Okay, incoming:
From one of the Sentosa posters:
*I did not realise that they were filming the amazing race until the 2nd sighting, therfore no pictures were taken.
I was at the singapore flyer at about 11am, 16 dec 2009, when i saw the 1st group, male/female team(young couple, long hair girl dressed in blue).
As the flyer was closed for shooting until 12.30pm, my family and i proceeded to sentosa's underwater world, where we spotted the 2nd group, male/male group (middle aged man, dressed in blue too.) wondering around Rasa Sentosa Hotel car park at abt 1pm, same day.

Natalie Blog:
Found a girl that saw amazing race filming at the megazip/Sentosa (http://www.sentosa.com.sg/explore_sentosa/attractions/mega_zip.html).
*Natalie: okay i think.. there's this two guys with cowboy hats? n a couple team?(indians?) didnt hang around there very long... sorry!
Blog (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/175e8/84b/4/?o=2):

*While I would consider riding the Singapore Flyer, the world's tallest Ferris Wheel, to be one of the must-dos in Singapore, the night we went it was amazingly uncrowded -- in fact, we came very close to getting a tube of our own. My friends and I got there around 6:30, an arrival perfectly timed for sunset, which happens quickly this close to the equator. We navigated the maze of shops and ramps to the entrance and we hopped onto the slow-moving wheel without it even stopping. Soon we were out of the housing and getting great views of Singapore and beyond. Het, we could even see Malaysia and Indonesia -- a tri-nation view! We got great looks at the skyline and harbor as the sun dropped behind the tall buildings. We got a great perspective on the ongoing construction of the world's largest casino complex and on Singapore's floating soccer field. Additionally, we could see an unending line of ships at anchor, waiting for their turn to enter busy Singapore Harbor. All in all, the ride took just a hair over 30 minutes and regaled us the entire time, all for about $20.
If we had wanted to splurge, for $199 we could have gotten a tube that came with a full-service dinner on nice linens and fine china, with champagne. In fact, n the tube behind us, we could see two young girls were being filmed doing just that. Since we envisioned that the dinner would be an occassion for romance and dinner, and the girls were rather shoddily-dressed, we were trying to come up with scenarios for what was going on. Was it a reality TV show? It turns out we were close -- a Hong Kong Travel show was filming its Singapore adventure

*Found this blurb on a blog. Not sure if it helps. Maybe it will help put the timeline together.
Lunch at Subway! And guess what? We saw teams of Amazing race running around Sentosa. That was so cool! Watch out for the next season... Sentosa might be the pit stop for a leg of the race!

Amazing Race TAR 16
by Yirene
I need to exclaim first, I was so shocked when I saw my blog readership yesterday and then I realised it was because I merely mentioned about amazing race in one of my sentences. So to all the amazing race fans out there…
Ok guys, I hoped I got this right. I just received a FB message from this nice lady call Peach and she said that you guys want to know more about the race in Singapore. Honestly, I am not very sure whether the people I saw were from Amazing Race but just in case they were, let me fill you in with some details.
WHO: 2 males in blue shirts and blue backpacks
WHERE: Marina Barrage
WHEN: 16 December, about 130pm or so.
My friend, Fiona also mentioned that she saw another couple in red running in some time after.
That’s about all that I know! Yeap, and I am terribly sorry cos’ I was more interested in the filming crew than the contestants themselves! I don’t know why! HAHA. But I’ve attached some pictures, so take a look if you are interested! (:

Alright, this article was taken from "THE NEW PAPER" (Singapore's "alternative" newspaper) and the issue is dated Friday, 18th December 2009. Just a quick heads up before I dive in into the article proper, there really isn't much new information inside the article and it seemed like the person who wrote it took most of it directly off RFF, in fact.  :groan: But nonetheless, I'm posting it up here hoping it would be of some help to the investigation here.

so since i can't really get a proper clear picture, i'll just type it out and highlight (in bold) the more-interesting/important points within

Is Amazing Race back in S'pore?  (http://a1preview.asia1.com.sg:90/vgn-ext-templating/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=30881f5db71a5210VgnVCM100000430a0a0aRCRD&vgnextchannel=f6dbadbd2b722110VgnVCM100000bd0a0a0aRCRD)
Film crew spotted at S'pore Flyer and Bugis

IS THE Amazing Race making a pitstop in Singapore again?

A US film crew was spotted at the Singapore Flyer and Bugis on Wednesday. And it looked like they were laying the groundwork and preparing for the impending arrival of contestants as the signature red and yellow striped envelope which participants need to find was seen by someone who posted it on the Net.
But contestants were nowhere to be seen.
Now into its 16th instalment, the US reality TV game show first came to our shores in 2002 during its third season.
According to Ms Nicole Lee, 30, who works at Singapore Flyer's Japanese restaurant Hibiki, the tourist attraction was strangely quiet on Wednesday morning. Curious, Ms Lee asked the receptionist, who confirmed that The Amazing Race had indeed been filming there in the morning.
She told The New Paper: "When I arrived for work at about 11:30am, I saw a helicopter hovering above us, which is unusual."
Singapore Flyer's marketing communications manager June Leong confirmed that it had been hired for filming a commercial TV production", but did not specify which one.

