perhaps the RB??

If you'll take a look at post #2 in this thread it is all there.

And no, Golden Buddhas is supposed to be a Route Marker, "Coin Toss" is the SpeedBump, again...take a look at the summary in post #2.

I will work on the screen caps as soon as I can, just got home, thanks for the video chills!!

It looks like Dan & Jordan are going to freak out more than the first preview indicated.

I wonder why Dan ends up almost wrapping himself around the taxi driver's shield.  I can't believe that he would actually try to hit him.

It looks very interesting.

The Golden Buddhas are here, as should be the SpeedBump:

Jordan/Dan checked in in daylight, and now they're leaving in daylight. Sunset in Shanghai is 4:54 PM on Dec 18. It looks like we've got an extended Pit Stop - definitely less than 24 hours as Mike/Louie are racing in daylight also, but probably in the 14-18 hour range (For reference, sunrise on the 19th was 6:48 AM).

eta: Dan gets the location of the clue for the stadium RB at 3:05 PM. Add 40 minutes (generously) for running through the stadium and going to the museum, they check in around 3:45. So I'm thinking we've got a 15-16 hour pit stop.

OK, got it.  I was going by the original spoiler which by now has been pretty much discredited, and mysteriously deleted.  I was wondering where all the "escalade" and "coin toss" spoilers were coming from, now I know, secret sources.

And for the record, Coin Toss will not be a Switchback, since it was a Fast Forward in Season One, not a Speed Bump.

All four final teams were spotted in San Francisco.  So one of these teams must be the decoy team. We have been assuming that it was the cops, but perhaps it was instead Dan and Jordan.  The latest cbs promo has Michael and Louie saying "will be eliminated" after the voice over says "Four teams, one..."  Is this misdirection on CBS part?  A local source said that Dan and Jordan were spotted coming out of customs 30 minutes ahead of the others.  This doesn't make sense since the producers have always held everyone up in customs/immigration so that they start off evenly matched.  Unless the team coming out far ahead of the others is a decoy team which has been sent out ahead.

Just speculation since it is not clear by the source which of the two male/male teams was actually seen coming in last at the Shanghai pit stop.

And what about the stamp task.  Any idea where that fits?

TRUE

No. The Cops were spotted in the airport clearly hanging around with production. They ARE our decoys.

Quote
This doesn't make sense since the producers have always held everyone up in customs/immigration so that they start off evenly matched.
I have recently discussed this very question with former final three racers. Apparently, NONE of them were ever held up on the final leg to start them evenly matched. I specifically asked about delays due to camera hold ups clearing customs or whatever...but according to the people I asked, there were no "bunching delays" at custons on the final leg. If your camera guys had trouble...too bad.

Quote

We have two totally separate sources who happened to both be at the Pitstop mat in Shanghai leg 2. Both of them have independently confirmed that Mike and Louie were eliminated there. We have photo/exif data supporting that as well.
There WAS initial confusion from one source as to which pair of brothers came in next to last...the Cowboys or the Brothers. That team was hatless, and was later positively identified as Dan and Jordan.

And what about the stamp task.  Any idea where that fits?

It could be postage stamps; another possibility is the name stamps called chops (http://jackiechankids.com/files/Chop.htm).

so its the cowboys??? OH MY GRAVY??

Seeing that Phil said that... "Oh, my gravy" and what he said about just when we think we have it all worked out... I'm guessing an unexpected team wins. Oh my, not Brent and Caite please! Geez.

Oh, my gravy is not part of Phil's quote.  It's part of the TV Guide writers text.

I think the "Oh my gravy" thing is an allusion to something surprising happening since the cowboys are the near-overwhelming favorites for winning.
Oh my god I suddenly want the finale already! I pray these last two legs beat last season's!

Shesh... Shanghai is more than 600 miles from Beijing. Jamie and Cara were not THAT lost.

I think uycocoa was referring to the title...like how Jaime and Cara were complaining how no one understood them and how they struggled with the language barrier.
Only Jaime did.  Not Cara.

I finally had the time to download and re-watch episode 10.

Dan & Jordan do tell their taxi driver "That cab.  That cab.  Follow that car." after the fashion task.  It comes right after Louie & Michael make their "crackhead" comment.

Following other teams must be their style.

Unless a team is caught in a shakedown like Andre & Damon, I've always found it to be unacceptable to berate taxi drivers.  I don't care if it's a Tara & Wil situation, "killer fatigue," etc.

There have been plenty of teams in do-or-die situations that have kept their composure this far into the race.

It's easy for you to say about Dan since you never got to race. I totally understand how Dan feels. The communication barrier in China was so incredibly difficult for my mom and I. Esp. when it comes down to do it or die battle for a berth in the Final Three after coming this sooooo far. Nobody wants to be eliminated right before the Final Three showdown. There were times where I want to strangle cab drivers in China for not understanding where we need to go esp. when we were searching for U-Turn for 2 hours! And, not forget about lack of sleep and food... I'm sure Dan didn't intend to blow up on his cab driver. It's just such a crucial time to not make a single mistake of going in the Final Three.