Later that afternoon, the crew moved on to Bugis where they were seen filming with an ice-cream street vendor.
Miss Stephanie Tang was on the way back to her office at Parkview Square after lunch at Albert Centre when she spotted them.
Being a fan of the series, Miss Tang immediately recognised the signature red and yellow stripped envelope. So she snapped a photo and posted it on Twitter.
The 23-year-old marketing communications executive told The New Paper: "They were at The Bencoolen at about 1pm.
"The film crew asked an ice-cream vendor to hold on to a red and yellow envelope. I didn't spot any contestants around."
Back in 2002, we saw The Amazing Race teams wandering through the National Orchid Garden, swimming across a manatee enclosure at the Singapore Zoo and getting wet in Suntec City's Fountain of Wealth. They also navigated maze-like HDB corridors in Choa Chu Kang, after which actor Gurmit Singh - playing Phua Chu Kang - handed them clues.
Finally, actress and former Miss Singapore Universe Jaime Teo greeted them at the Mount Faber pitstop.
As for this season, it seems filming of the race started at the Los Angeles International Airport. While details have not been released, Entertainment Weekly reported that rumoured contestants Jordan Lloyd and her boyfriend Jeff Schroeder were spotted at the airport in competition attire late last month.
Lloyd is US reality TV show Big Brother 11's winner and Schroeder was a fellow participant.
The film crew and contestants have also been spotted in South America's Puerto Varas and San Carlos de Bariloche, according to Spanish news websites.

Plaidmoon:
*Good work, Dragoondaniel! I saw a reference to a story being in TNP which I was guessing was The New Paper but I couldn't find it on their web site.
I did find this thread at  sgforums.com  (http://politics.sgforums.com/forums/8/topics/385258?page=1).
It has a few tidbits and bears watching.
I was at T3 yesterday night at this breadshop nxt to where the bus "stop" is, then there was this AETOS security guard, and two ang moh pple surfing the free internet on the com at that bread shop(forgot the name)...
so weird, initially i tot A Race, but as i dun watch the show i dunnoe the contestons~

*and
at b.batok. blk 334 under the void deck there got mama shop there will be the pit stop.
There's also some speculation about meeting "PCK" or "LKY and familee" or "the prata man". I assume these are local celebrities and are pure speculation.

*There are reports of the production crew and contestants being sighted around Bukit Batok/Jurong, Bugis, Marina Barrage, Singapore Flyer and Sentosa a couple of days back.

I'm pretty sure anyone who read Coutzy's post will know that he meant it to be in sarcasm, meaning JeJo should have been the one who said it (for apparent reasons) but they were eliminated.

I'm not surprised something like that would happen with this cast.

I agree with Rob & Trevor when they said that Mark & Bill and Toni & Dallas would love to have been on this cast.

Neobie,

I must apologize. After years of relative congruency between your transportation work and mine, this is the 3rd instance of huge major differences in the past 24 hours.  The timetable I have cited has the heading Bangkok ►  Penang ►  Kuala Lumpur ► Singapore and I used the Penang (actually Butterworth since State Railways of Thailand trains do not actually cross to  the bridge into Penang center. I have discovered that my interpretation of the schedules in that was not correct.

The website which was the source for my timetables is http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm#Singapore

I concur that your 0700 to 2130 14.5 hour trip from Butterworth to Singapore is valid for Malaysian Railways.

Apskip, I'm looking at the time table you reference (http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm#Singapore) and I still don't see any way to get from Butterworth to Singapore in less than 13h45m.

PS, here's the info from your link:

Daily Train 9 leaves Butterworth at 23:30 this train arrives KL at 06:40, then train 5 leaves KL at 08:25 (1 hr 45 min layover) and arrives Singapore at 15:00.  Total time = 15 hr 30 min.

Daily Train 1 leaves Butterworth at 07:45 and arrives Singapore 21:30.  Total time = 13 hr 45 min (no layover in KL).

Saturdays and Sundays, Train 3 leaves Butterworth 10:00 and arrives KL 17:30 then Train 11 (daily) leaves KL at 22:30 (a 5 hr layover!) and arrives Singapore 08:20.  Total time = 22 hr 20 min.

After years of relative congruency between your transportation work and mine, this is the 3rd instance of huge major differences in the past 24 hours? What is going on? The timetable I have cited has the heading Bangkok ►  Penang ►  Kuala Lumpur ► Singapore and I used the Penang (actually Butterworth since State Railways of thailand trains do not actually cross to  the bridge into Penang center. My number are correct per that timetable. If you don't like an official State Railways of Thailand timetable, feel free to disregard it.

I do not know who is right, but I am using a documented source for my timetables (I don't make these up out of thin air):

http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm#Singapore

Please look it up yourself. It shows that State Railways of Thailand has the timetables I displayed. I concur that your 0700 to 2130 14.5 hour trip from Butterworth to Singapore is valid for Malaysian Railways.

My Asia rail travel experience of 3 weeks in India, 11 days in China and 10 days in Taiwan has taught me that there are average trains which go under 40 mph and there are fast trains which do 80 miles per hour. I suspect that your Malaysian Railways timetables are valid, but who sensitive to time constraints would want to go on that  train? I sure wouldn't for an Amazing Race although I would consider it for a major price differential.

Apskip, you are reading the right timetable (with minor variations from the official Malaysian Railways schedule), but you are looking at the wrong row. The times that you are quoting (trains leaving at 8.25am, 2.00pm and 10.30pm) are for trains leaving from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, which is why the times you get are drastically shorter. There is no faster train than the direct.

The official Malaysian Railways timetable is here (http://www.ktmb.com.my/images/default/TrainInformation.pdf), if you would like to confirm the timings.

I recognize your 5 weeks of travel experience in China, Taiwan and India, but please understand that I live in Singapore and have made the trip to and from Penang three times in the past two years, by train, bus and plane.

Perhaps why we're disagreeing is because one of us is starting to pay attention to what the other one is saying! :waves:

It would be great to see how dumbness can cause a team's elimination..... IN SINGAPORE!!!