Poor Dan :(

When I was younger we had a 8 week choir tour through Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and China.  We were bused and shuttled, dealt (to a much smaller degree) jet lag, lack of sleep, hunger, and by the end of that 8 weeks every single one of us were showing the worst side of our behavior.  And this is with far, far less stress then what the race puts on racers (and the stress racers put upon themselves).

Now if this outburst is typical behavior from Dan, then I wouldn't want anything to do with him.  But if this is a one time explosion he has (and so far we have seen no evidence of Dan having a temper, really at all), then its unfortunate, my sympathies to the local and hopefully Dan feels bad for his behavior (as we all should when we over react, and I doubt there are many of us who can say we never have).

Luke, I always compare situations like Dan & Jordan's to Kevin & Drew racing Joe & Bill for the last final-3 spot in Beijing.

As guests in China, even under such extreme stress, Joe & Bill made the effort to make sure that their taxi driver understood where they wanted to go, by having guidebooks and a Chinese-English dictionary, and telling him that they wanted to go to the "South Gate" in Mandarin.

Kevin & Drew weren't happy that their taxi driver let Joe & Bill get ahead of them in the race to the Pit-stop, but they never showed them berating him.

In the clip, Dan & Jordan criticized their taxi driver for not understanding "follow" and they yelled at him for not running a red light.

Expecting someone in another country to understand English, and to break the law for you, is the epitome of Ugly Americanism.

I can't speak for luke, but I don't think anyone is going to argue that it is ugly behavior.  My point is that, one instance doesn't reflect how a person normally behaves.  We have had racers who yell at locals (or demean them all the time.  That personally bothers me a lot more, then what so far as been a single instance.

After going through every season with a fine tooth comb, I don't think there has been a racer (to make it near the end) who hasn't at one point of another lost their temper.  Be it with a local, a service personell, with fellow racers, or with their team mate.

I mean look at Danny & Oswald two racers who are considered extremely friendly to locals, they have insulted cab drivers, told them they can't speak their own language and threatened to kill one.  All in one leg.  Was it ****ty behavior, of course it was.  But was that instance something that really reflected how they normally treat others?

I'm certain the first Louie/Michael cap is outside the entrance to the Science & Technology Museum. Either Dan/Jordan weren't very far ahead (ie they checked in right before sunset), or there's an initial task/taxi drama that slows Dan/Jordan down.

I don't think any of us who haven't run the race have ANY idea how tough it really is. While I would hope I would be upbeat and appreciative, I know that I would be sure to have my moments of frustration and impatience..

I certainly am not going to disparage a racer who has been repeatedly supportive of his partner, and positive in his outlook, for one brief moment in the whole race. Especially when that racer has made no bones about the fact that he doesn't travel well. I give him great credit for all the good moments instead!

I think the editors needed some drama this week...and one taxi meltdown is all they have.

Making a statement that people (the ones they have encountered) don't speak good english here isn't offense, or ugly behavior.  Its just a statement.  Making a statement expecting people to speak your language is.  Or complaining about how people don't speak or understand your english is ugly.  But just pointing out that people's english isn't good, isn't.

I mean when I have had people from other countries with me in the US and they have stated that my command of their language isn't that great.  It's just a statement.  They didn't mean it as I should speak their language better.

And that is the heart of that type of issue.

If you think Dan and Jordan's intent in that scene was that people should speak better english then its ugly behavior (and we have had many, many racers over the years make comments about people needing to speak English).  But if its dan and Jordan just talking about someone's ability without them having the expectation of them speaking perfect english, then there is nothing wrong with it.

Well it all depends people watch the show for many varied reasons.  And I am not a big fan of Louie & Mike.  But I do like that they work well together, that they so far have always treated each other with respect.  And while they have manipulated others, they are allowed.  We haven't seen them in general being rude to locals or service personnel.  Their worst behavior is being cocky in about 4 episodes, and using Brent & Caite and Carol & Brandy's feud to engineer their being seen as a target instead of themselves (which is actually fairly smart).  Besides that we haven't seen any other bad behavior in their day to day relations to other racers.  Even with Joe & Heidi they were civil.

Some interesting timings from the exif data from CBS's photos...
All times are from the camera, which is set to -05:00, I haven't corrected the times to local time...
Caite is counting statues at the roadblock around 19:13
Caite is still counting at 20:48
Jet and Cord arrive at the statue counting roadblock at 21:02 - somehow Brent and Caite had an almost 2hr advantage, yet they finish counting at the same time as Jet and Cord!
Jet and Cord get on the motorcycle at 21:23. It only took 21 minutes for Jet to complete the roadblock!
Jet and Cord at the Pork Chops at 21:46
Caite and Brent on the mc at 21:56 - why are they 10min behind? Did Caite take time to pee?
Jet and Cord at the Pork Cops at 22:23 and 22:24
And yet - Caite and Brent are running to the pitstop at 23:25

It seems to me that the camera might be set to -8:00 (Pacific Standard Time).

Shanghai is +8:00, so if the camera is -5:00 19:13 becomes 08:13, which is supposedly before they left the pitstop, I believe.

If the camera is -8:00 then 19:13 is 11:13, which seems closer.