I don't think there's anything magical about Singapore there. Think of all the past Amazing Race seasons and the dumb things that got people eliminated. How many of them were in Singapore? The answer is zero, since the elimination of John Vito and Jill on Mt. Faber does not count because it was poor navigation and not dumbness. However, Joab, fear not because I can think of two dumb things in Singapore in ARA1 and ARA2:

1. Allowing Rovilson to do the final flag ROADBLOCK when Marc could have done it much quicker (ARA2- finale). This got them a last-place-in the final-3 episode finish, 3rd overall in ARA2 (thanks methylc for the correction).
2. The Amazing Race - Universe blunder of blunders by Michael McKay in having the car-washing task as the only reason for a visit to Singapore (ARA1- ep.7). This did not get him eliminated, but only because he's the producer of Amazing Race Asia and cannot be eliminated.

I think Joab's excited about this team's elimination because it will happen in Singapore, his home land, a country that has been severely left out of recent TAR routes.

DON'T TAKE THE BUS DOWN. Reason: The Causeway. Causeway jams are horrible. Joab might know what I'm talking about.

Solution: the Second Link. Buses, especially those taking the Lebuhraya from Penang, have not been using the Causeway since... 1998, I think.

Joab might know what I'm talking about. :hugs:

1. Allowing Roberson to do the final flag ROADBLOCK when Marc could have done it much quicker (ARA2- finale). This got them eliminated.

Marc already hit his roadblock count of 6 before reaching the final leg, so it wasn't dumb...

Nope it was still kinda dumb, because throughout the entire race both of them took turns alternatively to take Roadblocks without thinking who's a better person doing it. It so happened that Marc started off first... and the Tokyo Roadblock already showed how mentally-challenged he was...

And they didn't get eliminated. It was the final leg, and they just ended up in 3rd... which was their worst placing throughout the race. But it was a good way to drag them down.

Carol and Brandy are driving by Istana Park... if I remember correctly, is along Orchard Road. Where Dan & Jordan are at is the Singapore Flyer, second largest and longest Ferris Wheel in the world. If Jordan is the one I see (can't tell them really apart), he's going to be doing major peeing in his pants.

It's still along Orchard Road, it's bounded by Orchard Road, Penang Road, Penang Lane,  Buyong Road. They just passed by it, I've no idea what they might be doing there (they're in a taxi)

The Singapore Flyer is still the largest in the world, I think. Although Singaporeans will definitely have a snicker when they see people climbing outside the Flyer... Remember this? (Inside joke...)

This looks interesting...

Quote
The centrepiece of the park is the 26 metre high Festival Arch rising out of a shallow reflecting pool. The design of the stainless steel and concrete structure was inspired by the gateposts and railings at the Istana's entrance. The Festival Arch forms the gateway to Singapore's Civic District, the cultural and historic heart of the city. The arch enhances the visual link across Orchard Road.

The park has a large shallow reflecting pool, the first of its kind in Singapore. Coconut palms at the adjoining Palm Pools reinforces the impression of the Istana Park as a tropical oasis in the heart of Orchard Road.

Fronting the main gate of the Istana, the park provides a vantage point for visitors keen to view the monthly changing of guards’ ceremony at the Istana entrance. In the evenings, the park is transformed into an "oasis of light". The park is one of the venues identified for enhanced lighting under the Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) lighting master plan.

Musical and cultural performances at the Istana Park are featured on the first Sunday of every month.

There is a restaurant called Giraffe Restaurant at Istana Park which is available to all for dining. Everyone can also participate/join in the concerts and performances held.

I cant help but think the reason that Carol and Brandy are so mad is not that they have just been U-turned, but that Brent an Katie should have U-turned someone else. Like the cowboys.

Hence why the Dumb comment.  I am guessing that the Cowboys were behind them both and if Carol and Brandy were there first they would have U-turned the stronger team.

The Singapore Flyer might be the Fast Forward.  Or were other teams spotted there as well?

There's the patented "Fast Forward" speculation that I was waiting for!

It really looks like something that could be a FF, or would be a FF in earlier races.  Unfortunately, it'll probably end up being something else (stupid Speed Bumps! No SB in this leg, obviously, but just the fact that the SB have more or less wiped out the FFs or decent FFs)

As Evan mentioned, we'll probably have to wait for another promo to confirm.  It could be a roadblock.  However, I personally would put this as a FF before a RB.  IMO it's completely unnecessary to have both people get prepared for a task, and then choose who'll do the RB before reading the clue.  Where's the excitement in that?  Plus, if there's going to be a Fast Forward, now would be the time to have it.  Don't think this TAR will have the rare appearance of a FF with 4 teams left (and in the same leg as the final Philimination).

Other than that, in the event that it's neither (a RB or a FF), I think it's a Detour as well.  Or just a task that everyone has to do.  Wonder what the other choice is if it is a detour, but A detour would make sense with a U-Turn that would force someone to have to do both of these difficult tasks (which would lead to their demise since no team has ever survived from a U-Turn since its debut).

Flights from Penang to Singapore

OK, Peach. I made the assumption that only the nonstop flights from Penang to Singapore need to be considered. Your point mandates that connecting flights through Kuala Lumpur also be considered. There are 4 basic flight combinations leaving Penang from 0640 to 0725 and arriving Singapore between 0930 and 1025:

MH1133 0640 0735 connecting to 3K684 0850 actual 0952 or MH9131 0855 actual 0945

GF6227/MH1137 0710 0805 connecting to 3K684 0850 0952 or MH9131 0855 0945

MH9881 0715 0815 connecting to either of the flights on the prior line

CX720 0725 0825 connecting to MI7415/MH611 0925 actual 1015

Obviously apskip, there's everything magical about Singapore. You won't know until you're living here for the past 20 years of your life. It's just like i won't know how magical your parents are unless i know what they've done for you if i were your sibling. Like duh.

U-Turn and a "Venomous Reaction" - two of my favourite things!
A SEASON-LONG FEUD CULMINATES WITH A U-TURN AND A VENOMOUS REACTION IN SINGAPORE, ON "THE AMAZING RACE," SUNDAY, APRIL 11 ON THE CBS TELEVISION NETWORK

"Dumb Did Us In" (Singapore) - Tempers and tensions flare when Racers place a target on one Team's back, and feuds come to a head when a U-turn comes into play, on THE AMAZING RACE, Sunday, April 11 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  Phil Keoghan is host.
Title: Re: TAR16 - EP 9: "Dumb did us in" (Singapore)
Post by: Mister RC on April 05, 2010, 01:44:13 PM
Well, that takes care of that!  As for a FF and a U-Turn on the same leg?  Hasn't happened.  There also has yet to be a Speed Bump and a FF on the same leg.  It would be pretty interesting to see how that would play out if it came up.  FTR, during the Yield era, there has only been one leg in the entire series that featured both a Yield and a FF.  Of course, it was a NEL (and IIRC, a FF that none of these teams would claim without a second thought.  Except for maybe Jet/Cord and Michael/Louie).

However, they tend not to put a FF on those legs since it would either make the SB irrelevant or that someone is U-Turning someone for nothing.  Though if there was a FF, I think it would come up early enough that teams would have an idea who took it (as well as the unlucky team that went to the site, hoping for the eventual people to bail, only for said team to complete it).

As for Brent & Caite, I think they may have stolen their cab AND U-Turned Carol/Brandy.  Something that has B/C sneaking past C/B would definitely set them off.
Title: Re: TAR16 - EP 9: "Dumb did us in" (Singapore)
Post by: Neobie on April 05, 2010, 04:39:01 PM
We've got a lot of locations, now our task is to match them to tasks...

Singapore Flyer
Assuming that the Brent/Caite shot is of them heading into the city from the airport, the teams arrive by plane in daylight. The first direct flight from Penang arrives at 10.45am, while a connection through Kuala Lumpur can get teams into Singapore an hour earlier, by 9.45am. Leasing the Singapore Flyer is a costly deal, and we know that the wheel was closed to the public only until 12.30pm, with little room for extension. With such a limited range of time, expect the climb at the Flyer to be one of the first tasks.
The same issue of limited time means the Flyer is unlikely to be part of a Detour, lest a team that is U-Turned drag the use of the Flyer into later in the afternoon. Multiple teams are seen there, suggesting this is not a Fast Forward. The likely possibilities: mandatory route marker task, or Roadblock.

Istana Park
The scenes of Carol/Brandy fuming are shot here, suggesting that this is at the end of a Detour, where the U-Turn is posted. I can think of very little options for task in the park, though, which means we would have to find the actual Detour options elsewhere.

Bugis
As far as we know at this moment, the ice cream task is geographically closest to Istana Park (1.4km/0.9mi). This lends credence to the theory that Bugis is one side of the Detour.

Sentosa
Sentosa would indicate very poor planning if it were the other side of the Detour, especially with a U-Turn in effect. U-Turns have always had Detour options within close range of each other, the furthest being the La Paz band/bicycle Detour. There are sightings of them on Imbiah (Subway, Mega-Zip) and on the west end (Rasa Sentosa Hotel parking lot), but the furthest we can conclude thus far is Sentosa is unlikely to host the Detour.

Marina Barrage
Closed later in the day, scenic views, no tasks that can really be done there... You can probably guess what this one is for.

I think we are still missing one location for the opposite side of the Detour... Unless the Flyer is indeed the other side?

Here are some statistics for the world's biggest Giant Observation Wheels (ferris wheels is a term not really applicable any more): London Eye, the Great Dubai Wheel(to open 2010), the Singapore Flyer, the Beijing Great Observation Wheel(opened 2009), the Giant Orlando Wheel(opening 2010), the Giant Berlin wheel (opened 2009 and Star of Nanchang (opened 2006) are the biggest. Here are summary comparisons:

By Height:
1) Great Beijing Wheel - 208 metres (682 feet)
2) Great Berlin Wheel - 185 metres (606ft)
3) The Singapore Flyer - 165m (541ft)
4) Star of Nanchang - 160m (525ft)
5) London Eye - 135m (443ft)
6) Great Orlando Wheel - 122m (400ft)

By Capacity:
1) Great Beijing Wheel - 1,920 passengers
2) Great Berlin Wheel - 1,500 passengers
3) Great Orlando Wheel - 960 passengers
4) London Eye - 800 passengers
5) The Singapore Flyer - 784 passengers
6) Star of Nanchang - 480 passengers

London Eye
The height of the London Eye is 135m
There are 32 10-tonne capsules
You can see around 40KM (25 miles) from the top as far as Windsor Castle on a clear day
The London Eye welcomes an average of 3.5 million customers every year
The circumference of the wheel is 424m (1.392ft)
The spindle weighs 330 metric tonnes (716,000 pounds), the wheel and capsules total 2100 tonnes (4.41 million pounds weight)

The Great Dubai Wheel will be one of the major attractions at Dubailand. The 185m wheel will be taller than the London Eye. Visitors will be able to view distances up to 50 km from the comfort of one of 30 capsules.

Singapore Flyer
Capsule size: Each capsule is 4 metres x 7 metres – about the size of a city bus. There are 28 capsules. Each capsule can carry up to 28 passengers.
Speed it travels: 0.24m per second, or 0.76km/h.
Total capacity per revolution: 784 passengers.
Rotation: Each rotation is about 32 minutes.
View Radius: 45 kilometres.
For reference purposes, in Amazing Race Asia 1 ep. 11, teams had a task at the Etisalat - Eye of the Emirates (Shrajah, United Arab Emirates) has  450,000 annual riders in its 42 cabins. It is 60m high.

The Great Observation Wheel, Beijing Chaoyang Park wheel(628 ft)will surpass both the London Eye (443 ft) and Dubai's Great Wheel(607 ft).

Great Orlando Wheel will open in 2010. Its height is 400 feet (122 meters) above the earth. A 25-mile (40 km) viewing range is possible. There will be 24 of these fully enclosed, rotating air-conditioned, glass capsules affixed to the Wheel’s outer rim.
Measuring approximately 38 x 16 feet; each capsule will carry up to 40 passengers, for a total of 960. It moves so slowly (nine inches per second) that guests will enter and exit without the wheel having to stop during the 30 minute ride.

Great Berlin Wheel
175 Meters high (some sources say 185 m), 28 km view, 40 passengers/capsule, 30 minute ride, Capable of carrying 1,920 passengers in 48 capsules
the part in German - Kapselabmessung    4,70 Meter x 11,60 Meter (dimensions of capsule)
Geschwindigkeit    0.25 Meter pro Sekunde (rotation speed)
Umdrehungsdauer    30 Minuten (ride length in time)
Gewicht einer Kapsel    18 Tonnen (weight of each capsule)
160 metres (525 feet), carries up to 480 people in sixty enclosed climate-controlled gondolas for eight passengers.
Gewicht des Rades    ca. 6.500 Tonnen (weight of entire structure 14.3 million pounds)

Star of Nanchang

Quoting from the all-reliable Wikipedia here :snicker:, but the opening of the Beijing Great Wheel has been delayed to later this year and construction of the Great Berlin Wheel has been stalled due to financial difficulties...

Which means the Singapore Flyer remains, for now, the largest observation wheel (in height) in the world.

Sounds like Louie & Michael using another team to U-turn Carol & Brandy. Or it could just be the general dislike that Brent & Caite have for them.

I don't remember if it was on the episode or in the extra clips but Louie & Michael claimed they "trained" Brent & Caite to U-Turn Carol & Brandy

It's more then a general dislike, I bet if Brent could push the lesbian aunties onto PIE he probably would (would there be a penalty for that?)

I like the sound of the Singapore leg so far. No more car washing, visiting Phua Chu Kang or what..

Instead we're having a U-TURN, the biggest observation wheel in the world, the view at Marina Barrage of the entire city view of Singapore is superb and some very local traditional tasks.

This sounds like a good redemption for the really bad Singapore legs we had thus far.

Speculation:

If there's a U=Turn involved as to Carol-Brandy and Brent-Caite, it may be that the Cowboys were already ahead.  I have the impression that Singapore may be like Penang for the "Boys in the hats.

Agreed!!
U-turn the Cowboys is the smartest choice, but Jet & Cord won't give you that opportunity..

Actually, we might not know if they were ahead. Besides, IT'S BRENT AND CAITE!!! I doubt they're smart enough to figure that the cowboys are the best choice (strategically) for the U-Turn. Also, they agreed w/ the cops that they would use the U-Turn on Carol/Brandy when given the chance

We don't even know that there is a U-turn. Practically all of this is speculation.

According to the press release, this episode does have a U-Turn

Anyway, if this isn't true I think the U-Turn will be Shanghai 1. But I freaking BEG for the U Turn to be in this leg because seriously, I can't wait to see Carol and Brandy so pissed at something Brent and Caite will do!

I'm pretty sure there is a U-turn this leg. I mean, it all fits:

Carol and Brandy get U-turned and get Philiminated as we know the next leg is an NEL.
Brent and Caite u-turn them out of spite.

How can they get Philiminated and be a NEL or do you mean the leg after this one is an NEL???

Going by geographical distance alone, it looks like the Detour will be Cold Treats or Hot Beats? (I'm sure you guys can come up with a better name...) The U-Turn at Istana Park is located somewhat between the two options. It's 1.7km/1.0mi from one, and 2.6km/1.6mi from the other. Neither is exactly walking distance, but pretty close in any case.

Singaporeans should know the location pretty well, it's been all over the news! (Ten years ago, at least...) Hint: "OB marker."

Is it possible to have a fast forward on the same leg as a U-Turn?
because Dan & Jordan are the only ones seen on the Singapore Eye thing and they arent shown doing anything else in the clips (like zip lining or the other tasks)
maybe they draw a fast forward here and jet their way to final 3/the win

The Flyer is definitely a f/f task (if the u-turn is indeed at istana park)

Louie & Mike are near a bus station where only SBS buses ply (red bus sign, other Singaporeans can u please help me read the bus sign and come back to me and I'll find the location?)

Jet & Cord are doing some lion dance drums, perhaps the other half of the detour?

The ice-cream task is in the Queen Street vicinity.

We have lots of tasks here:

Zipline... mega Zip in Sentosa...

Selling ice cream:: Michael and Louie and by spoilers Carol and Brandy

Carrying things?? We see Mike and Louie doing this in a plaza marked Queen? Where does this fit in??

U-turn clue  in Istana Park?

And something at the Marine place?? >>we only see one team member doing this although they are both suited up... >>RB??

And two teams drumming, the Cowboys and Brent/Caite>>Detour or route clue??

Pitstop at the Barrage by spoilers.... we think.

And then we show ONE  team doing ONE task at the flyer...both active so not a RB.... Not too hard to draw a conclusion is it??

i believe so, and it seems to me that the detectives are early, normally queen st/bencoolen link area wont have so much people in the morning, the peak period of the day is about 10am, so accessing the timing, i guess will be before 10am

10 years ago?? the only place i could think of is the speakers corner

I just opened a wikipedia page of The Amazing Race 16, and I was surprised when wikipedia, which I think is not accidentally update the team's position on the leg 9, I think wikipedia's can be updated by anyone, but I believe also that what they write is true, and they already know your position on leg 9 tomorrow.

unfortunately I do not understand how to insert screenshoot these pages, one is willing to tell me?

Here's the position!
Dan and Jordan: Finished first on this leg, by Fast Forward!
Jet and Cord: Finished second on this leg
Brent and Caite: Finished third on this leg
Louie and Michael: Finished fourth on this leg
Carol and Brandy: ELIMINATED! (U-turned by Brent and Caite!)

Dumb did us in
, Michael for the title!

Let us see next Sunday! :)

Here's my predictions on the tasks:

Detour: the Lion Dance drum things / selling ice cream

RB: that mine place where Brent is

Additional task: zipline

FF: scale the Singapore Flyer

U-Turn: Istana Park (according to everyone else)

Oh my gosh! I saw that too.

For the title thing, maybe it's because it was Brent and Caite and not Louie/Mike who U-Turned Carol/Brandy. Needless to say they beat them to the opportunity, hence the title.

Sidenote: I wonder who did that.

I think this leg will redeem Singapore for it's previous disaster (S3 if I am right). Don't get me wrong I love Singapore...I actually am dying to visit the place again. Anyway, I shall keep my eyes open for a lion dance, ziplining, and the SINGAPORE FLYER!!! Gosh, judging from the promo this is gonna be one heck of a leg.

As one of my favorite TV shows once quoted: THE NOOSE IS TIGHTENING!!

For the Road Block, it looks like Brent is counting links in the chain.

And when you see Mike and Louie selling ice cream, the white box Louie was carrying can be seen on the ground near the cart.  And it looks like Michael is carrying the umbrella.

off topic a bit here, the wikipedia page for the amazing race 16 is now flagged as protected page, it was being placed by one of the senior admin by the consultation of me seeing many of the massive spams going on these days, so anyone whose account is created less then 4 days will not be able to edit, also IP addresses will be logged.

Now back to topic

Note that these shots were not taken at the shipyards in Ulu Pandan, but outside the Tanjong Pagar train station. Brent and Caite are probably looking for a taxi at the junction of Cantonment Link and Keppel Rd.

For Peach: the exact location this shot was taken at the junction of Queen St and Bencoolen Link Albert St.

We already knew that teams were here, but with the view in this confessional we can now confirm it as the Pit Stop: the rooftop of the Marina Barrage.

always there are some dumb people who took information and post there, but still thanks to people like you to report

a sidenote, the page was reverted back to it's original page

Oh my gosh! I saw that too.

For the title thing, maybe it's because it was Brent and Caite and not Louie/Mike who U-Turned Carol/Brandy. Needless to say they beat them to the opportunity, hence the title.

Sidenote: I wonder who did that.

And Michael wouldn't make sense for the title because:
1. Once you've used the U-turn, you can't use it again. Why would Michael/Louis be angry that someone beat them to a U-turn they can't use?
2. Michael and Louis WANTED to U-turn Carol and Brandy, thus it doesn't make sense for them to say the title.

Given that both Brent/Caite and Michael/Louie were seen at the Singapore Flyer, could we presume that this is their very first destination of the race, and where they get their Detour clue? The Flyer is roughly equidistant between the two options: 2.4km from Bugis Village, and 2.6km from Hong Lim Park.

Getting a taxi from Ulu Pandan would be a problem. Sad that there isn't much of a chance to showcase the public transport, yet again! (They're paranoid about spoilers, aren't they? Not that it stopped all the information we got from leaking out!)

I believe there are three locations that remain unidentified, all taken from inside taxis. Good luck!

kwando131:
You are correct that once a regular U-turn is used a team cannot use another REGULAR U-turn. however, you have forgotten from AR14 that a Blind U-turn lets a team still use a regular U-turn. Margie/Luke would have done so if they had beaten Victor/Tammy to the U-Turn. so Michael was entirely justified in being miffed.

We could use the regular U-Turn because we still have our team picture so we still could U-Turn a team if we beat Tammy & Victor to it.

But, a BIG question is.... does Michael & Louie know that they are allowed to use the regular U-Turn?

Yeah a Phil never (in this season of Luke's) mentioned a limit on once a team uses the U-Turn they can't use it again.  We have see for example that they have modified the rules for certain things.  Such as teams being allowed the Fast FOrward twice in a season if they did the first (or 2nd) teamed with another team.

Luke (TAR14) has confirmed that you can.  The key is that in order to use the U-Turn a team has to place their "Courtesy Of" picture on the sign.  Once you've done that you can't do it again.  But for the Blind U-Turn, you don't put your own picture up, so you still have it to use on a regular U-Turn if you want.

I hate 60 minutes. Wrapped up in a nutshell, it's a bunch of news stories that are too lame to be covered on the regular news, and Andy Rooney covering some junk that is really boring, repetitive and is about price saving.

Example: "I went to the Super Bowl and it cost me $500, $20 more than the years before. etc..." (Well, he didn't say that exactly, it's along the gist of it.)

Here's how it will play out (note: I made everything up but tasks based on spoilers....

Teams leave pit stop in Penang, Malaysia, and are told to take the train to Singapore. During the train ride, the lesbians do something that pisses of the cops, which makes them upset. They form a loose alliance with Brent & Caite, and makes them promise to do the dirty on the lesbians (as in u-turn them).

In Singapore, teams travel to their first route marker (Singapore Flyer?) and pick up their first clue. There is a fast-forward and a detour clue. Dan & Jordan and the cops go for the fast-forward. The cops loses, and have to return and do the detour.

Jet and Cord and Brent & Caite do the drums thing... while Carol & Brandy sell ice cream. Even though it's lunch time, Carol & Brandy have trouble selling ice-cream. To make things worse for them, the cops show up. Brent & Caite finish, and true to their word, U-turn the lesbians.

Jet & Cord have problems finding a taxi. The lesbians accost a small girl, and makes her buy an ice-cream. Job done, they travel via taxi to the U-turn sign. They are U-turned and have to go back and do the drums thing.

Dan & Jordan finish first, and check as team number one.  :jumpy: Brent out muscles everyone at the shipyard roadblock, and they are team number two, but Brent can't find his team's fanny pack (we ought to have one by now) and says the title. Jet & Cord overtakes them and they check in as team number two! Brent & Caite barely outraces the cops for third place, and Louie & Mike praise them to high heaven for the U-turn.

We cut to Carol and Brandy and they are thus the last team to arrive.

OK, so you are Les Moonves, head of CBS. Here is the ratings information for the season beginning Sept. 2009 you have to consider:

"60 Minutes" - ranked No. 9 in the Nielsen ratings, with an average audience each week of 15.7 million

"The Amazing Race" 15 and 16 - there was a break of about 3 months but for the Sunday nights that a season was active, my memory says the average weekly audience have been between 9 million and 10 million.

Now, would you bump or otherwise take away from a consistent top-rated and profitable show for only the past 42 years to favor a very good show with 8.5 years of moderate ratings? No business executive would (unless he knew that Andy rooney would be retiring and taking the franchise with him).

Could someone please watch for a new Twitter promo from CBS??

The same one is up:

Quote
AmazingRace_CBS    Tempers flare when racers place a target on 1 team's back + feuds come 2 a head when a U-turn comes into play! Preview http://bit.ly/aPbEop

But last week we got the old one followed by a new one too!

I can do the screencaps once I finally get home, IF there should be one!! :jumpy:

You can make really slow screencaps by printing your screen and then just cropping it to just the picture. That's what I do.

CBS has sent out its cautionary Friday alert for Sunday

Quote
CBS Sports live coverage of The Masters on Sunday, 4/11 could delay start times for 60 Minutes (7pm ET), Amazing Race (8pm ET), Undercover Boss (9pm ET) and Cold Case (10pm ET).

If so, you'll receive a new message on Sunday with exact details of revised start times.

The lion dancing and drumming is at the Speaker's Corner!

Joab and Neobie.....

I wont argue to much, its your town. But it appears to me that M/L are NOT at Speakers Corner. The parking is different and lot more traffice in M/L pic than in J/C or B/C.

It appears to me that M/L just arrived in downtown to do the ice cream detour........

I didn't say M/L are at the Speaker's corner? I think Jet and Cord and Brent and Caite are.

They got let off at the same place as Jet/Cord, at the parking lot outside the Kreta Ayer Police Post along North Canal Rd - the one marked in my map on Page 6. I can't tell for certain where Caite/Brent were let off; it looks like Upper Pickering St, at the Hong Lim Green Community Centre on the opposite side of the park (Hong Lim Park isn't that big). On the other hand (hmm, we've used two hands already... on a foot?) the establishing shots were taking on a third side of the park, along New Bridge Rd.

The implication? Jet/Cord and Michael/Louie's cabs have a place to park and wait, Brent/Caite's has to circle the block to where the others are waiting; the park is otherwise surrounded by double yellow lines - no-wait zones.

Maybe the Singapore Flyer is far from where they got the clue to the FF. I also think the detour comes right after the place where they got the clue to the FF.

In other words, this is how it plays out: arrive in clue destination, there are two options: FF and Detour

I doubt it. I've been to both Malaysia and Singapore and they don't have different time zones. I live in the Philippines so I know if there's changes in time zone in those places.

you are right actually, however i think that the time was america's timing, this is purely guess, maybe Luke can shed some light on this issue

also in case people don't know, singapore and malaysia have a slight timezone of 30 mins, this was told by my relatives who are malaysia, also my dad has confirmed this, but who cares about that half hour, LOL

No . . .  I meant Jet/Cord may not have changed the time on their watch possibly for several days.
9:30 AM Seychelles = 1:30 PM Singapore

Anyway, was just a thought.

All of you are right, but let me clear this up a little bit for those who are confused!

Malaysia has a much larger longitudinal range than Singapore, which means the time when the sun appears directly overhead varies. The sun is overhead in Singapore about 50min after Kota Kinabalu, and 15min before Penang. This is what Evan means when he says there is a time difference between Malaysia and Singapore.

Clock-wise, though, both countries (including East Malaysia) are in the +8 GMT time-zone. This means Jet/Cord wouldn't have to change the times on their watches going between Penang and Singapore. And they've been in Penang for two days now, surely they would have changed their times, especially after having to catch a train?

I am not confident about the times I deduced from the shadows, would an expert step in to help please? Dan/Jordan could have been held back by the crazily stringent Singaporean safety standards and briefings, but I'm not sure how long those would take. The train from Malaysia couldn't have arrived before 8.10am, so I'd say the drumming is one of the earlier tasks in the leg.

(So Michael/Louie U-Turn themselves? :snicker:)

Travel Time

Because the departure times of planes & trains are based on local time (the time at the airport/station), I suspect racers will change their watches every time they change locations.  Racers would not want to be late for a plane or train.

Looks like 930 in the morning to me........

Then how could Jordan perform FF around 11:42am, there are 2 hours..

Help this ole geezer out, please.  Do we have concrete evidence that Dan and Jordan are doing a Fast Forward?  Have we actually seen a green card somewhere?  Or, is this just someone's speculation that there is a FF this ep?

There is a FF, G-man. (http://planetsmilies.net/angel-smiley-5097.gif)

Discussion was based on the fact that it is an extra task that we see ONLY Dan and Jordan doing, AND they both are doing it, and we already have the RB.

No FF card seen in the promos yet though.

Angels? :lol3:(I have no idea!)

I'm getting a very early time for Louie at Bugis, perhaps even before the 9.30am Jet/Cord are at Hong Lim Park. Are you guys able to figure this out?

The sun is coming from the bottom right side of this pictures provided.  The shadows in the ferris wheel car are somewhat confusing, so I am basing this on the shadows coming from the trees next to the river.  Then looking at the yellow time lines provided in Neobie's post, I'm guess it is about 10 am.

I just need shots from the same clip.  To be clear, just the frames that are in the same clip that the cameraman shot while standing there in the flyer shooting the brothers as they stood there talking.

So the conclusion is...Dan & Jordan are working on the Fast Forward just about 15 minutes before Louie & Michael are working on the Detour.
Title: Re: TAR16 - EP 9: "Dumb did us in" (Singapore)
Post by: Neobie on April 10, 2010, 06:35:24 PM
Ha, thanks Chateau! That's a technique I can never figure out...

The timeline for the first half of the race looks like this then:
~8.10am: Train scheduled to arrive in Singapore.
~9.00am: From experience and by working backwards, the train arrives late. Brent/Caite have trouble finding a taxi.
~9.20am: Teams arrive at the Singapore Flyer (or nearby), receive their Detour, and are presented the Fast Forward option.
~9.30am: Teams arrive at their respective Detour locations.
~9.45am: Their briefing done, Daniel/Jordan begin the Flyer climb. Also, Michael/Louie switch to ice-cream.
~10.00am: Michael/Louie begin the ice-cream option of the Detour.

We have our U-Turn at Istana Park, then not sure which comes first: Sentosa or the shipyard.
We know they all end early afternoon at the Marina Barrage.

It is close to impossible getting a taxi at the shipyard; Michael/Louie will lose at least 15min. My educated guess:
1. Daniel/Jordan (due to Fast Forward)
2. Jet/Cord (from what we've seen, doing better with taxis than Brent/Caite)
3. Brent/Caite (from what we've seen, doing worse with taxis than Jet/Cord)
4. Michael/Louie (self-U-Turn, losing taxi at Ulu Pandan)
5. Carol/Brandy (U-Turn)

While 60 minutes is viewed by more people on average, TAR generates more revenue, since the advent of people meters, total audience hasn't been the measure that sets ad rates (what pays teh bills) that is age demographics (60 minutes has one of the worst of any show on CBS) and household income (60 minutes has one of the highest of CBS).

TAR for most of its run (has People meters took over in 05) has generated more ad revenue then 60 minutes.  In fact, until this season no other show on Sunday for CBS has generated more revenue for CBS on Sunday then TAR.

And 60 minutes has been having significant year to year declines among not only its total audience, but severe declines in adults 18-49 (the key age demographic used to set ad rates).

The reason CBS wont (at least for a couple years) change 60 minutes is not due to its audience, but do it being considered an institution.

While 60 minutes is going to end this season in may with 20-30% declines across the board (at thats being generous) TAR will actually be showing year to year increases.  And has been one of the most stable performers on CBS.

I don't recall having a Fast Forward immediately next to a route marker before, so there might just be a different first location teams are instructed to head for other than the Singapore Flyer.

This shot was taken on the south side of the Esplanade Bridge across the Singapore River from the Esplanade, where the Merlion is. This is also very close to Victoria Concert Hall, seen in our first promo. Any chance the first clue would be around here?

Teams could have made their way first to The Esplanade, or the Merlion.. then they will be asked to spot the biggest wheel in the world, where they will know it's the flyer because they can literally see the flyer from Esplanade or Merlion.

It would make more sense if the Fast Forward doesn't flat-out say go to the flyer, but rather hints at what it is, leaving the team that goes for it to figure the rest out.

At 9.45am, Dan and Jordan scale the flyer, the FF takes 30 minutes to complete (30 minutes for the flyer to revolve one round)

So D/J will receive their clue at about 10.15am, after which they will take a cab to Marina Barrage which is 5 to 10 minutes cab ride away.

ESTIMATED CHECK-IN TIME: 10.30am

As for Brent and Caite.. perhaps completed the Detour by 10am, takes around less than 15 minutes to travel to Istana Park, then about 25 minutes to travel to Shipyard, followed by 20 minutes to complete Roadblock, less than 15 minutes to travel to Mega Zip, 10 minutes to complete task, 15 minutes to travel to Marina Barrage.

Accounting nothing else goes wrong... ESTIMATED CHECK-IN TIME should be 11.45am? (Should be before 12pm)

The rest, if i'm not wrong.. should be checking in after 12pm.

Frankly speaking, looking at how Dan and Jordan, Brent and Caite and Mike and Louie performed during the first 3 legs.. nobody would have bet that they would be in the final 4.

I would have thought that the final 4 would be Jet and Cord, Carol and Brandy, Steve and Allie and Joe and Heidi.

I really want Jet and Cord to win now. Because they are the only team to do consistently well (except for one leg) and i don't mind Dan and Jordan winning now actually. Anyone but the detectives.

Dan and Jordan would have been eliminated if Steve and Allie didn't have a bad leg.
Jet and Cord would have been eliminated if it wasn't for the NEL.
Brent and Caite could have been eliminated on the first half of the race where every leg seemed to be a bad leg for them.
As for Michael and Louie, they should have been eliminated on Leg 2... least deserving to win. The reason why they still stuck around was because they beat an old granny and 2 females who were U-TURNed.

Oh, piece of geographical information:
The fountain Allan Wu was sitting at was pretty much where TARA2 began; the Asian Civilizations Museum is right next to the Victoria Concert Hall and Allan is about 100m/110yd from where he was flagging off the TARA teams...
